Epoch should not be used to fix binary incompatibilities. Example: to allow upgrading downgrading mozilla/galeon/etc., all moz libraries that are used by other packages must be in a separate package, and have a major version number. If binary incompatible compiler versions must be taken into account, the compiler version must be added as well. So instead of libxpcom.so in package mozilla, you have libxpcom-1.4-3.3.so.0.0 in package libmozilla1.4_3.3-1.4-2mdk (libxpcom of mozilla 1.4 compiled with g++ 3.3, binary incompatible with libxpcom-1.4-3.1.so.0.0 and libxpcom-1.3-3.3.so.0.0) (the exact placement of the library versions may be different, I don't know what's best) Then it is possible to have mozilla 1.5 installed, together with a galeon that requires mozilla 1.3. Upgrading a mdk 9.1 with these packages to mdk 9.2 does not upgrade mozilla, but does upgrade galeon, and everything still works. Maybe it works in this case ( I don't know if it does), but it's definitely not guaranteed to work in all situations. It's not just gcc that breaks binary compatibility, it's also other libraries, or libraries used by libraries. Remember the nightmare when going from libpng2 to libpng3? Sometimes compatibility even breaks without the library changing its soname...sometimes glibc breaks binary compatibility...sometimes this, sometimes that... Sometimes you know these things before you run into them, and sometimes not. But having to set dependencies for this makes things too hard to maintain. Who is gonna test it, and who is gonna set all these dependencies? Up to now the resolution was to advise to not mix packages from different releases, because sometimes things work, and sometimes things break in weird ways. I think we should stick to that, I wouldn't dare to advise to trust on dependencies, whatever the amount of time that's being put in testing and setting it all up. Mixing packages is Russian roulette, and should be advertised as such. When people choose to do that, we won't stop them. But when things break because a 9.1 medium (texstar's kde for 9.1) has newer versions then a new mdk release, then an Epoch can fix that. That's a goal that we can make. The goal you have seems unrealistic to me. I just wish it was possible, but I don't see it happening. -- Marcel Pol

That's interesting that http://www.budgetlinuxcds.com already offer such CD disks with updates, now more than 400 Mb, along with other Mandrake 9.2 related CD's. Right after installation from Download Ed. 3 CD's one can add such CD as additional update source in Media Manager and easily install anything he needs to. Besides, they offer also _all_ 9.2 Contribs on 4 CD's which is also good for people with slower Internet connections or without them. I have no relation with this webstore other than very satisfied customer. But still waiting while my long ago pre-ordered Powerpack DVD will (hopefully) arrive, it is better to have at least BudgetLinux disks. Besides, these BudgetLinux disks will be necesary anyway because AFAIK we will receive uncorrected DVD's full of initial errors from MandrakeStore, so CD with Updates and 4 CD's with Contributions should be good to have handy ;-) As for 10.0 ISO's (release and updates) I would suggest again that Mandrake might consider outsourcing CD/DVD production and shipment to companies really capable to do this in _days_ not weeks. I mean also commercial products like PowerPack CD's/DVD-only editions. There are companies like Cheapbytes, Budgetlinux and many others which IMHO could (within some commercial agreement framework) quickly produce e.g. Powerpack CD's and accurately ship them to customers, paying Mandrake the same margin that Mandrake has now from Powerpacks, or even more. Customers will have their disks much sooner and with much lower shipping costs. Seems a win-win situation but Mandrake has been deaf to such ideas for years... Mandrake could (and IMHO should!) concentrate more on release building and _quality_, leaving disk production and logistics to people who really know how to do that. Harry

I'd forgotten that I had edited the /etc/inittab file to pause for input at the runlevel so I would be able to choose between console (3) or GUI (5). So last night, it was waiting for me to enter the runlevel for booting, which if I'd realised I would have just hit 5 and enter to continue, albeit it would probably get me to this point I am at now. Successful boot of 2.6test but no X. Which means that I will need to recompile the nVidia drivers manually or revert back to the non-nVidia drivers, the latter being the quickest solution. Known solution for nVidia so no new bugs. Also confirms that XOSL-lilo works fine.

