Soviets in 10 seconds you will get 875 hits. I did not invent
this as you are implying. This is just one of the articles
selected at random but it is pretty good and note the author has
even received the ADL's award before you label him anti-Semitic.
This is a fact. And yes, the Vatican did assist in the Ratline as
did many others with the philosophy that it was better we get the
scientists than they be used against us. I find it so very strange
that people think the Pope should have sided with the Protestants
and Jews and ignored the plight of his own Catholics! And you'd
think he had an army at his command and could have actually done
something. In Holland where some of the most outspoken (against
the Nazis) were, the result was worse treatment for the Jews. But
note the criteria this author suggests is required now for anything
to be published on this subject, too, for therein lies the
problems.

Selling the Holocaust is a gigantic enterprise that has less to do
with preserving the memory of Jewish victims than exploiting the
Holocaust for political, ideological and economic purposes. The
consequence is that history has become a major casualty. In the
absence of any quality control on the type of books that are
published, Holocaust historiography is subject to a kind of
Gresham's Law where bad history drives out good history, making it
difficult for even professional historians to determine where
sensationalism, propaganda and martyrology ends and history begins.
To have a book published by a major American publisher on the
Holocaust, the author must meet only a few criteria: Does the book
depict Jewish victimization in pristine terms (i.e., nothing
negative or compromising about Jewish behavior)? Even if the book
tangentially deals with Christian victims of the Nazis, does the
author drown these Christians sufficiently in antiSemitism to
compromise their victimhood and emphasize their role as victimizers
in order to maintain the sovereign wartime experience of the Jews?
Better yet, does the author depict nonJewish groups, especially
Catholic Poles, as either Nazi collaborators or accomplices or
perpetrators of atrocities?
If these criteria are met, then it is extraordinarily easy for an
author to garner notoriety for his book in leading American
newspapers and news magazines, which are notoriously unsympathetic
with the Polish dimension of PolishJewish relations.
This is what has happened to Professor Jan T. Gross, a Jew who
emigrated to the West from Poland in 1968. His book, Neighbors,
published last year under its Polish title, Sadiedzi , was recently
released in the United States by Princeton University Press. Gross
is not a professional historian, but a sociologist, an important
point in, analyzing the merit of his book.
Gross's thesis is that Christian Poles were solely responsible for
killing 1600 Jews in the village of Jedwabne in northeastern Poland
in July, 1941. As he puts it, Half of the population ... murdered
the other half. His explanation for the atrocity is that
antiSemitism made the Poles do it.
Why in Jedwabne, where Polish-Jewish relations had been good before
the war, would the Poles suddenly decide to kill their Jewish
neighbors? Gross presents the tableau of hundreds of Poles
mindlessly slaughtering Jews because now, quite suddenly, they
despised them and lusted after their property. Is this, scenario
really credible? What had changed in Polish-Jewish relations? Gross
dismisses a critical fact-Jewish treason in eastern Poland, where
Jedwabne is located, during the Soviet occupation.
Eastern Poland was inhabited by Poles, Jews, Belorussians,
Ukrainians and others who fought, brutalized and betrayed each
other in one of the worst places in wartime Europe. In June, 1941,
the Nazis broke their nonaggression pact with the Soviets, who had
occupied eastern Poland since September, 1939, and

Germany and the Soviet Union form a Nonaggression Pact 1939 The smell of it was in the air, of an imminent German attack on Poland. It was because of this that Chamberlain and Halifax decided not to delay any type of action against Germany. On March 31st 1939, Chamberlain announced in a crowded House of Commons that if Poland was in any type of a threat of invasion, Britain and France would come to their aid. An Anglo-Polish treaty of Alliance was under preparation and Britain also included Rumania, Greece and Turkey under their protection. Though angered and surprised, Hitler was not deterred by this treaty. He commanded his generals to ready their troops and prepare for an attack no later than September 1st. Hitler's aim was to start a war with sudden, heavy blows and gaining rapid successes. (Bullock-'91) Hitler now depended on the Triple Alliance of Germany, Japan and Italy to be against Britain, America and Soviet Union. But Japan was not in favor of this Alliance because it was not ready for any confrontation from American and the British Navy. Since Japan was reluctant to be in the Alliance, Hitler looked to Mussolini in Italy. On May 22nd 1939, Hitler and Mussolini signed the Pact of Steel in Berlin which bound each country to come to the others aid immediately. (Bullock '91) Hitler was convinced that the effect of the treaty would be to isolate Poland by weakening the British and French resolve to come to her aid. (Bullock '91) Now, the only country left standing without a commitment was the Soviet Union. In the summer of 1939 the focus of European diplomatic activity became Moscow; with the British and French competing with the Germans for Stalin's favor. (Bullock '91) If the Soviet Union could also remain neutral in such a war between Germany and the Western Powers, this would at least enable Stalin to buy time and possibly secure territorial and strategic advantages in Eastern Europe as part of his price. (Bullock '91) The Non- Aggression Pact of 1939 was signed in August with a secret agenda between Stalin and Hitler. In the public's eye, it was a shock to see two old enemies shake hands but the secret agenda consisted of Eastern Europe. Soviet Union would have the Baltic states of Eastern Europe as long as she remained true to the Pact whereas Germany would have Western Europe. Now a war was inevitable with Russia in a neutral corner as it seen from a public's point of view. One month later, the Germans invade Poland and Russia takes her piece: the Baltic states. How many women who haven't slept with him know that he shaves his entire body hair? Smith's attorney Jim Robinson told the New York Daily News. During Condit's interview the night before with ABC's Connie Chung, Condit denied that he and Smith had had a relationship and accused her of fabricating the claim to sell to the tabloids. But Robinson's allusion to Condit's kinky personal grooming habits, combined with his client's apparently accurate description of the inside of the congressman's Washington, D.C. apartment, had Condit's superlawyer Abbe Lowell backpedalling Friday night. I know (Condit's answer) came out like a flat denial and I think one of those things I can do is clear it up, Lowell told CNN's Larry King Live. Look, the exchange (between Condit and Chung) was going hot and heavy at that point and she was asking about the affidavit and she was asking about lawyers, and then, did you have a relationship? And I think the 'No' came out and the 'No' may not have applied to what it looks like it applied to. In addition to Condit's bizarre body hair fetish, Robinson said his client could also describe every inch of the apartment where Condit and Smith had sex. He's got no pictures on any walls, and everything is done in black and white, the attorney said. In 1994, Paula Jones claimed that she could prove ex-President Clinton had exposed himself to her by indentifying his distinguishing characteristics. Four years later, attorneys for Jones revealed that her description included the claim that Clinton had abnormally small and disfigured genitalia. Former Clinton girlfriend Gennifer Flowers partially corroborated Jones description, when she revealed to WABC Radio a year earlier, The president has a small penis. Ex-Condit girlfriend Smith is apparently sitting on other potentially embarrassing details about Condit's unorthodox lifestyle. Earlier this month attorney Robinson told Fox News Channel's Hannity Colmes that investigators had asked him not to discuss certain shocking details about his client's relationship with Condit. The encounter near the 10th hole of the Rancho Park golf course in Los Angeles might have been forgotten but for a few salient details. Current and former federal government officials say the young man who delivered the watch was Tommy Gambino, son of a convicted heroin trafficker serving a 45-year sentence. And, unknown to Mr. Clinton, his partners included two Air Force intelligence officers who reported the incident and said that Mr. Clinton had said he was helping Tommy Gambino's father, Rosario Gambino. In late September 1999, two agents from the Federal Bureau of Investigation walked up the driveway of Mr. Clinton's home in Redondo Beach, Calif., to ask him about his relationship with Rosario Gambino, who prosecutors have repeatedly said is an associate of the Gambino crime family and a distant relative of Carlo Gambino, the late crime boss. Mr. Clinton, the half-brother of the former president, acknowledged that he had lobbied the United States Parole Commission for the early release of Rosario Gambino, according to the bureau's account of the interview. Mr. Clinton said that Tommy Gambino had told him we will take care of you if he won Rosario Gambino's release from prison, according to the agents' notes, and Mr. Clinton said he understood that meant he would be financially rewarded. I'm not stupid, he told the agents, according to their notes. Two years later, Roger Clinton is the subject of Congressional and federal investigations of influence peddling and other possible illegalities in last-minute pardons granted by President Clinton. Shortly before President Clinton left office, Roger Clinton assured Tommy Gambino that his father was a lock for a pardon, a person close to Tommy Gambino has said in an interview. Rosario Gambino's name was on a list sent by the White House to the Justice Department in late January for possible clemency, but no pardon was granted. In an unrelated case, a felon has told prosecutors that he paid Roger Clinton $225,000 to lobby for a pardon and complained that Mr. Clinton did little or nothing in return. A close look at Mr. Clinton's effort to help Rosario Gambino secure early release from prison, based on interviews and documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, portray him in a different light: a tireless, if inept, advocate whose persistent pleas annoyed and worried parole commission officials. Nearly two years before President Clinton left office, the F.B.I. was suspicious enough of Roger Clinton's efforts to free Rosario Gambino that agents tried a sting operation that involved parole commission officials. It failed. Roger Clinton's campaign on Mr. Gambino's behalf was persistent and inventive, documents and interviews show. He made at least four visits to the parole commission's headquarters in Chevy Chase, Md., a Washington suburb. He tried to exploit his ties to an Arkansas parole commissioner. He invoked his brother's authority. He produced listings from a Sicilian telephone book to show that Gambino was a common Italian name and, thus, not every Gambino