Post your fstab line.
Can you see files on /mnt/cdrom using any CD?

Just my 2 cents, Disk 1 is an HFS disk (Stew correct me if I am wrong),
where Disk 2 is a Unix (Rockridge) disk. I have seen this, and had to do
the mount manually in the past (mount -t hfs /dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom). But
that was before I installed 9.1 which has a really nice line in the fstab:
none /mnt/cdrom supermount
dev=/dev/hde,fs=auto,ro,--,iocharset=iso8859-1,codepage=850,umask=0,user 0 0

I hope this helps,

Actually disk1 is a hybrid hfs and iso9660. You should be able to mount

Items under /boot are the ones suitable for installation.
Items under BootX are for use post-install.

all.gz is the initrd, vmlinux is the kernel. So you set all.gz as your

root=/dev/ram3 ramdisk_size=32000

Using the 9.xbeta2 cds, I click on the "Mandrake Linux Installer" but
nothing gets copied to the system folder.
I copied all.gz and vmlinux to the System folder, along with bootx app

This works, but it looks like it's kernel 2.4.18 and I thought it would
be 2.4.20.

I also see no less than ten kernels on the install disc 1. What should
I use as the init and the kernel for the latest and greatest?

Apologies for these newbieish questions. I tried using

lauch with "no suitable kernels found".

If you want any video options, or text install, etc. Those would also
be
in the kernel arguments. I'm pretty sure this is covered in the
tutotial
on the CDs. You can also look at yaboot.conf to see various boot

I'd recommend doing everything on the Linux side.
urpmi.addmedia is your friend. Olivier Thauvin has put together a nice
little tool to help you add urpmi sources:

http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/

Myself, I have it all here, since I'm building it, and then I nfs share it
to the other machines. (4 running various states of cooker - still
fighting with the installer on the 7600).

So in my case my urpmi source is an nfs mount from another machine or a
local directory:

Powerbook:

[root@powerbook root]# cat /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg
cooker //mnt/nfs {
  hdlist: hdlist.cooker.cz
  list: list.cooker
}

RS6000:

[stew@rs6000 bin]$ cat /etc/urpmi/urpmi.cfg
cooker //mnt/disk/RPMS {
  hdlist: hdlist.cooker.cz
  list: list.cooker
}

If you are using a remote repository, yours will look slightly different.
man urpmi.addmedia goes into more detail.

Once you have your source setup, then staying up to date with cooker is
simply a matter of regularly doing

urpmi.update cooker
urpmi --auto-select

(That is once you've done the initial transition from 8.2->cooker)

The installer is essentially the same as x86, so we probably do inherit
that bug. /usr is going to get the bulk of your install. On my machine
/usr/share is 700M. and /usr without "share" is 1GB. "/" shouldn't get too
much.

Hi Ben,
I threw a glance a t your supplemental rpms. I can't rsync, just ftp on
my machine here. It is not clear to me wether there is only supplemental
stuff there or the original iso content plus the supplemental? (looks like the
second to me, no?). In this case is there a list of the supplemental files
you have added so that we can download only these and not spoil your bandwidth?

Bye and thanX

For the install, the ones in /boot (you don't use any devfs options
then, you use install options. initrd-all.gz, etc.).

After the install, the ones in BootX. mesh is included in the initrd, as

Tried both of these as kernel arguments in BootX:

devfs=mount root=/dev/sdb7
devfs=nomount root=/dev/sdb7

Both gave me the same results as before.

Am I supposed to be using the initrd and kernel that are in the BootX
directory, or the ones that are in the 'boot' directory on the CD?
Or does it matter? I have been using the ones from the BootX directory,
with the exception that I'm using the initrd downloaded from your
site.

Also, are these the same kernel/initrd that I will use after installation,
or is there another set?

