Well, I like your logic, it is structured like a computer program with no
forks.
But the philosopher, Georg Henrik von Wright, discussed in his analysis of the
word 'idiot', that it did come from old Greece and signified a person that
did not speak the greek language. So everything he said was clear nonsence.
To day 'idiot' may indicate a person that do things that are of no sence to a
viewer. So it is possible to argue that the listener has changed the
original logic of the word to a class of activities of a foreigner that has
no sence to the listener.
Thus my '' around 'communistic' was to signify that in a communistic group it
is possible to have a view of 'the other people', as communism is for
everyone, and to declare an idea or formula for 'the other people', i.e. to
dictate or signify what is best for them.

I'd be amazed if the spec file has not changed at all for 2.4

Thank you Ben.

Then we can consider you as the new official maintainer for subversion in
mandrake?. Warly, could you please reassign this package to Ben?

I have too many packages (hundreds) to maintain on my own, I need to spread
the load..., and in the end hopefully get rid of the more time consuming and
complicated ones...

BTW. Would you consider adopting the new "rapidsvn" package too? (I hate
GUI:s, but this one could make people start using subversion?)

Also..., I could make a list of other packages I want to "give away" if people
would be interested in such a thing...

Cheers.

Enough. End of this subthread.

Further political discussions should be carried on political discussion
forums or groups, not in Mandrake cooker list, where people need to
concentrate on the release of MDK 9.2.

[Cooker] NTFS and Unicode

2003-09-05 Thread Helge Hielscher
Hello,

Since I cant use bugzilla (much too slow here), I try my luck in the
mailinglist.

The problem is, that I cant see folders and files from my (XP)NTFS
partition that contain cyrillic characters.

The Line in /etc/fstab wasnt modified after installation and looks like
/dev/hda1 /mnt/windows ntfs ro,umask=0 0 0

And I get errors like:
Sep 6 01:19:26 localhost kernel: NTFS-fs error (device 03:01):
ntfs_ucstonls(): Unicode name contains characters that cannot be converted
to character set iso8859-1.

But all my locales were set to UTF-8 during installation and still are.

Helge

ye, and this means that a 9.1 server is still copatible with a 9.1

yes, this is clearly stated in the FAQ :

The repository db schema is stable now and should only undergo one more
major change before 1.0. These migrations have happened before, and we
already have dump/load utilities available to aid you in the migration.

> However, because of this policy and

i didn't say that people should not be encouraged to do this, but, if we
can help them, then we should.

I think that having a solution is better than having nothing.
If it can help 50% of people, it is better than nothing.
And, having a solution does not prevent us to warn people.
In fact, you can patch svnadmin to display the messages if you want. or
wrap it in a shell script that does everything.

> Doing the dump before an upgrade and a load after

dozen of old svnadmin. Do you really think that subversion people are
insane ?
They use their own software, and they will not break it every month.

The project changed only once in a way that break everything since the
beginning, in 2 years.

we will need a dozen of svnadmin in 24 years, if they keep the same rate
of breakage. I guess that subversion will be stable in 2 years, so,
unless they break for fun, we will never have dozen of old binary.
Please stop exagerating in order to convince people.

i do not suggest to have it for years, only to help the upgrade from the
current mandrake release, ie 9.1.

> IMHO the 0.27
> svnadmin should be removed from the package. I understand it helped
> you get out of a sticky situation, but having it implies that we'll
> provide that sort of thing in the future.

yes, it helped me. and it should not help other people ?
what will be the avantage of not helping people ?

forcing them to learn the hard way and to lose time, because it will be
good for them.
what will people learn with this ?

that they should not use subversion, because they break thing ?

they should not use mandrake because someone didn't want to ship a
simple solution ?

openldap2.1 changed the way it handle the schema, but, buchan tried to
provides some migration script. I am sure it will help lot of people.
This is *our* job to provide smooth upgrade.

> The problem is they can choose to change the schema anytime they
> want. Do we carry a svnadmin version for every schema version?

I do not think that subversion project is going to change schema every
month. This break too much thing for being done.

I do not say we should ensure a upgrade from any release to any release.
but from the 9.1 to 9.2.

