Stus-List Marinco Nicro Day/Night Solar Vent motor replacement

2022-09-16 Thread Robert Abbott via CnC-List
My Nicro Solar Vent on the front hatch came with the boat when I bought
it 16 years ago (2006)it still works fine...no idea actually how old
it is...I replaced the rechargeable battery maybe 6 years agoit
doesn't look as pretty as yours...mine has a white plastic frame.
Sooner or later the sun will deteriorate the frame but I will wait until
that happens .

However, I don't replace them anymore.  If replacing the battery
doesn't work, it's usually the motor.  I keep a spare with a
replacement motor.  When one fails, I just swap the vents and replace
the motor in the dead one to keep as the spare.

Anyway, the motor is under $10.  I just bought a two pack of them on
Amazon for $9.  Search for RF-500TB DC hobby motor.  The voltage may
vary from 3-10 VDC.  The listed RPM can run up to 6000 but with the
blade on, it's much less.  Its approximate dimensions are 32 mm (1.2
in) diameter x 19-20 mm (0.76 in) tall.

If you're handy with a soldering iron/gun, it's about a 20-30 minute
job to replace the motor.  The trick is to pull the entire assembly
out of the housing.  Makes soldering a lot easier. Here's a step by
step procedure.

 1. Remove the three mounting screws and save the o-rings (Important!)
 2. Remove the rubber cover on the switch and then the switch
retaining ring
 3. Remove the fan blade
 4. Remove the solar panel assembly.  There are pry slots opposite
each other on the periphery
 5. Remove the tiny screw beside the switch that holds in the motor
assembly
 6. Note the color of wires to the battery contacts.  It would be
smart to mark white and black on the housing by the +/- marks
 7. Using needle nose pliers, pull up and remove the battery contacts.
 8. Remove the battery contact/switch/motor assembly
 9. Note the wiring and maybe draw a diagram for reference
10. Unsolder the motor wires and solder in the new motor
11. Put a couple wraps of duct tape around the body of the motor to
keep it firmly in place.  The motor is a bit small.
12. Reassemble in reverse order

For reference, it's the Marinco Nicro model like this:

Stus-List Marinco solar vent motor

2019-08-12 Thread Francois Rivard via CnC-List
Hi Dennis,

I replaced mine about 4 years ago, it's still running 24/7 * 12 months a
year.

I also replaced the NiMH battery at the same time, I used an Eneloop "C"
size, don't think those are still available. They sell a "C" adapter for
their AA battery or you can just buy a regular NiMH "C" or sub "C" cell

At the time, I looked everywhere for higher quality motor but couldn't find
it, so I bought a $2.00 motor.

I believe this is what I used:
https://www.homesciencetools.com/product/motor-electric-dc-0-5-6-volt/

I had to do some minor mods to it: If I remember right I wrapped a couple
layers of tape around it to insure a tight fit in the housing as the
diameter is slightly smaller than the Marinco original motor and I also
used small zip ties to help secure the original impeller to the shaft.
Beyond that, it's a simple matter of soldering the small capacitor and
leads as per the original.

I can check for you / take pictures when I go to my boat which should be
tomorrow or Wednesday.

Vendors for these small motors aren’t forthcoming with specs and dimensions.

I also installed a smartplug on my 37/40+. The screws matched, but I had to use

Absolutely well worth it. A much better connection at the boat.

All,

I also converted to the SmartPlug and kicking myself for not doing it sooner.
Easy, solid connection.

Warning: if you have a 37+ or XL (probably 34+ or XL as well), the SmartPlug
will not mount in the same location as your existing shore power inlet. You’ll
have to drill new holes. Still totally worth it.

A better arrangement is a Smart Plug and inlet. The cable snaps in without any
threads. The contacts are larger, and when it's not plugged in, the cover
snaps down into place. You can buy the \whole assembly complete with cord, or
you can use your Marinco cord and add the fittings yourself. That's what I did
when I found charred contacts on the Marinco inlet.

I also made adapters to cover all possible arrangements - 15, 20, and 30 amps.
I haven't made a 50 amp adapter, but that comes next.

The complete assembly is about $55. Or you can buy just the stainless

for the cover a lot - you put the cover in place and turn it about 60
degrees to engage two bosses into the threaded parts, rather than having to
thread the cover on as you do with the old style inlet on my boat.

I'm sure you can find the item less expensively on Amazon or EBay.

