Good Review

However one correction, you've mentioned that EIGRP is a link state routing
protocol, when it is a hybrid distance vector protocol.

Take Care

Simon,

Careful there! Don't mistake MLS for MPLS. Two different animals entirely.
MLS is Multi-Layer Switching and is strictly a LAN technology while MPLS
(Multi-Protocol Label Switching) is predominantly used in the WAN.

Here's some stuff on MPLS.
http://www.convergedigest.com/Bandwidth/archive/010910TUTORIAL-rgallaher1.ht
m
http://www.mplsrc.com/
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/732/Tech/mpls/mpls_presentations.shtml
http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/732/Tech/mpls/mpls_techdoc.shtml

Cisco Networkers 2001 Power session on MPLS:
http://www.cisco.com/networkers/nw01/pres/pr/542/

Also, if you go to http://www.webtorials.com, you'll see a link for MPLScon
2003 Conference Presentation Handouts. You'll need a Webtorials account but
they're free. The links for creating an account or signing in are up at the
top of the page. This is one of the best places to look since the
information goes into a bit more depth than that on most sites.

Hope this helps,

Karen

Also are there any good books to brush up on things that were not in the CCNP
three years ago ??

Thanks

VLAN Tagging on Cat 3550 Another question [7:71703]

Subject: VLAN Tagging on Cat 3550 Another question [7:71703]

 Hi

Some how I was thinking VLAN tagging was something more than just
Trunking
in Cisco talk,as you can guess I'm pretty rusty when it comes to
switching.I
have another question.Look at the example below.

  REMOTE SITE

 PC's-CISCO 3550--CISCO 2600~~(256K LEASE LINE)
(VLAN3) (802.1q TRUNK)

MAIN SITE

~~CISCO 3600ALCATEL SWITCHPIX...INTERNET
ROUTER/INTERNET.
(256K LINK) (802.1qTRUNK) (VLAN3)

A client wants to allow a group of PC's on a remote site, access to the
internet via the main site's ISP.But wants these group of Pc's on their
own
VLAN so they have no connection to the rest of the network (except for the
internet router which the whole network uses to access the internet) they
have been advised by a third party to do it as above. They have a Cisco
3550EMI switch at the remote site a Alcatel Omnicore L3 switch at the
Main
site. The WAN link is a 256k lease line. They want to configure the PC's on
the remote site with the same VLAN as a dedicated PIX on the Main site
(also
 on the same subnet).

The Cat 3550 is not using it's L3 capabilities and is trunked to the
remote
 site's router

 Can this be done ?

I'm sure thinking of the basic laws of routing it won't be possible to
have
devices being on the same subnet but across different WAN links, as
routing
loops can occur. Also would it be best to enable the layer 3 capabilities
of
the switches, or to let the routers do the work.

I'm looking forward to your answers

 Thanks in advance

 Simon.

Vlan tagging is commonly called by Cisco as trunks.
Have you ever configured trunks as ISL ou 802.1q ?
Actually the name vlan tagging makes more sense on non Cisco equipment,
 where only exists 802.1q .
ISL doesn't do tag as 802.1q , but reencapsulates the packet with a new
 header .

VLAN Tagging on Cat 3550 Another question [7:71703]

2003-07-02 Thread simon watson
Hi

Some how I was thinking VLAN tagging was something more than just Trunking
in Cisco talk,as you can guess I'm pretty rusty when it comes to switching.I
have another question.Look at the example below.

  REMOTE SITE
MAIN SITE

PC's-CISCO 3550CISCO 2600~~CISCO 3600ALCATEL L3
SWITCH..PIX...INTERNET ROUTER---INTERNET.
   (VLAN3) (802.1q TRUNK) (256K LINK)(802.1q
TRUNK)(VLAN3)

A client wants to allow a group of PC's on a remote site, access to the
internet via the main site's ISP.But wants these group of Pc's on their own
VLAN so they have no connection to the rest of the network (except for the
internet router which the whole network uses to access the internet) they
have been advised by a third party to do it as above. They have a Cisco
3550EMI switch at the remote site a Alcatel Omnicore L3 switch at the Main
site. The WAN link is a 256k lease line. They want to configure the PC's on
the remote site with the same VLAN as a dedicated PIX on the Main site (also
on the same subnet).

