[cobirds] Golden-crowned Sparrow--Red Rocks/Jeffco
Today, as I pulled into the Red Rocks Trading Post I saw the post by Christian Nunes that the Teller Farm's Golden-crowned Sparrow returned. The feeders and the ground were void of seed. I threw down some millet and waited for the birds to show up. The first bird out of the thicket was the dapper Golden-crowned Sparrow!! This is the fourth year this bird has wintered at Red Rocks. He first showed up as an immature in the winter of 2009. I watched the area for 45 minutes and had Scrub Jays(10), White-crowned Sparrow(1), Song Sparrows(3) Juncos(10), Spotted Towhees(3), Pine Sisken(1), and the other typical Red Rocks birds. This is the time of the year when the Red Rocks feeders can get interesting! Photos of this bird can be seen at the gallery below: http://jaeger29.smugmug.com/BIRDS/RARE-AND-UNCOMMON-2013/i-kLjMQF3 . Hello Folks, Rob Raker and I were able to observe the Golden-crowned Sparrow and Lincoln's Sparrow early this morning at the feeders behind the Red Rocks Trading Post. The Slate-colored Fox Sparrow was a no-show in the 45 minutes we were there, but Kiki Widjaja reported seeing the Fox Sparrow as well as the Lincoln's and Golden-crowned on Sunday morning. A Mountain Chickadee was a recent addition to the regulars at the feeders. We then went to Ship Rock, and the Peregrines did not disappoint us. The female perched on a juniper snag on the hillside west of the Upper South Parking Lot the whole time we were there - she did turn around on the snag once. With the sun behind us, we had great looks through our scope and studied her in detail. When we first arrived the male was perched high on Ship Rock. We saw him leave Ship Rock several times and come back and land in different spots on Ship Rock (near the previous upper left eyrie, the previous lower right eyrie, an old Raven nest on the north end). Wonder if the pair is trying to decide on an eyrie location??? In addition, the male dove on a flicker from one of his perches (unsuccessfully as the flicker did a frantic vertical dive as well and escaped). During the time we were there, the pair did some calling (female most vocal), and the male flew down and the pair copulated on the juniper snag. A busy morning at Ship Rock! Kiki Widjaja had much the same experience on Sunday morning, so it's a good time to watch the Peregrines. As a side note, the Ravens are still nesting on the west end of Creation Rock. We saw the male come and go several times, and once the female joined him and left the nest for about two minutes. We did not see the Prairie Falcons at Park Cave Rock - my thought is that the female is sitting on eggs in the eyrie and the male is out hunting. [cobirds] Golden-crowned Sparrow - Red Rocks - Jeffco
Good Morning All, The approximately 8 inches of snow and colder weather prompted me to go to the Red Rocks feeders early this morning and scatter some seed. Listening to the cries of the Peregrine Falcons while watching the Golden-crowned Sparrow under the platform feeder is a special treat. The Adult Golden-crowned Sparrow is molting and looks a little scruffy at present in contrast to the 'clean-cut' appearance of the Gambell's White-crowned Sparrow. A lone Pine Siskin was a new addition to the feeder birds at Red Rocks. Still lots of juncos with Pink-sided and Gray-headed present in good numbers and a few Oregon and Slate- colored. Saw the Pink-sided x Gray-headed cross as well. Other birds included several Black-billed Magpies, the usual number of W. Scrub-Jays, (the hoarse call of the Common Ravens on Creation Rock could be heard along with the Peregrines), a couple of Black- capped Chickadees, several Robins looking for worms along the rivulet under the platform feeder, several Spotted Towhees and Song Sparrows, and 25+ House Finches including a yellow variant, one with a white dollop on the forehead, and a House Finch with a mostly white head. Stopped by the backside of Ship Rock and was rewarded with the male Peregrine bringing prey to the female (calling loud and incessantly). The Common Ravens are still coming to their nest on Creation Rock) and trying to stay out of the way of the Peregrines. Stopped at Park Cave Rock, but did not see either of the Prairie Falcons. I believe the female started incubating last week, so we will only get glimpses of the male bringing prey back to the eyrie (didn't have time to wait this morning). Hi All, This morning the Golden-crowned Sparrow showed up around 7:45 A.M. With the snow and cold there were lots of hungry birds at the feeders behind the Red Rocks Trading Post and listening to the Peregrine Falcons calling on Ship Rock while watching the feeders is a special treat. All the various subspecies of juncos (except White-winged) are still around. Several odd looking House Finches including one with a white head and several of the yellow color variants. Did not see the FOS Chipping Sparrow that was seen on Monday, April 8. Saw one of the Prairie Falcons sitting on the top of Frog Rock when I left the park. I will be unable to get to Red Rocks tomorrow , so hopefully with another cold night on tap, someone scan throw some seed out tomorrow morning. [cobirds] Golden-crowned Sparrow+ - Red Rocks - Jeffco