That's true, but unfortunately that's not the only problem with the
applescript. It doesn't work for me even though I'm on a US system (9.2.2).
That's because it doesn't find the settings file that it should copy into
the system folder, as apparently AppleScript doesn't know where to look if
you just tell it to do something with «file "x" of folder "y"». It seems to
expect an absolute path, which can be constructed e.g. by saying «file "x"
of folder "y" of insertion location». See the alternative script I've
written

and the thread about it

 Subject: Applescript

Another problem is that BootX's ramdisk file location setting is only
correctly setup if the user by accident has the file in the same place (same
absolute path) as Stew had it when he made the settings file. I don't know
any way of correctly automating this, but one can at least tell the user how
to manually set this up.

Hardrake isn't really going to do anything for you for PPC sound. Most
all of the machines use the same drivers, although the name has changed
with kernel updates:

2.2.x dmasound
2.2.4 dmasound_awacs
2.2.4+ dmasound_pmac

With 8.2, you should have the following modules loaded:

dmasound_pmac 46584 0
i2c-core 14824 0 [dmasound_pmac]
dmasound_core 13640 0 [dmasound_pmac]
soundcore 4936 3 [dmasound_core]

With an entry something like this in /etc/modules.conf:

alias sound-slot-0 dmasound_pmac

If all that is in place, xmms output driver should be OSS Driver 1.2.7.

It could also be a permissions issue on /dev/dsp, although normally this
gets set up properly when you log in/run X.

You should be able to get this just by loading the apm_emu module.

This will load it whenver you want:
modprobe apm_emu

add this to your /etc/modules to make it always load:

Again, fixed by installing devfsd. Still no /dev/dvd though so Xine
complains. Fixed this by editing the ~/.xine/config file so that is uses
/dev/cdrom instead as DVD device.

This was fixed by installing the devfsd. Maybe this package should be made
"enforced" so that users can't deselect it?

If I choose that I have another Ethernet card that is has detected the

I still can't get through to the list, but at least you get this reply.

I experience the same problem with my iBook2 (May 2001 model) and 8.2

things are running in the background (I know as I can decrease/increase

I still have pmud problems(ibook 500), even with the latest pmud. (sounds
like the same problem, freezes after you try and wake, just hangs there).
Even after a clean install with the final 8.2 release. I can still get
suspend (blank screen) as I did before. The only way I've ever been able to
get it working properly is to use one of ben H's kernels, but then I can't
use my STP USB modem. Trade off I guess. SO I'm also wondering about the
whole things. I also couldn't get 8.2 to install on my G4, tried for days. I
finely tried yellow dog, just to see what its like and if it would install.
It did, first time and all working well. It's not quite the same as mandrake
though, for a start you need to know the paths of all terminal programs, not
very good for newbies. So now I'm very confused, would like the same linux
on my G4 and ibook. Oh well enough of moaning

I noticed the pwrctl script works with hdparm which is actually not
includet in the iso-images.
Also, the pmud conflicts with some apm rpm's, so am I right
if i say you haven't installed any of these?
Or just to get some tools to work which base on apm-functions,
but they'r not important to get the pmud stuff to run.

I don't think it dosen't work because of a hardware change.
In fact it works with YDL, after reopening the lid the system
gets back as it should and dosen't freeze.

...still wonder 'bout the whole thing :-)

My Titanium goes to sleep and wakes up just fine. pwrctl-local is only
used for your local customizations... it isn't necessary for normal
operation. You should have a /etc/power/pwrctl.

I still haven't upgraded from 8.2beta2 so I'm not sure if 0.10.1 got
included in final or not. But if you aren't running 0.10.1 then that's
probably why it isn't working.

This is what I'm running:
[breser@titanium breser]$ rpm -q pmud
pmud-0.10.1-1mdk

It still wasn't fixed this morning so I concatted some x's to the file

rsync was missing it.

I'd guess they are starting to go out. CD2 of the 8.2 beta2 has been
deleted off my mirror. Since I have it set to not delete more than one
file in that tree, I'd guess my upstream is starting to get the files
and has already deleted it's local copies of beta2. So I'd guess by
later this afternoon (US time) it'll be on the mirrors.

