Re: Stus-List Yanmar push button died

2014-09-17 Thread Nauset Beach via CnC-List
Nate

Had the same issue last week on my Yanmar 3GM30F with a B Type engine panel.
Was getting near complete voltage drop across the 2 terminals of the key
switch when the key was turned on and nothing from the button. Turned out
to be the wiring harness plug at the back of the panel. Most of the wires
were corroded inside the plug though all looked well from the outside. The
plug was cut out and the wires connected directly. Works like a charm.

So as Dave said, check all your wiring in the start circuit before you start
throwing $$$ at it replacing parts.

Nate, it may not be the switch. I have an original in perfect working
condition if catch my drift...

Check your battery ground/cabling/connections. Let me know if it is the
switch and if so, you can have it.

Re: Stus-List Yanmar push button died

2014-09-17 Thread dwight via CnC-List
Had that same sort of intermittent problem with my Universal M4-30 a couple
of years back...solved with no recurrences after I changed out the starter
push button and redid the fuse connections (2@30 amp) and cleaned all the
wire connections at the panel...the fuses I believe most likely caused the
problem but I did all the work at the same time when I had the panel removed
so I can't say that with certainty, but on removing the little glass 30 amp
fuses the metal ends fell right off the glass, so I think the fuse itself
had deteriorated and most likely caused my problems...looked OK to the eye
until I removed it...no tellin how old that fuse was, one was in a fuse
holder with a badly corroded spring and the other was just soldered to the
connecting wires either end, that fell apart when I touched it as one metal
fuse end separated from the glass tube

2014-09-17 Thread Tony Wroblewski via CnC-List
I have had the same problem on my Yanmar 3gm30 for years. Exactly as you
describe. Since it would start on the second try all the time it was no
problem. One time it wouldn't start at all for 10 minutes and caused me to find
the source. Tightened the battery cables and no problems for a year. Starting
to happen again and will try the cables again.

Unless there is such a thing as a centerboard 37, the 6'7" draft is a killer

My opinion is that the 37+ is a better choice...that's why I bought one. The
LF38 usually rates ~140 and the 37+ is ~75. The trouble with low ratings is
that you have to be a good enough sailor to sail to them. Every second counts
and every mistake can cost you the race. I had my ass handed to me in a
friendly race by a Pearson 32. They rated 168. It was mostly a down wind run
and they chose a less down wind angle. I doesn't hurt that they have a kevlar
sail and hard bottom paint polished to 1000 grit.

As for pointing the 37+ can point very high and even power through a pinch. It
is easy to accidentally pinch up because the boat doesn't realy talk back very
much.

The C&C 30, the C&C 34+, the C&C 36+ and the C&C 37+ are all very similar
layout and design. The C&C 40 seems to be the predecessor to the 37+ and the
C&C 121 is the successor.

Re: Stus-List Landfall 38

2014-09-17 Thread Frederick G Street via CnC-List
To the original question: I’ve owned my LF38 for about ten years now, and while
I don’t race (officially…), I’ve been very happy with the sailing abilities of
my boat. She points very well, even with old sails, and can be a very
comfortable, fast boat even when the sea conditions deteriorate. And the
4’-11” draft, while probably not a performance enhancer, has come in handy at
times in my cruising. If I ever decide to take the boat out of the Great Lakes
and down to warmer climes, I can see the draft being a definite plus in, say,
the Bahamas.

And the layout and general amenities have worked well for me and my family. I
love having a large head near the companionway, as opposed to up by the
V-berth; and the galley is great.

So if you’re looking for at least part-time cruising, the LF38 is a good
choice.  I’ll let someone else who has raced theirs to chime in on that;
suffice it to say that my boat can hold her own even in “unofficial” races with
larger boats (we easily kept up with a Mason 43 ketch flying all sails several
years back, and have had similar experiences with many other boats).

Re: Stus-List Landfall 38

2014-09-17 Thread Michael Brown via CnC-List
You may also want to take a look at the fleets in your area and see who you
will be racing against.
If the LF38 you are interested in PHRFs in around 165 for white sail that could
put you into a
varied fleet, possibly a lot of lighter 30 - 32' that will leave you in the
dust around the cans.

You didn't mention if you intend to fly spinnaker. For many of the larger boats
they will be in the
spinnaker fleet for the long distance races, and bowsprits with asymmetrical is
common.

When the boats in the fleet are similar in displacement, sail area to
displacement and basic
design then sailing to your PHRF number is a big question. Unfortunately now it
is a bigger
question if you are heading out on a 14,000 lb boat with a big symmetrical and
racing a
J/80 or such what is the wind speed.