Hello All, Wonderful to hear the cascading song of the Canyon Wren while putting out seed this morning at the feeders behind the Red Rocks Trading Post. The adult Golden-crowned Sparrow and Gambel's White-crowned Sparrow appeared in the first 15 minutes (~7:45). Saw all the junco subspecies including one White-winged. The fog and mist made falcon watching a little challenging, but the female Peregrine was on top of Ship Rock calling for the male. Saw both Prairie Falcons on Park Cave Rock (male brought prey), so the female hasn't started incubating yet - any day now??? Good Morning All, Shortly after 7 this morning the adult Golden-crowned Sparrow appeared along with the adult White-crowned Sparrow (Gambel's) on the flat rock slab under the upper apple tree at the feeders behind the Red Rocks Trading Post. Seeing both birds together emphasized the size difference - the Golden- crowned is a tad bit larger and heavier than the White-crowned across the back and and chest. I did not see the Fox Sparrow, but I was not there long. Just a reminder: Sunrise Services will be held at Red Rocks tomorrow morning (Easter Sunday) and they expect 10,000 or so people to attend. Good Morning All, With the heavy snow this morning, I thought the birds might use a little help. Put some seed out on and under the platform feeder behind the Red Rocks Trading Post and the Golden-crowned Sparrow and the adult White-crowned Sparrow joined the juncos, towhees, Song Sparrows, and House Finches at the feeder. Tomorrow might be a good day to pay a visit to the Red Rocks feeders. I will get some seed out either tonight or tomorrow morning (depending on the weather). Hello All, Checked out the feeders behind the Red Rocks Trading Post this morning and observed the Golden-crowned Sparrow come out of the brush around 8:00 A.M.and feed on the ground next to a classic White-winged Junco. The female Prairie Falcon was perched on top of Frog Rock and the male was perched on top of Park Cave Rock preening. Heard them calling several times but no other interaction between the pair. Checked out Ship Rock and still no Peregrine Falcons; did not see the Ravens come to their nest on the west end of Creation Rock - last week they were visiting and working on the nest nonstop. The Golden Eagle is sitting on her nest in Bear Creek Canyon below Idledale and saw the male flying low over the ridges west of the nest. This is the first time I have observed the Golden Eagle on the nest (checked last Friday), but she is difficult to see (almost impossible until she moves her head), so she could have been there last week and I just didn't see her. Good Morning All, Took some friends up to Red Rocks this morning and ran into Bruce Neuman and a friend of his at the Red Rocks feeders behind the Trading Post. We all saw the Golden-crowned Sparrow and Bruce reported they had seen the pair of Prairie Falcons engaged in courtship behavior earlier in the morning. Looked for the Peregrine Falcons on the back of Ship Rock, but looks like they haven't arrived yet. However, the pair of Common Ravens are continuing to build a nest at the extreme west end of Creation Rock. Good morning All, Art Hudak and I had the same idea this morning and threw some seed out at the feeders behind the Red Rocks Trading Post - the Golden crowned Sparrow came out and fed hungrily early on. A Mountain Chickadee was a new addition to the Red Rocks list this year (2013), and we had a White-breasted Nuthatch vocalizing. Lots of juncos of each subspecies including White-winged as well as several hybrid juncos. Still have 4-5 Song Sparrows and 3-4 Spotted Towhees. Art has a complete list. I must have just missed Mark Chavez at the feeders behind the Red Rocks Trading Post. I didn't arrive until around 4:30 p.m., and in a few short minutes I saw the Golden-crowned Sparrow and one Gray- crowned Rosy-Finch perch on the platform feeder. The only other birds that came in at that late hour were two Spotted Towhees, a couple of Song Sparrows and 20-25 assorted juncos. Watching the birds at the feeders without all the House Finches, House Sparrows, and W. Scrub Jays was a treat. Good Morning, When I arrived at the Red Rocks feeders this morning Art Hudak was there and had already put