Re: Console port now working on 4000 [7:74489]

2003-08-30 Thread nettable_walker
I see what you are describing about one router every six months. I am
assuming the power supply is on.
I would recommend you open an TAC case RMA the router. The two biggest
problems Cisco has with the 4000 router chassis are
1] memory stops working because of the seats where the memory fit into the
motherboard give out
2] the problem you are describing.

Does it display anything when you powercycle the router? Does it
display

If it displays the bootup information and then freezes you may have
accidentally put 'no exec' under the console port. You would need to
 break
into the router, just like you would if you were resetting the password.

Quick question for the group. I have a 2621, 1 of the FA ports connected
to
a hub. from there, I have 2 servers running win2K's network load
balancing.
Pretty simple config to cluster 2 web servers with a VIP and virtual mac
based on that VIP. For the life of me, I cannot get one of the web servers
 to repond to requests...

So, my question would be, has anyone deployed this before? And, run into
problems because of the router ?

Professionals, I never (thankfully) had to work with FDDI --- however ---
I was able to land two 4500's two Nortel ASN's real cheap for my home lab.
All 4 routers have dual ethernet, quad serial, MMF FDDI modules.
I also have a MMF FDDI NIC card for my NT server
I would like to use FDDI for the backbone but am not sure what the missing
piece is.
Am I looking for a 3Com linkbuilder ? Or a FDDI blade for my 5505 Catalyst
? What generates the rings ?

Someone please make a suggestion.

Thanks,

Cables generate the ring! :-) FDDI uses a dual ring actually. A
dual-attached station on the ring has two ports - an A port, where the
primary ring comes in and the secondary ring goes out, and a B port where
the secondary ring comes in, and the primary goes out.

You could also use a concentrator if your routers are meant to be
single-attached stations. In this case, they would have an S (slave) port.

There's a good FDDI tutorial here:

 http://www.iol.unh.edu/training/fddi/htmls/

It would at least give you some background to help you figure out the
 easiest/cheapest topology and equipment.

 Hi,
I had a very similar message, I changed the cache and main RAM, but I
just got different error messages. I concluded that I had a bad
backplane. However, I swapped around the NP modules, and it's been
 working fine since

When I loook @ the link you referenced I can honestly see why I love Cisco
truly regret working on Bay/Nortel routers switches for 2 1/2 years before
ever touching Cisco letting my ego headed boss bully me into getting the
Nortel Networks Certified Support Expert !
Try to find something like this link on Nortel's useless web site. Try to
find out how to recover the password on theie ASN router by looking on thier
useless web site !
All they have is marketing. Cisco tells us how to do the job.

 It's probably an MTU problem.

I have an IPSec connection being tunneled via GRE, which in turn, is
tunneled by another IPSec connection. Don't ask why I'm doing this :-) But
we had to set the MTU down to 1320 to prevent fragmentation, and thus
 performance, issues.

In your case, you might want to try using the extended ping with the no
fragment option to determine which MTU size will work in your situation.

 Cheers!

  Hi All,

I am setting up a site-to-site VPN between 2 LANs using Cisco IOS VPN
 (Cisco
2600 routers). I could get the tunnel up and running between the two
 LANs
with IPSec over GRE so that I can run EIGRP. Data transfer between 2
 LANs
across the tunnel looks OK, and all dynamic routes learned with EIGRP.
However, a problem come up when I put a Proxy Server on the first LAN
and
force Internet traffic from workstations from the second LAN to go out
 with
this Proxy server. Workstations from the second LAN could browse
 Internet
  across the tunnel to reach the Proxy server then hit the Internet;
 however,
the performance is very poor (seem like browsing over a 56k modem). I
am
thinking this may be because of fragmentation on the 2 routers. Is
there
any work around for this issue? If MTU size needs to be adjusted, what
would be the ideal MTU size for IPSec over GRE tunnel in tunnel mode?
Again, thank you All for the help!

