The high-profile Harvard law professor said he has been retained by a British law firm handling the appeal of terrorist Abdel Basset al-Megrahi, who was convicted of the mass murder earlier this year by a Scottish court convened in the Netherlands. I didn't know anything, and that's what I've said, that's what my brother's lawyer has said, she told The Associated Press. That happens to be the truth. In the memo, which surfaced this week, Rodham was said to claim he had his sister's backing in seeking a pardon for Vignali - among 177 pardons and clemencies then-President Bill Clinton granted on his last day in office. Hugh says this is very important to him and the First Lady, as well as others, says the unsigned memo, written on White House stationery and discovered in a file owned by former deputy White House counsel Bruce Lindsey. Lindsey oversaw the pardon process. A former senior Clinton official said: All this proves is Hugh Rodham had bad judgment and tried to throw his weight around. Vignali's family paid Rodham $204,000 in an effort to coax the President into granting the pardon. Rodham and Hillary Clinton have denied that she knew anything about her brother's pardon push. -Caveat Lector- Top FBI Officials Facing Inquiry Retaliation Alleged In Ruby Ridge Probe By George Lardner Jr. and Dan Eggen Washington Post Staff Writers Thursday, August 9, 2001; Page A01 The Justice Department's inspector general has opened an investigation of alleged retaliation by senior FBI officials against agents who uncovered flaws in the bureau's handling of the 1992 siege at Ruby Ridge, Idaho, and its aftermath. Investigators want to determine whether one agent's career was derailed and another was threatened for their pursuit of FBI abuses during the 11-day incident and the shortcomings of the bureau's reviews of who was responsible. The probe, officials said, also will delve into broader complaints about a double standard of discipline at the FBI that many agents say serves to protect top managers from punishment and has sapped morale. In particular, they said, the probe will examine the Justice Department's decision last January not to censure FBI Director Louis J. Freeh or discipline three other FBI veterans in the Ruby Ridge case. Freeh, who retired in June, may be interviewed, officials said. The investigation is at least the sixth review of FBI conduct ordered in recent months, as news of a spy scandal, misplaced documents in the Oklahoma City bombing case and missing weapons has spilled from FBI headquarters. Inspector General Glenn A. Fine is heading the Ruby Ridge probe, which has been underway since late spring. Fine's office last month was given broader powers to monitor the FBI. Many rank-and-file FBI agents have long complained that top bureau officials have covered for each other during controversies. A 1999 internal report found that members of the Senior Executive Service (SES) were far less likely to be disciplined for most complaints than other employees. Freeh responded by giving a single panel power over discipline for all employees, disbanding an SES board. Michael R. Bromwich, a former Justice Department inspector general who was frequently rebuffed in his attempts to investigate the FBI, said a probe into allegations of retaliation would focus attention on charges that a culture of arrogance within the bureau thwarts accountability and outside oversight. Fine's Ruby Ridge inquiry was triggered by the protests of agents who spent years examining the inadequacies of the FBI's early reviews of the bloody siege. The wife of separatist Randy Weaver, their 14-year-old son and a federal marshal were killed in the siege. The agents -- John E. Roberts, John Werner and Frank L. Perry -- said they were outraged when they learned that final recommendations for disciplinary action against Freeh and three other FBI veterans had been rejected in the closing days of the Clinton administration. The agents, who had been detached from the FBI to work on the case for the Justice Department, told the Senate Judiciary Committee last month that they had been subjected to threats and retaliation by senior FBI officials for conducting an aggressive investigation. Censure, the mildest form of discipline, was proposed for Freeh. They were also openly critical of their boss at the FBI's Office of Professional Responsibility, Assistant FBI Director Michael DeFeo. Perry said DeFeo fought their recommendation to clear the names of three agents who, the agents concluded, had been unfairly disciplined in 1994 for failures at Ruby Ridge. An FBI spokesman said DeFeo would not comment on the criticism. The Justice Department's Office of Professional Responsibility and a Justice Management Division task force recommended the sanctions against Freeh and the others. But Stephen R. Colgate, then assistant attorney general for administration, decided on Jan. 3, 2001, to impose no new discipline in the Ruby Ridge case and not to rescind any earlier punishments. The prime target of the alleged retaliation was Roberts. He testified that he came under pressure almost immediately after he and Werner were assigned in May 1995 to determine whether earlier reviews of Ruby Ridge had unfairly blamed lower-level officials. Roberts said he and Werner were told by senior FBI executives that our assignment to the Ruby Ridge investigation could have an impact on our careers. Roberts said his wife, an FBI support employee, was hounded from her job in the Boston division and that his attempts to win a promotion have been rejected 14 times. Werner testified that Roberts has had his career seriously impaired because of his hard work on a number of high-profile cases, including Ruby Ridge. Werner said in an interview that he, too, was subjected to threats, but they had no impact because, unlike Roberts, he stayed out of the FBI's career development program. He is now retired. Justice Department officials have declined to comment on the specific claims of retaliation. -Caveat Lector- Source: Cornell University News Service (http://www.news.cornell.edu/) Date: Posted 8/8/2001 Ethanol Fuel From Corn Faulted As Unsustainable Subsidized Food Burning In Analysis By Cornell Scientist ITHACA, N.Y. -- Neither increases in government subsidies to corn-based ethanol fuel nor hikes in the price of petroleum can overcome what one Cornell University agricultural scientist calls a fundamental input-yield problem: It takes more energy to make ethanol from grain than the combustion of ethanol produces. At a time when ethanol-gasoline mixtures (gasohol) are touted as the American answer to fossil fuel shortages by corn producers, food processors and some lawmakers, Cornell's David Pimentel takes a longer range view. Abusing our precious croplands to grow corn for an energy-inefficient process that yields low-grade automobile fuel amounts to unsustainable, subsidized food burning, says the Cornell professor in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Pimentel, who chaired a U.S. Department of Energy panel that investigated the energetics, economics and environmental aspects of ethanol production several years ago, subsequently conducted a detailed analysis of the corn-to-car fuel process. His findings will be published in September, 2001 in the forthcoming Encyclopedia of Physical Sciences and Technology . Among his findings are: o An acre of U.S. corn yields about 7,110 pounds of corn for processing into 328 gallons of ethanol. But planting, growing and harvesting that much corn requires about 140 gallons of fossil fuels and costs $347 per acre, according to Pimentel's analysis. Thus, even before corn is converted to ethanol, the feedstock costs $1.05 per gallon of ethanol. o The energy economics get worse at the processing plants, where the grain is crushed and fermented. As many as three distillation steps are needed to separate the 8 percent ethanol from the 92 percent water. Additional treatment and energy are required to produce the 99.8 percent pure ethanol for mixing with gasoline. o Adding up the energy costs of corn production and its conversion to ethanol, 131,000 BTUs are needed to make 1 gallon of ethanol. One gallon of ethanol has an energy value of only 77,000 BTU. Put another way, Pimentel says, about 70 percent more energy is required to produce ethanol than the energy that actually is in ethanol. Every time you make 1 gallon of ethanol, there is a net energy loss of 54,000 BTU. o Ethanol from corn costs about $1.74 per gallon to produce, compared with about 95 cents to produce a gallon of gasoline. That helps explain why fossil fuels -- not ethanol -- are used to produce ethanol, Pimentel says. The growers and processors can't afford to burn ethanol to make ethanol. U.S. drivers couldn't afford it, either, if it weren't for government subsidies to artificially lower the price. o Most economic analyses of corn-to-ethanol production overlook the costs of environmental damages, which Pimentel says should add another 23 cents per gallon. Corn production in the U.S. erodes soil about 12 times faster than the soil can be reformed, and irrigating corn mines groundwater 25 percent faster than the natural recharge rate of ground water. The environmental system in which corn is being produced is being rapidly degraded. Corn should not be considered a renewable resource for ethanol energy production, especially when human food is being converted into ethanol. o The approximately $1 billion a year in current federal and state subsidies (mainly to large corporations) for ethanol production are not the only costs to consumers, the Cornell scientist observes. Subsidized corn results in higher prices for meat, milk and eggs because about 70 percent of corn grain is fed to livestock and poultry in the United States Increasing ethanol production would further inflate corn prices, Pimentel says, noting: In addition to paying tax dollars for ethanol subsidies, consumers would be paying significantly higher food prices in the marketplace. Nickels and dimes aside, some drivers still would rather see their cars fueled by farms in the Midwest than by oil wells in the Middle East, Pimentel acknowledges, so he calculated the amount of corn needed to power an automobile: o The average U.S. automobile, traveling 10,000 miles a year on pure ethanol (not a gasoline-ethanol mix) would need about 852 gallons of the corn-based fuel. This would take 11 acres to grow, based on net ethanol production. This is the same amount of cropland required to feed seven Americans. o If all the automobiles in the United States were fueled with 100 percent ethanol, a total of about 97 percent of U.S. land area would be needed to grow the corn feedstock. Corn would cover nearly the total land area of the United States. Horowitz was mainly talking from his new book Death in the Air. He discussed a lot of things not just chemtrails. What I was surprised at was the knowledge of the interviewer Richard S..something, who had answers ready for a debunker who got so excited that he phoned in before the show to say how these were ice crystals blah blah...and Richard said they didn't behave like ice crystals at all. He talked about them covering the sky, and people becoming very worried. Horowitz acknowledged that biological components were discovered in the chemtrails and that he was in no doubt that this was a world wide plan of depopulation, stating that first the substances of the chemtrail served to weaken the immune system and then the viruses were added to infect the weakened immune system. He talked about the 'illuminati' the 13 families pulling the political strings of elected leaders. He jumped to the West Nile Virus stating that a bogus threat was created so that the Public health depts could have an excuse to spray whole towns. He believes that Depts. of Public health everywhere are involved in the depopulation conspiracy. There was only time for a few callers. One wanted to know the connections with the masons. some of the questions I didn't understand as I am not familiar with Horowitz work. Apparently there were lots of emails to the station when word about the show came out. Several people thanked the host for bringing this subject to the people. Richard thought the lines came only at night, so it looks like he was not familiar with the sight of the chemtrails but he sure is now. He asked Horowitz what happens when people complain to the authorities, and H. replied that 'nobody knows anything'. There are so many tiers and levels that one cannot find the people who know anything. Benning, Georgia. John then began to re-live an event which he said came as a surprise to all of us. It just happened. We were very frightened of this unusual light. This was a mass parade formation. There was 1,300 people. Where was this exactly? This was at the 1st A.I.T. (Army Infantry Training) Battalion post, it was a combat training group, infantrymen. We're talking right now about September 2nd, 1977. I know it sounds really wild, but I started investigating this whole event in '91. And slowly I conducted my own personal investigation into this event at Ft. Benning. I've been Finding a lot of documents and quotes concerning an unusual event at Ft. Benning, because we had the Secretary of the Army, Clifford Alexander being present, at Ft. Benning. Normally it would have been someone from the Chiefs of Staff, a four-star general evaluating this JAWS test. And, I do have a JAWS test document at this time. It's written by the air force and I have the letter from them. [I did indeed see this letter and it was recorded on film - GWB] THE EVENT It was an evening parade. There were thirteen-hundred men. We had to account for the staff and captains and XO's [executive officers]. We were standing in formation and somebody in front of me mentioned something in the sky and I didn't think nothing of it because I was just looking at stars. So I said. What is it'? The guy in front of me said. 