Yo,

If I understand correctly, the first CD is 200 M? I have an upgraded
system, that I upgrade daily, and therefore don't have a way of installing
 from CD.

   - If Windows is also on the computer, DrakFont gives the user access
to his Windows fonts under Linux.

BUG: If C:/windows/fonts doesn't exist then check C:/winnt/fonts for winnt
users (like me). You may even want to check a few more directories like
win95, win98, or something, but pkease definately check foir
 C:/winnt/fonts.

uggh, you got UNIX fever. it's a backslash under M$ :-)

i propose a more elagant way. since i've not used drakfont before...so i
dunno if this features is already there: how about we let users specify the
windows path? and btw, how do you know that the stuff is necessarily going
tob e on /dev/hda1 or /dev/sda1 ? i have got my NT installed on D:\ ...

or maybe something like

find . -name '*.ttf' -print fontlist.txt

uh, yuou know what i'm talking about.

 it???

   - Now includes brand new XFree 4.0 servers, with new modular
  architecture.

Can user select between XFree86 3 servers and 4 servers?

so you want to install both xfree 3 and xfree 4? i doubt it..

[Cooker] Suggestions...

2000-04-26 Thread Bill Greenwood

1) Would it be possible to divide up the RPMs to the 2 different
directories (RPMS vs. RPMS2) for the two different CDs on all the Cooker
mirror sites? This would be a BIG HELP in keeping them up to date.

2) A MakeBootDisk button on the DrakConfig control panel would be handy.

3) On the installer: I suggest that on the first section when we are
talking about SCSI, that the first question should be: Do you have any SCSI
devices then if not, then skip this section completely. If you do then
ask the next question: Do you want to search for (SCSI) devices then
continue from that point.

Hope this is the kind of stuff you're looking for, and that this helps.

Keep up the good work Mandrake.

Given that rebuilding from the SRPM created a working version, and you cannot

No, not really. :-) i think a more correct one would be "lesser GPL". LPGL
is not necessarily for .so files, it can be for others as well. but in all,
LGPL is less restrictive than GPL, and does allow proprietary programs to
link to LGPL stuff while for GPL, anything linked must also be GPL. however,
you can link GPL stuff to non-GPL libraries, one of the good examples is
KDE, because KDE uses qt library, which has a really ugly qt license ...

Certainly he would. The GPL takes away rights that the LGPL left to the user.

Don't be fooled. The GPL is far from Free Software. It is a communistic
scheme to gain control of all software.

If you really understand what Free means, you will choose LGPL or BSD.

 1) Would it be possible to divide up the RPMs to the 2 different
directories (RPMS vs. RPMS2) for the two different CDs on all the Cooker
mirror sites? This would be a BIG HELP in keeping them up to date.

the list is (now) in Mandrake/base/rpmslist

Would it be possible now then to have hd.img search both dirs on the hard
disk for files like cdrom.img does (or does it already do this)? It would
be so much easier also if the two dirs were divided on the mirrors as well,
but thanks for the list. That is a big help. :)

 2) A MakeBootDisk button on the DrakConfig control panel would be handy.

there is via drakboot

I looked there, didn't see it, will look again.

This should be pretty simple as it would only require a different order of
the questions, and the adding of the word 'SCSI' to the one dialog box.

[Cooker] Important drakxtools error

2000-04-26 Thread Stefan Siegel

Hello Pixel et. al.,

as main german translator of Mandrake 7.1 manuals I wanted to shoot

I startet the program as root and realized that it startet in english, even
with my german environment for root. As I knew the strings were translated
to german (I didi it myself ... ;-), I had a closer look at the problem.

A simple strace showed up the problem:

* adduserdrake was looking for the pofiles as follows:

  | /usr/lib/perl5/5.00503/i386-linux/po/de_DE.po

  | /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.005/po.cz2
  | ./po.cz2
  +--8---8--

* I have the following environment set as root (correct settings for Germany):

  +--8---8--
  | LC_ALL=de_DE
  | LC_CTYPE=de_DE.ISO8859-1
  | LESSCHARSET=latin1
  | LINGUAS=de
  +--8---8--

* I made a symlink in "/usr/lib/libDrakX/po" from "de.po.bz2" to
"de_DE.po.bz2". With that link everything went well.
I suppose this problem will also accour with all other locaes ...

Why is "adduserdrake" not looking for "de.po.bz2" as a fallback from
"de_DE.po.bz2" ?

As a quick hack you can add symlinks for all languages, but I think there
must be an other solution ...

Why are those files not in "/usr/share/locale/de/LC_MESSAGES/DrakX.mo"?
I think this would solve your problems ...

Why have I translated all tis stuff if noone uses it (when correct l18n is
used ...), so please try to correct it for 7.1. I will continue using
german screenshots so far (produced with the symlink) ...

BTW: I've attached the image currently used in the english version
(adduserdrake.gif) which differs from the one I get when I start
"adduserdrake" from my currently installed "drakxtools-1.1.1-5mdk"
(adduserdrake-sg.gif). Which one will be in 7.1 ?

[Cooker] xemacs-21.1.9-3mdk: annoying destruction of default font settings

2000-04-26 Thread David Aspinall

I've always hated the default .emacs supplied by Mandrake.

Imagine my shock to see the new xemacs has a site-start.el which
trashes my default font settings, amongst the other mess there.

Could you not make this file optional?

