Just remember you'll get Canadian spec paint, which doesn't have anything at
all that actually stops fouling, nor any anti-slime additives.

The CSR yard in Des Moines is even closer. But, I can save 25-30% due to
exchange rate and no sales tax. Also, there’s a super Yanmar mechanic that I
want to do some work.

Fun adventure too...

Another good policy someone told me about years ago is to buy all your

Paul — one spec you didn’t list was weight. I think you’ll find the Trojans to
be heavier than the Sam’s Club batteries; this means heavier plates and longer
life, as well as better resistance to abuse from under-charging or
over-discharging.

2018-04-05 Thread Dreuge via CnC-List
Yes good point Fred, pair for pair they are near amp-hr equivalent.

I have been planning on going with lead acid GC2 golf cart batteries. I am
leaning towards Trojans because of their great reputation, but it is hard to
ignore the Sam’s Club GC2 at $85 each, amounting to over a $100 savings per
pair.

Does anyone have experience with the Sam’s Club 6V batteries?

Here are the specs and prices from Sam’s Club and the local Batteries Plus
which sells Trogan.

GC2 Duracell (215 A*hrs @20A) $85 12m warranty $0.40/Ahr
EGC2 Duracell (230 A*hrs @20A) $118 12m warranty$0.50/Ahr

Trojan T-105 (225 A*hrs) $139 18m warranty $0.62/Ahr

Multi-phase charging: bulk charge(80%) absorption charge(20%), and float
charge. The values of the charging voltage changes for different phases but
also varies with different type(i.e. Lead-Acis, AGM, Gel). Most decent
battery charges operate via multi-phase and allow one to select the bank
battery type.

Rod, that's how the email lists works.

I use Google Gmail message rules to automatically move all
cnc-list@cnc-list.com to a different folder. I
also look at emails in conversation view. I can turn off notifications for the
cnc-list@cnc-list.com folder and when I look at

conversation is shown as in line item.

If you don't like it make something else and see if you can drum up as much
support or more than the list.

The advantage of email is that it is ubiquitous. No special apps or hardware
platforms. And it is pretty lean on bandwidth for anybody with slow
connections. I like that the messages get pushed to my phone regardless of
whether or not I request them. Even in a no internet service area I can review
emails that were pushed hours ago.

If you still want to go ahead, consider all the _worst_ scenarios, when you are
still on good terms. Things like who pays for a damage (not as trivial question
as you might think) - if you decide that the person who did the damage, you
might encourage hiding it. Similarly, how much you should expect annually for
maintenance and improvements. What if one person wants to hire the yard to
replace the bulb and the other is willing to swap the engine himself over the
weekend.

Some of these questions may sound ridiculous, but the time to deal with them is
before you sign.

If/when we find a new member we will definitely be doing a new agreement - does
anyone have suggestions for boilerplate partnership agreements (or want to

In Canada you could check Total Battery. I see a Trojan deep cycle Group 31
listed
for $282.80

http://webstore.totalbattery.com/product-p/31xhs.htm

The claimed 130 amp hours is good as is the reserve capacity at 225 minutes.
Many Group 31s are around 100 and 190.

If you're a boat us member, they'll did market analysis for you for free.
I've used them in the past summer boat shopping and their numbers agreed with
some broker's analysis at the same time.
Then you could get a quote for the rigging and adjust.
David is right though, if you were selling with the boat priced at the high end
of market value you might have the boat sitting a while.  You can't go by
listing values.
Boat us will give you sales comps.  A broker has access to sold numbers too.

Therein lies the rub...what is fair market value?   In today's market you
really don't know until you get the reality check of "Well I think its worth
$X"  at 12 months later not sold or it is sold for a percentage of

Sams Club had their private label golf carts for $89 each. Like their AGMs, I
think they are Dekas.
I will one day switch to golf carts when I figure out how to mount them. They
will not fit where I have my batteries now. One nice thing about them is abuse
is not instant death. Mild overcharging can be fixed with water and mild
undercharging will resolve with equalization. Gels never get better once abused.