was tied to the New York crime family. Every time the phone rang, you thought, `Oh, no, is it Roger Clinton again?' recalled Thomas C. Kowalski, a top parole commission staff member. Roger Clinton's lawyer Bart H. Williams said he was not surprised to hear that Mr. Clinton's brand of advocacy stirred consternation at the parole commission. That's the kind of guy Roger is, Mr. Williams said. Once he is engaged in something, he's a pretty passionate guy. Mr. Clinton, a sometime rock singer, told the F.B.I. agents in the 1999 interview that he felt a bond with Tommy Gambino, a Californian in his late 20's who runs a company, Progressive Telecom, which sells pay phones to restaurants and stores. According to the F.B.I. account of the interview, Mr. Clinton said the two men were introduced at a club in Beverly Hills, Calif., by an acquaintance in the music business. Mr. Clinton said he identified with the younger Gambino's struggle to get through life without a father while being judged by his family name. Federal law enforcement officials were scrutinizing Tommy Gambino's activities long before he crossed paths with Roger Clinton. They've never proven anything, said Duncan DeVille, a former federal prosecutor who until February served on the organized crime strike force in Los Angeles. But Tommy was under investigation for a long period of time for his alleged connections to organized crime. James D. Like a fat, vain, chain-smoking, neurotic, alcoholic the media that conservative once feared and loathed has self-inflicted maladies which combine to render palliatives counter-productive or useless. Liberalism itself, of course, has been dead for decades. The defining election was not 1994 or even 1980, but 1966 when the American people determined in the short span of two years that the Great Society was an utter catastrophe, and that the noble, honest Barry Goldwater was vastly superior in every meaningful way to the sleazy, incompetent LBJ. CBS, Newsweek, NBC, and the other few outlets that massaged any national message did not try very hard to defend liberalism. Instead, they championed heroes who attacked it from the Left (it was simply not liberal enough, you see) and changed the name of liberals to progressives or moderates. The other side -- the huge and varied group of people who simple wanted to live in peace, security, and freedom -- were lumped into Archie Bunkers or other crude stereotypes worthy of the vile Jew-baiting Nazi Julius Streicher, or unapologetic conservative political leaders invariably acquired the new titles arch- or ultra- or extreme. This alone, of course, was not enough. Liberals also nurtured the poisons of what they later would call the politics of personal destruction. Richard Nixon was not much of a conservative, nor for that matter was his Vice President Spiro Agnew, but they were Republicans and the character flaws and weaknesses which media of all persuasions ignored in FDR and JFK suddenly became the new clarion call of liberal Democrats and their stooges in the media. By 1992, Clinton understand the full measure of liberal addiction to power. He could lie -- blatantly, mockingly, brutally -- and get a pass. He could ruin lives in ways that Nixon's pals would never have dreamed of doing, and CNN would always find his latest, vacuous platitude more newsworthy. Stories of sexual harassment were spiked. Tales of goons terrorized defenseless women were ignored. Soon Slick Willie had won the limbo dance of low morals, hands down. These stories, however, were news. They were important. And conservatives, who had learned to be lean, mean, and tough, developed outlets to reach the people with the facts much more quickly than the dinosaurs of the Democrat liberal establishment. People stopped seeing these empty suits on network programs as reporters and journalists and more as grotesque caricatures of serious defenders of honest government. Moreover, the champions of the new conservative armies did not care a fig what professors, serious journalists, and other paternal figures thought of them. Radio programs, Internet web sites, self-published books, articles, and periodicals, think tanks that actually researched an thought -- all these men and women had learned the hard way that liberals are never honest, never serious, and never concerned with anything but power. Perhaps the defining moment was in Florida, when the son of a good man who had been robbed of the Presidency (recall that the Democrat Senate committee that had spent eight years of fruitless investigation of President Bush announced his legal and ethical innocence the very day after he lost the relatively close election of 1992 -- an act of crass arrogance and abuse rarely seen in American political history) decided to fight and fight and fight. One of the major Pharoahs of Egypt and Nubia/Kush was Taharqo. The Sphinx of Taharqo c. 690-664 BC, found in Temple 1 at Kawa and the shabti (tomb figure) of Taharqo in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston is strikingly similar in facial features, including, the short round face, thick lips and flat nose associated with the Olmec people (Taylor, 1991). So this has been going on for years..if one took a geiger counter in one of these stores it would hit the roof. How could that have happened to a seasoned campaigner who has been in politics for thirty years and had the benefit of expert (and expensive) advice from legal and public relations professionals? Panelists on both network and cable outlet television shows, from across the political spectrum, seem to have arrived at a consensus explanation. First, they postulate (some from alleged inside information), there was a conflict between advice from the lawyers and the PR people and the lawyers prevailed. With this the author can agree. Secondly, they give us two options. Either Condits legal team (headed by lead attorney Abbe Lowell) was grossly incompetent, or Condit ignored their advice and tried to do it his way. This writer rejects both of those choices. Abbe Lowell is regarded among his peers in elite Washington legal circles as one of the premiere attorneys at combining legal strategy with PR spin, one of the reasons he was chosen to defend Bill Clinton at the former presidents Senate impeachment trial. From Condits mechanical and repetitive non-answers to some of Chungs questions, it was obvious he was regurgitating memorized statements from a script. It is reasonable to assume that script was prepared by the legal team, which had advised him not to admit to anything. Following that advice, Condit appeared to be calling a number of people liars including the D.C. police, Mrs. Levy, Chandras aunt, Anne Marie Smith, Joline McKay and Chandra herself. The result may have been a nearly complete destruction of Condits credibility in the publics perception casting doubt on his clear and unequivocal denials of having anything to do with Chandras disappearance. That may have been the exact result Condits legal team desired. In the authors article of August 18th entitled Levy/Condit Amazing Coincidences the following statement was made, This writer does not believe that Condit and his staff requested these lawyers. They were most likely assigned there as a team with a containment strategy to ensure that no mention is made of the CIA/drug and OKC bombing (Timothy McVeigh) subjects in connection with Chandra Levys disappearance. That statement was prompted by the authors belief that Chandras disappearance likely has nothing to do with her affair with the congressman but with dangerous knowledge she acquired on her intern job at the Bureau of Prisons. For this writer, that theory was given added credence with the presence of attorney Beth Wilkinson on the Condit legal team. Wilkinson was involved with the prosecution in both the Noreiga (CIA/drug connection) and Timothy McVeigh (OKC bombing) trials. Her apparent assignment was to keep any reference to government involvement in both subjects out of the public record, at which she was eminently successful. (See the aforementioned article for particulars.) Chandra Levy was no ordinary intern as developed by this writer in a series of articles. (See list of related articles below available on request to [EMAIL PROTECTED]) By education, training, temperament and resulting from her duties at the Bureau of Prisons, she was in a position to have gained knowledge on one or both of these subjects that made her dangerous to powerful people resulting in her abduction and presumed death. In this writers opinion, Condits political career was already irretrievable before the Chung interview, which may explain why Condit went along with such an obvious trashing of his credibility. On the other hand, he may have been made an offer he couldnt refuse, either join in the misdirection of public attention or join Chandra. The day after the ABC interview, Democrat support for Condit started to crumble beginning with the statement of the House Minority leader made Friday morning. That was followed by criticism from Democrat Rep. Cooley from Condits neighboring district in California. The minority leader implied that Condit would be removed from his sensitive position on the House Permanent Select House Committee on Intelligence. Expect calls for his resignation from congress to increase from both sides of the aisle. So what is the likely result of the Condit interviews on TV and in magazines? As counter-attacks are mounted by those maligned by Condit in the interviews, his credibility will sink to even lower

Anthropology, psychology, sociology, and genetics are all turning up results good, hard, replicable scientific results whose broad tendency is to prove that human nature is much more like what conservatives have always said it was like, than it is like what leftists have believed. Every time one of these results escapes from academia into the awareness of the general public, it is greeted with shrieks of horror and obloquy by the leftist establishment (remember The Bell Curve?) and the researchers who uncovered it are tarred, feathered, and run out of the public square with cries of "racist!" ringing in their ears. Those results are piling up mightily behind the dam of orthodoxy, though, and the guardians of that dam are running out of fingers to stick in the cracks. Now, it's questionable brother Tony and marginal brother Huge duking it out and rolling around the floor with a marginal/questionable character who broke into their vacation home, successfully knocking Tony off the couch upon which he was allegedly rolling around with the man's girlfriend. This, mind you, was after a night of drinking at the local bar. The next day, Tony, sporting a broken nose, bragged he got the better of neighbor/intruder Daniel Coyne, even though it took both Tony and tons-of-fun Hugh together to give him one shiner, several scrapes on his legs and chest, and a dislocated shoulder. The day after that, Tony bragged to the papers that he was just sorry he didn't have a gun handy so he could have killed Coyne instead of just beating him, or crushing him or whatever the hell they did to him. Now we know why his sister, the U.S. senator sometimes from New York, is not anti-gun. She'd be in court defending her brothers on murder charges every five minutes and wouldn't have time to tend to her wayward husband and/or job in the Senate. Some family! I'm surprised they even have a home on a lake instead of a place on wheels in the