Ok let's add one more item... When adding a rule through the GUI it seems to want to change the source/dest zones away from what the user specifies. I tried adding a rule for NNTP which went from lan -> wan. The gui goes off and changes source and destination zones. I finally got it working by changing the rules manually and manually reloading shorewall. -randy

[Cooker] KDE/GNOME/Sawfish interaction oddity
I have found a strange bug which occurs when I have Konqueror running on my GNOME/Sawfish desktop. Here's how I can reproduce it (100% reproducable): 1. Start GNOME with Sawfish as the WM. 2. Make some floating and sliding GNOME Panels, with the stacking level set to 'Above' to place them above all Sawfish windows. 3. Open Konqueror in file manager mode, in a maximised window. 4. Right-click a file in Konq and select 'Properties...'. The file properties will be displayed in a pop-up window. 5. Leaving the Properties window open, switch to another viewport. 6. Switch back to the viewport where Konq is. For me, the result is that my panels lose their 'Above' stacking status, meaning that I cannot access them while the Konqueror (or any other) window is maximised. The only apparent solution to this seems to be to restart Sawfish (available from the desktop middle-click menu). Does anyone have any ideas on this? -- Sridhar Dhanapalan Windows 2000, Users Zilch.

[Cooker] Fix for Canon BJC 6000 (gimp-print) in Cooker?
Hi! Some days ago gimp-print 4.2.1pre3 was released. According to the ChangeLog it includes a fix for the scaling problem with Canon printers. Is this fix included in Cooker packages? I didn't see it in the ChangeLog of the Cooker RPMs yet. The fix is very urgent. It makes printing unusable for Canon users. It should be possible to isolate the fix and put it in the 4.2.0 Cooker package as it probably not acceptable to put a pre-release into Cooker just before a release Alexander

When you try access device via special file and now driver for the requested major number has been registered and autoloading is enabled in kernel (default in Mandrake) kernel tries to modprobe {char,block}-major-N. Well I'm further along this time! Here's some comments and issues. 1. httpd is still selected as a default started service. 2. You can't login to the admin interface without clearing shorewall first. 3. Can it get the time settings from system config like it does with the ethernet and other networking configs. 4. Shouldn't it install the caching name server by default since you can configure it? 5. In the network configuration if a network is set to a private net address could it automatically tag that one as LAN and the other interface ( if a 2 interface machine ) set to LAN. I've got 2 issues at the moment... 1. It's not allowing connections from inside to the caching DNS server. I can directly contact my ISP's server, but not my internal one. Odd. I'm guessing there is another rule needed? 2. Does any of the filtering in squidGuard work? It doesn't seem to catch anyting on either keyword or url. -randy'

