Tom, This is one of those 'all-in-one' kind of questions that I hate.
Not the question itself, but how the tech industry tries to encapsulate

Don't use WinXP to record video. It would be like turning a Ferrari

[CGUYS] Notebook woes

2010-03-14 Thread Christopher Range
1. Control Panel

Only a few things in the Control work. Every one that doesn't work, gives me
the same error-

C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe

2. Start Menu/System Tray

The reason for combining those two, is that, Norton Security Suite for example,
will run when I click on the icon in the System Tray but, not from the Start
Menu. I will be asked what I want to open the program with. If I go through the
'Run' command, the same thing happens, that happened going from the Start Menu.

System:

OS: XP Pro
RAM: 1GB

We don't have enough information, really, to tell you.

Here are some possibilities:

1. You don't understand how the links are displayed in Google.

2. The link you go to is the same one, but it redirects you to another

3. There is some problem with your DNS.

4. You aren't really at Google, but a phishing site.

5. You have some malware on your system.

1. I do understand how the links on Google are displayed

2. I tried that a couple times, to see if that was a possibility. When
I copied the link and tried it in IE, there was the same problem.

3. The DNS is fine.

4. I know how to get to Google. As for a phishing site, that sounds

5. I sure hope not.

When you click on a link on a Google search results page the link goes
back to Google with the URL of the site you want to go to passed as a

but, every answer that suggested a particular piece of software,
recommended software that had the 'free' hook.

Since programs like Spybot n' AVG are free, why isn't there a registry

only card he would actually be putting in these slots is a sound card,
it still makes no sense to need more than one or two PCI slots.

Think about, a motherboard manufacturer's goal is to make
motherboard's. They don't focus entirely on, good quality graphics or,
good quality sound. I have looked at the difference between my
motherboard's graphics function and, my video card. My video card is
better. The same goes for my sound card.

It doesn't make sense to you. But it certainly makes sense to me.

Another camp fears that all the onboard devices will fail at some
point and they will need PCI slots to use to prevent having to replace
the mobo. They haven't actually had this experience, but their
overwhelming *fear* of it happening will probably guide their choices
for many years to come. Again, they apparently haven't actually
counted how many PCI slots would be needed to replace all the broken
onboard devices. One I think (audio), although there are USB audio
solutions also.

While you are correct, I haven't counted. I still consider it
overdependence on the motherboard, to plug in everything under the sun,
directly into the motherboard.

Hitachi drives are currently the best drives on the market. They're
built to higher specs, that's why they cost a bit more. They may be
overkill for most people. If you had a bad experience with one then
it's probably no great loss as you have many other viable choices for
average systems.

Hitachi is a moot point, in that, I am not debating the quality of their

[CGUYS] XP Pro problems

2009-12-15 Thread Christopher Range
I have XP Pro SP1 via registered CD License. My computer:

OS: XP Pro
Mbd: Soyo SY-7VBA133U (6PCI, 1AGP)
CPU: P3 933Mhz(clock speed 133Mhz)
RAM: 1GB PC133
HDC: AHA-39320
HD: 147GB(2) U320 SCSI
Video: 20 LG Flatron W2053TX
Vid. Cont.: ATI Radeon 9600 SE
VRAM: 128MB
Sound Card: Audigy 2ZS

I know that some of the specs I have listed above, probably don't have a
connection to the problem. But I didn't want to leave anything out.

I installed XP SP2 via upgrade CD and, when I tried to re-boot, the computer
will hang right after the XP logo screen. So I thought the upgrade CD was
damaged.

I downloaded XP SP3 from Microsoft's website and, installed it. It is said to
include all previous service packs. When I tried to re-boot, I encountered the
same problem.

I know that, a lot of the hardware on my computer needs to be upgraded. I have
been looking for ATX P4 motherboards with the same number of PCI slots. Since I
am not a gamer, I haven't bothered with upgrading the video card.

So, I would appreciate all feedback to my problem.

My first guess would be driver issues. Have you tried to start up in

As an aside...Motherboards today almost always include sound and some sort
of video on board. When or if these go out, you can easily put a card in

the monitor has a USB connector, instead of a 15-pin connector. The

If you buy a smartphone through Verizon, be prepared for an increase

accidental data transmissions of as little as 0.02kb. 'They configure
phones to have multiple easily hit keystrokes to launch 'Get it now'

instant you call the function, they charge you the data fee. Even
canceling these unintended requests as fast as possible using the End

When I got home, I hooked the USB keyboard n' mouse, to my desktop, via

fine. But, When I attached the USB mouse n' keyboard to the card, the
keyboard doesn't work, despite installing the driver software.

What am I missing, apart from trying the USB ports on the

[CGUYS] Norton i.e. bug/virus/trojan

2009-04-27 Thread Christopher Range
Is there a bug/virus/trojan that causes the program to intentionally
think, the computer is not protected? I have Norton Internet Security
2009. Sometimes it shows that the computer is protected, with a green
checkmark and, sometimes it shows the computer as not being protected
with a red 'x'. This happens on a daily basis. So I am wondering if
there is something that causes the program to say the computer is
protected, when it isn't and, vice versa.