> I didn't intend it to be the only message. Just an extra notice...
> I figure most people using subversion as a server are likely to be
> using urpmi not rpmdrake...

even if they do not use rpmdrake, they can miss the message.
and what is the message good for ?
I upgrade subversion, and it will say :

"oh, you should have dumped before upgrading, sorry, that's too bad."
and what will i do ?

i will recompile from source.

People will not blame mandrake for the error, but, if we provides them
with a solution, they will appreciate the effort. Now, of course, you
can do nothing. Maybe they will switch to a distro that care for them
and try to make their life easier.

And, if we provides this only for the release, we can drop it once
cooker is unfrozen, if you think it would take too much time to
maintain it. i just want to ensure that people using subversion will
have a easier path for upgrading.

Juan, are we going to get 2.4.23pre2 ? Or at least Jeff Garzik's patches
implementing MII support for a lot of PCMCIA NICs? With ifplugd in the
distro, and if aiming for good laptop support, this would be really nice
(speaking as someone who has a PCMCIA card currently unsupported by
ifplugd ...)

i was wondering whey don't we marge all 4 apps of urpmi in to 1 with a gui that
provide the following

- all available features are integrated in to one gui
- the resualt of the searched name "of the rpm" should show in the detail if
installed or not.

- in the top bar beside view and file we can have "preferences" or configuration
entry...in this will give a menu to update, add and remove downloading source such as
plf,contrib ..etc.

i don't know if i was clear or not but the bottom line is way not marge all 4 apps "
add, remove etc" in to one and make it nice gui even better than synaptic

whey not reorganize the k menu

all applications " e.g. multimedia, office, games" under one entry such as

configuration remain in its own

remove redundant entries such as the one in configuration

the kde control center or the kde entry " same applies for many other applications.

hope i was clear.

Well, it actually means the package has been libified, to follow the

No, not entirely, but it is trivial to pull the spec file (and a few
other files) for a specific release from CVS.

The same here, but with RC1. Even the standalone "drakwizard" does not
work as it should: most of the strings are not even displayed in the

I've included the PCMCIA section in my version of the page, adding a short
explanation about why the manfid could/should be included in a commented
line.

http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/twiki/bin/view/Main/HardwareHowTo

I've also added corrections per Thierry's cooker e-mail (as well as a couple
of my own) to the things that I'd added yesterday.

While doing my initial entry yesterday, I had already added a series of
steps in the PCI section about creating a patch. I wasn't quite sure I'd
understood Thierry's message with the proper way to create a patch. Would
someone care to enlighten me, or even just go ahead make the corrections to
the page itself?

Buchan, how would you like to do things? My formatting is quite different
than yours. Would you prefer to change the links on the home and HowTo pages
so that they point to yours instead of mine (in which case, it should become
a subtopic of HowTo)? Or would you rather make changes to mine to bring it
into line with what you wanted?

Ah, the dangers of anarchic editing... :)

You're still making the mistake you made originally, which is to assume
that all features of the USSR and China are, ipso facto, features of
Communism. To make Han's objection more explicit, just as not all

When installing MDK, it correctly detects an Ati Utah
Mach64. But then, further down the list, there is also a
Rage LT Pro entity in the list. You are right, they ought
to work both.

So I thought, that if it autodetects the card, marks it
Mach64 utah and there is a more meaningful ATI Rage LT Pro
entry in the list, why not make the detection result match
exactly with the card detected? Most users can identify
their card by (marketing) name than the included chip
version. Mach64-s can differ quite a lot...

Yes, but it there are other things that should be fixed first:

- -if the user only enters one hostname, it should be hostname,
dhcp_hostname, and IMHO tmdns.conf sohuld not be touch.

- -in expert mode, the user should be able to override dhcp hostname, yet

Well, it worked on 9.1, depending on hardware and settings. Are you
using ACPI? What happens when you run 'pmsuspend'? What hardware?

In drakconnect see : configure hostname

ok it is not obvious and should really move elsewhere or the name be
changed and other pb you can specify only one DNS

[Cooker] [BUG #5284] Konqueror destroying session when closing child window

2003-09-05 Thread FACORAT Fabrice
I create a web application with PHP/PostgreSQL and I'm using PHP session
handling. Sometimes I may have child windows/popup opened. When I close
them ( from title bar or thanks to the javascript control close() ),
konqueror destroy my session. This was not the case before and epiphany
work without problem. Of course I don't touch the code of my php site.
So the issues seems to come from Konqueror.
That's really annoying as my app becomes unusable under Konqueror
because each time you close a child window/popup you have to log in
again.

