[cobirds] Bohemian Waxwings- They're Back!

2023-12-08 Thread Noah Brinkman
On my way to scope some waterfowl at Stagecoach Reservoir (Routt Co.) this
morning, I encountered a single waxwing that flew across the road as I
drove by. I found a safe place to park and discovered a large flock of
mixed waxwings with ~75 individuals. It was pretty evenly distributed, with
an estimated 40 Bohemians and 35 Cedars. According to eBird data, this is
one of only two BOWA observations this season in Colorado. I was able to
spend some time with this flock and watched as they flew back and forth
between a few Hawthornes and Aspen. It was a veritable frenzy as these
birds gorged themselves on Hawthorne berries. This was easily my favorite
avian encounter in months!

eBird checklist with photos: https://ebird.org/checklist/S155969982

Perhaps this flock is an indication of the winter to come. Last year while
the Front Range was enjoying the irruption of BOWA, Routt experienced a
"drought". I am only aware of one flock that was seen in Routt, in early
March. In a typical year, I will see them around three or four times
(almost always in massive flocks). Maybe my observation today is an
indication of a more normal year for waxwings? Of course, this is pure
speculation and only time will tell...

Happy Birding!

They are in trees in my area and even on the sidewalks on Lois Way this
morning according to one birder who is driving around the area looking at
them.

There are at least 150, probably more.

When it started raining harder, they disappeared into some junipers. Now
that the rain is lighter, they in most of the trees that I can see

Listen for their soft calls.

At least 200 Bohemian Waxwings were sitting in the top of a neighbor’s
cottonwood tree until 5 minutes ago. I heard them as I went out to get my

I live near the Police Station.

This may be as an underestimate!

They flew low north towards Via Appia and Tyler Streets.

Bohemian Waxwings, NW of Deckers, near Wellington Lake

While exploring a new trail, Rolling Creek, about a mile from trailhead,
strayed from the trail about 100 yards to get a better pic of the Castle
formation and slopped into a large flock of Bohemian Waxwings, first heard
the vocal flock of at least 50 in a Ponderosa Pine, could have been a lot
more with all the calling in surrounding trees, maybe 100. Nice bonus as
it's been I think a couple decades since I have observed this species.

[cobirds] Bohemian Waxwings - Arapahoe

A Bohemian Waxwing flock of at least 50 birds has spent at least the past
90 minutes in my neighborhood in Centennial (Arapahoe), just north of
Arapahoe Rd and University Ave. I first heard the birds vocalizing around
3:00 PM from a cottonwood at the edge of my neighbors' yard, visible from
my yard. They flew off, but appear to have just moved a yard or two over,

[cobirds] Bohemian Waxwings, Louisville, Boulder County

2023-01-27 Thread Gary & Sharon
Around 3:30 PM today I was at the mailbox and noticed a large flock of birds
fly over. They were the right size for Waxwings. So I rushed back to the house
and told my husband that we needed to take a drive in the neighborhood to the
north of our house (the heck with the groceries we had just taken into the
house but hadn’t put away). In just a few minutes we found about 100 Bohemian
Waxwings in a couple of tall cottonwood trees. They were in the area of
Centennial Drive and Evans Circle. Anyway, we were very happy to finally have
them fly over our house while I was out getting mail (having driven all around
Louisville for an hour on Tuesday looking for them to no avail). Also I new
yard bird. I count fly overs.

[cobirds] Bohemian Waxwings - Denver Wellshire Golf Course

2023-01-17 Thread Gregg Goodrich
We tried for the Bohemian Waxings this morning but no luck at the Mamie
Eisenhower Park. Then driving by the Wellshire Golf Course we noticed a
large flock on the SW side of the course from Hampden. We parked on the NW
side of the course in the residential area. This flock is likely the same
one from just east of the Mamie Eisenhower Park.

I got a photo of the flock in flight. Printed the photo. Blocked it into 70
blocks. Counted the birds in each block. 823! My photo of my block count is
on the list. I looked at a lot of the birds in the trees before they flew
and could find only one Cedar Waxwing.

My first thought was 400-500. But wanted to find out exactly how many. Was
way to conservative on my initial estimate. Wonder if all these waxwings
will stick with this storm coming in.

Here is my list. No photographer photos, but group photos in trees, on the
snow and in flight.