seed out. Good Morning All, The Golden-crowned Sparrow appeared under the platform feeder at 7:38 A.M. this morning. Not near as many birds at the feeders as during the winter, but still the same species. I was surprised to see a lone Pine Siskin come in to the feeder area. At Ship Rock things were busy. Saw both Peregrines flying as well as perched on ledges on Ship Rock. At one point I saw what I believe is the female PEFA land on a ledge (leading to a previous eyrie), face inward, sort of stamp her feet and look inward. What I believe is the male exploded out of the eyrie and started low before gaining altitude and flying around showing off his flying skills. Shortly thereafter the female landed on top of high perch on Ship Rock, called, and then the male came in and landed behind her and they copulated vigorously(10 seconds?). The male then took off flying high and the female remained perched on top of the rock. As far as the Ravens were concerned, in the half hour I was there, the male came in twice, called to the female, she then left the nest for a short time and joined the male. Once he flew to the base of the cliff, where the female joined him and they exchanged food???, before the female flew to the west calling as she flew and landed in a juniper on the hillside. She stayed briefly before flying back to the nest. The male then took off and flew to the SE. The other time the male called from up on the hillside, and the female left the nest and joined him for a few minutes. She then flew back to the nest calling as she flew and the male left again. There were also a number of American Kestrels in the Ship Rock vicinity as well as the pair at the first fork in the road when you come in Entrance #3. Hi All, A young man named Jay and I watched the Golden-crowned Sparrow put in an appearance under the platform feeders at the Red Rocks Trading Post about 8:10 this morning. The number of juncos seems to be reduced considerably from a week ago. The PS x WW cross was there early. Other birds of note included a Downy Woodpecker Townsend's Solitaire in the area and a Canyon Wren was heard singing once from the rocks to the south. Checked the backside of Ship Rock and found the Raven sitting on the same nest as two years ago. Did not see any falcons today. Good morning All, Went out owling early this morning and stopped by the feeders at the Red Rocks Trading Post about 6:30 A.M. Around 6:41 Ben Kemena and I watched the Golden-crowned Sparrow put in an appearance in the flat area just south of the upper apple tree. Posed for a couple of photos before disappearing back into the brush. I was looking/listening for Eastern Screech Owls on the west side of town. I have found Eastern Screech Owls along the S. Platte River and on the east side of the S. Platte, but have not been able to locate any on the western side. I have made numerous attempts over the past several years to locate Eastern Screech Owls along Bear Creek and Clear Creek without success. I know at one time there was a pair in the Wheat Ridge Greenbelt, but don't believe they are still there. Would be interested in knowing of any Eastern Screech Owls on the west side of Denver. As is often the case, the first year White-crowned Sparrow put in an appearance under the upper apple tree followed shortly thereafter by the Golden-crowned Sparrow in the same location (about 7:20 a.m.). Did not see any Rosy-Finches - probably have to wait until the next snow. Stopped by the backside of SHIPROCK (upper South Parking Lot), heard some Ravens calling, then a Prairie Falcon flew over the top of SHIPROCK, and shortly thereafter I spotted a Golden Eagle being chased along the hillside by two Ravens. Maybe some territorial disputes??? Mike Henwood Morrison Jefferson County -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups Colorado Birds group. Good Morning, Threw some seed out early this morning about 6:30 A.M. The Golden- crowned Sparrow showed up right away. I did not stay to see if the Rosy-Finches showed up. [cobirds] Golden-crowned Sparrow + - Red Rocks- Jeffco
Hi All, Since I won't be able to get to the feeders at the Red Rocks Trading post for the next couple of days, I took some seed down about 4:30P.M. and stayed for 45 minutes. Seems like some new birds arrived during the day. As soon as I arrived I noticed two White-winged Juncos side by side below the lower apple tree. During my stay I observed 4-5 distinct White-winged Juncos plus a lone American Tree Sparrow. This is the first Tree Sparrow I have seen this season at Red Rocks and I have never seen more than a couple of White-winged Juncos at any one time. Other birds missing from this morning's report included 4 Black- capped Chickadees (which I neglected to mention this morning), 5 American Robins, and one calling Townsend's Solitaire. At 4:45 P.M. a Great Horned Owl hooted and the Golden-crowned Sparrow came to the platform feeder and fed for several minutes at 5:15 P.M. The Rosy-Finch flock did not appear while I was there, but with all the snow cover and cold, I would think the Rosy's would show up tomorrow morning. [cobirds] Golden-crowned Sparrow - Red Rocks - Jeffco