Same file. Take a look at:

the modelines section, see if there is one for 1280x1024

then add entries down below, where you see:

  Subsection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "1024x768" "800x600" "640x480"
ViewPort0 0
EndSubsection

and add "1280x1024" before "1024x768"

You can also use drakxconf

This still may not work, as YDL patches were released as source, I had to wait until
the 2.2 release and borrow from their srpm

Mandrake has already done that. The drivers are "nv" and it recognizes my

The final will have the same nv patches in the kernel and X as YDL2.2, so your

To edit, vim is installed by default. If you want pico, install pine, as it is part of

Thanks for the help! I installed Pico and tried to edit the XF86Config-4
file but without any luck. The screen turns off when I write "startx".. What
can be the problem? All works fine as long as don¹t start the graphical
environment.

If I want to add my monitor settings in XF86Config-4 how do I get it to use
them? My preferred setting is 1280x1024 @ 85Khz. (Horizontal: 91.146, vert:

Well I'd say use vi, but I'm gonna guess you're not familiar with it.
Probably the best thing to do is as root run:
urpmi pine

That should install pine for you and it's dependcies. Be sure to have
your install cds handy when you do this.

After it's done you'll have pico.

There should be no difference in how you edit those files. As long as
you have the pine package installed you'll have pico.

You can choose not to start X by default on boot in the installer or if
it's already installed you can at the boot prompt instead of just say
entering:
linux

enter:
linux 3

That will put you in boot you into boot level 3 which won't start X.
Then you can edit the XF86Config-4 file. If you have the config file
from YDL you should be able to just use it.

Colin, I can look at Ben's kernel and see if I can pull in any new power
management stuff into the Mandrake kernel, without impacting too many
other things. Would you be willing to test it?

i have been testing teh latest version. One thing, the other day i again
tried one of benh's kernels and pmud seemed to work perfectly. It would
sleep and wake up very quickly and didn't crash. Problem was though

I have the same problem with the jumpy trackpad
(iBook2) while typing, too. At first I thought I was
touching the trackpad with my thumbs, but I don't
think that's it. Something else is causing the focus
to go away from where the user is typing.

I'm running Mandrake 8.2 beta 2. I have an HP DeskJet 940c USB printer.
It's plugged into a 7-port Belkin USB hub, which is plugged into a USB port
on my Pismo.

I ran the Mandrake printer setup, chose a manual configuration, and set it
for USB printer #0. It doesn't really matter what physical port the printer
is plugged into. From what I can tell, the first USB printer to be detected
shows up as USB printer #0.

It works perfectly for me.

Here is the USB data on my printer from 'cat /proc/bus/usb/devices'

This one is quite new to me. I've never noticed the mouse wandering
about, but I'm no 90wpm typist myself. If trackpad can't do anything for
it, you could try adjusting the sensitivty in one of the control panels.
There was an issue at one time with trackpad "jitters" on waking from
sleep, but pmud was patched for that.

I don't really know anything about this device, but it doesn't sound like
the issues are unique to PPC. You might try posting those issue in
Mandrake forum and see if the maintainer of that package would respond.

I also don't know why pmud is so problematic for you. If I recall you
don't have the latest greatest ibook right? Power management did not work
correctly on the new TiBook, but these things are a matter of letting the
development catch up with the hardware. The new pmud is up on my web
space, if anyone want's to try it.

I wasn't aware of anything that needed to be fixed. It's a known issue
that Apple removed the analog connection between the CDROM and soundcard
on newer machines and you have to use the cdreader plugin to play CD's.
It's also known that xmms and supermount are somewhat less than
compatible. These issues also exist on x86. I tested the cdreader plugin
on the TiBook Phil lent me, and it seemed to work fine.

I hadn't noticed this as i don't do to much typing. Yesterday my wife
was in a hurry and was writing some emails in ML. She would normaly boot
into macos or use her compaq laptop. Well she reported to same thing
while writing emails in a web browser. At first i thought she must be
accidently touching the trak-pad or something, but shes a 90wpm person
and after wacthing for a while i saw that she wasn't touching the pad at
all. So could that be looked into.