[Cooker] odd urpmi problem

2003-09-05 Thread Adam Williamson
Had an odd problem with urpmi recently, is anyone else seeing this? On
both my systems, it seemingly simply will not check for hdlist for plf
from the remote source. If I do an urpmi.update -a, this is what I see
(oh, probably unrelated, but note that this is WAY slower than it used
to be - it takes ages to get through checking for cooker and contrib
hdlists, for some reason, the whole process takes about three minutes):

[EMAIL PROTECTED] radiohead]# urpmi.update -a
retrieving source hdlist (or synthesis) of "cooker"...
...retrieving done
examining synthesis file [/var/cache/urpmi/partial/hdlist.cooker.cz]
retrieving source hdlist (or synthesis) of "contrib"...

found 0 headers in cache
removing 0 obsolete headers in cache
write config file [/etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg]
[EMAIL PROTECTED] radiohead]#

Note that it checks for a cooker hdlist and sees that it's up to date,
finds a newer contrib hdlist and downloads it, but for plf
does...nothing at all to check for a new hdlist. If I try with just
urpmi.update plf, I get this:

[EMAIL PROTECTED] radiohead]# urpmi.update plf
examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.cooker.cz]
examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.contrib.cz]
examining MD5SUM file
examining synthesis file [/var/lib/urpmi/synthesis.hdlist.plf.cz]
[EMAIL PROTECTED] radiohead]#

With a long pause between the examination of the contrib synthesis and
"examining MD5SUM file". Again, no attempt at all to check for or
download a new hdlist. I can't see anything different about the plf
source in urpmi.cfg, from the other two sources.

You might want to try my new package of the fresh 4.82 release from

You can also try and lobby for it's inclusion in 9.2.

if your first[1] sound card is managed by ALSA, then alsa-utils get
installed.

There are a lot of kernels available to install. I have 11 uf I do

2- kernel-enterprise-2.4.22.5mdk-1-1mdk.i586
3- kernel-i686-up-4GB-2.4.22.5mdk-1-1mdk.i586

I wonder what are the differences between these kernels? Maybe somone
could add some HowTo to Mandrake Wiki about this.

The description of the card should help on this, we have not one card for each
description, maybe adding description more visible would help.

It could be normal, urpmi.update now check with md5sum of file downloaded and
file present. In this case, it check MD5SUM file (distant) with saved md5sum of
the file to download to check if they are identical.

To force download, use -f --no-md5sum as -f is needed to avoid timestamps and
size checking.

you've two options

- without installing:
  o "service alsa stop"
  o rm -f /etc/.aumixrc /etc/asound.state
(or "for i in /etc/.aumixrc /etc/asound.state; do mv ${i}{,.mine};done")
  o service sound start
- doing an install (not an update)

Juan, just for your info, in case you haven't looked at them,
my current patchset against 2.4.22-3mdk:
http://www.iki.fi/tmb/Cooker/2.4.22-3.tmb.2mdk_patches.tar.bz2

It has:
MC25_mod_dvb.desc
- corrects old outdated info about mod_dvb

MC25_mod_dvb-1.0.0cvs.tar
- mod_dvb 1.0.0 with updates/fixes from cvs
- we really need to use their new makefiles, since
they are using linking / relinking to get it done, and
the way I have them now they are confirmed to work,
even if they are partly uggly...
I'll clean them up better later...

MC27_atmelwlan_2.1.2.2.tar
- from this I have only removed the unneeded file:
  3rdparty/atmelwlan/pcmf502_revd/.Makefile.swp
wich also breaks the possibility to copy kernel-source
  without beeing root...

MC39_acx100-0.1h.tar
- update acx100 to 0.1h since the previous version _is_buggy

ZT01_powernow_k7_fix.patch
- fixes a bug in powenow-k7 code due to a simple typo...

ZT02_build_sis_char.patch
- adds missing Config.in/Makefile info to build sis char support

ZT05_alsa_core_seq_Makefile_fix.patch
ZT06_alsa_master_Makefile_fix.patch
- theese two fixes some duplicates in the makefiles,
   and adds some missing ones...