The Cat 3550 is not using it's L3 capabilities and is trunked to the remote
site's router

Can this be done ?

I'm sure thinking of the basic laws of routing it won't be possible to have
devices being on the same subnet but across different WAN links, as routing
loops can occur. Also would it be best to enable the layer 3 capabilities of
the switches, or to let the routers do the work.

ISL doesn't do tag as 802.1q , but reencapsulates the packet with a new
header .

Is there any questions I should be asking the Circuit Provider so

order shall I start the upgrade?? (i.e put in the new boot Rom first then
the DRAM SIMMS etc) as they want a worst case scenario(i.e if there is a
problem to re-install the original kit) As my AS5300 Knowledge is pretty

Software compression IOS on 3600/2600 routers. [7:27555]

2001-11-28 Thread Simon Watson

Hi Guys

I'm looking over a WAN network comprising of 7 2600's connected to a 3660
over 256k kilostream links.Software compression is set on all the WAN
links.I need to upgrade the IOS on all the routers from 12.0(7) to
12.2(x).My plan was to upgrade the remote routers first one by one, and then
upgrade the 3600 last.

Do you think there will be any problems in having software compression
running on the WAN link with the 3600 on the main site running 12.0(7), and
a router on the remote site(2600) running 12.2(x).

Please let me know.

Many Thanks.

2001-11-28 Thread Simon Watson

Hi Guys

Talking about Cat 4006 L3 Blades.

I've got 2 4006 with L3 blades, and I'm still trying to work out the
relationship between the Physical interfaces (gigabit interface 1 2), and
the logical interfaces (gigabit interface 3 4).

I know that the logical interfaces connects to the backplane of the switch.

It seems that the Physical interfaces have no relationship with the rest of
the box, and I've set all the configurations on the logical interfaces which
seem to work(like a msfc on the 6500's).But I will need to use the physical
interfaces soon.

Can anyoune help

Thanks

Simon.

Problems with CiscoWorks 2000 [7:24391]

2001-10-27 Thread Simon Watson

Hi Guys

I've installed Ciscoworks 2000, at a clients site with 2 Cat 6509's 12 Cat
3548's. In resource Manager I'm setting up syslog to report messages from
the switches to CW2000, when I check the syslog reports on where I should
expect to see the IP address of the switch that sent the message, I see
ThisAddressDoesNotExist I have checked to see if all was set up on the
switch ok which it was, I have also disabled reverse DNS.

Can anyone tell me why I cannot see the IP address of the switch(by the way
the switches in question have been set up to be managed by resource manager.

Also on Campus manager in the topology map I want to see the names of the
routers rather than the IP address how do manage that ?

Thanks

CSS switch and I just wanted to know how to configure URL load balancing on
it as this is what the customer is requesting.

Many Thanks in advance

Simon Watson.

In my previous reply I'm refering to the (as far as I know..) the OSPF

Most likely the hardware compression is mucking up the
  multicast traffic...
I've had many many issues with hardware compression and
  multicast (got to
know TAC people all across the world).. I'll try to dig up
  the bug ID.

I would say a, d (assuming you meant to put "d" instead of the second
"c") As Store forward stores the whole frame before forwarding it for
error checking .The last question is a trick as cut-through does not
forward on the layer 3 dest address but the layer 2.

OSPF NAT

2001-02-20 Thread Simon Watson

htmlDIVHi Guys can you help me/DIV
DIVnbsp;/DIV
DIVFONT color=#00 face=Helv size=2
PI've set up a static NAT entry on a remote dual ethernet router(name of router is
remote1), the global address that the local device will translate to is 10.10.10.100
this Global address is not in the subnet of the IP address on either interface, so I
have set up a loopback address with IP address 10.10.10.1/24 and have placed it in the
OSPF process on the remote router( network 10.10.10.0 0.0.0.255 area 1), so that other
routers in the same OSPF group will see the advertised Global network, ( as all Global
addresses will be in the 10.10.10.x/24 network), and know where to send any data that
has been translated./P
PHowever on a Core router that is attached to remote1 via it's ethernet0, and is on
the same OSPF process as remote1, when "show ip route" is typed on the Core router
this is observed./P
PO 10.10.10.1/32 [110/11] via 10.1.1.33, 00:16:08, Ethernet0./P
PInstead of the whole 10.10.10.0/24 network being advertised, only the explicit
address of remote1 has been advertised./P
Ptherefore the global NAT address of 10.10.10.100 is unknown to other routers
besides remote1./P
PWhat do I need to do to get the whole 10.10.10.0/24 network being advertised via
OSPF, so that the other routers will know where to send NAT data./P
PIs the only way is to set a static route at the core router and redistribute it./P
Pnbsp;/P
PThanks in advance/P

