[CTRL] 2 Microsoft fixes

2000-05-11 Thread Tsadowq

Email viruses are now spreading WITHOUT
THE USER OPENING ANY ATTACHMENT.

Personal computers running Internet Explorer (IE) version 5.0
and/or Microsoft Office 2000 are vulnerable to virus attacks using
most email systems, even if the email recipient opens no
attachments. You don’t even have to use IE; just have it installed
with the default security settings. If you have not closed the
hole, you can receive viruses (and spread them) by viewing or
previewing malicious email without opening any attachment, or by
visiting a malicious web site. The problem is caused by a
programming bug in an Internet Explorer ActiveX control called
scriptlet.typelib. This is by far the fastest growing virus
distribution problem and ripe for a hugely destructive event - at
least as large as the ILOVEYOU virus. Updating your virus
detection software, while important, is not an effective solution
for this problem. You must also close the hole.

The hole can be closed in five minutes or less using
tools available at Microsoft’s security site:

No Gunfire Caught on Waco Tapes

The Associated Press
Wednesday, May 10, 2000; 7:22 p.m. EDT

WACO, Texas –– A final report on the simulation of the deadly
Branch Davidian siege indicates that flashes caught on a
videotape were sunlight reflecting off debris, not government
gunfire as claimed in a wrongful death lawsuit.

Vector Data Systems, the British firm that conducted the March 19
simulation at Fort Hood, submitted its conclusions this week to
U.S. District Judge Walter Smith Jr., who is presiding over the
Branch Davidian lawsuit. A preliminary report sent to Smith last
month gave similar conclusions.

By comparing the simulation to videotapes from the last day of
the siege, Vector found that the 1993 flashes were caused by
reflections off metal and glass, including a helicopter canopy
and falling and wind-blown debris.

"We were unable to identify any gunfire, either from government
forces or from Davidians, from either the (infrared tapes) or
other collateral imagery available to us," the report stated.

The report also states that no one was seen prior to the breakout
of two fires that consumed the compound on April 19, 1993. At
least 80 people died during the inferno.

"This analysis vindicates those FBI people long accused of
shooting into the compound," said Deputy FBI Director Thomas
Pickard. "The FBI's long-standing and steadfast position that no
shots were fired has now been strongly and independently
corroborated."

But an attorney for Branch Davidian survivors and relatives, Jim
Brannon, said he believes Vector's analysis is "fatally flawed."

"Vector was either incompetent or they willfully sabotaged the
test," he said.

The fire started several hours into an FBI operation intended to
end a 51-day siege. The government has long contended the
Davidians themselves set fire to the retreat and caused their own
deaths, whether by fire or gunshots.

Vector was hired to conduct the test by Special Counsel John
Danforth, whom Attorney General Janet Reno appointed to oversee
an independent investigation into the standoff and fire.

A spokeswoman for Danforth said he would have no comment on
Vector's report.

Danforth's appointment followed revelations that the FBI,
contradicting a position it had taken for six years, used
potentially incendiary devices on the last day of the standoff.

Clintons talked of Willey letters

By Jerry Seper
THE WASHINGTON TIMES

The White House yesterday said first lady Hillary Rodham
Clinton spoke with President Clinton before the release of
confidential letters from former White House aide Kathleen
Willey, but claimed spousal privilege and refused to divulge the
content of those conversations.

Associate White House Counsel Karl Racine, in written
responses to questions in a $90 million lawsuit by Judicial
Watch, a conservative public interest law firm, acknowledged that
Mrs. Clinton "discussed the matter" with her husband prior to the
March 1998 release of the letters.

Mr. Racine said other White House staff members were advised
after the decision was made to make the letters public — a day
after Mrs. Willey said on "60 Minutes" that Mr. Clinton kissed
her, cupped her breast and put her hand on his groin during a
November 1993 meeting.

But, he said, attorneys for the Clintons said "the substance
of the discussions between the president and the first lady would
be protected by the spousal privilege."

The White House released 15 friendly letters from Mrs.
Willey to Mr. Clinton to rebut her accusations of sexual
misconduct. She had gone to meet with the president to seek a job
because of financial problems caused by her husband, who
committed suicide the same day she claims Mr. Clinton assaulted
her.

Judicial Watch, in its suit in the Filegate matter, sought
the identity of those who recommended or helped make the decision
to release the letters.

The firm says in its 4-year-old suit that the privacy rights
of former Bush and Reagan administration officials were violated
when the FBI gave the White House more than 900 confidential
background files.

The Willey letters have been ruled by a federal judge as
material to the Filegate suit.

Tom Fitton, president of Judicial Watch, yesterday described
the White House response as "bogus," and said the firm would
challenge the claims in court. He declined to elaborate.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Clinton was ordered yesterday by a federal
judge to conduct a new search for personal and White House
records concerning her suspected involvement in the Filegate
investigation and, if any are found, to turn them over in the
pending suit.

U.S. District Judge Royce C. Lamberth, in a 17-page ruling,
ordered that any records not already produced be turned over
within the next 20 days.

In October 1998, Judicial Watch asked Mrs. Clinton to search
for documents it considered relevant in the case, but described
her eventual hunt as "legally insufficient." The firm had
telephone records, reports, letters, computer tapes and other
documents.
Mrs. Clinton responded in February 1999, saying the request
was "overly broad, irrelevant, unduly burdensome and redundant."
She argued the request sought White House records or other
official documents not in her possession.
Judge Lamberth said that while Mrs. Clinton said she would
produce only those documents in her possession, she did not
"include in her response any document she does not currently
possess, but that she has the legal right to obtain." He said
Mrs. Clinton did not say whether records "not in her possession,
but still within her control" were ever searched.
"Therefore, because both Mrs. Clinton and her defense
counsel fail to represent that all responsive documents within
Mrs. Clinton's control have been produced . . . the court will
order that Mrs. Clinton, within 20 days of the entry of this
order, submit a supplemental response," the judge said.
"In this response, Mrs. Clinton shall explain in detail the
search that was performed, including the locations searched. She
shall also clearly assert whether all documents, including those
not in her possession, but still within her control, have been
produced," he said.

The judge also ordered the first lady to "describe the
parameters of the search performed" and include a statement that
all documents within her control have been produced.

He also said some Judicial Watch requests were related to
other inquiries, but they could be reviewed because they touched
on the misuse of the FBI files.

Those include the Willey letters and information on former
White House travel office supervisor Billy Dale and Pentagon
employee Linda R. Tripp.

  Subject: FROZEN - AOL

Thought I would share with everyone something that happened on
Tuesday night ... and I hope that you will all pass this to other
  AOL members.

While I was online Tuesday night, I was sent an IM that told me to
checkout the profile of another AOL user named CRAZY70707. Not
really thinking much about it, I pulled the profile up ... and in
big red letters, the word "FROZEN" was at the top of this profile.
At first, I thought it was some kind of a joke, but when I went to
click the profile off of my screen...I couldn't do anything...I was,
as the profile said, frozen. I sat for a few moments thinking the
joke would go away and I could continue my time on AOL. This wasn't
the way it was going to happen.

The only way I could get out was to cntrl/alt/delete. When I was
able to log on again, my computer was sluggish so I logged off
again. A few hours later when I decided to try again...I clicked on
my AOL icon and a warning came up that I would need to reinstall
AOL...it had been completely wiped from our system. When Alan got
home, he called AOL to see if they could tell what happened. When he
told the AOL rep about CRAZY70707, she pulled the profile up and
guess what... as you might have already guessed...her computer froze
  up as mine did.

We had to reinstall 4.0 and 5.0 again ... and we all know how much
of a pain that is. We have lost everything in our download file, as
well as everything stored in our favorite places.

I am sending this as a warning to you all .. do not pull this
profile up...whoever this person is, he's an idiot ... he's been
reported and I am hoping that AOL is smart and will discontinue his
membership. In the meantime, however, don't get stuck in the same
mess that we were ..and, by all means, pass this to as many people
  as you can.

Talk of conspiracy; see Madeline Albright's attempt to control world and Kissinger

Drug Control or Biowarfare?

The US is strong-arming Colombia into unleashing the latest weapon in the war on
drugs: a powerful new herbicide. But along with killing coca plants, the toxic fungus
may pose serious dangers to the environment and human health -- threats so compelling
that Florida has suspended plans to test the fungus for its own anti-drug efforts.

by Sharon Stevenson and Jeremy Bigwood

May 3, 2000

The big American suddenly stood up, leaned over the table and said to the
Colombian in a low voice, "You’d better be careful not to talk to the press!"
Dr. David C. Sands, scientist and entrepreneur, was meeting with advisors to the
Colombian Ministry of the Environment last March to push a new drug-war weapon
marketed by his company: a special toxic fungus which would kill coca plants. The
Colombian scientist who raised Sands' hackles had pointed out that the fungus could
also attack humans with weakened immune systems -- a condition common among the often
undernourished and generally unhealthy poor coca farmers and workers in the tropical
rain forests of Colombia, where Sands wants to carry out a massive spraying program.
"He didn't care," said the Colombian, who asked not to be named.
Sands is not the only party pushing this new biological weapon. The US Congress
is demanding that Colombia apply the controversial fungus in order to receive $1.6
billion in emergency bailout funds for Colombia's antidrug/counterinsurgency strategy
called Plan Colombia. Last March, Rep. Benjamin Gilman, R-N.Y., tacked on an
amendment to the pending aid bill requiring President Clinton to certify that the
Colombian government "has agreed to and is implementing a strategy to eliminate
Colombia's total coca and opium poppy production" using, among other means "tested,
environmentally safe mycoherbicides." Myco = fungus; herbicide = plant killer.
Steve Peterson, an official with the State Department's International Narcotics
and Law Enforcement division, says they want to see mycoherbicides used because they
would be "more cost effective and more environmentally friendly" than chemical
herbicides.
The trouble is that abundant evidence indicates that the only mycoherbicide being
considered for this purpose, Fusarium oxysporum, may in fact, in massive application,
pose serious dangers to the environment and human health. Florida has put an
indefinite hold on its plans to test the fungus for its own antidrug efforts after
environmentalists and a state official warned that it could mutate, spread rapidly,
and kill off other plants including food crops. And for over a decade, coca growers in
Peru have accused the US of secretly applying the fungus there to attack coca plants
-- in the process also harming food crops and farm animals. Moreover, the fungus can,
under certain circumstances, cause lethal infections in humans with weakened immune
systems. None of this, however, has dimmed US government enthusiasm for the project --
nor that of Sands' corporation, which stands to profit if the fungus is adopted for
widespread use.
Years of US-funded aerial spraying have so far failed to even slow Colombia's
thriving industries of coca plants, which produce the raw material for cocaine, and
opium poppies, which are used to make heroin. The country's cocaine and heroin
production has more than doubled since 1995.
The New York Times reported in early May that US-funded spraying of the herbicide
glyphosate (marketed as Roundup by Monsanto Company) may have exposed scores of
Colombian villagers to harmful toxins and damaged nondrug crops. But the proposed
Fusarium program, experts say, could unleash far worse consequences.
The UN Cover The Congressional hardball mandating fungus use follows a less
coercive approach to push Colombia into playing guinea pig for the first real
on-the-ground testing of the toxic Fusarium oxysporum strain called EN-4. The first
approach was through a United Nations Drug Control Program-proposed project to
establish a research station to conduct field trials for eventual large-scale
application of the fungus. Although the UN representative in Colombia, Klaus Nyholm,
said the draft agreement is "not what the Colombians want," it certainly reflects what
the US State Department wants and has sold to Congress. The proposed agreement turns
over results of at least 12 years of research by the US Department of

 Jewish Gene Study Reveals Origins

 By Discovery.com News

May 9, 2000 - A genetic analysis of Jewish populations has revealed new
clues about their Middle Eastern origins and new details about how the group
spread throughout the world, according to today's New York Times.
The findings suggest that despite the fact that they dispersed out of Israel
over 2,000 years ago, Jews have remained remarkably faithful to "the
tribe" - there has been little interbreeding with other groups.

Also challenged are claims that the Jewish population is largely composed of
outside groups who converted to the faith.

The results also suggest that, out of all other groups in the world, Jews
are most closely related to Palestinians, Syrians and Lebanese, with whom
they descended from a common population 4,000 years ago.

The findings, which were published in today's issue of the Proceedings of
the American Academy of Sciences, were reported in the New York Times.

The study, which was led by Michael F. Hammer of the University of Arizona,
compared the chemical sequence of the Y chromosome among men worldwide. The
Y chromosome, which contains the genes that make men men, is passed down
from father to son in more or less intact form.

As a result, examining its genes paints an almost unbroken picture of one's
paternal heritage. Genes in the Y chromosome do change over time among
different groups, however, so comparing the Y chromosomes of distinct
populations provides a window into how closely they are related.

Based on these comparisons, Hammer identified 19 main variations in the Y
chromosome worldwide, according to the New York Times. Jews and Arabs
descended from a group that shared eight of these lineages.

This ancestral Arab-Jewish population, in turn, may have descended from the
neolithic groups who first developed farming in the Near East.

Hammer closely examined the DNA of Ashkenazi Jews, who settled in large
numbers throughout Europe. Despite having been surrounded by non-Jews for 80
generations, the rate of genetic mixture with Europeans was only half a
percent per generation, according to Hammer.

"It could be that wherever Jews were, they were very much isolated," Hammer
 told the New York Times.

1 Putin Signs Law Implementing START-II Nuclear Disarmament Treaty
Deutsche Presse-Agentur, May 4, 2000

The START-II treaty on the reduction of nuclear arms by Russia and the
United States officially came into effect Thursday after a seven-year
delay.

In Moscow, President Vladimir Putin undersigned the law ratifying the
agreement which halves the nuclear arsenals of both sides.

Washington ratified the treaty in 1996, but it was then blocked in the
Russian parliament by Communist and nationalist forces which regarded
it as undermining the country's defence capability.

The new, more Kremlin-friendly parliament elected in December finally
ratified the treaty last month, followed by the upper chamber of the
legislative, the Federation Council.

Under START-II, Russia will by 2007 reduce its number of warheads to
3,000 and the United States to 3,500.

Moscow has warned it may still disregard the treaty if Washington goes
ahead with plans to deploy a national missile defence shield in breach
of the 1972 Anti-Ballistic Missile treaty.

But experts say that Russia will be forced to drastically reduce its
nuclear arsenal with or without the treaty since it cannot afford to
maintain existing stockpiles of largely outdated weapons.

The Russian law also makes provisions for a further START-III treaty
on further reductions by 2003. Preliminary talks began last year about
this next possible phase of disarmament. Russian currently has about

2 Moscow Rejects US Plan To Revise ABM Treaty Agence France Presse,
May 4, 2000

Moscow has rejected new US proposals to modify the 1972 Anti-Ballistic
Missile treaty (ABM) to allow Washington to deploy a nuclear defence
shield, Interfax news agency reported.

