I have not looked in detail at Gentoo but I understand their general mode of operation. There is no reason they could not have achieved the same results using .rpm rather than .deb. I quoted Gentoo as a source of why some are unhappy with Mandrake as they have reasons why they chose to abandon Mandrake. I think the following is a good read: http://www.distrowatch.com/article-rpm.php Most of that is anti-RPM biased FUD, IMO. I have dealt with RPM for many many years and have had only 1 incident of issue, when I interrupted an RPM installation in process and lost the database. That is one incident in many many years and many many many upgrades. In fact I have moved several of my machines from one RPM distribution to another -- both Mandrake Cooker and whatever the current Mandrake release was at the time to TurboLinux on several machines (when I worked at TL) back to Mandrake Cooker and the subsequently released versions of Mandrake Linux -- all without incident. I have most recently used urpmi to move from 8.2 to 9.0 much the way deb-heads like to brag about upgrading their distros. The last time I did an actual fresh install was the first time I install all these boxes I have here. They have _always_ been upgraded using RPM and urpmi. But lets drop it here, please. If you like .deb, that is great. Choice is the reason we are all fans of OpenSource right? But let's not start pounding the "Mandrake should use .debs" drum yet again. It's boring and tedious. b. I know there is a holy war involved in deb vs rpm, that's why I posted a link and ducked, I personally like debian and debs and Mandrake. -- Steve

rpmdrake should return to the original single installer / uninstaller with options to force install/remove only (for the unexperienced). And bring back the feature that showed which version is currently installed. Lyall Pearce wrote: To be quite honest, I am at a loss as to why Mandrake have gone the two application approach. Fails to load Tried a couple of times with no luck oshould I boot from the second install CD ? oDo I need the enterprise kernel ? oShould /etc be on /dev/hde1 [ext2] rather than /tmp? -- Steve
[Cooker] USB Mouse
I have an MSI KT3 Ultra (MS 6380E) with both USB 1.1 and USB 2.0, when I installed both rc2 and rc3 I was unable to use my Microsoft USB wheel mouse. I looked at the modules that were running and all of the necessary usb modules where loaded. If i reloaded the modules the light on the mouse would come on for a few minutes and then shut off. Once I installed rc3 I was able to use my mouse by using the older 2.4.18. Thanks, Stephen Durham

RE: [Cooker] LILO and Boot Device
When I installed I used Expert Install. I told it to use SDA as boot device but it still wrote boot=/dev/hda to lilo.conf. When I rebooted, the system just sat there with just a blinking cursor. I didn't even get any of the "LILO" display. I set the system to boot from IDE and got "LI" I then set it back to boot from SCSI and ran rescue. I went into lilo.conf and changed the first line to read boot=/dev/sda Everything works fine now. System Config: /dev/sda=/ /dev/sdb=/usr /dev/sdc=/home /dev/hdc=/windows Like I said, everything works fine now. If you're sure it was something I missed, then OK that's fine. If not, I'm just trying to help make a wonderful distro better:) Steve -Original Message- From: Guillaume Cottenceau [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, November 26, 2001 9:53 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [Cooker] LILO and Boot Device "Thomas, Stephen W-CONT" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes: > I had this problem last night when installing 8.1 It may be fixed in cooker, > but just in case > > When installing Mandrake on a mixed system, SCSI and IDE drives, and the > system is set to boot off the SCSI drives, LILO writes the boot device as > /dev/hdc. It should be /dev/sda. There is no way from DrakX to know if the BIOS is set up to boot off SCSI first or IDE first, so when there is not guess, it's assumed that IDE is first. When you choose to install the booloader on /dev/sda (expert mode), it should install the bootloader on /dev/sda and assume that the first disk is /dev/sda, thus boot correctly. -- Guillaume Cottenceau - http://people.mandrakesoft.com/~gc/
[Cooker] LILO and Boot Device
I had this problem last night when installing 8.1 It may be fixed in cooker, but just in case When installing Mandrake on a mixed system, SCSI and IDE drives, and the system is set to boot off the SCSI drives, LILO writes the boot device as /dev/hdc. It should be /dev/sda. The bios is set to boot off the SCSI and the system was booting off the SCSI until I installed Mandrake. I fixed the "boot=" in lilo.conf and it works fine now Steve
[Cooker] Broken /dev/cdrom link
I did a fresh RC1 install the other day and the /dev/cdrom link was broken. Ditto when I upgraded to the latest cooker. There was no /dev/cdroms directory, no /dev/scd0, and nothing in /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target2/lun0. Doing: modprobe sr_mod fixed it. Is this supposed to be loaded at boot-time? It tries to do: modprobe scsi_hostadapter at boot-up and that command seg faults. Are they related? Let me know if you want to see config files. It's an Adaptec 29160 (using the aic7xxx module). thanks, Stephen

Re: [Cooker] Pan newsreader segfaults
I found the problem. The get_host_name() function in util.c only returns the first portion of the hostname. That is, mine is "Mjmh3.net.utulsa.edu", and it just returns "Mjmh3". Adding "net.utulsa.edu" to my list of domains to search allows the app to start. Alternatively, editing the source to replace: ptr = strtok (hostname, "."); with ptr = hostname; fixes things. Is the current behavior appropriate? Should I take this to the Pan mailing list? (also, I'd still like to know how to set up a debug build if anyone knows) --Stephen