This is pretty common with aircraft and I might be able to find a sample
contract from AOPA. Once common issue is *I* think a SSB and a nice vertical
profile weather radar are really needed and the other 3 guys fly the plane on
20 mile trips for burgers and think I am nuts and don’t want to pay for it.
Another thing is what to do when someone can’t pay for whatever reason and who
is liable for damages. If the engine blows next week, what if X doesn’t have
his share for a new engine? Do you have a way to make him pay or take over his
share or something? If I rip the new spinnaker, is that on me or on everyone?
It really helps to have some feeling for what everyone is expecting.
One example: At work a buddy was complaining something broke on his new
runabout and the yard wanted $100 to fix it. He was horrified at this expense.
I told him I would be on my knees thanking God for ANY kind of boat yard bill
without 4 figures in it!

Multi-phase charging: bulk charge(80%) absorption charge(20%), and float
charge. The values of the charging voltage changes for different phases but
also varies with different type(i.e. Lead-Acis, AGM, Gel). Most decent

this may all go perfectly smoothly, but if we don’t I’d like to have advice for
the best way(s) to proceed.

Stus-List Mast sensor upgrade experience requested

2018-04-05 Thread Francois Rivard via CnC-List
Hi James,

I have a 34/36 and I did replace the sensor twice.. Once with the mast off
and once "in-situ"/

My mast did have a conduit and I used the old wire as a messenger line as
mentioned before. Really straightforward / no issues.

The harder part is that I had to fabricate a custom aluminum bracket to
accommodate the new sensor and mount it solidly. I was glad I had the mast
off as it took a lot of measuring / fitting / trimming to make sure that
the bracket was as long / wide as possible to spread the load / fit in the
mounting holes / not interfere with the halyards and sheaves / VHF antenna
mount / tricolor.

Also, while the mast was off I did a fair amount of cleanup / refreshed
the spreader boots / replaced deck light bulbs / etc.

Long story short it was 80 bucks more than well spent to take the mast down
/ get it all done right / clean, lube, easily service everything I could
while it was down.

The 2nd time I replaced it (It appeared to have been nailed by lightning
surge). That was "in-situ" but then all the hard stuff was already done it
was plug and play.

My 2 cents.

34-36R with a pretty skinny tall mast?anybody have any experience upgrading
the wind sensor and VHF while the mast is in-place? I need to know if
there?s a conduit running and what to expect as I may be the person scaling
the mast and I want to make the least number of trips to the top?

And?if somebody?s done this, what where the learning moments?

Thanks.

Hopefully, on line you can find some comparable sales to establish the value.

Without a defined buyout, this is kind of a pain. My first guess would be the
person leaving owes you 25% of fair market value.

Hey all -

I’ve been part of a boat partnership for the past 9 years with three of my
friends. This partnership has lasted over a series of boats and we’ve had very
few issues with the whole arrangement.

Presently however one of the partners is wishing to be bought out or to sell
their share, just before a re-rigging project.

Since we don’t have an agreement in place we have to navigate these waters
ourselves, but I wanted to see if you guys had experience or knew what the most
common buyout arrangements (i.e. what agreement *might* we have signed had we
signed one 9 years ago?). If we find a buyer we all like in short order then
this may all go perfectly smoothly, but if we don’t I’d like to have advice for

Re: Stus-List Spring Projects

2018-04-05 Thread Chuck S via CnC-List
Hadn't hauled the last two years so I have a rather long list. It's like a
refit:

Rewire the mast, changed all lights to LED (mast is out)
Replace sheeves and axles
Replace upper section of furler
Removed all halyards and washed, scrubbed and soaked in Downy to soften them.
Replace two halyards, repurpose old ones
Paint mast
Replace spreader tip protectors
Repair two floor boards at home
Replace two solar fans
Heavy wet sand old bottom paint to change type, paint new
Pull chainplates and Repair wet core
Replace windows (just finished making templates)
Paint deck and paint nonskid areas with Kiwi Grip
PoliGlow the topsides
Relaunch, step the mast, tune the rig, etc

This is what we did when we had a partner on our last boat. He wanted out for
life reasons so we agreed on half the fair market value as my buyout.
