[Cooker] Password hash 8.1->9.1/2
I'm still planning to transfer all the stuff from my unsupported 8.1 machine to my 9.1 (to be 9.2 when final) machine. The question I have seems likely to be well within the knowledge of this group: Has the method of hashing passwords changed between these versions or can I expect to take the passwd, passwd-, shadow, shadow-, group, group-, gshadow, and gshadow- (any I missed?) files from the 8.1 system to the 9.1/2 system and still expect all the passwords to be the same and recognized? If not... any suggestions/migration apps? Thanks!

[Cooker] [Bug 5991] [drakxtools] Drakconnect sets something wrong, kde slow opening windows.
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5991 --- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-07-10 01:28 --- But, the question here is what the desired behaviour is. -Does the user want the hostname provided by the DHCP server? If so, then tmdns can solve this problem (well, I am not convinced tmdns is the right solution for anything, but it seems to be preferred by drakconnect), as long as the hostname the user entered for zeroconf name is *not* set manually in tmdns.conf -Does the user want the hostname they set when running drakconnect? If so, then tmdns can solve this (to a certain extent, it's still not the snappiest way of discovering your own IP address ...), as long as the name tmdns claims is the same as the hostname. So, in both cases, tmdns.conf should *not* have the hostname hardcoded, since in the first case it is harmful, and in the second case it is redundant (since if it is not set, tmdns will use `hostname`). The major problem here though IMHO is setting the hostname in tmdns.conf, since in this scenario tmdns *could* have helped if it's config file modified by drakconnect. Anyway, I think we need documentation on how drakconnect should work, otherwise it's almost impossible to tell bugs from features ... -- Configure bugmail: http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is. --- Reminder: --- assigned_to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] status: UNCONFIRMED creation_date: description: Hello. http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5991 --- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-06-10 22:35 --- Thierry, this boils down to the question of how should one assign the host name to a machine that's on a dhcp on a private network, and still manage to avoid the slowdown in KDE. Of course, just like in bug 4227, initscripts/drakconnect set the host name to be the same as the host-name field provided in the lease, but the difference is that in this case we can't solve the problem by doing a reverse lookup on the IP. fixed-address 192.168.1.33; option host-name "dhcppc0"; My recommendation is that this bug be reopened and that drakconnect get the functionality that is needed to solve this problem. [Cooker] [Bug 5784] [xscreensaver] Screenlocking does not work if SXreensaver is disapled
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5784 --- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-06-10 20:46 --- Please do not distribute that patch. You misunderstand the purpose of that option -- it tells xscreensaver to do *nothing* (e.g., when watching a DVD, don't touch the screen.) It should *not* lock in that mode, because that would interfere with movie playing or whatever. "Blank Only" and the other modes *do* lock. Re: [Cooker] OpenOffice has been released
Unfortunately, OOo 1.1 still has several bugs, not the least of which is that it still mangles the occassional Excel spreadsheet in a manner similar to OOo 1.0.2. I had to revert to OOo 1.0.3.1 at work to interoperate with the Excel users. Thomas Spuhler wrote: What are you waiting for to release the distro. If it's a RC then that will be the first thing everybody notices and will relate it to a second class distro. There have been some discussion previously about this, see http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/twiki/bin/view/Main/PackagingTask#Web_applications for kind of synthesis. The point was to use /var/www/html/%{name} for every application, and to use FHS compliant location for non-web files. If you have a configuration directory for anthill, it seems for me more logical to use /etc/anthill for it than /var/www/anthill/etc, for instance. [Cooker] [Bug 5991] [drakxtools] Drakconnect sets something wrong, kde slow opening windows.
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=5991 --- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-06-10 18:10 --- Thierry, I am not convinced this is an invalid bug. The description looks a little bit like http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=4227 In bug 4227, I show that despite what Damien claims, it's not sufficient to have NEEDHOSTNAME=yes to get a hostname through reverse IP lookup. The option assign/do not assign host name should be split into 3 options: 1) Assign host name from a lookup of the assigned DHCP address. 2) Assign host name to be the host name provided in the DHCP lease 2.1) use 1) if the DHCP lease does not provide a host name. 2.2) Do not set host name if the DHCP lease does not provide a host name. 3) Do not modify host name. To the original bug submitter: Can you please provide output of the following 3 commands: ls -l /var/lib/dhcp/dhc*leases cat /var/lib/dhcp/dhc*leases hostname This would suffice for me to see whether this is indeed a duplicate of bug 4227 or not. -- Configure bugmail: http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is. --- Reminder: --- assigned_to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] status: RESOLVED creation_date: description: Hello. I have a router and I use drakconnect to set up my adsl connection with dhcp. THE PROBLEM: Drakconnect apparently sets up something wrong, since kde windows take about 5 seconds to open, and gnome complains that /etc/hosts is wrong. On the other hand, if I choose a static ip assignment and manual DNS assignment (as opposed to dhcp), windows open instantly. The difference is huge. POSSIBLE REASONS: I'm no expert, but I am going to report what others told me. :-) 1) Some kde developer told me it must be a problem not in dhcp, but in dns. unfortunately, drakconnect doesn't allow me to specify dns if I choose dhcp. 2) Someone else told me that the hostname does not resolve because the /etc/hosts file produced by drakconnect is broken, and I should manually specify a fully qualified hostname in /etc/hosts, together with dhcp. He told me that dhcp allows the hostname to be specified OR assigned automatically. But it seems to me that drakconnect does not allow a hostname to be specified with dhcp. Maybe this is the problem. I hope I' ve been of help. cheers!