Good Morning All, The Golden-crowned Sparrow first appeared a little after 8 this morning below the platform feeder. He spent the next 10-15 minutes alternating between feeding under the platform feeder and retreating in to the shrubs. Other highlights of the morning at the feeders included: 2 pair of striking Cassin's Finches landing in the top of the lower apple tree around 7:45 A.M. one White-winged junco feeding next to the Golden-crowned Sparrow good looks at the PS x WW Junco observing the very handsome dark chocolate Song Sparrow - the heavy streaking and buffy malar markings are much more pronounced than the other Song Sparrows present at the feeders listening to the call of a Townsend's Solitaire while observing the Golden-crowned Sparrow Prairie Falcon sitting on top of large rock - visible to the SE Rob Raker reported seeing the pair of Prairie Falcons flying back and forth between Cave Rock and Frog Rock on his way out of the park - a little bonding and pre-courtship activity perhaps. The Golden-crowned Sparrow showed up 7:22 A.M. on the flat rock just to the left of the upper apple tree. As is often the case, the 1st year White-crowned made an appearance followed shortly thereafter by the adult Golden-crowned Sparrow. Seems like the two often appear at the feeder together and often I notice the young White-crowned before the Golden-crowned Sparrow. The Golden-crowned Sparrow showed up under the lower apple tree about 7:27 A.M. this morning. If you are planning on visiting the feeders at Red Rocks this weekend, plan on bringing some seed with you. I will be unable to visit the feeders this weekend. Hi All, Threw some seed out early this morning at the feeders at the Red Rocks Trading Post. The Golden-crowned Sparrow was seen early in the morning on the flat rock under the upper apple tree and later in the morning under the platform feeder. Lots of birds with the snow and cold. Here's my approximation: Western Scrub Jay 18 BC Chickadee 4 Spotted Towhee 3 Song Sparrow 5 including one dark milk chocolate colored bird with bold stripes and central breast spot. White-crowned Sp.1 1st year bird Golden-crowned Sp. 1adult bird Dark-eyed Junco 50+ including all sub-species - Gray-headed, Pink- sided, Oregon, Slate-colored, Cassiar, one White-winged, one PS x WW Junco Red-winged Blackbird 2 House Finch 50+ Pine Siskin 4 House Sparrow 20-25 In addition there were groups of Robins and single Townsend's Solitaires in the Trading Post area. On my way out there were two Prairie Falcons perched about 100 yards apart on the Frog Rock formation. I didn't have my scope, so could not positively identify the birds as a male and female pair. But maybe there is a pair spending the winter together in the Red Rocks area??? The Golden-crowned Sparrow was very cooperative this morning for the DFO Field Trip appearing several times. Our group also was able to see the Prairie Falcon harass a Red-tailed Hawk perched on top of one of the large rock formations (Ship Rock). Later on the group had good looks at the perched Prairie Falcon. We also had good looks at a Western Red-tail and were able to compare the Eastern and Western sub- species. The group finished up observing at close range a Dipper feeding along Bear Creek in the Morrison Town Park. Arrived early (as did Joey Kellner) with seed hoping that a flock of Rosy-Finches would put in an appearance, but no luck with the Rosy's. Just got back into town so threw some seed out at the feeders behind the Red Rocks Trading Post early AM. Didn't see the Golden-crowned Sparrow early, but bumped into Dan Brook Cheryl Teuton at the Red Rocks feeders later in the morning - we observed the Golden-crowned Sparrow about 11:45 A.M. Threw some seed out at the Red Rocks feeders behind the Trading Post mid-afternoon. Didn't take long for the Golden-crowned Sparrow to show up - along with hordes of other species. Think the birds could feel the storm coming in and were filling up in anticipation of a long, cold next 24 hours. The Golden-crowned Sparrow first appeared at 7:30 A.M. on the flat rock under the upper apple tree. It stayed in the vicinity of the upper apple tree for about 10 minutes before departing. Also had a male Cassin's Finch perch in the crown of the lower apple tree for a short time - 1st Cassin's I have seen at the Red Rocks