Mike,
Please list these "slave owning southern 
states."Could you possibly mean "FORMER" slave owning southern 
states? And how are they different from states not in the South where 
slaves were owned formerly, which was just about all of them, wasn't it? 
And also please explain how they have control over the government with 
such small populations. Congressional districts are still based on 
population, aren't they? My state only has around 5 million total despite being 
23rd in land area. If these states have "control of the government" I was 
not aware of this and am very glad to learn of it as there are some major 
changes I have in mind.

I only caught the first half of the show on crop circles but
really liked it!  The History Channel has one on UFO's I
believe is tonight.  Some of the crop circles were quite
elaborate.  I could se two guys with a rope and board making
the plain circles but the more elaborate designs would take
some time and measurements being taken.  Anybody have
explanations?  Favorite theories?

I saw some "ice rings" on a pond during our recent freeze
and asked a couple of farmers about possible causes and they
seemed to think an underground spring bubbling up warmer
water could cause this. Hhuumm--they were near perfect
circles but I suppose it is possible. Maybe I should ask
them about crop circles.  I would need photos to show them
as I doubt they are familiar with this phenomenon.

burning down in attempt I believe to destroy evidence and the fires in
the west - not to hard to figure this one.

And then, Linda Tripp has plastic surgery, all ready to go on the TV
circuit - and boom - Clinton is forgotten and she goes back into retreat
- what was that woman paid to do on the joband what happened to
Vince Foster for she was the last to see him alive?   Atares =

Watch the news media now - except for Fox, all seemed to want Gore in -

 The national interest requires that certain information
 be maintained in confidence through a system of classification in order
to protect our citizens, our democratic institutions, and our
participation within the community of nations.  The unauthorized
disclosure of information classified in the national interest can cause
irreparable damage to the national security and loss of human life.
  Security policies designed to protect classified
 information must ensure consistent, cost effective, and
 efficient protection of our Nation's classified information, while
providing fair and equitable treatment to those Americans upon whom we
rely to guard our national security.
   This order establishes a uniform Federal personnel security program
for employees who will be considered for initial or continued access to
classified information.
   Now, Therefore, by the authority vested in me as President by the
Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, it is hereby
ordered as follows:
   Part 1  Definitions, Access To Classified Information, Financial
Disclosure, And Other Items

John Ashcroft's nose is growing faster than Pinocchio's during his Senate
confirmation hearings. As attorney general, will he be as evasive with the
truth?

Jan. 30, 2001 | Of all the perfectly sound reasons to oppose John Ashcroft's
nomination -- and perhaps to mount a filibuster against him, now that his
confirmation appears likely -- the most compelling is that he didn't tell the
truth to the United States Senate.
In deference to the presidential prerogative, many senators may feel they
should approve Ashcroft despite his ideological extremism; others may think
they owe a former colleague the benefit of the doubt when he promises to
enforce the law impartially. But how are they to believe that pledge, or
expect the majority of skeptical Americans to trust Ashcroft, after he
prevaricated so blatantly during his own testimony under oath?
Two years ago, the Senate conducted an impeachment trial against a president
who had lied about personal matters in a private lawsuit. Before President
Clinton was finally acquitted because the majority felt his offenses were not
impeachable, dozens of Republicans declared that such lying was unacceptable
in the nation's chief magistrate. Why then is similar conduct now deemed
acceptable in a candidate for the nation's highest law enforcement position?
And why would the Senate vouchsafe the responsibilities of that office to a
man who has already mocked its trust?
The senators who vote to confirm his nomination this week will laud Ashcroft
as a public servant of unblemished integrity, and such praise may be uttered
by them in full sincerity. But to any senator who fulfills his or her own
obligation to examine the hearing record completely and dispassionately,
Ashcroft's dishonesty will be too obvious to be ignored.
Almost nobody believes his evasive answers about the ambassadorial nomination
of James Hormel, for instance. Rather than admit forthrightly that he had
blocked Hormel as ambassador to Luxembourg because the Clinton nominee would
have been the nation's first openly gay envoy, Ashcroft chose to make vague
claims about Hormel's "entire record," adding ominously that Hormel had
"recruited" him to the University of Chicago. Few falsehoods more obvious
than that one have ever been told under oath in a Senate hearing. Ashcroft
also testified untruthfully about the substance of the St. Louis
desegregation case. Instead of admitting that he opposed integration, which
he clearly did, the former Missouri attorney general insisted that he was
merely defending his state government from an overreaching federal judge.
That may be a matter of opinion, but it left the clear impression back then
of a politician stirring racial conflict for personal advancement.
But when Ashcroft claimed repeatedly in the hearings that "the state had not
been found really guilty of anything" in the St. Louis court case, he knew
that answer was wholly false. Having appealed the matter all the way to the
Supreme Court and lost, he can't have forgotten that the state of Missouri
was held responsible by the courts for its long history of maintaining
segregrated schools in St. Louis and its suburbs.
Ashcroft lied confidently during the hearings about matters large and small,
presumably relying on the gullibility of his former colleagues. Among the
more disturbing instances was his attempted explanation of the now-notorious
interview he gave in 1998 to the Southern Partisan, an organ of the
neo-Confederate movement.
On Jan. 17, Sen. Joseph Biden, D-Del., engaged Ashcroft in a long, rambling
discourse about the Southern Partisan's racial and ethnic bias and its dogged
defense of slavery and "states' rights." Mostly Biden seemed to be talking to
hear the sound of his own voice, as he often does in hearings, but Ashcroft
eventually had a chance to respond to Biden's scolding.
"I don't know if I've ever read the magazine or seen it," he said, claiming
that he had merely answered a few questions in a telephone interview. "And I
regret that speaking to them is being used to imply that I agree with their
views." Moments later he added, "I probably should do more due diligence on
[Southern Partisan]. I know they've been accused of being racist."
Unfortunately, Biden was ill-prepared to press Ashcroft any further.
Otherwise he might have asked how Ashcroft could claim he didn't know about
the Southern Partisan's content when he had told the editor who interviewed
him that "your magazine ... helps set the record straight. You've got a
heritage of doing that, of defending Southern patriots like Lee, Jackson and
Davis." Certainly in that text, whose accuracy Ashcroft has never denied, he
sounds like a fan who is quite familiar with the magazine's content.
Maybe he was just giving a few strokes to a desirable white supremacist
voting bloc. Yet even if Ashcroft was uninformed about the

Tracing the pro-Hitler roots which formed the branches of the fortunes of the

Researcher Anton Chaitkin was the son of a Jewish attorney, Joseph Chaitkin, 
whose clients invested in bonds issued by the Hamburg-Amerika Line, which had 
taken over the North German Lloyd steamship line. After Hitler came to power, 
Hamburg-Amerika stopped payment to the bondholders based on an order issued 
by Hitler, but actually arranged by John Foster Dulles and his friend Hjalmar 
Schacht. Schacht was born in Germany but had grown up in the U.S. and been 
educated alongside America's elite sons, but who returned to Germany to be 
Hitler's finance minister.

Joseph Chaitkin filed suit in New York in 1934 on behalf of his clients and 
organized a boycott against trading with the new German government. His 
efforts were stifled by a number of investment bankers operating in the 
United States, ostensibly American patriots, but later accused of being 
traders with the enemy. The research conducted by Anton Chaitkin into the 
cover-up that ensued has been thoroughly documented in the book he wrote with

I have never been one who believes anything I read without investigation. 
After reading the book, I asked myself: "What is the best way to actually 
remove the veil that preserves the secrecy around the investments managed by

the rise to power of both Dulles brothers and their creation of the Central

Harriman  Co. from a university computer. Recently I have been taking each 
name and running it through the recorded filings which are accessible through 
the SEC Edgar sites on the internet.

Let's take one of those names and explore what we find. It's an historical 
name passed down through the generations--Elbridge T. Gerry--a family name 
which was around even before E.H. Harriman became a household word. The first 
Elbridge T. Gerry (a merchant shipper) was a signer of the Declaration of 
Independence and took a seat at the Continental Congress in 1776, served 
until 1785, and then retired to Cambridge, Mass. He was elected governor of 
Massachusetts in 1810 and, in 1813, was elected as James Madison's 
vice-president, though he died a year later. He had three sons and four

His grandson "Commodore" Elbridge Thomas Gerry, 1837-1927, was a reformer. A 
position as legal advisor to the American Society for the Prevention of 
Cruelty to Animals led to his founding (1875), with the help of Henry Bergh,

called the Gerry Society). He devoted most of his life to this cause, which 
became national in scope. He and his wife, Louisa M. Gerry had two sons named 
after wealthy New Yorkers, Peter Goelet and Robert Livingston, and two

Robert Livingston Gerry married Cornelia Harriman (daughter of railroad

born in 1908, held general partnerships in the banking firms Brown Brothers 
Harriman  Company, and Gerry Brothers  Company, and was a well-known 
philanthropist, notable polo player, avid participant in harness racing, and 
breeder of champion horse racers. In 1932 he married Marjorie Kane, daughter 
of John P. Kane. They had two sons, Elbridge T. Jr. and Peter G. II, and a

Curiously, the number of wealthy, slave-owning  plantation owners
in the Old South was relatively few--as with any "aristocracy.".
Many--if not most--of those who are now running around waving the
Confederate flag and pining for those Dear Old Days are not the
heirs of that wealthy few. They are folks who descend from
merchants and shopkeepers and on down the ladder to poor white
farmers and sharecroppers too poor to own slaves, struggling to
hold on to a mule and a piece of land.

What those  great-great-grandsons of poor whites and
sharecroppers really want is someone below them on the social
ladder so they don't have to feel that they're the bottom of the
barrel. That's where the Negro/African-American comes in. That's
where he has a functiona dog to kick, as it were.