[Cooker] xemacs-21.1.9-3mdk: annoying destruction of default font settings

2000-04-26 Thread David Aspinall

P.S.

To be a bit less abrasive, here is a much more polite way to set the
default font for you:

  (set-face-font 'default "-*-Fixed-Medium-R-*-*-*-130-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1")

You should use this in place of the line

  (setq default-frame-alist '((font . "-*-Fixed-Medium-R-*-*-*-130-*-*-*-*-iso8859-1")

in /etc/emacs/site-start-xemacs.el

This avoids the annoying font switching on startup (first screen
appears in large font before switching to your font), and it
also avoids trashing user preferences saved with "Save Options".

[Cooker] Bug in Hydrogen/Cooker script by Kenny Graunke

2000-04-26 Thread Willy Frissen

L.S.,

If I'm completely wrong here, I would like to apologize for the
intrusion

As I was adapting the new script to generate ISO images for Mandrake
7.1-BETA (Hydrogen) to my needs, I discovered that directory 'cd1' is not
created. I guess there's a typo here...

Is:
mkdir -p $mdkLOCALROOT/tmp
**mkdir -p $mdkLOCALROOT/cd2
mkdir -p $mdkLOCALROOT/cd2/Mandrake/RPMS2

Should be:
mkdir -p $mdkLOCALROOT/tmp
**mkdir -p $mdkLOCALROOT/cd1
mkdir -p $mdkLOCALROOT/cd2/Mandrake/RPMS2

Also several 'line-breaks' should be adapted for the 'mv' commands, or '\'
should be used.

[Cooker] 7.1b faults

2000-04-26 Thread Jim Bradley

I updated my mirror of "cooker" last evening and did a new install. I
have a couple of problems that I didn't have with previous installs.

1.) I find that the root KDE desktop does not have any applications
installed in the taskbar as it has in the past (It now has only the "K"
(application launcher), Desktops switcher, Logout and Lock, along with
the 4 desktop buttons (default).

2.) When right clicking on the root KDE desktop, you can now add a new
folder only, but now applications, url's, etc. As I recall, this was a
problem in the past on user desktops, but not root. Now, the user
desktops are OK, but root doesn't have the ability to add applications.

3.) The error message, "can't create modem lock file", occurs when
attempting to use kppp from a user desktop, which has been usable in the
past.

This loop does not work very well, since rpmlist only has the main name of the

Running this, the ISO file for cd1 ended up at about 710 MB.
Try fitting that onto a CD!

sorry.

It seems to still have problems:

As I was adapting the new script to generate ISO images for Mandrake
7.1-BETA (Hydrogen) to my needs, I discovered that directory 'cd1' is not

Nope, it's not a typo, it's a worthless line... : )

 Is:
 mkdir -p $mdkLOCALROOT/tmp
 **mkdir -p $mdkLOCALROOT/cd2
 mkdir -p $mdkLOCALROOT/cd2/Mandrake/RPMS2

Should be:
 mkdir -p $mdkLOCALROOT/tmp
 mkdir -p $mdkLOCALROOT/cd2/Mandrake/RPMS2

Why? The script creates the cd2 directory, and moves the appropriate
files into it. cd1 contains everything else, so I just mv (rename) the
"mirror" directory to cd1. I just thought it would be easier to rename
the directory than to create a new one, move everything into it, and
remove the old one. If you create cd1, things will be in cd1/mirror/
instead of cd1/ (totally screwed up).

Also several 'line-breaks' should be adapted for the 'mv' commands,
 or '\' should be used.

Yes - it seems somehow when it was put on the webpage a lot of
linebreaks ended up in things. : (

Thanks!

[Cooker] Suggestions...

2000-04-26 Thread Bill Lea Greenwood

Hey Pixel- I would appreciate that you didn't answer my mails anymore.
Do you really think you know everything?? Many of us are not programmers,
but know a great deal about beta testing, as well as other things in life.
I was under the assumption that Mandrake wanted this all tested, and our
suggestions put forth. If this is not the case, then please let me know and
I will gladly unsub-scribe. I perceive you as an arrogant programmer with
no public skills.

Did you really check out suggestions 1 and 2? The rpmslist doesn't say
which CD the rpms go on. And drakboot doesn't have the MakeBootDisk button
on it (unless I'm blind, in which case my humblest apologies).

I would also suggest someone replace the stars on the progress bar of the
installer with small rectangles no taller than the text. The stars really
cheapen the installer (IMHO), and little colored rectangles would be much
more professional, and would give more room for text and it would make it
look not so crowded.

Again, I would appreciate someone other than a programmer answer my mails.
Someone with some tact, and that will not put-down the humble beta testers,
new or not. I suggest Mandrake appoint one person with these public skills
to act as an intermediary between the programmers and the Cooker list.
Especially for suggestions vs. bugs.

-Bill

=

 1) Would it be possible to divide up the RPMs to the 2 different
directories (RPMS vs. RPMS2) for the two different CDs on all the Cooker
mirror sites? This would be a BIG HELP in keeping them up to date.

the list is (now) in Mandrake/base/rpmslist

 2) A MakeBootDisk button on the DrakConfig control panel would be handy.

there is via drakboot

 3) On the installer: I suggest that on the first section when we are
talking about SCSI, that the first question should be: Do you have any
SCSI
devices then if not, then skip this section completely. If you do then
ask the next question: Do you want to search for (SCSI) devices then
 continue from that point.

it seems to be a good idea. I must be look at what it could break though :-/
