The work around is to manually put in a WIRELESS_MODE=managed in the

 doing this with hardware detect.

if a wireless card appear, harddrake offer to run drakconnect which
set WIRELESS_MODE to Managed by default.

I spent 5 hours last weekend (with a friend in Belgium) getting his USB ADSL

SpeedTouch driver; and I would only work with 2.4.21-13mdk.

I can't tell you for certain whether it is the speedtch driver or just the
amload firmware uploader, as the uploader would not work on any kernel other
than the stock 9.1 kernel. It just gets errors doing a bulk_write to the
device.

I like this idea, sometimes it's not possible to connect to the internet
(e.g. if you have dhcp as only option and bug #5669 isn't fixed yet)
or if you're installing a standalone machine. Whenever you download the

Of course sometimes a CD is faster than an internet connection and sometimes

lot of machines to update (lame excuse, I know, but it might help newbies ;-)

If one mixes packages from various releases, and something does not work,
the dependencies are not correct. Epoch should not be used to fix binary
 incompatibilities.

Example: to allow upgrading downgrading mozilla/galeon/etc., all
moz libraries that are used by other packages must be in a separate
package, and have a major version number. If binary incompatible compiler
versions must be taken into account, the compiler version must be added as
 well.

 So instead of

libxpcom.so in package mozilla, you have
 libxpcom-1.4-3.3.so.0.0 in package libmozilla1.4_3.3-1.4-2mdk
(libxpcom of mozilla 1.4 compiled with g++ 3.3, binary incompatible
 with libxpcom-1.4-3.1.so.0.0 and libxpcom-1.3-3.3.so.0.0)
(the exact placement of the library versions may be different, I don't
 know what's best)

Then it is possible to have mozilla 1.5 installed, together with a galeon
that requires mozilla 1.3. Upgrading a mdk 9.1 with these packages to mdk
9.2 does not upgrade mozilla, but does upgrade galeon, and everything
 still works.

Maybe it works in this case ( I don't know if it does), but it's definitely
not guaranteed to work in all situations. It's not just gcc that breaks binary
compatibility, it's also other libraries, or libraries used by libraries.
Remember the nightmare when going from libpng2 to libpng3?
Sometimes compatibility even breaks without the library changing its
soname...sometimes glibc breaks binary compatibility...sometimes this,
sometimes that...
Sometimes you know these things before you run into them, and sometimes not.
But having to set dependencies for this makes things too hard to maintain. Who
is gonna test it, and who is gonna set all these dependencies?
Up to now the resolution was to advise to not mix packages from different
releases, because sometimes things work, and sometimes things break in weird
ways. I think we should stick to that, I wouldn't dare to advise to trust on
dependencies, whatever the amount of time that's being put in testing and
setting it all up.
Mixing packages is Russian roulette, and should be advertised as such. When
people choose to do that, we won't stop them. But when things break because a
9.1 medium (texstar's kde for 9.1) has newer versions then a new mdk release,
then an Epoch can fix that. That's a goal that we can make. The goal you have
seems unrealistic to me. I just wish it was possible, but I don't see it
happening.

That's interesting that http://www.budgetlinuxcds.com already offer such CD
disks with updates, now more than 400 Mb, along with other Mandrake 9.2
related CD's. Right after installation from Download Ed. 3 CD's one can add
such CD as additional update source in Media Manager and easily install
anything he needs to. Besides, they offer also _all_ 9.2 Contribs on 4 CD's
which is also good for people with slower Internet connections or without
them.

