Re: [Cooker] does mandrake's kernel support VMWARE?
I installed vmware-2.0.3 build 799 tonight on 8.0 final and it seems to work with no problems. I have not created a new virtual machine from scartch, but I do not expect this to be an issue. I did replace the vmnet.tar file with one which contained the vnetInt.h patch already applied before I ran the vmware-config.pl script. regards Dave On Friday 20 April 2001 17:32, you wrote: > I am sorry. [Cooker] 8.0 install reports
Very nice overall, I upgraded from ver 8b3, used iso images - After the install xinetd would not start. I had to reinstall xinetd package, /usr/sbin/xinetd file was missing when querying package, ok after that. - I selected expert mode, all package categories. After install using drakboot selecting Aurora traditional frame buffer would result in a setup with no Aurora, package Aurora-Monitor-Traditional-WsLib was not installed and after installing it, it worked fine. - Again in drakboot, if I manually inserted user root for autologin, X starts up with no apps or window manager of choice, not sure why? I just worked around it using ~/.xinetrc - fs config file did not add unscaled to some font dirs resulting in uglyfied fonts in kde, I guess cause they were not included in the official distro, ( is that a feature?) Other minor details (most probably other oss projects issues, all 8b3 issues as well) - gtv, xmms (smpeg) needs mpegs played in double size for video to display. - In gnome panel applet mixer and mini-commander - graphics don't render right (voodoo3) - Voodoo 3 h/w accel goes slow with E window manager, tested with tuxracer and others. My laptop upgrade is next (Dell Inspiron 3800) which has 7.2 Thank you for the great product, you all deserve a vacation :)

Our installer can install directly from an ISO, may it be on a Linux, Windows, or Reiserfs partition. Please use floppy boot image in "/images/hd.img" and follow instructions on-screen. Please note that this feature has an important limitation: it can install only from the first ISO. Packages from any subsequent ISO's will not be available during install. I think it's findable by going to the linux newsgroups and searching for "2.4" or maybe "patch". Including this (source code included) patch is actually what I meant by Mandrake "supporting" VMWARE. Not to include it, but to make sure that it isn't broken by the kernel upgrade. I know (have read) that VMWARE is also working on their end to make itself compatible, but when possible it's nice to know that a new kernel/distribution install won't break the software that I already have installed, and which is vital to being able to coexist on one computer with someone who needs to use Windows. Not to mention that I would think it a very useful tool for distribution developers who are short on extra computers and time, but still would like to give feedback or contribute in a meaningful way by testing applications or providing support over the phone for multiple versions (since it ought to be able to simulate a computer for use with a cooker install, another for an 8.0 install, and another for a 7.2 install, for example). Yes, I've mentioned this before. The best solution I've found is to use xfstt rather than rely on just X or xfs ! I have a 494 MB /dev/hda1 mounted on / . /usr and /home are mounted on separate partitions. Immediately after installation of Mandrake 8.0 beta 3, about two days ago, the /dev/hda1 was about 33% full. A couple of times since then it has exceeded 99% full. I stopped psacct from starting at bootup because /var/log/pacct got up to 53 MB. I deleted that file. Two other files tend to become monsters: /var/log/httpd/error.log as much as 173.3 MB /var/log/httpd/ssl-engine.log as much as 169.2 MB I've deleted these files a couple of times, but they keep coming back. [Cooker] 8.0 and old version support
Ok, 8.0 is out, everything is wonderfull, we're on cooker, everyone has the latest kernel, latest everything... However, with 8.0 out, a decision has been taken to stop security updates on old versions (7.0 and before). I would like Mandrake people to reconsider strongly this decision. There are people with not-so-recent computers on which an "old" Linux Mandrake is running. I have 2 such computers, running 7.0. They have more than 60 users, a web server, and a lot of non-LM rpms things (scientific applications). Installing a new distribution (upgrading) is never so easy. And I only have 2 computers, what about people with a lot of them ? Please, please, don't push too much for new versions. I know it is not so easy to maintain old distributions, but it is just security bug fixes. You can have one PC with the full RPMS, SRPMS and running each of the old Mandrake versions. You cannot just say "it is provided without waranties". People trust you... And remember Mandrake 7.0 is only from Jan 2000! That's less than a year and a half ago!!! Cheers, -- Xavier

[Cooker] CDRom/CD-RW problems with 8.0 RC1
Hi everybody, I upgraded from LM7.2 to LM8.0RC1 and most went well. There is a problem with my CD drives, though. Everytime I try to mount the CD-RW (/dev/hdc resp. /dev/scd0) it tells me of an i/o error. I can burn CDs though and the -scanbus option from cdrecord shows the drive in its place. My second Cdrom (dev/hdd) tells me it's not a block-oriented device or it also prints out the i/o error, depending on the moment. Automount doesn't seem to get the mounting right, too. I had the same problem with cooker while I was testing it and only from my installations from mid-march on it behaved like LM7.2 -that is, correctly. Now, with RC1 I got the same problem again. I will try the 8.0 final release tonight but it still puzzles me. Did anyone experience the same? I'm using automount and the drives in question are a Samsung SW-408B and a generic cdrom drive on a AMD K6-2 400 on a VT82C586B board. Any help would be greatly appreciated. While I like the idead of the donations, perhaps the better way to go about it is instead of looking for a handout, Be willing to provide support for those companies willing to pay a decent amount for it. - Like mine. We use Mandrake in some parts of our datacenter but because of lack of good support, we are limited on what we can impliment. However, if you want to help edit or write, please send patches against a CVS checkout of max-rpm: cvs -d :pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvs/devel login (no password, just carriage return) cvs -d :pserver:[EMAIL PROTECTED]:/cvs/devel get max-rpm 3) There's doxygen generated rpmlib API docs for rpm-4.1 available online at http://www.rpm.org/rpmapi-4.1 The doco is still pretty meager, but doxygen does a very nice job adding cross references to sources. Almost all of the code from transaction.c down to cpio.c has been rewritten. I will put test packages on ftp.rpm.org as soon as I can figger what is likely to be in the next version of rpm. Re: [Cooker] rebuilding the kernel rpm for a athlon based system...
I did a quick search again (I did one when I ran into the problem)- the difference is major in the way the T-bird's L2 cache is implemented - refer to http://www.trainwrecker.com/Reviews/Tbird/TBirdKA71.htm Many were shocked and annoyed when AMD announced that the "Athlon processor featuring performance-enhancing on-chip L2 cache memory," AKA Thunderbird, had compatibility issues with VIA's KX-133 chipset. The Slot A form factor model would only be officially supported by AMD's own 750 "Irongate" chipset and would be shipped exclusively to OEM's and in limited quantities. VIA would have to address the issue in their upcoming KT-133 chipset, and users intending to upgrade have to "migrate" to the Socket A form factor. .. --- root <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Hm...