Ozarks. They should be let out only to appear on The Jerry Springer Show. DiLorenzo The most absurd myth about Abraham Lincoln to emerge from the Claremont Institute, where such myth-making has apparently become a cottage industry, is the notion that Lincoln showed us all how to oppose the culture of death, as Pope John Paul calls the abortion culture. That's how Seth Leibsohn of Empower America (Jack Kemp's outfit) put it in a recent Institute publication. Pro-life champion Joseph Sobran breaks my heart, wrote Leibsohn, when he criticizes Lincoln, as he has done in numerous columns in LewRockwell.com. This, and so many other statements made by Claremont Institute scholars about Lincoln, is a sheer absurdity. Lincoln wanted a bloody war and the reason he wanted it had little or nothing to do with slavery. As he stated over and over again, his overriding objective was to destroy once and for all the system of federalism and states' rights that the founding fathers had created as a check on the centralizing tendencies of the state. He didn't put it this way, of course, but instead used the deceptive language of saving the Union. But holding any union together at gunpoint destroys it by destroying its voluntary and consensual nature. Lincoln only saved the Union in a geographical sense. Before Fort Sumter the Confederate government had commissioners in Washington, DC, who were prepared to offer to pay for all federal property in the Southern states and to assume the South's share of the public debt. Lincoln rebuffed them. Napoleon III of France offered to mediate the dispute and he, too, was ignored. Lincoln wanted a war. He cleverly maneuvered the South into firing the first shot at Fort Sumter, where no one was hurt or killed. Even though he had sent warships to the fort, they did not return fire because their mission to draw an attack had already been accomplished. After Fort Sumter Lincoln thanked Naval Commander Gustavus Fox for helping him orchestrate the attack and to generate Northern support for a war. In what has to be the biggest political miscalculation in all of American history, Lincoln believed that his war would last only a few months, after which he and the Republican Party could implement their 1860 platform of protectionist tariffs, nationalized banking, and corporate welfare for the railroad industry without opposition. Being unfamiliar with military matters and personnel, he failed to anticipate the likes of generals Robert E. Lee, Stonewall Jackson, J.E.B. Stuart, and Nathan Bedford Forrest. Lincoln's war ended up costing 620,000 battlefield deaths along with the death of some 50,000 Southern civilians, including thousands of slaves who perished in the federal army's bombardment of Southern cities and because of its devastation of the Southern economy. By 1865 the Lincoln government had killed one out of every four Southern white males between the ages of 20 and 40. To put these numbers in perspective, standardizing for today's population of 280 million, that would be roughly the equivalent of 5 million deaths about 100 times the number of Americans who died in the ten-year Vietnam War. Lincoln famously micromanaged the war effort. Historian James McPherson writes of how he spent more time in the War Department's telegraph office than anywhere else, and spent 41 days in the field with the Army of the Potomac. He was fully in charge as the commander in chief, and orchestrated the mass killing for four years. His favorite general, Ulysses S. Grant, was made top commander of the army because of his willingness to send tens of thousands of men into a slaughter pen, as he did in the Battle of the Wilderness and elsewhere. From the very beginning, Lincoln's war strategy involved waging war on Southern civilians despite the fact that such tactics were denounced by the Geneva Convention of 1863 and even by Lincoln's own military code (the Lieber Code, named after its author, Columbia University law professor Francis Lieber). Federal soldiers plundered and pillaged their way through the South for four years. In 1861 federal commanders began taking civilians hostage and sometimes shooting them in retaliation for Confederate guerrilla attacks. On Saturday night, Yaniv and Sharon Ben-Shalom of Ofarim and Sharon's brother, Tzion Sabiri were murdered and two children were wounded when their car was ambushed by terrorists on a road just north of Jerusalem, near Modi'in. On Thursday night, two brothers, Tzviel and Matanel Meshulam, were standing on their family porch in the Beit Schneerson building in Hebron, adjacent to Beit Hadassah, when suddenly sniper fire rained down upon them from the overlooking Abu Sneineh Hills. Matanel, 21, an IDF soldier, was shot in his hand. The same bullet also hit Tzviel, 11, in the chest; he is listed in moderate/stable condition after the bullet miraculously missed hitting vital organs. IDF forces responded a few hours later by moving onto the PA/PLO-controlled hilltop, destroying two abandoned buildings that were used to launch the shooting at the Meshulam family and many other shooting attacks. The two houses were sources of Arab gunfire on Jewish neighborhoods in Hebron for the past year. Deputy Chief of Staff Moshe Ya'alon explained Friday morning that the strike into Abu Sneineh neighborhood had been limited and was carried out in order to solve a local problem. They will not succeed in breaking us. :: RECORD NUMBER OF OLIM THIS WEEK: 240 youngsters from the FSU (Former Soviet Union) arrived in Israel this week as part of the Jewish Agency's program to absorb young people. This is the first group in the Selah (students before parents) program to arrive in Israel this year. Over the next few days 900 youngsters from the FSU will be arriving in Israel to participate in the Jewish Agency's Selah program. This week, 1225 olim arrived in Israel from all parts of the world - the largest number to arrive in one week since the beginning of the year. MEDIUM RARE By Jim Rarey August 25, 2001 CONDIT INTERVIEW - MISSION ACCOMPLISHED Almost all observers and pundits agree that Thursday nightâs interview with Connie Chung on ABC was a public relations disaster for Gary Condit. How could that have happened to a seasoned campaigner who has been in politics for thirty years and had the benefit of expert (and expensive) advice from legal and public relations professionals? Panelists on both network and cable outlet television shows, from across the political spectrum, seem to have arrived at a consensus explanation. First, they postulate (some from alleged inside information), there was a conflict between advice from the lawyers and the PR people and the lawyers prevailed. With this the author can agree. Secondly, they give us two options. Either Conditâs legal team (headed by lead attorney Abbe Lowell) was grossly incompetent, or Condit ignored their advice and tried to do it his way. This writer rejects both of those choices. Abbe Lowell is regarded among his peers in elite Washington legal circles as one of the premiere attorneys at combining legal strategy with PR spin, one of the reasons he was chosen to defend Bill Clinton at the former presidentâs Senate impeachment trial. From Conditâs mechanical and repetitive non-answers to some of Chungâs questions, it was obvious he was regurgitating memorized statements from a script. It is reasonable to assume that script was prepared by the legal team, which had advised him not to admit to anything. Following that advice, Condit appeared to be calling a number of people liars including the D.C. police, Mrs. Levy, Chandraâs aunt, Anne Marie Smith, Joline McKay and Chandra herself. The result may have been a nearly complete destruction of Conditâs credibility in the publicâs perception casting doubt on his clear and unequivocal denials of having anything to do with Chandraâs disappearance. That may have been the exact result Conditâs legal team desired. In the authorâs article of August 18th entitled Levy/Condit â Amazing Coincidences the following statement was made, This writer does not believe that Condit and his staff requested these lawyers. They were most likely assigned there as a team with a containment strategy to ensure that no mention is made of the CIA/drug and OKC bombing (Timothy McVeigh) subjects in connection with Chandra Levyâs disappearance. That statement was prompted by the authorâs belief that Chandraâs disappearance likely has nothing to do with her affair with the congressman but with dangerous knowledge she acquired on her intern job at the Bureau of Prisons. For this writer, that theory was given added credence with the presence of attorney Beth Wilkinson on the Condit legal team. Wilkinson was involved with the prosecution in both the Noreiga (CIA/drug connection) and Timothy McVeigh (OKC bombing) trials. Her apparent assignment was to keep any reference to government involvement in both subjects out of the public record, at which she was eminently successful. (See the aforementioned article for particulars.) Chandra Levy was no ordinary intern as developed by this writer in a series of articles. (See list of related articles below available on request to [EMAIL PROTECTED]) By education, training, temperament and resulting from her duties at the Bureau of Prisons, she was in a position to have gained knowledge on one or both of these subjects that made her dangerous to powerful people resulting in her abduction and presumed death. In this writerâs opinion, Conditâs political career was already irretrievable before the Chung interview, which may explain why Condit went along with such an obvious trashing of his credibility. On the other hand, he may have been made an offer he couldnât refuse, either join in the misdirection of public attention or join Chandra. The day after the ABC interview, Democrat support for Condit started to crumble beginning with the statement of the House Minority leader made Friday morning. That was followed by criticism from Democrat Rep. Cooley from Conditâs neighboring district in California. The minority leader implied that Condit would be removed from his sensitive position on the House Permanent Select House Committee on Intelligence. Expect calls for his resignation from congress to increase from both sides of the aisle. So what is the likely result of the Condit interviews on TV and in magazines? As counter-attacks are mounted by those maligned by Condit in the interviews, his credibility will sink to even lower depths. The public will suspect (without any evidence) that he was somehow involved in Chandraâs disappearance. Attorney General John Ashcroft, in a letter to the N.R.A.'s Institute for Legislative Action. Because of Ashcroft's deviation from politically correct dogma, Common Cause and the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence have filed an ethics complaint against the Attorney General, claiming that his interpretation directly contradicts the stated position of his client, the United States of America, on the meaning of the Second Amendment. Their complaint specifically refers to the case of United States v. Emerson, now on appeal in the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, in which the Clinton administration explicitly denied that such an individual right exists. In a press release announcing the ethics complaint, Common Cause president Scott Harshbarger proclaimed, What's at stake here is the integrity of the U.S. Department of Justice. In their