[Cooker] Re: vrwave (CONTRIB ?) and Mesa - kernel vanilla
Hi Francois! RIVA Cards don't need this do they ? Is this patch part of the No you do not need unless you try DMA transfert ? Ok. coming 2.2.17 (vanilla) kernel ? If no, you have to do something about it anyway. It is the patch provided by GLX (newagpgart) now integrated in kernel 2.4 which has been backported to 2.2 used in Cooker, It is necessary for any form of hardware acceleration. Is it only backported by cooker or is there also a kind of "official" backport ? (Like USB and IEEE1394 or the large IDE patch). Oh yes, with the MesaGL library switch the vrwave package still works fine, so we have a compromise here ;-). But I needed to I don't known how to do differently when compiling with the wrapper, as it break 3D acceleration with XFree-4.0.1. Well the old version runs fine with libMesaGL as well that what I wanted to say, at that time I still had Mesa-Devel installed, so I didn't notice the difference. acceleration). But OSMesa is available in the wrapper and is provided by the libGL.so.1.2 provided by XFree86-devel, it should really be better to use it instead (if possible ?). For me this is no problem, but vrwave is now longer developed by the original authors, they put it under GPL and published it in July. I don't know if anyone continues developing it. At least going away from xmesa to osmesa does not seem to be that easy in this case :-( The only information I found was on http://www.iicm.edu/vrwave. I can re-add Mesa-devel (but just for this type of applications), you should link with it and use libMesaGL.so* library instead. For this application I fear this is needed. Principially it works as I have written above (with the -7mdk version of X11 and MesaGL). NB : In your patch, you have used OSMesaCreateVisual which do not exists, so you really have to use xmesa, if it has compiled it should have failed (or permisse CC options ?). Yes, I know it breaks, also OSMesaBuffer does not exists. The original file only includes glx.h but uses all the XMesa stuff. It breaks with 3.3 but this was not to difficult to resolve. I don't know if this can be workaround somehow. The best would be to completely rewrite gejcon.c so it does not use the OS/Xmesa stuff is possible. Else I should patch my kernel for newagpgart if I find the backport patch. Thanks for the info. [Cooker] PHP4.01 and JServ Comments
Ouch... So... how long do you think we need to wait and which packages are needed to be fixed for the PHP4.01 version to be considered stable so that I can put it in the 7.0 and 7.1 Mandrake Servers. I noticed that some mentioned about upgrading the Perl to 5.6 which is not a problem for me. But I want to make sure that the MySQL modules itself along with perl is working before I upgrade those. I might consider making a RPM package but I do not know how to do it in the first place. Re: [Cooker] About CVS initscripts
Just to add some fire... How will tmp clean scripts work? Has anyone cared about this? I just opened a few tarballs and got 200Mb on ~/tmp. And tha's 10% of my disk free space. a few days and I get "partition is full". Before a script cleaned up the stuff every 24 hours on /tmp. So I didn't care. Now I have to think that you have to clean not only /tmp but also a few /home/*/tmp's. In the meantime I would like to note a psychological moment - many users have tmp for storing archives. [Cooker] NIS+ netscape 4.75
Well this is more of a warning for those using NIS+. I just installed the 4.75 tarball for glibc 2.1. What happened: Netscape crashes on every attempt to check uid or user name. This as been some sort of a chronical disease on netscape. Both netscape's, glibc 2.0 2.1, don't work with NIS+ users. These builds either segfault either crash the machines. Yeah, that's right they CRASH a Linux box. The problem is due to the fact that, under certain environment conditions, netscape starts bombing the system by looping several NIS+ calls and not getting with the returns. What solutions may exist? First use libc5 build. It works but it needs some checkups on netscape configs. Right now I don't remember exactly the origin of the feature, but under certain settings, netscape can't send mail. It always opens the 25 port, it does everything to send the mail till the crucial moment of sending the magical ".". At that point it makes a check for uid/username (WHY?). However, if some preferences are on, the thing ignores nis+ and makes a direct read to /etc/passwd, which naturally fails. Second solution. To use netscape without static Motif (netscape-dynMotif of the tarballs). Until now I could only test it with Lesstif libs (I couldn't check OpenMotif until now). Under them, netscape loves to cry wild about several stuff missing. Well, personally I didn't note anything seriously missing. Everything seems to draw more or less well. The only hassle is that a cascade of dialog windows cry about something missing. And it segfaults sometimes Experts may ask. What a interface library has to do with authentication You may laugh but netscape-dynMotif works. Traces are a little more harder to do there (we used strace ltrace) but all processes of getting/sending mail seem to work without a hassle. Besides. I am not the discoverer of this stuff. As far as I know, a year before us (1998) many sysadmins/developers had already noted this situation. And several wrote directly to netscape. Our team here wrote three times, even in bigger detail about this problem. However, since 4.51, this problem stands and it seems that netscape team doesn't make a whistle about it. Well so why this so-long letter? First a warning to all developers/sysadmins/users using NIS+. Second I'm trying to base the problem as many people may not understand how tricky it is (the reasons came out after long hours of tracing the code). Third a requirement. Netscape will probably still stay for a while. So my two duty-free questions: Can you add netscape libc5 build as a add-on? In contribs for example. I would do it if someone clarifies how bureaucracy works and there is some interest on it. Is anyone thinking about using netscape-dynMotif in the future? Has anyone tested ow it works with Lesstif/OpenMotif? Ektanoor
