Re: [Cooker] VMware 4.0 fails to install on anything but standard kernel

2003-09-09 Thread Bernard Varaine
when you compile VMWARE it does a check btween the version of the kernel
you are running  version 2.4.22-6mdk-i686-up-4GB
and /usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h if I remember correctly.

Simply change the version.h to match your runnign kernel description

I believe the problem is compiling the VMWare interface with the latest GCC.
If you didn't need to compile it (run vmware-config.pl) after the update,
then you don't see the problem. My computer has this error currently.

Fixed, thought I had to do a lucky dip on the kernel files and hope I had the
right one. Now if only this messge will show up on the list. I haven't
received any for hours from this list, newbie or expert. What's up?

All the kernel files on Cooker are produced by the Cooker kernel-source
file. If you're a normal user just get the basic kernel package, if you
have multiple processors get kernel-smp, if you have over a gig of
memory get kernel-enterprise...they're just the same kernel with
different compilation options. But you don't need to go downloading
stuff manually, you should be using urpmi...

Hi Trevor,

I am running VMWare with 9.1. It's generally /usr/src/linux where linux
is a symlink to your kernel sources. If it's not there, your kernel
sources are not installed and you'll need to install them.

Kernel-headers are different from kernel-source. To compile kernel
modules you need the kernel-source package. Kernel-headers have been

Don't use 'rpm -Uvh kernel-source*.rpm', use 'urpmi kernel-source' or
use the package manager. ncurses-devel is provided by libncurses5-devel,
but any decent package management tool know this, and will install it
for you when you ask for ncurses-devel (and thus if you ask for
kernel-source).

Please be careful when giving advice that you give the *correct* advice.

The problem maybe that the kernel headerfiles are not installed. They are not
on the CDs. I anywhere from cooker. After installing those you find the
directory '/usr/src/linux/include/...'. (When installing the kernel header
files i was asked after ncurses-devel, baut I could not find this rpm on

After installing the kernel header files I could install and run vmware3.2.

If it's an orinoco/avaya/lucent based card then briding won't work on it -
lucent only allows one MAC on the card and disables bridging ability.

On my 9.0/3.2 is this problem caused by firewall (shorewall). VMWare NAT
network works but host only packets are droped - see dmesg.

Well, I'm running VMware 3.2 at this very moment on the latest

Sounds like vmware's kernel module doesn't work right with 9.0's kernel.

I don't brigde the wireless, I bridge the built-in ethernet card. Also be
reminded that it works fine in Mandrake 8.2 and if I use 9.0 with the 8.2
kernel (2.4.18-6) is works fine.

Reboot and pass the noapic command to the kernel and see if that makes a
difference. I expect it to not make a difference, but it's worth
checking (eliminates a variable).

Make sure that when prompted for the path to the kernel headers you use:
/lib/modules//build

That is supposed to be set to the place the kernel-source package
installs. Of course, I don't use the Mandrake kernel packages so YMMV.

The following lines seem to be missing from
/usr/src/linux/include/linux/version.h:

#if defined(__module__smp)
#define UTS_RELEASE "2.4.6-4mdksmp"
#elif defined(__module__enterprise)
#define UTS_RELEASE "2.4.6-4mdkenterprise"
#else
#define UTS_RELEASE "2.4.6-4mdk"
#endif

Not sure why they weren't there but adding them did the trick for me.

Fire up knode and point yourself at the vmware newsgroups at news.vmware.com.
 That's where the support is mostly taking place.

The change happened at the 2.4.2 release. Applying the patch by itself isn't
enough, though, as I pointed out in my earlier post.

rpm -e kernel-source
rpm -e VMware
rpm -i kernel-source*
rpm -i VMware*
apply patch that somebody else posted:
cd to the directory that contains vmnet.tar
tar xvf vmnet.tar
cd vmnet-only
apply patch
cd ..
mv vmnet.tar vmnet.tar.orig
tar cf vmnet.tar vmnet-only/*
vmware-config.pl

I'm doing this from memory, but should get you going again. This has worked
for me and for others (thanks again, Pete!). I don't know if it's overkill
somewhere along the line, but it does work.

