[cobirds] Re: Baltimore Oriole and Others/Weld

Hi all

Photos up (URL below) ... note on the Baltimore Oriole it was paired with a
female oriole (did not get good look), so if breeding most likely at Weld
CR 94/37 gravel pit or Antelope Reservoir.

Hi all

To continue yesterday's colorful Nunn yard fallout ... by far the most
colorful day in yard since we moved up here in 2002. Usually we get
grassland sparrows fallout so this was a real treat to see for 35 acres of
CRP (grassland) with12,000 sq ft landscaped yard.

 - Lazuli Bunting (3, 2 male, 1 female)-came in together
 - Bullock's Oriole (6, 5 male, 1 female)
 - Black-headed Grosbeak (1 male)
 - American Goldfinch (8 male)

[cobirds] Crom Lake Poppin'/Weld

2020-05-08 Thread 'The "Nunn Guy"' via Colorado Birds
Hi all

Just returned from Crom Lake [Pierce] ... loads of shorebirds:

 - Long-billed Dowitcher - 6
 - Marbled Godwit - 4

 - Least Sandpiper - 2
 - Spotted Sandpiper - 1
 - American Avocet - 8

Probably the best place would be Weld CR 100 about a mile west of Keota and
CR 390 is large prairie dog colony on south. The plovers this year seem to
favor the far southeast corner of the colony.

[cobirds] Chestnut-collared Longspur/Weld

My telework lunch outing to Weld CR 45/114 had me find 2 Chestnut-collared
Longspur (northeast corner of 114) and 6 McCown's Longspur (southwest and
east corner of 114). Great hike today in cold temps, sun and mild breeze. A
few Sandhill Crane flew way up overhead, too.

2020-03-31 Thread 'The "Nunn Guy"' via Colorado Birds
Hi all

Quite a few responses for this ID challenge. ID is Cooper's Hawk for these
various reasons in addition to what Caleb provided:

 - Eye further forward towards the beak on the head/profile, vs. in the
 middle on a Sharp-shinned Hawk
 - Eye overall smaller than the beak, vs. the same size as the beak of a
 Sharp-shinned Hawk
 - Cooper’s (long tail in respect to the body) — maybe a male
 - Long tail with much shorter outer tail feathers

[cobirds] Raptor Alley Trip Results and Other/Weld

2020-01-21 Thread 'The "Nunn Guy"' via Colorado Birds
Hi all

Fantastic weather. Great people. And a fabulous "raptor show" for all.
Saturday, I led a large group on the "frozen tundra" of Nunn. We saw 52
raptors and our only miss was Northern Harrier. There were moments of pure
wonder as we watched pairs of Merlin (rare to see, roosting next to each
other), Golden Eagle (atop steel power lines), and multiple pairs of Bald
Eagle (various towers/poles). Photos later this morning. Raptors seen:

 - Red-tailed Hawk - 14
 - Golden Eagle - 5
 - Ferruginous Hawk - 6
 - Prairie Falcon - 3
 - Bald Eagle - 11 (record #)
 - Merlin - 2
 - American Kestrel - 10
 - Rough-legged Hawk - 1

Sunday and Monday ... Windsor and Woods Lake continue to teem with birds.
Windsor had the Long-tailed Duck (Sun.) and Greater White-fronted Goose
(Mon.) while Woods Lake had Snow Goose (Mon.)

[cobirds] Nunn CBC Results and Rescheduling Pawnee NG-East CBC/Weld

2019-12-27 Thread 'The "Nunn Guy"' via Colorado Birds
Hi all

First, *rescheduling this Saturday's Pawnee National Grassland-East CBC*
because of upcoming snowstorm, New Raymer-area is looking at 3-6 inches and
blizzard-like winds. We will conduct the *Pawnee National Grassland-East
CBC Thursday, January 2nd*, meet 0830 at the cafe in New Raymer (south side
of Hwy 14).

The Nunn CBC had a large turnout of people, and the greatest weather EVER!
... unfortunately birds were historically low in numbers with species close
to normal.

Highlights were:

 - We found two Rough-legged Hawk ;-)
 - Common Raven - 28 (record!) most found at a cow carcass, competing
 with a Golden Eagle
 - Lapland Longspur - 6
 - Ring-necked Pheasant - 1 (rare for this count)
 - Beating the averages: Bald Eagle, Red-tailed Hawk, Rock Pigeon,
Eurasian-collared Dove, Northern Flicker, American Kestrel, Black-billed
Magpie, American Crow, European Starling, Dark-eyed Junco, and Western
 Meadowlark

I went out for a few hours poking around the Nunn CBC circle, hightlights
being two Gray-crowned Rosy Finches along Weld CR 108 roadside and multiple
Lapland Longspurs in various locations. Hopefully, the rosies stick around,
this being second sighting of species in less than a month (other was in

We are going to be hard pressed to find a Rough-legged Hawk :-( I've only
seen one this fall/winter and that was more than a month ago now.