complaint, Common Cause and the Brady Center relied on an opinion by Sam Dash, that Ashcroft's conduct was an act of disloyalty to his client, the United States. That would be the same Sam Dash who during Clinton's impeachment resigned as ethics advisor to Independent Counsel Starr, and publicly criticized Starr for accepting the invitation to testify before the House Judiciary Committee -- was that an act of loyalty to Starr? Apparently, consistency with a past attempt to subvert liberty is more important than loyalty to the Constitution and to an oath of office to uphold the Constitution. (I believe it is clear that the Constitution protects the private ownership of firearms for lawful purposes. .when I was sworn as Attorney General of the United States, I took an oath to uphold and defend the Constitution. That responsibility applies to all parts of the Constitution, including the Second Amendment. -- Attorney General John Ashcroft) In July, the Violence Policy Center (VPC) issued a report titled Shot Full of Holes, Deconstructing John Ashcroft's Second Amendment. The ultimate goal of gun ban extremists is to totally disarm all private individuals -- obviously believing that violent crime is the fault of honest people owning guns. To accomplish this ultimate goal, gun banners believe that they must eliminate (or in VPC's terminology, deconstruct, the term fashionable in academia which means using apparently logical arguments to prove that black is really white) the Second Amendment. The VPC says that Ashcroft's letter is an astonishingly inadequate piece of legal reasoning and an exemplar of wishful, and at times bizarre, revisionist history. A sign of the desperation of the VPC is their insulting attempt to equate The NRA and gun criminals (the VPC apparently sees no difference between the two) who will seek to have the Second Amendment incorporated against the states.. As though gun criminals care about the Constitutional doctrine of incorporation. But the VPC's reliance on deconstructing Ashcroft and the Second Amendment depends on a compound of fundamentally flawed ideas about the nature of, and a massive expansion of the legitimate power of, government; and as such carries implications that go far beyond the firearms issue and go to the very essence of our individual liberty. The argument of the gun banners is simple: Without the Second Amendment, there is no individual right to keep and bear arms. Thus deconstruct the Second Amendment, and the individual right disappears. Given the wealth -- and remarkable unanimity -- of the expressions of intent by the Founders of this country and by their contemporaries, as well as philosophical discourses on the inherent right of individual self defense extending back fifteen hundred years to Justinian's Digest of Roman Law, twisting the Second Amendment into a collective right only, rather than an individual right, and nullifying the age-old right of self defense, is a monumental and ultimately futile task. For even if the gun banners succeed in hoodwinking a majority of the public with their collectivist interpretation of the Second Amendment (a real possibility given the propaganda and the lack of discussion about the requisites of individual liberty in education today), and even if they succeed in convincing a majority of the people that they have no right to defend themselves or their families or homes against criminal attack, the attempt to eliminate the Second Amendment as a barrier to total civilian disarmament (with government alone retaining a monopoly of force) is still fundamentally flawed. He never represented the majority of opinion in his state, only those with enough ability to go to the polls. The Helms retirement portends significant difficulties for the future of the Republican Party and the success of President Bush's administration. PROPHET, PATRIOT, PLAYER, OR PHONY? In November of 1990, I received a call from Bill Hamilton, the owner of the Inslaw Corporation. Inslaw was, at that time, involved in a nasty legal fight with the Department of Justice over allegations that the Department of Justice had stolen Inslaw's proprietary software called Promis[e] One of the chief witnesses in the case was a mysterious genius named Michael J. Riconosciuto. Riconosciuto was preparing a declaration to submit in the Inslaw case; he was receiving threats from Department of Justice officials if he filed his statement with the court. Hamilton was aware that I had researched the Riconosciuto family connections in the State of California. He wanted background information on his star witness. In January of 1991, Riconosciuto filed his declaration and he was immediately arrested and jailed on drug charges in the State of Washington. The prosecutor in this drug case was Michael T. Hurley whose name also surfaces in the downing of Pan Am 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland in December of 1988. Hamilton wanted to know if I would accept collect calls from Riconosciuto while he remained in jail in Washington. I told him I would and so began, what Riconosciuto calls, the great adventure Riconosciuto asked me if I had a fax machine; I replied in the affirmative and he requested that I keep it fully loaded with paper. The first fax I received simply stated, Welcome to the adventure. The second fax was signed by Ray Lavas and contained a fax number to respond to if I had questions. Over the next four months my fax machine spat out over 2500 pages of documents independently confirming what Riconosciuto told me in many tape recorded conversations. Reporters dealing with a wide array of subjects called me constantly, telling me that Riconosciuto had asked them to call. Suddenly I was receiving a fast track education on satanic cults, small arms trafficking, the covert use of Indian reservations nationwide, bio-mass burning plants, Trojan horses installed in computers, the Nixon/Reagan/Bush mafia, money laundering through the national HUD agency, the CIA/mafia bust out of savings and loans, sexual slaves used to compromise power mongers, Vietnam drug money laundered to CIA banks, fuel explosives, [and] chemical and biological warfare weapons. When fellow reporters questioned the reality of Riconosciuto's statements, I would convey their doubt. Within hours more documents would arrive that would verify the truth of his allegations. When Riconosciuto made allegations that the United States had developed a gene specific biological warfare weapon that could be used to eliminate specific races, he was laughed at by the few reporters still contacting him. By this time few journalists could afford his collect calls from jail; fewer still considered the story important. Most correspondents considered him crazy or a pathological liar. They had bought the government line. No one thought his story about biological weapons was true. Then my fax machine spat out a two page letter dated January 20, 1983 addressed to Dr. Harry Fair of Tactical Technology in Arlington, Virginia. The letter was signed by CIA operative John P. Nichols (Who is Nichols? Click p. 1, Click p.2, Click p.3.) and was on the letterhead of Cabazon Arms, a joint venture between the small Cabazon Band of Mission Indians and the giant Wackenhut Security firm of Coral Gables, Florida often called the CIA's CIA. In page one, paragraph two, the following statement: On February 15, 1983, I will be forwarding to you a unique list of agents and production techniques related to biological warfare. As an investment, the metal may have been horribly out of fashion for the past decade, but with world economies continuing to slide, gold could be about to stage a revival. There are already signs that sentiment may be changing. The big gold miners, Barrick, Newmont, and AngloGold, have this year been among the better performing stocks on the New York Stock Exchange. So far this re-rating has not fed through to the physical price of gold, which remains stubbornly stuck in a $255 to $285 per ounce (L 177 to L 198) trading range. But some metals analysts believe it could soon break through the $300 barrier and climb to $350. Since the late 1980s, when gold hit $800 an ounce, the price has been in steady decline. It has suffered from the serial dumping of gold reserves by central governments and the International Monetary Fund in favour of bonds and other financial instruments. The physical price may have fallen but, fortunately, consumers, particularly in India, have not lost their appetite for gold. Jewellery demand -- which accounts for 85% of the market -- has risen 35% over the past decade. Bobby Godsell, chairman of the World Gold Council, says it is hard to find another sector where retail demand has been as robust. For 5,000 years gold has enjoyed the status of a store of value, but when measured against the surge in equities over the past decade the metal has lost its sheen. In the more sober economic landscape we are now seeing, gold could again recover its place in investors' portfolios. There are other reasons why it could stage a revival. Of all metal markets, the one for gold remains the most fragmented. However, there are signs that it is starting to consolidate, which will result in producers, refiners, traders, and fabricators working more closely. Ultimately, this could lead to two of the big producers, AngloGold and Barrick, merging, which would create a L 7.5 billion powerhouse. Ross Norman, an analyst at TheBullionDesk.com, says such consolidation has already taken place with platinum, where four producers now dominate 90% of the market. He believes gold needs to go the same way and forge a closer relationship with its customers. On top of this, he says there should be an increase in the budget of the World Gold Council, whose role is to promote jewellery and investment demand. This year it has doubled to about $50m but still remains woefully inadequate, at just 0.15% of the value of gold produced each year. New industrial applications need to be found for the metal and there are signs that this is starting to happen. Possible uses being explored include using gold as a catalyst in the filters of cigarettes to mitigate the harmful toxins in tobacco. If these take off, the central banks that are still sitting on 32,000 tonnes of gold will immediately stop jettisoning more reserves. Today they claim that the funds trustees the U.S. departments of the Interior and Treasury have bilked them out of $10 billion-plus. A gang of politicians and bureaucrats may have stolen $10 billion from the poorest Americans, and a growing number of people think nobody gives a damn. The official excuses for hiding federal records proving this huge theft include claims that a computer system, which to date has cost taxpayers tens of millions of dollars, does not function properly; that paper records cannot be brought to court from government warehouses because of contamination by the rodent-borne hantavirus; and that relevant documents and ledgers known to be in government possession were destroyed variously in suspicious fires and/or intentionally shredded. All of which is why American Indians are not receiving income earned on their property from a trust fund begun more than 100 years ago under the General Allotment Act of 1887, which historical documents confirm was intended to eliminate the Indian way of life and provide financial independence to integrate them into the mainstream culture an Indian version of the Reconstructions 40 