'Just keep looking'. So I did and all of a sudden this star moved, in a gradual, floating way. I thought it was a satellite. This sergeant, who was standing behind me asked. 'What do you think it is?' I just said. 'Satellite'. All of a sudden, this star just stopped, and then it moved away from us; came back and it moved again, stopped and moved away again, came back, and continued on. At this time, the same sergeant ordered us to stand to attention, and you can't move at all then. But I kinda glanced up to see where this thing went. and it was gone. And this is when the captain, our captain of Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Infantry, was walking out of this building to make a speech. And this speech was to advise us of our 6-8 week training course. Just when he was walking to this podium to make his speech. I heard this rushing' noise and I leaned back and looked across, to my left. I saw this bright light, an intense bright light. I thought it was a jeep, a truck or something. And it was moving across, slowly. THE SLEEP I saw some of Charlie Company's men running out of their formation, others were standing still. So I needed to lake a better look at this. I leaned forward. When I leaned forward this bright light just got really close and it was headed between the tree-lines. And I still thought it was a truck, but the light was really, really intense. I mean, it's a white, bright light, and it had this bluish outline to it. I looked at this thing and I thought. 'I don't know what this is'. Well. the guy who was standing in front of me, I wanted to say something to him, ask him what it was, but when I looked at him, he was asleep. His head was bowed, his eyes were closed, he was asleep. So I leaned back again, I don't know what happened here, but I was unconscious for a few minutes. When I came to, I was looking down and I couldn't move. I couldn't move my feet. And I tried desperately to move from where I was standing. -Caveat Lector- Wednesday August 8 4:44 PM ET IRS Chief Got Ethics Waiver By CURT ANDERSON AP Tax Writer WASHINGTON (AP) - IRS Commissioner Charles Rossotti promised to divest his millions of dollars of stock in an information technology business he co-founded if it proved to be a conflict. Then he obtained an ethics waiver allowing him to keep the stock and still take part in decisions affecting IRS contracts with the company. Then-Deputy Treasury Secretary Stuart Eizenstat granted the waiver in December, though he said Rossotti's stock in American Management Systems Inc. (AMSY - news) would normally have precluded his participation in a new accounting project because ``certain decisions would have a direct and predictable effect on your financial interest'' in the company. But Eizenstat said the importance of modernizing Internal Revenue Service computers and American Management Systems' limited role in the accounting project led him to conclude Rossotti's involvement ``is not so substantial as to be deemed likely to affect the integrity'' of his decision making. Officials said the waiver was a technicality, that Rossotti played no role in expanding his company's contracts with IRS and that both Congress and the Office of Government Ethics were told about the waiver and raised no objections. ``By any measure, it was a relatively minor thing,'' said Ken Schmalzbach, assistant general counsel and chief ethics official at the Treasury Department. ``It was important for him to have that waiver. It was important to the service.'' Generally speaking, Schmalzbach said the work the company does under its existing IRS contracts does not rise to the commissioner's decision-making level, which was a key factor in Rossotti's ability to keep his stock in the first place. Rossotti was vacationing this week and unavailable for comment. Some government watchdog groups question Rossotti's decision to keep the stock and the propriety of the waiver. ``It's a conflict of interest,'' said Meredith McGehee, senior vice president at Common Cause. ``I don't think the waiver will give people confidence that he doesn't have a conflict of interest.'' Rossotti co-founded Fairfax, Va.-based AMS in 1970. He was its chairman when tapped by then-President Clinton in 1997 to run the IRS for a five-year term, which ends in November 2002. On his most recent personal financial disclosure form, Rossotti and his wife reported owning AMS common stock worth between $5 million and $25 million. He also reported sole ownership of other AMS shares valued at between $1 million and $5 million. AMS is one of the 20 largest business and information technology consulting firms worldwide with 2000 revenue of over $1 billion. It has ongoing contracts dating back to 1990 for a budget accounting system with the IRS. The IRS has either paid or will pay AMS about $82.5 million under those contracts, according to agency officials. They said there have been no new contracts signed between the IRS and the company since Rossotti's government appointment. Rossotti's decision to continue holding stock in his company differs from several recent Bush administration officials who chose to sell interest in companies after facing conflict-of-interest questions. Treasury Secretary Paul O'Neill in June sold almost $100 million of stock in the aluminum company he ran for 13 years. White House political adviser Karl Rove unloaded millions of dollars of stock he owned in various companies with business pending before the administration. From the beginning, Rossotti sought to keep his stock. At his 1997 Senate Finance Committee confirmation hearing, he promised that he would divest his AMS holdings if the company bid on any IRS work during his tenure. He also promised to recuse himself from any decisions involving existing AMS contracts with the agency. Rossotti said then that he wanted to make sure ``no one believes, at this stage in my life, that I have taken this job in order to further any particular personal interest of my own.'' Officials involved in last December's waiver said it didn't violate the letter or spirit of Rossotti's pledge. Rossotti's input had not been sought, they said, directly for AMS work but for the design of a separate system, known as the Custodial Accounting Project, that involves taxpayer account data. Because the project would have an interface with the AMS system, AMS probably would be involved in working out links or problems between the two. Rossotti may have to seek additional waivers as the IRS continues a major, long-term computer modernization project. AMS would be a likely bidder on some of this work, which would again bring into focus his commitment to sell his stock. Judicial Watch, a conservative legal watchdog group, has asked a federal judge to order the IRS to turn over documents related to Rossotti's ethics waiver, AMS contracts and the new accounting project.

It is almost too small to see, it is clear (Thin Layer Film VLIC), and when it is touched to most things, it sticks via a variable static charge. Once it is attached/touched to a phone, it uses the phone's electronics to transmit *audio* thru the phone lines. Soon after the installation, a simple call to that phone activates it. Even when the bugged phone is hung-up and/or used again, the first caller after its attachment can hear EVERYTHING (i.e., as long as they don't hang up after their initial activation call). This thing will keep gaining-up until it finds a human audio signal, even if it's several offices AWAY from the bugged phone! In other words, it can hear/transmit what is being said on that phone, as well as what is going on in rooms FAR removed from the room with the chip. At night, for example, when things are quiet, all of the rooms near the room with the bugged phone may be empty of ppl. In these cases, USABLE audio can be received and transmitted from the nearest rooms that *DO* have conversations (i.e., in the ~one KHz range), EVEN ON NON-ADJACENT FLOORS! It just keeps gaining up, while filtering out expected interferences (e.g., RF noise, fan blowers, etc.) UNTIL IT FINDS A HUMAN CONVERSATION! When the first caller calls the bugged phone (i.e., the first caller after the initial attachment of the Infinity bug to a phone), even tho the phone with the bug has been hung up, as long as the first caller doesn't hang up, they have a continuing flow of the nearest audio to the bugged phone. I imagine that when/if the first caller hangs up, the very next caller to that phone will activate the Infinity chip again, so that if this new caller did not hang up after the bugged phone is answered and hung up (the caller could just say they had a wrong number), this second caller could hold the line open and actively transmitting audio until they hung up at their own end. Maureen Reagan, the outspoken daughter of former President Ronald
Reagan who was often at odds with her father's policies, died
yesterday at her home in Sacramento. She was 60, and had suffered a
recurrence of melanoma, a skin cancer with which she was first
diagnosed in 1996 and that, after some years in remission, recurred
last fall.
Ms. Reagan was a politically active feminist who worked to support
the proposed equal rights amendment, lobbied for abortion rights
and helped elect women to public office.
She had a distant relationship with her father for decades after he
and her mother, the actress Jane Wyman, divorced in 1948.
Although Ms. Reagan volunteered her services in 1966 when her
father ran for governor of California, his consultants rejected her
offer on the ground that her participation would again bring Mr.
Reagan's divorce to the attention of the public. She recalled a
news release at the time that said Mr. Reagan and his wife Nancy,
whom he married in 1952, had had two children, Patti and Ronnie,
and did not mention her or her brother Michael.
A thaw between father and daughter began when Mr. Reagan ran for
president in 1980.

life,'' her friend Judy Carter, the daughter-in-law of former
President Jimmy Carter, said in 1989.
Ms. Reagan, too, tried her hand at politics. She was twice
defeated in Republican primary races in California, for the United
States Senate in 1982 and for a Southern California Congressional
seat in 1992. Her first campaign was undermined by reports that her
father, then president, did not want her involved in the race, but
a decade later he endorsed her Congressional run.
To accusations that she was trading on the Reagan name, she said,
``I don't run because of my name but I don't run from it.'' She
noted that people who accused her of exploiting family ties
``forget I was a Republican before the president was.''
``I licked my first envelope in 1960,'' Ms. Reagan said, ``and I've
never stopped working.''
She said that as an 11-year-old watching television coverage of the
1952 presidential conventions, she preferred the Republicans
``because they were better organized.''
At an even younger age, she exhibited the traits for which she was
known throughout her life: strong will and impatience. As one of
her critics once said, she was ``simply not schooled in the ways of
holding her tongue.''
In 1987, after the Iran-contra affair, when Ms. Reagan asserted
that Lt. Col. Oliver L. North and Vice Adm. John M. Poindexter,
President Reagan's national security aides, should be
court-martialed for their actions, Mr. Reagan told Republican
leaders, ''I gave up arguing with my daughter long ago.''
Maureen Elizabeth Reagan was born on Jan. 4, 1941, and in her early
school years attended the Chadwick School in Palos Verdes Estates,
Calif., as a boarder. She went to Emerson Junior High School in Los
Angeles and to high school at Immaculate Heart in Hollywood. After
a year at Marymount College of Virginia in Arlington she dropped
out because, she said, ''I wanted to do something, be somewhere, I
wanted to be an actress, and to be one, you had to know something
of the world.''
When she left school, her father told her, ''Well, write if you get
work.''
The work she got was as a secretary in Washington, where she also
took part in local theater. She soon returned to the West, to Las
Vegas and California, where she sang in nightclubs, did a few
commercials (Duncan Hines and Crisco) and had bit parts in
television shows (''The Partridge Family'' and ``Marcus Welby,
M.D.'') and in the 1964 Elvis Presley movie ``Kissin' Cousins.'' In
her 1989 book, ``First Father, First Daughter,'' (Little, Brown
Company), Ms. Reagan recalled, ``I went out on so many auditions I
began to think of changing my middle name to Rejection.''
Her brief television and movie career was followed by a stint as a
talk show host on KABC Radio in Los Angeles, and in 1969 she joined
a U.S.O. tour of Vietnam.
By 1980, Ms. Reagan was director of an organization called Sell
Overseas America, which promoted American products abroad, a
position she resigned two years later to pursue her Senate
campaign.
Ms. Reagan's book revealed that she had been the victim of domestic
violence in her first marriage, in 1960, to John Filippone, a
Washington policeman. The marriage lasted barely a year. A 1964
marriage to David Sills, a Marine lieutenant, ended in divorce in
1968.
Her husband of 20 years, Dennis Revell, a public relations
executive in Sacramento, survives her as does a daughter, Rita,
whom the couple adopted from Uganda in 1994. In addition to her
father, stepmother and siblings, she is also survived by her
mother.
