[cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch, RMBO banding Wednesday
Hi COBirders, Today was the first official day for RMBO bird banding at CBR, El Paso Co side. Along with 80 4th graders, we got SLAMMED by an arrival of sparrows about 930. Over a 200 m front we probably had 75 birds in nets at the same time. With this influx we tallied about 125 birds caught today. The big flock was mostly composed of Chipping and Brewer's Sparrows. We don't recall having more than a handful of Brewer's Sparrows in a SEASON, and we probably had over 25 today. Other than that, we had several Wilson's, Yellow, Orange-crowned, and MacGillivray's Warblers, Swainson's Thrush, Ruby-crowned Kinglet, YB Chat, and several W Wood-Pewees. Operations are running six days/week, M-Sat, through October 5. [cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch RMBO banding 11 Sep 2010
Hi Cobirders Despite my dire predictions we had a great day here at Chico. There was a massive exodus (just one recapped bird from yesterday, a Wilson's Warbler) and a large arrival last night. We banded a couple Swainson's Thrushes (rare in fall). There were at least a couple Barn Owls still around. A couple Cooper's Hawks kept the birds on edge much of the morning. Here are the numbers. Birds Banded: Downy Woodpecker 1 Western Wood-Pewee 7 Hammond's Flycatcher 2 Dusky Flycatcher 1 Cordilleran Flycatcher 1 Red-breasted Nuthatch 1 House Wren 4 Swainson's Thrush 2 Hermit Thrush 5 American Robin 5 Gray Catbird 4 Brown Thrasher 4 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 MacGillivray's Warbler 1 Wilson's Warbler 59 Western Tanager 1 Green-tailed Towhee 1 Chipping Sparrow 1 Lazuli Bunting 1 Good Birding Brian Gibbons www.nikonbirding.com www.ventbird.com EXPOSED: Make $99/hr Online BREAKING NEWS: People are beating the recession by working at home. http://thirdpartyoffers.juno.com/TGL3141/4c8bfa353ad67b7fabast04vuc -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. Hi Cobirders We had a big arrival of numerous species last night. As is typical for this area, Wilson's Warblers predominated. Again the Barn Owls were about. We also had 2 Olive-sided Flycatchers right next to each other. The number of warblers flitting around in the trees was impressive. The weeds, bushes and trees were crowded. Birds Banded 140, of 21 species Western Wood-Pewee 4 Willow Flycatcher 1 Dusky Flycatcher 3 Cordilleran Flycatcher 5 Red-breasted Nuthatch 1 House Wren 13 Hermit Thrush 1 American Robin 6 Gray Catbird 1 Brown Thrasher 2 Orange-crowned Warbler 2 Yellow Warbler 1 Townsend's Warbler 2 American Redstart 1 MacGillivray's Warbler 3 Wilson's Warbler 83 Yellow-breasted Chat 1 Western Tanager 3 Green-tailed Towhee 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 4 Black-headed Grosbeak 2 A great day. As usual a large dropoff can be expected tomorrow, but a new arrival could happen too. Many of today's birds were devoid of fat so they might need to spend a couple days here. Hi Cobirders Birds continue to pour through Chico. We banded 84 birds of 21 species today and were done before noon. Around the station a singing male Tennessee Warbler was a nice find. Warblers were quite sparse otherwise. The big arrival today was Swainson's Thrush, 49 banded. This was the first day we noticed many Swainson's were second year birds, showing retained juv feathers. Saturday 22 May 2010 will be the LAST banding day for the spring. Hi Cobirders Another interesting day here on the ranch. 86 birds banded of 22 species. Another pulse of Swainson's Thrushes and Lincoln's Sparrows made up the bulk of arriving birds today. Warblers were quite sparse. Most interesting was a Mourning Warbler-like bird. It looked and sounded like a MOWA except that it had a thicker than expected eyering. I am used to seeing MOWAs in the fall with a nice thin eyering but this bird surprised me. [cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch RMBO banding 12 May 2010
