[CGUYS] McAfee vs. MS Security Essentials

2010-04-27 Thread Rich Schinnell

From:Alvin Auerbach alvin.auerb...@verizon.net

Which is best for Windows 7: Run McAfee, run MS Security essentials,
or run both?

Thanks

After the bad press McAfee received last week when they put a critical
windows file in their jail, I would not recommend McAfee.

MS Security Essentials seems to be a pretty good AV. and the price
is right. FREE

I personally run Vipre Premium on all my machines as they have an all
you can eat for home use for less than $50 a year. It is an AV and
firewall program as well as a web browser filter.

No financial ties to me. It just works with a small footprint.

The problem is that another gadget blog that was approached asked their

have been considered stolen property.

CA state law is apparently lost items are to be held for six months and
attempts must be made to find the legitmate owner before they become
property of the finder. So doing things like taking it apart would be
considered illegal. Apple could be pressing on this but it may look like an
easy win for a prosecutor who needs a run in the win column.

[CGUYS] fios renewal was:Digital TV [Was: Broadband Speeds Map]

2010-04-27 Thread gerald slawecki
my promo fios ran its' course. so, since i had a really lot of time to waste,
i tried to renew online. i cannot renew on line, as i am an existing
customer. all packages on line are promo packages and are for new customers.

for the triple play(tv,computer, telephone), the telephone person gave me 3
options . lo,mid,hi:$120,130, and 145. two year package, with a $360 pro
rated early cancellation penalty. i had a $110 cost for the middle package.
the mid pack is 5/20 up/down. the hi pack was 30/30. big push (lots of sales
ups) to get me to get that wonderful speed. after starting on acoustical
modems, 5/20 seems pretty fast to me.

they will not show in writing what is in any of the packages. they will not
show in writing what is in the cancellation package(that's 360 bucks). i got
some verbal stuff, but did not tape it, and do not believe they would honor it
, anyway.

i had received a letter from verizon notifying me that my 130 promo mid package
was expiring, and going from 110 to 120. this has no cancel penalty. so i
took the mid package at 120.

i received an email conformation that i have renewed. my new mid pack is $125.

i just got a hard copy promo letter from Comcast for their triple play for
$99. anyone have this package? any ideas what is in the package in the way of
speeds and feeds and HD channels?

If there are two people at the address, you can cancel one and re-up new
in the other name. Then you can get the promo overcharge instead of the
existing customer overcharge. You're lucky. We can't get FIOS. Nobody
lives in this county.

Move to France and get TV, phone, Internet, cellular for $33/mo total.
But you can't have that in the US. Too bad. Your elected representatives
think they're supposed to represent the telcos instead of the customers.

You are presuming that the efforts of law enforcement in this case
were and/or are effective. We do know that they did manage to smash
through the front door of a home, so that much they can do. However,
their seizure of equipment and personal property is suspect and may
well have been illegal. I also do not believe there is any talk of
prosecution at this juncture because no one has been charged with any
crime.

I wonder what party pushed to have the police to become involved in
this situation? Apple Corp. is a corporate partner with the division
of law enforcement that conducted the search of the home and the
seizure of equipment in possession of the editor of Gizmodo who is
said to have been in possession of the iPhone that had been abandoned,
allegedly sold and then returned to Apple.

It is claimed by the original finder of the lost iPhone, as well as
by Gizmodo, that early attempts to return the phone to the presumed
owner, Apple Corp., were rebuffed and/or ignored. Most likely, the
calls to Apple Corp. about the found phone were considered to be a
hoax or in reference to some iPhone knock-off. Those initial return
attempts could not get past the first-tier call takers at Apple which
meant that no one higher up at Apple was reachable. That being the
case, the phone was apparently sold to Gizmodo, inspected, and then
handed over to apple upon request. Then came the raid.
