Seriously, this is funnier than Monty Python's old Ministry of Arguments sketch. No, it isn't! Yes, it is. Oh look, this isn't an argument. It occurred to me last night that there's another Python bit that's even more on point than the argument sketch. I'm thinking of Holy Grail, where the questers ask the French, Who will join us in our quest for the Holy Grail? John Cleese, in his ridiculous French accent, leans over the castle wall and responds that they already have one, then bends down to his confreres and says, I told them we already had one! and they all start laughing. I have a vision of Tom leaning over to whomever it is that he leans over to and saying, I told them Lauren should've gotten an iMac to take to class!, followed by everyone clutching their sides and dissolving in gales of hilarity. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

Advertising pays attention to human nature. Why are you insisting that a single ad has to cover all possible reasons to do something? If a car commercial (I know how you love car analogies) talks about gas mileage, does that imply that the only reason to buy the car is that it gets good mileage? Obviously it does not. It's just the subject of that particular ad. This particular ad is for people who are on a budget; the next one could be entirely different. Note that the campaign title is Laptop Hunters (plural), not Laptop Hunter. Presumably there will be more than one; and, as I already mentioned (and you seem to have ignored), there are other MS ads currently running that have nothing to do with budgets. You got it. The ad says, if you are on a budget. You are correct that it says nothing about if you are not on a budget, therefore nothing about the converse. That is called branding. When was the last time you watched a Movie? I mean really closely. Notice how many different brands are noticeable either with the characters using them or the Logo being front and center. (Bond Movies are notorious for this.) Companies pay big monies to have their logo plastered in a movie and be identified with something. Yes even Apple does this too. MS was touting that it is a bargain in this time of tight monies. It's logo being plastered all over the ad is what they aimed at. When you think saving money think MS. Actually it was a good marketing approach in this time of tight monies. Re: [CGUYS] Not cool enough [was re: Laptop Hunters]
You're surprised that the sponsor of an ad would tell you who he is and what his product is? I interpret the meaning of touting as telling you what is so great about it, not just flashing a product name. I repeat, for the nth time, MS is not directly selling Windows here. They are indirectly, by convincing you to buy a PC laptop. Certainly, you are aware that MS earns almost all of its revenue from Windows on preinstalled PCs, not from folks who say, Gee, I like the looks of that there Vista; I think I will go out and by me a copy to upgrade my XP (THOSE are your MS Fanboys) And, as I said before, this ad is targeted at people who don't give a damn about what OS comes with the machine or are complacent about getting yet another Windows PC. It's Apple's job to convince them otherwise. And their I'm a PC are very effective. phartz...@gmail.com wrote: On Wed, Apr 1, 2009 at 11:01 AM, Steve at Verizon stevet...@verizon.net wrote: Actually, MS is in no way touting their operating system in this commercial, which is aimed at an audience which is indifferent to operating systems (hard to believe for this newsgroup there are so many of them out there) and are just looking for an inexpensive laptop. '24' is an exception to this, at least in some cases (I don't watch it much). If you look at their big screen surveillance-type displays you'll see a Vista task bar at the bottom. Not sure if that counts as a paid product placement, though. It's probably too subtle for MS to have paid for it. I was amused once to spot the icon of a program that I wrote a lot of. [CGUYS] Audacity problem
We've been using Audacity for several months now to capture audio from a reel-to-reel, with good results. Today, all we seem to get is a low-level recording with lots of hiss. Listening to the audio through headphones attached to the reel-to-reel sounds fine. I've tried several different setting on both the r-t-r output Audacity preferences, but no luck. I've gone into the PC Control Panel to make sure all the input levels were checked (we're using the microphone jack on the back of the PC). The r-t-r weighs about 40 lb., so before I try using it on another computer, any thoughts? tia. david David Turk Manager, Preservation Imaging Services Indiana Historical Society Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center 450 W. Comparing the Xbox with the WII is not a fair comparison. They serve different purposes and really are aimed at two different groups. The same with the PS3. Xbox made marketing smarts with the Netflixs deal. Stewart At 07:07 PM 4/1/2009, you wrote: Anyway, it was Tom who made the initial comparison. I was just pointing out that his conclusion conflicts with his verdict in the case of PC v. Mac. In the case of computers, quality is what's important (so MS loses). In the case of games, it's sales that are important (so MS loses). Except I would say that the quality of the Wii is superior to the XBox. I only brought up sales figures to give the WFBs an opportunity to admit that sales numbers are not what is important. Th Wii is superior because it is a better design and a more clever use of technology. The MS product is just more dumb iron. The design philosophy is that bigger, bulkier, and speedier is all that counts. I only brought up sales figures to give the WFBs an opportunity to admit that sales numbers are not what is important. Nope. Gotta love how you make stuff up. I brought up sales numbers, not you, and only because it's the only conceivable measure by which you could say that Xbox lost to Wii, and because this is totally inconsistent with your position on PC/Mac. Your inquiry, as I feel sure you will recall, had to do with quality, not with sales. Except I would say that the quality of the Wii is superior to the XBox. The MS product is just more dumb iron. Absolutely. Video quality, audio quality, number of voices, smoothness and responsiveness, connectivity, none of that irrelevant crap really matters in gameplay. Who would think such a thing? *Totally* fooled the reviewers who said things like hands down your best game console option. Morons. Didn't they see the logo? We get it, Tom. MS sucks. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *

Not only that but Netflix is allowing members to use a Xbox a lot like an Apple TV. Son in Law did that and loved it. He also uses it as his DVD player, no extra equipment. By the way on a 46 TV it looks awesome. Stewart At 09:04 PM 4/1/2009, you wrote: Absolutely. http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2009/03/kitchen-pcs-gai.html For $600 to $800 they have got to be kidding. We have already established that MS's customers won't spend that kind of money. Re: [CGUYS] First Place? [Was: Not cool enough [was re: Laptop
You make my point. You dispute this view in PC v. Mac but endorse it in Xbox v. Wii. The only thing that's consistent is that MS loses no matter what. You are having trouble following obvious logic. Yup - it is ultimately game play that sustains interest in a game system. The rest is chrome. By the way on a 46 TV it looks awesome. It is indeed, I've seen it. You can even use it as a receiver/DVR for over-the-air HDTV (stick a digital TV tuner in a PC, then stream the signal over the home network to the Xbox, where you use Media Extender to control playing and recording). Or watch HD movies and network TV directly off the Internet via Xbox Live Video. It's pretty cool stuff. * ** List info, subscription management, list rules, archives, privacy ** ** policy, calmness, a member map, and more at http://www.cguys.org/ ** *