ZT08_sound_ali5455_0.03ac.patch
- updates ali5455 to 0.03ac

ZT10_usb_scanner_0.4.14.patch
- updates usb scanner database to 0.4.14

 ZT11_usb_serial_add_ids.patch
- adds more ids to support visor/garmin,
   edgeport, and ftdi_sio...

ZT12_usb_storage_unusual_devs.patch
ZT13_missing_unusual_dev_defs.patch
- adds support for more cameras, cd's, and memorysticks..

ZT16_supermount-ng_1.2.8-1.2.9.patch
- this one upgrades supermount-ng to 1.2.9, but you have
to remove the add init.h fix, since it's already fixed AFAIK..

I (John! :) had finished initial versions of GDM themes, as promised, late
on Tuesday (France time). I sent personal messages to Brant and Tim, but
haven't gotten a reply yet. I hesitate posting them before they give
approval (also, I needed Brant to help with the metallic background because
I don't have Photoshop and the required filters).

Brant, Tim? Let me know by e-mailing me directly, when you get a chance. I
have a couple of very small tweaks that I want to make, but I planned on
holding off until I heard from each of you. Also, there were a couple of
other questions I had posed in my messages.

Also, I had posted a decidedly unsexy but important question to the list,
without any replies: Who gets listed in the GDM copyright message? Images
are by Brant and Tim, but icons by Mdk. Not having a copyright isn't really
an option, because the GDM selector always displays that entry even if it's
empty.

Anyone? Anyone? Ferris?

Well as each usb adsl modem uses its own microcode it's quite hopeless

Aha, thanks. So why does this not happen with cooker and contrib
sources? No MD5 to compare?

Okay, just tried with --no-md5sum and it decided plf was current, so
sounds like that's it. However, it seems the md5sum stage is responsible
for the slowdown - the whole thing is a LOT faster with -a --no-md5sum
than with just -a. Any idea why it takes so long?

Okay, done for my desktop. This is how settings wind up, with
snd-intel8x0 driver:

master 65, master mono 65, two weird 3d control options 25 and 25, pcm
65, surround 65, center 100, lfe 65, line 65, cd 65, mic 65 and set as
recording device, video 65, phone 65, iec958 0 (whatever the heck that
is), iec958 input monitor 0 (ditto), pc speaker 25, aux 65, capture 25
and a bunch of other weird ones set to zero and unmuted. So basically it
looks like it's working. With these settings sound is audible but not
perfectly tuned, but that's understandable as using nforce2 audio with
the snd-intel8x0 audio is really freaking odd, some settings do very
bizarre things I haven't really worked out yet (I think something to do
with surround sound) and getting good sound is a matter of
trial-and-error tinkering. Hopefully ALSA will manage to make the
options more sane in future...

Good idea. I'll start a rough page with what (little) I know at:
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/twiki/bin/view/Main/MdkKernel92

Do people think it should be made into a non-release specific page? I
started with the "92" suffix because I figured some kernel variations made
fade out (when 2.6 comes into itss own) or have changes in goals
(potentially Thomas's if he ever gets an itch to focus on a particular type
of patch).

1) kernel 2.4.21-6 on cooker system:
digicam is recognized regulary. there is only one problem: when i want to delete
images in GTKam i get an error message:
"Could not delete file 'Image001.jpg' in folder '/' ".
so i have to delete it on the cam which is not a real problem.

2) kernel 2.4.22-4 on MDK 9.1:
digicam is not recognized by any program.

so i guess the problem is the kernel, except of the error message: "Could not
delete file 'Image001.jpg' in folder '/' ", which could be because of libgphoto2.

the kde Galaxy these looks incomplete as of 9.1. This is just an example.

I think this is due to a missing %{alternative_major} in the update-alternatives
in the preun script of 2.2.8a-9mdk, which was fixed by 2.2.8a-10mdk. See:
http://cvs.mandrakesoft.com/cgi-bin/cvsweb.cgi/SPECS/samba/samba.spec.diff?r1=1.135&r2=1.134&f=h
(line 1369).

Please note that %preun/%postun scripts show the bugs in *previous* packages ...

I did ask people not to file bugs relating to alternatives between -9mdk and
-11mdk ...

Please reopen if -11mdk doesn't fix this (you can test by 'rpm -Uvh --force
samba-client-2.2.8a-11mdk.i586.rpm').