acres and a mule. To fund this adventure in cultural eugenics more than 11 million acres of land were divided among the individual American Indians but placed in trust to the federal government, with income generated from the leasing of oil, mineral, timber or grazing rights to be paid from the trust to the Indians. The authorities of that era did not think that American Indians had the education or experience to manage these properties or the substantial monies that would come from leasing their lands. Congress decided to have the monies held in a trust to be overseen by various federal agencies, including the departments of the Interior and Treasury. In theory, monies generated from the leased lands would be distributed to the landholders, making the Indians financially independent. In practice, todays 300,000 American Indians and their families claim to have been bilked out of an estimated $10 billion. No one denies that the money is unaccounted for. Finding it is another matter. Eloise Cobell, a banker from the Blackfeet Reservation in northwest Montana, and four other American Indians filed a class-action lawsuit against the United States in 1996. They sought to account for and recover all the monies due and owing from the revenues of the leased lands, based on historical records and data kept throughout the years. But the trustees the departments of the Interior and Treasury have been unable and/or unwilling to produce the requested records, going to bizarre extremes to withhold information confirming the huge Indian claims. Washington lawyer Dennis Gingold, the lead attorney on the case since it was filed, tells Insight: Were talking about tens of billions of dollars that cannot be accounted for especially disturbing given the fact that the trust was forced on the Native Americans at gunpoint. The government told the Indians, Were gonna take care of your property. Its the equivalent of me pointing a gun at your head and saying to you today, Give me the keys to your house and your car and your bank-account information. You will remain the beneficial owner, so dont worry because Im going to handle this exclusively in your best interest. According to Gingold, The government has handled this lawsuit as badly as theyve managed the trust account with total disdain toward the beneficiaries. There is no single situation that comes close to this one in which a trustee has so abused the trust beneficiaries for so many years. How bad is it? That depends on who is being asked. Take for example the Department of the Interior (DOI), whose job it is to maintain the historical data on the trust lands, ensure accurate accounting and then turn any monies collected from the leased land over to the Treasury Department. Because of shoddy record-keeping and a financial-management system that is not integrated, the DOI explained to the court, it cannot provide data for an audit. In 1991, the General Accounting Office (GAO) reported that the DOIs Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) had spent more than $21 million during a five- year period attempting to reconcile and certify Indian trust accounts. A decade later there still has been no reconciliation of these trust accounts despite the expenditure of an estimated $30 million to $40 million on a computerized financial-management scheme called the Trust Asset Accounting Management System (TAAMS), which doesnt work. A memo to NSW police officers warns that hand guns seized during a major investigation of weapons-trafficking can fire up to 20 rounds in seconds. A police commissioner has alerted The Australian's Dossier team to the ease of skirting Australian gun laws with imported parts, sometimes as small as an envelope, stating: You don't need too much imagination to import these things into the country. Mr Whidett told The Australian some gun parts were now plastic, making detection even harder. There are a lot of counterfeit firearms made in Asia of popular weapons that the Americans churn out. They are probably not as sophisticated, but they kill nevertheless, Mr Whidett said. The NCA's concerns are echoed by NSW Crime Commission chairman Phillip Bradley, who said gun-smuggling was becoming more financially attractive. The mark-up is such that it is more profitable than drugs and less risky because of the penalties involved, he said. Last week's warning in NSW Police Weekly said Glock pistols were seized during the investigation into gun trafficking. The pistols had a slide with buttons inserted in the end -- holding down the lock that stops the weapon firing automatically. They'll put 14 rounds into you in two seconds, one senior officer said. -Caveat Lector- This is a very good article as far as it goes. I would question the figure of only 50,000 civilian deaths, however, as that seems only a fraction of what actually occurred. I believe this must not be counting the deaths from starvation and exposure to the elements and lack of medical care. The cemeteries say more women and children died during those years than men killed but that is confusing because of battlefield burials, etc. I live very near Paint Rock and this is verified by local history but was not considered unusual. Rather, it was normal and standard practice for tithe region and troops involved. Other documented atrocities include the death of Robert Scott the founder of Scottsboro with its own legal legacy by his being forced to pull a wagon load of US soldiers as punishment for not having horses for them. He was whipped with a horse whip and made to pull the wagon until the elderly man dropped dead amid jeers of the US contingent on board the wagon. This was done in public and full view of the residents of the area. No need for secrecy at the time for it was standard fare throughout the South. Also, no account of atrocities against the Southern civilian population is complete without quoting U.S. Gen Butler's legalization of the rape of the women of New Orleans, both black and white and what happened when the adult women were hidden by their families, etc. The gang rape of little girls, legally, is well documented and a part of the big cover up of an era that has been completely rewritten by 'historians' to conceal what really happened. Such heroes! I think this contributed mightily to black people staying in the South following the War of Northern Aggression for they saw for themselves the true face of those waging war to 'free' them. Lincoln rebuffed them. Napoleon III of France offered to mediate the dispute and he, too, was ignored. Lincoln wanted a war. He cleverly maneuvered the South into firing the first shot at Fort Sumter, where no one was hurt or killed. Even though he had sent warships to the fort, they did not return fire because their mission to draw an attack had already been accomplished. After Fort Sumter Lincoln thanked Naval Commander Gustavus Fox for helping him orchestrate the attack and to generate Northern support for a war. From the very outset, the public was falsely led to believe a multiracial spiritual community was largely comprised of gun-running rednecks steeped in violent apocalypse theology and martial rhetoric. As if to further darken the picture, thinly veiled allegations of child abuse and cultic phenomenon were widely circulated on television and in the mainstream press. This egregious use of what media analysts refer to as negative framing would seal the fate of the controversial 7th Day Adventist sect when it was deemed politically expendable by Washington officials. Evidence suggests that these unsubstantiated claims which continue to shade our perception of the events at Mt. Carmel can be attributed to a small cadre of para-political watchdog groups. There is nothing intrinsically wrong with citizens banding together to expose government waste, combat police brutality, or warn the public of faulty or dangerous products. However, in the lucrative realm of public policy activism lurk a number of pro-government advocacy groups whose very existence rests upon the notion that cult activities, political extremism or some other unnamed evil constitutes a dangerous threat to state power. In order to identify the alleged thought criminals in our midst, operatives aligned with these private surveillance networks infiltrate unconventional spiritual or religious movements, maintain files on American citizens, and work closely with both media and law enforcement to target individuals and organizations whose beliefs run counter to establishmentarian beliefs. In essence, these ersatz defenders of human rights act as de facto spokesmen for our emergent surveillance society. It's COINTELPRO redux, only this time with help from a network of dubious, yet-well compensated agents. One such organization is the Cult Awareness Network (CAN). Although the legendary cult-busters have since disappeared from the public spotlight after suffering a ruinous civil judgement, the once prominent watchdog group still enjoy an infamous place among WACO researchers. Indeed, the first stirrings of the Koresh investigation began when a CAN affiliate named Rick Ross allegedly deprogrammed various former Davidians and contacted BATF officials with lurid tales of child abuse and illegal machine guns. CAN officials would subsequently advise BATF officials prior to the ill-fated February raid and act as flacks for the state once the lengthy standoff began. Ross and CAN officials.helped shape the public image of the Davidians during the siege, presenting their theories on doomsday cults to a baffled public through the corporate media writes author Jim Redden (Snitch Culture, 2001). This would include CAN President Patricia Ryan's suggestion to the Houston Chronicle that trigger-happy federal cops should use any means including lethal force to arrest David Koresh. Few bothered to question the credibility of an organization which has flung the cult smear at Catholic monasteries, yoga groups, and even Karate classes! Instead, the public recoiled at the stunning accusations leveled against the besieged religious group. Meanwhile, far below the media radar, longtime critics of CAN noticed a familiar modus operandi. Citing outspoken CAN opponent Dr. Gordon Melton, Carol Moore notes that the organization has found two successful methods of disrupting groups: first, false anonymous charges of child abuse and second, kidnapping and 'deprogramming' members. (The Davidian Massacre, 1995). In the aftermath of the tragic conflagration, Ross would justify the fatal tank attack in a self-serving letter to former Attorney General Janet Reno. One thing is sure, David Koresh was an absolute authoritarian cult leader who exercised total control over his followers/victims. In the final analysis, he decided to end the conflict. However, Ross would later be subjected to the withering cricism of Princeton University religious scholar Nancy T. Ammerman in a report prepared for the Department of Justice which challenged CAN's ersatz expertise: Although these people often call themselves 'cult experts,' they are certainly not recognized as such by the academic community. The activities of CAN are seen.as a danger to religious liberty, and deprogramming tactics have been increasingly found to fall outside the law. Poole Introduction In a highly restricted room inside the Department of Justice Building in Washington D.C. resides a federal court that meets in complete secrecy. Even though the rulings this secret court issues may result in