[Cooker] Optional ALSA Support for SB Live!
Hello everyone, As I mentioned here about a month ago, right now Harddrake and also the Mandrake Install Program default to using OSS Lite/Kernel drivers for SB Live! cards. This driver is okay, but lacks MIDI synth support. In Mandrake 8.1 rerunning Harddrake post-setup would switch over to ALSA (which supports MIDI synth), however in 8.2 the only way to get ALSA support is to manually edit the modules.conf file. This would be disasterous for someone who isn't familar with modules.conf, but had been instructed on the mandrake-expert/newbie lists (as many had been) to simply rerun Harddrake on the sound card to get ALSA (and hence MIDI synth support). I've been talking with a MDK developer (Danny Tholen) who is involved with Harddrake, and he said it may be possible to add an option to Harddrake to allow the user to choose between OSS/Lite and ALSA. Due to the fact that the ALSA driver is very stable, and offers additional features, I would like to suggest that this option be added to Mandrake 8.2 final. As I originally noted using ALSA as default would be best IMO, since it offers MIDI synth support, however, if that is not possible, at least allowing a way for a user to easily switch to ALSA would be a very good alternative. [Cooker] Problems with the setup of the ESS Maestro 2E Sound Card
Hi, I'm going to quickly gain the reputation of a guy that likes to complain about sound card setups, but hey, what can I say? :-) Here is the problem I noticed. I tried installing Mandrake 8.2 RC1 on my laptop, after removing Mandrake 8.1 (it was a new install, not in upgrade). In Mandrake 8.1, the ESS Maestro 2E sound card included in my Dell Inspiron 5000e worked great, however there are some problems with it in 8.2 RC1. It seems that the Maestro 2E uses ALSA (yay!), which is really great. However, the default setup does not setup OSS Emulation, thus meaning many - if not most - Linux multimedia apps, including XMMS, simply do not work. Now, I plan on adding OSS Emulation to modules.conf myself but this could be a very serious problem if this is not done automatically, IMO. Further more any attempt to redetect the card in Harddrake fails, saying the card can not be detected (!). Apparently insmod thinks that the card does not exist when chosen from the list of Cards (harddrake correctly highlights the right card). The Maestro 2E is a seemingly very popular sound card for notebooks, and works well in Linux, however with the changes in Mandrake 8.2 RC1 it is relegated to a nearly useless card for most intents and purposes for your average user. [Cooker] Odd Install Errors Begin in RC1
Hi everyone, I downloaded and burned a copy of MDK 8.2 RC1 today, and overall the small glimpse I've had of it thus far has impressed me - however it was not without issues. During the installation, I was prompted that several packages could not be installed, and it asked if I wished to continue. Here are the packages that would not install: - Termcap - TCL - TCSH - Gurpmi - ncftp Any ideas what might have caused those errors? Thanks, Tim -- Timothy R. [Cooker] Broken fonts...
Just installed RC1. Saw this problem in beta 4, but saw some discussion at the time about it and didn't think much of it until I notice that it is still broken. I'm using GNOME as my window manager of choice. My screen resolution is 1024x768x24bit. I then install my Windows fonts with DrakFont. When I go to view a website in Galeon that has Verdana on it (in this case it's Verdana 9pt) the font it displays looks HORRIBLE. It's *bold* for some bizarre reason, and it's all blotchy as if the result of some inept attempt at anti-aliasing. All I want is for my Verdana TTF font to look NORMAL. That meaning the way it looks in every other occasion (in Windows, Mandrake 8.1, etc). Is there something I can do? This is something that should be fixed ASAP IMHO. Here is a link to a screenshot displaying the various ugliness that these fonts are displaying: http://www.myhockeypool.ca/verdana9pt.png http://www.myhockeypool.ca/verdana-drakfont.png Mike

[Cooker] UltraDMA 100 and beta 4 upgrade
Hardware: ASUS A7V133 Motherboard with Athlon 800, 512mb memory hda = 10gb UDMA/66 HD with some other OS hdb = 8.4gb UDMA/66 HD Ext2 formatted, empty. hde = 30gb UDMA/100 with Mandrake 8.1 installed. Root directory on hde5. Hda and hdb are on the primary IDE connector. Hde is on the primary Ultra ATA 100 connector. Problem: When attempting to upgrade to beta 4, install fails because it can't locate the root directory. I originally got Linux installed on this drive by putting it on one of the IDE connectors, moving it to the ATA 100 after installation and changing the appropriate lilo and /etc/fstab parameters. I would rather not have to do that for an upgrade. -- Gary Walsh Kitchener, Ontario, Canada [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://homepages.dsl.ca/~gwalsh/

[Cooker] 8.2RC1 install
Clean install saving only /home and /home/safe. 800 Duron 444MB ram Radeon 32MB DDR DVD,CD-rw,USB-Zip,Linksys 10/100,SBLive,Logitech Optical USB MousemanWheel. I have noticed with other installs but had never thought to mention. During package selection I choose pkg A and pkgs B and C are added as requires. If I then unselect and choose not to install pkg A, pkgs B and C are Still installed. Printer connected locally through an auto switch can not be set-up during installation. It gives a can't initialize lp0 error, after install setup is no problem. During X configuration, I was under the impression that both the ati2 and the ati.old drivers were included but no choice is given. Problem-if the More option is selected the configuration will complete even if No Resolution is chosen. Installation aftermath. Tested all drives, network, mcc, and various other apps. All passed with no problems. The only problem was the MouseMan Wheel. Had set-up and tested during installation as USB wheel mouse but now the wheel would not function. Checked XF86Conf-4 and found the the Chord Middle option was # out. Removed the # and wheel now functions properly. Not to sound too pleased but at the RC1 stage 8.2 is far better and more bug free than either 8.0 or 8.1 as finals. Charles

[Cooker] ALSA problem.....
Ok I have removed all the changes I made from everything except modules.conf. The problem seems to be in the alsa scripts in /etc/rc.d/init.d and in /usr/share/alsa/alsa-utils. If I do a modprobe snd-card-emu10k1 it loads the drivers and creates the /proc/asound and /dev/snd and /dev/sound.