Okay, it's up and ready for proofreading (and for being torn apart! :):
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/twiki/bin/view/Main/MdkKernel92

I may be a bit off on some things, so anyone who wants, feel free to correct
the page!

Note that I removed minor release numbers in titles. I show them in
examples, and then explain the parts. This should help avoid premature aging
of the information as well as teach people how to decipher release numbers
on their own.

Also, I didn't put in anything for the 2.5/.6 kernel branch, but people are
welcome to do so. Hopefully my template helps out with that.

Great, if you could not find it either I am not that stupid!
I was currently putting printks all over the place, but I suspected swsusp

[Cooker] [Bug 4924] [kernel] via-rhine deadlocks kernel 2.4.22.1 with acpi enabled

2003-09-05 Thread [gsl]

--- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-05-09 12:55 ---
I've the same problem on my notebook, an Acer Aspire 1310XV.
When running with my old kernel, 2.4.22.0.6(with a patch for the powernow-k7
module) i boots just fine. But all the other more recent kernels i've tried, my
computer hangs when loading the via-rhine module.

Here's what i get with the old kernel:
via-rhine.c:v1.10-LK1.1.19 July-12-2003 Written by Donald Becker
  http://www.scyld.com/network/via-rhine.html
eth0: VIA VT6102 Rhine-II at 0xf0008000, 00:c0:9f:24:67:8b, IRQ 11.
eth0: MII PHY found at address 1, status 0x7829 advertising 01e1 Link 45e1.

And here's what i get with one of the new kernels(2.4.22-0.8 i think):
via-rhine.c:v1.10-LK1.1.19 July-12-2003 Written by Donald Becker
  http://www.scyld.com/network/via-rhine.html
eth0: VIA VT6102 Rhine-II at 0xe200, 00:c0:9f:24:67:8b, IRQ 10.
eth0: MII PHY found at address 1, status 0x782d advertising 01e1 Link 45e1.
eth0: via_rhine_open() irq 10.
eth0: Reset succesed.
eth0: setting full-duplex based on MII #1 link partner capability of 45e1.
eth0: Done via_rhine_open(), status 0c1a MII status: 782d
eth0: VIA Rhine monitor tick, status .

Running without acpi is not an option, since its a notebook.

I've been running 9.2b2 plus kernel 2.4.21.6mdk on a VIA EPIA M1N (C3,
Nehemiah) motherboard for a week or so, using the integrated via-rhine ethernet
just fine.

I just upgraded to 2.4.22.1, and as soon as the init scripts brought up eth0,
the system hung solid (dead even to magic sysreq keys).

I rebooted in the old kernel, removed ifcfg-eth0 to disable ethernet startup,
and rebooted in 2.4.22.1 again.

Everything ran fine - dmesg showed the via being detected etc. I did a (manual)
ifconfig eth0 x.x.x.x, which seemed OK, and then I did another ifconfig to
correct the netmask and broadcast and about 1-2 seconds later, the system was
hung again.

I don't think it was setting up the interface that killed it, but more probably
the actual transmission or reception of a packet. The dmesg showed the MII
negotiating ok in the first step, but nothing after that.
(eth0: Setting full-duplex based on MII #1 link partner capability of 45e1.)

2.4.21-6 shows this as:

via-rhine.c:v1.10-LK1.1.17 March-1-2003 Written by Donald Becker
  http://www.scyld.com/network/via-rhine.html
eth0: VIA VT6102 Rhine-II at 0xec00, 00:40:63:d3:5b:f9, IRQ 11.
eth0: MII PHY found at address 1, status 0x786d advertising 05e1 Link 45e1.

Without sysreq, I can't get a trace of where it's stuck. Is there any other easy
way to get more debug info on this?

Hope it's an easily fixed, as I'm looking forward to 9.2 final on this little box...

Cheers
Cris

What's the interest of providing so much different builds of the same kernel ?
Someone with real needs for optimisations such as i686, smp or highmem support
is likely to rebuild it anyway.

In Kbabel Catalog Manager you set base PO and POT directories that the app uses

delete or add some PO or POT file in this directory structure then KBabel
Catalog Manager freezes or hangs and you have to kill it and restart it to use

Deleting pictures with gphoto2 is not possible for all camera models. So it is
possible that on yours gphoto2 can only download but not delete.

But your kernel tests show that it is the kernel which prevents your camera from
working with the Cooker.