Hello all, Well it is with mixed emotions that I've put Lolita up for sale.
she is listed on CL and SailboatListings I'd add the link but I don't want to
break any rules. I'm kinda sad about it... I've really grown quite attached to
her. We been through a lot together over the last few years and what a fun
boat to sail!!! We just really need a little more on the creature comforts and
I'm a bit too tall for her accommodations. Anyway, let me know if you have any
leads. I think this boat is a bargain, especially with all the new systems...
We're still researching options for our next boat and always open to
suggestions. A trade with someone looking to downsize is always an option as
well! Danny___

Stus-List Landfall 38

2014-09-17 Thread Jean-Francois J Rivard via CnC-List

I cruise and race a 34+ (AKA 34/36, 36XL, 34/36 XL)

Due to it's relatively new design, it's very roomy for it's size: King
size berth in the aft stateroom, + normal person sized twin bed in the
salon + normal person sized v_berth + separate shower stall. And so far,
it's a killer around the cans. We have raced it a few times and when we
have our act together we leave the cruiser fleet behind and make the sport
 boats guys wonder what happened...

As an additional point, 2 races into it the lake PHRF committee was at my
dock double checking my measurements to make sure I wasn't cheating :-)

No cheating, I did install a 2 bladed Martec folder and my bottom was
stripped down / painted with 3 coats of Trinidad Pro / wet sanded with 320
grit paper / burnished with a bronze wool fitted to a high speed buffer.
My sails are original "Cast Iron Heavy" Haarstick Dacron from 1990 but
they have not been used much have a good shape according to the loft.
They are not fancy plastic sails like most of my competitors use.

Compared to the LF 38, The 34+ has a longer waterline, is about 4000 lbs
lighter, and has a bigger sail area.. Being high power / relatively low
weight it's more work to sail and a bit tender but it's a hoot to sail.

If you want comfy / less work / less fiddling with multiple adjustment the
LF makes sense. If you want a surprisingly comfortable racer / cruiser
the 34+ series are hard to beat, being pretty light it's great in light
air and "almost sport boat" maneuverable.

 Tomatoes / Tomahtoes :-)

 Good Luck.

 Best regards,

 -Francois

I had a similar problem which turned out to be the starter solenoid. They are

Re: Stus-List Viking 33 for sale...

2014-09-17 Thread Danny Haughey via CnC-List
Hi Richard! I'm a little leery of being a 2 boat owner. Mostly because i don't
want to pay storage for Lolita as it just takes away from what I may or may not
get from the sale price. However, currently I have a thought of hauling her to
my house and finishing the restoration as a project if I don't get too much
interest here before haul out. Actually, I'm thinking I should do it if I have
to store it this winter. I think the price to haul to my house and back would
be comparable to storage fees. Right now all she really needs is a finishing.
Paint and varnish below and I could chip away at that all winter for the cost
of the finishes and such. Trying to do that with the boat 30 miles from the
house is problematic. The commute time alone could be all coating time! I
could also remove the rest of the deck hardware and seal the rest of the
penetrations, just so i can say I did!. It may or may not raise the value I
can ask but, it would sure make her more desirable. Worst case scenario is we
have a great little weekender/day sailor for next year! I wish I was talented
enough to spray the decks myself I don't really want to roll and tip and I
don't really want to remove all the hardware and not coat the decks. After all
coating is the easy part! Who knows...another adventure begins I guess...

The 37+ had at least 3 standard keel choices - centerboard, deep and shoal
wing. As always people customized them so there are variants on the market. I
believe the 34+ was the same although I don't recall ever seeing a centerboard
version.

Re: Stus-List Landfall 38

2014-09-17 Thread dwight via CnC-List
Unless you are a really competitive sailor the LF 38 wins hands down over
most comparable others.it's a great sailboat that offers a lot of everything
about sailing to its owners.forget the more work to sail stuff involved with
other more modern designs and get yourself an easy boat to sail which rates
high on the Dellenbaugh stability curve and which from many reliable owners
accounts on this list sails very well and I agree with them on what they say
from experience.I love sailing my old 1974 C&C 35 MKII for that very reason,
how she rides the water so easy on a mean sea, I mean, she is also very
slippery but you should try her out first if you can for yourself.the
Landfall 38 is a superb boat, which is a classic to cruise or race.but be
aware that race conditions will not always be kind to her design.I don't
believe that she will do well in light air or short distance races aginst
newer designs

I cruise and race a 34+ (AKA 34/36, 36XL, 34/36 XL)

Due to it's relatively new design, it's very roomy for it's size: King size
berth in the aft stateroom, + normal person sized twin bed in the salon +
normal person sized v_berth + separate shower stall. And so far, it's a
killer around the cans. We have raced it a few times and when we have our
act together we leave the cruiser fleet behind and make the sport boats guys
wonder what happened...