I think - you can put new version of installer and kernel on the update CD if - there is a problem so no need to change main ISO if there is a problem. You can do this now. I created an Update92CD by mirroring the Mandrake/updates/9.2 tree from ftp.nluug.nl , burning a CD, and using urpmi.addmedia to add the CD as an update source. This is not the same as he is suggesting; if I recall correctly, you have to reboot at least once (using the newly installed system) in order to be able to update (unless you have a backup system, but then it's pointless anyway). Using his approach, you do not need to invoke any kernels (BOOT and 'regular' ones) which are on the first ISO! For example, we had the problem here that on one box, only the BOOT kernel during install could be used--without network access (third-party driver had to be recompiled) we were lucky to use recue mode and install the -21 kernels from usb stick. I'd highly appreciate if MDK10.0 will support this! (and, whilst wishing: could we finally see a back button during install? :) Ad astra, -- Dipl.-Inf. [Cooker] alsa problems
Hi. I have a MSI KT4V motherboard, but the sound is terrible. I'm having distortion all the time and getting a weird scramble at given intervals. I also have a C-Port in this machine, but are using the built in Realtek chip for simple playback. If I use the default: above snd-via82xx snd-pcm-oss alias sound-slot-1 snd-via82xx alias sound-slot-0 snd-ice1712 above snd-ice1712 snd-pcm-oss ..., the sound is awful. But if I use only: alias sound via82cxxx_audio ..., the sound is ok. But there seem to be no way of mixing alsa and core kernel modules in Mandrake? If I use: alias sound via82cxxx_audio alias sound-slot-0 snd-ice1712 above snd-ice1712 snd-pcm-oss ..., only the ice1712 drivers are loaded. Is this only me having this problem or is it me not doing it right? Oh, this is MDK9.2 with the latest update kernel. Cheers.

I am more inclined to think the latter because I don't see anywhere on the himandrake site where they state they are an official partner, and every place where they might say so, it refers only to himandrake or Heavy Industrial and there are no links to the MandrakeSoft or linux-mandrake websites. [Cooker] Trying to find packages in cooker.
Hello, list. I'm new to this list, and I am interested in helping debug, test, and work with the cooker release of Mandrake. However, I'm having problems finding a couple of packages that I absolutely require in order to work with Linux. I have a visual problem seeing the screen, but in Gnome 2.4 there is the atk libraries, gnopernicus screen reader, festival tts, gnome-mag magnifier, as well as other Gnome accessibility packages. Since I am very new to cooker I can't seam to tell if anyone has created rpms for these very necessary packages for those of us without perfect vision. If these are not included in cooker could someone please take some time to include all the gnome accessibility libraries and accessibility programs in Mandrake. Thanks, and looking forward to your responce.

[Cooker] [Bug 6315] [drakconf] New: MCC fails to create boot floppy in LM 9.2
http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/show_bug.cgi?id=6315 Summary: MCC fails to create boot floppy in LM 9.2 Product: drakconf Version: 9.2-4mdk Platform: All OS/Version: All Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: normal Priority: P2 Component: drakconf AssignedTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ReportedBy: [EMAIL PROTECTED] I am using the 2.4.22-21mdk-i686-up-4GB kernel. When I try to create a boot floppy from mcc, it gives an error about No space left on device after trying to copy all relevant files for more than a minute. So I tried the command-line option: /bin/bash /sbin/mkbootdisk --noprompt --verbose --device /dev/fd0 2.4.22-21mdk-i686-up-4GB and got this message: Formatting /dev/fd0... mount: /dev/fd0 already mounted or /tmp/syslinux.mnt.12719.0 busy done. Copying /boot/vmlinuz-2.4.22-21mdk-i686-up-4GB... done. Creating initrd image... cp: writing `/tmp/mkbootdisk/initrd.img': No space left on device Error ! I omitted the raid and scsi modules and still it ran out of space. Is there any way to create a boot floppy with this kernel version ? -- Configure bugmail: http://qa.mandrakesoft.com/userprefs.cgi?tab=email --- You are receiving this mail because: --- You are on the CC list for the bug, or are watching someone who is.