[cobirds] Bohemian Waxwings - West Arapahoe

2023-01-15 Thread Jared Del Rosso
This morning, there were at least two large flocks of Bohemian Waxwings in
west Arapahoe County. Birders along the Big Dry Creek in Centennial
reported one, of about 200, moving along the Creek and landscaping trees in
the area.

I had the good luck to encounter another, along the High Line Canal Trail
in Cherry Hills village. The flock (of roughly 100) was north of Colorado
and Three Ponds Park, feeding on Buckthorn with Robins, a few Cedar
Waxwings, and others. I watched them for roughly fifteen minutes before
they flew off as a single flock, roughly in the direction of Kent Denver
School (but who knows).

For those interested, I posted some photos and a write up about the
waxwings along the canal on my blog

[cobirds] Bohemian waxwings, Jefferson county

2023-01-14 Thread 'Deborah Carstensen' via Colorado Birds
There were several Bohemian waxwings, mixed in with cedar waxwings, hanging
out at the top of tall cotton woods in the wheat Ridge Greenbelt area. I
recognize them by their grayIsh abdomen, rusty under-tail coverts, and trill
like high-pitched call.

If you go to the main entrance, park in the main parking area and cross the
bridge that is right near the parking area, then go down a side trail to a
chain-link fence. There are a lot of robins there, eating small, blackish
berries. The wax wings tended to hang out at the top of the trees nearby, often
displaying fly catching behavior. .
WHEW! I was afraid I would end up missing them during their stay here.

[cobirds] Bohemian waxwings in or near Gold Hill

2023-01-14 Thread Elena Holly Klaver
A friend sent me a video today of a smallish flock of about 8 Bohemian waxwings
in or near Gold Hill, at about 8,500'. I couldn’t actually see from the video
to distinguish them from cedars, but the audio was very clear, and clearly
Bohemians. Having just had a large (81) flock of them on the Loveland CBC, the
sound was fresh in my mind. Nice to see them in Gold Hill, it makes one wonder
if this is part of the same flock moving around, or if there are just a lot
more this year scattered in many places.

[cobirds] Bohemian Waxwings - Arapahoe

2023-01-04 Thread Jared Del Rosso
On January 1, a sharp-eyed participant in the urban Denver CBC spotted a
Bohemian Waxwing amid a large flock of Cedars along the High Line Canal in
Cherry Hills Village in Arapahoe County. (Apologies to that person -- I
don't have a list of participants and so can't credit them.) This allowed
all 15 of us participating in the count to get looks at the bird, a lifer
for many on the trip.

I returned to the Canal in Cherry Hills Village today on a walking break.
There are many, many waxwings feeding on buckthorn (and, no doubt, helping
reseed it). I encountered a Bohemian among them, south of Quincy Ave, along
the Canal near Blackmer Hall of Kent Denver School.

I had only brief views of the Bohemian, before losing it among the brush
and Cedars. Not only are waxwing moving along the canal, from spot to spot,
they're also incredibly active wherever they stop. They work the ground
(for water) to the canopy of cottonwoods (for sun and melting snow, it
seems). So birders who hope to find the Bohemian would be well-served
bringing either several other birders with them, the better to check all
the waxwings, or packing all the patience and, better yet, dumb luck they
can find.

I enjoyed watching the Cedar Waxwings drinking from melting snow, off
cottonwood and pine branches. At one point, I saw one waxwing offer either
food (amid the pines -- insects?) or water (in the form of melting snow) to
another. It seems late for a parent to tend to young. It seems early for
one of a pair to tend to the other. I skimmed *Birds of the World*, but
didn't see anything about this sort of behavior in winter. (Admittedly, I
didn't read the entry exhaustively.) Has anyone else noticed this? No
pictures, as the birds were in the shadows of pines.

There is an incredible amount of buckthorn spread out along the Canal, but
there do seem to be fewer drupes on the plants than on January 1. The whole
portion of Canal -- from Colorado to the edge of Kent Denver -- is worth
investigating. (Cassin's Finches have also been found on this portion of
trail lately.) So too is the riparian line that emerges from the southern
edge of Blackmer Lake. In years past, starlings, waxwings, robins, and
sparrows (in impressive numbers) visited the buckthorn there.

At home, in Centennial, a White-throated Sparrow continues in my yard. An
American Tree Sparrow has also visited, along with two White-crowned
Sparrows, several Spotted Towhees, and many juncos.