Another bug i've found is with the ADSLspeed touch pro modem setup. I've
managed to get mine working now for a few weeks, and it took some trial
and error. When i want to connect i always have to load the modem
microcode manuly by doing
'modem_run -m -f /usr/share/speedtouch/mgmt.o'.

Using the 'connect'tab in CC does nothing. i then have to go through the
'wizard' to re-enter my isp details. I'm then told that i'm not
connected, but really i am .(i've read that the pc version sometimes
does this)
From there it stays connected for days if need be and is very stable(i
also get a faster download speed than macos9/x or wintel), its just a
hassle having to go through the whole process if for some reason i have
to disconect. Can this be looked at, the Alcatel USB modem is very
populer and i know a number of people that want to use it with linux of
any kind. I still can't get pmud to start and boot, and it still won't
wake from sleep after i have started it manuly.

i also can't play audio CD's. I can if i rip them to MP3s and burn
them to cd, and the sound is perfect. I know there was a issue with this
but thought it had been fixed?

Apart from the probems i have mentiond my ibook is working very well
under this latest beta. The disply is so sharp and crisp and it runs
very fast, faster than macos. It also runs a lot cooler under linux. It
used to get so hot when using os9/x. It also very stable as in

Keep up the good work stew, i for one really appreciate all the hard
work that you've done.

Sure, you can customize the keymap any way you'd like. The AltGr and
compose definitions currently in place are for Linux keycodes, but you can
modify:

/usr/lib/kbd/keymaps/i386/include/compose.inc.gz
(for this one you may want to make a copy in /usr/lib/kbd/keymaps/mac )

You an find the keycodes using showkey

/etc/X11/xinit.d/PPC_altgr_compose is the file defining things for X.
You can use xev, part of X11R6-contrib, to find the X keycodes.

This one is a little hard to diagnose. I don't have any USB printers
here. The kernel USB driver is in place. You can check that linux sees
the printer on the USB bus:

dmesg | grep USB

There should be a printer driver module loaded:

/lib/modules/2.4.18-6mdk/kernel/drivers/usb/printer.o.gz

(use /sbin/lsmod to verify)

Anyone else with USB printers that are working?

It sounds to me like it may be the trackpad... You could try the
'trackpad notap' command? I think it's part of the pmud package.

Sadly not. This is why I had a hell when I made my Swedish Mac keymap for
my iBook2, as I had to boot into MacOS to check what keys really should
come out of some keys (as I wanted it to match MacOS exactly).

Example for Swedish keyboard:

{ - AltGr-7 (PC), Shift-Alt-8 (Mac)
} - AltGr-0 (PC), Shift-Alt-9 (Mac)
[ - AltGr-8 (PC), Alt-8 (Mac)
] - AltGr-9 (PC), Alt-9 (Mac)

For a programmer is is important the above are consistent. I am glad now
that Apple released a new Swedish keyboard when they began with USB (incl
iBook2). The new keyboard is called Swedish Pro, and the only difference
between the old and the new is that the at-sign (@) has moved from being
Alt-* (directly left of ENTER key) to being standard Alt-2 (AltGR-2 on
PC). I will probably revert to Mac keycodes after installing 8.2 as I want
to the same key to produce the same characters as under MacOS on my Mac.
Having the key produce the same character as printed on it has great value
to me, now when I have given up PC compatibles totally.

I am though used to learning different keyboards, during the day I use a
Sun keyboard which has the AltGr key more to the right than on a PC
keyboard.

PS. I tried to call Apple to get a US keyboard for my iBook2. They have
sent me new Swedish keyboards earlier to replace my 3 broken ones. They
said they can't send me a replacement US keyboard if I own a
Swedish-bought iBook2. Idiots! This is same shit I had with MacOSX. I
could not get English (Tier 1) MacOSX with my Swedish-bought iBook2, so
after I had received it I had to shell out $150 to buy the Tier 1 version,
even though I offered myself to return the bundled Tier 2 (Swedish)
version that I had no intention to use.

The gnome file manager (Nautilus) ejects CDROMs automatically when you
umount them by right clicking on a volume (or in the "Disks" section of
the desktop right click menu).
Same kind of process in KDE.