Your vmnet module is loaded when it tries to load the new one, try
'/etc/rc.d/init.d/vmware stop' then 'lsmod' to make sure vmnet is gone
before running vmware-config.pl.

Yeah, as a matter of fact it fails building, what I mean is that I have been
running the same kernel with vmware for quite a few weeks now. Something else
just caused it to die unexpectedly.

When compiling the vmware mods this happens:

There is probably a light difference of kernel configuration between the set
of
C header files you specified and your running kernel. You may want to rebuild
a

It is 8139too which is what I am using now ...see:

[glee@anakin glee]$ /sbin/lsmod | grep 8139
8139too14848   1 (autoclean)
[glee@anakin glee]$

Which is what I am using for my 8139 card.

Jeff has (privately) some time ago answered me as to why this kernel module
has changed name.

No, in stage1 you don't yet have a shell. Not enough disk space :-).

Can you tell me the pci entry number of your network card? Use the
"lspci*" suite to discover it. My best guess would be "10ec8129", is that
right?

I actually got it working using the stock Mandrake kernel (although I had
previously run your makeoldconfig, make dep suggestion and was still having
problems).

The catch is to specify the correct directory spec for the include files.
It's /usr/src/linux/include. Once I got that right, the rest went smoothly.

Now I just have to convince W98 to install from a SCSI CD (it's really an IDE
CDRW but accessed via the ide-scsi interface). If it's not one challenge
it's another...

When I do this it complains that my kernel is 11mdksmp and my inculdes are
for 11mdk. See error below.

Keith

The directory of kernel headers (version 2.4.0-11mdk) does not match your
running kernel (version 2.4.0-11mdksmp). Consequently, even if the compilation
of the module was successful, the module would not load into the running
kernel.

I just did what you did, but used

are not using the Mandrake kernel? What is 2.4.0-2kk1? A special

Would it be the old war of /usr/include/linux being an independent tree or
sym-linking to /usr/src/linux/include/linux ?

Try installing the kernel-headers package that fits with the kernel and
kernel-source you have installed.

Really, to compile new kernel modules, you just need the kernel-headers
package, not kernel-source (if vmware does not patch anything inside kernel).

the VMware script wants /usr/linux, not /usr/src/linux.

I've done that, and this is the errors I'm getting. Are we looking at a
Cooker issue or a VMware issue?

I can tell you that the modversions.h file in the 2.4 kernel is considerably

Thanks, but why has this become necessary? Why don't you distribute the

i say before to be able to compile you need to do :

let know the vmware script (i don't know how it works) to use
/usr/src/linux, go in the /usr/src/linux run

make mrproper
make oldconfig
make dep

and run the vmware script.

It works with 7.2. I built 2.4.0 from source, then re-ran
vmware-install.pl, no problems.

you need the kernel-source installed and try also to do in
/usr/src/linux :

make mrproper
make oldconfig
make dep

and rerun the vmware script.

this is the current version of cooker of our kernel. It's basically
the 2.2.15pre3 with a bunch of patch.

Choose the kernel for your need :

kernel (the standard kernel of distribution)
kernel-smp (same of normal but with multi processor support).
kernel-fb (same of normal but with frame buffer support).
kernel-secure (a kernel fb & smp with special (annoy) patch for security).
kernel-linus (the kernel like you find on ftp.*.kernel.org in rpm).

And well if want the bleeding on the edge, you can get the hackkernel
from contrib, it's the kernel 2.3 with patch. (Bugs reports go to Jeff
;)).

This kernel is in the cooker distrib, not Air. Cooker is the always changing
development version of Mandrake (now 7+). Before a package makes it as an
Air update, it is tested in cooker. This is also the meaning of the decimal
0.7 build number, not ready for prime time. When it is, the build number
will be pumped up to 1, and the 2.2.15-1mdk will appear as an Air update.
Now, this is mainly a guess, anyone correct me if I am wrong.

Mmmh... looks OK here:

$ cat /usr/src/linux/include/linux/version-up.h
#define UTS_RELEASE "2.2.15-0.7mdk"

I am using the standard kernel, not the "linus" one.