[cobirds] Bohemian Waxwings continue - El Paso, County

2023-01-03 Thread Kip Miller
Bohemian Waxwings have been showing nicely and enjoyed by many the past two
days in Colorado Springs since their discovery by Steve Getty along South
Cheyenne Canyon Road near the Starsmore Discovery Center. At least 40 were
present this afternoon, along with a few Cedar Waxwings.

I watched them for over an hour late in late afternoon today and would
guess they'll stick around as long as the buckthorn berries they've been
feeding on remain present. (There were still many berries this afternoon.)

bushtit flock has been eating the berries in preference to suet.

I took the family snowshoeing up to Guanella Pass, from the road closure to the

Saw roughly 25 (give or take 5) Bohemian Waxwings late Sunday afternoon,
3/25, driving south toward the summit of Hoosier Pass. Perching at tops of
trees--not terribly close since the trees were very high. I believe there
are three major hairpins on Colorado 9 above where I saw the birds. Point
was plotted accurately on eBird.

[cobirds] Bohemian Waxwings in Gilpin County

2018-03-25 Thread William H Kaempfer
I was hoping for Tree Swallows near Rollinsville or an Osprey at the
traditional nest site at Los Lagos at the Boulder/Gilpin county line on CO 119.
That didn't happen, so maybe an early Fox Sparrow? I stopped at my favorite
FOSP spot in Gilpin just east of Tolland on the Rollins Pass Road. No sparrows
were around, but there was something perched at the very top of a fir on the
south side of the road-a gray, crested bird. Pulling out my scope confirmed
Bohemian Waxwing, and actually at least eight, each at the top of their own
tree.

They were silent, or inaudible to my ears, and the disappeared just like that.
But it was sure nice to see some-my first in several years.

[cobirds] Bohemian Waxwings, Simpson Ponds SWA, Larimer County

2013-03-29 Thread melgoff

Hi, Cobirders.

For what seems like the thousandth time we left home this morning to chase the
mythical Bohemian Waxwing. This time we headed north to Loveland and the
Simpson Ponds SWA.

After parking and speaking to two folks who just saw them before they flew
off we started walking up the highway toward the northeast corner of the
reserve. With high hopes and low expectations we trudged along spotting
hundreds of American Robins. Suddenly Jeanne says Oh, Mel, Mel, Mel, Mel,
Mel

There just in front of us at eye level in an olive tree sat an honest to
goodness BOWA. We were STUNNED. They really do exist! Over the course of the
next hour or so, large groups flew into the tall trees along the north border
of the SWA.

We even got to meet Connie Kogler who we first met when we saw the Streak
-backed Oriole at her house a few years ago. She has now been there for two of
our life birds. Maybe we should hire her as a guide.

Thanks to all who encouraged us to not give up the quest. It was long in
coming, but what a beautiful sight on a sunny morning.

[cobirds] Bohemian Waxwings, 400+, Simpson Ponds, Larimer NOTICE

2013-03-22 Thread Connie Kogler
Hi folks,

The Bohemians along with Cedar Waxwings are back in full force today. There are
400+ that split off in smaller flocks and come back to the north and east sides
of the north pond.

Please note!! This is a busy road, do NOT park along side of the road or on
private property, but park in the SWA parking lot. Several people have gone on
to the private property directly north of the SWA and parked and walked on
their property. DO NOT DO THIS or I won't be posting any more sightings to this
area. Some are also dangerously parking along side of the road - half into the
very busy roadway making travel unsafe.

If you do park illegally, and I am around I will take your plate number and
report you. Don't wanna be the bird parking cop, but I don't want to make the
neighbors mad either. Behave yourselves!

[cobirds] Bohemian Waxwings, Barrett Road, El Paso County

2013-03-10 Thread Debbie Barnes
I went out today in hopes that the bad weather would have the Bohemian
Waxwings would show up where they had been see before. We visited Cala
Roja, lots of American Robins, several Western Bluebirds, Western
Scrub-Jay, and Townsends Solitaires. Spring is in the air! The Robins
were singing up a storm despite the wind and blowing snow. Then we moved
down to Barrett Road about a 1/2 mile down the road in a dip where come
juniper trees are next to the road, we saw many American Robins, a few
Cedar Waxwings came in to eat Juniper Berries but were chased off by a
jealous Townsends Solitaire.
Later I saw a flock of about 40 Waxwings in the top of tree about 1000 feet
off the road. I took some pictures but dismissed them as Cedar Waxwings
with a Evening Grosbeak for company. After downloading my pictures this
evening I saw that I had Bohemian Waxwings! Happy life bird to me!