There is another solution : you can just write a shell script :

#!/bin/sh
/usr/bin/eject /dev/cdrom

Then change its permissions to let it be an executable :

chmod u+x yourscript.sh

And then put it on your desktop (copy it on the desktop or use a desktop
launcher if you want it to have a nice icon+tooltip) or on a panel/dock.
You can then use it when you want with a single/double click.

Another solution again : you can configure your cdrom to auto-eject cdroms
when you umount them. The setting is in /proc/sys/cdrom/autoeject. The
default value in this file is O : no ejection. Change it to 1 and it's
done.
Maybe there will be problems with automounters if there is one enabled (it
mounts and umounts removable media automatically when you put it on the
drive). Maybe the automounter will decide to umount (and eject !) a cdrom
after an amount of time of inactivity of the drive.

Attention : the files in /proc aren't stored on the hard disk but are
always recreated in ram. If you want to keep the setting at next boot,
you'll have to add a line in the file /etc/sysctl.conf which should be :
dev.cdrom.autoeject = 1

When I made the decision, I was under the impression this was the way
everyone was moving. The plus side of it was the wealth of keyboard maps
available for the Linux keymaps, compared to the handful we have for macs.
This also allows things like the keyboard selector in the control center
to work properly, etc. etc.

As a US user, both methods work fine for me. I didn't realize until not
that long ago that the Linux keymapping varies so greatly from the
physical keyboard markings on non-US keyboards, making for a confusing
experience. I mistakenly assumed the physical layout, of say a French
keyboard, would be similar on a Mac, as it is on a PC, but that is not the
case apparently.

Yes but you can't fix what you can't reproduce. You're the only one who
has reported this. Have you tried running a tcpdump from another
machine on your network (or something like it ethereal would be easier).
To see what exactly is going on? This might give you a hint as to why
it's failing.

Also, there are several different DHCP clients in the distribution.
dhcpcd, dhcp-client, and pump. Have you tried all of them? Just rpm -e
the one you're currently using and rpm -ivh the other one.

Constantly complaining about a bug only you are having without providing
information to help resolve it, especially when nobody else has the
necessary hardware to replicate it isn't going to solve your issue.

Ben, I think the point I'm trying to make is that even
if Apple is causing the problem, others have managed
to work around it.

In any kind of computing project, sometimes you have
to "fix" things that you aren't responsible for.

I write web pages. Half my day is spent working around
bugs created by browser manufacturers. Even though
those bugs aren't my problem, my pages have to
accomodate them. Why? Because the end user browsing my
pages doesn't care whether it's my fault or Netscape's
fault that the page doesn't work right. It becomes my
fault, and if I don't fix it, my users will find
another site that does.

Please let's not get hostile. I believe it's pretty well publicized that
Mandrakesoft is not rolling in cash. As Ben mentioned the PPC user base
is relatively small, so you're not going to see Mandrakesoft running out
and buying a bunch of PPC hardware. We have attempted to get loaner

near the kind of lab you really need to solidly support the platform.

No it's not a lame copout. The DHCP clients work for everyone *BUT*
you (I'd say Airport users but I don't recall anyone else having this
issue). These are the same daemons that x86 uses. So if
there's a problem with them it would have been discovered by now. So
that tells me Apple isn't following the standard in some way.

I believe that you're having the problem. I always setup my ethernet
interface and my airport interface. Both fail the first time since:
a) I don't plug in my ethernet interface at home, but I leave it turned
on at boot.
b) My airport (as you've already complained about) doesn't have the
ESSID and the key set, so it can't get an address.

Despite both of these interfaces failing to get a DHCP address I'm still
unable to replicate your problem. So there is something more to this
than just those two interfaces failing.

Please read the explanation of what the PPC port is to Mandrake that was
given by the CEO in response to a thread I started. It's not a money
making affair. It's a contribution to the community. And a rather
large one at that.

As far as your offer to buy him an Airport that's great. But obviously
it's not a big enough issue for the rest of the users to find 8 more
users to do it.

