Hi Bill

When we are switching from Race to cruise and vice versa I always have to
remove the feeder to raise or lower the collar. Is a major PITA for just the
reason you describe. I ONLY do this at my slip where at least a diver could
locate the part should it go overboard. I also purchased a spare the day I saw
one at a local chandlery as I knew the part for mine is no longer made. I
think my furler may be older than yours.

For a 36 you probably have a Unit 1, possibly a Unit 1.5.

MKIII's have a black metal cover surrounding the drum, screws to hold the
extrusions together.

Did you call Harken directly? Excellent customer support from my
experience.

For Sale:

Mark 1 Unit 0 Harken furling gear.

Drum assembly, integral turnbuckle, 7/16 diameter toggle, torque tube, halyard
swivel.

Approximately 37-1/2 feet total length, but the top 4-inches or so of the foil
is damaged. The foil is still assembled and the forestay is still installed but
the top portion of the forestay is damaged as well. Foil would have to be
trimmed back to a shorter length and new forestay installed. However, when it
was removed from the boat, there was some spare foil length under the bottom
collar.

The furler is date stamped 1993 but the rigger who installed my new unit deemed
this one to be in very good condition.

Located in Sidney, British Columbia ... 5-minute walk down the road to a local
marina, so easy to transport the furler to your boat.

Asking $400

When you remove it for shipping be aware Locktite was used when
assembling the foil sections. Use heat (propane or butane torch) until
it sizzles and then the set screws will come out.

Re: Stus-List Harken Furler Mark 1 Unit 0

2014-02-10 Thread Peter Fell
Success I think!

After a bit of a search I’ve found a new section of foil here locally in the
‘parts bin’ of a rigging shop (it’s actually new ... still in the plastic
wrap). The rigger has a 2nd piece as well that has been cut down. Now he says
he can’t be 100% sure it is a Mark 1 foil ... dimensions are correct and it is
a screw (not rollpin) unit (the Mark 1 Unit 0 were the only Unit 1’s that used
screws rather than rollpins) but if it is a Mark 2 foil, then the shape inside
would be slightly different ... this fellow says the differences in the early
Marks is small enough that the connector can be modified to suit without too
much difficulty. I’ll find out tomorrow exactly what it might cost me for
the part and also what the rigging shop will charge me to replace the forestay
and fix-up the foil / install a halyard restrainer. This fellow says typically
they make-up a new top-cap out of some plastic and he feels the old Mark 1 Unit
0 on my boat still has some good life left in it – in fact it seems this guy
prefers the older Harkens to the newer ones.

Another rigger has quoted me $950 to repair the existing furler (not including
replacement parts), replace the forestay and add a halyard restrainer (all with
the mast up) and about $2500 to replace with a new Mark IV Unit 0. (I can
probably cut about $250 off that by ordering the furler myself).

I’m quite leaning towards keeping the old unit. Mainly a cost thing at this
time – I’ve got enough other projects needing doing! ... if I can keep the old
one going for a couple more years I’ve been told the rest of my standing
rigging probably only has a couple year’s left in it so then would be the
opportunity to have the mast down and reassess the need to redo the furling.

I’m still interested in finding a user manual for the old Mark 1 furling unit,
if anyone has one they can scan and email or send to me so I can scan (and
return).

Hopefully I can get this sorted out in the next couple of weeks, so that I can
get measured-up for my new genoa!

Any further words of wisdom?

Thanks,

Peter,

It looks like there's a block for an external halyard being held out of the way
in the pic. I'd have a better idea if I'd climbed the rig myself but is it
possible that this block rubbed the damage on the extrusion? Although not to
the degree I see in your pic, Touche's masthead had a similar issue and result.

I'm sending you pics off list to illustrate.

Thanks guys ... all great info and suggestions.

I highly suspect (and so does the rigger that inspected the unit) that the
previous owner wrapped the halyard on one or more occasion ... I admit to doing
it once while alongside the 1st time I put the genoa up but the rigger
figured that was a pretty old damage to the foil. I suspect it’s been wearing
on / catching the forestay over time. My wire halyards don’t look too good
either the jib halyard has a definite cork screw to it – so I’ll be
replacing those as well.

If you are replacing the forestay, you can do this when you drop the unit
for that. I'm assuming you're replacing it with another swaged forestay or are
you using a Norseman or NavTec compression fitting? If a swaged eye, then you
will have to disassemble the furler completely. If you are going that way,
just upgrade to the MKIV.

and fix-up the foil / install a halyard restrainer.
I’m still interested in finding a user manual for the old Mark 1 furling unit,
if anyone has one they can scan and email or send to me so I can scan (and
return).
Hopefully I can get this sorted out in the next couple of weeks, so that I can
get measured-up for my new genoa!
Any further words of wisdom?