"These proposals are not constructive and cannot form the basis for
future discussions about this problem," said General Leonid Ivashov,
head of international cooperation at the Russian defence ministry,
cited by the agency.

"They represent an attempt to tear up the ABM treaty," he added.

US ambassador to Moscow James Collins announced on April 28 that the
United States had presented a draft agreement to Russia on modifying
the ABM treaty that would allow deployment of a limited national
missile defense system.

Moscow considers the treaty to be a cornerstone of Russian defence and
world stability and refuses to allow any changes to the agreement,
which Washington wants to amend to put in place a missile defence
system by 2005.

Russia is threatening to leave the START-I and START-II disarmament
agreements if the United States violates ABM.

The thorny issue is expected to loom large over a summit in Moscow on
June 4 and 5 between US President Bill Clinton and his Russian
counterpart Vladimir Putin.

The United States wants the ABM, which bans construction of missile
shields, changed so it can counter possible attacks from so-called
"rogue states" like North Korea and Iran.

But this argument is "misleading" said General Ivashov, since "it is
very unlikely that these states will have the means in the coming
years to strike the United States with such weapons."

3 Moscow Allows for Exceptional Cases in Nuclear Exports ITAR-TASS

Russia allows for exports of nuclear materials, equipment and
technologies to countries, which do not have nuclear armaments and
have not put their activity under control of the International Atomic

conditions.

President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree on changes in the
presidential ordinance of March 27, 1992, "On Control over Exports of
Nuclear Materials, Equipment and Technologies from the Russian

The decree's text, received by Itar-Tass on Sunday from the
presidential press service, in particular, runs as follows:

"In exceptional cases such exports from the Russian Federation to a
country, which does not have nuclear armaments and has not put all of
its nuclear activity under guarantee of the International Atomic
Energy Agency, can be done on particular resolutions of the

GIULIANI AND WIFE DISCUSS FORMAL SEPARATION

http://www.nypostonline.com/apstories/rudydonna.htm

NEW YORK (AP) - Mayor Rudolph Giuliani said Wednesday that he and his
wife of 16 years, Donna Hanover, are discussing a formal separation.

"Donna and I ... in many ways lead independent and separate lives,"
Giuliani, his voice halting, told reporters. "It's been a very
painful
road ... and I'm hopeful that we'll be able to formalize that in an
agreement that protects our children, gives them all the security and
all the protection they deserve."

Giuliani and Hanover, an actress and TV personality, are rarely seen
in public together but have refused to answer questions about their
marriage. They have two children.

The mayor reiterated that Judith Nathan, a woman he has been seen
with
around town, is a good friend. But he said the attention his
relationship with Nathan has been getting led him to announce the
separation discussions.

He emphasized that he and Hanover were working on "a separation
agreement. ... A separation agreement is not a divorce." He added:
"She's a wonderful person and an extraordinary mother. I'm very sad.
And I feel terrible."

Hanover has appeared in films including "The People vs. Larry Flynt"
and on TV soap operas such as "One Life to Live" and "All My
Children." She also is the host of a program on the Food Network.

An assistant to Hanover's spokeswoman said she was not available for
comment.

Giuliani, a Republican who is running for Senate against Hillary
Rodham Clinton, announced April 27 that he has prostate cancer. He
recently acknowledged that he was very good friends with Nathan after
tabloid reports and pictures about a possible romance.

On Saturday, Hanover held a news conference outside St. Patrick's
Cathedral before attending a Mass for the late Cardinal John
O'Connor.
Hanover, who at times appeared to be near tears, thanked those who
have offered her support since her husband's cancer was announced.

"I will be supportive of Rudy in his fight against this illness, as
this marriage and this man have been very precious to me," she said.
"The well-being and safety of (children) Andrew and Caroline will be
my primary concern in any decisions that have to be made, as has
always been the case."

[CTRL] Illegal Elian: Record 151 Agents used-131 INS 20 US Marshals

2000-05-11 Thread DIG alfred webre

from:
http://www.spectator.org/
The American Spectator -- June 2000

Illegal Elian

Elian's case goes to court tomorrow. In this preview from our next issue,
Byron York explains how the INS twisted its own rules to snatch the boy from
his Miami family.

by Byron York

Grover Joseph Rees was stunned when he learned the number of federal agents
who participated in "Operation Reunion," the raid to seize Elian Gonzalez
from his great uncle's home in Miami. The government deployed a total of 151
people, 131 from the Immigration and Naturalization Service and 20 from the
United States Marshals. "That's more than we used to deport Joe Doherty,"
remembers Rees, who was general counsel of the INS during the last years of
the Bush administration. Doherty, an Irish Republican Army terrorist
convicted of murdering a British soldier, was arrested in New York and
deported to Belfast in 1992. Fearing the heavily armed IRA might stage an
attack to disrupt the transfer, American officials made sure they were
well-prepared for any possibility. "We took a lot of extraordinary
measures," says Rees. "As I recall, there were 20 or 30 FBI agents and one
or two INS agents." It was plenty of firepower -- but just a fraction of
what was used in the Gonzalez case.

In fact, few INS operations -- at least those targeting a single alien --
have involved the level of force used in "Operation Reunion." Last August,
for example, the INS in Los Angeles required far fewer agents to capture a
suspect named Manuel Escalante, who was accused of killing 19 people in
Mexico -- lining them up against a wall and cutting them down with automatic
weapons. Nor did the INS assign as many agents to last year's search for
Rafael Resendez-Ramirez, the "Railway Killer" wanted for eight murders, whom
the agency had once picked up and mistakenly released.

Notorious criminals aside, the simple fact that the INS spent so much time
on an individual case is highly unusual. In recent years the INS has been
stung by criticism that its enforcement work consisted mostly of raiding
farms, fast-food restaurants, and other places where undocumented aliens eke
out a living. Looking for highly publicized, high-impact busts, agents
specifically targeted places where they were likely to find large numbers of
aliens -- and spent relatively little, if any, energy on time-consuming
efforts to pick up individual immigrants. "One-on-one enforcement is
inefficient," a former INS official explains. "They want to create a
deterrent effect."

In March 1999, the INS announced a plan to de-emphasize job site raids and
border patrols in order to target criminals aliens, immigrant-smuggling
rings, and document-forging operations. According to an INS statement, the
new "Interior Enforcement Strategy" -- emphasizing the mid-section of the
country rather than its borders -- was designed to "systematically combat
illegal immigration inside the United States by attacking its causes, not
merely its symptoms." Enforcement against individual aliens sank even lower
down the priority list.

Whatever its goal, INS has been plagued by gross mismanagement. Last year
Syracuse University's Maxwell School of Citizenship and Public Affairs
reviewed the performance of 15 federal agencies and ranked INS dead last,
saying the agency can't seem to get anything done. "Evidence that INS cannot
manage its mission is overwhelming," the study's authors wrote. "New
immigrants sometimes wait years to have their citizenship applications
processed; the backlog of people seeking naturalization is nearly two
million. At the same time, hundreds of thousands of illegal immigrants enter
the United States every year."

All of which makes the Elian Gonzalez case more than a little out of
character for the INS. The agency acted with extraordinary speed, devoting
thousands of man-hours and an extensive show of force to seize a single
alien who was not a criminal, was not brought to the U.S. by a smuggling
ring, and wasn't trying to stay by using phony papers. Why the case was so
important -- so urgent that the INS would throw its own policies and
guidelines out the window -- is a question the agency has yet to answer.

To Raid Or Not To Raid

For weeks before the April 22 raid, there was an ongoing debate inside the
Gonzalez legal team. Would the INS take drastic action? Or would it exercise
restraint and allow the legal process to take its course? Spencer Eig, the
Miami attorney who organized the legal group, tried to reassure his fellow
lawyers. "I said, 'I don't think there's going to be a nighttime raid,'" Eig
recalls. "Some of our Cuban colleagues said they thought there would be. I
attributed that to their experiences with the Castro government and thought
they were overly paranoid. I thought the U.S. government was not going to
raid an innocent family."

Eig's opinion carried particular weight because he had been, until just last
year, an experienced trial attorney for...the INS. After stints as an
adviser at

CNN refers to the study of the Waco FLIR video conducted by
Vector Data Systems -- which claims that there's no gunfire
on the 1993 FLIR -- as "an independent study." [1] The term
"independent" implies that Vector Data does not work for the
plaintiffs or the defendant, which is government. But in fact
Vector Data is owned by Anteon Inc, which DOES work for the
government, including the FBI. [2] The study is therefore
NOT an independent study. I found that Vector Data works

In short, the impression that the public is being given that

To further the impression in the public's mind that Vector

as an article citing Anteon's purchase of Vector Data states:

"Since then, Anteon has acquired Vector Data Systems of Alexandria, Va.,

Yes, that is the same Vector Data Systems, a subsidiary

May 4, 2000 NA (Network America) e-wire

Elian Child Abuse in Progress!

This Network America e-wire is beyond Rush, beyond Newsmax, beyond Sean
Hannity (of Hannity Colmes on FOX Cable). All of these newscasters and
outlets have been doing a cutting edge job of keeping alive hope for
Elian Gonzales’s freedom; without these sources, Network America would
not have the information we have on this case.

However, this e-wire will bring forth what the others seem to be leaving
unsaid – along with some of the excellent items that they are still
reporting and saying.

To set context, let’s look at former New York Congressman John
LeBoutillier’s excellent column on Newsmax:

“In the midst of all the furor over the Elian case is a most important
question. Why do those of us who are fighting to keep Elian here in
America care so passionately about this one little boy?

The answer reveals much about each of us. . . .

This seemingly insignificant little Cuban child touched the hearts of
many Americans because in him we can see the innocence and purity of
youth threatened by danger and evil.

First came the cruel seas of the rough Atlantic Ocean followed by the
obviously dangerous threat of sharks. Then his mother died right in
front of him. Can you imagine that scene? The drowning, the screaming,
the shouting, the despair? The tears? The not knowing what had happened?
The unfulfilled hope that perhaps she would still show up?

Not enough people have seriously tried to picture this horrifying ordeal
– and what a miracle that Elian is alive here in America.

His next threat came from Fidel Castro, who declared an all-out effort
to bring the boy back to his island prison. Inside that threat is the
unstated but obvious plan to "re-educate" Elian, make a terrible example
of him and then have him "disappear," as Castro’s daughter has
predicted.

And last but not least came the direct and dangerous raid to take a
screaming Elian away from Miami and back into the hands of Cuban
needle-wielding doctors and brain-washers and security men trained to
manipulate and terrify.

In the face of all these threats and adversity, Elian remains here in
America . . .
Those of us who believe that Elian must be allowed to remain here –
despite the good arguments made in favor of the father-son relationship
– recognize a simple fact: Elian’s rights cannot be taken away from him.

If he is sent back to Havana, he will have no rights. He will be a slave
consigned to a life of hardship, persecution and suffering.

America should not be in the business of sending refugees back to that
system. . . .

We who are fighting for Elian believe his case is a test. In a time of
unmatched freedom and abundance has America actually lost something more
valuable than material wealth? Have we lost that special quality that
made America the leading nation of all time? Have we grown complacent
and selfish? Have we grown so self-satisfied with our own lot in life
that we cannot empathize with others less fortunate?

The ultimate outcome of Elian’s case will give us an indication of
whether the American people are still worthy of those special rights
granted to us all.”

End of quote from John LeBoutillier on Newsmax.

Item: Despite his excellent and insightful commentary on the Elain
affair, why has Rush Limbaugh stated for the last week that “it’s over,
the kid’s going back to Cuba” again and again. Answer: Rush must not
step outside his establishment-assigned role (whether he fully admits it
to himself or not) as a sound-off safety valve for conservatives, while
never really upsetting the evil establishment’s plans. This “it’s over”
attitude is the kind of defeatism that afflicts good American citizens
almost across the board. Look at what a valiant fight a few Cuban
American patriots put up against the entire New World Order occupation
government for months. Rush had better stay within the bounds set for
him, or he will be toppled from all those 600 stations he’s being
allowed to be on.

Item: George W. Bush has put out the word to Congressional Republicans
that he didn’t want hearings on the Elian raid, because it might be bad
politically. This confirms once again that W. Bush is just as evil as
his father, behind all that good old boy smirking. Don’t be fooled by
the propaganda --- Bush and Clinton

[CTRL] NEW SHAPE-SHIFTING ROBOTS!

2000-05-11 Thread David Sutherland

A droid for all seasons

http://www.newscientist.com/nl/0513/droid.html

No job is too unusual for a breed of robots that reinvent
themselves IMAGINE an automaton that can design itself,
assemble itself and even kill itself. No, it's not the
liquid metal robot from Terminator 2--but this droid can
certainly build itself to perform a particular task, melt
itself down and recycle itself, say researchers in
Massachusetts.

The scientists have developed what they call a polymorphic
robot--a machine that can change its shape to suit the job
in hand. Shape-shifting robots could be used as planetary
explorers, or for search-and-rescue missions, changing
their shape to meet each new challenge and adapting to
strange and unpredictable environments.

The researchers have produced a simple thermoplastic-
framed robot, says Hod Lipson, who developed it with Jordan
Pollack at Brandeis University, near Boston. "All the robot
has to do is find a way to move," he says. The prototype is
very basic and has no sensors, so it is unaware of the
world, though sensors could be added at a later design
stage.

The idea is that a task will be set for the robot, such
as: "Figure out how to move using only one leg and one
motor." A computer will then attempt to design a body that
will help it to meet this challenge most efficiently. At
present, the robot's body is built using the "rapid
prototyping" technology common in the car industry, which
can produce complex three-dimensional structures very
quickly. A device called a 3D printer uses a nozzle to
build up progressive layers of thermoplastic, slowly
creating the required structure

Although 3D printers are large and cumbersome, says
Lipson, much smaller ones could one day be built into a
robot, allowing it to change parts of its body, for
example, to reshape an arm to produce a new tool for a
novel situation. Mark Yim of the Xerox Palo Alto Research
Center (PARC) in California says this is one area in which
polymorphic robots could be most useful. There's no point
in taking an entire toolkit into space, he says, when you
don't know which tools you'll need: a single robot arm can
be shaped to do the job of all of them.

It is also conceivable, says Lipson, that the 3D printing
technology will allow several materials to be printed,
including conductive, nonconductive and even semiconductive
materials. "Wires, motors and logic circuits, as well as
structure, could be printed in one pass without the need
for assembly," Lipson predicts.

With each new task, the look of a polymorphic robot is
impossible to predict, because each design is "evolved"
using a genetic algorithm. The physical structure, and the
neural network that will be the brains of the proposed
robot, are treated like genetic information that can be
combined and mutated in simulation to produce entirely new
designs. The "fitness" of these offspring is then evaluated
and the best are "bred" to produce more offspring. This
process is repeated many times until the design has evolved
to do the best job.

To keep things simple, Lipson allowed the algorithm only
basic components with which to design the prototype robot:
straight plastic bars of varying lengths and electric
motors that can extend or shrink the length of a bar.
Joints are all ball-and-socket designs, as these are easily
created by a 3D printer. From these basic parameters a host
of complex--sometimes lifelike--structures have been
evolved.