I have no relation with this webstore other than very satisfied customer. But
still waiting while my long ago pre-ordered Powerpack DVD will (hopefully)
arrive, it is better to have at least BudgetLinux disks. Besides, these
BudgetLinux disks will be necesary anyway because AFAIK we will receive
uncorrected DVD's full of initial errors from MandrakeStore, so CD with
Updates and 4 CD's with Contributions should be good to have handy ;-)

As for 10.0 ISO's (release and updates) I would suggest again that Mandrake
might consider outsourcing CD/DVD production and shipment to companies really
capable to do this in _days_ not weeks. I mean also commercial products like
PowerPack CD's/DVD-only editions. There are companies like Cheapbytes,
Budgetlinux and many others which IMHO could (within some commercial
agreement framework) quickly produce e.g. Powerpack CD's and accurately ship
them to customers, paying Mandrake the same margin that Mandrake has now from
Powerpacks, or even more. Customers will have their disks much sooner and
with much lower shipping costs. Seems a win-win situation but Mandrake has
been deaf to such ideas for years...

Mandrake could (and IMHO should!) concentrate more on release building and
_quality_, leaving disk production and logistics to people who really know
how to do that.

Nice.

I wonder if we should modify the installkernel script in order to drop
obsolete options (like mem=nopentium) and non-working options
(like framebuffer in 2.6) when adding a new kernel in bootloader.

 Thanks

It would help. One of the objectives of the testing we were doing was to
get the wrinkles ironed out before the public ISOs hit and we were
inundated by novice user problems.

With 21mdk not included on the retail CDs and lots of interest in 2.6,
this installkernel script will see a lot of use.

Will do. See my reply to Tim re. vga=normal. We are chasing two
 possibilites for the problems.
1)Hanging system is using XOSL boot loader
2)Hanging system had nVidia 9.2 drivers installed.
Will retest on another system with XOSL and Matrox video.
 Should have results later today.

Got test results back on hanging system.

Make that 6 members of the 2.6 club, with one glitch: nVidia

Disabling framebuffer in lilo let me see the boot messages, which
revealed to me why the screen just sat there. I'd forgotten that I had
edited the /etc/inittab file to pause for input at the runlevel so I
would be able to choose between console (3) or GUI (5). So last night,
it was waiting for me to enter the runlevel for booting, which if I'd
realised I would have just hit 5 and enter to continue, albeit it would
probably get me to this point I am at now. Successful boot of 2.6test
but no X. Which means that I will need to recompile the nVidia drivers
manually or revert back to the non-nVidia drivers, the latter being the
quickest solution.

Known solution for nVidia so no new bugs.
Also confirms that XOSL-lilo works fine.

   - you can put new version of installer and kernel on the update CD if
   - there is a problem so no need to change main ISO if there is a problem.

You can do this now. I created an Update92CD by mirroring the
Mandrake/updates/9.2 tree from ftp.nluug.nl , burning a CD, and using
urpmi.addmedia to add the CD as an update source.

This is not the same as he is suggesting; if I recall correctly, you have
to reboot at least once (using the newly installed system) in order to be
able to update (unless you have a backup system, but then it's pointless
anyway). Using his approach, you do not need to invoke any kernels
(BOOT and 'regular' ones) which are on the first ISO!

For example, we had the problem here that on one box, only the BOOT kernel
during install could be used--without network access (third-party driver
had to be recompiled) we were lucky to use recue mode and install the -21
kernels from usb stick.

I'd highly appreciate if MDK10.0 will support this!
(and, whilst wishing: could we finally see a back button during install? :)

I am more inclined to think the latter because I don't see anywhere on the

distortion all the time and getting a weird scramble at given intervals.

I also have a C-Port in this machine, but are using the built in Realtek chip
for simple playback.

If I use the default:

above snd-via82xx snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-slot-1 snd-via82xx
alias sound-slot-0 snd-ice1712
above snd-ice1712 snd-pcm-oss

..., the sound is awful. But if I use only:

alias sound via82cxxx_audio

..., the sound is ok. But there seem to be no way of mixing alsa and core
kernel modules in Mandrake?

If I use:

alias sound via82cxxx_audio
alias sound-slot-0 snd-ice1712
above snd-ice1712 snd-pcm-oss

..., only the ice1712 drivers are loaded.