Re: [cobirds] Bohemian Waxwings Fremont Co. 3/7

2013-03-07 Thread Brandon K. Percival
The three Bohemian Waxwings didn't stick around very long, they flew off to the
west shortly after my cobirds post at 728am.  Hopefully when it gets warmer
today, the birds will come back and look fly catch for insects, like they were
doing yesterday.  Before I left the Holcim Wetlands this morning, I saw an
adult Northern Shrike, perhaps the last one I'll see until the fall.  Thanks
again to SeEtta Moss for reporting these waxwings, I think these are the first
ones we've had in the Pueblo Area this winter/early spring.  Of course, the
ones along Hwy 115, in southern El Paso County, aren't far from Fremont County,
so I'm guessing they might be also in this area of Fremont County too.

Yesterday, in the afternoon (3/6), I saw a Northern Goshawk flying around the
North Shore Marina area of Pueblo Reservoir.  Seems like March is good time to
see goshawks on the plains.

Good birding,

I am currently at. Holcim Wetlands.  I just saw three Bohemian Waxwings near
the arkansas river on north side of the Wetlands.  Thanks to SeEtta finding
them yesterday.  I also 6 cedar waxwings.

[cobirds] Bohemian Waxwings found again at Holcim Wetlands this afternoon

2013-03-07 Thread SeEtta Moss
I had a meeting tonight in Pueblo so left a little early and stopped by
Holcim Wetlands on the way to see if the Bohemian Waxwings might be back
sallying after aerial insects on this very warm afternoon (72 F). I did
not find any waxwings in the trees or shrubs along the Arkansas River where
I found them yesterday and only a couple of robins. I continued walking
the trail around the wetland pond until I found a number of robins just off
the trail west of the wetland pond. I could hear robins calling and likely
a Spotted Towhee but no waxwing calls but I searched each bird movement
until I spotted a waxwing then another then another. They were feeding,
and doing so quietly, in the Russian Olive trees along with the robins. I
finally located 2 Bohemian and 2 Cedar Waxwings eating Russian Olive fruit
about 50 feet off the trail. BTW, I forget to note that yesterday when I
found the flock of about 12 that were fly-catching they were not calling
then either.

[cobirds] Bohemian Waxwings - Gunbarrell, Boulder Co.

2013-03-03 Thread Luis (Beto) Matheus
I had almost given up after my last message, but one more drive through
Gunbarrell turned up at least 8 Bohemians along White Rock Cir., just east of
the tennis court.

The Bohemians , robins, house finches and chickadees were eating from a
crabapple sandwiched between the building to the east and the tennis court
fence. They'd fly up to the pines north of the street to rest.
Another hard worked Lifer!

[cobirds] Bohemian Waxwings, Lafayette

2013-03-02 Thread Jeff Romain
Hi all,

While I was out on a ride on the bicycle during this gorgeous day, I spotted
two Bohemian Waxwings near Waneka Lake, where High Country Dr. intersects with
Waneka Lake Dr. The pair seemed completely free of concern regarding my
presence, as I watched them for a solid fifteen minutes flycatching and
flitting from one ash tree to the next.

Cheers,

Went looking for the Waxwings yesterday with Rob King from Longmont, went
to Crane Hollow road with no luck so we went over to
Gunbarrell, the first office park off 63rd and Longbow was a cottonwood

west on Longbow to the Juniper bush at the next driveway and they all flew
and starting eating, got real close-up views of all the field

[cobirds] Bohemian Waxwings Harris's Sparrows, Boulder County

2013-02-23 Thread Nathan Pieplow
About 85 Bohemian Waxwings were on the SW corner of Spine and Orchard Creek

told me there were up to 500 Bohemians in this neighborhood yesterday.

Also, the 5 Harris's Sparrows originally reported by Bryan Guarente
continue at the house along Crane Hollow Road southwest of Hygiene.