Some versions push themselves along on one leg, while
others produce a hinge-like motion and crawl about like a
fish out of water. Yet another moves sideways like a crab.
"The robot is ready to move when it comes out of the
printer," says Lipson. Its motor, however, must be inserted
by a person. But the aim is to make the robots totally
independent, much like the vengeful shape-shifter in
Terminator 2.

When the robot has performed its task, it offers itself up
to be melted down, so its thermoplastic components can be
recycled into another useful droid by the 3D printer.

The idea of building and melting down robots is novel,
says Yim, who makes modular robots that reshape themselves
by fitting smaller robots together. "I've never seen
anything like it." But he warns that to make truly useful
robots, stronger plastics and more materials are needed.

Serbs Mob U.S. Peacekeepers
By Memli Krasniqi
Associated Press Writer
Thursday, May 11, 2000; 10:06 a.m. EDT

PRISTINA, Yugoslavia –– Serbs mobbed U.S. soldiers with the Kosovo
peacekeeping force, slightly injuring one of the Americans before dispersing
early today, NATO said. The commander of the peacekeepers denounced the
attacks.

Elsewhere, thousands of ethnic Albanians packed a hillside just outside the
southern city of Prizren for the funeral of a former commander of the Kosovo
Liberation Army who in the past months had turned to creating peace in the
province before being gunned down Monday.

The slaying of Ekrem Rexja, better known as Drini, was seen as a setback to
U.N. and NATO attempts to reduce tensions in Kosovo. Drini had cooperated
with German peacekeepers in the Prizren area and had considerable influence
with the region's ethnic Albanian population.

Both incidents involving the Americans began Wednesday in Vrbovac, 35 miles
west of Pristina. A total of 200 to 300 Serbs "attacked ... U.S.
peacekeepers, throwing stones and hurling insults and threats," said NATO.
The injured soldier received stitches for a cut in his face.

Serbs attacked a patrol of U.S. military police in one instance as they
responded to an explosion that destroyed an abandoned house, said the
statement.

In the other incident, U.S. troops guarding a Serbian Orthodox church were
surrounded and attacked before reinforcements "calmed the situation."

American soldiers make up 5,900 of the 37,000 NATO-led peacekeepers in the
province, sent to Kosovo nearly a year ago after NATO bombing forced a peace
settlement in the province.

Lt. Gen. Juan Ortuno of Spain, who commands the overall force, denounced the
"violence and attacks on my ... soldiers who are here to solely to assist the
people create a peaceful prosperous community and region."

Elsewhere, near the central town of Glogovac, peacekeepers told residents of
the region that they had until Saturday to turn in any illegal weapons after
a search of several houses turned up two anti-tank missiles, 20
rocket-propelled grenades and seven grenade launchers, a machine gun and over
60,000 rounds of rifle ammunition.

Owners of any weapons found after that would be arrested, NATO said.

Near Prizren, about 55 miles south of Pristina, thousands of people gathered
around an open dirt field where Drini's body was to be buried. NATO
peacekeepers closed off most roads surrounding the site to control the
crowds.

"I just want to say goodbye," said Ismail Krasniqi, 62. "He was the
commander, he was the top person here in the KLA."

Drini was killed outside his house early Monday morning by assailants using
automatic weapons who shot him nine times. No arrests have been made but
people at the funeral blamed their traditional enemies – the Serbs.

"The hand of the Serbs killed him," said Isa Kastrate, an unemployed
27-year-old from Prizren. "He was really intelligent, a nice guy. The Serbs
don't want leaders like that."

Still, there was speculation that radical Kosovo Albanians interested in
maintaining a climate of uncertainty in the province might have had more to
win in eliminating someone bent on reconciliation and peace. Drini had been a
senior official in the U.N.-controlled interim Kosovo government.

Re: [CTRL] Big Bizness Wants YOU to Vote

2000-05-11 Thread nessie

What do you mean by "real democracy"?

Only direct democracy is real democracy. So-called "representitive"
democracy is a fraud and a sham. It isn't democracy. It isn't even
representative, especially as long as artificial people have more
representation than real people.

We're entering the twentieth century with an eighteenth century system.

This thing we have now is a fraud and a sham.

What's the difference between allowing the masses to vote

for hucksters in CONgress, or allowing them to vote for

the scoundrels on the board of directors of the Grunches?

Probably not very much (see above) but it would be better than this thing
we have now.

It would still be a fraud and a sham: a 'choice' between

*their* candidates.

Your probably right. I could go along with electing delegates, as long as
they were recallable at any time and only spoke for us and not for
themselves. But really, I prefer to participitate directly in the making
of any decision that impacts my life.

The tens of millions who perished

(under "state-monopoly capitalism") in the Soviet
Union had the 'right' to vote too, you know.

It did them even less good than it did us.

Personally, I never vote for candidates. It doesn't matter who holds
office. None of them represent me. I represent me. Anybody who says they
do is lying.

I do, however, vote on referendums. They're the closest thing to real
democracy we have. They don't do a hell of a lot of good, either. My state
voted to legalize medical hemp, but the feds still bust care providers and
buyer's clubs.

[CTRL] Tibet-China debate to be silenced by PNTR

2000-05-11 Thread DIG alfred webre

Dear Friend of Tibet:

We need your immediate help to defeat "Permanent Normal
Trade Relations" (PNTR) for China! PNTR would end the
annual human rights debate on China in our Congress,
which is where we have been able to spotlight China's
abuses in Tibet and urge for improvements.

The House of Representatives wants to vote on PNTR for
China the week of May 22nd-- **less than two weeks
away!**. Corporate lobbyists, in step with the Clinton
administration, are intensifying their campaign in
support of PNTR in hopes of furthering their business
interests in China.

We are making an urgent action request to all ICT
supporters to contact your Representatives NOW! Jump
to our Action Center here (be sure to paste the full URL
in your browser):
http://savetibet.wego.com/go/wego.pages.page?groupId=38613view=pagefolderId
=88020pageId=88027

ACTION
---

Please telephone your Representative's district office or
Washington, D.C. office and declare your strong opposition
to PNTR for China!

Your Representative may not know the following:

-- The annual debate in the Congress on Normal Trade
Relations (NTR) is the most important economic leverage the
Congress can choose to exert against China on many issues,
including Tibet.

-- Permanent normal trade relations (PNTR) are not required
for the U.S. to benefit from China's accession into the
World Trade Organization. The U.S. can maintain the status
quo of annual NTR extensions for China - as long as the
status does not lapse.

Constituent calls on PNTR will be tallied up and handed to
your Representatives as he or she leaves for the House
chamber to vote the week of May 22! A one-minute call,
short letter or an e-mail from you can make an important
difference.

Find your U.S. Representative at
http://www.savetibet.org/cgi-bin/congress.pl?cf=tibet/cong.cf

You can also find current phone and address contact
information, in your local telephone directory under the
government section (blue pages) or call the Congressional
hotline at 202 - 224 - 3121.

Visit ICT's Web site for further information on PNTR,

Thank you for your help!!
PLEASE FORWARD THIS MESSAGE TO OTHERS AND URGE THEM TO

The following excerpt is from a CounterPunch article on the
Corporation for Public Broadcasting's involvement in the

 [...]

In the context of the changes being driven by the CPB,
it is worth consideration that the heads of two of
the most important entities in American public
broadcasting both come out of the government's broadcast
propaganda apparatus. As mentioned above, CPB President
and CEO Robert Coonrod is a former Deputy
Director of VOA, overseeing Radio and TV Marti. Similarly,
recently appointed NPR CEO Kevin Klose has
been director of the U.S. International Broadcasting
Bureau and was president of Radio Free Europe/Radio
Liberty from 1992 to 1997. Thus, the question of who
controls public broadcasting and toward what end
merits the attention of thoughtful listeners. The
answers to such questions illuminate a view of the future
 of this important medium.

  The SEARCH for EXTRA-TERRESTIAL LIFE
What if Earth is not the only place

-Life would be a lot more interesting.

-Some people would try to control others

-The existence of more than one life
 source would indicate a probability
 of virtually infinite potential habitats.

-The forms would take on diverse and
varied forms, would evolve, and probably

 -The probability of other-dimensional
 intelligences would increase.

 -The probability would increase that
the life forms would attempt to create

-The probability would be that biodiversity

-The probability would be that older species
with greater intelligence and more highly
 evolved and developed civilizations than
 ours would exist.

-The probability would be that either we

[CTRL] Salon Article: The Hanging Governor

2000-05-11 Thread DIG alfred webre

From Abolish-L:

The hanging governor
Did execution-happy George W. Bush sign off on the lethal injection of an
innocent man?
 - - - - - - - - - - - -
By Alan Berlow

May 11, 2000 | On June 22, 36-year-old Gary Graham, who has been on Texas'
death row for more than half his life, is scheduled to be executed. If all
goes according to plan, Graham, who now goes by the name of Shaka Sankofa,
will become the 22nd person put to death in Texas this year, and the 135th
since George W. Bush became governor. Although Texas executions have become
fairly routine -- 13 are scheduled for May and June alone -- the execution
of Graham is certain to prove notable.

You wouldn't expect Graham to evoke much sympathy from the governor -- or
many people, for that matter. As a teenage thug, Graham went on a weeklong
rampage of 22 robberies and assaults. He was found passed out, drunk and
naked, in the bed of a 57-year-old taxi driver who accused him of raping
her, at which point he was arrested for the murder of Bobby Lambert. Today
Graham, who has been taken to the Texas death chamber on three previous
dates, insists he will "fight like hell" and "physically resist" efforts to
kill him, and he has called on his supporters to "take up arms to defend our
rights by any means necessary."

Given Bush's near-perfect record of spurning clemency requests in capital
cases (he's granted it just once), Graham's anticipated appeal would appear
a certain nonstarter. In 1998, Bush denied clemency to Karla Faye Tucker,
the cute, white, born-again Christian, despite appeals from the pope and Pat
Robertson. In February he signed off on the execution of Betty Lou Beets, a
62-year-old great-grandmother, despite evidence that strongly suggests her
own attorney -- who secured literary and movie rights to her story, and
later served a three-year federal prison sentence for extorting a bribe in
another murder case -- gave her miserable representation.

Nevertheless, Graham's case is likely to prove problematic for the governor
because the condemned man, unlike Tucker, claims he is innocent. A lot of
people believe him. Graham's attorneys will argue that his conviction was
based entirely on the testimony of a single witness who picked Graham out of
a lineup after first being shown a photograph of Graham by police.

Graham's case also resurrects the unpleasant question of whether Bush, in
his unstinting embrace of Texas-style justice, has tolerated the execution
of innocent people. That question has come up with increasing regularity
since January, when Bush's Illinois campaign chairman, Gov. George Ryan,
announced a moratorium on executions in his state because 13 innocent people
had been discovered on the state's death row since 1977 (more people than
Illinois executed during the same period). A supporter of the death penalty,
Ryan said, "I cannot support a system which, in its administration, has
proven so fraught with error and has come so close to the ultimate
nightmare, the state's taking of innocent life." For Ryan, 13 innocents was
too many.

Shortly after Ryan's announcement, Bush dismissed any consideration of a
moratorium on executions in Texas, insisting he is "confident that every
case that has come across my desk -- I'm confident of the guilt of the
person who committed the crime."

Not surprisingly, reporters immediately began wondering how many erroneous
death sentences Bush would abide. Seven men have been released from Texas'
death row in the past dozen years, including one under Bush, after courts
determined that they had been wrongly condemned. Critics claim the only
reason more people haven't been released is because the state has already
executed them. It naturally raises questions about the guilt of the other
people on its heavily populated death row (population 462, second only to
California's).

Conservative luminaries Pat Robertson and George Will recently got religion
on the issue, expressing concerns about the possibility that innocent people
may be executed, given that 87 wrongfully condemned individuals have been
freed from the nation's death rows since 1976. And Thursday, the newly
formed National Committee to Prevent Wrongful Executions, whose members
include death penalty supporters such as William S. Sessions, the former
Texas judge and FBI director in the Reagan and Bush administrations, will
call for a reexamination of the process that leads to wrongful death
sentences.

A short list of the committee's concerns reads like a legal brief of the
problems in the Texas judicial system, including inadequate provision of
counsel; short filing deadlines; limits on evidentiary hearings that prevent
defendants from presenting new evidence; and the execution of juveniles
(such as Graham, who was 17 at the time of the offense) and the mentally
ill, both of which Bush endorses.

Bush has, of course, found a receptive audience for his strong anti-crime
and pro-death-penalty position in Texas. But it is not yet clear how this

Three Towns Evacuated As Fires Rage Through Los Alamos...05/11/00
CNN

LOS ALAMOS, New Mexico (CNN) -- Nearly 22,000 residents of three New
Mexico towns were being evacuated
Thursday morning after a wildfire descended on Los Alamos, moving onto the
acreage of the Los Alamos National
Laboratory.

Grass and brushfires were burning in the southwest quadrant of the Los
Alamos laboratories. Federal officials said that
nuclear materials at the lab were safely stored, and protected from the
fire.

The fire caused evacuations in Los Alamos, Espanola and White Rock -- and
prompted re-evacuation of the emergency
command post from White Rock to Los Alamos.

Hundreds of homes were destroyed and many more damaged by early Thursday,
officials said. According to some reports,
up to 25 percent of Los Alamos buildings have been engulfed by the flames.

CIA-Drugs Symposium - Northwest
Press Release: CIA-Drugs Symposium

On June 10, 2000, CIA-Drugs Symposium NW will be held at Lane County
Fairground in the Wheeler Pavilion. Speakers, video and computer
presentations will explain and help citizens understand the true nature of
the War on Drugs.

A journey beyond the mainstream and behind the curtain to a "secret" world of
deep politics exposing corruption of both major political parties and
scandals that cut deep across our ruling elite.

Drugs is the BIGGEST industry on this planet. An unconstitutional prohibition
keeps prices artificial high, providing astronomical profits, overburdens our
justice and penal institutions, shreds constitutional civil rights and
engenders a hypocrisy that feeds alienation, cynicism and apathy—especially
among our youth.

This is a rare opportunity for citizens to hear, see and gather evidence for
themselves from several frontline players, authors and researchers.

This will be a daylong conference drawing researchers from across the
country. Because of the interest shown and the belief that an informed
citizenry is desired, the price for the public to attend sessions is being
kept to a suggested donation. There are three sessions—plus a free showing of
Daniel Hopsicker's documentary, The Secret Heartbeat of America—the suggested
donation per session is $7 or $20 for all day. Seniors, low income folks are
more than welcome to come and pay what they can.