Thanks for your suggestions. I will try them this afternoon.

Cisco's own example for this shows IP address on the interfaces (not the
same one's I used) so I put them on.
I was also hoping to route the traffic accross the WAN in addition to
bridging between PC's but I will get to that after I figure out the first
issue !

  ethernet 0/0

I'm wondering why on the router you have e0/0 being 12.3.1.1/24 and to0/0
being 155.15.15.1/24. It doesn't look like the Ethernet and Token Ring
networks are really bridged?? If they are bridged, then they don't need IP
addresses, or they should have IP addresses in the same subnet. The PCs
should be in that same subnet also. To make sure you really have created
one
big bridged/switched network, put everything in the same IP subnet and do
 some pinging.

To test Windows and SR/TLB networking, however, you don't actually need or
want IP. Instead, make sure the PCs are using NetBEUI. The bridge should
forward their broadcasts and they should find each other. The PCs should
not
use NetBIOS over IP or IPX. You don't need or want network-layer packet
forwarding for your test, if I understand what you are trying to
accomplish.

It depends on the flash chips, some older boot roms do not recognise the
 newer chips.

Call cisco to get some upgraded roms if you have a contract or you can
 get them cheap from ebay.

The version you are looking for is 11.0(10c)XB2.

 Mark.

what does SR/TLB really do ? [7:54302]

Professionals - I have two WIN95 laptops --- one is connected to a Catalyst
3920, then token ring 0/0, the other to a Catalyst 1924, then ethernet 0/0

The PC's could ping each other even before I enabled EIGRP --- they are
directly connected.
I wanted to set up SR/TLB so I entered some commands as you can see in the
log at the bottom of this post
Even after setting up SR/TLB the PC's cannot see each other in network
neighborhood, so in what way are they connected ?

from above link: If you need to connect stations between Ethernet and
Token Ring which are local to the router, you must use SR/TLB

Paul, If it is a 2500 router you are looking to upgrade you can get the
bootprom's from Cisco for free.
When I was going for CCNP two years ago I bought 8 used 2501, 2502, 2503,
2504, 2522
cisco sent me the chips for all of them for free.

You could just tell your LAN admins not to change anything on the switches.

 Evening group,

What I have a TACACS server and the setup we are trying to achieve goes as

I want the LAN admins to have minimal control on there switches in there

accomplished that one the vty ports. Here is the config:

 Server
 user=test
 password=test12

 set priv-level=15
 service=shell
default cmd=(permit/deny)And the commands we want are here.
 prohibit cmd=x
 cmd=y{

 Switch

aaa authorization exec privilege group tacacs+ none
aaa authorization commands 15 cmd group tacacs+ none

  exec-timeout 5 0
  authorization commands 15 cmd

It works great for vty but not for console. I read somewhere about a
hidden

I have had excellent experience with the simline. You use regular RJ-45
patch cable to connect it to the router

You might want to check out the following:

 Hello,

Does anyone had any experience on Simline 2 ISDN Simulator? I am thinking
of
buying a 2nd hand one. I have been told that the simulator works just by
normal Ethernet connections into the Cisco 2503, so no need of any extra
 cabling.

Is there anything I have to look out for when getting an ISDN Simulator?

Any help or comments would be greatly appreciated.

You could buy a 3920 simulator software package for about 75 but I
wouldn't
recommend it, I prefer to have routers to test different setups with. You
could go on ebay and look for 3920 scenario, there is a person named
Bernard
that sells them for under 30 and he sets you up on the switch with a
scenario planned out. I particularly enjoyed that because it gives you a
goal to meet for the scenario. You could also go with bradshawlabs.com
for
about 75 dollars for eight hours, they have a full rack with ATM also so
you
could go for both, if you are looking for more than just the one
technology
I would recommend them. The administrator there is also very helpful if
you
are new to the stuff. Those are the ones I have found useful.

I took the beta this afternoon, just to see how it compared to 350-001. I
would like to share my perceptions; but please don't e-mail asking me to
 break
 the NDA, I won't.