feeders. Stopped by the feeders at the Red Rocks Trading Post about 1:00 P.M. this afternoon. The Golden-crowned Sparrow was spotted feeding by the lower apple tree. Threw some seed out before 7 at the Red Rocks feeders - The Adult Golden-crowned Sparrow appeared for the first time at 7:22 A.M. The pair of Prairie Falcons are still in the park and early in the morning are usually seen near Cave Rock. Last winter we had only one Prairie Falcon winter in the park. Thought folks might be interested in knowing I watched the Red Rocks feeders yesterday evening (Nov. 2)after the storm from 5:00 to 6:30 P.M., and did not see the Golden-crowned Sparrow. Then this morning around 8:00 A.M. along with Michael Kiessig Rob Raker, we observed the adult Golden-crowned Sparrow for the first time this fall. We saw him several times in the next hour. Last year the Golden-crowned was first seen on Oct. 16. Also there are still a pair of Prairie Falcons at Red Rocks using both Cave Rock and Ship Rock for perches. They fly in and out of the eyries they use on Cave Rock as well as the Peregrine eyries on Shiprock. I'm not positive of this, but I believe in past winters we have only seen one Prairie Falcon in the Red Rocks area. Be interesting to see if the pair remains together throughout the winter. The Golden-crowned Sparrow was present again today with a White-throated Sparrow. If you get up there try to bring some seed. If we keep these feeders stocked you never know what will show this fall/winter. This morning, I decided to run over to Red Rocks to see if the Golden-crowned Sparrow would show at the feeders. When I arrived, Carol Sullivan was looking for her life bird. I scattered some hulled millet and waited for at least an hour, looking through the various sparrows (White-crowned, Juncos, and Song) and enjoying good conversation. At last, the Golden-crowned made a short visit before giving up trying to get food near the aggressive Scrub Jays. Distant photos can be seen later today at the site below. Re: [cobirds] Golden-crowned Sparrow--Red Rocks/Jeffco
Hi all, I read with interest the reports on the Golden-crowned sparrow at Red Rocks. I would have to go back to my year lists ( Oh, where are they?? difficult to find after a move). But when we started birding 20 years ago we were eager to find that sparrow and took a number of bags of seed to Red Rocks (courtesy of us and Boulder Bird Club). and were thrilled to find it. I am curious to know if someone (Brandon perhaps?) has records that show when the Golden -crowneds' were first found there? Has anyone ever done any banding there to determine what the yearly population has been? I would think there would be a larger population now that these birds have been here for decades at least. Any thoughts? With a couple of inches of snow on the ground this morning, I decided to check on the Golden-crowned Sparrow at the feeders at the Red Rocks Trading Post. Threw out some seed around 8:00 a.m., then went and did some birding in the park. Returned to the feeders around 9:30 a.m. and the Golden-crowned Sparrow showed up under the apple tree with some juncos and House Finches about 9:45 a.m. Drove the roads in BCLP to look for bluebirds. Had a FOS large flock (40 -50) of Mountain Bluebirds in the area below the dam along the road north of Mountain View Picnic Area. This sparrow is still at the Trading Post feeder. I saw it today, Saturday, at about 3 pm with other birders. Thanks to Sue Riffe and previous posters. The juvenile Golden-crowned creeps out from the bushes to the feeder area, then gets chased back into the bushes by Spotted-Towhees. This feeder is a good spot to photograph Western Scrub Jays, Spotted Towhees, Dark-eyed Juncos, squirrels, bunnies, and other surprises. Here are a couple of so-so photos I took of the sparrow—it moves fast and disappears fast: http://www.flickr.com/photos/twilberding/ Here is a map to find the feeder--note blue balloon: http://tiny.cc/AjxMO Address for car navigation is 17900 Trading Post, Morrison, CO 80465 Red Rocks is very picturesque, a sort of rock and roll pilgrimage site. Instead of the Trading Post I suggest construction of a Hard- Rock Café--but keep the bird feeder out back. This morning, I stopped by Red Rocks and brought some millet and niger for the ground and sunflower for the platform feeder, guessing the feeders would be empty. I was right. I left for 45 minutes and returned to see if the Golden-crowned Sparrow was still there. He came along with the Chipping Sparrow to the feeders twice between 12:00-12:30. The seed brought in tons of Juncos and Scrub Jays along with Towhees, House Finches, Chickadees, and Song Sparrows. I added a better photo of the Golden-crowned Sparrow to the gallery below.