NAT HSRP Problem

2001-02-17 Thread Simon Watson

htmlDIVHi Guys/DIV
DIVnbsp;/DIV
DIVI've got 2 dual ethernet Cisco 1605 routers connected to each other via 2
cascaded hubs. Both sets of interfaces are set up for HSRP.(eth0 of both routers
arenbsp;in one HSRP group amp; eth1 are in another HSRP group). Both routers have
also been set up to staically NAT a device(which will be called Test PC)nbsp;on the
local network which is connected to eth 1 of the routers. Also tracking is set on both
of the primary router's interfaces to monitor the other interface./DIV
DIVnbsp;/DIV
DIVEth0 on both routers are connected to a Core router via a hub. In normal
operation,nbsp;ifnbsp;nbsp;the test PCnbsp;nbsp;sent continous PING's to a device
hanging on the Core router, it's local IP address is translated by the HSRP Primary
router amp; routed towards the core router amp; all is well. On inspection of the
Core routersnbsp;ARP cache shows the translated IP address of test PC and the virtual
MAC- address of the primary (int eth0) HSRP router as expected./DIV
DIVnbsp;/DIV
DIVHowever if the cable on eth1 of the Primary router is plugged out to invoke the
Standby router to become nbsp;active the PING's seemed to be not getting through. On
inspection of the 2 1600 routers the changover of the Standby router from standby to
active has taken place, with the Primary router now in a standby state./DIV
DIVnbsp;/DIV
DIVHowever on inspecting the ARP cache of the core router, instead of seeing the
translated IP address of the test PC with the virtual MAC address, the translated IP
address was seen with the REAL hardware address of the now standby interface on the
primary router, thus causing the PING's not to work./DIV
DIVnbsp;/DIV
DIVI've tried this with another set of routers amp; the same thing happened. Has
Cisco got a bug with HSRP being configured with a router when NAT is also configued.
Plase let me know your thoughts on this matter./DIV
DIVnbsp;/DIV
DIVThanks/DIV

Question on Subnetting

2000-11-21 Thread Simon Watson

Hi Guys

I've got a customer who has a VSAT WAN network consisting of Cisco routers,
who has for a point to point connection between 2 routers used different
subnet masks i.e on the interface of one router the IP address is 172.16.8.1
Mask 255.255.240.0, on the interface of the router at the other end of the
link an IP address of 172.16.8.35 mask 255.255.255.240. (No dynamic routing
protocol is in operation at the moment). For the remote router to send data
accross the link a static route has to be configured as 172.16.8.1 is not in
it's subnet.

I'm trying to find documents on the web (i.e RFC's) to show to the customer
that this subnetting scheme, is unconventional, unadvisable and not
recommended, and that devices residing on the same network should have the
same subnet mask.

Can anyone help

Thanks in advance

Re: Passed CCNP

2000-07-25 Thread Simon Watson

Hi

On the question if you should take the CCNP1.0 or 2.0. It depends what you
have studied for in the pass if you are already prepared to take the
exams.

The CCNP1.0 exams expire on the 31st July(in 6 days) so if you have just
commenced studying it would be advisable to go the version 2.0 route.

Unfortunatley I can't help you much with recommeded reading, I had the
student course work for all the exams plus the cisco ACRC book from
ciscopress.

  Dear Guys

Just Letting you know that I've just passed my CCNP.

The path I took was the FRS exam and then the CIT

  got 900 out of 1000 on the FRS( 91% ACRC,91% CMTD,79% CLSC) 778 out
off
  1000 for the CIT.

I found the CIT the hardest exam, make sure you know ISDN well as there
was
a lot of ISDN questions on my exam.

This was for the CCNP1.0, how long before I need to recertify ??.I've
heard
  it is 2 years.

Well I must thank God for his immense help, and for you guys for your