A man-made crisis
Severe drought hits tens of millions across India, Pakistan and Afghanistan
By Deepal Jayasekera
11 May 2000
Back to screen version

Large parts of India as well as significant areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan,
where tens of millions of people live, are being ravaged by a devastating
drought. It has destroyed livestock herds and forced hundreds of thousands of
people to migrate to the cities or to irrigated areas in order to survive. Many
who remain behind are in a precarious position without access to adequate
supplies of food and clean water, facing the dangers of starvation and disease.
In what has been described as the worst Indian drought in a century, an
estimated 50 million people are affected in the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan
and Maharashtra in the west and Andra Pradesh in the south. More than 60 cities
and 60,000 villages have been hit. Many people are struggling to obtain
drinking water, their crops have withered away and hundreds of thousands of
cattle and goats have died. A government report has identified 11 states in all
that have been affected to one degree or another.

The worst conditions are in Rajasthan, which is suffering its second
consecutive year of drought. An estimated 26,000 villages and more than 35
million people—that is, about three quarters of the state's population—are
affected. In some villages, the only access to water is a tanker once a
fortnight, providing each villager with between 10 to 15 litres.
In Gujarat, a government report has identified 9,421 villages in 17 districts
(out of a total of 25 districts)—home to more than 25 million people—as drought-
affected. The report projected that the state's food grain production would
fall by nearly 30 percent and its output of oilseeds by nearly 50 percent. The
livestock population of over seven million head is also expected to plummet.
In the state of Orissa, which was devastated by a cyclone and floods last year,
around 8,000 wells have completely dried up in the worst-hit district of
Bolangir. The local government has begun to close schools and colleges and
restrict government office hours. On April 29 a train carrying drinking water
from Calcutta to the area was mobbed by thousands of people desperate for
water. Inmates in the district's Titlagarh jail rioted after being left without
water for two days. “Give us water or kill us,” they shouted.

The situation in the southern areas of Pakistan and Afghanistan is just as
grim. Authorities in the Pakistani province of Baluchistan say most of the
province's 26 districts are suffering from severe famine as a result of the
drought. The provincial governor Amirul Mulk Mengal said there was growing
concern for 20,000 families and more than a million cattle trapped in
inaccessible areas.
Last Monday, Pakistan's military ruler General Pervez Musharraf made a TV
appeal for donations to assist drought victims. His appearance came just a day
after the governor of Sindh province announced that 127 people had died over
the last three months, mostly in the Tharparkar region near the Indian border,
as a result of severe water shortages. It is estimated that tens of thousands
of people from Sindh and Baluchistan have migrated out of the area.
In Afghanistan the World Food Program (WFP) country director Mike Sackett last
week warned: “There are no walking skeletons yet, but without an adequate
response, thousands of Afghans in the southern provinces face a merciless
summer after having lost almost all their rain-fed wheat crops and up to 80
percent of their livestock due to lack of precipitation.” He announced that
the WFP had plans to feed 400,000 people—the poorest and most needy—for the
coming 12 months. The worst-affected provinces are Zabul, Kandahar, Nimroz and
Helmand, where more than four million people live.

The immediate cause of the drought is the repeated failures of monsoons,
including the post-monsoon period from October to December 1999, and the winter
rainfall in January and February this year. But the reasons for the calamity
are also man-made. Governments in all three countries failed to take long-term
measures to provide secure water supplies to drought-prone areas. Moreover,
little action has been taken over the last six months as the developing drought
conditions have become apparent.
In India, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government led by the
Bharatiya Janatha Party (BJP) only began to allocate some money for relief and
to send food, water and fodder for cattle to the affected states in late April.
On April 26 the government requisitioned navy warships to transport drinking
water to the drought-hit areas of Gujarat.
The NDA government is under fire not only in the media and from opposition
parties but also from its own political allies. At an all-party meeting called
to discuss the drought on April 25, Yerra Naidu, a leader of the Telugu Desam
Party (TDP), complained at having received

U.S. Backs Plan for African Force By Colum Lynch
Special to The Washington Post

Thursday , May 11, 2000 ; A23 UNITED NATIONS, May 9 –– The United States will
provide transport planes, communications equipment and other logistical support
to a Nigerian-led coalition of West African states that announced today it was
prepared to restore order in Sierra Leone, U.S. officials said.

A team of military officers from the U.S. European Command met with officials
in Abuja, the Nigerian capital, to assess what help the regional coalition
would need to conduct a military operation in Sierra Leone, where 8,700 U.N.
peacekeepers have been unable to prevent the collapse of a 10-month-old peace
agreement.

"We will support the West African deployment as required," a Clinton
administration official said tonight.

U.S. and Nigerian officials still need to work out the final details before a
final decision is made to send an African army into Sierra Leone. Washington
needs to consider the cost, which would be millions of dollars, and may ask
other Western countries to help foot the bill, they said. For their part,
Nigerian officials said their newly elected president, Olusegun Obasanjo, must
persuade the parliament to support the mission. And the U.N. Security Council
will meet Wednesday to consider authorizing the force.

Even if the force gets a green light from all parties, U.S. and African
officials said, it probably will take weeks, not days, for the African forces
to arrive in Sierra Leone.

"In principle, Nigeria is willing and ready to give assistance," its U.N.
ambassador, Arthur C.I. Mbanefo, said in an interview. "There is no way that
Nigeria would abandon this situation. . . . But there is no quick fix. And
there is nothing that is going to happen in a week," he added.

Since May 1, rebels of Sierra Leone's Revolutionary United Front have seized an
estimated 500 U.N. peacekeepers, stolen hundreds of their weapons and shattered
the credibility of the largest U.N. peacekeeping mission in the world. The
fiasco has fueled doubts about the world body's ability to conduct peacekeeping
in Africa and may erode international support for a proposed U.N. observer
mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Nigeria, a regional power broker that has repeatedly intervened in Sierra Leone
over the past decade, would form the backbone of the West African force. But it
probably would include troops from Ghana and Guinea, and it would operate under
the banner of the regional Economic Community of West African States.

In a statement welcomed by the United States, ECOWAS leaders meeting in Abuja
vowed today to "use all means at their disposal, including the military option,
to foil any attempt to take over power [in Sierra Leone] through the use of
force."

Nigeria already has more than 3,000 troops serving under U.N. command in Sierra
Leone. It is prepared to commit an additional 1,600 to 2,000 soldiers,
officials said, to a fighting force with a clear mandate to compel the rebel
RUF to comply with the July 1999 peace agreement that sought to end nearly a
decade of civil war.

Despite American support for the proposed West African force, U.S. officials
said they were committed to salvaging the U.N. Mission in Sierra Leone, or
UNAMSIL. U.N. spokesman Fred Eckhard said Washington and Moscow had agreed to
help transport nearly 3,000 Indian, Jordanian and Bangladeshi troops to bring
UNAMSIL to its full strength of 11,100 peacekeepers.

A Clinton administration official confirmed that the United States is willing
to ferry approximately 700 Bangladeshi troops, and possibly a Jordanian special
operations force of about 300 soldiers or some of the West African troops, into
Sierra Leone.

"We are going to provide airlift and logistical support," said the
administration official. "Now it's up to the United Nations to sequence this,
so that as the forces prepare to move into position, we will be able to see who
goes first."

Pentagon spokesman Kenneth Bacon said the United States has stationed the USS
Thunderbolt, a special operations vessel, off the coast of West Africa as a
precautionary measure.

Bacon stressed that there is absolutely no plan to send U.S. "combat troops" to
Sierra Leone. But a senior administration official indicated that U.S.
transport planes might fly into Sierra Leone's main airport at Lungi, just
north of Freetown, the capital. British paratroopers are expected to secure the
airport.

While the United States favors a Nigerian intervention under

Croatian soldiers will be deployed as peacekeepers with KFOR in the
Yugoslav province of Kosovo, Croatian Prime Minister Ivica Racan said
   in an interview on Wednesday.

"Croatian troops soon will join NATO forces in Kosovo," Racan told the

The announcement came while Racan was in Brussels negotiating with

Kosovo is a province of Yugoslavia, which Croatia split from in 1991,

GENOCIDE AGAINST THE SERB POPULATION OF KUPRES
COMMITTED BY MILITARY AND PARAMILITARY FORMATIONS OF THE REPUBLIC OF CROATIA
AND THE CROATS OF BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA
FROM April 3 TO May 15, 1992

From the military-strategic standpoint, the Kupres plateau is one of the
most important areas in the whole of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its altitude is
1,200 m above sea level and it covers an area of some 550 sq. km.
Geographically, it is a separate entity where Serbs have been the majority
population since time immemorial. At the end of the 19th century, they made
up 55 per cent of the population, on the eve of World War II - 55.6 per
cent. In the course of World War II, Croat fascists - the ustashi -
massacred 1 038 Serb civilians, 255 of them being children below 10. In
those days, the Kupres Serbs were massively fighting in the partisan
anti-fascist movement on the side of Western allies, i.e. in the
anti-fascist movement and anti-nazi coalition. More than 500 Kupres Serbs
lost their lives in the fighting. In spite of all their sufferings and the
crime of genocide committed by Croatian armed formations, Serbs remained the
majority population even after World War II. According to the end of the
19th century cadastral books, during the Austro- Hungarian rule, Serbs'
property included around 70 per cent of the total land in the present-day
Kupres municipality. Serbs, as the majority population, won the municipal
1990 multi-party elections.

On the eve of the war, some 50 per cent of the Kupres city population were
Serbs, 7 per cent were Muslims, and the rest were Croats. In the whole
municipality of Kupres, Serbs were in the majority.

When the war broke out in Croatia, a number of young Croats left Kupres and
joined the Croatian army, fighting in the Vukovar theatre of war. It was
then that the massive arming of Croatian inhabitants of the Kupres
municipality first started.

In 1991, the Croats of Kupres formed their military units which wore the
insignia of the Croatian Defence Council (HVO) and Croatian Armed Forces
(HOS). Members of these units were well-armed. They openly intimidated the
Serb population there. At night, Serb houses and apartments were marked by
special signs.

At the beginning of 1992, the Croats started to send their families - wives,
children and the elderly - away from Kupres and its surroundings, in the
direction of Livno and Duvno. Two last bus-loads left Kupres on March 24,
1992. The Moslems did the same, and almost all the men remaining in the city
were non- Serbs.

Alien uniformed Croats, who appeared in the streets, caused anxiety among
the Serb population, who feared that Word War II, when the Serbs from the
Kupres area had been massively and most ruthlessly murdered by the Croats,
would repeat itself.

The Croats then set up control checkpoints at roads leading to Kupres.

On 31 March 1992, Croats in uniforms, who had armed themselves in the
meantime, broke into particular enterprises in Kupres, seized them and
placed their guards around.

In the early morning of April 3, 1992, all of a sudden, from the direction
of Malovan, some 12 km away from Kupres, detonations and shots were heard.
Members of the Croatian army made incursions into Serb villages in the
Kupres area and started murdering Serb civilians there, or detaining them,
while torching their villages.

On the same day, at 6.00 a.m., from the direction of the village of Sujica,
where only Croats used to live, an attack was launched by the members of the
Croatian HOS and National Guard (ZNG) units and the members of the unit set
up by the Sujice Croats, who wore black uniforms with the U sign like the
World War II ustashi. The locals who had not

Detained Kupres Serb civilians were exposed to horrifying tortures in
several detention camps in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia until the
exchange of May 15, 1992 at the village of Zitnik, near Knin.

Their testimonies:

4.1. Witness 453/96-5, born in 1972, resident of Kupres, testifies:

...on April 6, 1992, soldiers with HVO insignia on their uniforms came into
our house, arresting me and my father. They took us to the Borac factory
and
placed us in a machine-room.

Before that, for six hours, we were held next to the bodies of killed Stevo
Lugonja and Drago Celebic.

When taken to the machine-room, we were ordered to take off our clothes and
footwear, and we were left in underwear only. They took our personal data
and ordered us to go two by two towards Sujice.

We were flanked by members of HVO, they were in front and at the end of our
column. It was cold and snowing. Thus, naked and barefoot, we were on our
way to Sujice, 22 km away from Kupres. On the way, they hit us with butts
of
their rifles, particularly those among us who were not capable to move
further.

At a given moment, they singled out Zarko Zivanic from Kupres and, before
our very eyes, fired several bullets. He was left dead by the road, and we
were ordered to move further and finally entered Sujice.

Once there, the Croatian soldiers tied our arms on our back with wire,
cursing our Serb and chetnik mothers, threatening to kill us, that we would
all end up in the same pits in which the remains of Serbs killed in 1941
had
been found. They beat all the arrested tied in that fashion with butts of
their rifles and kicked them with their booted feet.

They then loaded us as if we were sacks onto a truck and took us to Duvno.

We were detained in prison for civilians in Duvno, in the cells down in the
cellar. Two or four of us were placed in each cell. I was together with my
father, next to us were N.S. and P.S.

We were kept there one day only. Throughout, Croat soldiers entered the
cells and hit those in until we all fainted. They kicked us with their
booted feet, his us with rifle butts, weapon barrels and batons. They would
enter late at night and would beat us badly. They said that we would all be
slaughtered and that for us, Serbs, there was no life together with Croats
and Moslems.

Apart from beating us and threatening that we would be slaughtered, the HVO
soldiers took individuals out from their cells and forced them to have
sexual intercourse. They wanted my father and N.S. to do it, but they
refused it.

After being exposed to most horrendous beating, we were ordered to leave
the
prison where we were kept tied with wire, and the whole group was taken in
a
truck to the village of Brisnik, where there was a pit into which Serbs had
been thrown in 1941. By the pit, a group of Croatian soldiers awaited us
with wooden sticks in their hands, about 80 cm long and 5-6 cm thick. As we
were getting of the truck, tied with wire, they beat, one from the right
handside and the other from the left handside, each one of us with these
sticks until we fainted. When these soldiers got tired of beating us,
others
took over and resumed the same job, until all the detainees left the truck.

There, we were put in a garage in the basement, they shut the door and
released some poisonous gas into it - tear gas or sneeze gas, probably. As
a
result, we all started weeping, had difficulty breathing , and we were all
sneezing terribly. I do not know how long it lasted, but I do know that, at
a given moment, they opened the door, and took us close to the Brisnik pit.
Once again, we were put on the truck, beaten again, and taken towards
Duvno,
passing by it and continuing towards Livno - Borova Glava. There also was a
pit where Serb population from the Kupres area had found their death in
1941.

We passed Livno and the whole group was placed in the detention camp "Lora"
in Split.

Upon our arrival, on both sides of the entrance gate, Croatian soldiers
with
peaces of rubber cable, metal pipes 60-80 meters long or pieces of wood in
their hands made a cordon and beat us mercilessly when we were passing.

Close to me, Petar Spremo from Kupres had his head smashed, and he
succumbed
after some time. Croatian soldiers then started searching and seized all
valuables we had with us: golden rings, wedding rings, money, watches, etc.

We were ordered to climb the truck that took us there, and the truck
started
off in circles, in highest speed, braking suddenly, thus making us smash
each other with our bodies, since we were very close one to the other. The
truck was also making sudden U-turns to the left or to the right, which
again made us smash each other terribly with our heads and bodies. All of
us
were tied with wire, all barefoot and in underwear.