I found it to be significantly more challenging then the old exam,
requiring
you to know the topics covered much more deeply then before. I would be
surprised if there isn't a considerable drop-off in the pass rate if what
I
saw today is any indication of what the ready-for-prime-time version is
when
 it comes out.

Finally some of the older technologies are dropping off, and as you can
see
from the blueprint, new technologies have been added. I also noticed that
 the
questions have matured quite a bit, as if they pushed back some of the lab
problems that were dropped in the transition to the one-day format. If
you
miss the troubleshooting section of the lab; you'll enjoy seeing it here.

Keep in mind I've got a book out, as well as being one of the boson
authors,
so I have a vested interest here - but my advice would be that if you are
anywhere near ready, start cramming to take the old version before it goes
away. If you doubt my sincerity, spend the $50 and see if I'm kidding
about
 the new exam.

Again, without breaking the NDA - I'd be curious if anybody had a
different
experience. Perhaps I perceived it as harder just because I've spent so
much
time living with the old exam.

 Good luck all...

I know that many of you studying for your CCIE lab are looking for good
deals on some of the more critical peices of CCIE lab gear.

As some of you may or may not know, the Catalyst 3900 series was
originally made by Olicom, and known as the Olicom OC-8600 (Catalyst 3900)
and the OC-8601 (Catalyst 3920). Later Cisco made these there catalyst
 line.

I have a handfull of Olicom OC-8601 switches, which have the same
interface as a Catalyst 3920. These are 20 port token ring switches.
They do not support CDP, since they are the Olicom version, but they
support everything else including the identical interface and method of
creating TrCRF's and TrBRF's, which is the part most seem to concentrate
 on for CCIE lab study.

These are very minty and clean. I am making them available to this list
for $800/each. This is a very good deal on an affordable solution. These
are running the latest version of the Olicom code, which like i said is is
an identical interface as the Cisco code only this says Olicom instead of
Cisco and does not support the CDP part of it.

I thought yesterday's test score was a fluke so this

 I
decide to sign up for the CCIE written exam.
 Amazingly
I passed with a score of 92/100 That is unbelievable.
To pass the exam for someone like myself really
de-value the prestige of Cisco Certification by some

Anyone care to comment on this.

OR could this be simulated in a LAB to make the

My understanding is that the router will:

 1. Run through POST (Bootstrap loader is in control, code in ROM executes
 diagnostics)
 2. Attempt to load IOS
a.) Flash
b.) Network
c.) Boot (which is a small piece of IOS located in ROM, just enough to
 get the router up)
 3. Perform hardware inventory
 4. Load Configuration
a.) NVRAM
b.) Network
c.) Initial Config/Setup Dialog (this is if there is no config in
NVRAM)

You can probably drill these down even a bit further. For instance, after
the POST runs, the router will check the configuration-register boot field
value for advice as to where to get the IOS from. What's more, before the
IOS is loaded the router will scan the configuration file in NVRAM (if one
is there) for any boot system commands.

I'll search CCO to see if I can find a good link for you.

I searched Cisco's site for boot process boot sequence and do not

Is a router with config reg 0x2102 supposed to boot from flash, then
 network, then NVRAM ?

If a router is set to boot from flash:c2600-d-mz.113-10.T.bin but it
cannot
find c2600-d-mz.113-10.T.bin on the flash what will it do, and in what
order
 ?

Any help would be really appreciated.

I think. :-) You may want to double check that answer. It's

[If the subject line is ambiguous, please consult your Monty Python.]

DISCLAIMER: I am involved in several commercial efforts for paper
scenarios and virtual racks. I think the issues raised here, however,
are of value to the community.
 ---

Certification (and network learning that is not strictly
certification related) involve scenarios for practice. It's my
belief, however, that not all scenarios are the same. I'm not
referring here to their quality, but to my belief that there are
several types of scenarios that help in different aspects of the
learning process. I'd really like feedback from the community if this
 thinking makes sense.