[Cooker] Usparc timeloss problem located
I think that I have stumbled across the problem with the UltraSparc port losing time when turned off. It would seem that the shutdown sequence is imcomplete on my Ultra Creator 1, as it only gets as far as the eprom prompt when shutting down and then gives me a message that says "program terminated" and that's it. If I wnat the machine to power down I have to switch it off on the back and I think that this powers off everything - including the internal clock. The other day I got called away while the machine was shutting down so I didn't get a chance to throw the switch. When I came back several hours later, the OS had shut down but the machine was still running. I rebooted and the time was correct! I know that Solaris RH didn't require me to shut the power off manually and they didn't have a problem with keeping time so I suspect that there's a bug in the shutdown code and that the machine is capable of going into some kind of power off state that keeps the clock running. Any advice on how to proceed? Also, I haven't been seeing any sparc postings lately - or maybe it's just my mail filter is acting up (but I did test it). Tom Korte

I can fix this problem by loging in a s root and editing the /usr/share/config/kdmrc file and changing the line SessionTypes=kde;Gnome;WindowMaker;Enlightenment;Sawmill;BlackBox;AfterStep;Fvwm2;Icewm;Fvwm1;failsafe;default to SessionTypes=kde,Gnome,WindowMaker,Enlightenment,Sawmill,BlackBox,AfterStep,Fvwm2,Icewm,Fvwm1,failsafe,default. After making this change, the login window shows the usual popup menu with one choice of window manager per line and everything works fine. Here's my problem if I reboot the machine the login window is goofed up again until I re-edit the kdmrc file. How do I fix this problem?
[Cooker] Apache suexec
Is anyone else using Apache-suexec? WWSympa, a component of the Sympa mailing list software, requires suexec to function properly. I'm noticing this error in my Apache logs: .. Oi, because of some recent changes in the USB subsystem CUPS didn't autodetect USB ports and printers in the Cooker. I modified the USB backend of CUPS a little bit, so that the autodetection works for both the old and the new situation. So for making a USB printer working under CUPS, do the following: 1.) Edit /etc/sysconfig/usb adding the line "PRINTER=yes". 2.) Activate USB support to be loaded automatically at boot time: chkconfig --add usb 3.) Start USB for the first time: /etc/rc.d/init.d/usb start 4.) Start the CUPS daemon /etc/rc.d/init.d/cups start It is very important that the CUPS daemon is started AFTER USB has been started. 5.) Install your USB printer with the web interface of CUPS as usual. Till

Once again, since I'm a "screen" user, I'm going to mention the fact that "screen" places a kind of lock file (pid.screen_name) file for each screen in ~/tmp. Removing these isn't a good thing. I've been known to have a single screen running for 60-70 days. Maybe we should get "screen" to stick things in /var/lock instead, so it eliminates the problem? In the meantime I would like to note a psychological moment - many users have tmp for storing archives. It is a method coming from old DOS times where many people used directory TMP for temporary storage (TEMP was the swap/drop/trash directory) I always made a download directory back then, and I still do today.. but you're right, I remember a number of people who did it that way. Re: [Cooker] openjade-1.3-7mdk build fails
Hello Reinhard, This has been going on for some time now, and more packages suffer from this. Take a look at the buildoutputs in: http://d10179.dtk.chello.nl/build/cooker/i586/LPR0/ This mail explains why this is going on: Subject:Re: [Cooker] Problems on building gcc-2.95.2-9mdk Date: 13 Aug 2000 17:31:15 +0200 From: Guillaume Cottenceau [EMAIL PROTECTED] Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] CC: [EMAIL PROTECTED] References: 1 Pedro Rosa [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: The src.rpm fails building when linking the libgcj lib. I had this hassle the other day. After many hours of digging, it seems that it comes from.. the "-mcpu=pentiumpro" option given to gcc for C++ code :-((. Try to disable this option and see if it fixes (99.99% sure). We'll see if we definitely remove this option, or we try to find a fix to the compiler. Meanwhile there seems to be a patch concerning libgcj inside the source (on spec it is marked as patch12). However the patch, is in fact, a shell script. Apart from the java section it seems that there are several problems on building the packages. One of them, color-gcc package doesn't build. It drops with the statement: "objdump: ($RPM_BUILD_ROOT)/usr/bin/colorgcc : File format not recognized" This `objdump' stuff is not a failing condition. Try to issue "rpm -bi --short-circuit" and you'll see that it probably misses some files (color-gcc probably, you said it). -- Guillaume Cottenceau -- Distribution Developer for MandrakeSoft http://www.mandrakesoft.com/~gc/ Stefan