We were then ordered to leave the truck, the wire was taken off our bodies
and we were taken into cells. I was in a cell with 12 arrested, among them
my father. That cell was of a size 2 x 3 sq.m. The

The witnesses have the following to say about the consequences of stay of
citizens of Kupres in detention camps in the period from 7 April to 15 May
1992.

5.1. Witness 426/96-53 testifies:

... During my stay in the mentioned camps I had a right rib fracture, a
spine injury, a thorax injury. I was examined at Banja Luka and have
medical
documents about it...

5.2. Witness 42/96-51 testifies:

Before I was arrested I weighed 110 kgs and reduced my weight to 75 kgs. My
two right ribs were fractured, and now I feel pain in the spine area,
kidneys and other parts of my body...

5.3. Witness 426/96-63 says:

...After the exchange the physicians established that my two ribs were
fractured as well as the bones in my nose. I had a large number of injuries
in all parts of my body but mostly in the head area which is why I fainted
several times. Even now I feel excruciating pain in my head.

I remember well that they broke both of N.K.'s forearms in several places.
We had to help N. relieve himself for he could not do it himself...

5.4. Witness 333/95-23 testifies:

It took me about a year to recover from the consequences at Banja Luka. I
still feel these consequences. I have all the necessary medical documents
to
prove this. When I was taken captive I weighed 94 kgs and when I was
released only 58 kgs...

5.5. Witness 334/97-19 states:

...They broke my left forearm, my lef shin, 4 left ribs and they knocked
out
9 teeth from my upper and lower jaws.

After the exchange I stayed at the Military Medical Academy (VMA) for 21
days and I think they have all the medical documents attesting to the
injuries I sustained during my stay in Croatian camps.

I feel terrible consequences of the injuries sustained even today...

5.6. Witness 547/96-40 testifies:

... During my stay at the camp from 6 April until 15 May 1992 I received
blows which cause terrible pain in the area of the breast, back, legs and
all other parts of the body.

5.7. Witness 547/96-29 testifies:

... They beat me particularly in the area of the kidneys so that ever since
both my kidney have been damaged as a result of their blows.

I wish to point out once again that even today I feel terrible pain in the
area of the kidneys and my back as a result of the blows I received during
my stay in the mentioned detention camps...

5.8. Witness 426/96-51 states:

During my stay in the mentioned camps they fractured two right ribs and my
spine, kidneys and other parts of the body are still painful even today...

5.9. Witness 333/96-4 testifies:

...Apart from the many injuries which I sustained I think the worst was the
one I received during the beating on the firing range in Split because I
was
then hit in the head with a bowling ball, I was gravely injured and had a
bloody wound and I lost a lot of blood...

5.10. Witness 333/96-6 testifies about the consequences of the blows he
received in the head and face during his stay at the camp in Ljubuski:

... As a result of these blows I could not open either eye. My sight
deteriorated after this so I had to have an operation on my right eye on 13
December 1995 at the Municipal Hospital in Subotica. To prove this I have
with me the letter of discharge from the Eye Ward of that hospital, record
number 616...

5.11. Witness 333/96-10 testifies:

...As a result of torture and beatings as well as conditions of stay at the
camps my health status has seriously deteriorated.

These are some of the medical documents, seven in total, which show that my
7th, 8th, 9th and 10th ribs were fractured on the left side of which some
were fragmented and some dislocated. Three right ribs were fractured as
well.

My vertebra are injured, and as a result of all I have experienced I have a
high blood pressure, Angina Pectoris and other physical and mental changes.

The horrendous consequences on physical and mental health of Serbs from
Kupres and its surroundings who have survived and who were in a variety of
ways sadistically tortured in the detention camps in the village Stipanici
near Duvno, in Duvno, Brisnik, LORA in Split and in the detention camps
near
Zadar, at Vrgorac and Ljubuski from 3 April to 16 May 1992 are also
attested
to by the Report of the Mental Clinic of the Military Medical Academy in
Belgrade titled "Ill-treatment of Kupres Serbs during incarceration by the
Ustashi from April - May 1992" (case 281/97-5 enclosure 25).

A number of Serbs were killed in the course of terrible torture or died
following sadistic torture in Croatian camps:

1. Djordje Vukovic, died following terrible beatings in the camp in
Ljubuski, then his body was doused in petrol and put to the torch
(evidence:234/95-6).

2. Petar Zubic, tortured at the detention camp LORA in Split and then
murdered (evidence: 333/96-6).

3. Stojan Zubic, born in 1925 in the village Blagaj, father's name Gojko,
died as a result of torture on 10 May 1992 at hospital in Knin (evidence:
453/96-5, 281/97-3).

[CTRL] What's wrong with this picture? CEO's warn of high worker wages.

2000-05-11 Thread Nurev Ind Research

5/10/00
The richest, most overpaid layer of corporate fat thinks everyone
else is making too much money in this cycle of boom.

I don't see any of these clowns taking a voluntary pay cut. Do you?

If enriching the people who create the wealth and do the REAL work
is detrimental to the system, then why do we tolerate this system?

CEOs warn on wages
U.S. corporate leaders say booming economy adds wage pressure
May 11, 2000: 7:21 a.m. ET
http://cnnfn.com/2000/05/11/economy/wires/ceos_wg/

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. (Reuters) - Executives from large U.S. corporations
say
a note of caution about the booming U.S. economy was emerging due to concern
that a
continued scarcity of workers in a tight labor market would create wage
pressures.
The Business Council, a group of more than 300 executives, said business
conditions
were now either stronger or little changed from six months ago. But like many
economists in the private sector, they forecast a slowdown later this year.
Some of the business leaders saw inflation picking up, but most said their
companies
had little pricing power.
Citigroup Inc. (C: Research, Estimates) Chairman Sanford Weill, who serves as
the
vice chairman of the council, said Wednesday that 67 percent of its members felt
that
they did not have much pricing power and 73 percent did not see the situation
improving.
Although the group's members may not be seeing as much pricing pressure as U.S.
firms
overall, there were a lot of examples where costs were rising as the
longest-running
U.S. expansion continues and it remains difficult to hire people in many areas
of the
industry, Weill said. He noted construction costs as one of those examples.
Labor market conditions either remained tight or tightened further from last
year and
few members expected conditions to improve, almost all of the council members
said.
[IMAGE] "I see maybe a little bit more caution, not less optimism. That's not a
contradiction in that nobody here would have expected the economy to be this
good
(for this long)," said William Esrey, chairman and chief executive of Sprint
Corp.
(FON: Research, Estimates) in a press conference. "So you begin to see a couple
cracks and we're not sure where the first coat of paint makes it go away or if
there
is something deeper that is going to continue to develop. We are aware of a bit
more
caution and a redoubling of efforts (from last year)."
The caution was a result of the duration of the U.S. economic expansion and
signs of
increasing wage pressures and other costs beginning to peek through, Esrey
added.
At a meeting in the West Virginia mountains, the group said they were raising
salaries and offering stock options and other perks to compete for workers. They
were
also investing in labor-saving technology.
The forecasts come as the United States enjoys its longest-running economic
boom. To
ward off inflation in times of robust growth, the Federal Reserve has raised
interest
rates five times since June and is widely expected to lift rates by half a
percentage
point when it meets on May 16.
The U.S. inflation rate likely will remain in a 2.0-3.9 percent range
longer-term.
One-third of the council members believed inflation would hover at the high side
of
this range.
Federal Reserve Chairman Alan "Greenspan has taken the position of as 'steady as
it
goes' with 25 basis point rate hikes. I think they are going to begin to have
some
effect. We are already beginning to see (the economy) cooling off," Weill said.
"With
the economy growing at such a rapid rate and coming close to full employment it
is
appropriate for the Fed to put the brakes on. If it lets it alone and (the
economy)
runs away, it will be a larger problem in correcting."
Executives were cautious about prospects for global growth, but said Europe and
Asia,
except for Japan, held the best growth opportunities for their companies.
Eastman Kodak Co.'s (EK: Research, Estimates) George Fisher said revenue growth
outside of the United States was coming back good for them, noting that China
was
very robust. Michael Dell, head of Dell Computer (DELL: Research, Estimates),
also
said Asia was particularly strong for his company, with China growing 100
percent.
The executives all made a strong call for the government to grant China normal
trade
status.
The outlook for Brazil, which has recovered from its currency devaluation, is
"very,
very good," Weill said, adding that Argentina and Mexico were also doing
well.
He also said Asia was doing very well, with changes in Japan -- once they are
implemented -- creating a more welcome atmosphere for foreign capital. Citigroup
is
increasing its penetration of businesses in emerging markets substantially,
Weill
added.
DuPont Co. (DD: Research, Estimates) Chairman and Chief Executive Charles
Holliday
Jr. said companies may have to go to different areas for new opportunities as
cautious signs emerge in the U.S. economy.

Los Alamos: Mind Control, 'Non-lethal' technologies also developed there

Some points worth noting about Los Alamos Nat'l Labs, now about to burn
to the ground, from recipient Eileen Moran. She suggests that efforts to
destroy evidence of unconstitutional, malevolent research and
experimentation into various so-called "non-lethal" technologies at the
lab, including EM/RF mind control and related activities, may be behind
what seems clearly a deliberate action by the federal government to wipe
the laboratory out.

Dear Newshawk:

I would like to mention that Los Alamos National Laboratory is also the
site where research on "non-lethal" weapons was being conducted. Victims
of mind control are kept in line through the use of
psychotronic/non-lethal weaponry. They don't kill you with these
weapons, they torture you with them.

They can enforce extreme behavior modification programs through the use
of these weapons to "reward" desired behavior, and "punish" undesirable
behavior, by inflicting pain on the mind control target, and "disabling"
the individual.

Clearly, this may be a blatant attempt to destroy incriminating evidence
and records.

Since security at this facility was so piss poor they leaked nuclear
secrets to the Chinese, it can only be assumed that the non-lethal
technologies were leaked as well.

The victims of mind control and psychotronic weapons harassment are
becoming better organized. This is not the first indication that the
perpetrators of these programs are getting nervous. It is, however,
distressing to be faced with the fact that they will go to any length
necessary to destroy evidence in order to escape accountability.
Unfortunately, this allows these vile individuals to remain among us to
continue to perpetrate their illegal, immoral, and un-American activities.

Sincerely,
Eileen Moran

Los Alamos Burns To Ashes In Fire Set By Gov't

Los Alamos, New Mexico, and nearby White Rock are literally burning to
the ground.

The towns, comprised of over of 18,000 people, are primarily populated
by those who work at Los Alamos National Laboratory, are going
up in flames as of his writing. The laboratory itself has also been
scorched and is likely to suffer severe, extensive damage from the fire.

Now here's the "interesting" part. This fire was actually set by the
government: according to news reports from the area, it was ignited as a
"controlled" burn by the National Forest Service last week.

Now just a minute. Tinderbox drought conditions in this region of the
country had ALREADY been responsible for a number of severe blazes in
New Mexico and neighboring Arizona in the past couple of weeks. And
these Einsteins go out and set a supposedly "CONTROLLED" fire, only
miles from a national laboratory with nuclear and other massively
toxic materials all over the place! Does something seem just a LITTLE
bit wrong with this picture? It sure as hell does to me. Here in the
coastal mountains of northern California, for example, a good deal less
flammable than the semi-desert area around Los Alamos by ANY
measure, a controlled burn would NEVER be torched off in such prevailing
drought conditions.

Was the forest service perhaps manipulated into setting off this blaze
by some unseen agency, for the very purpose of incinerating this entire
area to ruble and ashes, INCLUDING the laboratory?

And, there's another related angle to consider.

In August of 1995, wildfires of unprecedented ferocity consumed
thousands of acres of pine woods and brush on Long Island--in close
proximity to Brookhaven National Laboratories. Although rumors held that
the fire was started by either a careless hiker or by an arsonist,
information brought out by independent investigators on Long Island
revealed a VERY different story.

Information brought out by these investigators and made public in our
report: "Montauk Air Force Station: Active or Not?" showed that the
PRIMARY blaze in this area, known as the Westhampton Pine Barrens, was
set off by malfunctioning top-secret particle accelerator/particle beam
systems equipment, located near Brookhaven National Laboratories
UNDERGROUND in the surrounding pine woods. Although various theories to
complicated to go into here do exist as to WHY the ultra-classified
equipment went haywire, there is little doubt that this IS in fact what
happened. Secondary blazes WERE in fact set by covert operatives to
provide a "smokescreen" as to the real causes of the original fire.

It seems at LEAST a possibility that something similar has occurred at
Los Alamos, especially when one factors in the extremely peculiar--or is
that stupid?--action taken by the Forest Service in igniting a
"controlled" burn during the exceptionally dry conditions which have
been prevalent in this near-desert region. I would say there is a strong
likelihood the National Forest Service was prompted to set this blaze
near los Alamos National Labs to cover up SOMETHING perhaps, as at Brook
haven National Labs in 1995, to cover up a fire started by
malfunctioning particle accelerator/particle beam equipment.

Los Alamos burns, thousands flee

LOS ALAMOS, N.M. (AP) _ A firestorm swept
through the abandoned streets of Los Alamos today, burning at least 100
homes while frustrated firefighters ran short of water and were forced
to retreat.

At least 18,000 people were evacuated from Los Alamos, including 7,000
in suburban White Rock this morning, where many evacuees had once sought
safety.

"We weren't ready down here. We were the refugee center for our
friends," Kirk Christensen said as he and his wife loaded their camper
and headed into a sea of cars crawling down the highway. They were
headed for a friend's house in Santa Fe, to camp in the yard.

No injuries have been reported, but President Clinton declared New
Mexico a major disaster area.

At the storied Los Alamos National Laboratory, for the first time shut
down by fire, flames singed a research building but it did not ignite.
Explosives and radioactive material were protected in fireproof
facilities, lab officials said.

"We can assure the country and New Mexico that our nuclear materials are
safe," said Energy Secretary Bill Richardson, a former New Mexico
congressman.

The fire was set by the National Park Service a week ago to clear brush,
but it quickly flared out of control, racing through stands of ponderosa
pine as it grew to more than 4,500 acres. Winds gusted to 50 mph
Wednesday and forecasters said they could increase today to 60 mph.

Civil war in Miami?
The battle over Elián has led non-Cubans to threaten secession, and to back a
recall drive against the mayor.

- - - - - - - - - - - -
By John Lantigua

May 11, 2000 | MIAMI -- The threat of secession is dividing the deep South. A
confederacy of Miami voters, incensed by the Elián González affair, is
pressing for a recall of the Cuban-American mayor, and, possibly, a partition
of the city.

"If we can't live with them -- I mean with the radical Cuban element -- then
let's live without them," says Annette Eisenberg, a fomenter of what has
become known as the Bayshore Secession movement. According to the rebels'
plan, the predominantly non-Cuban neighborhoods that hug Biscayne Bay --
including the liberal enclave of Coconut Grove and the downtown business
center -- would break away from Miami and form a city known as Bayshore Miami.

