If you want to save money, do the research and do it in pieces. If you want
it all there for you, buy the bundle. It just depends on how far you want to
go with your investment dollars. It also depends on if you are planning on
going further then just your ccnp. I learned a ton in setting up our lab and
pieceing it together router by router. Good luck with your lab building =)

Studying for CCNP switching Need a LAB??? [7:73174]

2003-07-29 Thread i d
Hi I am beginning my studies for my CCNP. I work with routers and switches
at work, and Before that I also took the courses. But I want to have a full
CCNP lab now while I read on my own to fiddle around with, and incorporate
into my Solaris/Win2000/2003/Linux network. I was wondering what equipment
is necessary?

Ok if someone would be so kind as to break it down by certification ex..
what i need for swithing, routing etc
Then what would I need overall?

Also has anyone put their CCNP lab equipment into a full network? If so
what does your network look like? Did you simulate separate LAN's/Countries
etc...

P.S. Do you think it's better to buy it all at once or as needed for each
individual test? I know I could probably get it done by just reading and
through my job and previous schooling. But i really want a lab so i could
turn that lab upside down. I want to be able to handle any situation, i
cant very well bring down my work routers or switches, but it can be
simulated in a lab without fear of knocking out an entire county.

Thanks for the help.

I usually see on EBAY that they sell complete CCNP labs, what do you think
of going this route? Are they good?

thanks sorry for the long winded post.

I passed the BCMSN test, but you can look at the Cisco documentation for
what should be on the test. If you've taken any courses for the CCNP, or
look at the info from Cisco, you will probably see that ATM, and LANE in
specific, is a very small percentage of the material covered, if at all.
So, if there are any questions on your particular test the percentage of
them should be relatively small. You should be able to miss all of them and
still pass, assuming that you get 100% on everything else. I sincerely
doubt that Cisco would include more than 30% of the questions that are
involving LANE...

Hi Listonians,

I have a Cisco 5500 in my lab rack. I wanted to know if anyone knows EXACTLY
what Supervisor Engine I need for the CCNP switching exam?

Do I need just a sup-III (WS-X5530-E1) or a (WS-X5530-E2)?

to quote a supplier I spoke with:

"The minimum SUPIII for CCNP studies, and the older CCIE labs is
WS-X5530-E2. The E2 and higher revs have the updated NFFC card that enables
MLS configurations. The WS-X5530-E1 (the label just says WS-X5530) does NOT
support MLS.)

I also heard I need a Route Switch Module (WS-X5302) for the exam.

Can someone confirm the necessary equipment I can use to complete the CCNP /
CCIE lab rack?

RE: CCNP switching Exam question [7:60537]

2003-01-07 Thread Kaminski, Shawn G
Destination-IP flow mask on the MLS-SE is the default flow mask, no
access-lists are being used on the MLS-RP.
Source-Destination-IP flow mask on the MLS-SE is used when there is a
standard access-list used on the MLS-RP.
IP-Flow flow mask on the MLS-SE is used when there is an extended
access-list used on the MLS-RP.

Depending on what flow mask is being used (depending on what access-list is
being used) will influence the type of MLS cache. If the Destination-IP flow
mask is used, then the MLS-SE cache maintains one MLS entry for each given
destination IP address. If the Source-Destination-IP flow mask is used, the
MLS-SE cache has a separate entry for each source and destination pair. If
the IP-Flow flow mask is used, the MLS-SE cache has a separate entry for
each unique combination of source and destination IP address, each protocol
port number, and each type of IP protocol.

CCNP switching Exam question [7:60537]

2003-01-07 Thread David Ristau
640-604 exam description says under multilayer switching topic
"apply flow masks to influence the type of MLS cache"

what is your interpretation of this statement.

I know there are 3 types of Flow Masks, Destination-IP,
Source-Destination-IP, and IP-Flow.

I also know we can control the MLS cache via the aging time parameter
i.e. SET MLS AGINGTIME 272 or
SET MLS AGINGTIME FAST ...

I don't understand how to control the MLS cache by applying access lists on
the switch.

I can stop packets coming in by placing a deny access filter on an interface
but don't understand how to "influence the type of MLS cache". Am I reading
to deep into this?

thanks for your opinion.

You have to use it cause you need to restrict the local traffic in Switch
Block instead of going through Core.
As you can specify S3/S4 as root/secondary bridge, there won't be bridging

ccnp switching - capus network design [7:57534]

2002-11-15 Thread pauldongso
Hi All,

Am reading ccnp switching exam guide (cisco press), I am very confused
by the design example provided in the book.