Although she was an ardent Republican, Ms. Reagan angered many

-Caveat Lector- When Druze and Christians get friendly, Syria gets worried By Zvi Barel Ha'aretz 9 August 2001 The arrest of some 200 Christians in Lebanon Tuesday made the editor of a Nahar, Jubrein Tuwani, publish an unprecedentedly harsh editorial against the Lebanese government and its masters in Damascus. Have we gone from a government to military rule? Is this a military junta? If the government claims there was a revolutionary conspiracy, then we are all revolutionaries and all conspirators. Tuwani's anger, and that of the Maronite and Druze communities is the result of a lightning operation by the Lebanese army two days after the historic reconciliation between the Druze and Christian leaderships, whose conflict two decades ago was a key reason for the Lebanese civil war. Over the weekend, Maronite Patriarch Nasrallah Sfeir visited Druze leader Walid Jumblatt at Jumblatt's headquarters in the Chouf mountains. The visit, with its conciliatory speeches, in effect made pubic a renewed alliance between the two groups, which share a common interest - the departure of the Syrians. The only difference between the two are in nuances. Sfeir wants the Syrians out without any preconditions, while Jumblatt is prepared to be a little more flexible. Such a meeting between two leaders of separate groups in the country is always going to raise suspicions in Damascus, which fears the revival of a large Christian-Druze bloc that won't make do with Syrian army redeployments but will demand a full Syrian departure from Lebanon. We won't allow any harm to public order or good relations with any sister country, said Adnan Adoum, the Lebanese general prosecutor, explaining the arrests of the Christians. But his own words were enough to understand where the orders for the arrests came from. Many of those arrested (and most, as expected, have now been released) are loyalists of General Michel Aoun, the leader of the Free Patriotic Movement, which has been fighting the Syrian presence in Lebanon since the end of the civil war, and of Samir Geagea, head of the Lebanese Forces, in jail serving four life sentences for political assassinations during the civil war. According to Lebanese sources, the order for the arrests came from the Syrian intelligence chief in Lebanon, Razi Cana'an, who wanted to impress upon the Lebanese Syria's red lines concerning Lebanese opposition to the Syrian occupation. Those sources say that Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri was also opposed to the arrests and told Syrian officials that the arrests could serve to consolidate an anti-Syrian protest movement, turning the Druze-Christian reconciliation into a political union. And it's not only the Syrians who fear such an alliance. Lebanese Muslims might regard such an alliance as a threat, and that could yet turn into a confrontation between the Muslims on one side and the Christian-Druze alliance on the other. Peter Gumpel - accusing the Jewish members of a Jewish-Catholic historical commission investigating Pius XII's activities during the Holocaust of clearly incorrect behavior. Gumpel charged that they have helped mount a slanderous campaign against the Catholic church. Seymour Reich, who heads the International Jewish Committee for Inter-religious Relations, which worked with the Vatican to appoint the commission, reacted angrily to Gumpel's letter. These are very serious accusations, said Reich. We are astonished and frustrated by the fact that Father Gumpel chose to attack the historians and particularly to single out the Jewish scholars on the team. Gumpel, in charge of providing answers to a bi-religious commission of historians investigating Vatican actions during the Holocaust, is working on plans to beatify Pius XII. The commission members, Jewish and Catholic alike, suspended their work three weeks ago because the Vatican has not released all of its World War II-era archives. Gumpel defended Pius' action in the letter, saying material made available to the historians showed that Pius made every possible effort to save as many lives as possible, without any distinction. We hope and assume that Father Gumpel does not express the official views of the Vatican, said Reich. The historians, who were appointed by the Vatican and Reich's group in 1999 to examine Pius' actions, released a preliminary report in October. They described a pope bent on fruitless diplomacy as reports of atrocities poured into the Vatican. The historians said at the time that questions still needed to be answered before they could issue a final report. They expressed hope that the Vatican would open up the archives of the Holy See's correspondences to fill in the gaps in the 12 volumes of wartime documents provided by the Vatican. Gumpel said, however, he had met with the group and answered some of their questions and offered to answer the rest at another session, but that this was ignored. It was therefore disconcerting, he said, that in the following months some Jewish members in the group had systematically affirmed that they never received answers to their questions. Reich accused Gumpel yesterday of prevarication, saying that he had met with the commission only once, gave it limited time, and refused a second meeting. Israeli police sources said a Palestinian with explosives strapped to his body blew himself up at a Pizza restaurant on the King George St. in downtown West Jerusalem. Hospital sources said eight people were killed in the blast, including the Palestinian. Among the estimated sixty people injured in the blast, ten people reportedly sustained serious wounds. The blast destroyed the restaurant and shattered glass in a 50 meter-radius. The Islamic Jihad organization reportedly took credit for the blast in an anonymous call wit AFP in Amman. And in the first reaction of an Israeli official to the incident, the Jewish mayor of Jerusalem Ehud Olmert admitted that Israel was unable to stop suicidal bomb attacks. Olmert, who was speaking on the Israeli state-run radio, urged Israelis to come to terms with the fact that civilians are killed in war time. He said the Zionist regime can reduce but not completely eradicate Palestinian guerilla operations. The Jerusalem blast is believed to be a retaliation for the recent spate of assassinations of Palestinian political leaders by the Israeli occupation army. The latest assassination or targeted killing of Palestinians by the Israeli army took place on 31 July when Israeli apache helicopters fired several missiles at a building in downtown Nablus housing a media office affiliated to the Islamic Resistance Movement, Hamas. Interesting item but considering Hilliary took $600,000 and Clintons brothers and Hilliary's family took money which amounted to bribes for presidential pardons, etc., where does line between bribery and pardon and racketeering begin and end? Justice is not for sale - but I wonder, about equal protection of the laws where a poor guy in prison must sit a lifetime while a rich man goes free and I do not think this was the intent of the use of Presidential pardons. Half that Congress is on the take and we might as well toss in the rest of the mutual admiration society, the Senate. A: Section II, Article 2 of the Constitution says the president shall have the power to grant reprieves and pardons for offenses against the United States, except in cases of impeachment. Q: Are there any limits on the president's power? A: Presidents can pardon anyone for any crime that would have been heard in federal court. In fact, granting pardons is the president's only absolute power. Q: What were the framers of the Constitution thinking? A: They brought the concept with them from England, which adapted the idea from Roman tradition. The earliest royal pardons were granted in the 7th century. Interesting analysis flw MEDIUM RARE By Jim Rarey August 9, 2001 CONDIT: THE CIRCLING OF THE WAGONS For fans of western movies, the phrase "circling the wagons" immediately evokes an image of pioneers with their Canastota Clippers forming a circle to repel an attack, usually by Indians. In media parlance today, the overworked phrase most often is used to describe supporters of politicians rallying to the defense of their beleaguered friend or meal ticket from the attacks of the media. Supporters of Gary Condit are being compared to the circling of the wagons as they castigate the media for its concentrated coverage of Condit, claiming "its only about sex" and why cant they leave the congressman alone. Even a few in the media are taking this line. This writer also believes the media is missing the mark, but for a different reason. Even most of Condits supporters decry his sexual escapades. The analogy is more like a bunch of forest rangers encircling a small brush fire, to keep it from becoming a raging inferno, with the intention of letting it burn itself out. Most observers agree the Condits political career is over, particularly if some of the rumors about his bizarre sexual appetites prove true. If that is true, then what "raging inferno" is lurking out there" Most people believe the missing (former) intern, Chandra Levy, who was having an affair with Condit, has been a victim of foul play. From the polls, a majority also believes that Condit was somehow involved although there is no proof as the congressman and his staff continue to stonewall the authorities. All can agree that Condits behavior makes it look like he is hiding guilt about something. As this writer has opined in earlier articles, the reason for Chandras disappearance and probable death may have nothing to do with her affair with Condit. Chandra could have found or stumbled onto information that made her dangerous to powerful people. The most likely subject on which she would have that dangerous knowledge is her assignment at the Bureau of Prisons shortly before her disappearance. Chandra was working with the media making arrangements for press conferences and the possible viewing of the execution of Timothy McVeigh. Simultaneously, she was responsible for preparing daily news summaries for the bureau staff. As a matter of course, Chandra was surfing the web for references to subjects of interest to the bureau. She also had access to and was searching bureau records, presumably in conjunction with information found on the Internet. We do not know what level of security clearance Chandra had and whether or not she had access to other records of the Department of Justice, of which the Bureau of Prisons is a part. One of the stories circulating on the web at that time was the connection between McVeigh and Dr. Louis Jolyn West, a CIA mind control expert. West was alleged to have made up to 17 visits to McVeigh in prison. By doing a web search on McVeighs name, as Chandra most likely did, this writer found some very interesting "coincidences." According to mind control researcher David Hoffman, in 1946 Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory was founded including the "Fund for the Study of Human Ecology." The "fund" was a CIA financing conduit for mind control experiments by émigré Nazi scientists and others under the direction of CIA doctors Sidney Gotttlieb, Ewen Cameron and the same Louis Jolyn West. Gottlieb, of course was the director of the CIAs infamous MK-ULTRA mind control program. Cornell was later absorbed into Calspan Advanced Technology Center in Buffalo, NY. The company continued experiments in mind control and artificial intelligence. In 1997 Calspan was in turn absorbed by Virigian Corp. Virigians website gives no information as to its management or ownership but is deeply involved in artificial intelligence. Here is the strange "coincidence." After McVeigh left the army, he joined the Army National Guard in Buffalo. He landed a job with Burns International Security and was assigned to guard the premises of (you guessed it) Calspan. McVeigh had told friends the army had implanted a microchip in him during the Gulf war. (We now know that a number of soldiers were implanted with microchips explained as an experiment to keep track of their locations during battle.) The CIA doctors at Calspan were experimenting with merging brain cells with microchips. Could this be the "McVeigh connection" that Chandra uncovered? Back to the circling of the wagons. Another strange coincidence is the rehabilitation of Terry Lenzner, private investigator extraordinary. Lenzner gained notoriety as the major party investigating Clinton opponents (euphemistically called "opposition research") for dirt to discredit them. Lenzner has appeared on several panels on Cable TV shows as well as a couple of the Sunday network shows as an expert on investigations (which he no doubt is). What the public

August 5 2001 WASHINGTON -- The view from the White House, not to mention much of Capitol Hill, is idyllic. True, there are a few blotches on the landscape--a queasy stock market and what conservatives see as a long-running deterioration of America's core moral values. But other than that, what's to complain? Americans are gratefully cashing in their tax rebates to redo the kitchen counters or pay off some credit card bills. Welfare reform has been declared a universal success, with over 60% of former recipients making their own way in the job market. Unemployment is yesterday's problem, and the official poverty rate has reached a comfortingly low 12%. But look more closely and the scenery appears a whole lot less pleasant. On July 24, the Washington D.C.-based Economic Policy Institute (EPI) released a report showing that 29% of American families with young children--precisely the sort of families that policymakers say they are most concerned about--do not earn enough to live at any acceptable level of comfort and security. The EPI researchers got to this appallingly high number by calculating the basic--make that very basic--budget a family needs to live on. They figured in essentials like housing, food, clothing, health insurance, transportation, childcare and utilities, but no meals out, vacations, movies, cigarettes, beer or other routine middle-class indulgences. And even then, they found that nearly a third of American families can't make ends meet. Things the more affluent take for granted--like Internet access, video rentals and saving for retirement--are almost impossible luxuries. But they get by, don't they? Not exactly. EPI researchers looked carefully at data on families who earn less than the basic budget, which amounts to $33,511 for a family of four. More than 70% of these families worry about food, sometimes miss rent payments or have to rely on an emergency room for their medical care. Nearly 30% report facing far more dire hardships: having to miss meals, foregoing needed medical care, being evicted from their housing. In a purely selfish way, I'm relieved by all this statistical bad news: At least it wasn't just me. While researching my recent book, Nickel and Dimed: On (Not) Getting By in America, I spent a total of three months, in three different cities, attempting to support myself on the wages I could earn as an entry-level worker--as a waitress, a hotel housekeeper, a maid with a housecleaning service, a nursing home aide and a Wal-Mart floor clerk. I found that I could not make ends meet, not with one job anyway. I averaged $7 an hour, an amount which fell tragically short of my bare-bone expenses--gas, food and, above all, rent. My coworkers had various strategies for coping. Many of them, of course, shared expenses with another breadwinner--a husband, boyfriend or grown child. A surprisingly high number worked more than one job--typically an 8-hour shift followed by a 6-hour one--an arrangement that is utterly destructive to family life as well as health and stamina. Most passed on company health insurance, simply because they couldn't afford to pay the employee contribution, which was often well over $100 a month. Possibly some of them received help from the government in the form of food stamps or the earned income tax credit, although I never once heard these programs mentioned. Some of my co-workers were clearly not coping. I worked alongside people who turned out to be homeless, although in the peculiar hierarchy of poverty, they didn't consider themselves homeless as long as they had a van or a car to sleep in. Others were not getting enough to eat, and not, as I first imagined, because they were dieting. Lunch, in low-wage America, can mean a small-size bag of Doritos or a few hot dog rolls. What my experience shows anecdotally, and the EPI's Hardships in America report shows far more systematically, is that we've been fooling ourselves with the official poverty level, now pegged at $17,463 for a family of four. That number is still calculated by the archaic method of taking the bare-bones cost of food for a family of a given size and multiplying this number by three. Yet food is relatively inflation-proof, at least compared to medical care and housing costs. Rents especially have gone through the roof: I found a half-size trailer renting in Florida for $625 a month, a room in a genuinely creepy Minneapolis residential motel for $250 a week. There's another reason for our leaders' inability to see the true extent of economic misery in America. They're used to thinking of poverty as a consequence of unemployment. Hence, for example,