My
sails are original "Cast Iron Heavy" Haarstick Dacron from 1990 but they
have not been used much have a good shape according to the loft. They are
not fancy plastic sails like most of my competitors use.

If you want a surprisingly comfortable racer / cruiser the
34+ series are hard to beat, being pretty light it's great in light air and
"almost sport boat" maneuverable.

Tomatoes / Tomahtoes :-)

Good Luck.

Best regards,

Re: Stus-List Yanmar push button died

2014-09-17 Thread Edward Levert via CnC-List
I have found for years that the contact in the push button switch can
become, for lack of technical terms, corroded and will not pass current on
the first push. That push and subsequent ones cleans the contact enough for
current to pass to the solenoid starting the engine. The symptoms appear
after the switch has not been used for a length of time or the switch is
old. Start testing the switch first before you work to the solenoid.
Switches are relatively inexpensive.

Re: Stus-List Landfall 38

2014-09-17 Thread Tracy Hirsh via CnC-List
I have heretofore been a quietly appreciative reader of the posts here at
the list but I feel compelled to post to this subject. We own a 37+
Centerboard and we LOVE it!

We also were looking for something we could do some coastal cruising in
but, we have been avid Sunday racers in a Pearson 30 and then a Tartan 30
for the past 22 years. We didn't want to give up racing or any chance of
winning for the potential of getting a few cruises in each year with the
kids. After about a year of research and looking at boats, we narrowed our
search down to 2 boats: the Sabre 402 and the C&C 37+. With their interior
layouts very similar, the C&C was our choice due to ease of handling. My
husband has single handed it successfully in Sunday races on numerous
occasions. Here our main competition on Sundays is an e33, an Olson25, an
S2 7.9 and sometimes the U20s. Most are considerably smaller, much lighter
boats. If we have any wind at all we have no trouble keeping up and, with
8-12 kts, we can usually come from our last-to-start position and catch
them all in the 5 miles of the standard club race. No fancy sails or
equipment needed. It has been a fun boat to race and it is a dream to
cruise, even with teenagers aboard!

Here on the Gulf Coast and, in particular, Mobile Bay, depth is always an
issue and with our 4'11" up to 7' draft we have no problems. Although there
is potential for problems with the centerboard due to its configuration (we
- my 16 year old daughter - dropped it accidentally once from full up and
broke the cable AND tore/pushed out the lead on the keel housing), a little
diligence, ie keeping the centerboard line tied on the cleat until you
actually mean to let it out, has kept disaster at bay.

A lot of the 37+ boats have the wing keel configuration. This draws 5'11".

I highly recommend the 37+, which is a 39'6" OAL boat, over the LF38 for
racing. It was designed for it! For cruising they have similar attributes.
Check them both out and see what you think.

Re: Stus-List Landfall 38

2014-09-17 Thread Charlie Nelson via CnC-List
I have a '34' centerboard version, which was an option in the early 90s on the
34 series (including the +, the XL and the R).

I think the board design was adopted or copied from the 37 which was an earlier
model but not available new in 1993 (or was out of my price range) one or the
other!

During the build time of my 34 (between 1993 and 1995), C&C changed the name to
the 36 (including the +, XL and R) which was identical in hull form AFAIK but
now had the transom steps. This added confusion but was more consistent with
the actual LOA of the boat, which is actually 35.5 feet.

This version of the boat rates 120 in our local PHRF fleet and displaces 13,500
lbs by a load cell measurement. I think the R version rates down in the 80s and
is claimed to displace ~ 10,000 lbs. Same hull shape, few if any cruising
amenities and a deep fin keel of about 7.5 ft. Except at a few coastal marinas,
this kind of draft would require it be kept on a mooring just about anywhere in
the 'inner banks' of NC.

The 37+ had at least 3 standard keel choices - centerboard, deep and shoal
wing. As always people customized them so there are variants on the market. I
believe the 34+ was the same although I don't recall ever seeing a centerboard
version.

Good luck,

Any other insights are appreciated. Thanks in advance,