Hi Folks Well it was a cold one here in the early morning, then the north wind abated the sun came out and it was beautiful for a couple hours. This evening the clouds are back with a cold north wind. Birds were abundant today, I saw about 100 species without trying. On the headquarters pond I saw lots of shorebirds. Killdeer 6, Semipalmated Plover, Black-bellied Plover, American Avocet 2, Willet 7, Lesser Yellowlegs 5, Stilt Sandpiper 1, Western Sandpiper 1, Least Sandpiper 4, Spotted Sandpiper 25, Long-billed Dowitcher 10, Wilson's Phalarope 20. Entertaining was a Great Blue trying for many minutes to eat a huge bullfrog. I think it got it down. Also on the pond were Hooded Merganser, American White Pelican and 6 Snowy Egrets. Around the banding station the continuing Broad-winged Hawk was keeping the robins on edge. Best bird there was a beautiful breeding plumaged Harris's Sparrow. White-throated Sparrow and White-crowned Sparrows made for a Zonotrichia hat-trick. Olive-sided Flycatcher and Lesser Goldfinch were at Holmes too. Birds Banded: Least Flycatcher 3 Dusky Flycatcher 1 Plumbeous Vireo 3 Cassin's Vireo 1 Red-breasted Nuthatch 1 House Wren 2 Ruby-crowned Kinglet 1 Swainson's Thrush 3 Hermit Thrush 3 Gray Catbird 1 Brown Thrasher 1 Yellow Warbler 15 Myrtle Warbler 6 Audubon's Warbler 20 Black-throated Gray Warbler 1 Northern Waterthrush 1 Common Yellowthroat 7 Wilson's Warbler 2 Yellow-breasted Chat 4 Western Tanager 1 Spotted Towhee 1 Lark Sparrow 4 Lincoln's Sparrow 18 White-throated Sparrow 1 Gambell's White-crowned-Sparrow 2 Mtn White-crowned Sparrow 1 Black-headed Grosbeak 2 Lazuli Bunting 2 Common Grackle 1 American Goldfinch 1 Good birding Brian from Chico Basin Ranch Brian Gibbons www.nikonbirding.com www.ventbird.com Penny Stock Jumping 2000% Sign up to the #1 voted penny stock newsletter for free today! http://thirdpartyoffers.juno.com/TGL3141/4beb638e8b2684a6571st02vuc -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. Hi Cobirders A great, chilly, day here at the Chico. This afternoon I found a few birds that weren't reported earlier in the day. Hi Cobirders Well the day started out beautiful and calm, got all the nets open and the wind gods let loose again! A Porcupine greeted me from the willows on the opening round. We did managed to catch 15 birds of 13 species before closing nets at 10. Hosted a group of sight-impaired kids from the Colorado School for the Deaf and the Blind. Very rewarding experience for all involved. They got to feel Swainson's Thrush, Chipping Sparrow, Wilson's Warbler and a Yellow-rumped Warbler. Birds banded: Red-shafted Flicker Dusky Flycatcher House Wren 2 Swainson's Thrush Brown Thrasher Western Tanager beautiful male Plumbeous Vireo Wilson's Warbler 2 Virginia's Warbler Yellow-rumped Warbler (Audubon's) Chipping Sparrow Lincoln's Sparrow Spotted Towhee I am planning on banding thru Saturday but the weather may close the station any day for the next few days. [cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch RMBO Banding 3 Oct 2009
Hi Cobirders Well we have caught our last bird of the season at Chico Basin Ranch. The third was quite slow for banding but we did have one birding highlight. An Eastern Phoebe was around the Banding Station area briefly in the morning, all efforts to relocate this bird failed. We banded just five birds today with a few recaps; Hermit Thrush 3, Lincoln's Sparrow 1, Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow 1. We finished the season having banded 1190 birds of 62 species. Hi Cobirders We had a decent arrival of Wilson's Warblers today. We banded 48 Wilson's Warblers for a season total of 548 Wilson's banded since 31 Aug. Last year from 25 Aug - 25 Sep we banded a total of 249 WIWAs. We also had a few flycatchers around again. Patroling the woods were a few Sharp-shinned Hawks. We caught a juvenile male weighing in at 95 grams, he was a good deal lighter than the Common Grackles we had last week. I am convinced that our Vireo from yesterday was a Blue-headed, we didn't see him today. Hi Cobirders We started off in the fog this morning, it burned off and became a beautiful fall day for banding. Our 44 birds seemed a bit slow after ending last week with 131 and 93 banded birds. We got our first American Goldfinch, Rock Wren and Song Sparrow of the fall. Yesterday I saw a Gambell's White-crowned Sparrow, FOS for me. [cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch RMBO Banding 12 Sep 2009
Hi Cobirders We had another great day today. Most of yesterday's birds left and a new batch arrived, again Wilson's Warblers leading the way. Overall the day was not as birdy as 11 Sep but we certainly banded a wider variety of birds today (93 total new banded). The Star of the show had to be a leucistic Wilson's Warbler. It was very bright yellow all over with creamy colored wings and tail, quite a striking bird. The bird had pinkish bill and legs and lacked all olive, gray and black tones in the plumage. Hopefully the photogs that were out will post photos. [cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch RMBO Banding 11 Sep 2009