Is this only me having this problem or is it me not doing it right?

Oh, this is MDK9.2 with the latest update kernel.

Cheers.

I've recently downloaded KDE 3.1.93 packages and everything seems to be just
great but:
1, when I run kconfigure I don't see most of the config options (there seem
to be only the old 3.1.3 there

2, in the menu-Configuration, there there two KDE entries, one containing
probably the new 3.1.93 entries, the other probably the old 3.1.3 entries.

3, when I try to acces my bookmarks from the desktop menu, it KDE does not
know that it should open them, despite the fact that I have
/etc/alternatives/webclient-kde - /usr/bin/konqueror.

Any ideas? Should I file it as a bug? Or is there some simple trick I don't
know about?

[Cooker] ping -fb w.x.y.255 kills systems

2003-11-08 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello together!

I wanted to test my network and all servers witch are connected over a
100 mbit switch.
But as soon as I start with ping -fb w.x.y.255 nothing goes more. I
can't change between the tty consoles for change from tty 12 to tty 1.
Is that normally? I've installed everywhere Kernel secure and the grsec
patch and I have gradm activated . But the server freeze.I always
thought, that the grsec patch was for to prevent this or to prevent that
a service used so much memory and so blocked the computer?

Can someone help me?

 Hi folks,

I've recently downloaded KDE 3.1.93 packages and everything seems to be
 just great but:
1, when I run kconfigure I don't see most of the config options (there
seem to be only the old 3.1.3 there

2, in the menu-Configuration, there there two KDE entries, one containing

probably the new 3.1.93 entries, the other probably the old 3.1.3 entries.

3, when I try to acces my bookmarks from the desktop menu, it KDE does not

know that it should open them, despite the fact that I have
 /etc/alternatives/webclient-kde - /usr/bin/konqueror.

Any ideas? Should I file it as a bug? Or is there some simple trick I
 don't know about?

Bug. Probably filed, but you can add it or vote on it if already there.

Lots of talk on the list about it this morning:

Also, could you remove the Reply-to line in your MUA? It messes with

The discussion on the Club started because some guy that was selling the

represented themselves to ebay as the owner of the mandrake trademarks and
copyrights. If this is a US based partner of MandrakeSoft that is enforcing
an exclusive agreement, fine, but they could also be a sleazy outfit that is
trying to profit off of Mandrake's good name.

I am more inclined to think the latter because I don't see anywhere on the
himandrake site where they state they are an official partner, and every
place where they might say so, it refers only to himandrake or Heavy

It's my understanding that we are partnered with this company. You'll

Hum, you're right, I don't know why, perhaps a wrong module dependency.

Does it happen with test5 or test9 ?
It should be fixed in test9, which is uploaded in contrib.

Hum, you're right, I don't know why, perhaps a wrong module
 dependency.

It's loaded by the network init script (/etc/rc.d/init.d/network) :

-
# If IPv6 is explicitly configured, make sure it's available.
if [ $NETWORKING_IPV6 = yes ]; then
alias=`modprobe -c | awk '/^alias net-pf-10 / { print $3 }'`
if [ $alias != ipv6 -a ! -f /proc/net/if_inet6 ]; then
case $(modprobe -V 2/dev/null) in
modprobe* )
echo alias net-pf-10 ipv6
/etc/modules.conf
;;
module-init-tools* )
echo alias net-pf-10 ipv6
/etc/modprobe.conf
;;
esac
fi
fi
-

$ grep ipv6 /lib/modules/`uname -r`/modules.alias
alias net-pf-10 ipv6

An alias is made to ipv6 in modules configuration files, so the
network script loads it.
I don't know if it's the correct behaviour what do you think ?

I'm cc-ing Andrey because he's the author of modprobe configuration
files, so he's likely to help us :)

 here:

  http://www.mail-archive.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/msg08188.html

Thank you, thank you, thank you.

 That fixed it.