Today the police from the city Holstebro in Jutland presented evidence in court, that was provided after breaking the encryption on five out of sixteen computers that where seized april 25 this year. All 16 computers were protected with Safeguard Easy from the german encryption provider Utimaco. It is not known whether DES, 128-bit IDEA, Blowfish or Stealth was used as algorithm on the computers. All four algorithms are built in Safeguard Easy. Details are sparse. It is not known how the encryption was broken, whether it was brute forced or flaws in the program was exploited. The computers where seized from the humanitarian (leftwing) foundation Tvind (Humana) in connection with a case about tax evation. Among the evidence provided from the encrypted computers were emails sent among the leaders of the foundation, Poul Jorgensen and Mogens Amdi Petersen describing transfers of large sums of money. Apparantly, but not confirmed, british Scotland Yard has been involved in breaking the encryption. The danish police doesn't have the capacity to break encryption by themselves. Neither has the danish civilian intelligence service. Routine is that cases concerning encryption is handed over to the danish defence intelligence service DDIS. This procedure has been described earlier this year by the danish minister of justice in connection with another case. DDIS denies involvement with the Tvind case. Employees and leaders at Tvind has denied handing over their passwords to the computers. One even wrote a public letter mocking the chief of police in Holstebro, describing how he changed his password weekly, and stating that he'd probably even forgotten his password by now. THE HISTORY STRUCTURE OF WAR RISKS COVER Understanding the structure of modern war risks cover may be assisted by an appreciation of the history of the London insurance market, a market which owes its most famous name and much of its shape to the consumption of coffee. *** In 1711, faced with serious National Debt problems, the government established a company, the South Sea Company, to exploit a trading monopoly conferred by charter in return for taking over #156;9 million of the debt. Holders of government securities could exchange them for shares in the company, which would receive reduced interest from the Treasury. The shareholders would, however, benefit from an assuredly and increasingly profitable investment in the South Sea Company. The flaw was that the company's trading monopolies in reality were of little if any value, consisting of dealings in inwrought iron with Spanish subjects, some vague fishing rights and trade with Spanish South America, trade which never blossomed. By way of comparison, one commentator has postulated a company floated in London in 1943 to develop British trade with Japan, to buy and sell base metals with Germany, and to run a fleet of trawlers to Iceland. Between 1711 and 1720, when the company took over another 31 million of the National Debt, every speculator's trick was employed to maintain the apparent buoyancy of South Sea Company stock. By hook and principally by crook, its 100 stock rose to a height of 1000. But the government sponsored gambling on South Sea stock spread: A perfect rage for speculation seized the entire country: fraudulent companies of every conceivable description were floated, and however absurd their ostensible purpose, they found people willing to invest in them ... The crowning imposition of all ... was a scheme for carrying on an undertaking of great advantage, but nobody to know what it is. The ingenious deviser of this idea asked for a capital of half a million, and provided that every investor paying down two guineas per cent was to have 100 per annum for every 100 so subscribed. The institution of proceedings against companies with a view to forfeiture of their obsolete charters, combined with the adverse publicity engendered by the passing of the Bubble Act, triggered a stock market crash of unprecedented devastation in September 1720. In the course of that month, shares in the South Sea Company itself fell from 780 to 180 per cent. Although the company was too entwined with the nation's finances to be permitted to fail totally, it never regained public confidence. It dragged out a struggling existence till 1807; and the faded splendours of its South Sea House survived long enough to secure immortality in the Essays of Elia. Throughout the eighteenth century and beyond the shadow of 1720 retarded the development of incorporated companies. New charters and authorising Acts of Parliament for any type of company were few and far between. But the Bubble Act itself had a more direct impact upon the evolution of the marine insurance industry. The now 64 year old Hungarian with a U.S. passport is the
superstar amidst the great speculators. When the last "Forbes" list of the
best paid managers and financiers was published, Soros was in the lead by a
huge margin. In the last year he earned 550 million US$, twenty times as much as
the Disney Boss. When Soros opens the hunt, the international money markets
get moving and the reserve banks start worrying. In Sept. 1993 he succeeded
over the Bank of England. He was certain the Bank would have to take the
pound that came under pressure out of the European exchange mechanism
and devalue it. He gambled 10 Billion US$ --with success. He made 1 Billion
US$, which the British taxpayers now have to come up with. He himself likes
to be openly known as the man who wants to influence the big money markets
of the world. This is a very unusual stance for an investor to take, who
should rather be interested in using situations unobservantly that the
competitors have not yet discovered. In March 1993, Soros' activities became
known when he predicted a rise in the price of gold. It is assumed --since
this started a buying spree in precious metals --that this drove the price
up 20% over the highest price since the Gulf War. In the beginning of June
1993, he wrote an open letter to the business editor of the London Times,
Anatole Kaletsky, announcing that he intented to urge the money markets to
sell large amounts of German government bonds in favor of French stocks.
Which means: Down with the German mark and attack on the Bundesbank!
In several newspapers across the world Soros is praised
as a kind of "Robin Hood of the Computer Age", since by speculation he takes
from the rich nations in grand style to hand out to Eastern Europe and
Russia via several Soros Foundations, to prepare the way for "Democracy" in
those "poor" countries that had been bled dry by communism.
Who then is Soros? The official story says that he was
born in 1930 to Jewish parents and as a teenager had been chased from
Budapest by the Nazis. He enrolled at the "London School of Economics" and
in the mid-50's came to the U.S. There he was magically drawn to Wall Street,
but his career until 1969 was unspectacular. Then with a partner he took
over an investment fund. He sold stocks he didn't own as futures, hoping
that their price would fall nearer the qualifying date and that he could
aquire them at a price lower than his selling price. From
this fund the "Quantum Group" evolved, a family of investment funds operating
from the Dutch West Indies. Quantum is one of the most impressive
"investment machines" in the world. In 8 of the last 24 years it made an
"official" profit of over 50%, in 2 of those years even over 100%. In the
meantime Soros handed business over to a group of managers and limits himself to
designing the "great campaigns". He put down his princples in the book, "The
Alchemy of Finance", where he says what "financial speculators think more
important than real economic facts". But this is but the
picture the media -- and we know who owns them --paint of him. Who is he in
reality? William Engdahl knows this to say about him:
"Soros speculates on the world's financial markets via
his secret off-shore company, "Quantum Fund NV", a private "investment fund"
that handles a portfolio of 4 to 7 Billion US$ for several "clients". The
Quantum Fund is registered in the tax haven of the Netherland Antilles in the
Caribbean. In order to evade control of his financial activities by the U.S.
administration not a single U.S. citizen sits on the board of Quantum. It's
directors are a curious mixture of Swiss and Italian financiers...
Soros has been identified as a front man of the
Anglo-French Rothschild banking group. Understandably neither he nor the
Rothschilds want this important fact to be public, so the tight links to his
friends in the London "City", in the British foreign ministry, in the state of
Israel and to his mighty friends in the American establishment would stay

-Caveat Lector- United States Citizen Reported Missing in the West Bank The ADC Legal Department calls upon the United States Department of State to take the necessary steps in protecting the legally guaranteed rights of Adnan Ali, an American citizen reported missing. Adnan Ali, a 29-year-old American citizen of Palestinian descent, is a resident of Belle Glade, Florida where he owns and operates a convenience store. He and his siblings came to the United States at a very young age and became American citizens in the mid 1980's. Three weeks ago, Adnan and his wife went to Deir Dibwan (near Ramallah) to attend a family wedding. On August 1, his family reported him missing when he failed to arrive at the home of an American friend whom he was going to visit. His family found his car abandoned on a road near the Israeli settlement of Ofrah. Reports confirm there was no sign of struggle, but there was evidence that the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) had examined the car because they left the blue tape used to indicate that the car had been searched for explosives. Furthermore, an eye-witness from a neighboring village came forward to tell the family that he was behind Adnan in traffic when two IDF jeeps pulled Adnan over, examined the car, and threw him in the jeep. When Adan's brother, Akif, contacted the American Consulate General, he was told that there was nothing they could do but wait. According to Akif, on Friday, August 3, he called the American Consulate again and learned from the duty officer, Elizabeth Sally, that they had a report that the IDF had detained Adnan. However, three days later, the Consulate denied this report claiming that it was a rumor. The ADC Legal Department has contacted the State Department regarding Adnan and is also working closely with Partners for Peace, an organization that has worked extensively on cases of human rights abuses by Israel against American citizens of Arab origin. Both ADC and Partners for Peace have contacted Kim Richer, the Overseas American Citizens Services Officer for Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, who has stated that the State Department in conjunction with the American Embassy in Tel Aviv and the American Consulate in Jerusalem have been doing everything they can to locate Adnan. However, the State Department is unwilling to issue an official letter of protest to the Israeli government, a common practice in a situation such as this one. The Department of State has an obligation to take the necessary steps to protect the rights of American citizens wherever they may be. The ADC Legal Department urges attorneys, law students, and all those who advocate justice to contact the State Department and demand that the State Department file an official protest and investigate further. In a March 19 speech to a prominent pro-Israel group, Rep. Tom Lantos (D-Calif.) said Yasser Arafat walked away from a dream deal at Camp David in July 2000. Apparently, [Arafat's] approach to the peace process was based on the Treaty of 628 at Hudaibiyah, which was a treacherous treaty, Lantos told members of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee. Islamic forces made truce with non-Islamic elements, and they had no intention of keeping that agreement. They went on to attack, and destroyed those with whom they had made the treaty, he said. However, the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), a prominent American Muslim group, took strong issue with Lantos' remarks. There is not one shred of evidence to back up this false allegation, CAIR Executive Director Nihad Awad said in a letter to Lantos. Muhammad and his companions made the agreement with pagan Arabs at Hudaibiyah in 628 A.D. so they would be allowed to make their pilgrimage to Mecca, Awad said, citing established historians. Two years later, the pagan Arabs broke the treaty by attacking and killing 20 of the Muslims, he said. It is internationally recognized that when one party breaks a treaty, the other party is released from its obligations, Awad said. Even after the attack, no revenge was taken against those who broke the treaty, Ahmad said. In fact, when the Muslims finally entered Mecca, amnesty was granted to nearly all former enemies, he said. Lantos' remarks defamed the Islamic faith, said Omar Ahmad, chairman of CAIR. This demonstrably false smear on