On Thursday the action in the Elián saga moves to Atlanta, where lawyers for
the Miami González family on one side and Elián's father on the other will
battle in federal court over the boy's right to be considered for political
asylum. Whatever the court decides, the hearing will keep alive an issue that
many Miami residents are ready to see resolved.

The idea of a Miami confederacy is a long shot. Attempts to divide or
dissolve the city have failed in the past due to legal technicalities and the
voting power of Cuban-Americans who don't want to cede relatively affluent
areas of the municipality.

On the other hand, a movement to recall Cuban-American Mayor Joe Carollo is
dead serious, its supporters say, and it may have political legs. They are
organizing in the wake of a series of divisive moves by Carollo after the
federal government removed Elián from the home of his Miami relatives April
22.

First, Carollo ordered the city manager, Donald Warshaw, to fire Police Chief
William O'Brien after learning that O'Brien knew ahead of time about federal
plans to snatch the boy, but didn't notify him. When Warshaw refused to do
so, Carollo canned Warshaw. O'Brien then resigned. "I refuse to be chief of
police when someone as divisive and destructive as Joe Carollo is mayor,"
O'Brien announced.

Those events sent City Hall and the largest city department, the police, into
turmoil. But the mischief wasn't over. Warshaw briefly fought his dismissal
and accused Carollo of having violated the law in the past by secretly
requesting illegal surveillance of 20 people -- city commissioners, political
foes and journalists, including the publisher of the Miami Herald.

Carollo denied those accusations, breaking new ground in hyperbole, in a town
known for hyperbole. "These are outrageous lies," the mayor said. "Warshaw is
the most evil man I have met. He makes Rasputin look like a child."

Some citizens challenged Carollo's comparison between Miami and czarist
Russia. They preferred the term "banana republic," and delivered bunches of
bananas to the front steps of City Hall as tribute to the mayor. But most
people aren't joking. Many non-Cubans in Miami are outraged that strictly
Cuban political issues have been allowed to unhinge their civic affairs and
have led to the firing of experienced non-Cuban public servants.

Both the police chief and city manager were replaced by Cuban-Americans,
creating an ethnic stranglehold on power in the city, and angry non-Cubans
blame Carollo. Several citizens' groups have cranked up the recall campaign.
The activists include George De Pontis of Coconut Grove, a chief political
strategist in Carollo's past campaigns for city commissioner and mayor.

"I've always been in his corner in the past. But Miami really needs
leadership right now and what is the mayor doing? He's throwing gasoline on a
smoldering city," De Pontis said. "Many people who have lived here all their
lives are getting the message that this is not their city. Many feel they are
not being represented," De Pontis said.

The recall campaign is targeting six Miami neighborhoods, including the
Carollo stronghold of Little Havana. "We feel that even there you'll find
large numbers of Cuban-Americans for whom this has all been an
embarrassment," he said.

This week, members of the recall movement applied for legal recognition as a
political action committee from the state government in Tallahassee, the
first step in any Florida recall movement. They say they will soon start
circulating petitions. De Pontis said they need 6,000 verifiable signatures
to achieve the first legal requirement, but they are aiming to get 6,000 in
each of the six neighborhoods. With 35,000 bonafide signatures, the Carollo
opponents can then demand a citywide vote on whether the mayor should be
recalled. If Carollo loses that vote, he must stand for reelection. Neither
Carollo nor his spokesperson was available for comment on the recall
Wednesday.

In relatively affluent Coconut Grove, where residents pay 15 percent of the
taxes and receive only five percent of the services, the movement should be

Quantum Confusion
The media loves Werner Heisenberg's uncertainty theory, do they really
understand what he said though?
By Trevor Butterworth
May 9, 2000

After a vaguely promising debut in 1998, The New York Times "Arts and Ideas"
section has often gone wanting in the big ideas department; so it was a
pleasant surprise to be arrested by a bold article on the new literary
zeitgeist by Pultitzer winning Times' critic Michiko Kakutani on April 22. All
was fine and perspicacious until readers hit the following paragraph:
"This is a literature at home with relativity and the Heisenberg principle of
uncertainty, a literature that embraces subjectivity and chance, and the
blurring of lines between the real world and the virtual."

A careful copy-editor, armed with either "Fashionable Nonsense," a popular book
that debunked the scientific pretensions of the lit-crit crowd, or a basic
understanding of physics, might have wondered just what that jumble of theory
meant, in a literal sense. Does Kakutani mean relativism or physical
relativity? After all, Einsteinian relativity is not even close to being a
synonym for relativism or subjectivism, and the uncertainty principle only
applies to the sub-atomic realm – not the everyday world of phenomenal facts.
Furthermore, neither theory has been made fully commensurable with the other:
Einstein being famously committed to a realist view of the universe and the
quantum physicists (Copenhagen interpretation, school of) being commited to the
idea that at the sub-atomic level, one can only speak of potentialities, among
other things

It's really hard to see how the new stars in the novel's firmament are
inculcated with such deep theoretical issues, particularly as few, if any, were
science majors.

Now it could be argued that Kakutani was just swooshing oil and water around to
extend the metaphorical range of science, and sure, don’t we all really know
what she meant anyway (so stop being so literal minded); but such points aside,
the fact of the matter is this: No scientific theory has been so eagerly
adopted and so grievously abused by the media as the German physicist Werner
Heisenberg's uncertainty principle (a.k.a. the indeterminacy principle). Here's
John Podhoretz from the May 5 New York Post

"Bush and his team have clearly grasped a central truth about the kinds of poll
data that have made Republicans hesitant to go head to head with Democrats on
these issues. They have understood the political application of the
'uncertainty principle' explained by physicist Werner Heisenberg. Polls are
snapshots in time. Public opinion can change and does change when politicians
enter the arena and alter the existing dynamic."

Sounds a lot more profound than "politicians have the power to change and mold
existing public opinion," doesn’t it? Here’s another snapshot of Heisenberg at
work in Campaign 2000, this time from the March 12 Baltimore Sun:

"On this day, the third layer of the bubble around candidates - the media -was
omnipresent: cameras trained on his every move, long boom microphones picking
up his every word. Inside the media bubble, the Heisenberg Uncertainty
Principle is in full flower: these observers certainly affect what is observed.
Amid such scrutiny, it is virtually impossible for anyone to interact with the
candidate in a natural, spontaneous way."

Some might call this the art of ‘dealing with a press scrum out to expose your
every gaff and misstep,’ but then they wouldn’t be grasping the scientificity
of the situation, would they?

Were patience a virtue, one could keep on and digging up examples from Nexis,
and adding anecdotes from book tours, conferences and lectures. Heisenberg has
infiltrated journalistic thinking about journalism to an astonishing degree as
an all-purpose, handy metaphor for the rather mundane point that sometimes the
presence of an observer can influence those being observed. To put it better,
it’s the MTV "Real World" effect – are they acting for the camera or behaving
as they would if they weren’t on TV?

In a related manner, Heisenberg’s uncertainty turns into a ‘scientific’
explanation about why one apparently can’t be an objective observer, and so
becomes a permanent ‘get-out-of-jail-free’card: "Don’t blame me for distorting
the story, it’s the uncertainty principle!" As author Susan Orlean told the
Minneapolis Star Tribune on Jan. 27, "I hate the pretend objectivity of some
journalism - that omniscient, third-person voice. I spend so much time with my
subjects that I'm bound to have an effect on anything I observe. It's a bit
like the Heisenberg Principle in physics - so why not acknowledge it by putting
myself in the story?"

Trouble is, none of this relates to Heisenberg, or quantum mechanics or the
uncertainty principle at all. At its most basic, the uncertainty principle
states that you cannot precisely measure the dynamic attributes of a

*Book says Carter ET investigation scuttled
May 11, 2000 08:15 CST

Add to the reports and legends of presidential experiences with UFO and ET
issues a new book that describes President Jimmy Carter's encounter with
government cover-up.

Written as a serialized electronic book by a former Stanford Research
Institute (SRI) futurist, "Exopolitics" reports that a White House study of
extraterrestrial communication was "secretly suppressed at the behest of
Pentagon officials" in 1977-78.

Author Alfred Webre alleges that the effort to cut off the study was led by
the Defense Department liaison at SRI. It was to have been undertaken
jointly
by the National Science Foundation and SRI's Center for the Study of Social
Policy. Webre says he was to have been the principal investigator for the
study.

Webre writes that the Carter White House incident is part of what he terms
exopolitics-"the process of government and politics in the Universe." "Is
there intelligent life in the Universe?" the author asks. "In fact, the
truest conception of our human circumstance may be that we are on an
isolated
planet in the midst of a populated, evolving, highly organized
inter-planetary, inter-galactic, universal society.

Earth is isolated because we are in intentional quarantine by a structured,
rational universe society." Webre's context communication theory of
extraterrestrial intervention was first introduced in his earlier book "The
Age of Cataclysm," published by Putnam's in 1974.

He's frequently consulted by national and international media on commentary
and near space issues. In the summer of 1999, Webre appeared on over 60
media
programs in the U.S. and elsewhere on issues of near space catastrophe.

Another book is a work of futuristic political journalism, "The Levesque
Cases," published in 1990 by PSP Books, Ontario. EXPOLITICS is published by
Universe Books, (http://www.universebooks.com).

attempted. In one encounter one aline was shot and killed. But the remaining
aliens used mind power to collaspe the heads and then brains of the humans.
The aliens allowed one human to live to carry the message of what happened
to
his superiors. After that, the US MJ-12 decided to stop helping the aliens
abduct people in exchange for technology. But another element within the CIA
wanted to maintain their unholy alliance with the aliens.
The beat goes on. Another clue, the fire could have been sent as a message
to outer space.

As I reported earlier, why start a "controlled fire" on a windy day? Huh?
This story is not correct. New Mexico, my home, has been in a drought
period
for several months...maybe even a few years. Bandelier is the home of
Pueblo
Indian ruins...a quite fantastic place! Amazing! And a spiritual vortex.

When we were at the fire on Sunday, the flames were visible miles

with the capricious wind, it was a no-win situation for the firefighters.
I
believe this fire was set by bigger forces than some anonymous
groundskeepers
at the Labs. These Labs and the town of Los Alamos have stockpiles of
nuclear products/waste, not to mention being the home of Oppenheimer's
Manhatten Project. (A few years ago there was an identical fire at Los
Alamos, which almost reached the labs. They were sweating bullets! My

CHEMTRAILS - BIOLOGICAL COMPONENTS IDENTIFIED

Biological components have now been identified in the two ground samples
previously analyzed on www.carnicom.com. Numerous red blood cells, white
blood cells, and unidentified cell types have been found within the
sub-micron fiber sample previously presented and submitted on Jan 20
2000 to Carol M. Browner, Administrator of the United States
Environmental Protection Agency. To date, Ms. Browner has refused to
identify the sample delivered to her by certified mail, and to disclose
those results to the American public. A visual analysis has now been
conducted with a professional quality microscope on May 7 2000 that
reveals the important discovery above. More information and images from
this analysis will be presented in the future. Depicted above is one of
two remarkable discoveries of clustered red blood cells which become
readily visible after being subjected to immersion oil. The cells appear
to be of a freeze-dried or dessicated nature in their original form
within the microscopic fibers. Isolated and individual blood cells are
interspersed throughout both of the samples which have previously been
described. The surface of the cells appear to be modified in some way,
but electron microscopy will likely be required to establish further
detail. Professional medical analysis of the images and chemical
analysis of the fibers, and the subsequent disclosure of those results,
now exists as a fundamental need.

The individual that provided the images herein and those that will
follow shall remain anonymous. I was a witness to the events that have
been recorded. The source material for the images presented herein has
been duplicated and distributed to numerous locations across the United
States, and it is secured by various methods.

The ramifications of this recent discovery establish sufficient cause
for widespread involvement of the American people in this issue, and for
subsequent Congressional hearings.

[CTRL] The Ruling Cabal

2000-05-11 Thread [to:] [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Part of message received about the recent shooting death
of an unarmed man in New York City by 4 police officers.
(41 bullets fired. The man was hit 19 times).

"an occasional overreaction by police is virtually unavoidable given the
state of upheaval in the cities. Urban America is a war zone and getting
worse."
___
Reply to the above:
YES...PRECISELY!IT WAS PLANNED TO BE THIS WAY!

A couple years back, the San Jose Mercury News ran the story about
the CIA bringing drugs into the country and using the inner city street
gangs as the marketing arm of the operation on the streets.
As you recall, that story touched off a firestorm of controversy and
official denials. The newspaper fired the reporter. Later, additional
factual material surfaced that showed he had reported the facts.
The Black Caucus in Congress initially called for a full-scale congressional
investigation, but they were quickly silenced!
Congresswoman Maxine Waters was a guest on a live radio talk
show when all this was happening. She said she was "outraged"
that the CIA would be connected to thiswith all the suffering the crack
cocaine had caused "her people in Los Angeles".
I called in to the program and said:
"You say you are outraged and that you have just found out about this.
wake up and smell the coffee congresswomanthis has been going on
since the early days of the war in Vietnam and has been well documented...
how could you not have known about it?"
She blew a fuse! She said in an angry voice that she had not known and it
was outrageous of me to suggest that she did and so on
ButI digress.
Here's a quick summary.
Drugs have long been used as a device to weaken and destabilize societies.
Read the history of the British using opium against the Chinese.
The Brits got the Royal Colony of Hong Kong as a result of the "Opium Wars".
France had "French Indo-China" as a colony for 100 years.
That territory included the famous "golden triangle"...which is the richest
heroin producing area in the world.
Go rent the movie "The French Connection" with Gene Hackman for some
more details on this lucrative business for France.
But Ho Chi Minh kicked the French out in 1954 when they lost the famous
battle of Dien Bien Phu.
Sowhat happened to the flow of drugs from that area?
Did it stop?

Of course not.it just flowed through a new channel.
The French Connection became the American Connection.
(Actually the CIA connection).
That's what "Air America" was all about.

Congressman Henry Gonzales of San Antonio, TX (now retired),
spoke openly about some of this back during the Reagan Administration.
Gonzales said that U.S. aircraft were flying cocaine out of Columbia
and Nicaragua and that the planes were landing at U.S. military bases
including some in Texas. That set off a firestorm of controversy.
Both newspapers in San Antonio ran front page stories calling for
Gonzales to resign for saying such a thing.
And then..a funny thing happened.
Eugene Hassenfus was shot down and captured in Nicaragua.
He was flying a planeload of drugsdestination Homestead AFB Florida.
It all came out in his trial and confession in Nicaragua.
More of it came out in Iran-Contra.

There's more.there's a lot more.
But the point is the "War on Drugs" has been phony all along.
It has been used to shred the Bill of Rights.
It has been the "created problem"built into crisis proportions
in order to apply "the solution". It's done in such a way that
most of the people don't even object to what's happeningin fact
they DEMAND that the government DO SOMETHING!
"Make it go away.make us secure.
Build more prisonsmore policemore courtsmilitarize the police...
whatever it takesbut make the problem go away!"
It's called "The Hegelian Principle".and it works!
The drugs and the crime problem in America are no accident.
The "Urban American war zone" didn't just happen.
It was planned to happen.
This same pattern and variations of it have been used
repeatedly to achieve the ends desired by what Winston Churchill
called "the Ruling Cabal".