But I'm getting this (from boot.log):

I'm getting the same thing, but the control # is different. I've been
searching around in '/usr/share/alsa/', but haven't found anything
 yet...

Well, I was looking in the wrong area. controls seem to be set via
 '/etc/asound.state'.

I'm going to tinker with this and see what happens :)

It would appear that checking the settings via 'alsamixer' and then saving
the config with '/usr/sbin/alsactl store' stores the configuration in the
proper format, and the errors are gone.

[Cooker] Trying to find packages in cooker.

2003-11-08 Thread Tom and Esther Ward
Hello, list.
I'm new to this list, and I am interested in helping debug, test, and work
with the cooker release of Mandrake. However, I'm having problems finding a
couple of packages that I absolutely require in order to work with Linux.
I have a visual problem seeing the screen, but in Gnome 2.4 there is the atk
libraries, gnopernicus screen reader, festival tts, gnome-mag magnifier, as
well as other Gnome accessibility packages.
Since I am very new to cooker I can't seam to tell if anyone has created
rpms for these very necessary packages for those of us without perfect
vision.
If these are not included in cooker could someone please take some time to
include all the gnome accessibility libraries and accessibility programs in
Mandrake. Thanks, and looking forward to your responce.

see http://www.mandrakelinux.com/en/errata.php3#netapic

since mdk9.1, mandrake enable local APIC and ACPI.
some bioses do not like this and misconfigure network cards.

either boot with noapic or acpi=off or alternatively try mdk9.2 (newer
kernel have better acpi support and workaround more buggy bioses)

I have a SMC-2662W device and an internal network card (e100 - eth0). I can
connect to a wireless access point and to a fixed lan for internet. Here is a
run down of the steps (and the bugs):
-Start the computer (e100 is connected to the network)
-Plug in the device
-Device seems to be recognised by driver usbvnetr : ../src/usb/vnetusba.c: usb
eth1 initialized and registered (IMPROVEMENT: some visual feedback or sound on

-Device is there under eth1 but driver says e100 (BUG)

-Stuff is not availab;le in the list of profiles (BUG)
-Create new profile called stuff
-Select stuff in the list of profiles (it's now available)
-Half the time this crashes Drakconnect (think it might be DHCP on eth0 taking 2

-Computer hangs for a couple of minutes (BUG: wireless is trying to get address
from DHCP but I haven't configured the wireless options so where is it going to
get it from??? Nowhere. Reduce the timeout, please)
-Congratulations (BUG: Drakconnect has blatantly not been able to configure
DHCP, where is the feedback on that)
-BUG: ok, I have two network interfaces connected, where do I specify which
one I use for connecting to the internet in the wizard???
-Finish
-Click Configure Hostname
-Enter the DNS server and gateway (BUG: what i they are supplied by DHCP i.e.
linked to the previous bug, let teh user choose which interface is used to
connect to the internet)
-I enter the manual values - i know them
-Finish
-Click Configure Internet Access
-BUG: gateway, i just entered that, something better would be a list of
available devices and let the user choose, which one is used to connect to teh
internet
-Click Ok
-Click Ok again to exit Drakconnect (BUG: again, running DHCP and waiting for
timeout)

Now two situations: I am a newbie and I have no idea how to configure wireless
settings and I can't find any tool to do so - I ditch MDK 9.2 and go back to
Windblows world.
I am me and i wat to support MDK, so I manually run iwconfig to set up the right
iwconfig parameters, ok, wireless is up, now i still need DHCP !! (BUG: where am
i meant to enter the wireless settings so they are saved ?? also, how about
multiple wireless profiles)

-Click on Drakconnect again
-BUG: eth1 has disappeared
-Relaunch the whole wizard with teh smae bugs :(
-BUG: although i specify I have a usbvnet_rfmd device, I cannot configure it
(Wizard only does eth0) :-(

It would be nice if this could be fixed, I'll check this bug regularly because
it really matters to me so I am willing to give as much info as possible.

