RE: CCIE Self-Employment [7:62394]

2003-02-03 Thread supernet
Not sure about Chicago area, but in my area, rate is generally above
$150/hr. And guess what, I'm in Silicon Valley.

To configure a router or switch is simple. Worst case, pick up the phone
and call TAC will solve most configuration problems. Customers are
looking for someone that can run the show. CCIE is not enough, you also
need to know how to do project management and very importantly, how to
BS.

This is based on several interviews I had during the past couple of
weeks.

Rate depends on who is paying and how much do they have? :-)

In chicago area $125/Hr is considered normal with 1 way travel time. If
you
got a fortune 500 client, you can easily bump it up to $175/Hr. and they
will not argue about it.

You shouldn't compare SIP and CCM. SIP is an industry standard, whereas
CCM
is a Cisco product. Any vendor, including Cisco, can and has
implemented
SIP. Only Cisco can 'implement' CCM (after all the first 'C' stands for
Cisco).

There is a significant amount of SIP in production - almost all of it in
service-providers. Most of today's 3G wireless networks, for example,
rely
on SIP.

To make things more confusing, Cisco may implement SIP within CCM soon.

weird css/ce problem [7:66813]

2003-04-03 Thread supernet
Hi,

I have a weird CSS/CE problem that I couldn't figure out. I appreciate
if anyone can help me out.

We use 1 CSS11500 and 2 CE590s as proxy server to connect to the
Internet. Users at main office don't have any problems. Users at branch
office couldn't open a particular site page. That page just kept
refreshing itself. If I disable proxy and have users connect to Internet
directly, everything works. So the problem must be either CSS or CE.
However, I couldn't find anything wrong on them. What could be the
problem?

Thank you,

network security [7:41440]

2002-04-14 Thread supernet

Hi Dear Friends,

My company is considering using CiscoSecure to do AAA and we are not
sure which one we should use, Windows or UNIX. I have the following
questions, please help me to clarify:

1. My friend told me Windows has a lot of security holes. My question is
if Windows is only using TCP/IP, it only has IP based security holes,
like SNMP vulnerability. But UNIX is also IP based, it also has this
kind of security holes, right? So if I put all the security patches from
Microsoft, this shouldn't be a problem. Is this statement valid?

2. My friend also told me that Windows is easier to crash. I knew NT 4
is not stable, but as far as I know, 2000 and XP are pretty stable. The
problem is if we have to hire a UNIX guy, it costs more than an NT guy,
right? So what other advantages UNIX buy me?

We definitely don't want to use any free AAA server since we couldn't
get any vendor support.

Thank you very much.

Yoshi

We have a Cisco 5300 as RAS router. It has PRI and digital modems.
Regular modem users dial the number no problem, they can always get

that it's LEC problem but they insist everything is good on their side.
What seems to be the problem?

2600 Fast Etherenet problem [7:43518]

2002-05-07 Thread supernet

Hi Dear Friends,

I've got a 2600 router. The Fast Ethernet was configured as static IP.
Sometimes, its IP changed by itself and got one from DHCP server. I
changed it back and it would happen again several days later. "show
start" shows that IP is static. Cisco TAC couldn't give an explanation
but only recommend upgrade IOS>

Anyone else has this problem?

Thanks.

weird call back problem [7:45318]

2002-05-28 Thread supernet

I have an ISDN backup between 3640 (PRI) at satellite office and a 5200
(PRI) at central office. If frame is down, 3640 calls 5200; 5200 drops
the line and calls back. Idle time is 180 seconds. Most of the time it
works fine but sometimes, ISDN won't go down after idle time (after
frame already comes up) until I manually clear the interface. I tried
different IOS on both 3640 and 5200, no success. Debug dialer shows
packet uninteresting. I opened a case with TAC but they couldn't provide
any help.

Anyone in this group saw this problem before?

Thanks.

RE: Cisco VPN client and NAT [7:47430]

2002-06-26 Thread supernet

Lidiya,

I didn't try PIX, but I tried a 1605: Main office
3030---Internet---1605---VPN clients. It worked fine. 1605 was
configured PAT inside. Does this mean 1650 is IPSec aware? If 1605 is
IPSec aware, why PIX isn't?