A provided design of typical switch block:

L2 S1 L2 S2 (Layer2 switching)
\ /
 \ /
\ /
\ /
/\
/ \
 /\
 L3 S3 --- L3 S4 (Layer 3 switching) <- question is here
\ /
 to core layer

My question is why the direct link between L3 S3 and L3 S4 is required?
Won't it be a bad design which would impose the potential of bridging loop?
Since L3 switching is used, HSRP and routing protocol will provide
enough route failure detection and redundancy function.

Is this a practical design in the real world?

Thanks

Paul

ccnp switching passed!!! [7:57482]

2002-11-14 Thread Leonardo Rocha
People, yesterday I took the 640-604 exam and passed with 901, I did spend
37 minutes to answer the questions which were so well defined.
Used only the cisco press certification guide for the 504 exam and some lab,
I can say the material for 504 covers very well the 604 contents. So, those
who has the "old" material can keep tranquil.

For who will do the exam, good luck and thanks for the group help.

Actually, there's a range command that allows you to modify multiple ports
at a time. At least on the Native IOS on the 6500 and 4000s. But I agree
with you, I still like the CatOS better.

This is correct. Remember that the Catalyst switch line was originally made
by Kalpana (and Grand Junction sort of), which developed the set-based
commands independently of any Cisco involvement. Cisco wisely realizes that
having a "unified front" makes their products more attractive to us lowly
engineers, and IMO the unification is a long time coming! ;-)

I hear cisco is doing away with set based. Apparently the ccie lab includes
two 3550's which are IOS based. Whoever told me this said cisco bought the
set based system and created IOS themselves, so the plan is to do away with
set based and go completely with their own stuff.
All that may be wrong, just what I heard.

I can't speak from a great deal of experience here, but set based
switches seem easier to configure, because you can change settings for
multiple ports with one command.

For example, on a CAT5K, to change duplex speed to full on a whole
module (12 port 10bFL) I type

Set port duplex 3/1-12 full

And it sets it on all 12 interfaces. Doing this in an IOS based switch
would require the use of notepad and cut and paste :)

It would be a shame if Cisco did migrate away from the set based
language.

What do others think?

CCNP Switching 640-604 Format [7:51140]

2002-08-10 Thread goh

Hi Everyone,

Hope i am not violating any law for posting this question.

I would like to know whether with the new format to the Switching exam, will
there be more emphasis on the configuration commands (CLI or IOS)???
I heard the old version (504) has little emphasis on the commands and
emphasise on the theoritical aspect. With the intro of the simulation
questions, i think the commands are now more important right???

Hope to hear from those who had taken the 640-604 paper. Thanks in advance

2002-01-16 Thread steve skinner

hi,

when i took the ccnp exams i noticed a lot of this..

they seem to slip in the odd question on atm in the routing/support and
switching exam`s (i actually saw about 4 questions)..

so i think you best bet is to be familiar with it but don`t concentrate on
it..

Thanks for that,

I am schedualed to take the exam in early Feb.

I read the chapter on ATM and also have a background with ATM so i thought
it was pretty easy; but i remember that it was a bear to learn it for the

Moroni,
I studied hard on ATM LAN switching. I passed 640-504 on 01-02-02. There was
no question about ATM in the exam. I checked with cisco.com and found ATM
was removed.
Good luck,

I passed 640-504 on 01-02-02. I studied deeply for ATM LAN. That was my
mistake, I didnot check out with cisco.com to see: No ATM technologies in
the exam. In the exam that I took, there are no ATM questions. You will be
hit hard on STP, MLS, Multicast and Cisco property protocols...
I am happy because for reading ATM anyway.
Good luck,

FW: CCNP Switching - Mapping MAC address to IP Multicast [7:10]

Don't worry about MAC-to-IP Multicast Address conversion, only IP Multicast
Address-to-MAC conversion. What you're doing is converting the decimal
Multicast IP address to hexadecimal.

Here's what you need to remember:
1.All Multicast IP addresses range from 224 through 239 in the first octet.
2.All Multicast MAC addresses begin with "01.00.5e"
3.When converting from decimal to hexadecimal, the second octet of the
Multicast IP address must fall between 0 and 127. If it is more than 127,
you must subtract 128 from it to get between 0 and 127. 4.Cisco doesn't
expect you to memorize the decimal-to-hexadecimal conversions. They will
give you a chart on the exam.

Here's a few examples:

1.Given the address 223.128.37.255, map this to its equivalent Multicast MAC
address.