the Prophet Muhammad's reputation is a common 'talking point' promoted by the pro-Israel lobby as justification for that state's brutal and racist policies, he said. Lantos, a long-time crusader for human rights worldwide and a founding co-chair of the Congressional Human Rights Caucus, said in an Aug. 3 reply that he intended no offense to Muslim believers nor any defamation of the Prophet Muhammad. His concern was not centered on the treaty as such, he said, but with Arafat's interpretation of it. Mr. Arafat has repeatedly invoked the Treaty of Hudaibiyah in order to justify to religious Muslim audiences his signing of the Oslo agreement, which required his recognition of the state of Israel, Lantos said. The clear inference has been that he is not forsaking the goal of conquest of all historic Palestine, rather that he is merely accepting a truce so as to be better positioned to achieve that goal, he added. Some saw political motives behind CAIR's letter of protest. I think it has less to do with the speech than it does with Mr. Lantos' concerns about the upcoming conference on racism in South Africa, said a source in the House International Relations Committee, of which Lantos is the ranking Democrat. Now they've suddenly found his speech and decided five months later that he was attacking Islam. That's certainly not what was done, the source said. But CAIR said Tuesday that Lantos' response came only after hundreds of Muslims called, faxed and e-mailed his office to express outrage at his remarks. While Representative Lantos says he had no intent to defame the Prophet Muhammad, he does not clearly retract his false allegation that the Prophet's actions were 'treacherous,' Awad said. Awad also criticized representatives of the pro-Israel lobby for continuing to promote what he called this slur against the Prophet Muhammad as an anti-Muslim 'talking point.' -Caveat Lector- All I can say is: convenient... ÿÿ Witness against Skakel overdoses ASSOCIATED PRESS Aug. 9 - GREENWICH -- A key witness in the murder case against Kennedy nephew Michael Skakel died Tuesday in Rochester, N.Y., of an apparent drug overdose, police said Wednesday. Gregory Coleman, who attended a substance abuse program in Maine with Skakel was found dead Tuesday morning in the driveway of a home, said Rochester Police Lt. Jeff Clark. Coleman testified that Skakel once told him: I'm gonna get away with murder. I'm a Kennedy. But Coleman, 39, also admitted during a hearing in April that he was under the influence of heroin when he testified before a one-judge grand jury. Fairfield State's Attorney Jonathan Benedict said he would still prosecute the case without batting an eyelash. He said he would submit for evidence a transcript of Coleman's testimony from pretrial hearings. It is a tragedy. He was an engaging individual, Benedict said. The state had been expected to rely heavily on Coleman's testimony that Skakel admitted killing 15-year-old Martha Moxley in 1975. Dorthy Moxley, Martha's mother, said there are other witnesses -- some of them only recently located -- who can support Coleman's allegation that Skakel confessed. I thought he was close to a hero for coming forward, Dorthy Moxley said of Coleman. I don't think it mattered if he was on drugs. Skakel, 40, is the son of Rushton Skakel, the brother of Robert F. Kennedy's widow, Ethel. Clark said Coleman was the sixth of seven area drug addicts to die under similar circumstances in the last week. We believe they may be related, he said. We are looking at it as a possible drug overdose. We don't have any evidence to suggest the drugs are tainted right now. That's going to take toxicology tests to determine. Skakel's defense lawyer, Michael Sherman, called the death not terribly surprising. He said Skakel, who has had his own struggles with addiction, looks upon Coleman's death as a very sad event. Prosecutors could not immediately be reached for comment Wednesday evening. Phone calls to the home of Fairfield County State's Attorney Jonathan Benedict went unanswered. The state had been expected to rely heavily on Coleman's testimony that Skakel admitted killing 15-year-old Martha Moxley in 1975. Moxley was beaten to death with a golf club that matched a set owned by the Skakels, who lived nearby in the exclusive Belle Haven neighborhood of Greenwich. Skakel was also 15 at the time. Several years later, Coleman and Skakel were classmates at the Elan School in Poland Spring, Maine. Coleman and another former student have testified in pretrial proceedings that Skakel admitted killing Moxley the night of Oct. 30, 1975. No arrests were made for more than 24 years. Skakel was charged in the killing in January 2000 and later arraigned as a juvenile. A juvenile court judge ruled in January that Skakel should be tried as an adult and found that reasonable cause existed to try Skakel. A second hearing was required after the case was transferred to adult court. It was during that proceeding that Coleman stunned the courtroom by admitting he had been high when he testified to the grand jury. Sherman had asked Coleman why he told the grand jury Skakel discussed the murder five or six times but later said it was only one or two times. I was on drugs when I came before the grand jury, Coleman answered. Coleman also testified that he used crack cocaine and heroin before a television interview on the case in Rochester. Are you on drugs now? Sherman asked. No, Coleman replied. Give me a urine test, he added. No thanks, Sherman said, drawing laughter from the courtroom but a reprimand from the judge. Coleman went on to describe his own life filled with alcoholism, drug addiction, a criminal record and homelessness, at times living under a bridge. Another former classmate, John Higgins, testified that Skakel told him of the killing during a tearful confession on the front porch of a dormitory while the two served as night guards. He related to me at some point prior to being there, there was a murder and that he was somehow involved in it, Higgins said. He described a drawn-out confession in which Skakel initially said he did not know if he committed the murder. He eventually stated that I must have done it' and eventually stated I did it,' Higgins said. But Higgins admitted he lied to investigators when they first asked him about the alleged confession. He also admitted asking about a $50,000 reward in the case. Two other Elan students testified for the defense that they never heard Skakel confess. Famed prosecutor and writer Vincent Bugliosi blasted the Bush v Gore ruling, calling it the worst crime in U.S. history - in effect, the theft of the Presidency. The talk was part of promotional tour for his book, The Betrayal of America, in which he charges that (in)Justices Rehnquist, Scalia, Thomas, O'Connor, and Kennedy betrayed everything they ever believed in to take the election away from the American people and into their own hands based on an inapplicable constitutional principle. I will stake my prosecutorial reputation on the fact that within the pages of this book I prove beyond reasonable doubt that these five Justices deliberately set out to hand the election to George Bush, Bugliosi says. The evidence against them is absolutely overwhelming. Like typical criminals on the run, they left their dirty fingerprints everywhere. These formidable charges, involving a ruling that changed the course of history, made by a nationally respected prosecutor, and in front of a full and vociferous house, unfolded with virtually no media coverage. This omission is in keeping with the media's move-on-the-election-is-over mentality, which Bugliosi likened to Nazi war criminals saying 'the war is over. Let's get on with our lives.' Bugliosi announced during the talk that Congressman John Conyers of Michigan asked that None Dare Call It Treasonthe article on which Betrayal of America was based, be entered into the Congressional record, thus bringing the charges against the felonious five, as Bugliosi calls them, into the permanent annals of Congress. Bugliosi praised those in the audience who by supporting his cause are finding themselves in the front lines, in the trenches, fighting a noble war and added, I salute you for it. He also asked the audience to help get his message out. He said that in his long and successful career he never had so much trouble getting invited to speak on the air as he does now, even though his book has been on the New York Times bestseller list for weeks. The stage for Bugliosi's talk was set by a few other speakers, who largely reinforced his message while adding their own take and call to action. Medea Benjamin of Global Exchange discussed her role as observer of the vote recount in Florida last December. She described shocking accounts of delaying tactics used by the Republicans to run out the clock on Al Gore, and cases of African American voters turned away from the polls because they could not produce two pieces of identification. Another powerful plea was made by Riva Enteen, vice president of the National Lawyers Guild (NLG), which is considering using Bugliosi's book as a legal foundation for asking the House to initiate impeachment proceedings against the Supreme Court Justices. Enteen said that the NLG has been receiving some 100 responses a day since their call for support went out, including an inquiry from the AFL-CIO. What has changed in the last couple of months is not whether there will be an impeachment campaign, she said. There IS an impeachment campaigning going on. It is only the role that the National Lawyers Guild will play in it. She asked everyone to join her and the NLG in going after these five despicable traitors. Bugliosi followed, and like the passionate, skilled and persuasive prosecutor that he is, laid out his convincing case: that the Bush v. Gore ruling was not based on the law, meaning that the court knowingly and deliberately nullified the votes of 51 million and stole the election for George Bush. He concluded nothing could possibly be more serious in its enormous ramifications. It was the biggest and most serious crime in American history. And in a fair and just world, the five Justices responsible for that decision belong behind prison bars. Bugliosi made his case point by point as if his audience was a jury. 1. The Justices in effect confessed to the crime, he said, by stating in the decision that the ruling only pertains to Bush v. Gore, not to other cases. This is the first time in the 210-year history of the court that the court limited its ruling to the case before it, Bugliosi said. If that ruling was based on the law, there's no way under the moon why they would have said it does not apply to other cases. He quoted Scalia writing in 1996 that the Supreme Court of the United States does not sit to announce unique dispositions. Its principal function is to establish legal precedent, to set forth principles of law that every court in America must follow. But not apparently in Bush v.

BBN Technologies, a division of Verizon, has designed a sniper-detection device that will allow soldiers to track the direction of a bullet back to a hidden enemy, which can then be transmitted to a Global Positioning System. The new battlefield technology will use microphones and a helmet-mounted compass, and the device can also be mounted on trucks, airplanes, streetlights, and buildings. BBN's technology tracks snipers at long distance by picking up the acoustic vibrations from the muzzle blast and the supersonic crack of the bullet. The technology is also able to detect the trajectory, caliber, and speed of the bullet. In an age of public relations, how one is portrayed can be every bit as important as the substance of one's actions. Thus, it should come as no surprise that along with politicians, entertainers and corporate executives, even police departments have joined the p.r. game. With one after another discovery of police misconduct around the country from high-visibility cases of brutality, to racial profiling, to corruption involving bribes and the planting of evidence, the recent headlines have been anything but flattering. Since the beating of Rodney King, the American masses have been made more aware than ever that Officer Friendly is not often there to get your cat out of the tree. Sometimes his intentions are far more pernicious than that. And so it is no shock to see police across the nation cranking up their own propaganda mills so as to counter the trend of bad press. In the wake of scandal, how better to get the public on your side than to portray yourself as under siege? How better to gain sympathy than to remind the citizens how crucial you ostensibly are to their own safety? A little crime scare can go a long way. Case in point: recent headlines from Cincinnati and Nashville. In the former, the police have been trying for months to excuse their well-documented overreactions to perceived danger. Since the mid-1990's officers there have killed 16 black men, many under highly suspicious circumstances, including Timothy Thomas, shot in the back this past April while running away from arrest on minor traffic violations. Ever since the rebellion that was triggered by the Thomas shooting, police have been working overtime to portray the rioters as terrorists with no legitimate grievances against the cops. Keith Fangman, head of the local Fraternal Order of Police, called a press conference immediately after the April shooting to display pictures of all the police in Cincinnati who have been killed in the line of duty. Stretching back many years, their photos hung behind Fangman's podium like a Wall of Fame, and Fangman made sure to point out that many of these officers were killed by black men, just like Tim Thomas. The none-too-subliminal message was plain: you can't be too careful, especially with those people running loose. Now, three months after the city's upheaval, Fangman is back, proclaiming that the recent rise in violent crime in Cincinnati has been due to the reluctance of officers to aggressively police high-crime areas for fear of being labeled racist. In other words, the calls for equitable treatment by the city's black residents have made cops afraid to do their jobs, with the attendant result that citizens are now less safe. Fangman would like the public to think this is what happens when you don't support local law enforcement and give them carte blanche to crack heads, apply chokeholds and shoot those who make the mistake of reaching to adjust their seatbelt during traffic stops. The implicit message essentially boils down to this: black people are too irrational to differentiate real racism from valid policing, so cops can't take the chance, and shouldn't be expected to do their jobs. That this work slowdown by white officers is a kind of insubordination that would get black people fired from any position in the nation seems to escape mention. That Cincinnati's blacks are quite capable of differentiating legitimate law enforcement from racist brutalization, as evidenced by the community's acceptance of the latest shooting, which was made necessary by the suspect's firing on the officer first, also seems not to phase Fangman and his bunch. Yet the Mayor's response to the