Humans seem to love hierarchy (is it hardwired into the system?)
Like a flock of chickens, all those great-great-grandchildren of poor
southern white folks just don't want to see themselves at the low
end of the pecking order. And now, at the very highest reaches of
our government, we have a pack of men who not only understand
but share  their pain.

A Scottish tourist who died mysteriously in Israel may have been a member of
the secret organization known as the Knights Templar Israeli journalist Barry 
Chamish says that he has evidence that the heart was removed after his death, 
as part of an ancient ritual. Israeli officials claim that the removal took 
place during a routine autopsy, but could offer no explanation of why it was 
not returned to the family with the other remains. A heart that was later 
given to them by Israeli health officials could not be verified as being the 
heart of Alisdair Rosslyn Sinclair.

Sinclair made an unexplained five-day visit to Israel in April, 1998. He was 
arrested as he tried to leave the country and died in police custody. 

At the time of his death, he was a musician living in Amsterdam. Now,
startling new evidence has been uncovered which reveals that the Scottish
guitar maker was a direct descendant of a high-ranking family which helped
found the Order of the Knights Templar, which is part of an international
battle for the control of the holy sites in Jerusalem.

Chamish's investigaton into Sinclair's death has led him to conclude that the 
musician was the victim of his  inherited connection with the Templars.
 "In my opinion," Chamish says, "he was murdered and his killing was linked 
to a
greater conspiracy."

Last week the Israeli Government launched a massive investigation into Abu
Kabir morgue, after allegations that body parts from corpses were illegally
removed and sold on the black market for organ transplants. "But it was
pointless removing Alisdair's heart for medical reasons," claims Chamish.
"For a start, a heart has to be kept alive via a life support system if it
is to be transplanted. Even more damning is the fact that in Israel we do
not carry out heart transplants."

It is believed that Alisdair Sinclair was murdered and his heart removed
because of his bloodline, since he was one of the leading members of the
Knights Templar hierarchy.

"The Knights Templar believe they are the rightful heirs to the Christian
holy sites in Jerusalem and are currently involved in a secret battle to
gain control of them," says Chamish. "Alisdair may have been killed because
he got caught up in this clandestine war. The removal of his heart is part
of the Knights Templar tradition. When Robert the Bruce died he asked that
his heart be cut out and taken from Scotland to be buried in Jerusalem. In
Israel, legend has it that his dying wishes were fulfilled."

Both Alisdair's brother and the Order of the Knights Templar have backed up
some of Chamish's conclusions. James Sinclair, Alisdair's younger brother,
said, "Alisdair knew all about our Knights Templar background. He was proud
of the fact he was named after Rosslyn Chapel, which was built by the
Knights Templar in Scotland. He and I were told about our heritage and
bloodline by our father when we were young boys. And we often visited
Rosslyn Chapel."

Barry Chamish is convinced Alisdair became caught up in a religious feud in
Jerusalem.

Currently, no fewer than six organizations or nations believe they have
first claim to the holy sites in the old part of the Israeli capital. As
well as Israel and the Palestinians, others who believe they are entitled to
the land include the Vatican, the Greek Orthodox Church and the Russian
Orthodox Church.

A spokesman for the modern Knights Templar, John Ritchie, lives two miles
from the village of Temple, the site of the original Templar headquarters in
Scotland. Ritchie, a journalist who works for Reuters, said, "The modern
order has 100 members...We are currently involved in an attempt to remove
control of the holy sites of Jerusalem from the Israeli Government. We
believe they should be administered by the United Nations and are working
with the UN and NATO to achieve that goal."

Chamish revealed that Alisdair Rosslyn Sinclair is a descendant of one of
the original Knights Templar, an order set up by a French relative of the
St. Clair family of Rosslyn.The order, which flourished in the 13th century,
spread across Europe and became wealthier than many nations.

In 1307 the King of France arrested thousands of Templars in an attempt to
destroy the Order and claim its assets. A small number escaped to Scotland
where they were protected by the St. Clair (later Sinclair) family and
continued to flourish. They eventually played a major role in Robert the
Bruce's military triumphs.

"I believe Alisdair was murdered," says Chamish. "He came to Israel because
of his Knights Templar background and became caught up in the current
conflict over Jerusalem.

"The official explanations about his death cannot be believed. He was
stopped trying to leave the country allegedly because he had 9000
Deutschmarks (about $5,000) in a secret compartment of a suitcase. There is

Fraud-As-Usual at the Redstone Arsenal 

      Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama -- where illegal foreign arms 
merchants enjoy sumptuous lobster and prime rib lunches at US taxpayers' 
expense.

      The Huntsville, Alabama complex is one of the four United States 
National Arsenals. It's also the headquarters of the United States Central 
Missile Production Command, where most of the United States missile systems 
are produced and tested.

      During the last year, there have been reports in the media about two 
congressional investigations, one by the US Senate Defense Oversight 
Committee and the other by its companion committee in the House, regarding 
illegal sales of extremely sophisticated US military technology and weapons 
systems to embargoed foreign countries.

      When a country is embargoed by the US Defense Department, US defense 
contractors can not sell them weapons because these countries constitute a 
potential threat to the United States, or they constitute a potential threat 
to destabilizing US influence within a certain region of the world.

      The principal weapons, illegally sold through the Redstone Arsenal, 
have been components of highly advanced missile technology. Through a 
circuitous shipment route, then, the end user or recipient has been the 
Peoples' Republic of China.

      These shipments have been disguised under the Freedom Space Station 
Program, as well as through the cooperation between the thirty-six nations 
which are contributing to this program.

      In fact, Congress passed a specific law, a little-known waiver for the 
Freedom Space Station Program, wherein the United States could ship certain 
embargoed technology (dual use) to other countries which were participating 
in the building of the space station.

      It is this loophole that is being used to ship weapons components which 
have nothing to do with the program.

      China is a partner in this deal. Over the past year (2000), this fraud 
has expanded into selling many other types of restricted high technology US 
weapons systems. This is often accomplished through the weekly meetings at 
the Redstone Arsenal by certain individuals known as "The Group."

      This Group consists mostly of foreign arms dealers, principally German, 
Russian, and Chinese brokers. These brokers are almost exclusively foreign 
military officers or retired foreign military officers. Often they even show 
up in uniform.

      Their US counterparts are mostly retired US Air Force senior officers, 
who have formed arms companies themselves, or they act as paid agents or 
distributors for US defense contractors.

      That in itself is not against the law, as long as they do not sell this 
technology to any embargoed country. There is, however, already an artifice 
in place to break that embargo.

      The foreign arms merchants oftentimes either own their arms companies 
or they work for foreign defense contractors. Most of the Germans there, for 
example, come under the auspices of the Siemens Group.

      In other words, the Siemens Group is being used as a front to broker 
weapons with the Russians to the Chinese.

      How they're doing it, by the way, is by disguising these transactions. 
They have weekly auctions. However, what the auction sheet lists as the items 
being sold are in fact not what the items are.

      Even my inside source, the Friendly Colonel, tried bidding on a lot. It 
was described as "Miscellaneous Department of Defense Used Office Furniture 
and Equipment." That lot was number 103 on the August 19, 2000 auction. It 
sold for $354,000.

      The man sitting at the table next to him was the infamous Chinese arms 
dealer, Lan "Lanny" Chin. It should also be mentioned that he is a colonel in 
the Chinese Ministry of State Security.

      The lot in question, actually contained a number of landmines. These 
landmines happen to be the most sophisticated landmines in US military 
inventory.

      These landmines are all made of non-metallic components. They have 
automatic proximity alarms and differential frequency alarms. They also 
automatically send out their own radar signal. These are the most 
sophisticated land mines produced in the world today. They're so 
state-of-the-art that the United States itself hasn't even deployed the 
system yet.

      And what happened then? This lot of landmines was then shipped from the 
military airfield in Huntsville, Alabama to the government of Mexico. They 
were listed as "Crates of Eggs."

      The Mexican Government, actually the Mexican Army, acted as a 
trans-shipper. From Mexico, they were shipped to Ecuador. From Ecuador, they 
were shipped to Peru. From Peru, they were shipped to Pakistan. And from 
Pakistan, they were shipped to China. That was the route taken by these 
particular "Crates of Eggs.

      What we got then was $354,000 of the Chinese People's Army

This is not only faulty logic, but it flies in the face of the empirical
data. More guns, at most, equal more death by gunfire. More guns do not
equal more deaths period. Whered you learn math, anyway? Go back there
and complain. Your math teacher was grossly misfeasant. Your equation is
incomplete. You failed to factor in the deaths prevented by guns. Every
year, at the barest minimum, Americans use guns to prevent crimes two
million times. And thats just the ones that were reported. It is not at
all unsafe to assume that the majority go unreported. The majority of
all human activities go unreported. I, myself, have used a gun to
prevent a crime. I sure didnt report it.

Guns prevent crimes. Often that crime is murder. Then theres rape and
robbery, but lets keep this simple and factor only for deaths.  To
accurately determine the death to gun ratio you have to subtract form
the total number of deaths the murders that were prevented by guns in
the hands of the intended victims of murders that didnt happen.

Calculating the gun to death  ratio is not the most revealing study,
anyway. What you really want to be calculating is the ratio between the
number of times a gun is used to prevent a death and the number times a
gun is used to cause a death. Keep in mind that a certain number will
cancel each other out because one way to prevent a death is to cause
one. 

In the vast majority of cases where a gun is used to prevent a crime,
however, it is not fired. It is, at most brandished. In my case, I
didnt even brandish it. I just let them know it was there. I popped the
lid of the car trunk and, while standing behind it, looked the nearest
one in eye and said. Do you WANT trouble? He didnt, and neither did
his friends. They backed off at once, and I dont blame them one bit. It
was the smartest move they could have possibly made. 

I am one hundred percent convinced that having what I had in the trunk
that day prevented at least three, and maybe five murders. And I didnt
even have to show it off. For all they knew for certain, all I had in
there was a stack of cream pies. But if I hadnt had what I did have  in
there, I wouldnt have been able to pull it off. My fear would have
shown and theyd have been on us in a hot second.