criminal charges, convictions and prison sentences for US citizens, their writs and rulings are permanently sealed from review by those accused of crimes and from any substantive civilian review. This is the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court (FISC), which considers surveillance and physical search orders from the Department of Justice and US intelligence agencies. During the 20-year tenure of the FISC the court has received over 10,000 applications for covert surveillance and physical searches. To date, not a single application has been denied. The Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA)1 was passed in 1978, during the days of increased terrorist activity against American citizens around the world. The Cold War and American involvement in the Middle East raised fears both about increased spying on US government, military and business facilities and personnel and about terrorists planning attacks in the US and against Americans overseas. In this atmosphere, federal law enforcement and intelligence administrators requested Congress to increase surveillance powers to combat these growing trends. The FISA statute was also a regulative response to the allegations of domestic spying by federal law enforcement and intelligence agencies during the 1960s and 70s. However, with the FISA legislation passed, the process was cloaked in absolute secrecy. While few Americans are even aware of the courts existence, the FISC routinely hears applications for surveillance and physical searches from federal law enforcement and intelligence agencies. The FISA court issues more surveillance and physical search orders than the entire federal judiciary combined. Many constitutional scholars and civil liberty advocates note that the overly broad powers of the FISA statute and court authority are in direct violation of the Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches and general warrants. With such a powerful weapon against citizens Constitutional liberties, many opponents of the court argue that Congress should conduct extensive oversight of the court. But congressional oversight of the FISA court is virtually non-existent. The only information required by FISA to be provided to congressional oversight committees is the number of surveillance orders approved each calendar year and brief semi-annual reports. The entire 1997 report on the FISCs activity totaled two paragraphs. But what those brief annual reports do chronicle is the exponential rate of growth of surveillance orders issued by the FISC. Recent criminal cases proceeding from evidence gathered by FISA surveillance orders have raised many questions regarding the constitutionality of FISA searches and surveillance and the assumption of enormous powers by federal law enforcement and intelligence agencies. Defense attorneys for those charged for crimes with evidence gathered under a FISA order maintain that the FISA court stands as a court of last resort for zealous prosecutors unable to obtain a criminal indictment from other federal courts. Some of the orders approved by the FISC have proven to be government fishing expeditions aimed at circumventing citizens Fourth Amendment protections against unwarranted searches. Origins of the Court With the collapse of the Nixon Administration following the Watergate scandal, the Senate Select Committee to Study Governmental Operations with Respect to Intelligence Activities (otherwise known as the Church Committee) discovered that the federal government had been engaged in widespread domestic surveillance for several decades. In response, several members of Congress set about to devise a plan to limit the surveillance power of federal law enforcement and intelligence agencies. In the wake of the subsequent public outrage and out of fear warrantless surveillance would be outlawed altogether, President Ford supported the FISA bill to limit the inherent authority of the President to conduct warrantless surveillance in the interest of national security. Prior to that time, most presidents claimed to have implicit constitutional authority to approve warrantless surveillance for national security purposes under the executive branchs Constitutional power to conduct foreign policy. But that power had been used by government agencies to justify domestic spying against law-abiding anti-war demonstrators and many of the leaders of the civil rights movement of the late 1960s despite First and Fourth Amendment protections prohibiting such activity. -Caveat Lector- August 26, 2001 Researchers Say Embryos in Labs Are Not Available By GINA KOLATA f scientists want to develop new supplies of embryonic stem cells, they may have to take the bold and controversial step of creating human embryos expressly for research, many leading fertility experts say. Tens of thousands of embryos are frozen at fertility centers, and a widespread assumption in the debate over stem cell research has been that scientists can use them. But in clinics around the country, embryologists and doctors tell the same story: almost every embryo is spoken for. The vast majority of couples use their frozen embryos, or plan to use them, in attempts at pregnancy. It may be that embryos will become available if there are concerted efforts to encourage couples to donate them. But so far, very few couples have agreed to do so. An alternative, creating human embryos and nurturing them solely for experiments that will destroy them leaves even many supporters of the research deeply uneasy. The harsh truth about the status of the frozen embryos changes the debate, said Dr. Thomas Pool, scientific director of the Fertility Center of San Antonio. If the embryos already existed, were unwanted byproducts of in vitro fertilization, and were never going to be used to make babies, Dr. Pool said, people could ask, Could I save them and do some good with them? That was a warm and fuzzy way for people to get around the question of making them, he added. It's an easy way to not have to come back to the salient question: What are these things that we make in I.V.F. labs? This conundrum does not arise in the area where President Bush has proposed allowing federally financed research. He would permit work to go ahead on existing lines of stem cells Mr. Bush says there are 60 lines, while others say there may be as few as a dozen usable ones. Rather, the issue comes up when scientists try to develop new stem cells, abroad or with private money. Some say this is necessary because the existing lines are insufficient and may not be safe for human use. Most of these human cells were exposed to mouse cells while being coaxed to grow in the laboratory, to prevent them from developing prematurely. This has raised the question of whether mouse cells could transmit viruses to human patients. There are no national data on the number of frozen embryos. But the Society for Assisted Reproductive Technology says that most of the approximately 400 American clinics that offer in vitro fertilization also freeze embryos. The frozen embryos are one to five days old and consist of one to 120 cells. They are less than three-thousandths of an inch in diameter. Some clinics routinely ask patients if they want to donate embryos for research. Others the majority, fertility experts say do not ask. One clinic that asks is the Institute for Reproductive Medicine and Science of St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, N.J., one of the nation's largest fertility centers. Embryologists there have frozen 11,402 embryos since August 1995, from a total of 1,595 patients. Many used their embryos. One woman gave hers up for adoption, which was privately arranged. That left 6,284 in storage, from 1,006 patients. Of those patients, 191 signed or said they would sign a form directing that their embryos be discarded. But only 22 patients signed or indicated a desire to sign a form allowing their embryos to be used for research, although Dr. John Garrisi, the chief embryologist there, said that he was certain many who no longer wanted their embryos would donate them for research if he asked them personally. Patients at the Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine of Eastern Virginia Medical School, another large center, are also asked to donate embryos for research. Embryologists there froze about 15,000 embryos in the last 15 years, two-thirds of which were used by the couples that owned them. About 200 embryos might be available for research according to forms signed by patients, said Dr. William Gibbons, a reproductive endocrinologist there. And that, he said, might not be enough to generate any stem cells. Dr. Zev Rosenwaks, who heads a large fertility center at the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, said that his patients, too, almost always keep their embryos. But, Dr. Rosenwaks said, over many many years, about 100 to 200 couples agreed to donate embryos for research. That could be enough for stem cell research, he said, although he is not doing such work. Boston I.V.F., a group of fertility clinics based in Waltham, Mass., recently agreed to supply Harvard researchers with frozen embryos for stem cell research. Dr. Michael Alper, the group's medical director, estimated that the clinics had several thousand frozen embryos and that a small percentage of patients had indicated they no longer needed theirs. It is early in the morning, and the well-dressed young African-American man driving his Ford Explorer on I-75 sees the blue lights of the Georgia State Patrol car behind him. The officer pulls behind the sport utility vehicle and the young man's heart begins to sink. He is on his way to Atlanta for a job interview. The stop, ostensibly for speeding, should not take long, he reasons, as the highway patrol officer walks cautiously toward the Explorer. But instead of simply asking for a driver's license and writing a speeding ticket, the trooper calls for backup. Another trooper soon arrives, his blue lights flashing as well. The young man is told to leave his vehicle, as the troopers announce their intention to search it. Hey, where did you get the money for something like this? one trooper asks mockingly while he starts the process of going through every inch of the Explorer. Soon, an officer pulls off an inside door panel. More dismantling of the vehicle follows. They say they are looking for drugs, but in the end find nothing. After ticketing the driver for speeding, the two officers casually drive off. Sitting in his now-trashed SUV, the young man weeps in his anger and humiliation. Unmotivated searches like this are daily occurrences on our nation's highways, and blacks and white liberals have been decrying the situation for several years. Many conservatives, on the other hand, dismiss such complaints as the exaggerations of hypersensitive minorities. Or they say that if traffic cops do in fact pull over and search the vehicles of African Americans disproportionately, then such racial profiling is an unfortunate but necessary component of modern crime fighting. The incident described above should give pause to those who think that racial profiling is simply a bogus issue cooked up by black leaders such as Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson to use as another publicity tool. One of us teaches in an MBA program that enrolls a fairly large number of African Americans, and the story comes from one of our students. Indeed, during class