Peter,

I have a scanned manual for a Harken Unit #1 from May 1991 that a fellow

Thanks Bill

Interesting it uses screws ... but if the torque tube is tapered, not
straight, then it is a Mark 2.
I think there was some overlap in the models ... the code stamped on mine
indicates it was built in early 1993.

if you find a good source of these parts, I would be interested, as well. My
top cap is broken.

Unfortunately, I cannot share the manual, as my unit is 00.

btw. I found this on Sailing Anarchy
(http://forums.sailinganarchy.com/index.php?showtopic=61882):

Click here for Harken's Identifying Furlers page.

The series number (0-392) stamped on the top of the spool plus the non-tapered
torque tube are dead giveaways.

The list of available manuals and parts lists is here.

The MKIII is the oldest model for which a manual is available online.

None of the links works; however, they had a manual PDF there. I could not
download it, because I am not a member (I am waiting for confirmation).

Just wondering if anyone local has a manual and parts list for a Mark 1 Unit 0
furling unit that I could borrow and copy.

Looking for parts too. Mine is missing a chunk out of the top of the uppermost
foil + the top cap. So I?m looking for a foil piece, cap, possibly foil
connector, etc. I?ve got a partial copy of the parts list ? looks like might
have been a couple versions of this unit.

2014-01-19 Thread Sylvain Laplante

Hi,
If it is like the new MkIV it should ride on the wire ( about 5/16 from the
swage end ).

Looking at your pictures looks like it is a pretty old model, maybe a new MkIV
would be a good thing ( especially at the 1,200 price).
The new MkIV is essentially a do-it yourself kit, including everything (
shackles, pre-feeder, 3M 5200, syringe , 55 feet line etc ).
On my 27 MkIII I used a 7/16 toggle and will install a restrainer this year (
need a shim to sit well on the mast ).

I also replaced my forestay ( 7/16 ), following Harken recommendation.

Depending of which sails you currently have, le luff tape must be number 6 (
5mm ) , 6mm can fit with a lot of lubrikote :-)

Harken installation manual is top notch( plan to read it 2-3 times ).

A nice unit but expect ti use some power to furl a new sail completely ( so
only the sacrificial sunbrella is exposed to the sun). That may be because I
have 7oz FlexP genoa, quite stiff sail.

Last Mark 1 I worked on was basically
an upgrade to the newer extrusions to get rid of the roll pins.

As for
the top cap, is the top of the extrusion riding on the barrel of the swage eye
or on the wire?

Re: Stus-List Harken Furler Mark 1 Unit 0

2014-01-19 Thread Dennis C.
Peter,

What caused the damage to the top of the extrusion?  Hard to tell from the pic.
 Need to figure that out.

Yes, you can cut the extrusion off, but only if you have enough extra at the
bottom inside the torque tube to be able to slide the extrusion assembly upward
so it rides on the swage barrel again.

The MKIV unit would be a nice upgrade.  You could sell the old one on
Craigslist or eBay.  I typically get $300-400 for a used Harken furler on eBay.
The issue you'd have is the roll pins.  You can drive them out with a pin
punch.

You can make a top cap from a PVC pipe cap or similar thing.  You could use a
cap from a bottle, etc.  Any tough plastic cap would do.  I'd drill a hole the
size of the swage barrel and split the cap.  Loosen the allen screws in the
torque tube, slide the extrusion down, spread the split to slide it over the
wire, wrap the cap with tape and slide it up over the swage barrel.  I've
replaced top caps this way except the units were new enough we could get the
Harken cap for them.  The one on Touche' is this way.  I have to re-tape it
every couple of years.

The other option you could try is to make a top cap similar to the new MKIV
trim caps.  The new trim caps slide into the extrusion.  It's Harken #HFG679.
Go here:
http://www.harken.com/uploadedfiles/Product_Support/PDF/4416-Parts-List.pdf

Scroll down to the top of Page 2.  If you could make one or shave down one of
the Harken ones, you could cut the top of your existing extrusion and insert a
new trim cap so the extrusion with new trim cap rides on the wire.  Would
require a bit of work but might be a good solution.

You can cut the extrusion with a Dremel.  Just be very careful not to nick the
wire.

If you are replacing the forestay, you can do this when you drop the unit for
that.  I'm assuming you're replacing it with another swaged forestay or are you
using a Norseman or NavTec compression fitting?  If a swaged eye, then you will
have to disassemble the furler completely.  If you are going that way, just
upgrade to the MKIV.