Never bluff. NEVER, not even once. Especially dont try to bluff a bunch
of guys with lumpy pockets when one of them is coming straight at you
across a parking lot with his hand in his pocket and race slurs coming
out of his mouth aimed at the  guy next to you. Dont bluff guys like
this. Its way too risky. If shooting back is not at least one of your
options, run. Run as fast as you can and hope they dont shoot you the
back. If they shoot you anyway, as youre lying there dying, youre
going to have some last thoughts. One of them, I guarantee, will be, I
should have listened to nessie about this. Is that REALLY what you want
to have for a last thought? Think about it.

AN elite team of US Navy code-breakers has been established at the joint 
Australia-US intelligence base at Pine Gap as part of a push to boost 
surveillance of foreign navies in Asia.

The group – known as the US Navy Detachment Combined Support Group, Alice 
Springs, Australia – was formally set up in early 1998, according to US naval 
documents obtained by The Australian.

Intelligence experts believe the group was probably set up to help monitor 
developments in China's navy, which is undergoing a modernisation program 
amid continuing tensions with neighbouring Taiwan.

China is one of several Asian navies, including India's, that are looking to 
acquire extra firepower to assert their strategic influence in the region – a 
development being carefully monitored by Western allies.

Australia would have access to the information obtained by the US group at 
Pine Gap under longstanding intelligence-sharing arrangements between the two 
countries.

In 1997 the federal Government foreshadowed increases in both US and 
Australian civilian and military personnel at Pine Gap but did not provide 
details. 

But a letter from the commander of the US Naval Security Group Command to the 
US Chief of Naval Operations in January 1998 provides a rare insight into the 
build-up at the base. 

"The NSGC Command has entered into a host nation partnership at the Joint 
Defense Facility, Pine Gap, Australia that requires assignment of a cadre of 
navy cryptologic officers and technicians," it says.

"This action is required to support NSGC participation in a joint operational 
venture at the Joint Defense Facility, Pine Gap, Australia.

"The letter proposes that the detachment comprise about 43 US naval officers 
and enlisted personnel, but does not make it clear if any of these would 
already have been serving at Pine Gap when the unit was set up.

A spokesman for Defence Minister John Moore declined to comment specifically 
on the letter but said: "The Government in 1997 foreshadowed staff increases 
as Pine Gap's role continues to evolve to meet the demands of the post-Cold 
War environment."

A spokesman for the US embassy in Canberra also declined to comment but 
pointed to the Australian Government's 1997 announcement about planned 
staffing increases at Pine Gap.

An intelligence expert from Canberra's Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, 
Des Ball, said the US naval unit would probably be responsible for monitoring 
specific developments in command and control of a major regional navy, most 
likely China's.

"They are obviously monitoring some naval communications in the region that 
are of very high value to them," Professor Ball said.

The tasks carried out by the US naval group might also include monitoring 
telemetry associated with development of long-range anti-ship missiles in the 
region, he said.

China is seeking to develop a blue-water navy to maximise its strategic clout 
in the South China Sea, the Taiwan Straits and the Sea of Japan.

US air force and army personnel have also been stationed at Pine Gap for some 
years, although their numbers are unknown.

When the joint US-Australian intelligence facility at Pine Gap was built in 
1967, it used satellites to detect and monitor missile launches in the former 
Soviet Union. Since then it has expanded into a huge high-tech ground station 
that monitors a vast range of military targets in South and East Asia.

Since 1980, Australia has reportedly had full access to all intelligence 
gathered at Pine Gap.

Professor Ball said the establishment of the NSGC detachment at Pine Gap 
marked the first time that a US intelligence agency other than the CIA had 
had a permanent presence there.

The NSGC reports to the National Security Agency rather than the CIA, which 
runs Pine Gap. The NSGC's letter appears to reflect some sensitivity about 
this point, advising that "due to operational security concerns at the Joint 
Defence Facility, Pine Gap, the proposed title of the detachment does not 
indicate a relationship to the Naval Security Group".

The Pine Gap base could become the subject of controversy later this year if 
the new Bush administration in Washington asks Australia to help establish 
its proposed national missile defence system.

Such a system would almost certainly use the facilities at Pine Gap. The 
Howard Government has indicated its support for the planned system but the 
ALP has expressed serious reservations.

or beaten at worst when i am out and about. in the US the reality is that
you have to defend yourself with a gun because the assailants are armed, i
understand and sympathise completely with that- and would not want to take

but it is a bad situation that can only escalate. it is all you know and it
is so sad that the stakes are that high in your country. it is normal to
you- but strange to a western european.
i think it may be immoral of your government to limit your options when the

The American people, along with the rest of the world’s population, have 
been under attack by insidious lethal enemies. Most people cannot perceive 
or conceive that shadow governors are engaged in hideous biological and 
chemical experiments on unwitting populations. Minority and ethnic groups 
especially at risk for toxic exposures, many being done in the name of 
“public health.” 
The recent widescale spraying of malathion and Anvil, two known chemical 
carcinogens and immune system toxins, to allegedly prevent West Nile Virus 
attacks within several northeastern American states, is just one example of 
such “public health policy” based on no rational science. Most people are 
incapable of realising the scope and depth of such crimes against humanity. 
Perceiving, rather, their impotence in altering the course of history, and 
fearing the fight of a crusade, people rationalise their inefficacy or 
indifference in human terms – “Don’t tell me. That’s just the way it is. 
I can’t do anything about it anyway, so I’d rather not know.”

During the past two decades, at least six internationally known authorities 
advanced theories that the AIDS virus (HIV-1) was developed by biological 
weapons researchers, and either accidentally or intentionally transmitted 
it with the help of the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) and the 
United Nations World Health Organisation (WHO). A 1969 US military 
appropriations document obtained through the Freedom of Information Act 
called for $10 million for the development of AIDS-like viruses by 1975. In 
fact the National Academy of Sciences / National Research Council had 
informed the Department of Defense (DOD) that:



[I]t would probably be possible to make a new infective microorganism 
which could differ in certain important aspects from any known 
disease-causing organisms. Most important of these is that it might be 
refractory to the immunological and therapeutic processes upon which we 
depend to maintain our relative freedom from infectious disease.




During the 1960s and early 1970s, these agencies, with help from the World 
Health Organisation (WHO), the (US) National Cancer Institute (NCI), and 
the Rockefeller and Alfred P. Sloan Foundations played leading roles in the 
development of cancer viruses for vaccine research and germ warfare. By 
1969, the WHO had provided “prototype virus strains” for more than 592 
virus laboratories in more than 35 different countries. That year, four of 
the most active centres, including the NCI and US Centers for Disease 
Control and Prevention (CDC), distributed 2,514 strains of viruses, 1888 
ampoules of experimental vaccines, and about 100 samples of cell cultures 
throughout the WHO’s viral network. 70,000 virus isolations were reported 
by 1970, and many, cultured for further study, were breaking out of the 
laboratories that tested them.

In March of 1970, WHO consultants even reported the likelihood of massive 
cancer epidemics from such virus outbreaks. Such “biological agents,” they 
noted, “may be used... to achieve the simultaneous infection of key groups 
of people, and the military consequences might well be of major 
importance” However, they warned of the “calculated risk that a 
virulent mutant might appear and spread rapidly to produce an 
uncontrollable epidemic on a large scale”

These consultants also predicted that as a consequence of such biological 
attacks, “mass illnesses, deaths, and epidemics” would require the WHO and 
allied agencies to furnish supplies and personnel to deal with the 
resulting medical emergencies.

The first viruses and retroviruses used for cancer and biological weapons 
research passed through the NCI. Among the premier labs specifically 
researching, developing, and testing immune system destroying viruses was 
the Cell Tumor Biology Laboratory at the NCI. This was headed by Dr. Robert 
Gallo – the notorious alleged co-discoverer of the AIDS virus. To date it 
remains uncertain when Gallo discovered HIV. It was reported Gallo’s 
discovery followed the French Pasteur Institute’s Luc Montagnier’s 
discovery of LAV, an identical virus, in 1984, but new evidence suggests he 
may have genetically engineered the virus as early as 1970 along with 
biological weapons contractors at Litton Bionetics – a subsidiary of the 
mega-military weapons producer Litton Industries, Inc.


Dr. Gallo’s behaviour is, in fact, highly suspicious. As chronicled by 
bestselling deceased author Randy Shilts in And the Band Played On, and 
more recently by Eleanor Burkitt in The Gravest Show on Earth, Gallo’s 
collaborative efforts in search of the AIDS virus were deceitful and 
repugnant. The authors’ charged Gallo’s ego was largely responsible for 
delaying international progress in search of the AIDS virus.

So my family always had an interest in diamonds and gems, in particular
the Hope Diamond - the cursed diamond of all time.

Now as I pointed out to snoOwl, on Larry King's show, Elizabeth Taylor
wore this huge diamond.

During this show Larry King suddenly l grabbed her hand and said "where
did you get this ting" and he pulled and tugged at her hand  and would
not let go - Ms. Elizabeth Rosmond Taylor,  aka 7 or so more names -
tried to pull her hand away he he hung on to her hand in a not too
gentle manner.


She was drunk or spaced out on drugs; suddenlty she said "Richard bought
it for me"..and he had bought it from KRUPP.he diamond looked as
cheap as she did no doubt because so much gauze and goop was put on the
lenses to knock off layers of wrinkles.a usual procedure which takes
considerable time.

So Richard bought it from Krupp.but then she said in a loud voice
like what revenge a little jewish girl like her had that
diamondand King said hey, Liz you are a convert jew aren't you?

He was as disgusted with her as I hope those who watched her performance
must have been.