 1. Technology familiarization scenarios
 2. Complex problem recognition troubleshooting tests
 3. Specific exam preparation (e.g., CCIE lab time management)
 4. Non-certification (e.g., practice for real-world multihoming without
  CCIE restrictions, server interactions, etc.)

If you were obtaining scenarios over a period of time, what would be
 your priorities?

 Type 1
 --

1a) This can reasonably begin with a preconfigured 1-3 router CCNA
 level system,
that just allows CLI practice and the use of show/debug commands.

1b) The next level can be anywhere from CCNA to CCIE level, but focusing
on
a single protocol/technology. Other technologies are used only to
 support
the primary objective. For example, my upcoming CertZone X.25
scenario
starts by establishing OSPF routing (configuration given) over a
serial
line with HDLC encapsulation, then walking the student through the
 issues
in converting to LAP-B and X.25 encapsulation.

A basic such scenario gives the objectives and possibly some criteria
for successful configuration, but doesn't give step-by-step guidance,
illustrate common errors, and include troubleshooting.

1c) A more structured presentation, typically introducing common errors
and
showing how they are discovered and corrected on the way to a correct
  solution.

1d) Compare-and-contrast multipart scenarios, such as an OSPF scenario
that
explores several different aspects of partitioning and virtual links
(e.g., connecting OSPF Area 0.0.0.0 across a non-OSPF domain, fixing
an OSPF partition with a virtual link through a nonzero area, then
examining the other application of virtual links: connecting
 noncontiguous
  areas to the backbone)

 Type 2
 --

This is much more like an actual Cisco test experience, but giving
the flavor of mentoring rather than time pressure. For example, you
might be given an address plan, and told to implement OSPF in part of
the network and RIP in another.

You'd first get the individual protocols working, perhaps being
guided through some common errors and how to spot them.

Next, you'd set up redistribution, again with advice on typical problems.

Once you have the redistributed routing working, you'd systematically
add other features (e.g., DLSW+, performance management), again with
 guidance at each step.

 Type 3
 --

Tests here are closer to the published descriptions and concerns of
the CCIE lab, and include features such as a visible clock, and the
option to choose to get a working configuration for some sub-part,
losing the points but being able to go to the next part.

In Pythonesque terms, Type 3 scenarios teach you to deal with the
troll, but with the issue being the clock rather than the velocity of
 the sparrow.

 Type 4
 --

My main focus here has been exterior routing for both multihomed
enterprises and ISPs, but reflecting best current practice rather
than some of the artificialities of the CCIE lab (e.g., encouraging
rather than forbidding appropriate use of static and default routes).

The first is Cisco CCIE certification practice, both practice for the
written and the lab exam. The second is to prepare for Cisco
specializations involving technologies such as voice and security.
The third is basic familiarization for the CCIE.

We can support training organizations, resellers, and enterprises in
staff training aimed at any of these objectives. In addition, we are
here to help in quests not directly associated with certification,
such as advanced technology training (e.g., carrier-level BGP and
MPS). Other related quests are familiarize enterprises with their
planned multihomed and VPN configurations, and do final checkout in a
 controlled environment.

I have her book (second edition) and I think she agrees with John. She
says
 this about the LES:

LES: The node that keeps the mapping from MAC address to ATM address. A
LEC
registers its own (MAC, ATM) address with the LES and finds out the ATM
address of other LECs by asking the LES. A LES supports one ELAN. A LES
maintains a point-to-multipoint VC from itself to all LECs in the ELAN.

(She doesn't say that the LES sits in the middle between LEC
conversations).

On the next page, she gets into the rest of the story and says the LEC
asks the LES for the ATM address corresponding to layer 2 address D. When
it finds out (from the LES), the LEC establishes a VC to that ATM address,
and future packets for D are forwarded over that VC.