They offer rpms for mdk-9.1 and rh8 and 9 and will probably offer them for mdk-9.2, but look at the spec they use. It does not even build the damn language files. There are always avenues avaiable for those who wish to upgrade apps beyond that which is included in the distro. Either building it themselves from source, or by acquiring it elsewhere from others. But do not expect it to be added as an update to an already committed distros release. Hell, if anyone wants/needs gaim-0.70 that much they are more than welcome to dl the 9.2/Cooker rpms from my site. BTW, they Do include the language files and are built to mdk specifications. I hope I' ve been of help. cheers!

Well, you have to "register" into a transport (more correct in Jabber terminology) - that means to fill in a UIN/password for ICQ and the like. No need to set up any gateways though :) Unless you want to run your own Jabber server, that's it. I used Yahoo! transport at amessage.info myself, but the transport is pretty flaky (I think it is a general property of this transport, not something amessage.info specific) - crashes often, likes to mangle the buddy lists etc. I didn't use that gateway for cca 6 month, so perhaps it is more stable now. [Cooker] [Bug 6065] [evolution] mails with jpeg attachments make evolution _very_ slow
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=6065 --- Additional Comments From [EMAIL PROTECTED] 2003-06-10 10:51 --- I've just tested with a 700Kb jpeg on an "old" PIII 450 and it displayed the image instantly. Could you attach one of the "slow to display" message here to see if I can reproduce the problem ? -- Configure bugmail: http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is. --- Reminder: --- assigned_to: [EMAIL PROTECTED] status: UNCONFIRMED creation_date: description: quite often I get mails that have jpegs attached. Unfortunately evolution becomes _very very_ slow when dealing with those mails. Just tried it with one 600K jpg that I mailed to myself. It sends out quickly, but when reviewing the mail in the "Sent" folder, evolution eats 100% cpu for about 10 seconds on my AMD 1700 and then displays the mail itself. If I then want to view the file ("view inline"), it takes another 10 seconds to display. This becomes a major annoyance when I receive multiple jpeg attachments, my box becomes unuseable for quite a long time (100% cpu load).

I tried to install Mdk (9.1, 9.2 RC2, and cooker snaphot) on a sony vaio PCG-GRT785E laptop. None of them goes further than kernel (any of the proposed one 2.4, 2.2 etc) loading into Memory at the very begining of the install process. It seems that is hard drive or IDE problem acces. I'm willing to help and test anything. Please It will be so nice that your last distrib work on this laptop, because on my desktop cooker snaphot works so nice.