The diamond ring had belonged to Krupp and now she calls it the Taylor

The governor's signing of Michigan's concealed weapons reform bill, HB
4530, on Jan. 2, 2001 has spawned a most incredible collection of media
lies, fantasies, and distortions regarding firearms and crime. In order
to provide thinking and rational people with facts to be used as
rebuttal, this piece lists some of the more flagrant fantasies, followed
by the relevant facts. Please feel free to use any or all of these data
without attribution as to source. It is more important to present these
facts to people who are able to comprehend them.


Fantasy: Michigan's new concealed weapons licensing law liberalizes the
carrying of concealed pistols.

Fact: Instead of liberalizing existing law, the new law provides much
tighter requirements on applicants than does the current law. The new
law "de-elitizes" current law and provides very strong restrictions on
recipients of concealed weapons licenses, and is the most stringent law
of any of the 32 "shall-issue" states.
 Current (pre-2001) law contains virtually no restrictions on who can
receive a permit to carry a concealed weapon. Detailed studies of
licensees in Kent County and Washtenaw County, as well as numerous
reported experiences of applicants throughout the state, have shown that
the most important criterion for receiving a license is to have friends
on the concealed weapon licensing board. Permits are issued
preferentially to ex-police, judges, politicians, rock stars, and the
very wealthy, and few are granted to competent law-abiding citizens.
 The new law mandates state-wide uniformity in issuing concealed weapons
licenses, and requires the following, where in each instance the old law
required nothing:
· Anyone who has been convicted of a misdemeanor in the past 3 years is
ineligible.
· Anyone under the age of 21 is ineligible.
· Anyone with a diagnosed mental health illness is ineligible.
· Every applicant must complete an 8-hour training course.
· Licensees cannot carry in any of the following locations: schools and
school property, public and private; day care centers, public and
private; college dormitories and classrooms; bars and restaurants that
serve alcohol; property of churches, synagogues, and mosques; sports
arenas and stadiums; casinos; hospitals; auditoriums seating more than
2500.
· Licensees with blood alcohol greater than 0.02 percent are forbidden
to carry.
Current law allows some 3.5 million non-Michigan concealed weapon
licensees and some 25,000 Michigan licensees to carry in *all* of the
above locations. If the new law is repealed by initiative, this
situation will continue.


Fantasy: There will be "blood in the streets" from crimes committed by
concealed weapons licensees if shall-issue becomes law. (Senator Alma
Wheeler Smith, 18th District [Washtenaw County], personal
correspondence.)

Fact: It hasn't happened, anywhere. Concealed weapons licensees are
incredibly law-abiding citizens.

It hasn't happened in Florida, which was the first state with
shall-issue laws:
Since adopting CCW (1987), Florida's homicide rate has fallen 21%
while the U.S. rate has risen 12%. From start-up 10/1/87 - 2/28/94
(over 6 years) Florida issued 204,108 permits; only 17 (0.008%) were
revoked because permittees later committed crimes (not necessarily
violent) in which guns were present (not necessarily used).

It hasn't happened in Kentucky:
"None of our concerns have been borne out," said Hazard police Chief Rod

Maggard, president of the Kentucky Chiefs of Police Association, which
opposed the concealed-carry bill for fear it would invite citizens to
take
the law into their own hands. A [Louisville, KY] Courier-Journal
comparison of state police figures on the crime rate of permit holders
with the crime rate of the state population at large shows that murder
charges were placed against permit holders at a rate of 3.8 per 100,000
compared with 6.1 per 100,000 for the population at large during the
three most recent years available.

It hasn't happened in Texas:

the third largest city in America there has not been a single charge

Arts group to replay massacre in park

THE Institute of Contemporary Arts is to stage a re-enactment in a London park this 
summer of the 1978 Jonestown massacre in which more than 900 followers of the Rev Jim 
Jones committed suicide.
Vivienne Gaskin, the ICA's director of live arts, said the aim was "to counter the 
popular misconception that Jones was simply demonic, evil and without humanity".

She said: "He's remembered mainly for the mass suicide in Guyana, but we really want 
to look at what happened before."

The plan has infuriated survivors as well as cult experts and local residents. "I 
think on principle it is distasteful and disturbing to do something that glamorises or 
sanitises the image of someone who caused the deaths of so many," said Ayman Akshar, 
the director of Triumph Over London Cults.

"People do get attracted to join cults after seeing such images in films or public 
displays. They feel, 'Let's give it a try.' It is a sense of adventure and danger."

On May 26, Graeme Edler, who has appeared in The Bill and Brookside, will play Jones 
at the ICA and read some of his political and religious sermons from the mid-1970s, 
when thousands of followers flocked to his People's Temple in San Francisco. It will 
include one of the sham "miracle healings" he often performed.

At the end of July, however, the ICA is taking its art outside. In a re-enactment of 
the final days in Guyana, several hundred people will play the followers who committed 
suicide after drinking Kool-Aid laced with potassium cyanide. The ICA is negotiating 
to use Coin Street, on the South Bank, or Meanwhile Gardens, in Westbourne Grove.

"Why on earth are they doing it?" asked Tom Bower, 52, who lives near Meanwhile 
Gardens.

One of the Jonestown survivors, Deborah Layton, who followed Jones to Guyana in her 
twenties, wrote an account of her experiences, Seductive Poison, which was published 
last year. Layton left Guyana six months before the November 1978 mass suicide, which, 
in a sworn affidavit in America, she correctly predicted.

"I don't think that Jim Jones was evil at the beginning but he clearly became utterly 
psychotic when they went to Guyana," she said.

The ICA's re-enactment will largely omit the fact that Jones was a womaniser who 
forced some of his female followers into sex.

"I accept absolutely that Jones abused women," said Gaskin. "But this is not really 
what our re-enactment is about."

The ICA, which has a history of provoking controversy with plays about the Moors 
murders and art installations including soiled nappies, as well as a cosmetics display 
featuring Sophie Dahl, is seeking a £7,000 grant from the London Arts Board for the 
re-enactment. Almost a third of the ICA's £3m budget comes from public funds.

The insititute, based in the Mall near Admiralty Arch, initially sought funds from 
Benetton, the clothes firm known for its confrontational adverts, but was turned down.

Trevor Phillips, former chairman of the London Arts Board and now chairman of the 
London assembly, was born and raised in Guyana. "The ICA often comes up with weird, 
whacky, what seem bizarre and bonkers ideas," he said. "Who knows about this one? But 
sometimes some of these bizarre and bonkers things turn out to be good and interesting 
performance art."

Charles Krause, a journalist then with the Washington Post who was first on the scene 
after the mass suicide, said: "I would support their right to artistic expression, but 
I would want to ask some tough questions about their purpose in doing it."

Rod Dickinson, the artist who is creating the Jonestown events for the ICA, argues 
that his re-enactments "explore the paradoxes of Jones: he was not deranged but was 
clearly very manipulative".

He has recruited about 200 people to play the followers of Jones by advertising on the 
internet and in Fortean Times. "I see our re-creation of the Guyana death scene as 
being like the CND die-ins in the early 1980s," he said, when anti-nuclear protesters 
sometimes staged "fake" deaths by lying down in the streets.

Dickinson admitted there was no particular reason for re-enacting Jonestown now except 
that "it was such an iconic event", which had been followed by similar mass deaths at 
Waco, Texas, and recently in Uganda.

Maybe Marc Rich's lawyers had a point.

The indictment against Mr.  Rich that was invalidated by Bill
Clinton's pardon was based in part on aggressive prosecution
tactics later reined in by the Supreme Court and the Justice
Department, legal experts say. While that argument wouldn't have
come close to completely negating the massive tax-evasion case
against Mr.  Rich and co-defendant Pincus Green, it was heavily
emphasized in the effort that persuaded Mr. Clinton to pardon the
pair of fugitives, who now live in Switzerland.

"I don't sit here to tell you that I know about Mr.  Rich's
character," says Mr. Rich's lawyer Jack Quinn, the former White
House counsel who persuaded Mr. Clinton to issue the pardon.  "I
do sit here to tell you that the case that was brought against
him was wrong."

Political repercussions in the case are continuing. President
Bush criticized his predecessor's last-minute pardon but said he
wouldn't try to revoke it, a move that some administration
lawyers had researched.  "I was troubled by the decision the
president made.  I would not have made the decision," Mr.  Bush
said.  "But, nevertheless, he was the president; he had the right
to do so, to make that decision, and he did.  And I'm going to
protect that privilege not only for me, but for future presidents
as well."

The nub of the charges against Messrs.  Rich and Green was an
alleged scheme to circumvent profit and price controls on oil and
to evade taxes on resulting illicit profits.  In bringing the
indictment, though, prosecutors employed a then-novel and
aggressive use of the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt
Organization Act of 1970.

The law, originally aimed at organized-crime figures, lets
prosecutors lump a series of allegedly criminal acts into a
pattern of conduct. It's an attractive option for prosecutors
because the law includes stiffer penalties and authorizes the
government to freeze an allegedly corrupt company's assets prior
to trial, with an eye toward seizing them later, thereby
pressuring defendants into plea talks.  In the case of two Rich
companies, the tactic worked; they pleaded guilty in 1984 to
false statements and tax evasion in a $200 million settlement, a
move their lawyers now say was necessitated by corporate
survival, not by a sincere belief in their own guilt.

At the time of the indictment in 1983, RICO had rarely if ever
been used in a major white-collar crime case.  But the Justice
Department's guidelines since 1989 have restricted the use of
RICO in tax cases.  "Tax offenses are not predicates for RICO
offenses," says the Department's United States Attorneys' Manual.
The indictment also uses mail-fraud charges to bolster the tax
case, which could run afoul of another guideline that discourages
mail-fraud charges when the mailing is "used to promote or
facilitate a scheme which is essentially only a tax-fraud
scheme."