Answer: You can't because the first octet 223 doesn't fall between the
Multicast range of 224 through 239.

2.Given the address 225.128.37.255, map this to its equivalent Multicast MAC
address.

Answer:
A.Remember, all Multicast MAC addresses begin with "01.00.5e". So, the 225
portion (first octet) of the Multicast IP address becomes 01.00.5e. B.The
second octet does not fall between 0 and 127, so subtract 128 from it.
128-128=0. 0 converted to hexadecimal is 00. C.The third octet just gets
converted to hexadecimal. It doesn't have to fall between 0 and 127. So, 37
converted to hexadecimal is 25. D.The fourth octet just gets converted to
hexadecimal. It doesn't have to fall between 0 and 127. So, 255 converted to
hexadecimal is e1.

So, the Multicast IP address 225.128.37.255 converted, or mapped, to its
equivalent Multicast MAC address is 01.00.5e.00.25.e1

Group,

I am studying for CCNP Switching and have come across 2 chapters of
multicast. Multicast could get very tricky and in depth. The best and worst
things about Cisco Press is the level of detail they get into. They give you
more detail than you need for the exam (which is great becuase you really
learn the processes inside out) so it is hard to tell how much of it you
need to know. This is the opposite of Lammle's books becuase they don't give
enough detail and are ready for the garbage can after you finish your exams
(useless as an on the job reference guide).
My question is how much in depth the exam is on the topic of multicasting.

Thanks for the help.

Re: CCNP-Switching and ATM LANE - - Urgent [7:6210]

2001-05-29 Thread Michael L. Williams

How many versions are there? We are talking Cisco exam 640-504, right?

Well, I checked Cisco's website:

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/10/wwtraining/certprog/testing/current_exam
s/640-504.html

According to the above link, ATM and LANE are listed as Network Protocols
covered by the exam, so I have to give you that... (geez, I hate when I do
research and see that I'm *wrong*! =)

However, I can honestly say that I don't recall ATM/LANE questions on the
switching exam, except maybe something about basic definitions of LEC, LES,
LECS, etc..

So, let me amend my previous statement of "ATM LANE is not covered" with
"ATM is barely mentioned, so if you learn the basic terms of ATM, that
should be sufficient" hehe

Mike W.

(At least I'll admit when I'm wrong.. hehe even tho the official
Cisco course for BCMSN doesn't mention ATM/LANE as being part of the
course strange see below link)

one month ago and ATM LANE is on the test. Expect questions on LES,BUS,

If you mean the switching (BCMSN) exam, the only reference that i found for
LANE was in the trunking protocols... In the study guide, there is a table
mentioning the different protocols (isl, 802.1Q, 802.10 and, of course
LANE).
But i doubt one is supposed to know how LANE works.

CCNP-Switching and ATM LANE - - Urgent [7:6210]

Hi,

I was just reviewing the Exam Blueprint for CCNP Switching 2.0 and I noticed
that it included Atm Lane. The BCMSN course doesn't cover LANE, and it's
also skipped by the Sybex and Coriolis Books. Can anyone tell me if the
exam blueprint is accurate, or if this is a bit of misinformation that's
held over from CCNP-switching 1.0.

Thanks All,

Hi.. May I know what is the passing mark for CCNP switching? How many
questions and time allow? Whether the mark is from the scale from 300 to
1000 like what CCNA 2.0 do??

The sample Bosons are free but I would highly recommend paying for the full
version. It's a great test. It's difficult and cover more stuff than the
real exam but if you score pretty well on the Boson, you're almost
guaranteed to pass the exam in my opinion.

How about command based questions in this exam ??
D u have to know details like default timers values in STP etc ?
Boson asks u lot of fill in the blanck question which u have to remember
full command, it would be bit easy if they ask u multiple choice.

Thanks in advance.

Download the latest test from http://www.boson.com

They have 2 x 12 free questions for BCMSN (among a lot of other questions).

If you like what you see and want to get more questions, you can do that
very easily, and it's only about $30.-

The switching exam does have multicasting in it, when I took the test it
basically went right along with the material covered in the Cisco Press
BCMSN book (which I highly recommend as a major study resource for this
exam.)

I used the Cisco Press book as my only study source and passed it with a
pretty high score, as long as you make sure you understand everything
covered the test really wasn't too bad.

Hope this helps.

I guess the answer to your question is IT DEPENDS. I did not get a lot of
multicasting question but some people did. The only advise I have for you is
that you should study and know it because all the questions about
Multicasting were easy questions and could give you additional marks. So
don't sweat its relatively easy.