Hi Cobirders As John Drummond has warned, we had a massive arrival of birds today at Chico, mostly Wilson's Warblers. Because of severe winds we closed nets for a few hours mid-morning we still banded 131 birds in 83.5 net hours. My typical day closing at noon would result in 110 net hours so you can see by our capture rate that there were a lot of birds around today. I was still seeing activity as I closed nets at 2pm. I am off to hunt goodies. Birds banded: Western Wood-Pewee 5 Least Flycatcher 1 Hammond's Flycatcher 1 House Wren 1 Hermit Thrush 1 Townsend's Solitaire 1 Gray Catbird 4 Northern Mockingbird 1 Blue-gray Gnatcatcher 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 3 Yellow Warbler 2 Wilson's Warbler 103 my first WIWA century-day Western Tanager 3 Black-headed Grosbeak 1 Lincoln's Sparrow 1 Chipping Sparrow 2 Before I forget again I have been seeing a Mexican-like Duck at Rose pond. I will post a birding highlights if I add anything good this afternoon. I am off... We banded 63 birds of 21 Species before noon and the heat. [cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch RMBO Banding 3 Sep 2009
Hi Cobirders Another surprisingly good day, slow and steady with fewer birds around today for sure but lots of turnover. We saw no vireos or MacGillivray's Warblers today. So far we have only recaptured 3 warblers on subsequent days. Highlight was on the closing run. A female WILLIAMSON'S SAPSUCKER took Steve and I by surprise, I believe a second ranch record, first banded! Warbler diversity was good with Ovenbird, Townsend's, Black-and-White (recap), American Redtstart all banded. Flycatchers still numerous. The Others banded total 41: Western Wood-Pewee 5 Hammond's Flycatcher 3 Dusky Flycatcher 2 Cordilleran Flycatcher 2 Willow Flycatcher 1 White-breasted Nuthatch 1 House Wren 1 Northern Mockingbird 1 Gray Catbird 3 American Robin 1 Orange-crowned Warbler 1 Yellow Warbler recap Wilson's Warbler 12 Common Yellowthroat 1 Western Tanager 1 Lazuli Bunting 1 Green-tailed Towhee 1 Red-breasted and White-breasted Nuthatches as well as Black-capped Chickadee continue. Olive-sided Flycacther, Least Flycatcher and Cassin's Kingbird were on the ranch too. Hi Cobirders Today was less birdy overall but we banded 32 birds! This tally was helped by a flock of American Robins that came through with 12 getting banded. We also banded 1 Downy Woodpecker, 2 Western Wood-Pewees, 2 Willow Flycatchers, 2 Hammond's Flycatchers, 1 House Wren, 1 RED-EYED VIREO, 1 Swainson's Thrush, 2 Gray Catbirds, recap Brown Thrasher, 5 Wilson's Warblers, 1 Lark Sparrow, 1 Blue Grosbeak and 1 Bullock's Oriole. WARNING for the first time in many years banding at the Holmes Grove (but just my second in fall) we found a decent-sized Prairie Rattlesnake very near one of the trails we course through many times a day. [cobirds] Chico Basin Ranch RMBO Banding
Hi Cobirders Today was the first day of Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory banding here at Chico Basin Ranch. We had a quiet day which allowed me to get back into the swing of things. Our very first bird was a hatch year American Redstart. We also banded Wilson's Warblers 4, Orange-crowned Warbler, House Wren 3, Cordilleran Fly, Dusky Fly, Hammond's Fly, Western Wood-Pewee, Brown Thrasher, Mourning Dove, American Robin, Lark Sparrow, Gray Catbird 2, Swainson's Thrush and a Downy Woodpecker. Also around the station today were loads of Western Wood-Pewees and an Olive-sided Flycatcher, Empids were numerous too. Nuthatches, both Red-breasted and White-breasted were about as was a Black-capped Chickadee... possible montane invasion? Yesterday was more active but Steve Brown and I were busy clearing the lanes and trails and setting up nets. I did hear an Upland Sandpiper flyover early. We will be running the banding station 6 days a week Monday-Saturday Thru 3 October (with this weekend open on Sunday 6 Sep instead of Saturday, closed Monday Labor Day). Typically earlier is better if you want to see the bird banding process and we are usually done by noon. Please send me an e-mail if you are planning on bringing a group to the banding station. Individuals are welcome any time. The banding station is free but if you continue on to bird the ranch the daily entry fee is $15/person ($10/person for groups of 6 or more). This money is used exclusively to support the banding station education programs which typically host several hundred visitors a year.