refusal of Cincinnati's finest to do their jobs has been laughable. Acts of kindness to police officers, Charlie Lukens says, would be appropriate at this time. In other words, there will be no insistence that the police do what they are paid to do, and do it equitably. Instead there is only a plea for Cincinnatians to hug cops and thank them for their selfless actions. Apparently the FOP spin-mill is working. So too in Nashville, Tennessee, my hometown, and the site of at least a half dozen scandals and questionable incidents involving police in recent years. First there were allegations that white officers physically assaulted Latinos: allegations still being investigated by the Justice Department. Then another officer was found to be moonlighting as owner of an adult club for swingers. This was followed by an officer who sexually assaulted a woman who had called him for help. Scrappy stickers were slapped on billboards, directing passers-by to a crudely designed website. The company they were railing against was a frequent target of grassroots activism: Nike. And the group running this guerilla-style anti-advertising campaign? None other than Nike itself. It's been over a decade since Nike's beloved swoosh first came under attack by labor activists. Organizations like Adbusters, Global Exchange and NikeWatch have waged high profile campaigns to make that curving icon associated with slave labor as firmly as with Michael Jordan. Activists have manipulated logos, performed street theater and marred billboards in order to jam the Nike brand. Nike's recent soccer ads in Australia, however, have appropriated both the techniques and the language used against them. The campaign involved posting billboards that boasted The Most Offensive Boots We've Ever Made, pseudo-marring them with stickers that read Not Fair Mr. Technology, and even creating a fake grassroots protest group called Fans Fighting for Fairer Football (F.F.F.F). Although this fuzzy people-power group had banded together for a single cause that they believed was fair and just, they were not activists fighting for fair working conditions; these were actorvists arguing that Nike shoes gave their wearers an unfair advantage. How clever! How hip! That Nike, they sure can co-opt their critics with irreverent cool! It took hard work to link the words 'Nike' and 'sweatshop' in the public mind, says Kalle Lasn, director of Adbusters. But now, he says, without significantly changing its labor practices, Nike gets a chance to mock its critics, with the public laughing along. Though Nike may pass their latest stunt off lightly, like it is, to quote their other advertising campaign, just play (tee-hee, you're it!) -- this is no game of tag. Instead, it's another chapter in the age-old story of corporate marketers co-opting a cultural movement. But this is commodification with a twist, because, essentially, Nike is trying to capitalize on the anti-capitalism movement. Anarchy, after all, is sooo in. Black Bloc protesters strut their stuff on the nightly news, with their drums, explosions, and black hoods framing attractive, twenty-something faceshell, it's better than MTV and reality television put together! And you couldn't ask for better demographics. Demonstrations in Seattle, Quebec and most recently Genoa have been a hit with the 18 to 35 year olds; the audience the police are shooting at is precisely the one corporate advertisers are shooting for. While extreme in its co-optation of protesting techniques, Nike is hardly the only company jumping on the anti-corporate bandwagon. Apple, IBM and the Gap have all played with protest-chic. Apple has imposed their Think Different slogan onto billboards of Cesar Chavez, Malcolm X, and, most recently, young, red-flag waving militants. The Gap has seized on the graffiti aesthetic by dressing their windows in fake black spray paint that reads Freedom and We the People. They've even hung anarchist flags alongside their sweatshop-produced low-riding jeans. Meanwhile, IBM has made a more literal move to the streets. Their recent Linux campaign involved spraying stencils of Peace, Love and the Linux Penguin logo on city sidewalks. They have gotten flak for their graffiti Chicago fined them several thousand dollars and San Francisco officials decried it as vandalism, but that can only reinforce their hip, anti-establishment image. It's only a matter of time before Old Navy begins peddling gas mask patterned handkerchiefs (you've got to get this look!) and the Home Shopping Network makes the Black Bloc's monochromatic look available to you, 24 hours a day, in your choice of ebony, sable or raven. An exaggeration? Perhaps, but not without precedent. The corporate machine has proved itself capable of folding the prickliest of cultures into its embrace. Punk. Afro-centricism. Civil Rights. Virginia Slims straddled the Cosmo crowd while it spouted the feminist slogan You've come a long way, baby. Benetton appropriated anti-racist imagery to hippify its brand and the Pillsbury Dough Boy rapped, proving even biscuits can benefit from hip-hop's trendiness. Companies continually pan a movement, commodify its cool, strip its substance and use it to enhance their own logo. Nike Co. would like to think the current protest movement's anti-corporate bent is but a pesky inconvenience. But co-opting this dissent may be bit more difficult because, in part, it's a reaction to the very commodification past political movements have fallen victim to. SIXTH FLEET TWICE LAUNCHED PLANES TWICE WHITE HOUSE ORDERED THEM RECALLED The following was transcribed from a program on the NBC Network, Liberty Story, broadcast on 27 January 1992. The broadcast depicts Lieutenant Commander David E. Lewis, the officer in charge of Liberty's Research Department, relating a meeting he had with Rear Admiral Lawrence R. Geis shortly after the Liberty attack. Admiral Geis was the officer in charge of the embarked aircraft in both the USS America and USS Saratoga. It was Admiral Geis who was responsible for sending aircraft to help the Liberty when she came under attack. Liberty was under fire for 75 minutes and was confronted by armed and hostile Israeli forces for 152 minutes. During the very long period, no help came from the US Sixth Fleet less than 300 miles away, despite the fact that the ship was promised air support within ten minutes if she needed help. The first American forces to reach the Liberty arrived early the next morning, more than sixteen hours after the first shots were fired. ANNOUNCER: It had been 16 long hours since the attack began. The Liberty's wounded were evacuated by helicopter to the USS America. There, Liberty Intelligence Officer David Lewis says he met privately with Sixth Fleet Rear Admiral Lawrence Geis. Geis died in 1980 and Lewis's account of the meeting is un-corroborated. LEWIS: He said that he wanted somebody to know that we weren't forgotten... attempts HAD been made to come to our assistance. He said that he had launched a flight of aircraft to come to our assistance, and he had then called Washington. Secretary McNamara came on the line and ordered the recall of the aircraft, which he did. Concurrently, he said that since he suspected that they were afraid that there might have been nuclear weapons on board he reconfigured another flight of aircraft... strictly conventional weaponry... and re-launched it. After the second launch, he again called Washington to let them know what was going on. Again, Secretary McNamara ordered the aircraft recalled. Everybody is afraid of electricity, and rightfully so.' Torture and other cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment are prohibited in all circumstances in international law. Yet every day in countries all over the world people are being tortured and ill-treated. Much of the equipment used to inflict extreme pain and suffering has been around for years and continues to be sold on the international market with minimal restrictions. However, increasingly torturers are using weapons which exploit the latest technological developments, most notably high-voltage electro-shock stun weapons and chemical crowd control devices, such as pepper gas weapons. These weapons are being produced in ever greater numbers and their use and proliferation is spiralling out of control. The U.S. has been at the epicentre of this new technology. Despite professing to oppose torture, the U.S. authorities have permitted these new devices to be marketed and sold to law enforcement agencies in other countries with a minimum of public scrutiny, with no proper impartial testing, and without regulation of design and use. Stun weapons spreading In the 1970s only two companies, one in the U.S. and one in the United Kingdom (UK) , were known to be marketing high-voltage electro-shock stun weapons. However, in the last two years Amnesty International, with assistance from the UK-based Omega Foundation, has discovered more than 150 companies which produce this sort of equipment. This has increased enormously the availability of such weapons to security forces that practice torture. Companies which have produced or offered to supply electro-shock stun weapons in the last two years are known to have been operating in at least 22 countries, including Germany (30 companies), Taiwan (19), France (14), South Korea (13), China (12), South Africa (nine), Israel (eight), Mexico (six), Poland (four), Russia (four), Brazil (three), Spain (three) and the Czech Republic (two). The range of electro-shock stun devices now available around the world has expanded throughout the 1990s and companies offering to supply them have sprung up in Austria, Canada, Indonesia, Kuwait, Lebanon, Lithuania, Macedonia, the Philippines, Romania and Turkey. However, by far and away the largest producer and supplier of electro-shock stun weapons is the U.S.. Between 1999 and 2000, at least 97 U.S. companies were involved in this trade. The U.S. government has allowed companies to export modern high-voltage electro-shock weapons to countries where electro-shock torture has been reported. For example, high-voltage electro-shock stun shields have been exported to Turkey, stun guns have been exported to Indonesia, and Saudi Arabia has received electro-shock batons and shields, and dart-firing taser guns. Regrettably, the U.S. Commerce Department has not yet published meaningful export data for electro-shock weapons. However, what information is available is a clear indictment of the U.S.'s failure to ensure that such weapons were not being exported in situations where they could be used for human right abuses. For example, records under the export control commodity number A985 for the period 1997 to February 2000 show that export licences approved for Saudi Arabia for optical sighting devices, stun guns and shock batons were valued at some U.S. $3.2 million. This was despite the fact that the U.S. State Department's Report on Human Rights Practices stated that, in 1999, Saudi Arabian security forces continued to abuse detainees and prisoners. Likewise, such exports to Venezuela received licences worth approximately U.S.$3.7 million despite the U.S. State Department citing cases of electro-shock torture and excessive use of force against protesters. Hong Kong, Taiwan, Mexico and Bulgaria were among other recipients of export licence for large quantities of such weapons whose security forces were found to practice torture and ill-treatment. The failure of the U.S. authorities to take into account the human rights record of the recipient country when considering applications for export licences for this sort of equipment clearly increases the risk of torture. In September 1997 Mohammed Naguib Abu-Higazi was reportedly arrested by a State Security Intelligence (SSI) officer in Alexandria, Egypt, and accused of belonging to al-Gama'a al-Islamiya (Islamic Group). While held at the SSI office in Faraana, Alexandria, he was stripped of his clothes and given electric shocks from a cylinder shaped stick with a spiral metal wire. He was also reportedly deprived of food for three days, kept blindfolded throughout the entire nine-day detention period and threatened with sexual assault. In media parlance today, the overworked phrase most often is used to describe supporters of politicians rallying to the defense of their beleaguered friend or meal ticket from the attacks of the media. Supporters of Gary Condit are being compared to the circling of the wagons as they castigate the media for its concentrated coverage of Condit, claiming itâs only about sex and why canât they leave the congressman alone. Even a few in the media are taking this line. This writer also believes the media is missing the mark, but for a different reason. Even most of Conditâs supporters decry his sexual escapades. The analogy is more like a bunch of forest rangers encircling a small brush fire, to keep it from becoming a raging inferno, with the intention of letting it burn itself out. Most observers agree the Conditâs political career is over, particularly if some of the rumors about his bizarre sexual appetites prove true. If that is true, then what raging inferno is lurking out there Most people believe the missing (former) intern, Chandra Levy, who was having an affair with Condit, has been a victim of foul play. From the polls, a majority also believes that Condit was somehow involved although there is no proof as the congressman and his staff continue to stonewall the authorities. All can agree that Conditâs behavior makes it look like he is hiding guilt about something. As this writer has opined in earlier articles, the reason for Chandraâs disappearance and probable death may have nothing to do with her affair with Condit. Chandra could have found or stumbled onto information that made her dangerous to powerful people. The most likely subject on which she would have that dangerous knowledge is her assignment at the Bureau of Prisons shortly before her disappearance. Chandra was working with the media making arrangements for press conferences and the possible viewing of the execution of Timothy McVeigh. Simultaneously, she was responsible for preparing daily news summaries for the bureau staff. As a matter of course, Chandra was surfing the web for references to subjects of interest to the bureau. She also had access to and was searching bureau records, presumably in conjunction with information found on the Internet. We do not know what level of security clearance Chandra had and whether or not she had access to other records of the Department of Justice, of which the Bureau of Prisons is a part. One of the stories circulating on the web at that time was the connection between McVeigh and Dr. Louis Jolyn West, a CIA mind control expert. West was alleged to have made up to 17 visits to McVeigh in prison. By doing a web search on McVeighâs name, as Chandra most likely did, this writer found some very interesting coincidences. According to mind control researcher David Hoffman, in 1946 Cornell Aeronautical Laboratory was founded including the Fund for the Study of Human Ecology. The fund was a CIA financing conduit for mind control experiments by émigré Nazi scientists and others under the direction of CIA doctors