I've had problems with the kenwood 72x cdrom when I've used it with installs. When it comes time to insert the 2nd CD, timing is critical. I put it in, close the tray, count to 3, hit "OK". I put it in, close the tray, count to 6, hit "OK". I put it in, close the tray, count to 5, hit "OK". Re: Re: [Cooker] licq qt-gui plugin question
I got it working on my Cooker system. The --with-kde option goes on the ./configure line for qt-gui and you have to have the kde-devel rpm installed. Is it relevant as to how the two data streams are compressed, we are interested in compressing the difference stream. might be to a pure maths type person, bit beyond mine howabout xdelta delta -9 beta3.iso rc1.iso beta_2_rc1_upgrade.gz assuming xdelta can handle 640M files ;-) it's been trundling along upstairs for about 10hrs, but its a p2-233 128M so it could take awhile. perhaps someone else could take a crack at it as well i tried it yesterday with 100M off the front of each iso, but can't remember the size of the result file. i stopped it in order to go for delta'ing the lot. i wouldn't have done that if the size wasn't quite small, maybe 30M if you were tracking mandrake, had pulled the first beta, and had the choice of another 640M or 150M download and 'patching' ?? [Cooker] ISO images - is a binary diff file possible ??
Having only just finished downloading Beta3, the air became slightly colourful when as browsing email I saw RC1 mentioned, closely followed by a 'here we go again' feeling, my computer is definitely moving out of my bedroom. I should perhaps mention my modem, that's why I waited for a slightly longer lasting beta than 1 & 2 ;-) Questions:: 1. Would a binary difference file be possible ? 2. Would it necessaryily be significantly smaller ? 2a. How would it compress ? 3. If it was say 20-50%, would you produce one for the mirrors ? 4. Would it be similar for 'Extension' cdroms ? [Cooker] 7.2 Beta bug report
I have two machines and a LONG list of problems to report. 1) My home machine has a cd-rw a dvd and a zip drive. You detected and configured the cd-rw, but pointed it at the wrong "device" , instead of pointing it to "scd1" it should have been pointing to "scd0", I had to change this "manually" to correct the problem. 2) The ide-floppy option DOES NOT SUPPORT THE "EJECT" button, on my zip drive. This is a very very serious and frustratingly annoying "BUG". Without "eject" button support, the supermount support of the zip drive is totally USELESS ! I was able to fix this on my home machine, by changing the zip drive to use ide-scsi, instead of ide-floppy, and pointing the device to "sda4" , but I couldnt get this to work on my work machine, which again is frustrating, because , I would like to "show-off" my cool linux machine, which should be just as easy as "windows" but I cant, because of these ugly glitches THIS IS AN OLD BUG WHICH HAS NOT BEEN FIXED YET, THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME I HAVE COMPLAINED ABOUT THIS PROBLEM ! 3) printer install-config, during printer install and config, i received a very confusing message, saying "cop" server not found. 4) When creating a new partition, the partition MUST BE SET BOOTABLE. If you do not do this , system commander will not see the new partition and add it to his boot menu, and the partition will not be bootable from system commander. This is an OLD BUG, WHICH HAS NOT BEEN FIXED YET !!! Framebuffer kernel should NOT BE THE DEFAULT , IT CAN CAUSE TO MANY PROBLEMS FOR TO MANY PEOPLE, IT SHOULD NOT BE ACTIVE DURING THE INSTALL EITHER !! 9) The microsoft intelimouse driver does not work. [Cooker] ulysses rc.modules symlink missing
Hi there, I'm not sure if anyone's noticed yet, but the symlink to /etc/rc.d/rc.modules in /etc is missing in the ulysses 7.2b ISO. rc.sysinit points to rc.modules in etc, which tends to break things. Steve

I've just downloaded 750 meg of cooker, and was wondering how people divide this into the two CDs for an installation. Thanks. -- Stephen I know this must be a much-asked question, but I couldn't find any FAQ on it. It would be great if it could be added to the cooker site.

[Cooker] Corel WordPerfect 2000 with Cooker ..
Hi there, I just got my hands on a copy of Corel WordPerfect 2000 .. I've installed it, along with running a patched installer from the Corel FTP site for non-Redhat OS's. WordPerfect 2000 uses a funky font server called "FontTastic". Whenever I disable XFS and try to start X, I get an error when X can't find the 'fixed' font. Thanks for the reply. You were right. My G200 was misdetected as having 4 MB RAM, whereas it really had 8, which caused my mouse pointer to be invisible. [Cooker] Invisible mouse pointer in XFree 4.0 + crypto
This may have been fixed, but I just installed hydrogen from the iso. Problems: In XFree 4.0, the mouse pointer is invisible. I'm running it with a matrox millineum G200, 8 MB RAM, Voodoo II, with a logitech firstmouse+ PS/2, SMP kernel on a dual celeron Abit BP-6. The mouse isn't exactly invisible: when you click on the desktop, a little white pixel is illuminated. When you move it over a widget (like the close "X" on a window), it will become highlighted and is functional. The ftp connection didn't work for the crypto stuff; there was a message about not being able to find the file it was looking for. -- Stephen

Re: [Cooker] PPP
open an xterm up and try ps aux|grep ppp should be 2 lines, the grep and i don't think you'll have second for pppd tail /var/log/messages when you've tried to connect. something about echo from pppd i had to add a pppd option in the setup (kppp) lcp-echo-failure 0 hope it helps, trouble is i rarely see more than 10k on the kppp details graph now. must check uart is set to 112k !!