Re: [Cooker] File Associations KDE
I hope he is kidding... Anyway, Linux is Free Society. You are not happy - you can go back (to Windows or whatever). By the way, Danny: I, personally, do not think that Windows (Microsoft Windows) is bad. It is good program. Especially Windows 2000. Yes, Win 95/98 crashes - but you always can go to Win NT or better Win 2000. Yes, Win 2000 is heavy program, loading takes a lot of time - but who told that it should load fast? I continue to use Win 98 together with Mandrake Linux on same machine (I have Compaq notebook). And pretty happy with KDE2 Beta - for the first time in my life I see environment which CAN (and I believe, WILL) compete with Microsoft. CHOICE - that's what we always were waiting for. What I dislike most in Microsoft? No, not 3 years from one major update to another. :-) It's understandable - MS is big company and should cash-on on every new product first. No, not $89 for Windows , payable usally every 2 years after minor bug fix. I dislike MS for abandoning PowerPC and MIPS versions of WinNT from development tree. They promised choice (over Intel x86) - and they lied. I still wondering why they support Alpha. Probably, Compaq is continuing paying them for all NT-on-Alpha programmers. I honesly wish that one day Compaq will stop this and pay this money to Linux developers. That's will be real victory on MS. Mandrake is great company, doing excellent job, and let all of us thank Mandrake team for this. THANK YOU!!! Vadim Plessky On Mon, 28 Aug 2000, you wrote: "Danny W. Re: [Cooker] something is going on with perl...
Hi, I am in a similar quandry! Here is a message I wrote yesterday. Fran Parker wrote: I also have uninstalled the cooker mysql and installed the one from the stable current. Still doesn't work. I am just trying to change from .CSV to mysql for the database for Pronto! mail. .CSV is too slow. This has been a nightmare so far for 4 days now. I am at a loss as to what to do about this incompatibility thing. Thanks for anyhelp anyone can give on this. Bambi
Re: [Cooker] perl-mysql (was: mod_php-mysql bad)
This is the same info I sent under another heading call something is going on with perl. Placing here as well to see if anyone knows what is going on. Please see the original message entitled something is going on with perl for Stefan's quandry with perl as well. I replied under that subject with the following: Hi, I am in a similar quandry! Re: [Cooker] Installer
Pixel, A network install from ftp.sunet.se, which seems to have the latest updates, is working OK now. The installer didn't have any trouble getting into DiskDrake. -- Phil Lavigna [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/demos/
RE: [Cooker] Re: Apache suexec
Do you have the apache-suexec package? The file should be like this: -rws--x--x1 root root 9696 ao 24 10:25 /usr/sbin/suexec* Although, I just noticed, it's not -rws--x--x. It's -rwx--x--t ? To answer my own question, changing the permissions fixed the error. Thanks. =) Don Head [[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Linux Mentor, LCP, Network+ [1 314 692-1942] Wave Technologies, Inc. [expert] Still haven't got DGA going with XFree86 4.0.1
I've been trying for awhile to get DGA working with XFree86 4.0.1 (from cooker). The X modules are loaded, and everything else works, but this. [root@ajmitch X11]# dga Xserver driver doesn't support DirectVideo on screen 0 [root@ajmitch X11]# I'm running an i740 agp card, on 2.4.0-test6, but DGA was working with the XFree86 4 server from Mandrake 7.1 (I'm running 6.1, btw). Also, I had the same problems with 2.2.13, so it's not the kernel :) As another example of what comes up, here's what happens when I try to run Railroad Tycoon II demo from loki : [ajmitch@ajmitch rt2_demo]$ ./rt2_demo X Error of failed request: XF86DGANoDirectVideoMode Major opcode of failed request: 137 (XFree86-DGA) Minor opcode of failed request: 2 (XF86DGADirectVideo) Serial number of failed request: 87 Current serial number in output stream: 88 [ajmitch@ajmitch rt2_demo]$ (Sorry about the big attachment, my website didn't want to let me in to upload the XF86Config file) -- Andrew Mitchell Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ICQ:11392490 (ajmitch) # $XFree86: xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/XF86Conf.cpp,v 3.43 1999/12/03 19:17:20 eich Exp $ # # Copyright (c) 1994-1998 by The XFree86 Project, Inc. # # Permission is hereby granted, free of charge, to any person obtaining a # copy of this software and associated documentation files (the "Software"), # to deal in the Software without restriction, including without limitation # the rights to use, copy, modify, merge, publish, distribute, sublicense, # and/or sell copies of the Software, and to permit persons to whom the # Software is furnished to do so, subject to the following conditions: # # The above copyright notice and this permission notice shall be included in # all copies or substantial portions of the Software. # # THE SOFTWARE IS PROVIDED "AS IS", WITHOUT WARRANTY OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR # IMPLIED, INCLUDING BUT NOT LIMITED TO THE WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, # FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE AND NONINFRINGEMENT.