Thanks.

If you are talking about passing IPSec through the PIX (not PIX
terminating VPN tunnel) then you are correct. PIX has to have a pool of
ip addresses for one-to-one NAT for your VPN clients.

If you are talking about PIX terminating VPN, then PIX won't even know
the difference if the packet went through the PAT/NAT device.

Are your cable modem IPSec aware (supports IPSec through PAT)?

If yes, then you can terminate VPN tunnels on the VPN Concentrator or
the PIX.

If not, then you can use VPN Concentrator with "IPSec over TCP" option.
PIX doesn't support IPSec over TCP for now. PIX only listens on udp port
500.

My clients uses IPSec over UDP, not TCP. We do have to enable "Allow
IPSec through NAT" on clients. I guess it's the same thing you were

I bet you were using IPSec over TCP. Then it really doesn't matter what
is in the 'middle'. Your Cisco 1605 will see only tcp traffic, not esp.
Cisco 1600 is not IPSec aware (and don't have to be in your setup).

callmanager and h323 gateway question [7:61529]

2003-01-21 Thread supernet
I have a callmanager 3.1, unity 4.0 and a 2611 (FXO) h323 gateway. FXO
interface connects to an analog line. I'm wondering if this will work
for inbound calls. I understand analog line is not DID so Telephone
Company will not send any digits to my gateway 2611, therefore, inbound
calls will not route to extension. I created a PLAR on the gateway,
hoping it sends everything to unity; from there, I can dial any
extension. The problem is I can hear unity greetings but it won't
transfer to other extensions.

My question is: Will h323 analog gateway work for inbound calls? If so,
how do I do it? Will PLAR work?

Thanks.

plugged into an fxo port

port config

voice-port 3/0/1
 echo-cancel coverage 32
 timeouts call-disconnect 2
connection plar 0763 (0763 being the digits telco sends on that line)
 description inbound_fxo
 supervisory disconnect anytone

and the correct dial peer statement

dial-peer voice 763 voip
 destination-pattern 0763
 session target ipv4:192.168.1.2

will send 0763 to CCM and any phone with 0763 dn will ring

1. When I have a voice mail, the MWI LED won't turn on but unity kept
calling me. How do I tell the unity to turn on the MWI? I've already
check "use MWI for Message Notification".

2. When I dial unity pilot number, I had to wait 20-30 seconds to hear
the greetings. What's wrong?

I used callmanager 3.1(4), unity 3.1 and IP phone 30VIP.

Thanks.
Yoshi

callmanager dial plan question [7:48300]

2002-07-07 Thread supernet

I'm trying to learn callmanager dial plan and got some questions, here
is my scenario:

1. Within our Pleasanton campus, our number range is (925)
426-. Our RTP campus number range is (919) 685-. I want users at
Pleasanton dial 6 to reach locally and 685 to reach RTP (because
we have a lot of other offices, so minimum 7-digit is required for all
offices except Pleasanton). The problem is users at RTP have to dial
685 to reach locally. Apparently, it's cumbersome. Is there anyway
to get around this?
2. If we have 2 callmanger clusters, are the dial plans in 2
clusters related? How do I create relationship?

Thanks.
Yoshi

RE: Certificate Authority [7:48744]

2002-07-13 Thread supernet

Two things you may want to ask before you want to do certificate.

1. Do you really need that kind of security? It's a good technology but
difficult to train the users. You will get A LOT of support calls from
users. So if you are not in banking or military, stay away from it. A
hard token will be secure enough.

2. How much do you want to spend? W2K works for Concentrator and easy to
set up but it's very limited and you won't get much support from
Micro$oft. Verisign or Baltimore or Entrust are very expensive but you
get good support.

Hope that helps.

Yes, you can do that. It's not recommended, but it can be done.