To send a multicast (or broadcast), the LEC must find the ATM address of
the BUS. It finds that by asking the LES for the ATM address of
. The LEC then establishes a VC to the BUS When a LEC
sends
it a packet to multicast, the BUS retransmits the packet onto the
 point-to-multipoint VC.

In other words, Radia agrees with all the other experts. Not a big
surprise
 there! ;-)

You can see that once the LEC has resolved the address of the remote
LEC to which it wants to communicate, a bi-directional data direct VCC
is setup and all data flow *directly* between the two LANE clients. The
LES gets involved when a LEC wants to join an ELAN and when address
resolution is required. Beyond that it doesn't do much.

No. Once SVCs are setup between the LECs, traffic flows
directly between them without the use of the LES. The LES
facilitates the initial connections but is not involved in the
traffic flow after the end-to-end SVC is in place.

I think. :-) You may want to double check that answer. It's
been a while since I've even thought about LANE.

boot sequence on router [7:29029]

2001-12-12 Thread nettable_walker

12/12/2001 10:42pm Wednesday

Professionals,

I am researching the default behavior of the Cisco router during boot up. I
am very familiar with the hands on side of upgrading flash RAM on 2500
2600's but I need a text book answer.

I searched Cisco's site for boot process boot sequence and do not
really see what the router's default behavior is.

Is a router with config reg 0x2102 supposed to boot from flash, then
network, then NVRAM ?

If a router is set to boot from flash:c2600-d-mz.113-10.T.bin but it cannot
find c2600-d-mz.113-10.T.bin on the flash what will it do, and in what order
?

Any help would be really appreciated.

Thanks,

Richard

 Hello,

I am a Cisco Instructor and have been toying with the idea of
running very low-cost classes that would be affordable for those not
sponsored by a corporation or rich enough to pay $2000 or more per class.
I was considering about maybe $200 to cover costs and equipment. (If
someone could not afford even that we could work something out...)

While I got my CCSI at Mentor (formerly Chesapeake) and recently
have been doing contract training at places like Sprint and Verizon, I can
still remember trying to get started, to get training, and to get that
proverbial foot in the door. I'd like to use some of my off weeks when
I'm not doing corporate training to help other people get their Cisco
certifications and a good start in this career.

Classes would be held at my house, which is located just south of
Washington, DC. in beautiful Fort Washington, Maryland.

Please let me know if you think that such classes would be useful
 and of interest.

 Yours Truly - Bruce Evry

After six attempts I would think you would have most of the questions
written down.
Use that as a study guide.
There are people who take tests for a living.
They just memorize as much as they can write a book on what's on the test.
When I am about to teach a CCNA class I take the test again just so my class
is on the same page with the test.

can you clear counters and watch the amount you are gettingon both
 sides..

int resets cum from the line bieng dropped (g703/line)

i have smds/leased lines and you should not get ANY int resets on a good
 line.

the last time i had this problem it was the BT CSU/DSU that was at fault

that FUNNY you know ...al the BT CSU/DSU (for there 2 meg leased) have an
 X21 port built in

you could also try swapping the ints (S0-S1)on both sides to see if that
 makes a difference...

 Is this a new install??

it IS possible that the G703 converter is stuffedwe use BlackBox
ones...and they SHOULD work straight out of the box...

   Hi All,

I have a 2MB leased line (UK Megastream) line between two sites.

   One site has a 3640, the other a 2621.

The line is presented as G703 both ends.

I have PDA DC2020 G703 to X21 converters at both ends.

   so connection is:

   Megastream Box (CSU/DSU)
   PDA DC2020 X21 to G703 Converter
   Cisco 2621 (WIC-1T)

When I do local and remote loopback tests, using extended pings,
 there
are no errors. This is true from both ends.

As soon as I take the line off loopback, the activity light on the
2621 goes crazy, and I get about 500 input errors per second on one
end, and about 300 or so per second on the other end.

Keepalives are incrementing, I have tried invert txclock, although
   probably didn't need to.