OK - verified. I guess I never thought to check this as there really
isn't anything PPC specific about ejecting a CD, but in just trying it now
in KDE, it just sits there. It's not a permissions issue, or you wouldn't
be able to do it from a terminal either. It's a fairly well know bit of
information that the Apple function keys in general don'tperform their
functions in Linux without additional software such as ikeyd.

I didn't blow you off and in fact spent several hours last week trying to
reproduce the scenario, and never did hit a screen asking me that
question. It must only happen when setting up 2 interfaces. I saw a
review of x86 that mentioned a similar situation, so indeed it does seem
to exist. In the case of 2 interfaces, it sort of makes sense to ask, as
you wouldn't eant to start both up, unless they are connected to different
subnets.

By "right clicking to eject cd" I mean that in KDE, if
you right click on the CDROM, there is an option for
"eject" or "unmount" (I forget which). When you click
it, it doesn't work because you don't have permission.

Windows 2000, RedHat, Mac OS X, and Mac OS 9 clients
can retrieve IPs from my Apple Airport Basestation on
both wired and wireless interfaces. Mandrake PPC
cannot. To me, that means that there is a problem with
Mandrake, not with the Base Station. If other
operating systems have managed to connect to it, so
should Mandrake. Attempting to blame the problem on
"Apple's software bugs and hardware failures" is a
lame cop-out. There's nothing wrong with my
basestation.

The "internet connections to start at boot" problem
only occurs if getting IPs fails 9 or 10 lines higher
in the boot process. If you successfully get IPs you
will not see this problem. I'll be happy to get out
the digital camera if it will help you believe that
this problem exists.

I'm not even going to elaborate on Gnome. It, and it's
various components crash all the time and you know it.
Others on this list have the same problem. Use it for
5 minutes and something will crash, guaranteed.

If Stew needs his own Airport stuff to make Airport
work, then perhaps his EMPLOYER should buy it for him.

Before I get into specifics of a number of the items you bring up. You
should realize that this is a port of the x86 Mandrake not an entirely
different PPC distribution. As a result only changes from x86 that are
absolutely necessary are made.

Yes and it's a little too late to change the installer now. 8.2/ppc
tracks with the 8.2/x86 installer. 8.2/x86 is done. No more changes to
the 8.2/SRPMS can really be done. If Stew does change anything from the
x86 SRPMS he has to do a dot release and hang on to the SRPMS since they
won't show on the mirrors so that security updates are possible to do in
the future. This once again has to do with the fact that PPC does not
have a separate source base.

I have no idea what you mean by right clicking to open the CDROM drive.

Not all Macs have that keyboard eject key. And the ikeyd
supposedly is only for iBook 2001's. So no PPC distribution can support
keyboard ejects by default for everyone.

more to it than what you've given. So in short no you haven't given us

This is another PPC specific change to the installer that is just too
late to make. Perhaps in the next version when x86 has better support
for 802.11 cards in the first place this should be easy to implement.

The installer says to me "Hey I see you have this, do you have another
USB controller?" Seems to be it already knows what I have.

If it's not working with an Apple Airport then it's a problem with the
Airport base station not with the DHCP clients in the distribution. The
Airport Base Stations have been plauged by software bugs and hardware
failures from day one. A friend of mine has had Apple replace his twice
due to hardware failures, with the tech admitting that this is common.

Stew isn't a DHCP expert. He produces a distribution. And without an
Airport himself it's difficult for him to diagnose your problem. So
unless you:
 a) Diagnose the problem and produce a patch or
 b) Provide Stew the hardware to do that for you.
your problem probably won't get fixed.

The pmud that is in Mandake 8.2 beta2 PPC should work just fine with his
ibook2. I don't see the point of telling people to install other
distributions RPMS when we are trying to test...

At any rate the pmud rpm will be on his CD or he can find it here:

Another comment (okay, I'm pushing it today...)