And here is something at least as bizarre as the dead tank drivers.
The following has been reported almost from day one
of the events at Waco...but reported only by the "underground media"
and never by the alleged national news media.

Four BATF agents were killed in the initial assault on the Davidian Church
in February of 1993. Each of the agents had served as bodyguards for
Bill Clinton during the primaries and first general election in which he
was elected president.
Videotape taken life at the scene during the raid clearly showed
agents climb up a ladder to get on the roof. One agent laid down
on the roof with his weapon in a ready position, while 2 or 3 other
agents smashed out a second story bedroom window.
They climbed in through the window. Then the other agent who was
still lying on the roof outside the window, got up and went to the
window. He threw something inside and then fired into the room
with his automatic or semiauto rifle.
At that point about 4 or 5 holes suddenly appeared in the wall.
This may have been gunfire from inside or shrapnel from an
explosion, as from a grenade.
The point is, he clearly fired in through the window and into the room
that 2 or 3 agents had just entered!
I have seen that tape many times. Local television stations in Austin,
Texas broadcast that video repeatedly the day of the raid and for a
week thereafter.

[CTRL] Gee...Amongst English-Speaking Stern Is 1st In Miami!

2000-05-11 Thread William Shannon

Think his stance regarding Elian is a factor/
Bill.

Face the music - Elián gave Spanish station a big boost
May 10, 2000
The Elián Gonzalez contretemps might not have been good for South
Florida, but it was a boon to at least one Spanish language radio station.
News/talk WAQI (AM 710) saw its average audience share jump more than 36
percent and it soared from seventh to second overall in the Miami-Fort
Lauderdale market in Arbitron's winter ratings book.
The survey was taken during January through March, when Elián's fate was
practically the only topic of conversation on talk radio.
However, the dominance of urban contemporary WEDR ("99 Jamz," FM 99.1) is
impervious to outside forces. Not only was WEDR again No. 1 among all
listeners 12-plus (the industry standard for the entire audience), as it has
been for three years, it also was tops among listeners 25-to-54. This segment
is nicknamed the money demographic because it is the one most sought by
advertisers.
There was little other significant movement among the market's
most-listened-to stations.
Easy listening WLYF ("Lite," FM 101.5) was third in 12-plus, followed by
dance hits WPOW ("Power 96," FM 96.5), Spanish hits WXDJ (FM 95.7),
contemporary hits WHYI ("Y-100," FM 100.7) and Spanish hits WAMR ("Amor," FM
107.5). Tied for eighth were Spanish hits WRMA ("Romance," FM 106.7) and
urban contemporary WHQT ("Hot 105," FM 105.1). The Top 10 was completed by
smooth-jazz WLVE ("Love," FM 93.9) and classical WTMI (FM 93.1), which tied
for 10th. All were Top 10 stations in the fall book; only their rankings
changed slightly.
The continuing Top 10 presence for WTMI could prove crucial. An ownership
change is expected to be approved by the Federal Communications Commision any
day now.
There is rampant speculation that new owner Cox does not plan to keep WTMI
the market's only classical outlet. However, any format shift would be
measured against the potential to improve on WTMI's current performance.
Among listeners 25-to-54, the top five after WEDR was filled out by WXDJ,
WLYF, WHQT and WHYI. WZTA ("Zeta," FM 94.9), WFLC ("The Coast," FM 97.3) and
WBGG ("Big," FM 105.9) tied for sixth and WRMA, WLVE and WMGE ("Mega," FM
103.5) tied for ninth.
The Elián controversy also seemed to be a factor on English language
radio, where Neil Rogers abandoned his free-ranging irreverence to comment
and field calls on otherwise all-sports WQAM (AM 560).
Rogers always rules between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. in his target audience of
men 25-to-54, but he also enjoyed significant spikes in other categories. His
audience share was up more than 20 percent in 12-plus, as he jumped from a
tie for eighth to fourth. Among all listeners 25-to-54, he soared from 10th
to second, as his share increased by more than 30 percent.
News/talk WIOD (AM 610) also saw its ratings rise 20 percent and its
competitive position improve from a tie for 19th to No. 15 among listeners
12-plus. It also claimed the distinction of being the market's highest-ranked
English language AM station.
WQAM, which generally makes this claim, wound up tied for 19th despite the
boost from Rogers. It did hold its No. 4 ranking in its target demo of adult
males.
Howard Stern's nationally syndicated morning drive show on WBGG had one of
its best showings since entering the market. The New York-based Stern was
third in 12-plus (first among English stations but behind WAQI and WAMR).
However, among both genders 25-to-54, he was tops in addition to his
runaway dominance among his target, men 25-to-54.
WQAM's new competitor in sports talk, WAFN ("The Fan," AM 1700), failed to
register a measurable audience for the third consecutive quarterly rating
since it signed on last summer.

[CTRL] Elian doctors practicing without license?

2000-05-11 Thread MICHAEL SPITZER

[As I posted previously, I felt Elian had been drugged. --MS]

THE BOY WITHOUT A COUNTRY

Elian doctors practicing without license?

Physicians' group fears drugs used to recondition 6-year-old

By David M. Bresnahan © 2000 WorldNetDaily.com

A prominent national group of physicians claims Cuban doctors
treating Elian Gonzalez are practicing without a license, and is
asking state officials to step in and force them to stop.

Jane Orient, M.D., executive director of the Association of
American Physicians and Surgeons, told WorldNetDaily she believes
the doctors from Cuba are not licensed and may be using drugs to
condition Elian before he appears in court. She said a letter of
complaint would be filed today in Maryland.

Elian, 6, suffered a traumatic seizure when he was taken at
gunpoint in a frightening raid by government agents, according to
Orient. She said she does not trust the "glowing reports" from
unnamed government-appointed doctors that Elian has not suffered
any adverse effects from the raid.

"The child's being treated by Cubans who are not licensed to
practice in the United States," said Orient.

Does she believe Elian has been given drugs to control his
behavior?

"Sure," she said. "They may be using drugs, or maybe they're
just using manipulation, isolation, seclusion, and threats and
promises. I mean, how do you find out what's going on in there?"

U.S. marshals at the Aspen Institute in Wye, Maryland, are
holding the boy under guard. Many Cubans have been permitted to
be with him, but lawyers, doctors, the press and even elected
officials have been prevented from observing Elian.

Drugs were confiscated from the Cubans as they entered the U.S.
and again when they left, according to several press reports.
Orient said one drug involved was Meprobamate, which is also
known as Miltown.

"I don't think it's used very much in this country at all
anymore. It's certainly not supposed to be used on children,"
Orient explained. She said it is an anti-anxiety drug used to
"calm the person down and make him more amenable to whatever
suggestions his keepers want to make. I suppose for many people
it just has a mind-numbing effect."

Insulin was also confiscated by U.S. officials, which caused
Orient concern.

"Certainly that's a method of psychological torture, or even life
threatening to induce insulin shock in somebody," she told
WorldNetDaily in a phone interview.

"What we're going to do now is, we're calling on the state of
Maryland to throw those Cuban doctors out. The State Department
may have let them in, but it's up to the states who can practice
medicine in individual states," said Kathryn Serkes, spokesperson
for the group.

Orient has already asked Attorney General Janet Reno to prevent
the Cuban doctors from treating Elian on the grounds that they do
not have a license to practice here. Her letter has gone
unanswered, so now she is taking her complaint to the state of
Maryland.

Orient sent letters to Reno and Immigration and Naturalization
Service Commissioner, Doris Meissner, asking them to disclose the
names and backgrounds of all government-appointed medical
personnel involved in the treatment or evaluation of the boy,
including psychiatrists and psychologists. There has been no
response.

"We are extremely concerned about Elian's physical and emotional
well-being. Based on the experience of the past two weeks, we're
not confident that the glowing reports from anonymous government
doctors of the boy's easy adjustment following a traumatic
seizure at gunpoint are indeed, unbiased, or for that matter,
first-hand," said Orient in the letters.

Elian's personal doctor has also expressed great concern over
what has happened, and she has not been permitted to see Elian
since he was taken and placed in seclusion.

"The bottom line is, you've got Dr. Lydia Usategui who was
legally treating the boy with the permission of the guardians.
She was tear gassed the morning of the raid. Then Elian's handed
over to Cuban doctors who are in this country practicing
illegally. So if the feds won't do anything about it, we're
going to the state of Maryland and calling for them to tell these
doctors that they can't practice in the U.S. without a license,"
explained Serkes.

Both Usategui and her husband Alfred Manrara were present during
the government raid to take the boy by force.

"On the day of the raid by federal agents, Lydia was on the back
porch of Lazaro's home and had a submachine gun pointed at her as
she was told to lie on the ground and look down, then they
sprayed pepper gas at her as they departed," explained Manrara in
a written report provided to WorldNetDaily.

"Her intention had been to be inside the home next to the child
to witness (as a psychiatrist) how the Justice Department would
do the removal of the child from his Miami family (never
imagining that it would be violent or with such brutal force),"
wrote Manrara. "However, as the federal agents approached the

USA*ENGAGE Cites Importance of China PNTR
Vote on Upcoming Congressional Report Card

Washington, D.C. – Signaling the significant emphasis
that the business community will be placing on the
upcoming China permanent normal trade relations (PNTR)
vote, USA*ENGAGE today announced that the vote would
receive "double counting" on its next Congressional
   Report Card.

The USA*ENGAGE - National Foreign Trade Council Report
Card, also issued in 1998 and 1999, grades Members of the
U.S. Senate and House of Representatives on individual
voting records on issues affecting international trade,
unilateral sanctions, and global engagement. The report
card has been widely recognized as one of the most
accurate, fair and bipartisan representations of where
Members of Congress stand on the trade issues of greatest
   interest to America’s business community.

"The China vote won’t quickly evaporate into the
political fog. Rather, it is a vote that will change
history. PNTR is the most important trade vote that any
Congress has faced for many years. A double count is
clearly warranted," said Bill Lane, Washington Government
Affairs Director for Caterpillar, Inc. and Chairman of
   USA*ENGAGE.

Lane indicated that the next edition of the report card
would be issued prior to this summer’s party conventions
and the fall campaign season. For the first half of the
   106th Congressional session 14 Republicans and 10
Democrats in the Senate received "A" or "A+"; and 67
Republicans and 25 Democrats in the House received "A" or
   "A+."

"The report card has been a useful reference tool to help
companies identify both Members that are supportive of
the trade and engagement agenda, and those that more
readily embrace sanctions and isolationism. In the 1998
election, it is no coincidence that every Member of
Congress who received an A or A+ rating, and then ran for
   reelection – won," Lane concluded.

USA*ENGAGE is a coalition of 670 small and large
businesses, agriculture groups and trade associations
working to seek alternatives to the proliferation of
unilateral U.S. foreign policy sanctions and to promote
the benefits of U.S. engagement abroad. For more
information on USA*ENGAGE and the harmful effects of
unilateral trade sanctions, visit the USA*ENGAGE web site
   at www.USAENGAGE.org.

[CTRL] Secret White House phone recordings

Secret White House phone recordings

High-tech mike permits officials
to eavesdrop on staff conversations

By Paul Sperry
© 2000 WorldNetDaily.com

WASHINGTON -- In what sounds like something from one of Ian
Fleming's or George Orwell's books, President Clinton signed off
on the installation of eavesdropping devices on the phones of
White House staffers, WorldNetDaily has learned.

The secret bug means there's a strong likelihood that audio-tape
recordings of personal White House phone conversations, as well
as White House staff meetings, exist -- unbeknown to
investigators who have subpoenaed all media containing
information relevant to their probes of several White House
scandals. Clinton has denied the existence of tape recordings.

But that's not all.

At the same time, the president had "a special box" installed on
his and his top aides' phones so that their phone conversations
and meetings could not be recorded using the same technology,
says the technician who ran the White House phone operations for
several years.

Despite the high-level safeguards, the Secret Service objected to
the phone eavesdropping devices, arguing they posed a serious
national security risk.

Indeed, the FBI has been investigating allegations that Israeli
spies penetrated the White House phone system, as first reported
by Insight magazine last week.

The changes were made after Clinton, in a surprise move, hired
ATT to replace a five-year-old phone switch in the White House,
along with the software and all the desk phone hardware, soon
after he took office.

All the changes, which included turning off software features
that record the dialer of overseas calls, were completed by 1996.
The switch was brought on line in 1994.

"White House officials went to ATT and Bell Labs and had them
develop a special box to put on these phones for some of the very
top people, so this (eavesdropping) couldn't be done," said
former White House phone manager Sheryl Hall in an exclusive
interview with WorldNetDaily.

"It's only some of the phones that have this special box on
them," which blocks the remote recording feature, she added.
"They (Clinton and top aides) can look down, but no one can look
up."

The rest of White House staffers are vulnerable to having their
phone conversations recorded from remote locations elsewhere in
the White House. Meetings in conference rooms can also be
recorded via the new phone system, Hall says.

So, although the recording feature has been blocked on Clinton's
Oval Office phones, there could be a record of his conversations
with staffers in conference-room meetings.

"With the switch they have now at the White House, you can turn
those phones on from another area, and it becomes a microphone in
that room," Hall said.

"It's a big security risk, and the Secret Service will attest to
that. They didn't want this switch because of that," she added.
"So it's possible to turn on the phone (and) record what's being
said in the room."

During a year-long probe of possible White House espionage, FBI
counterspies have "uncovered what appears to be sophisticated
means to listen in on conversations from remote telephone sites
with capabilities of providing real-time audio feeds directly to
Tel Aviv," said Insight, citing a U.S. official familiar with the
FBI probe.

The suspected spying included foreign eavesdropping on phone
calls to and from the White House and National Security Council.

"Details of how this could have been pulled off are highly
guarded," the report went on. But according to a U.S.
intelligence source, "the access had to be done in such a way as
to evade our countermeasures. ... That's what's most
disconcerting."

Hall says the new phone system, which cost more than $25 million,
can record conversations for instant review from remote sites.

"Because it's more computerized, and has a lot more capabilities,
the microphone can be turned on (and) you can record in most of
the OEOB (Old Executive Office Building) and the new building
(Eisenhower Executive Office Building, where Vice President Al
Gore's offices are located). Wherever there are conference rooms,
you can record what's in there," Hall told WorldNetDaily.

"It technically has the capability to go from that room to the
disk, on the (phone) switch, and send it somewhere, and print it
off and look and see who said what and at what time of day," said
Hall, a career civil servant who worked in the White House from
1992 to 1999.

Clinton has maintained all along that, unlike President Nixon, he
installed no listening devices in the White House. Nixon resigned
after the high court forced him to hand over Oval Office tapes on
which he could be heard approving a cover-up of the Watergate
break-in.