I will check online but, anyone who has encountered this sort of
problem, please let me know.

[CGUYS] Spyware/Registry problem

2008-07-10 Thread Christopher Range
To start from the very beginning of the problem, for several weeks I had been
getting an error message during the loading of XP Pro, saying that it could not
find something related to 'MyWebSearch'.

Well, Apparently, when I uninstalled it, it removed everything, but the
registry key.

I ignored the error message for some time, until tonight. I went on to the
Net, and found clear instructions on how to remove it. I followed the
instructions implicitly, including backing up the registry file, when it
instructed to do so.

After I saved the new registry file, I rebooted.

But, Now, When I try to open many(not all at once) of my programs, I get the
error message 'DestroyWindow could not be located in dynamic link library
user32.dll.'.

I didn't find a clear answer on the Net.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I don't know what machine they were originally recorded on so, I can

Yes, It was during the days when a 'rack/tower' stereo system was only a

connect the output of the Revox to the input of the computer, make

you have a separate USB sound input device you will need to install

connections between the tape deck and the sound input device should be
similar. Make a test transfer or three to check levels and your in
business. If your recording program fails to see any incoming audio
check the programs' own input settings to be sure that the software
has taken note of the line input setting for the computer hardware.
Software is cranky that way - even ( gasp! ) on Macs.

I detest 'on-board' technology because, that leaves the user at the

I connected the RCA-to-Stereo patch cable. The Line Input is active.
While I have that active, the tape deck is still not recognized. I
double-checked the positioning of the patch cable on, both, my sound

I will check the tape heads to make sure they are coming in contact with

OK, one step at a time. When you play a tape do the meters indicate
signal, and when you plug in headphones to the PHONES front panel
output on the deck can you hear the sound?

The meters do not indicate signal. While I do have a pair of earphones,
I would need an adapter to get them to work because the jack is a
different size.

I'm saying, systematically, let's get the deck first, then the
connection to the 2ZS (is that a laptop card?) then the software.

The 2ZS is, the Creative Labs SoundBlaster Audigy 2ZS.

essentially have the same problem, as if I made a copy of a cassette

What Riley says is accurate. If the tapes were not stored tail-out
(that is stored in non-rewound condition) you can expect problems.

Ah, ok.

This goes for both cassette and reel-to reel. Of course if the head
alignment on the playback machine differs from that of the recording
machine you'll also have issues.

I won't have to worry about a recording machine because, I will be
recording them onto my computer, before I transfer them to CD.

Some machines (all good ones, IMHO) have some degree of azimuth
correction. This can sometimes be applied to good effect. Basically
trial and error, you're looking for maximum high frequency response
out of the recording.

True

If you have actual print-through, as in layer-to-layer magnetic
transfer, there's not much you can do about it. If the tape was
tightly packed, not stored tail-out, this is more likely.

I am hoping I don't have that. If they do(which I suspect, most of them
will), I can blame it on my mother since she is not technology savvy
and, probably all of the reel-to-reel. recordings are from the 1960's n'
70's. Including one from the day Dr. Rev. Martin Luther King, Jr. was
assasinated.

Different flavors of tape have different characteristics. I don't
endorse it, but see this on tape baking:

http://www.tangible-technology.com/tape/baking1.html

Thankyou for the link.

I'd try to avoid doing this to a tape that's tightly wound, but I'd
balance that against the potential oxide loss of winding a tail-out
tape into a looser pack by simply playing it and then doing it.

Agreed.

If you do that play with the azimuth and use headphones to see if you
can reduce the garbage. If you can't and the tape is visibly losing
oxide you're probably hosed.

Well, I don't think I would be, but, the tape certainly would.

Take this with a grain of salt, it's been many years since I used tape
regularly.

Same here. Both tape and vinyl feel like the dinosaur age.

Here is the link to the Revox A77
http://www.analogstereo.com/images/r2r/a77_main.jpg. A neighbor gave
me the proper cable to transfer the reel-to-reel, to my computer.

No, I haven't ever seen a case that took in any appreciable amount of air from
the bottom.

If you're interested in max cooling, leave your case *open*. Point a fan at it.

While it is staying cool, it still gets awfully dusty. Is that one of
the omens of having a computerthat, the inside of a computer will
invariably get dust on the inside, eventually?

Just think of it as a whole house air cleaner.

Ok. I do have one quandry on the 'air circulation' issue. I was
reading the other day that, leaving the case open while using the
computer would actually allow more dust to get on the iinside of the
computer yet, that is what one person mentioned, that they do.

I mean why you want this case so much you want to spend that much on feet?

I thought I might as well, use the whole case for spare parts since, the
production of the case was discontinued several years ago. Besides, I
have had my present case 7-8yrs.. Since the case online is the same
exact model, I should make use of the whole case.