I don't really know why you decided to use PC keyboard maps for 8.2 -
probably a lot of users will use MacOS as well as Linux, and I think
it's kind of awkward to have to get used to different keyboard maps in
between sessions. Anyhow, at least there should be an easy option,
either in the installer or in the Control Center, to change to a Mac
keyboard map. If that is not possible, I think lots of people will be
less than happy with an OS where you the keyboard layout doesn't match
the keyboard and CDs can only be inserted by tiping command lines in the
console.

Re: 8.2 beta report - several problems

2002-04-07 Thread Justin Christopher

Modem on the iBook2/500 does not work. This is fixable
by tweaking the PPP modem timeout values. These values
are known, but this fix has not been applied to the
installer. Thus, even though the fix is known, the
installer still puts in PPP values that will not work.

Sleeping an iBook2 by closing the lid or using the
'snooze' command does not work. When you awaken the
computer, it does not accept keyboard or mouse input.
Colin Ward has the same problem so it's not just me.

By default the CDROM drive cannot be opened by right
clicking (no permissions), nor by clicking the
keyboard eject key. I bet 90% of people who complete
the install process can't figure out how to put
another cd in to install more packages without a trip
to google. Frankly, in a modern GUI I don't feel I
should have to open a terminal and type "cd mnt/cdrom,
eject" to open a cd rom drive!

There is a known problem with selecting "do you want
to start the connection at boot" in the installer.
This is a huge bug, and you blew me off by saying "I'm
not familiar with this" despite the fact that I
provided you with an outline of steps to reproduce the
problem.

If the user says "yes" to "Do you want to start this
connection at boot?" a line shows up in the boot
process called "checking for internet connections to
start at boot". This line appears after "getting IP
info for eth0" and "getting IP info for eth1". If
getting IPs fails, the boot process will hang on the
"checking for internet connections to start at boot"
line forever.

To my knowledge that problem has not been addressed,
despite the fact that it can easily cause a newbie to
end up with an unbootable system.

Gnome is so unstable I would not call it usable. I do
not experience this problem on x86, so something else
is wrong.

It's my opinion that a PPC-specific distribution
should offer to configure an Apple Airport card during
the install. They are all the same, there is only one
driver - there should be a prompt for network name,
encryption key, password, and whatever else is needed
to connect.

In the installer, why should the user have to choose
between OHCI and UHCI USB interfaces? I only know I
have USB, I don't even know what those are? At this
point in the installer, you have already autodetected
my USB mouse, so shouldn't the installer know what to
load?

Finally, I still feel strongly that DHCP should be
able to retrieve IPs from an Apple Airport base
station after the default install (especially on a
Mac-specific distribution) although I understand your
position about not worrying too much about a specific
piece of hardware.

Please understand that none of this is a commentary
specifically on you, Stew. I don't understand how you
manage to get so much done by yourself. (The fact that
you're reading the list on a Sunday speaks for
itself).

But it's also clear to me that Mandrake has pretty
much shown their opinion of PPC by not giving you help
in the form of employees or the hardware you need.

When I installed RedHat 7.2 on a Dell Inspiron,
everything worked flawlessly with no post-install
tweaking. I would like to see PPC reach that level
(especially since there are only a couple hardware
types to support, it would seem to be possible). But
it is not there yet.

I agree. Probably most of the problems I mentioned can be fixed, but
really, many of us don't want to open their shell and type two command
lines just in order to open their CD drives. Some things worked just
fine, but others don't at all. I could select and install my printer,
but unfortunately it won't print - Linux says it's printing, printer
status is fine, but no printed page comes out. None of the documentation
gives me any hint on what to do if the proper procedure fails to work.

I tried to follow Sylvains HowTo on changing the keymap. Unfortunately,
the mac keymaps are unpacked (.gz), I couldn't unpack them as a normal
user, tried to do so as root, the whole system crashed and now even
won't start up again. Okay, probably I did everything wrong, but will
the average Mandrake user know better than myself how to deal with stuff
like this? I don't think so. I spent the whole day on this and didn't
make any substantial progress. Then the annoying thing with the cursor
jumping around, of which I don't have ANY idea on how to change it...