discussions, all of the black men and many of the black women told stories of having their late-model cars pulled over and searched for drugs. While incidents of racial profiling are widely deplored today, there is little said about the actual root cause of the phenomenon. The standard explanations for racial profiling focus on institutional racism, but that idea runs contrary to the sea change in social attitudes that has taken place over the last four decades. On the contrary, the practice of racial profiling grows from a trio of very tangible sources, all attributable to the War on Drugs, that $37 billion annual effort on the part of local, state, and federal lawmakers and cops to stop the sale and use of illicit substances. The sources include the difficulty in policing victimless crimes in general and the resulting need for intrusive police techniques; the greater relevancy of this difficulty given the intensification of the drug war since the 1980s; and the additional incentive that asset forfeiture laws give police forces to seize money and property from suspects. Since the notion of scaling back, let alone stopping, the drug war is too controversial for most politicians to handle, it's hardly surprising that its role in racial profiling should go largely unacknowledged. The Practice of Racial Profiling Although there is no single, universally accepted definition of racial profiling, we're using the term to designate the practice of stopping and inspecting people who are passing through public places -- such as drivers on public highways or pedestrians in airports or urban areas -- where the reason for the stop is a statistical profile of the detainee's race or ethnicity. Photo from LewisNews.com On Friday August 24 Jim Bell, author of Assassination Politics was sentenced to 10 years in prison on one count of interstate stalking of a federal agent and one count of using facilities of interstate commerce (i.e., a fax machine) for interstate stalking by Federal Ninth District Judge Jack E. Tanner. During his trial, Bell had argued that he was using widely available means to investigate the backgrounds of IRS and ATF agents. Judge Tanner was not persuaded; he sentenced Bell to the maximum possible time allowable under US Code 18:2261. After a flurry of motions to dismiss the case for reasons varying from judicial prejudice to fraud by the court were denied, Bell's attorney Robert Leen addressed the pre-sentencing report. A normal practice in federal trials and many state criminal trials, the pre-sentencing report recommends a sentence depending on a number of factors. A defendant is assigned a level based on the crime and this level is adjusted upward if other factors are present. Leen argued that the factors that were applied were inappropriate or not present. Two of the factors might be of specific interest to Sierra Times readers. Using internet search engines to find the addresses of federal agents was considered a special skill which the majority of people don't reasonably possess. Although Leen pointed out that even his five-year-old could access a search engine and this was hardly demonstrative of a special skill, this argument was lost on the judge who had previously demonstrated an almost total lack of knowledge in the area during the trial. The other factor was that Bell showed no remorse over authoring Assassination Politics. Several times both the prosecutor and judge mentioned, in a style redolent of Soviet courts, that Bell hadn't recanted his essay, and therefore needed to be imprisoned for the safety of the public. Leen argued that Bell's actions were far from the equivalent of the type of crimes that merit sentences of five years, such as selling five kilos of cocaine. Tanner didn't buy that. He said that he did not see Assassination Politics as protected speech, and that it was equivalent to yelling fire in a crowded theater. Leen pointed out that the stalking went both ways; and that the statute under which Bell had been tried was not designed for someone trying to expose government conspiracy. Leen added that Bell had committed no terrible act, and that the prosecution was clearly practicing prior constraint. (The judge would essentially confirm this during his statement immediately before sentencing.) Leen insisted that his client was just mouthing off, but that this was not cause for imposing 120 months of imprisonment. Leen also pointed out that agents are paid to tolerate some level of abuse because of their jobs, but Tanner countered with questions about whether they had to put up with abuse outside of their official duties, and whether they should be exposing their families to more risk simply because they choose to work for the government. (This goes against Tanner's stand in the trial that agents deserved special protection over and above what ordinary citizens should be accorded.) Jim Bell was given an opportunity to address the court. In a wavering voice that became more firm as he spoke, Bell claimed that he was merely researching the stalking against himself, which he believed to be illegal and improper surveillance. He said that he was doing what a private investigator or a police officer is hired to do and that our society has forgotten that we have a right to do this. Bell highlighted the mutual dislike that so palpably exists between him and the judge, stating that the judge was retaliating because of a competency complaint that Bell filed against Tanner with the state bar. (Bell has kept up a barrage of filings since his April trial; in July he filed suit against Tanner and a number of other people, charging that they conspired to deny him a fair trial in April.) Bell argued that the sentencing level should be reduced because he did accept responsibility for the crime of stalking, an argument that prosecutor London later claimed was false because Bell hadn't recanted his essay. (Thus London indicated that much of the real crime was refusing to publicly recant political speech.) Bell also claimed that he shouldn't be sentenced on the stalking charges anyway, since he never made physical contact with IRS agent Jeff Gordon. Prosecutor Robb London took his opportunity to address the court. Saying that Bell's actions deserved a severe amount of time, London disagreed with Bell's characterization of his conduct. London

By revealing the figures, NATO sets boundaries for its mission in Macedonia. Called Operation Essential Harvest, it envisions NATO troops setting up collection sites to take weapons as rebels turn them in. NATO has said it plans to complete the process in 30 days and leave. But the number of weapons NATO decided on could become an obstacle to carrying out the plan. Macedonian government officials, who say the rebels have thousands more weapons than they have admitted to, said later Sunday that they had not agreed to accept NATO's figures. Prime Minister Ljubco Georgievski, a consistent opponent of the weapons collection plan, described NATO's estimates of rebel arms as humiliating. The dispute opened the possibility that the weapons collection process won't start as planned Monday. By early Sunday evening, political leaders had failed to order their forces to pull back from areas surrounding drop-off sites - a key requirement for NATO to start weapons collections. Our regrouping will be simultaneous with the arrival and deployment of NATO troops, said Marjan Gjurovski, the Macedonian defense spokesman. NATO's announcement came hours after a deadly explosion ripped through a motel, killing two people and further complicating the alliance's efforts to build confidence between the rebels and the government ahead of its mission. The Macedonian-owned motel was in Celopek, a village six miles south of the predominantly Albanian city of Tetovo. Georgievski called the attack barbaric. I have suggested that Macedonia must legitimately respond or retaliate either with a military or police action, he said. It was unclear if the government would actually act. Later Sunday, the explosion of what was apparently a bomb in a trash can in the capital, Skopje, shattered nearby store windows and damaged two cars. No injuries were reported in the blast, which police said was likely caused by industrial explosives. The explosion took place in an ethnic Albanian neighborhood, but about 50 yards from an Orthodox church. Most ethnic Albanians are Muslims; most Macedonians are Orthodox Christians. Police also reported an exchange of infantry and artillery fire in the Kumanovo area northeast of Skopje. Security forces responded adequately, police said. The planned NATO mission is the alliance's attempt to avert more bloodshed in this ethnically torn nation. Fighting broke out along Macedonia's border with Kosovo in February after ethnic Albanians launched an insurgency claiming they were fighting for greater rights. The government says ethnic Albanians, who make about a third of the country's population of 2 million, are fighting for a state of their own. After an Aug. 13 peace deal, NATO's ruling council authorized a total about 4,700 troops to help with disarmament of the rebels. The peace deal envisions a step-by-step process in which rebels will hand over weapons to NATO in exchange for political reforms in Macedonia. Since a third of the weapons are to be handed over in exchange for moves in parliament, the figure had to be revealed in advance. There are no guarantees and the path will not be easy and the alternative is clear, said Maj. Gen. Gunnar Lange, the military commander of Operation Essential Harvest. The alternative is war. Despite rebel claims to have only a few thousand weapons, the Macedonian government had claimed the insurgents have 85,000. A key Macedonian official told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity that hard-liners in the government will continue to demand more collections in an attempt to obstruct constitutional reforms envisioned under the peace agreement. NATO, which is in Macedonia at the invitation of the government, would be unlikely to act unless all the parties are on board - even though it has repeatedly stated it has come to this troubled Balkan country not as a peacekeeper but only to collect weapons voluntarily handed over. My own life experience is that I have known more liberals who behaved in this manner and claimed that they were entitled to do so as it was between two consenting adults, and no one was hurt, etc. When the family of the parties involved were very much hurt, they they would 'forgive themselves' after much 'soul-searching's and castigate anyone who did not do the same. Gary Condit -- and the Democratic Party -- in the 15 long months until the next election. The face of Modesto voter John Zank, a loyal Democrat and longtime Condit supporter, told the tale as he sat in his living room Thursday night, surrounded by family, watching Connie Chung question his congressman about the disappearance of 24-year-old intern Chandra Levy. At 10 p.m., as the interview began, Zank was on the fence about Condit, whom he described as a good politician and a probably unlucky philanderer having an affair with the young woman, who vanished May 1. At 10:09, watching Condit's wooden performance, Zank angrily shook his head. And by 10:31, Zank vowed he would never vote for Condit again. It's beyond looking like he knows something (about Levy). Clinton, who acknowledged to federal agents that he received a watch, plane tickets and expense money for his