In fact, Clinton first denied the existence of any recordings the
same year ATT's new PBX switch went on-line in the White House.

In a March 8, 1994, news conference regarding the Whitewater
investigation, Clinton was asked if he knew of

[CTRL] BREAKING: the columbia connection-algore big oil

2000-05-11 Thread Bard

The Colombian Connection: Al Gore Big Oil
NewsMax.com
http://www.newsmax.com

Friday, May 12, 2000

It’s a major scandal waiting to break, the story of a Colombian tribe of Indians, a
major oil company and the vice president of the United
States.
In a startling expose in the current issue of The Nation, writer Ken Silverstein
uncovers the shocking tale of Gore’s historical super-close
connection to the giant Occidental Petroleum company, its ongoing attempts to despoil
the U’wa tribal ancestral homeland, and the shady role
the Clinton administration is playing behind the scenes.

And the expose is given more weight in view of the fact that it appears in an ultra
left-wing publication one would expect to be backing
ultra liberal Al Gore’s presidential bid to the hilt.

Briefly, the dispute, which turned violent when Colombian security forces used tear
gas against members of the tribe demonstrating against
Occidental’s drilling plans, resulting in the subsequent death of three children who
drowned when fleeing the melee, involves the company’s
plan to drill on U’wa tribal land, which the company believes holds 1.4 billion
barrels of oil worth about $35 billion in today’s prices.

Interestingly, in view of Gore’s pretensions to be a dedicated environmentalist, one
of the principal objections to Occidental’s drilling is
its record of disastrous oil spills from its Caño Limon pipeline, just north of U'wa
land and repeatedly bombed by guerrillas. The spills,
Silverstein reports, have badly polluted rivers and lakes.

"The Colombian Oil Workers' Union published a report in 1997 saying that Caño Limon is
‘the best example that petroleum exploitation should
not be permitted [on the U’wa reservation] at any price,’" he wrote.

Silverstein says the U’wa opposition to Occidental’s plans represents something of a
last stand. "A 1998 report by Terry Freitas — one of
three U'wa supporters from the United States killed by leftist guerrillas while
visiting the tribe's territory last year — says that the
Colombian government stripped the tribe of 85 percent of its land between 1940 and
1970,” he explained.

He quotes Roberto Perez, president of the Traditional Authority of the U'wa People, as
saying: "The key issue for indigenous groups is
defending our territory ... The Occidental project is an affront to our livelihood,
our lives and our culture."

Gore has repeatedly refused pleas from fellow Democrats to meet with Perez.

Rep. Cynthia McKinney of Georgia, for example, told Silverstein she wrote to Gore and
asked him to meet with U'wa leader Perez and to
support an immediate suspension of the Occidental project.

"I am concerned that the operations of oil companies, and in particular Occidental
Petroleum, are exacerbating an already explosive
situation, with disastrous consequences for the local indigenous people," she wrote.
"I am contacting you because you have remained silent
on this issue despite your strong financial interests and family ties with Occidental."

She wrote to Gore again on March 30 to complain about his failure to answer her
previous letter. Finally Gore sent her a note saying he
simply didn’t have the time to meet with Perez.

Most fascinating is the historical connection between the Gore family and Occidental
Petroleum, in which Gore holds about a quarter of a
million dollars worth of stock in trust for his mother. The connection goes back to
Gore’s father’s close relationship with the late Armand
Hammer, Occidental’s founder and the son of Julius Hammer, the man who founded the
U.S. Communist Party. For all of his life, Armand Hammer
remained close to the murderous Joseph Stalin, his successors and the entire Soviet
leadership during the Cold War.

He also remained close to Albert Gore Sr., and later to Al Jr., bestowing his largesse
lavishly on both.

Hammer, Silverstein notes, liked to brag that he had Gore Sr. "in my back pocket."

When Gore Sr. retired from the Senate in 1970, he got a $500,000-a-year job at a
subsidiary of Occidental as well as a company directorship.
When the elder Gore died, his estate included hundreds of thousands of dollars' worth
of Occidental stock.

In the 1960s, Silverstein reports, the Gores discovered zinc ore near land they owned
in Tennessee. "Through a company subsidiary Hammer
bought the land for $160,000 - twice the amount offered by the only other bidder. He
swiftly sold the land back to Al Gore Sr. and agreed to
pay him $20,000 a year for mining rights.”

Gore Sr. then sold the property for $140,000 to Al Jr., who has gotten a $20,000 check
just about every year since, although Occidental has
never mined an ounce of zinc or anything else on the property.

In 1985, Al Jr. leased the property to Union Zinc, a competitor of Occidental.

In his book, "Witness to History," Neil Lyndon, an employee on Hammer's personal staff
and the ghost writer of his memoirs, revealed that
whenever Hammer he came to Washington he met with Al Gore

Re: Zealous Representation of Elian Gonzalez

Dear Kendall:

When you became a lawyer, you took an oath to abide by the Rules of
Professional Conduct governing members of The Florida Bar. These rules
require that you represent your clients "with zeal" (Rule 4-1.3) and
that you "may not withhold information from a client to serve the
lawyer's own interest or convenience" (also Rule 4-1.3).

Even though I have been covering this story for NewsMax.com, I am also a
lawyer familiar with the ethical mandates of our mutual profession.
Congressional staff have told me that you yourself have admitted to them
that you will not file with the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals
certain papers that would prove the misconduct of the Attorney General
of the United States because you fear "the political fall-out" that
would result from any embarrassment to her.

Alerting the 11th Circuit to such misconduct is crucial, as you know, in
securing your client, Elian Gonzalez, the full measure of the due
process and all the remedies available to him in this appellate court.

Your reluctance to take on this Justice Department frontally and fully
appears to stem from the fact that you a) were a past political
supporter of and fund raiser for Janet Reno, b) were the beneficiary of
Reno's political patronage when she appointed you to be her U.S.
Attorney here in Miami in 1993, despite news reportage at the time that
you had no background in prosecution and criminal law, c) were former
counsel for the Democratic Party, and d) have represented and may still
represent individuals alleged to have made illegal campaign
contributions to the Democratic National Committee - the very same
contributions Janet Reno refuses to investigate.
Further, the Assistant Chairman of the Miami Dade County Democratic
Party has told me, in front of another witness: "I brought Kendall
Coffey into this case because of who he is." Later in the conversation,
held right in front of Lazaro Gonzalez' home days before the illegal
raid, this same Democratic political operative said: "There are certain
things that our team will not do on behalf of Elian and the family
because it is not good to anger your enemies."

Last week, Judge Andrew Napolitano presented to the nation on the pages
of The Wall Street Journal the scholarly legal argument that the raid
was based upon a "tissue of lies." In that article, which has been
circulated to all the staffs on Capitol Hill, Judge Napolitano mentions
Miami lawyer Richard Sharpstein, who became part of Elian's and the
family's legal team more than a week ago. Judge Napolitano explained
that Mr. Sharpstein would be arguing to the 11th Circuit the various
ways in which the illegal actions of Reno and her Justice Department
would provide a basis for affording Elian relief.

But such arguments have not been made. You are the one who has not
allowed them to be made. Why? Because you are apparently, as indicated
above, beholden to a local Democratic Party establishment, chock full of
Reno loyalists, who would make it difficult for you to earn a living
representing the types of people you represent if you were to zealously
represent Elian and in a way that would embarrass Reno and undo her
"tissue of lies."

You don't have the stomach to go belly to belly with this Attorney
General, because of the personal inconvenience it would cause you. You
are unable to represent your clients with zeal because of past and
continuing allegiances. You should have declined representation in this
case because of

The 'Fisherman' and His 'Bride'

More on the life of Donato Dalyrmple

By Catharine Skipp and Joseph Contreras

When the six-month custody battle over Elián González resumed in
a federal appellate court in Atlanta on Thursday morning, one
person was conspicuous in his absence. Donato Dalrymple, the man
who once took credit for rescuing the Cuban boy off the coast of
Florida, was nowhere near the courtroom. Dalrymple, of course,
figured prominently in the April 22 pre-dawn raid that wrested
the six-year-old boy from his Miami relatives. As a federal agent
brandishes an assault rifle, the little boy was captured in a
photo holding onto Dalrymple, whose image is frozen in a snapshot
of open-mouthed fear.

Overnight, Dalrymple's image was splashed across television
screens, magazine covers and newspaper front pages. Then came the
awkward questions about his past. It turned out that Elián's real
savior wasn't Dalrymple at all; the hero of the tale was actually
his cousin Sam Ciancio, who dove into the ocean to save Elián.
Dalrymple, who had been commonly identified as a fisherman, in
fact had never fished prior to that November morning. He has also
faced questions about his marital past. Dalrymple may be
reluctant to discuss the topic for good reason. Newsweek has
learned that in 1984, he walked down the aisle with a 14-year-old
Broward County girl who was two years shy of the minimum marital
age under Florida law.

Dalyrmple initially told Newsweek that he had only taken out a
marriage license and claimed he called off the nuptials when he
discovered the bride's age. "She was five feet eight inches, 135
pounds and she looked 24 years old," he says. Now, Dalyrmple says
he took part in the wedding ceremony after being "threatened" by
the bride's mother, but insists that the marriage had no legal
standing because it was never formally registered with the
Florida government. The bride and her parents admit that she
altered her birth certificate to make her appear 16 years old and
supplied false information to authorities on the wedding license
application form. The bride's mother denies threatening Dalyrmple
and the family maintains that he was fully informed of her age.

The ill-fated marriage of Donato Anthony Dalrymple and Virginia
Andrea Hando had its origins in the neighborhood church where the
two worshipped. A devout Christian, Dalrymple had just turned 24
when he saw Ginny Hando singing in the choir of the Apostolic
Lighthouse Church of Pompano Beach, Fla. in the spring of 1984.
From the very outset, the girl's parents, Virginia and Donald
Hando, took a shine to the young man, whom his friends called
"Dee Dee." "He didn't drink, he didn't do drugs, he didn't smoke,
he was a good kid," recalls Ginny's mother. By Mrs. Hando's own
account, she always knew the sweethearts had arrived back home
because they "would sit in the driveway praying. We were very
impressed with his walk with God."

So impressed, in fact, that they gave Ginny their consent to
marry Dalyrmple and helped her conceal her age because she was
just 14. (Parental consent doesn't override Florida's minimum age
requirement of 16). Newsweek obtained a stamped marriage record
issued by the clerk of Broward County, dated November 10, 1984
and signed by a Pentecostal clergyman named John T. Baker
confirming that Dalrymple married Ginny Hando. The bride says
three hundred relatives and well-wishers attended the ceremony.
Afterwards, the couple left for a Caribbean honeymoon
cruise-accompanied by Dalrymple's parents-in-law.

The marriage lasted barely a month. Ginny Hando and her parents
say that Dalrymple mentally and physically abused her during the
cruise. Ginny Hando, now 30, is still angry when discussing
Dalrymple. "I was very young and he put me through a lot of
hell," she says. Dalrymple denies ever having abused Ginny Hando.

The newlyweds called it quits for good over the Christmas
holidays of 1984. The couple never sent in the marriage
certificate to Broward County and Dalrymple tore up the document.
Without such a filing, the marriage was never recognized by the
state. Today, the tattered remains of the certificate are in
Ginny Hando's possession. As far as Dalyrmple is concerned,
that's all that's left of the fiasco: "I was never married to
her."

A...that bastion of fair-minded reporting...LMAO!

Jane Orient, M.D., executive director of the Association of
American Physicians and Surgeons, told WorldNetDaily she believes
the doctors from Cuba are not licensed and may be using drugs to
condition Elian before he appears in court.

Hmmm...occidently...er incidently, I've never heard of this group...must
investigate!

Elian, 6, suffered a traumatic seizure when he was taken at
gunpoint in a frightening raid by government agents, according to
Orient. She said she does not trust the "glowing reports" from
unnamed government-appointed doctors that Elian has not suffered
any adverse effects from the raid.

Again and really...who is this pearl o' the orient? Credientials?

Does she believe Elian has been given drugs to control his
behavior?

"Sure," she said. "They may be using drugs, or maybe they're
just using manipulation, isolation, seclusion, and threats and
promises. I mean, how do you find out what's going on in there?"

...or they MAY be using hand-puppets...or maybe they're using candy...or
PERHAPS they're promising young Elian POKEMON cards...who knows? They COULD
be doing ANYTHING! But thanx for the speculation Dr. "Orient"!

Drugs were confiscated from the Cubans as they entered the U.S.
and again when they left, according to several press reports.
Orient said one drug involved was Meprobamate, which is also
known as Miltown.

Hey! Maybe Elian is smuggling MILTOWN into this country

"I don't think it's used very much in this country at all
anymore. It's certainly not supposed to be used on children,"

Actually with the popularity explosion of the BENZODIAZAPINE family of
tranqs, meprobamate ISN'T used much anymore...however it IS still used...and
(horror of horrors) it's widely regarded as one of the most effective ways to
foil the polygraph test!

Insulin was also confiscated by U.S. officials, which caused
Orient concern.

"Certainly that's a method of psychological torture, or even life
threatening to induce insulin shock in somebody," she told
WorldNetDaily in a phone interview.

Oh sure! Young Elian was S taken by the criminal element in Miami
that he requires Insulin Therapy to force him to love his only surviving
parent...and to prefer his dad to strangers...suuure!!!

Why is this "doctor" so blatently PANDERING to the Cuban/Patriot fringe?
That's the question!

Elian's personal doctor has also expressed great concern over
what has happened, and she has not been permitted to see Elian
since he was taken and placed in seclusion.

Hmmm...let's see...Elian is 6...he's been in America for 6 months...so are we
talking about his "personal doctor of 5 1/2 years? Or of 6 months? There IS a
difference...Joe Mendez MD of Miami would have SERIOUS credibility issues.

Both Usategui and her husband Alfred Manrara were present during
the government raid to take the boy by force.

WOW! Who exactly, besides me, WEREN'T there?

Oh enough already!
This article is a JOKE...and it's sentiment a pathetic excuse for journalism.

Weel, Bill, glad to hear that you are vocal for legalization. I favor the widespread
availability of drugs of every kind, as long as people are able to make informed
decisions about the effects such things have on the body and are not forced to partake
or bombarded with propaganda from the pro's or con's. I think that what one does to
one's own self, EVEN IF HARMFUL to one's self, including suicide and drilling a hole
in your head, as well as amputating limbs just 'cause you can't stand having them any
more, should not only be legal but should be the norm. Personal fulfillment is more
than just going to work for the man and being forced to make do with the poor quality
of "approved" highs. If a woman can abort a fetus (and I think she has the right to
do so, though I don't particularly like the idea of it) then certainly someone should
be allowed to take a possibly "dangerous" drug (which probably is not dangerous at
all. Anyways how many people die from illegal drugs every year as compared with
"legal" drugs (pharmaceuticals, alcohol, tobacco)? I'll bet they aren't even close!