Sidney Gotttlieb, Ewen Cameron and the same Louis Jolyn West. Virigianâs website gives no information as to its management or ownership but is deeply involved in artificial intelligence. Here is the strange coincidence. Nagy Over the last two years, I've discovered documents of the Defense Intelligence Agency proving beyond a doubt that, contrary to the Geneva Convention, the U.S. government intentionally used sanctions against Iraq to degrade the country's water supply after the Gulf War. The United States knew the cost that civilian Iraqis, mostly children, would pay, and it went ahead anyway. The primary document, "Iraq Water Treatment Vulnerabilities," is dated January 22, 1991. It spells out how sanctions will prevent Iraq from supplying clean water to its citizens. "Iraq depends on importing specialized equipment and some chemicals to purify its water supply, most of which is heavily mineralized and frequently brackish to saline," the document states. "With no domestic sources of both water treatment replacement parts and some essential chemicals, Iraq will continue attempts to circumvent United Nations Sanctions to import these vital commodities. Failing to secure supplies will result in a shortage of pure drinking water for much of the population. This could lead to increased incidences, if not epidemics, of disease." The document goes into great technical detail about the sources and quality of Iraq's water supply. The quality of untreated water "generally is poor," and drinking such water "could result in diarrhea," the document says. It notes that Iraq's rivers "contain biological materials, pollutants, and are laden with bacteria. Unless the water is purified with chlorine, epidemics of such diseases as cholera, hepatitis, and typhoid could occur." The document notes that the importation of chlorine "has been embargoed" by sanctions. "Recent reports indicate the chlorine supply is critically low." Food and medicine will also be affected, the document states. "Food processing, electronic, and, particularly, pharmaceutical plants require extremely pure water that is free from biological contaminants," it says. The document addresses possible Iraqi countermeasures to obtain drinkable water despite sanctions. "Iraq conceivably could truck water from the mountain reservoirs to urban areas. But the capability to gain significant quantities is extremely limited," the document states. "The amount of pipe on hand and the lack of pumping stations would limit laying pipelines to these reservoirs. Moreover, without chlorine purification, the water still would contain biological pollutants. Some affluent Iraqis could obtain their own minimally adequate supply of good quality water from Northern Iraqi sources. If boiled, the water could be safely consumed. Poorer Iraqis and industries requiring large quantities of pure water would not be able to meet their needs." The document also discounted the possibility of Iraqis using rainwater. "Precipitation occurs in Iraq during the winter and spring, but it falls primarily in the northern mountains," it says. "Sporadic rains, sometimes heavy, fall over the lower plains. But Iraq could not rely on rain to provide adequate pure water." As an alternative, "Iraq could try convincing the United Nations or individual countries to exempt water treatment supplies from sanctions for humanitarian reasons," the document says. "It probably also is attempting to purchase supplies by using some sympathetic countries as fronts. If such attempts fail, Iraqi alternatives are not adequate for their national requirements." In cold language, the document spells out what is in store: "Iraq will suffer increasing shortages of purified water because of the lack of required chemicals and desalination membranes. Incidences of disease, including possible epidemics, will become probable unless the population were careful to boil water." The document gives a timetable for the destruction of Iraq's water supplies. "Iraq's overall water treatment capability will suffer a slow decline, rather than a precipitous halt," it says. "Although Iraq is already experiencing a loss of water treatment capability, it probably will take at least six months (to June 1991) before the system is fully degraded." This document, which was partially declassified but unpublicized in 1995, can be found on the Pentagon's web site at www.gulflink.osd.mil. (I disclosed this document last fall. But the news media showed little interest in it. The only reporters I know of who wrote lengthy stories on it were Felicity Arbuthnot in the Sunday Herald of Scotland, who broke the story, and Charlie Reese of the Orlando Sentinel, who did a follow-up.) Mrs. Kennedy testified in a short private session held at her home in Washington, D.C., with Chief Justice Earl Warren, Commission General Council J. Lee Rankin, Attorney General Robert Kennedy, and a court reporter in attendance. Testimony of witnesses before the Warren Commission was made public in the fall of 1964. Jacqueline Kennedy's testimony was also released containing her description of her husbands wounds which read : "And just as I turned and looked at him, I could see a piece of his skull and I remember it was flesh colored. I remember thinking he just looked as if he had a slight headache. And I just remember seeing that. No blood or anything." But a second section in which she described the wounds she saw carried only the notation: (Reference to Wounds Deleted). Although very few Americans actually read those transcripts, historians and researchers who did read them were outraged, and waged a legal battle to have the omitted testimony released. In the early 1970s, a court decision required the United States Government to disclose to the public the contents of the still classified section of Mrs. Kennedy's 1964 Warren Commission testimony. Her previously withheld statement read: " I was trying to hold his hair on. From the front there was nothing --- I suppose there must have been. But from the back you could see, you know, you were trying to hold his hair on, and his skull on." Releasing this previously withheld section gave researchers what was assumed to be Mrs. Kennedy's complete description of the President's head wounds. Researchers took for granted that the hand-typed transcript page released by the National Archives from the official records of the Warren Commission ended the matter. However, new analysis reveals that the original court tape actually reads: "... I could see a piece of his skull sort of wedge-shaped, like that, and I remember that it was flesh colored with little ridges at the top." Filmmaker Mark Sobel found the discrepancy while doing research for a forthcoming documentary on JFK. Sobel explained, "I was quite surprised to find that Mrs. Kennedy was not asked for more detail --- she had an opportunity to view the wounds longer and closer than any other person as they originally existed. Given the seemingly contradictory testimony by the doctors who treated the President at Parkland Hospital in Dallas just after the shooting and the Doctors who performed the autopsy at Bethesda many hours later, Mrs. Kennedy's testimony would appear critical." Sobel filed under the Freedom of Information Act to have the court reporter's original tape of Mrs. Kennedy's testimony unsealed, citing that the content had already been fully declassified by the courts and that it was in the best interest of the public for the accuracy of the existing transcript to be verified. Sobel explained, "As I compared the 1964 transcript to the original court reporter's paper tape, I reached a sentence officially transcribed by the Warren Commission as: "I could see a piece of his skull, and I remember that it was flesh colored" words on the original paper taped no longer matched up." Court Reporter Kathy Bradford of Bradford Court Reporting of Dallas, Texas, agreed. Bradford reviewed the transcript from the archives and certified Mrs. Kennedy's complete statement was not found in the Warren Commission's version.. This extra description was almost certainly witheld from the Commissioners and Legal Staff as well, since these descriptions are missing in the typed transcript that is contained in the actual Warren Commission Records --- before it was finally released publicly in its entirety. Apprised of these new details, David Mantik, M.D., Ph.D. stated, "Given the lack of follow-up in Mrs. Kennedy's description to exactly what she saw, these details could have been valuable to the House Select Committee on Assassinations that reviewed the medical evidence." Mantik is one of the few doctors allowed to view President Kennedy's original autopsy materials in the National Archives. Secret Service Agent Clint Hill, seen in films and photos in Dealey Plaza climbing onto the rear of the limousine, stated in his Warren Commission testimony, "Between the time I originally grabbed the handhold and until I was up on the car, Mrs. Kennedy--the second noise that I heard had removed a portion of the President's head, and he had slumped noticeably to his left. It was Boukhari, then a young officer in the Moroccan intelligence service, who ordered the tank from the company that made boilers for Moroccan railways. A Col Martin of the CIA highly recommended the system to his trainees in the north African kingdom, saying it had worked well for the Iranian SAVAK. Made of stainless steel, 1.5 metres high and 2.5 metres wide, slightly curved on the top and bottom, the tank was installed at the Dar-el-Mokri torture centre in Casa Blanca. It took two men wearing protective masks, suits and gloves to fill it. The acid was so strong it destroyed everything, "even big bones like the femur", Boukhari recalled in a landmark interview with Le Monde and the Moroccan weekly, Le Journal, this summer. Between 1961 and 1967, Boukhari added, dozens of opponents to King Hassan II disappeared inside the shiny receptacle. "Pity we can't soak you in acid," Mr Abraham Serfaty, who survived King Hassan's prisons (see The Irish Times, February 21st, 2001) remembers his own torturer saying. Boukhari's testimony resolved two great mysteries surrounding the disappearance in October 1965, of the opposition leader Mehdi Ben Barka. Who killed the charismatic maths professor and Third World militant? And what happened to his body? Boukhari was the duty officer at the "cab 1" headquarters of the Moroccan intelligence service on the weekend when Ben Barka was "arrested" outside the Brasserie Lipp in Saint-Germain-des-Prés by two French policemen working for King Hassan. "Mission accomplished. The package is ready for shipment. Send the aircraft," was the message dictated from France by Mohamed Achaachi, the head of the Moroccan "counter-subversion" department, to his superiors. Boukhari conveyed the words to Gen Mohamed Oufkir and his deputy, Commandant Ahmed Dlimi. Gen Oufkir was the King's right-hand man, minister of the interior, head of national security and the intelligence services. Both Gene Oufkir and Commandant Dlimi flew to Paris, where they joined in the interrogation of Ben Barka, who was handcuffed and hung from the ceiling in a suburban villa. Moroccan agents who witnessed the scene later told Boukhari how Oufkir cut little pieces of flesh from Ben Barka's chest with a dagger. King Hassan had kept 30 agents working full time for seven months, tracking Ben Barka from Cairo to Algiers to Geneva, listening to his phone calls, opening his mail. Oufkir intended to drug the opposition leader and spirit him back to Morocco on a military aircraft - not kill him. Back in Rabat, the CIA colonel realised the operation had gone wrong and nervously hung around Boukhari's office. At Orly airport, the liaison officer between Air France and the French and Moroccan intelligence services, Antoine Lopez, arranged for a Moroccan diplomatic car to transfer Ben Barka's body to a Moroccan military aircraft. A French diplomat booked Gen Oufkir and Commandant Dlimi back to Morocco on a commercial flight. Boukhari saw a police commissioner rush off carrying an array of cameras. The body, still dressed in the suit Ben Barka wore when he was kidnapped, was photographed on a stretcher in the courtyard of the torture centre. For the pictures they kept in their files, Moroccan agents put Ben Barka's hat and sunglasses back on his head. The only copy of the film taken as the body was lowered into the acid tank was given to King Hassan for his private viewing. Gen Oufkir was killed in an attempted coup against King Hassan seven years later, and his wife and children were then imprisoned for 18 years. Three French thugs who participated in Ben Barka's kidnapping fled to Morocco, where they were later murdered on Commandant Dlimi's orders. King Hassan died in July 1999, and was succeeded by his son, Mohamed VI. For 36 years, the Ben Barka affair has symbolised the complicity of Western intelligence services in propping up dictators. Morocco changed, and one of Ben Barka's comrades, Mr Abderrahmane Youssoufi, is now the country's prime minister. But socialist party activists still say that "Ben Barka's corpse lies between the left and the monarchy". King Mohamed VI has allowed Ben Barka's family to visit Morocco (see The Irish Times October 27th, 1999) and a French investigating magistrate travelled there in June. Then Ahmed Boukhari's sordid account of the murder was published. Prime Minister Youssoufi said this week that there could be no statute of limitations for Ben Barka's murder, "For it was a political crime in which several states were implicated". Sure, it would have been good if Pius had spoken out against Hitler but that is hind sight speaking and I do not believe the full picture was realized until it was too late. But your saying Hitler was the way he was BECAUSE of his religion is one of the most prejudicial statements I have ever heard made. Most evil people are that way IN SPITE of whatever religious training they have had, regardless of that religion. Few religions advocate evil. The same religion produced Albert Sweitzer and Mother Teresa. Did Son of Sam kill because he was Jewish or in spite of it? Excommunication would have done nothing for it is just saying that the person cannot receive the sacrament of communion until some issue is resolved. They can still attend mass, etc. for only God can truly excommunicate. If Hitler had wanted money from me, I would have been afraid to refuse. I also think of the artworks in the Vatican and wonder if, given the Nazi's penchant for art, there was an effort to protect the irreplaceable. According to one memo, SV40 was found in three of 15 lots of the oral vaccine seven months after the federal directive was issued in March 1961. Lederle released the contaminated vaccine to the public anyway, the memo shows. The documents also suggest that the company failed to test the monkey- kidney seed strains used to make the bulk polio vaccine for contamination, despite a written warning from Dr. Albert Sabin, who developed the oral vaccine. Lederle and the US government insist there is no evidence that any contaminated vaccine was distributed after the directive went into effect. Scientists discovered SV40 in the Salk polio vaccine in 1960. By then