[cobirds] Bohemian Waxwings, Boulder

2013-02-18 Thread Nathan Pieplow
At 10:30 this morning a large flock of apparent Bohemian Waxwings (about
400 birds) flew over the road in front of my car. My looks were brief but
the lighting was excellent, and I was pretty sure of the ID, given the size
of the birds (large for waxwings) and their multicolored, dark-vented
look. The birds looked pretty uniform in coloration but I can't swear
there weren't some Cedars mixed in. They were headed north over
Independence Road right at Hayden Lake. This is just east of the
intersection of Foothills Parkway and the Diagonal Highway, and just
northwest of the airport. It's only a few blocks from where Brian Guarente
reported probable Bohemians the other day. It was also very close to the
Cottonwood Trailhead, so if you're interested in looking for these birds, I
suspect your best bet is to park at the trailhead and head north along the
Cottonwood Trail (map:

).

Best of luck,

[cobirds] Bohemian Waxwings and other sightings, Longmont, Boulder County

2013-02-14 Thread Todd Deininger
After Brian G alerted me to an ebird report yesterday, I headed to McIntosh
lake to have a look around. The intersection of Drake and Lakeshore had
trees full of American Robins and one lone Cedar Waxwing.

Driving south on Drake a flock of *Bohemian Waxwings *flew from the
direction of the lake and headed southeast through the neighborhood. This
was at 4:15.

Also, north of the lake a *Prairie Falcon *was perched on the tall power
pole.

I my yard, my lone *Mourning Dove* that has been hanging around all winter
has been joined by two others.

[cobirds] Bohemian Waxwings in Boulder, Boulder County

2013-02-13 Thread Bryan Guarente
At 1:10 this afternoon, I heard something while biking that sounded like Cedar
Waxwings, but it didn't sound right and I wasn't sure it was a bird at first
since I was right next to the highway and not on my usual bike.  Heard it again
at slower speed and stopped to find them.  A flock of 85 (or so) birds flew
over me making a lower, huskier, distinctly un-Cedar Waxwing call.  Shape of
the birds was good for waxwing.  Strongly triangular wings (isosceles right
triangle), shortish squared-off tail, very Saab Gripen-like, but with a shorter
nose and longer tail (and less afterburners).  Backlit during entire flight
path when I saw them.

Birds flew from east to west, from east of foothills parkway to west of the
railroad tracks into Howard Hueston Park.  Would look for the birds there or in
the neighborhood to the east of Foothills parkway if looking again.  There
isn't good habitat for waxwings here near my office, it was just happenstance
that I was under them as they flew by.

Here is the location that I saw the birds if you need more reference:

[cobirds] Bohemian waxwings - Fort Collins (LARIMER)

2013-02-11 Thread John Shenot
On my walk to work this morning at 8:15 I observed a large flock of
waxwings at Library Park in Old Town, probably 40-50, half flying over and
half perched high in a tree. Some if not all were BOWA based on call and
field marks on the only one close enough for me to see with naked eyes. Do
CEWA and BOWA mix?

the North Fork this morning. Open water is tough to find with this cold

This morning at 8:30am, I was returning from dropping my daughter off at
school. As I pulled into the driveway, I noticed two Waxwings at the top of my
neighbors tree. When I got out of the car, I heard the trilled call of Bohemian
Waxwings. I sprinted inside and grabbed the binoculars. When I got on the
birds, I immediately noticed the reddish undertail coverts and lighter colored
birds. While watching the birds, they flew east. I ran to the very birdy
backyard hoping they had stopped at the water feature. While searching, a
Sharppie flew in and ended the search as the birds scattered. I searched the
neighborhood crabapples but came up empty!

As I was leaving work this afternoon I had a flock of about a dozen Bohemian
Waxwings fly overhead basically heading southeast along Broadway toward

Snowy Owl, Gyrfalcon or Pileated Woodpecker). It is something else to stay

[cobirds] Bohemian Waxwings

2010-12-11 Thread AHilf
Several birders in the Steamboat Springs area have called/e-mailed to let
me know about large flocks of Bohemian Waxwings. Even up in Steamboat, its
not the norm to have such large numbers of Bohemians -- perhaps it will
also be a good year for them in the Denver-metropolitan area. I remember a
a few years ago we had a so called invasion of Bohemians in the region
and just wanted to alert birders to look carefully at flocks of waxwings
this winter -- especially during Christmas Bird Counts.