I have been in 3 marinas in the last month that had only 50 amp power on the
docks, and had tto borrow or rent a 50 amp male to 30 amp female pigtail to

Subject: Stus-List Marinco shore power inlet

I broke the threaded boss in the shore power inlet the other day on Pulse,

ordered a new one from amazon, and an ez lock collar for the cord. Looks

like it's all going to fit, more or less, however when I took the inlet

apart, 2 of the rear enclosure mounting corners are broken off (plastic) and

the gaskets are done. Does anyone know of a source for parts for Marinco

fittings? 30a 110v stainless. Don't really want to buy a new one this year.

Thanks

All the best,

All.

I installed a smart plug on Honey and adapted all of my spare power cords
and adapters to the smart plug configuration. This was money well spent, no
more burnt shore plugs. I only wish that I had made this conversion a
couple of years ago.

I purchased mine from Defender since they had the best price at the time.

A better arrangement is a Smart Plug and inlet. The cable snaps in without
any threads. The contacts are larger, and when it's not plugged in, the

I just bought one last month for a boat I was delivering, at West Marine.
The complete assembly is about $55. Or you can buy just the stainless
mounting parts and cover for about $45, and the electrical part at about $40
as separate items. On the new stainless assembly, I liked the new attachment
for the cover a lot - you put the cover in place and turn it about 60
degrees to engage two bosses into the threaded parts, rather than having to
thread the cover on as you do with the old style inlet on my boat.

I'm sure you can find the item less expensively on Amazon or EBay.

I have been in 3 marinas in the last month that had only 50 amp power on the
docks, and had tto borrow or rent a 50 amp male to 30 amp female pigtail to
plug in my boat. I decided to buy one and found Marinco is right proud of
them - pushing $150. I found a new one on line for $79.

like it's all going to fit, more or less, however when I took the inlet
apart, 2 of the rear enclosure mounting corners are broken off (plastic) and
the gaskets are done. Does anyone know of a source for parts for Marinco
fittings? 30a 110v stainless. Don't really want to buy a new one this year.
Thanks

Stus-List marinco 6079 installation

2018-01-29 Thread Alex Giannelia via CnC-List
Lee,

Thanks for all those good notes. I now understand it really isn't necessary if
the plywood provides enough support for the 4 screws holding the ears of the
duplex outlet and I can pretty well do it as I want.

Thanks again,

Graham,

Tried it, and it is tricky to get the fold just right and unlike drywall mud,
you can't simply parge it over. But thanks the same.

I am re-wiring my boat and bought some Marinco plastic outlet boxes (P/N 6079)
that were delivered with a metal guard that screws into the base and has
flanges that are too long to come out flush. Are these necessary and how do
you install so you can get maximum benefit and are able to install the face
cover?

Hi Alex

Those are to make it easier to install in an existing structure - you can get
the same thing for use in renovating a house. The metal piece on the back is
intended to hold it into a hole. If you make a cutout the size of the box you
can fit it in, the flanges on the front stop it from falling into the "wall"
and the piece on the back is to tightened against the inside surface you've
installed it in. A face plate will fit over the flanges no problem.

Listers,

Anyone know of a good company in the Northeast USA that can repair an old
Octopus hydraulic pump? I?d rather not ship it to Canada.

All the best,

Re: Stus-List marinco 6079 installation

2018-01-28 Thread Lee Youngblood via CnC-List
Hi Alex,

We used a lot of those “remodel boxes” when I worked as an electrian. They
will rust up good on you, and were designed for drywall. If your wall is to
thick to use the back flange, just use metal shears, and cut them down. Not
actually an easy job, a dremel cutter wheel might work easier, but make
sparks-careful.
A cheap blue plastic box from Home Depot might work better, it’s usually bigger
indside too, and you can screw it into the wood you have, or add a scrap to
screw into. You would be surprised how much stuff needs to be modified to
work. Don’t get me started on plaster and lath walls.

Good luck, Lee

I watched a boat leave the dock with the power still connected. I am impressed
at how well that locking collar worked. It was the metal one into the metal
version
of the inlet. Once they got some slack it even undid and they could toss the
line
back to someone on shore.

I have seen and replaced several deteriorated updated Marino inlets. I
like the Smart Plug. Appears to be a superior product. Would probably
replace Touche's Marinco if it got flakey.

Having said that, a few preventative steps can make your existing setup
safer. I wrap my shore power cord around a winch before plugging it in.
That prevents any side forces on the plug. I also screw the locking collar
tight to ensure a tight connection.

Look at your inlet configuration. If the cord is not supported and is
hanging or otherwise placing side force on the inlet, devise a way to
  support it.