[cobirds] Lapland Longspur and Huge Goose Flock (Continues)/Weld

2019-11-25 Thread 'The "Nunn Guy"' via Colorado Birds
Hi all

Raptor Alley drive yielded the following on Sunday. Photos here,
http://www.friendsofthepawneegrassland.org/profile/admin, first two posts.

 - Rough-legged Hawk - 1
 - Red-tailed Hawk - 6
 - Prairie Falcon - 2
 - Northern Harrier - 1
 - American Kestrel - 7
 - Golden Eagle - 1
 - Ferruginous Hawk - 2
 - Bald Eagle - 1
 - Lapland Longspur - 4-6 (between Weld CR 55/57 along 124)

The huge five-goose flock continues at Neff Lake. Thousands of
Canada/Cackling, probably close to four-digit Snows with some Ross's and
three Greater White-fronted. Flock has been here last two weekends I
suspect they know they won't get shot at Neff Lake. :-)

[cobirds] Re: First of the Season Raptor Alley Trip

2019-10-21 Thread 'The "Nunn Guy"' via Colorado Birds
Hi all

Results from first Raptor Alley tour of season. Morning session was perfect
weather and first bird out of the gate was a Merlin down the road from my
house. She was later seen after the the trip chowing on a meadowlark in our
field atop a post. We had 33 raptors in all and about 20 other bird
species, Pronghorns, of course. A treat for all was Northern Harrier,
Red-tailed and Ferruginous Hawk hunting and eating in the Weld CR 33
prairie dog colony at same time. Wind picked up in afternoon drive. We did
not drive up to Weld CR 124 missing out on the three possible Prairie
Falcon seen of late up there.

American Kestrel - 11
Red-tailed Hawk 17
Merlin - 1
Ferruginous Hawk - 2
Northern Harrier - 1
Golden Eagle - 1

Nunn's Bald Eagle(s) could not be found in their usual 4-5 hangouts. Could
not re-find the Rough-legged Hawk either seen last weekend.

On Saturday, I visited Elkhorn Creek Trailhead on Lady Moon trail, south of
Red Feather Lakes Road. I saw/heard 24+ Red Crossbills, some Red-breasted
and Pygmy Nuthatches and loads of Mountain Chickadees.

At Crow Valley Campground today, I saw 26 species that included: Winter
Wren in trees north of host camper, Brown Thrasher, Rock Wren, Gray
Catbird, Swainson's Thrush and Ruby-crowned Kinglet. Also, four warblers.

Thanks!

[cobirds] County Road 124 Pond Update [Weld]

2019-09-30 Thread 'The "Nunn Guy"' via Colorado Birds
Hi all

The Weld CR 124 pond is drawing down and offers nice shorebird habitat--and
birds! Did not walk into Weld CR 122 (.5m west of Weld CR 75/122) but
suspect same conditions there. Weld CR 116 playa is full of water, no
shoreline and two shovelers.

 - Wilson's Snipe - 7
 - Long-billed Dowitcher - 15
 - Greater Yellowlegs - 6+
 - Least Sandpiper - 2
 - Loads of ducks, some geese

I did most of travel on county roads north of Pawnee Buttes to WY border
...

 - Ferruginous Hawk - 3
 - Swainson's Hawk - 6
 - Red-tailed Hawk - 2
 - Prairie Falcon - 3
 - Tons of Vesper Sparrow, meadowlarks and horned larks
 - Some Lark, White-crowned, and Chipping Sparrow
 - Other interesting bird was Yellow-headed Blackbird - 2 hanging out
with flock of Red-wingeds in the "middle of nowhere"

Other odd novelties were a small, looks to be a working, Zion Church on
Weld CRs 124/111 in the "middle of nowhere" with houses/ranches not to be
found in vicinity. Also, nearby was a four-story what looked to be a fire
lookout perched in middle of prairie.

Beautiful drive ...

[cobirds] Mississippi Kite and Eastern Bluebird [Logan]

2019-05-28 Thread 'The "Nunn Guy"' via Colorado Birds
Hi all

On our way back from Nebraska trip (Sunday) saw and heard a Mississippi
Kite flying above Pioneer Park and while hiking the trails came across
Eastern Bluebird pair building a nest in a stump on trail that traverses
the north side of the park. First three posts here for bird photos (Sun.
and Mon.) here and elsewhere:

In Nebraska found this yellow, male singing oriole (Orchard, other??) any
ID help appreciated! Looks like first-year something ... ;-)