Hi Jim,

In order for the wire to unlay like that it will need to grow
shorter, pin-to-pin, a slight amount.

My forestay looked similar to that when I replaced the gang 5 years

Re: Stus-List Harken Furler Mark 1 Unit 0

2014-01-19 Thread Peter Fell
Thanks guys ... all great info and suggestions.

I highly suspect (and so does the rigger that inspected the unit) that the
previous owner wrapped the halyard on one or more occasion ... I admit to doing
it once while alongside the 1st time I put the genoa up but the rigger
figured that was a pretty old damage to the foil. I suspect it’s been wearing
on / catching the forestay over time. My wire halyards don’t look too good
either the jib halyard has a definite cork screw to it – so I’ll be
replacing those as well.

Russ, I think the wire is just coming unlaid. Looks like it may have been
twisted against the lay somehow.

I'd still replace it.

Stus-List Harken Furler Mark 1 Unit 0

2014-01-18 Thread Peter Fell
Just wondering if anyone local has a manual and parts list for a Mark 1 Unit 0
furling unit that I could borrow and copy.

Looking for parts too. Mine is missing a chunk out of the top of the uppermost
foil + the top cap. So I’m looking for a foil piece, cap, possibly foil
connector, etc. I’ve got a partial copy of the parts list – looks like might
have been a couple versions of this unit.

No, aluminum foil. The Mark 1 was the one with the dreaded rollpins for the
foils but only on the Unit 1 and above - the Unit 0 had screws.

a Mark 1 in a long while.

Last Mark 1 I worked on was basically an upgrade to the newer extrusions to get
rid of the roll pins.

As for the top cap, is the top of the extrusion riding on the barrel of the
swage eye or on the wire?

Thanks Dennis

Rides on the barrel of the swage.

I wonder if I can trim this down? I didn’t think by looking at the info
available online that it should ride on the forestay.

I’m ordering a new genoa within the next two weeks so now’s the time to
fix this.

Here are some pictures:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/707/1lxd.jpg

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/836/pll3.jpg

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800x600q90/571/fw5u.jpg

That forestay needs to be replaced and currently there is no halyard restrainer
either. Discussing those with a rigger right now. Of course I could just
replace the furler as well I’ve gotten some info on new ones. I can get a
Mark IV Unit 0 for under $1200. Toggle and restrainer and forestay would be
additional to that. Or a Furlex for about $1600 that includes the restrainer
and forestay.

foil + the top cap. So I’m looking for a foil piece, cap, possibly foil
connector, etc. I’ve got a partial copy of the parts list – looks like might
have been a couple versions of this unit.

installation instructions as a guide on how to disassemble for a look. Well,
it seems I can get the drum disconnected and raised up the forestay without
disconnecting the forestay but if I want to remove it for a clean I will
have to disconnect and use a halyard for backup. I've done this with the
shrouds but there are two of those! I have two headsail halyards so I'm
thinking to use both, attached to either the stem fitting or the toe rail

rest of the rig when I do this?

 Any tips or warnings?

It's more dependent on wire size and pin size than boat length.? Need to
verify those dimensions.? You'll also need a new forestay.

I suggest you verify the Mark version and download the installation
instructions.

Is worth a lot more than $500 if all parts in place and in like new
condition. I sold a 10 year old Harken 00 for $750 last year and the
furler for a 38 ft masthead boat is considerably more furler than that.
Do your friend a favour and sell it for $1000 since it costs a lot more

The talk about Ultrafurl and Harken furlers on the list reminded me of
something I'd been asked to do:

A friend of mine had a Catalina 38 with an old Hood furler for which
parts
were no longer available. He bought himself a Harken furler (model
unknown)
with 50+ feet of luff extrusion to install on his boat, and then the
boat
was totaled in Hurricane Irene a couple of years ago.

He still has the furler in the overhead of his garage, and asked if I
know
anyone who might want to buy the furler. I believe he only wants $400 or
$500 for it. The extrusions are in 6 foot sections, so the furler should
be
shippable by UPS at a fairly reasonable cost.

If anyone is interested in talking to my friend, please let me know off
list
and I will put you in contact with each other.

Re: Stus-List Harken furler for sale cheap

2013-07-16 Thread Rick Brass
My guess is that a 30 uses a smaller diameter headstay than a 38 - but then
my CC 25 uses a larger diameter wire for headstay and shrouds than a
friends Hunter 33, so your guess is as good as mine. If your wire is smaller
than the diameter for which the existing bearing strips are intended, you
should buy new bearing strips.

The furler may be a little heavier duty that what Harken currently
recommends for a 30 ft boat, but it should work fine.

You would obviously not need to use all 50+ ft of the available luff
extrusions.