Moreover, the Rich indictment includes several mail-fraud charges
based on allegedly fraudulent reports to the Energy Department.
But in 1987, the Supreme Court ruled that mail-fraud laws don't
cover violations of "the intangible right of the citizenry to
good government." Congress later overturned the ruling, but Mr.
Rich's alleged offenses occurred earlier, so arguably they were
governed by the high-court ruling.  Even a former Rich prosecutor
says that might be valid.  "I think it might have been a
legitimate argument," says Otto Obermaier, former U.S. attorney
for the Southern District of New York.

To Mr.  Obermaier and others, such arguments don't justify a
pardon. "If it was such a weak case, then why did they become
fugitives?" says former prosecutor Morris Weinberg.  "The essence
of this case was not a RICO case, it was in essence a tax-fraud
case.  You can argue that the law may have changed, but it hasn't
changed on avoiding $48 million in taxes."

Maybe it isn't feasible to gas and then burn all those people? This executioner guy 
would presumably know something about it. And don't you think it's a bit extreme to 
find people who gave unpopular expert testimony then try and get them fired from their 
jobs and harassed? How would you liek it if you were put on trial, and when you tried 
to hire expert witnesses they were too afraid of the government putting them on trial? 
Sounds like Soviet Russia to me.

This is when this trait comes in handy.

John Ashcroft was Governor of Missouri in from January 1985 to January
1993.

During his tenure, William Armentrout III was Warden of the State
Penitentiary and Chief Executioner of the State of Missouri.

In 1985, Ernst Zundel -- infamous Holocaust Denier (just put in the
name in
any search engine and see what you find) -- was on trial in Canada for
promoting hate in violation of the Canadian anti-hate law.

Guess who testified for the defense?  William Armentrout, Chief
Executioner
of the State of Missouri, who got up and claimed that it was impossible
to
gas all those millions of people.

I got it exposed around that time period in the state of Missouri.  If
I
recall correctly, I got the story on page one of the Kansas City Star
and
the St. Louis Post Dispatch.

What exactly did Governor Ashcroft do about this?  Armentrout should
have
been fired.  He wasn't.  Was he disciplinedI don't think so.

Spread the word about this.  People in the Senate need to start asking
Ashcroft what he did about the Armentrout-Zundel affair.

Overlooked in the batch of last-minute pardons and commutations
signed by ex-President Clinton was the name of Mel Reynolds, the
former Illinois congressmen who went to jail in 1994 for having
sex with a minor and solicitation of child pornography.

 After examining the evidence against Reynolds, it's easy to see
why Clinton sympathized with him.

Exhibit A was a tape of a lurid phone conversation Reynolds had
with his underage girlfriend, which surely must have impressed a
president who had regular phone sex chats with his own girlfriend
Monica Lewinsky.

 In one of the gamier exchanges, the former congressman proclaims
his good luck at the prospect of having a threesome with his
young ladyfriend and a Catholic schoolgirl.

"Did I win the lotto?" the delighted legislator asks.

 Reynolds' language is too filthy to reproduce here verbatim. But
even a censored version of his comments prompts questions about
Clinton's judgement in favoring such a pervert with a
commutation.

 We join Reynolds in mid conversation with his underage
girlfriend Bev:

 MEL: Oh boy, yeah, I was really looking forward to seeing you.

BEV: Yes, I was looking forward to seeing you also, yes.

MEL: How about can you, can you -- Is there any chance you can
leave later?

BEV: I'm waiting on her to come in. I'm just, uhm, I don't even
know because I -- She was supposed to be here about 4:00 o'clock
and she still hasn't made it in and I can't leave the kids here.

MEL: Have you -- of course not -- Have you spoken with her?

BEV: No, I haven't. She didn't call or anything.

MEL: (Expletive)

 BEV: That's what I'm saying. That's why I'm just hoping that
she's gonna walk in any minute. I don't have the number to
where's she --

MEL: How often have you -- how often have you babysat for her?

BEV: Oh, not very often. But like I say it was Karen's sister so
I went ahead and did it. And well, only about, uhm, three or four
times now. This has never happened so it had to be something
important.

MEL: Yeah.

BEV: Yes. So -- huh?

MEL: What you gonna wear?

BEV: Well, my peach underwear, like you told me to. I was hoping
that we could do something really special but I see that's not
gonna happen, I guess.

MEL: I was definitely gonna (sexual vulgarity) you.

 MEL: Right in my office. I was gonna (sexual vulgarity) too.

BEV: Really?

MEL: I was looking forward to it.

BEV: Yeah, I been thinking about a lot times we had together. We

you to think about sex.

 BEV: Yes.

MEL: And I want you to think long and hard. I want you to tell me
about a sex thing you did, that Idon't know about.

 BEV: Oh, let me see.

MEL: Like when you (sexual vulgarity) or something but it was a
time that I wasn't there for it.

BEV: Oh, so you don't want to talk about any of our stuff, you
want me to talk about something that you don't know about?

MEL: Right, a sex thing you did with some person, either a woman
or some guy or something. And -- cause I want to -- cause I'd
like to think about you in those little panties that I used to
(sexual vulgarity) you.

BEV: Yeah.

MEL: I like to think about somebody else doing the same thing to
you.

BEV: Okay. Uhm, ooh, let me see.

 MEL: Don't make nothing up.

BEV: Well, the only thing I have is Karen now.

THE Clintons are giving nouveau riche a bad name. Having made off
with all the furniture their moving van could carry, one assumes
that each of these couches, chairs and dishes will have their own
little plaque identifying the name of the donor. Like the seats
in the Metropolitan Opera House.

Apart from their little gift caper, worthy of Rooster Cockburn
and Mrs. Hanagan from the play Annie, the Clintons pardoned four
Hasidic criminals in return for 1,400 votes for Hillary and
pardoned Marc Rich to appease former White House Counsel Jack
Quinn, who knows all their secrets.

But this time, unlike after many of their previous shenanigans,
the media is onto them and their credibility is taking a beating.
Why can't the Clintons spin their way out of these latest
scandals? Why are they shipping water, their reputation swiftly
sinking?

The Clinton formula for damage control is well known, but it
can't work when he's out of the White House and she's a lowly
junior senator. Consider why. Normally the Clintons:

1) Put out a press spokesman to handle things and stay out of
sight.

Usually, a spinner on the order of Mike McCurry or a
damage-control specialist as good as George Stephanopoulos is
around to spin the media. Without the White House staff to flack
for them, the Clintons are helpless. Meanwhile, they can't stay
out of reach of the media. A president can hide for days. A first
lady can lie low for weeks. But a senator is fair game every time
she shows up for work and a private citizen is open to questions
whenever he walks the dog.

2) Let the story out when nobody is paying attention.

Usually the Clintons release bad news over a holiday or, at
least, on a Friday night. The Clintons goofed in letting these
stories out when everyone was glued to television as this unusual
transition came to a close and a new president was peacefully
inaugurated.

While we were all paying close attention, we read about Hillary's
book contract, their second multimillion-dollar home purchase,
Clinton's plea deal, the pardons, the trashing of the White House
and the Clintons' gifts, one after the other in a continuous
sleazy tableau.

3) Distract the nation with a new story.

Able to control the national news cycle, the Clintons could
always divert attention from bad news by making good news happen.
When former Arkansas Chief of Staff Betsey Wright was quoted as
saying that Clinton arranged for state troopers to get him women,
we in the White House generated stories to cover the flap.
Clinton intervened in the baseball strike, he announced possible
sanctions against China and he put out other important
announcements that weekend. Now it is beyond their ability to
create hard news. They have to let the media talk about what it
wants, none of it good for their reputations.

4) Distance themselves from bad events.

Blaming subordinates, colleagues, co-workers or friends for bad
stories has been a staple of the Clinton damage-control
operation. But these gifts are so personal, the pardons so
clearly a presidential decision and the plea deal so directly
Clinton's that it isn't possible to blame the McDougals or the
Tuckers or Vince Foster or various other hapless friends. They
have to take the rap themselves.

5) Put off bad news. Procrastinate.

The Clintons love to delay decisions that are bound to backfire.
But they ran out of time. They put off the pardons until the last
minute and decided to reveal their gifts only after Hillary was
elected. So, they had no choice but to make all this bad news
public at once in the final moments of his terms in office.

6) Focus on appeasing public opinion.

Above all, the Clintons always cared deeply what we think of
them. But now that she is elected for six years and he is out of
public life, they are adopting the Cornelius Vanderbilt school of
press relations - "the public be damned."

Over the years in Washington, the Clintons have become addicted
to money and luxury. The money from her and his - soon to be
announced - book deal is burning a hole in their pockets.
Determined to cash in on their opportunistic friendships while
they still had the White House to sell, they decided to take
their plush lifestyle with them, the devil with the consequences.

Without the White House to hide behind, the Clintons have no
choice but to take these shots on the chin, with inevitable
damage to their public standings.

Stage Three in Education Has Arrived

There is a fixed pattern in economic development that is not well
understood by the public. There are three main stages of
development. Using political terminology, I call these three stages
the oligarchic/autarchic,  the democratic, and the individualistic. I
realize that we lose some conceptual accuracy by transferring
concepts from one discipline  to another, but when no readily
recognized terms exist in one discipline, imports sometimes help.

Oligarchy

The oligarchic phase of an economy is where skilled craftsmen
produce mainly for the rich. The market is narrow. Competition
is based on quality rather than price. Meanwhile, poor families
produce for themselves (autarchy) and for barter with their
neighbors, with a few local producers of low-quality goods that are
priced in money, but at prices where the poor can just barely afford
them.

To maintain such a hierarchical, stratified economy, political
compulsion is mandatory. A common feature of the medieval
economy was the producers guild. Members of a guild cooperated
politically with members of other guilds in cities to pass laws that
restricted access to local consumers. A system of hierarchical
apprenticeship and screening was established by each guild in
order to restrict competition. The goal was to keep price
competitive products away from consumers. This subsidized those
who competed in terms of high quality rather than price. It kept the
masses poor.

