I used a large Harken cam cleat for the spin halyard on my 35.

I would use a clutch, not a cam cleat. There's a lot of strain on the
halyard and you don't need it oozing through a cam cleat under load.

Chuck,

Was thinking the same thing but the hole spacing of the ocean cleat may not
work at 2 1/16” vs 1 ½” for the Har150 standard AL cleat. The APS site does
not provide any details and have not found the “parking cleat” on the Harken
site. Looks like it is sourced from another company.

A call to APS is probably needed.

WRT #3, a friend's boat has a std cam cleat on the mast for the spin halyard,
but it's offset from the center line of the halyard.  Mastman or foredeck can
"park" the halyard there by pulling the halyard off center toward the cleat.
By pulling the tail of the halyard, it pops free of the cam cleat without
anyone being at the mast.RonWild CheriC 30-1STL (where freezing rain has

Yes.  Here are three options for you to consider.  Two of them require a winch
on the mast.

My rigger buddy and I were re-configuring the standing rigging on a large
cruising boat.  We installed Lewmar rope clutches on the mast.  However, this
boat had winches below the rope clutches.  The set up works well.  The clutches
are kept closed while hoisting and tensioning with the winches.  There are horn
cleats under the winches for the lines to be stowed on.

On Touche', I have one jib halyard "on the mast".  It is my cruising halyard
but doubles as the spare racing jib halyard.  It exits the mast high, runs down
to a winch then to a horn cleat.  If you don't have a winch on your mast, they
are easily, and cheaply, found on eBay.

Third option is more interesting and isn't exactly what you're asking for but I
thought I would mention it for you to think about.  For Touche's #1 spinnaker
halyard, we use a spinnaker halyard parking cleat.  This is a slick bracket
that holds a cam cleat "wrong side out" for temporary stopping of the halyard
while the crew tidies up after a hoist.  It works really well.  Here's the link:

http://www.apsltd.com/spinnaker-halyard-parking-bracket.html

On hoisting, the halyard is pulled down and outboard.  It locks into the cam
cleat.  When things calm down, the crew pulls the tail and the halyard is
pulled towards the mast and releases from the cam cleat.  The halyard is
stopped by a rope clutch on the cabintop.

IMHO, Lewmar makes the best rope clutches.

Stus-List Cleat covers

2016-12-17 Thread Chuck Saur via CnC-List
Good chat on both the jib fastening (I am ordering soft shackles and sheets
soon) and cleat covers...which brings up another dilemma with my rig: My
halyards run to stoppers on top of cabin, and my genoa (roller furled) is
seldom changed, and typically for a race.

I wonder if anyone has either installed a mast-located stopper or camcleat,
and line-receiver bag to get the halyard off the cabin top? This would
eliminate a "horned" cleat to foul, and be "convertible" to allow
re-rigging the halyard on cabin top for racing. If so, what mast (or deck)
mounted stopper might be used, and how have you configured it?

Apparently, the cold and snow has caused my brain to shift into
catalog/PayPal mode...

You’ve done it again Dennis,

Now you are going to have another thousand emails hashing out the suddle angle

political/ technical committee, and Cad drawings for Christmas list projects.
There will be reports of competitive varnishing, and with a new
naming/copyright/branding group, the intellectual property lawyers will try to
put their valley girls through college. Yea, probably even a photo contest and
yet another C meme.

I came in to late to know how that foredeck weather cow got it’s start, but
this time I’m documenting just who started this prototype version!
Probably want to switch to digest mode. . .

This sounds like a really good DIY project. Not much on the Web other than
the couple of products posted (I like the apsltd cleat cover best). So
here's one idea.

The goal is to make something that lifts a line over the cleat keeping it
from going under the horn(s). So a vertical sided thingie won't really
work. What is needed is an angle, like the apsltd cover.

Here's an idea. Measure the cleat and make two trapezoids from wood or
StarBoard. Place one on either side of the cleat. They could be held in
place with some bungee through holes or machine screws with cap nuts. From
the side they would look like this:

You could use a router to round all the edges.

APS has some that might work:

Or maybe with the strong dollar they are less $ if sourced from the UK:

Subject: Stus-List Cleat covers

Has anyone had successful experience using these on a 70s vintage C?

http://www.solvingideas.com/Cleat_Info.html

The recent discussion about attaching sheets ( and getting them hung up on
the baby stay) reminded me about the times my sheets have gotten snagged by
the cleats on the cabin top near the mast. So I thought I would give myself
a set of cleat covers for Christmas.

But the cleats on Imzadi (original 8" cleats) look suspiciously like the
ones shown that are not compatible with the covers.

Stus-List Cleat "covers"

2016-11-13 Thread Charlie Nelson via CnC-List
I have mid-ship cleats that need to be prevented from catching any lines while
club racing.

The boat originally had stainless steel cleat covers that lay flat on the deck
when the cleat was in use and then could be 'raised' to a vertical position
during racing to prevent line from catching on the cleat. These had an integral
'pin' that kept them upright by being captured in a small depression on the top
of the cleat.

They were held on the deck by SS straps that were bolted into the deck.

Over the years their bolt holes and the covers themselves have kind of worn
out.

I am looking for a simple equivalent that could be placed over the cleat when
needed and removed when I need the cleat for docking--the cleat is fine so I do
not need to buy another that can be raised and lowered--I know of this design
but not its name.

Any suggestions from the list?