as many as 30 million Americans had been given injections of the SV40-tainted polio vaccine, which was first licensed in 1955. In recent years more than 60 scientific studies have found SV40 in rare human brain, bone and lung-related cancers, the same kinds of tumors the virus caused in laboratory animals. Some scientists believe SV40 may play a role in causing those cancers. One of the biggest mysteries, however, is why SV40 has been found in tumors removed from people who never received the contaminated Salk vaccine. Researchers have several theories for how the virus could have spread from those infected through the Salk vaccine: in transmission from mother to fetus or through breast milk; through sexual activity or a flu-like virus. But the Lederle documents, which were obtained by Philadelphia attorney Stanley Kops in litigation not related to SV40, raise the possibility the virus might have been transmitted by contaminated oral vaccine, licensed for production in 1962. The documents include: A November 1961 memo saying the virus was found in three of 15 lots of vaccine. According to the memo, Dr. Roderick Murray, head of the government's program to ensure vaccine purity, allowed the lots to be released. To comply with the removal order, Lederle had switched from rhesus monkeys, which are natural hosts for SV40, to African green monkeys, supposedly free from SV40. However, the memo notes that SV40 was found in 10 percent of the green monkeys. A letter from Sabin to Lederle in October 1962, warning that sufficient testing for SV40 contamination had not been done on one of his strains of weakened polio virus that formed the seed for bulk vaccine production. A confidential memo in 1979 from a Lederle official stating: It should be noted that Lederle did not test the original Sabin seeds for extraneous agents or neurovirulence since Dr. Sabin assured us that this had been done. Another memo stating that Lederle did not test the seed since only 50 (milliliters) or less of each seed were provided by Dr. Sabin. The two memos added that testing was unnecessary because later vaccine samples submitted for license were free of SV40. Kops also said that he had taken testimony in 1998 from a top Lederle official who said the company did not have the test results from many of the vaccine lots. The vaccine manufacturers and the government need to disclose what really happened, said Kops. Without the facts, (scientists) will continue to look in the wrong places to explain how people were infected with SV40 after 1961. At a 1997 conference, however, a Lederle representative outlined the series of tests the company uses to detect SV40 contamination. The company also says that it uses antiserum to neutralize any SV40 in the master seeds. But it is not clear whether these procedures were in place in the years after the US government issued its directive. Last year, a lawsuit was filed in Los Angeles against Lederle by the parents of 2 1/2-year-old Alexander Horwin who died of a brain tumor that later tested positive for SV40. The suit claims that the tumor was caused by SV40 and that he became infected through a 1997 oral polio vaccine. Kops and attorney Donald MacLachlan represent a New Jersey family that is considering a suit against vaccine manufacturers. In 1970, surgeons removed a large brain tumor from 2-year-old Mark Moreno. http://www.mediamonitors.net/index.html Declassified documents point to US war crimes in Iraq by Stephen Gowans The United States is knowingly violating Article 54 of the Geneva Convention which prohibits any country from undermining "objects indispensable to the survival of (another country's) civilian population," including drinking water installations and supplies, says Thomas Nagy, a business professor at George Washington University. Writing in the September 2001 issue of The Progressive, Nagy cites recently declassified documents that show the United States was aware of the civilian health consequences of destroying Iraq's drinking water and sanitation systems in the Gulf War, and knew that sanctions would prevent the Iraqi government from repairing the degraded facilities. During the Gulf War, coalition forces bombed Iraq's eight multi-purpose dams, destroying flood control systems, irrigation, municipal and industrial water storage, and hydroelectric power. Major pumping stations were targeted, and municipal water and sewage facilities were destroyed. Article 54 of the Geneva Convention prohibits attacks on "drinking water installations and supplies and irrigation works." Nagy says that not only did the United States deliberately destroy drinking water and sanitation facilities, it knew sanctions would prevent Iraq from rebuilding, and that epidemics would ensue. One document, written soon after the bombing, warned that sanctions would prevent Iraq from importing "water treatment replacement parts and some essential chemicals" leading to "increased incidences, if not epidemics, of disease." Another document lists the most likely diseases: "diarrheal diseases (particularly children); acute respiratory illnesses (colds and influenza); typhoid; hepatitis A (particularly children); measles, diphtheria, and pertussis (particularly children); meningitis, including meningococcal (particularly children); cholera (possible, but less likely.)" Then U.S. Navy Secretary John Lehman estimated that 200,000 Iraqis died in the Gulf War, but many more have died since. UNICEF estimates that well over a million Iraqis have died as a result of the U.S-led sanctions regime, in place for the last decade. Some 500,000 children have died, and an estimated 4,000 die from various preventable, sanctions-related diseases, every month, says the U.N. agency. Despite the massive human toll, the United States continues to support the sanctions regime, arguing that sanctions won't be lifted until U.N. inspectors are free to return to Iraq to verify that the country has rid itself of weapons of mass destruction. American Scott Ritter, a former U.N. arms inspector, claims that Iraq is effectively disarmed, and has been for some time. And deaths from sanctions exceed those from weapons of mass destruction. Political scientists John and Karl Mueller say that sanctions have "contributed to more deaths during the post Cold War era than all the weapons of mass destruction throughout history," including deaths at Hiroshima and Nagasaki. At one point, former U.S. Secretary of State Madeleine Albright said that despite the civilian deaths the sanctions were "worth it." Meanwhile, Israel, a U.S. ally in the region, is widely believed to have an arsenal of 200 nuclear weapons. While in violation of countless U.N. Resolutions ordering its withdrawal from the Occupied Territories, Israel faces no sanctions and no order to disarm. Amnesty International, which has warned that Israel's crackdown on the latest Palestinian uprising, or Intifada, borders on war crimes, recently condemned Tel Aviv for its "utter disregard for human life in the Occupied Territories" and for its violations of international law. And yet even calls for intervention as mild as placing international observers in the Occupied Territories have been rebuffed. The Gulf War erupted after Iraq invaded neighboring Kuwait. After the war, the United Nations imposed sanctions, ordering Iraq to disarm. Iraq's violation of international law in invading its neighbor was cited for the harsh treatment. But critics of the policy say that punishment for violations of international law are being meted out unevenly and hypocritically. Israel's innumerable transgressions go unpunished, while governments that have fallen out with Washington, often over investment or debt repayment issues, are treated severely. Moreover, say critics, the United States itself has a long track record of violating international law. Washington's undermining of Iraq's water treatment and sanitation facilities in violation of the Geneva Convention is just one of many recent transgressions, including the bombing of Yugoslavia, Sudan, Afghanistan, and the continued bombing of Iraq. The panel said the problems stemmed from inadequate laws and procedures for counting votes, not voting technology. 'We didn't suddenly become stupid in one election.' - DOUG LEWIS Executive director of the Election Center THE NEW REPORT was put together by a task force of about three dozen elections officials and sponsored by the Election Center, a nonpartisan, nonprofit center created to help elections officials do their jobs. The task force reviewed the close presidential contest between Republican George W. Bush and Democrat Al Gore, which was not decided until after a bitter 35-day post-election legal battle over the Florida results that went all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. We didn't suddenly become stupid in one election, said Doug Lewis, executive director of the Election Center, at a news conference. And yet there is this tendency to believe that because there were problems we now need to have someone stand over us and guide us through this process. The report focuses on the finding by the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights that black voters' ballots were disproportionately tossed out. Allegations reported to the national Commission on Civil Rights during its hearings on Election 2000 are serious and must be investigated, says the report. A Justice spokesman responded that complaints have been investigated as they came up ever since the election. The civil rights commission's June report said that more than half of the rejected ballots were cast by black voters, even though they made up only one in 10 voters. The commission also found that disabled voters and those with language barriers had trouble voting. It suggested widespread violations of the Voting Rights Act. STRONG DISSENT Two commission members appointed by Republicans strongly dissented. Since the November election, the Department of Justice received thousands of complaints from citizens about the election, said Dan Nelson, a spokesman for the agency's civil rights division. All but 12 of those (in Florida) were closed by early January and the Department of Justice continues to investigate these 12. He would not specify the nature of those complaints. Some complaints in other states are also being investigated, Nelson said. Doug Lewis, executive director of the Election Center, said it is important that the Justice Department thoroughly investigate all of the complaints made to the civil rights commission and determine their legitimacy. He said any public perception that the elections were fair is just as important as whether there were actual problems. Of the Justice position that they're thoroughly investigating the complaints, Lewis said Thursday: If they have, they haven't done it very publicly, most of us are unaware that they have done this. PLAGUED BY PROBLEMS The civil rights commission's six-month investigation of the contested Florida vote found the election was plagued by faulty machinery, problems with access to polling places and faulty purging of voter rolls. The task force said laws, policies and procedures were at the center of the problems - not voting technology. And it dismissed any legislation that would impose widespread federal election rules on the states. The Election Center's report follows the release of an election study headed by former Presidents Carter and Ford, and a report from the bipartisan, nonprofit organization at Georgetown University, known as the Constitution Project. That's one of the prerequisites, if the rhetoric of many Republicans are taken seriously. My conservative credentials hold up pretty well. If I had things my way, the IRS would be dismantled. The income tax would be abolished. Affirmative action would come to its miserable conclusion. The powers of the federal and even state governments would be dramatically reduced, Roe v. Wade would be overturned, and the nation would be magically rescued from the perverse warriors of political correctness and humanistic new age morality. Indeed, over the past couple of years, I have written quite bluntly on virtually all these subjects without apology. But there is one position I hold which cannot be tolerated by the conservative establishment. It is such a great heresy that it is considered blasphemy by the self-appointed ecclesiastical lords and guardians of real conservatism. That position is the rejection of the long held right wing doctrine of internationalism and militaristic imperialism. Think that is dramatic and overblown rhetoric? Think again. This country believes it has the right to rape the sovereignty of any nation that fails to succumb to its dictatorial demands. This is a country that has its military in countless foreign lands where it was never invited and never belonged. This is a country that tells foreign powers where and when it can fly its own planes over its own territory, then screams bloody murder when these same people try to protect themselves against US aggression. Just witness the ongoing 11-year rape of Iraq. Since the end of the Gulf War, armed forces, led by the United States, have engaged in a ruthless, merciless perpetual war against the Iraqi people. Countless children and elderly citizens have been starved by sanctions. Many civilians have needlessly died in US retaliation strikes (retaliation for Iraq trying to free itself from US aggression). Why, just two days ago, the US again bombed Iraq for daring to assert its sovereignly over its own air space. These kinds of events are hardly ever news anymore. These stories are buried in the back of our newspaper and rarely receive any attention in the national news because such imperialism is now the norm. Saddam Hussein, an aging and unhealthy dictator who allegedly poses a huge threat to American interests put it this way: Do you know what excuse was invented this time by the masters of the (White) House? That Iraq is threatening the planes of the US enemy which fly through our skies, our sovereignty and our territory. That is exactly the excuse coming from the Pentagon, the President and from imperialists in both parties. And guess what. Saddam is absolutely, 100% correct. And the United States, as it frequently is on matters of international relations, is totally in the wrong. Which one of you, my fellow right-wing (alleged) lovers of liberty, would like for a foreign power to dictate to us the terms of where we could fly our planes over our own territory? Who are the bold and consistent cheerleaders of US foreign policy that believe that China has the full rights and privileges to send spy planes over US land to monitor our military activities? Conservatives, please raise your hands if you believe that we'd have no right to shoot down such a plane that violated our sovereignty, or that we must follow orders from a foreign state that declared part of our airspace a U.S. no-fly zone? Would you agree to such terms? Of course you wouldn't. You would rightly want to fight back against such oppression. So in the name of all that is rational, why is it such a hard concept for some of you armchair generals to understand that other countries also don't want to be subjected to such tyranny?