Democracy

At some point, those producers with the ability to produce a larger
quantity of goods by means of a new technology break through the
legal barriers. They beat their way into the market by offering
significantly lower prices. The market responds to a fundamental
economic law: "At a lower price, other things remaining the
same, a greater quantity will be demanded." I call this the
democratic phase of economic development. It is marked by a
decline of political compulsion in the market.

Price competition is initially associated with lower quality,
but only when compared to quality that had been available to the
rich elite. For the poor, these new mass-produced products
represent a quantum leap in quality. Buyers who could never have
afforded to buy similar goods at the older, higher prices now find
new products available and affordable. For them, the quality seems
very high: something rather than nothing. The goods lower quality
in relation to the older array of prices and products is irrelevant
to the buyers.

Two groups oppose this development: those who produce for the
rich, who now find that some of their rich clients also like a
bargain; and those who produce for the poor, offering shoddy
merchandise at prices that the poor have barely been able to afford.
Both groups lose customers to the new producers.

Individualism

The new mass-market producers at first offer limited choices.
As was said of the Model T Ford, "You can get it in any color,
as long as you want black." The Model T opened the automobile
market to the growing American middle class. But in the 1920s,
General Motors took this market away from Ford by offering five
brands of GM cars and many options within each brand line. This
price competitive market had begun to increase diversity. Ford
and Chrysler had to imitate this multi-brand automobile marketing
strategy in order to survive. Then came foreign imports in the
1950s. Today, the level of diversity is beyond most car buyers
ability to monitor.

Here is the pattern. Price competition initially creates a mass
market for some product line by offering minimal diversity. But
as these new mass production techniques are imitated by
competitors, diversity raises its lovely head. Buyers then are
offered more choices at far lower prices than existed before the
initial market-creating breakthrough took place. They get rising
quality and falling prices.

The microcomputer has been the best example of this process of
diversification in a physical product line during the last two
decades. As for services, the best example is the steady erosion
of network televisions audience to cable and satellite channels.
This process even has a clever phrase: from broadcasting to
narrowcasting. This is the individualism phase. Buyers can get
pretty much what  they want.

Dell Computer will sell you a computer with most of the features
you can imagine. They will even help you to imagine lots of new
ones. Your computer is put together for you personally in Taiwan
(or wherever) and flown to the United States, to be delivered
to your door. This is truly a personal computer. All this came
about because a teenage Michael Dell started producing
microcomputers to order in his college dorm room back in the early
1980s. He still offers the same service, but he uses a much larger
room.

 I just watched a BBC program on the complete loss of privacy in UK. The fact
 you pooh pooh this says volumes.  Enjoy the gulag.

There is a show on PBS called "Mystery", which shows primarily British imports.

About a year ago on one of these imports, "Prime Suspect", a case of child rape/murder 
was solved due to these
cameras.  A big deal was made about how the suspect would never have been caught if it 
weren't for the fact
that the suspect's car was caught on one of these cameras, showing the suspect was at 
the location of the
crime at the time the crime was committed, when the suspect seemingly had an alibi for 
being elsewhere.

I thought at the time that it was very interesting that this British show presented 
these cameras so
matter-of-factly, and indeed I got the impression the whole plot twist of the cameras 
being used to solve a
horrific crime was orchestrated to help "sell" the idea of these cameras...

Sandra Blakeslee of the New York Times reported on Jan. 11 that the US
Food and Drug Administration's supposed 1997 ban on feeding rendered animal
protein to cows and other ruminant animals is full of loopholes, and moreover
that the so-called ban is not being enforced among the thousands of companies
involved in the $3.2 billion dollar rendering industry and the $20 billion dollar 
animal
feed industry.

As Blakeslee wrote: "Among 180 large companies that render cattle and another
ruminant, sheep, nearly a quarter were not properly labeling their products
and did not have a system to prevent commingling, the FDA said . . . Of
1,593 small feed producers that handle ruminant material and have been
inspected, 40 percent were not using approved labels and 25 percent had no
system in place to prevent commingling." In other words millions of US cows,
sheep, game farm deer and elk, and pigs, not to mention household pets, are
still being fed billions of pounds of animal feed or pet food containing
meat and offal from ruminant animals - despite the obvious danger to human
and animal health and despite the fact that the FDA and the USDA for the
past three years have been reassuring the public that this was no longer
happening. But the story gets scarier. In the Times on the front page of the
Sunday Jan. 14 edition, (tucked under a misleading headline "Stringent Steps
Taken by US on Cow Illness") Blakeslee drops the bombshell. Not only has the
US Mad Cow feed ban been a joke, but apparently US feed companies, pet food
companies, pharmaceutical firms, and nutritional supplement manufacturers
have been carrying on with business as usual by importing large quantities
of possibly contaminated bovine parts and rendered animal protein - no doubt
at bargain basement prices. . .

Opening gambit without strategy

First, the good news. Everybody in Davos knows that there is a problem
with globalisation. Things aren't working out the way they were supposed
to when the grand design was outlined at the start of the 90s. There's a
bit more humility and a greater willingness to accept that those who have
been warning about the nasty side-effects of one size fits all integration
might have a point.

Klaus Schwab, the man behind the World Economic Forum, neatly summed the
state of play when he said there were seven challenges of globalisation,
none of which seemed the slightest bit controversial. Schwab's list of
problems is worth considering, because it could be considered the modern
equivalent of the five giants identified by Beveridge as standing in the
way of progress when he was writing his report on the need for a
cradle-to-grave welfare state in 1942.
[ Note - I was twelve when -in the middle of a war the newspapers filled
with this "Beveridge Report" which proclaimed a vision of e.g FREEDOM FROM
HUNGER, FREEDOM FROM WANT. This is what set the stage for the creation of
the brit. National Health Service and other ideas of social service which
are being ( or have been) whittled away and replaced by nothing..

First on Schwab's list came the need to create conditions for faster
growth. Then he cited the need for environmental and social
sustainablility, followed by effective international peace keeping, a
narrowing of the technological and social gulf between rich and poor, the
need for higher standards of health and nutrition, a common understanding
of human rights and values and, finally, the safeguarding of cultural
identity in an increasingly homogenised world. Or, in the lingo of
Beveridge, Want, Pollution, War, Ignorance, Disease, Cruelty and
Uniformity.

The immediate riposte to Schwab's list is that this is a case of
motherhood and apple pie. But this has not always been so, even in the
recent past. The idea that globalisation has no future without greater
inclusion, without environmental sustainability and without a concern for
the human dimension, was certainly not in evidence in the first few years
after the Berlin Wall came down. But life has moved on. The climate is not
so benign and the Lyndon Johnson principle is now at work: it's better to
have the protestors inside the tent pissing out than on the outside
pissing in.

So, that's the good news. What's the bad news? Well, the fact that Davos
was turned into a fortress at the weekend is symptomatic of some deeper
malaise. Civil society representatives who were invited to take part in
the World Economic Forum were rightly concerned about the way in which the
Swiss government treated those who sought to express their concerns about
globalisation in a peaceful way on the town's streets.

What this means, of course, is that getting the rhetoric right is one
thing, changing behaviour is quite another. It's easy to make all the
right noises about making globalisation inclusive, but what does this mean
when the rich countries of the world are spending $1bn a day subsidising
their farmers, with the annual subsidy three times as large as the entire
amount spent on aid budgets? Not a lot...

How much credence should we give to those who argue that free trade will
work for everyone when the modest if welcome plan by the EU's trade
commissioner, Pascal Lamy, to give duty free access to all goods except
arms from the 48 poorest countries was met with a barrage of protectionist
objections from the big barons of the European sugar industry? Not a great
deal. How genuine is the commitment to tackling the epidemic of HIV-Aids
in Africa when the big drugs companies use their enormous financial and
legal clout to prevent poor countries from manufacturing their own cheap
generic cures? You tell me.

Moving from words to action is going to be tough. Playing chess is not
simply about knowing that a bishop moves diagonally or that a pawn can
move forward two squares on its first move, it is about the overall
strategy. Sometimes a tactical retreat paves the way for a strategic
advance. The good player also knows when to make a sacrifice.

Those running the global economy appear to lack the grand master strategy.
They have all their pieces but don't know how to play the game. The
chaotic state of Russia in its first decade after the collapse of
communism is largely due to the ill-conceived sequencing of moves, with
privatisation and the scrapping of foreign exchange controls leading to
larceny and capital flight on a grand scale. The economy halved in size in
a decade; male life expectancy dropped by 10 years.

Yes. It obviously is. But it has nothing to do with love. It is the result
of successful social evolution.


 Hierarchy is not hardwired into the system or else there would be no non
 hierarchical cultures.

Your premise is logical but wrong. Logic is only a human construct. Nature
is. Hierarchy is the norm. Nature allows for change and experimentation. It's
called evolution. You only have to look at the history of humans to determine
whether or not we are " hardwired " for hierarchy. It goes back a long way
into our anthropoid development. Hardwired in social evolution is not hard.
It's more like " firmwired." It must be stable enough to be continuous, but
flexible enough to deal with changeable conditions and environments.

 When, however, when hierarchy is imposed on a
 population, most members of that population tend to want to not  feel
 like they are at they bottom. Our rulers use this to manipulate us.
 Divide and conquer.

That's because they know we are hardwired for hierarchy. Yes people don't want
to be at the bottom, but they don't mind not being at the top either. The
middle is good. Hence it's OK to be middle class but not low class.

