Is it possible that you erase your flash too and the router is booting up
from the mini IOS in ROM? Try to sho flash and see if it has an IOS. If
not restore or copy from tftp.

Re: MSFC

2000-09-12 Thread Timothy Mark Jones

The reason it's in router(boot) mode is because you've erased the "boot
system flash bootflash:" command that's needed to find the boot image.

Do a "show flash bootflash:" on the MSFC and check for the second image
listed and copy the name down EXACTLY (not the boot image name).

Enter config mode on the MSFC and enter the following:

boot system bootflash:.image name from flash

It should look something like this: boot system
bootflash:c6msfc-js-mz.120-7.XE1.bin

Do a write mem and then reload the MSFC.

You should then be able to get your full IOS loaded.

RE: MSFC

You need to change the boot config register back to what it was before. I
don't have the numbers off the top of my head, but you probably changed it
to 2142 in order to remove the password. You need to change it back (You
did write it down, right?)

RE: MSFC

Jeff,

Try this link: http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/14.html , it has the
recovery procedures if you have erased the msfc's bootloader flash. It is
not too bad if you have a 4500/4700 router to reinstall the image.
Otherwise you can try the xmodem procedure (it did not work for me). I had
to have TAC RMA a replacement flash. It's embarrassing but there is just
not a good recovery procedure if you don't have a 4500/4700 handy.

Re: MSFC Routing

2000-06-30 Thread Andy Harding

Daryn,

you don't say which switch you can't ping from the server

do you have a vlan interface (as opposed to a vlan) defined in the 2924
switch? by default the IOS will only create an interface for vlan 1, and
will only let you have one interface live at one time - a bit like having
the sc0 interface assigned to a particular vlan on the Cat5X00/6X00 series.

I'm assuming that you can see the vlan on the 2924 - ie it is talking vtp to
the 6500, and the vlans are being propogated (the vtp communities do match
don't they?). do the encapsulations on the trunk match? try turning
pruning off - keep the number of variables down until you get them talking
initiailly

Does the trunking work between the two 6500s? Can you ping back and forth
between the two MSFCs? is HSRP working or are the two interfaces both in
active mode because they're not talking to each other?

hth

Re: MSFC [7:30668]

2002-01-02 Thread MADMAN

You have three choices.

1 Treat the two MSFC's as two individual routers
2 Config-sync, basically you configure the routers individually but from
the active router
3 SRM, single router mode, you have a single router config, one active
one standby.

of coarse this is ASSuming your running hybrid mode

In Native mode the box is just a big router and if you have two MSFCs
one is active the other standby.

Depending on your topology. If you have only one Cat, I would definitely
configure it as two separate routers. However if you have two Cats each
with dual MSFCs then I would configure them as Active and Standby. With the
first scenario mentioned above it gives you redundant routing capabilities
immediately whereas the second option takes a few seconds to kick in.

This is another option you can try. Single Router Mode (SRM). It

As soon as you turn on single-router-mode, it will sync up the redundant
MFSC on that switch automatically. Of course this will need to be
performed on every switch that has redundant MFSC's installed. There are
also a few things that have to be checked first i.e. both MSFC's are
running Cisco IOS release 12.1(8a)E2 or later, stuff like that. That
link I sent earlier explains what needs to take place pretty well.

RE: MSFC [7:30668]

2002-01-10 Thread Theo Christopoulos

The choice of running your MSFCs depends on your COMPANY'S POLICIES.
You will need to test the different standby settings for your MSFCs.
With our tests, we noted that both standby techniques had some
nesciences. We decided to stick with running with the MSFC's independent
of each other.

ADVANTAGES of separate MSFCs in one 6509 : Predictable workings of
MSFCs, isolated.

DISADVANTAGES of other Methods : Temporary rooting loops(while updates
were sent from 1 MSFC to the other), loss of configuration, loss of
config changes. Etc. Generally, we could not predict at which state the
MSFCs would be at a particular point in time.

We used EIGRP as the routing protocol of choice. It works well, with the
2 MSFCs in the 6509, providing redundancy between the 2 MSFCs

Hope this helps,

AKI

Re: MSFC IP helper-addressing [7:9736]

2001-06-25 Thread Tony Medeiros

I would stay away from directed broadcasts for IP helper commands. Remember
that ip helper not only forwards DHCP, but Netbios and NTP stuff too. You
can turn the unneeded broadcast off with the "no ip forward protocol"
commands.

Try and just use unicasts on you helper commands and watch utilization. I
know that there are a lot of bugs related to this command on MSFC's. A
different version might be needed.

but I can4t remember the any special case this moment.

If an access switch port trusts CoS from the IP phone, then why is COS
re-written to 0 on the MSFC after you went through all the trouble to
ensure
that it was set it to a non-zero value? Doesn't the CoS need to be
preserved
after leaving the access switch?

Re: MSFC CPU Utilization Pegged at 99%....but a sh proc cpu does not reveal anything past 1%

2001-02-04 Thread Robert Padjen

Check to see if you have a multicast (or several)
stream going through. We are seeing the first signs of
a bug on ours where it appears that all packets are
written to MLS and process switching.

RE: MSFC CPU Utilization Pegged at 99%....but a sh proc cpu does not reveal anything past 1%

2001-02-05 Thread Greene, Patrick

Actually traced the issue down to a device (possibly a 2948 Switch) sending
a stream of UDP packets causing the CPU to peg. Filtered all UDP and
everything calmed down. In the process of tracing down the culprit. Thanks
for everyone's input.