I'm having problems using auto-setup with a wireless
card in managed mode. The problem is that there is no
option for setting the wireless parameters needed for
a pci card. So harddrake sets things up in ad-hoc mode
and the card doesn't work.

The work around is to manually put in a WIRELESS_MODE=managed
in the cfg file in network-scripts but there should be an

out of the box but getting the sb to work is impossible using draksound. It does
give me the option to select a driver for it but if I select what ever driver it
doesn't get stored/changed.

I can remove the undisired modules by hand and then 'modprobe emu10k1' and the
sb works but if I restart the computer these settings are overwritten by
something (alsactl perhaps?). Even if I edit /etc/modules.conf this file is also

i'll alter hardware probing in harddrake next week so that:
- usb/pci devices are probed only once (already done)
- hw class detectors just filter out this device list and partition it between
the devices they register and those they do not handle

hance no more duplicates (unless a serial ups, mouse or modem is reported in
several classes but that never happened)

I'm having problems using auto-setup with a wireless

option for setting the wireless parameters needed for
a pci card. So harddrake sets things up in ad-hoc mode
and the card doesn't work.

The work around is to manually put in a WIRELESS_MODE=managed
in the cfg file in network-scripts but there should be an
obvious way of doing this with hardware detect.

Simon, I don't think the /sbin/dhclient-script is the immediate problem (it is
optional to dhcp, but is used to set routes etc), the immediate problem is this:

socket: Protocol not available - make sure
CONFIG_PACKET (Packet socket) and CONFIG_FILTER
(Socket Filtering) are enabled in your kernel
configuration!

This means that the af_packet module is not loaded, which is required to do a
DHCP REQUEST etc.

I do network installs quite often, but can't test this since DrakX doesn't allow
a custom update source to be used, we have an internal updates mirror and no
access to any official mirrors.

Buchan,
did I mention that using a static address is a workaround for this problem?
I added it to the bugreport in the anthill, but perhaps not in the bugzilla
database

I'm sure this is not too hard to fix for those who work on the installation
procedure (the network part anyway), but so far nobody has recognised this
publicly or privately to me as a serious problem :-(
I use dhcp and a public mirror nearly every time I install mandrake and this
bites me every time!

Cheers

Simon

Bug still present in LM9.2 final. I am using lilo in text mode.

/etc/lilo.conf has timeout=50 but /boot/message-text says:

Welcome to LILO the operating system chooser!

Choose an operating system from the list above or
wait 10 seconds for default boot.

Obviously, /boot/message* files need to be updated when the timeout parameter
is changed in /etc/lilo.conf.

I have chosen text-based LILO as bootloader. The default OS kicks in after 5

time (starts at 5 seconds and starts countdown). However, the LILO help-text
(which explains what to to do to stop the timer) says that the timeout period
is 10 seconds.

Obviously, whichever file contains this message is not updated if the timeout
period is changed from the default of 10 seconds. Hence, the wrong info.

When a package has conditional BuildRequires (like ImageMagick) these are not
picked up when querying the package:

Normal:
[EMAIL PROTECTED] i586]$ rpm -qpR
/mirrors/cooker/SRPMS/ImageMagick-5.5.7.12-1mdk.src.rpm | wc -l
 15

--with plf:

 15
[EMAIL PROTECTED] i586]$ rpm -qpR --with plf
/mirrors/cooker/SRPMS/ImageMagick-5.5.7.12-1mdk.src.rpm | wc -l
 15

From the ImageMagick.spec file:
%if %build_plf
%define enablelzw 1
%define enablejasper1
%define enablefpx 1
%endif

%if %{enablefpx}
BuildRequires: libfpx1-devel
%endif
%if %{enablejasper}

%endif

So, one would expect to see a number larger than 15 when queried with the --with
plf option.

I omitted the raid and scsi modules and still it ran out of space. Is there any
way to create a boot floppy with this kernel version ?