 George W. Bush's "new" Republican Party presented itself to the national
 convention last summer with much talk of unity, consensus,
 bipartisanship--even compassion.  Bush aides carefully prescreened all
 speeches, deftly removing the word *impeachment* from each; you had to
 strain to hear the word *conservative*.  Bush lieutenants blocked the
 Reverend Pat Robertson from speaking, replacing him in the party pantheon
 with General Colin Powell, who is reviled by members of the extreme
 right.  All in all it was an impressive show designed to win support from
 independent voters, like me, who had turned from the party during the
 fanatical Gingrich era.  Still, I wanted to ask Bush, who did not
 acknowledge the role his own party's leaders had played in creating so much
 rancor, exactly what he thought was wrong with the old party.  And also:
 Where did he think all those rancorous old Republicans would go?  Having
 been in and around the conservative movement for 15 years, I knew how
 unlikely it was that the party could transform itself overnight.

 It didn't take long for Republican loyalists to junk the pretty bipartisan
 rhetoric.  In the hours and weeks following Election Day, a predictable
 cast of extreme right-wing players, many of them ex-associates and
 ex-friends of mine, emerged from the woodwork where they'd been hidden--or
 had hidden themselves--during the presidential campaign.  House Majority
 Whip Tom DeLay, for example, organized what conservative Wall Street
 Journal columnist Paul Gigot approvingly called "a bourgeois riot" in
 Miami.  Rush Limbaugh exhorted millions of Dittoheads, "We're fighting for
 our lives!" Pundit Ann Coultier referred to the justices of the Florida
 Supreme Court as "aspiring Pol Pots." Former Newt Gingrich strategist Tony
 Blankley wrote of Gore supporters, "They are Americans by birth, but they
 might as well be Martian reptiles for all the moral kinship they have with
 us." Appellate superlawyer Ted Olson made sweetly reasoned arguments before
 the U.S. Supreme Court.  (When I worked at The American Spectator he was
 involved with the magazine's Arkansas Project, a multimillion-dollar
 dirt-digging operation against the Clintons, the very hub of "the vast
 right-wing conspiracy.") All over the down-channel cable news shows,
 gray-suited Republican lawyers who had helped me attack Anita Hill a decade
 ago droned on about law and victory.  Even Newt Gingrich, whose
 win-at-any-cost spirit seemed to animate the Republicans' invective,
 surfaced from seclusion and made righteous appearances on television in the
 days immediately following the election.

 The Republicans' dramatic postelection display shows how deeply ingrained
 apocalyptic fervor, vitriolic rhetoric, and primal rage are in both GOP
 history and the psyche of its chief ideologists.  In the aftermath of the
 election it is clear that fury--if not blind fury--will be shaping

 election is rooted in the war over judicial nominees that began in the late

 nominees to the nation's top courts.  "There really is a line from Broward
 County that goes all the way back to what *they* did to [failed Supreme
 Court nominee Robert] Bork: the attacks, and lies, and misrepresentations,"
 says former Delaware governor Pete DuPont. "Then they almost did the same
 thing to [Supreme Court justice] Clarence Thomas.  I think this time
 conservatives finally decided to stand tall." Gingrich was in on the
 tone-setting war from the start.  Writing shortly after Bork's defeat, he
 promised to fight the Democrats "with the scale and duration and savagery
 that is true only of civil wars."

 It didn't take long to see that Gingrich and the people around him weren't
 conservatives in the original sense of the word; they were power-hungry
 radicals who consciously adopted the street-fighting political style of the
 '60s for their own ends.  In the early '90s Gingrich's posse hung out at
 the Capitol Hill row house of Grover Norquist, an antitax lobbyist whom The
 New Republic once called the "Che [Guevara] of the Republican Revolution."
 At Norquist's parties, where conservatives convened to drink kegs and
 grouse about the latest liberal outrages, I ran into former Reagan and Bush
 speechwriter Peggy Noonan, Weekly Standard editor William Kristol,
 conservative pundit Laura Ingraham, Wall Street Journal editorial writer
 John Fund, and many of the figures you saw kicking and screaming on TV
 about the "stolen" election.  The integrity of ballots was the last thing I
 ever thought

If this reporting is true then it is difficult to imagine a greater insult

Remember how I said we should be on the look out for key assassinations like
the Reagan/Bush rub out of John Lennon which would set the tenor of the
entire administration?  Coming during the president elect period as the
Lennon assassination, this assassination of a thorn in the side of the Bush
family businesses seems a more likely example of this than I could think up
myself.

 The failure of both Bill Clinton and George W. Bush to express even the
 most
 perfunctory regret over the assassination of Congo President Laurent
 Dsir
 Kabila betrays how implicated Washington is in this latest outrage
 against
 the most important country in central Africa.

 Washington's silence is even more glaring considering that its foreign
 policy experts are well aware that the African people view the secret
 intelligence agencies of the U.S. government, which work closely with
 corporations seeking vast fortunes in the region, as the probable
 authors of
 this crime.

 George Bush Sr., father of the president, even had an intimate
 connection with one of these plundering corporations.

 But this is not mentioned in the commercial media, which, as usual, go
 even further than indifference to insult the fallen head of state, while
 speculating on the breakup of the Congo.

 What they carefully omit in their reporting is the deadly record of U.S.
 interventions in the Congo, beginning with President Dwight D.
 Eisenhower's
 order at a meeting of the National Security Council on Aug. 18, 1960, to

 assassinate Patrice Lumumba. Lumumba was the young and inspiring
 independence leader who was briefly the Congo's first president. The
 40th anniversary of his assassination, Jan.17 of this year, was the day
 after
 Kabila was shot.

 The U.S. media are today blaming Kabila for failing to bring peace to
 the Congo. This is a monstrous charge, since Washington is largely
 responsible for the war that has crushed the Congolese people's hopes for
 a better
 life since the overthrow of dictator Mobutu Sese Seko. The Congo
 government
 has been trying to expel Rwandan and Ugandan
 troops that invaded eastern Congo in August 1998. The U.S. has secretly
 supported them and their occupation of this area of fabulous mineral
 wealth.

 The Congo's allies in this war are Zimbabwe, Angola and Namibia--all
 countries that had to fight racist colonial regimes to win their
 independence.

 The invaders, on the other hand, have been supplied with high-tech
 weaponry and communications and transportation equipment by their
 imperialist
 backers. There is evidence of military training and coordination from
 the Pentagon and the involvement of mercenary companies, including MPRI of

 the U.S., Executive Outcome of South Africa, and Sandline of Britain.

 KABILA RESISTED 'GLOBALIZATION'

 What U.S. corporations wanted from Kabila, and what he refused to give,
 was outright control over an area that contains some of the world's most
 important deposits of gold, diamonds, cobalt, manganese, uranium,
 copper, zinc, germanium, silver, lead, iron and tungsten.

 It has been Washington's theme song for the last decade that oppressed
 countries must join the "global economy"--meaning sell off state-owned
 enterprises to imperialist investors, open their domestic markets and
 devalue their currencies, thus further lowering the standard of living.

 Even Mobutu tried to resist this and hold on to state control over the
 mines--one of the reasons the U.S. decided to dump him after having
 propped him up for almost 35 years.  Washington helped a coalition force
 headed
 by Kabila but based on Rwandan and Ugandan military forces to topple
 Mobutu in 1997.

 But once Kabila became president, he surprised his former allies by
 refusing to be a puppet and trying to rally the Congolese people to unite
 and
 defend their country's sovereignty.

 European corporations during the period of the alliance

 and directing any storm. As often as the Illuminati depicts Lucifer as an
 "angel", I was certain this statement was code, directed at occultists
 throughout the world.

 I immediately contacted Cisco Wheeler, a former Illuminist Satanist, now a
 Born Again Christian.  She has worked with Christian author, Fritz
 Springmeier in books on Illuminati Mind Control.  Cisco had not seen Bush's
 Inaugural Address, so I emailed the text to her. Her reaction was swift and
 excited:  George W. had, indeed, spoken in Illuminist code!

 Remember the situation George W. was facing on January 20, 2001.  Left Wing
 Illuminist President Bill Clinton was passing the baton off to Right Wing
 George W. Bush.  While most of the Illuminists throughout the world were
 sure that George W. was just as Illuminist as Clinton, they were looking for
 a sign or signs during the Inaugural ceremony that would confirm their
 belief.

 As we reported in NEWS1463, George W. Bush gave strong visible signals
 during his Inaugural ceremony.  Bush "faced the obelisk" during this
 ceremony,  as he faced the Washington Monument, the world's most important
 and famous obelisk.  All Illuminists throughout the world would immediately
 be alerted that George W. was a committed Illuminist and would continue to
 work toward the global plan to so change the world that a One-World
 Government, Economy, and Religion could achieve a "take-off" position that

 WHO SUCKS THIS WEEK? CNN FALLING, AOL GALLING

 "They send out legions of brainwashed reporters like a million marching ants
 ready to devour the carcass of a roach called truth. No longer is it merely
 a question of objectivity. CNN has moved beyond a lack of objectivity into
 disinformation: dispensing information they know to be wrong as a weapon
 against political foes." Me-August 11, 2000.

 As the mighty ax of indiscriminate mass firings continues to bloody the
 waters at CNN, many find it difficult to remain unemotional about the human
 consequences of such a situation. Not me. With a speed rivaling the downfall
 of the Soviet Union, or worse yet, House Speaker* Bob Livingston, CNN has
 fallen and hopefully won't get up.

 Like the Soviet Union, CNN is an evil empire collapsing of its own
 self-indulgence. Every step of the way, the people at CNN could have
 reported the news in a fair and balanced way. Instead, they chose to report
 the news as they wish it were, particularly when covering politics. Despite
 the emergence of new cable news competitors and in the face of plummeting
 ratings, CNN chose to hire producers and put on the air a collection of
 reporters whose liberal bias could hardly be overstated.