Installation is fine, internet is fine, but everything else is just a
mess, at least for me - and unless I'm mistaken, Mandrake is supposed to
be made for people like me?!? Others may as well use Debian. :-)

This is not a slam in any way, but I think even Stew
has indicated that 8.2Beta 2 is very close to what
they'll be releasing as final.

Problems like her printer not getting picked up will
still be there because the functionality of the
installer is not going to change between now and
final. At best, packages which have newer versions
between now and final might be included.

IMO it's not nearly ready for a final release because
of the many problems, but I think others don't feel

Get tetex-* for LaTeX. I am not sure where they are in an install, but
those are the ones that provide xdvi, latex, pdflatex, dvips, etc. You
may also find a2ps, mpage and psutils useful. Others are gv, acroread,
ggv [gnome-gv] and kdegraphics [provides kghostview]. Auctex is a great
emacs LaTeX mode addition, and you should check out preview-latex [at
sourceforge] for something similar to lyx.

http://linuxppc.jvc.nl/RPMS/pmud-0.10-1.ppc.rpm
It also has a sourceforge page now. It may not work perfectly with a
brand new ibook2, but is great for Wallstreet/Lombard/ibook. Best
combined with gkrellm-pmu IMHO. Have you tried typing "snooze" into a
terminal ? The older pmud's had a problem waking up after having a CDROM
mounted but that should have been fixed with wakebay. Pmud tends to work
best with BenH kernels -- there is an option in .config to enable support
for it. It used to need the loopback net device which is why it sometimes
fails on boot if you have not ifup-ed the network; I am not sure whethre
this is still the case. What does it say when you try and start it with
debug, no detach "pmud -d" on the terminal and in /var/log/messages ?

ok, i can answer some of your questions, but not all. I also have an
ibook (500,384MB, 10GB,CDRW) and am also pretty new (to linux, not
macs). First of all i don't know anything about german keybored, but you
should be able to get the @ sighn using the quotation mark key (with
shift). i know there was talk of mac-keymapping, but i haven't had to
use it myself. You can go into the KDE control panel and change the
keybored.

As for opening the CDROM try, i use the eject command in the terminal.
At the promt do
'cd /mnt/cdrom'
then
'eject'

As for mozilla, i can only get it to start-up if i open mozilla mail,
then open in up from there. It must be some bug in KDE, because it opens
fine in gnome, but gnome is to buggy to use properly.

As for those other apps you talk about, go into the software manager.
There are 2 tabs there (amongst other things) that say 'installed' and
'instalable'. You should be able to work out there what you have
installed and what you can install.

My HP 840c deskjet printer works fine. It wasn't detected though and i
had to manuly tell the 'control center' what printer i had and what
interface it was using. If its a USB printer, it should be dev/usb/lp0.
I use the USB plug thats next to the firewire port. The other has my USB
Speed touch pro in it( this also works very well).

As for power management, i can't get it working properly yet.(i can only
get suspend) I am testing the latest pmud, but it needs some work.
Don't worry about any referance to APM, thats for i386.

Remember this is only a beta, most things should be fixed when the final
comes out. You seem to be doing pretty well for a newbie though. I've
found a lot of this is trial and error stuff. Its probley the best way
to learn. good luck

Non-US keyboard mapping still leave a bit to be desired. If you check the
list archives, there's a howto on how to go back to Mac kepmaps, which may
work better for you.

Re: 8.2 Beta 2 report / iBook2 - bad news

2002-03-30 Thread Justin Christopher

Stew,

The problem occurs when you respond "yes" to the
question "Do you want to start the connection at
boot?" in the installer. This question pops up right
after it asks you about static or DHCP on the
interfaces it found. (at least it does on the 'expert'
install).

If you reinstall, and choose "no" instead, then it
will work. (Except obviously you'll have no
connectivity).

The problem of not getting IPs from an Apple base
station can be worked around, and seems to be a bug
with that specific piece of hardware. That I can
understand, and deal with. But the hang if the user
responds "incorrectly" seems pretty bad.