efforts on behalf of Rosario Gambino before the U.S. Parole Commission, assured Gambino's son, Tommy, that his father was a ''lock'' for a pardon by the president before he left office, the Times said, citing someone close to Tommy Gambino. But while Clinton issued pardons and commutations for 177 people, many of which remain controversial, those recommended by Roger Clinton were not among them. Gambino, whose name was included on a list sent by the White House to the Justice Department (news - web sites) in late January for possible clemency, is serving a 45-year sentence for his role in a heroin smuggling ring. In an article based on interviews with federal officials and documents obtained through the Freedom of Information Act, Clinton is depicted as ``a tireless, if inept, advocate whose persistent pleas annoyed and worried parole commission officials.'' In a case separate from the Gambino effort, a felon told prosecutors that he had paid Clinton $225,000 to lobby for a pardon and complained that Clinton did little or nothing in return, the Times reported. FINANCIAL REWARD SUGGESTED In a September 1999 meeting with FBI (news - web sites) agents at his Redondo Beach, California home, Clinton said Tommy Gambino had told him ''we will take care of you'' if he won release for Rosario Gambino, a distant relative of the late crime boss Carlo Gambino. Clinton said he understood that comment to mean he would be financially rewarded, the report said. ``I'm not stupid,'' he was quoted as having said in the agents' notes on the meeting. Roger Clinton is the subject of congressional and federal investigations into influence peddling and other possible illegalities in connection with last-minute pardons granted by his brother shortly before he left office in January. According to the Times, Roger Clinton visited the parole commission's Chevy Chase, Maryland headquarters at least four times on Gambino's behalf. He tried to exploit his ties to an Arkansas parole commissioner, he invoked his brother's authority and he even produced listings from a Sicilian telephone book as evidence that Gambino is a common name and thus, not every Gambino was associated with the crime family. In January 1999 the FBI attempted a sting operation against Clinton. The parole commission's chief of staff met him in a conference room equipped with an FBI listening device and asked him open-ended questions such as ``What do you want me to do?'' But officials said the conversations led to no improprieties, and the Times said there was no record of any further lobbying by Clinton on Gambino's behalf. Gary Condit finally broke his silence, talking to media outlets including Newsweek. But his evasiveness only added to his political woes-and suspicions he knows more than he's saying about Chandra Levy's whereabouts By Michael Isikoff and Evan Thomas NEWSWEEK Sept. 3 issue - It was a little bit like being led to the lair of a famous fugitive. A NEWSWEEK reporter was not told where he was going, just that he was to be ready at his hotel at 1:15 p.m. The driver who picked him up kept checking his mirror and at one point veered into the parking lot of a funeral home to make sure no one was following. THE MOOD INSIDE the congressman's hideaway, a condo somewhere in the central-valley city of Modesto, Calif., was beleaguered. We're worse off after the interviews than before the interviews, an aide morosely declared. After being grilled by ABC's Connie Chung on national TV the night before, as well as by a variety of local reporters and scribes from People magazine and Vanity Fair, Gary Condit himself seemed numb. I'm on kind of like autopilot, he told NEWSWEEK. The weary, stony-faced congressman stirred himself to be sympathetic to the family of Chandra Levy-genuinely so, it seemed. He recalled being horrified at hearing from Chandra's father, Dr. Robert Levy, that the 24-year-old intern was missing. The tone of his voice even scared me Just his hurt and pain, said Condit. I do have kids and I know I would say and do about everything to get them back. He described an affectionate relationship with Chandra, though hardly the hot romance described by Chandra's aunt Linda Zamsky, who said Chandra talked about having children with Condit. In Condit's version to NEWSWEEK, the conversations were casual and ran more to federal-prison policy and Modesto politics. Toward the end of the hour-and-45-minute interview, Condit's anger at the media circus boiled up again and he grew bitter and sarcastic. The press has sort of made this into a soapbox scandal... to keep their ratings up, said Condit. I sat there the whole time waiting for Connie Chung to ask me something other than a sex question. 'DISTURBING AND WRONG' The Chandra Levy story had been slowly fizzling before Condit spoke out last week. Why did he bother? The media criticism of his performance with Chung and the other interviewers was unrelenting, and the public reaction wasn't much better. One NBC poll showed that only 2 percent believed that Condit was motivated mainly by his concern for Chandra, while 93 percent said he was protecting himself politically. Not very successfully: House Democratic Leader Richard Gephardt in effect dumped Condit, calling his colleague's lack of candor disturbing and wrong. In Condit's home district, some voters sympathized with his sullen effort to preserve a shred of privacy, but others agreed with Seth Medefind, 20, who told NEWSWEEK: He seemed to be saying that everyone was lying but him. The roundelay of Condit interviews, hyped to an almost ludicrous degree by the cable news networks, shed no light on the disappearance of Chandra Levy. The spectacle seemed staged mostly for the benefit of lawyers, PR advisers, reporters and media executives. Chung's interview on the evening of Aug. 23 was watched by about 24 million viewers. But twice as many viewers tuned in to see Barbara Walters interview Monica Lewinsky in 1999. Indeed, by the weekend the dish on Condit tasted slightly stale, like warmed-over takeout. Condit was defensive and self-pitying in the manner of Bill Clinton (or for that matter any other serial adulterer caught in the glare), but he is an obscure congressman, not the president, and his political survival is not all that significant to the fate of the republic. The gamesmanship between Condit and his pack of pursuers was interesting mostly as an exercise in how to survive-or perish-in the permanent-scandal culture of Washington. According to Condit's handlers, the congressman failed to stick to the script. He was supposed to begin his interview with Chung by expressing his sympathy with the Levy family. But sources at ABC tell NEWSWEEK that network producers anticipated a filibuster from the congressman. So, before he could launch off a prepared speech, Chung hit him with a series of tough questions, bang-bang, culminating with Did you kill Chandra Levy? Condit could only force a creepy grimace and utter, I did not. From then on, he seemed angrily defiant. It was obvious that Chung would ask him about other romantic dalliances. Condit was supposed to say that they were irrelevant to Chandra's disappearance. It is a state that has an independent streak and caters to the tough immigrants and settlers who decided that America's Siberia was an okay place to live and raise kids. Nonetheless, the Land of Ten Thousand Lakes is not immune to the central planning of the burgeoning collectivist state located in Washington, D.C. Parents, along with some educators, professionals and legislators, have been battling the directives of those bureaucrats and politicians who are forcing on the states Outcome Based Education, Goals 2000, School-To-Work, Workforce Investment Act, invasive student surveys, whole language, revisionist history, and integrated math. (Integrated math teaches that there is no right answer; there is little deduction grounded in mathematical skills requiring the boring work of memorization or learning without depending on a calculator.) Located in St. Paul, Minnesota, Minnesota's Maple River Coalition has been getting the word out about what is really going on in education today. They understand the latest effort by central planners to turn kids into human capital. Its current manifestation is George Bush's No Child Left Behind. Apparently, it is one more expensive, destructive program emanating from policy wonks and experts along with politicians in the amen corner throwing money and influence at it. Like the rest of the new policies and systems it is little more than a plan to train workers for the centrally planned world economy we will be sharing in the not-too-distant future. On September 29, 2001, a group of parents, educators and legislators will meet in Arden Hills, Minnesota, in order to discuss and plan a strategy to circumvent the new old system of education. As Minnesota education activists have discovered, the new wine of education reform is the same old bottle of blinding moonshine offered by the federal feudal barons in D.C. The new idea from the Bush administration is the same creation of a national curriculum. Eventually all these octopus programs will reach out and control private schools and homeschools under the collectivist intellectual leaky big tent. It isn't that Minnesota's parents and educators don't care and have given up. Indeed, that is not the case. These intelligent, concerned groups and individuals have been attempting to find a workable solution in a state that has always offered decent educational opportunities. Minnesota usually ranks high in national tests, as do most other upper Midwest states. In 2000 the Minnesota State Legislature tried to offer local communities some autonomy in order to allow them flexibility in developing their curriculum. Shortly thereafter, the U.S. Department of Education gave notice to the state that there could be NO deviation from federal requirements. The threat of losing all federal money was the willing seller club to be used to bash the state in order to force it to comply with federal standards. Standards which Minnesotans had found wanting because they are mediocre and geared to the lowest common denominator. The upcoming Maple River Conference will endeavor to show people what is happening and how terrible even No Child Left Behind is for children of the state and the nation. The speakers and experts will make suggestions on how to counter federal education despotism over the states. It is interesting to note that one of the conference topics is Federal Workforce Investment Act: Restructuring for a State-Planned Economy. Another topic is bringing private schools and homeschools into the seamless web. With the U.S. Department of Education and the experts involved, it is more likely that the outcome will be a federally sponsored, centrally planned nightmare from hell. Seamless Web of Deception Every bad idea has a father - sometimes several fathers. The current state of American education is the bastard child of several fathers. The bad ideas that are forcing states like Minnesota into compliance with a failed system and structure goes back into the 19th century. One of the fathers of the red-haired stepchild is Georg Hegel. He is patriarch of one of the worst intellectual and philosophical systems in the history of mankind. It is a sad fact but every bad idea in the last 200 years can be found in some Prussian school of social philosophy. I'm not picking on the Germans, so pull in your horns.