 Like the Soviet Union, it was those at the top who ran CNN into the ground
 while the little people suffered. Therefore, it is no surprise to me that
 the people who brought us Time Magazine, America Online, and Both Sides With
 Jesse Jackson are managing the wave of layoffs much like the Kremlin
 would've dealt with TASS 20 years ago. The shock of CNN's massive firings
 has given way to outrage over the manner in which they were conducted.
 "INHUMAN RESOURCES" charged one news headline. "CNN TELLS STAFFERS TO GET
 OUT; GUARD ESCORTS, COMPUTER SHUT DOWNS, TEARS!" screams the headline at The
 Drudge Report. "Insiders describe a company in turmoil, with staffers
 watching as their shattered colleagues return from the Human Resources
 Department in tears - and then nervously wondering if they're next."

 Though I'm delighted with CNN's downturn, I truly do not wish financial or
 personal hardship on any CNN employee (except for Tucker Carlson, Greta Van
 Susteren and Bill Press, of course). I wish only the best for those at CNN
 who fear they are next to be axed. For some I wish a personal heaven, for
 others something a little warmer. My wish for Candy Crowley is that she wins
 the Oscar for her film debut in the John Candy Story. I wish Bernie Shaw
 success...as the first black Elvis impersonator to headline at the Cherokee
 Indian owned Chief Talking Ass Lounge and Casino, located in Tunica,
 Mississippi.

 It is my wish that Judy Woodruff find her true calling as a female wrestler
 (no biting, Judy). I hope that Jeff Greenfield finds success at ABC, where
 he is forced to remove the layers of grease covering Peter Jennings' skin.
 It is my fondest wish that Greta Van Susteren be forced to spend the rest of
 her life as law clerk to Barbara Olsen. My wish for Tucker Carlson is that
 he be damned to a life as Margaret Carlson's "house boy," the highlight of

 Look at them! Call me old fashioned, but I'm a tad leery of these corporate

 had Ted Turner, but AOL et.al has Gerald Levin, and Ted Turner has nothing

 Warner, and his goal in life is the creation of a global giant - or

Securities Company in Washington, DC. I declined an offer from the
Administration to be nominated as a governor of the Federal Reserve Board.

An equivalently funny event is when people misstate such slang, such as when an idiot 
at my former place of work told a colleague he 'didn't want to piss in her pants' (!)

Courting the presidential con

It's over a week since Bill Clinton copped a plea before relinquishing the White
House to George W. Bush, and yet the stench of his occupancy still lingers.
Certainly the former president's interminable farewell, meant to upstage the new
president on his inauguration day, will long be remembered as the ne plus ultra of
boorish political leave-taking.  But other facts emerged last week that justify the
investigation by Chairman of the House Government Reform Committee Dan Burton into
Clinton's last presidential deeds.


The whirlwind of revelations regarding the Clintons' final, self-serving days
include a hefty haul of presidential gifts the Clintons themselves selected for
wealthy supporters to donate before Jan. 3 when Hillary Clinton's lust to have
others furnish her newly-purchased mansions would become severely constricted by
Senate ethics rules.


The next assault upon citizens' sensitivities involved the former president's
questionable pardons of some mighty curious folks in contradiction to the wishes of
prosecutors from their own Justice Department, and who were largely bypassed in the
process.


And, finally, taxpayers learned of one last mugging when reports emerged detailing
the Clinton entourage's looting aboard a presidential aircraft for the Saturday
flight to New York from D.C., and their underlings' extensive vandalism in both the
White House's West Wing and the vice president's offices in the Old Executive Office
Building.


The thefts and the vandalism speak to the character of a group of people who did not
believe that they served at the people's pleasure, but rather thought of their
political power as an entitlement.  The other revelations speak not only to the ways
in which both Clintons and their minions intend to reclaim that imagined
entitlement, but also how they intend to cover up while enjoying the fruits of their
many felonies.


Felonies?  Yes, felonies.


Trillions are missing from federal agencies.  That's right, gone.  Poof!  As in,
"Nowhere to be found." People familiar with government accounts have charged off the
record that in 1996 a concerted and intentional effort began with the support of the
Office of Management and Budget and Treasury to strip agencies of honest officials
and internal financial controls.


Allegedly, the reports of missing money at the various agencies started rising
exponentially in 1998 and 1999, but the actual problem began with Al Gore's
"Reinventing Government" initiative.  It was in the Clinton administration's first
term that inspector generals and their staffs (each federal agency is assigned an
inspector general who audits and monitors each agency's accounts and activities)
were instructed to begin collaborating with their agencies -- a most peculiar
instruction.  As one frustrated inspector general remarked, "How can I collaborate
with the very people I am meant to police?"


Unsurprisingly, during the Clintons' time in office the ranks of the inspector 
generals were demoralized, and, in some cases, corrupted.


This background is what made Robert Pear's Jan. 18 New York Times article, "Financial 
Problems in Government Are Rife, Nation's Top Auditor Says," so very timely.  The 
comptroller general, David M. Walker, reported that "
the Pentagon's financial statements are in such poor condition they cannot be audited, 
and that most other agencies do not comply with federal accounting standards."  The 
result is that the comptroller general "cannot cer
tify the accuracy of consolidated financial statements for the government as a whole."


The report added, "Federal auditors have been complaining about this problem for 
several years."


In other words, the Clintonista's looting did not begin or end with the purloining of 
cutlery, china, linen and other items bearing the presidential seal aboard the Boeing 
747 President Bush made available to the Clintons
 and their guests for their departure from Washington on Inauguration Day.  It began 
on the 20th of January, 1993, continued throughout their administration in a 
bewildering number of financial games involving domestic ag
encies, foreign-aid agencies, development agencies and multilateral lenders, and has 
not yet ended.


The presidential looting has not ended, because the pardons of Patty Hearst, insider 
trader Salim ("Sandy") Lewis, commodities outlaw Marc Rich and his partner Pincus 
Green, money-launderer Harvey Weinig, and questionable
 others all speak to the future, not the past.  Sandy Lewis, Patty Hearst, Marc Rich 
and his former wife, Denise Rich, will all be expected to play a significant support 
role in Hillary Clinton's political future. And tha
t means moola.  Piles of it.

A world order designed to serve economic imperatives

WORLD VIEW:  We are entering a dangerous topsyturvy world where language is
subverted in a way that would have abashed even George Orwell: danger is presented
as security, violence as peace, and the poachers have become the gamekeepers.
Ireland, with its temporary seat on the United Nations Security Council, should be
using its influence to debate world security and raise concern over what appears to
be a new arms race. Unfortunately, as a conference organised by the peace group Afri
will hear today, the evidence suggests this State is meekly going with the
destructive flow of powerful interests.
First, let's go back 10 years. We were then promised a "new world order" in which
democracy and the rule of international law would be cherished and protected.
Western leaders galvanised the nations of the world to supposedly defend democracy
and national sovereignty as the first instalment of their noble vision.
No matter that the Butcher of Baghdad was an erstwhile Western ally and Kuwait was,
and still is, an oil-rich petty fiefdom.  Western ideologues were cranking up a
propaganda charm offensive, proclaiming a fresh start to international relations
supposedly founded on noble values of mutual respect and cooperation - the
realisation of the UN Charter, no less.
With the Cold War out of the way, so it was argued, the nations would now be free to
act in unison to defend the foundations of democracy, even if it meant bombing
miscreants back to the Stone Age.
Ten years on it is clear that the so-called new world order and its grandiose claims 
lie in ruins as sure as the cancer-eaten bodies of children in Iraq and former 
Yugoslavia. World security and the promise of a peace div
idend have been shelved, although Western leaders still cynically use the language of 
human rights and democracy to justify their actions.
What is truly startling is how quickly the moral veil of the UN has been jettisoned. 
At the dawn of the new world order, enunciated by President George Bush snr, the moral 
authority of the UN was deemed to be a necessary
illusion. Now the Western powers, primarily the US and the UK, are apparently 
emboldened enough to go it alone.
The UN-sanctioned Operation Desert Storm against Iraq was quickly followed by 
Operation Restore Hope in which the US unilaterally sent its troops and gunships into 
Somalia. Less than a decade later NATO would launch a war
 in Europe with the UN not even consulted.
Some observers did note that NATO bombing of the former Yugoslavia with radioactive 
depleted uranium shells was an illegal war, but by this stage President Clinton and 
Prime Minister Blair were past caring about such cens
ure.
OMINOUSLY, the American dissident Noam Chomsky says the NATO action in former 
Yugoslavia signals a contempt for international law not seen since the 1930s.
He notes that the real agenda behind the cynical use of this gratuitous aggression, 
dressed up in the language of human rights and defence of democracy, is the stamping 
of authority in a world order designed to serve West
ern economic imperatives of so-called free markets.
In this way the new world order is not much different from the old. One difference, 
however, was that the Mutually Assured Destruction of the Cold War served to curb 
Western aggression. That check is no longer there, and
the Western powers increasingly feel free to wield the doctrine of Might is Right.
It is somehow fitting that one of the architects of the new world order, George Bush, 
is now succeeded by his son. Even before taking office, Bush jnr signalled a more 
aggressive military policy, primarily in his backing
of the National Missile Defence (Star Wars) programme. Concerns among Western allies, 
notably France and Germany, are brushed aside in a manner which confirms the adage of 
absolute power corrupting absolutely.
This together with his tougher diplomatic stance towards Russia is predictably leading 
to a deteriorating international climate, fuelling insecurity and a new phase of the 
arms race.
Russia was reported earlier this month to have reintroduced nuclear weapons into the 
Baltic region, after having removed them from eastern Europe when the Soviet Union 
collapsed in 1991.
Observers note that due to the dilapidated state of its conventional armed forces, 
Russia is now relying even more on its huge nuclear arsenal as a deterrent.
President Vladimir Putin is also making overtures to China for a new military alliance 
as a counterweight to the Star Wars initiative and the expansion of NATO in Europe.
The joining of the NATO-inspired Partnership for Peace (another example of Orwellian 
doublespeak) by Ireland only serves to reinforce this negative dynamic.  It's all a 
far cry from what was heroically promised in the hea
dy days of the new world