Installation Order:

1) Windows 2000
2) Windows 2000 Service Pack 2
3) Internet Explorer 5.5
4) Windows 2000 call mangler OS upgrade
5) Callmangler (whatever version + multiple service packs)
6) Setup the server as a domain controller
7) Exchange 5.5
8) Exchange 5.5 Service Pack 4
9) Unity

that's the quick and dirty run-down for ya. I dont think I missed
anything,

RE: Everything working now? [7:49438]

2002-07-23 Thread supernet

$4,000? Kind of expensive. I built a dual P3 1.13GHz system for less
than $1,800:

Intel SIA2 motherboard with 2 P3 1.13GHz
1GB memory (IBM)
2x36GB Cheetah SCSI (15,000 rpm compared to 10,000 rpm)
CDRW+DVD
Lian-Li aluminum case
Accessories

The thing I like is it's very quite. Compaq servers' noise really
bothers me.

I bought everything from ebay and all brand new.

With $4,000, I can build another system for standby.

Paul,
I'm sure that you'll get 1000 diffent suggestions on this, but my
preference is Compaq. The DL380-G2 offers everything you'll need. You
can
get Dual processors, SCSI-RAID, etc, and they are fully Redhat
compliant.
We are using several of them with Redhat 7.2, and they are awesome.
They
are a little more expensive, but the support, service and quality you
get
from Compaq are unmatched in the Intel-based server industry in my
opinion.
Cost is probably around 4K/server once you outfit it with drives, etc.
Check CDW.com for prices and configurations.

GroupStudy is definitely causing me to age prematurely! Ok, I think the
list, newsfeed, and website are back in operation. I did disable the
archive search engine and may enable it later once things stabalize.

We need to obtain new hardware and we actually have the money to
purchase
said new hardware :-). With the free bandwidth from Swiftcomm and the
selling of banner advertisements, we have been able to create quite a
trust
fund. So I need suggestions on Intel based servers that are 1u in size.
The more redundancy and memory, the better. Probably SCSI. The new
server
needs to work under RedHat Linux.

Any suggestions!

Just thought I'd comment on this

Let me issue a disclaimer first:
I've never heard of these routers until this thread. I'm only
responding
to the information presented in these posts. I've been, so far, unable
to
verify the information presented for myself. If I'm mistaken, and the
product isn't a Cisco ripoff, then I apologize.

With that said:

Am I the only one who finds it troubling that this company has,
apparently,
copied Cisco's proprietary designs and is selling them as their own?
Sure they're cheaper. So is pirated software. Does it make it right to

support an operation like this? These guys even ripped off Cisco's
product
line names. Surely there's some legal recourse for Cisco, at least in
the
USA.
I guess I'm bothered because this group is so anti-NDA violation,
anti-software piracy, etcand then when something like this comes
out,
no one bothers to speak up against it. In fact, people seem excited
because they'll be able to put together a cheaper lab to practice for
the
CCIE lab. Personally, I don't see any difference between this and
willingly buying / exchanging pirated software. If I discover that the
claims are true, and that this company is only selling
reverse-engineered
Cisco products, I, for one, will not support them or their equipment.

Just my opinion...
Craig

I've been working on trying to eliminate the variables on each side of
the
VPN The unfortunate thing is, the other side is home, so I usually
wait
until the late evening/night to work on the remote side That's also
the
reason for the "frustrating" comment earlier. I know I could SSH into
it,
but, this isn't the only project I've been working on (as I'm sure a lot
of
you can relate)... So I'm going to hopefully wrap it up by this
weekend.

One of the main issues I was running into was the remote network was
subnetted from the main network so the ACLs got a little confusing. So
I've
changed the IP scheme on the remote side... This also brings me to
another
question; a rather newbie one, what other ports should be open(beside
500)?
I received an email from someone saying 50 & 51, does that sound right?
If
you have the, "allow any out and return in", settings for firewall
rules...
Do the ports still need to be opened (I would think not since there is
the
nat0 command?)? The other issue I'm looking into is the MTU size

Once I establish the tunnel and maintain connectivity I'll let y'all
know
what I find

Thanx for the help,

Subject: 3620 RAS [7:50397]

I have a 3620 that's functioning as a RAS server. We have issues with
connection speed for dial up users. They're getting below 28k. We're
currently running 2720 for the MICA firmware. I found and download 2740
firmware and would like to update, but according to the documentation on
the
TAC spe is only available to AS5X00's. How do I update the 3620? If
you
point me to an article or give me something step by step I'd be most
grateful. Thanks.
