Forgotten amid all the excitement was the fact that many of the 371 newcomers had been bankrolled by grants from U.S. evangelical Christians, who regard the return of Jews to the Holy Land as part of an apocalyptic prophecy foretold in the Bible. What I'm seeing is the Scriptures being fulfilled right before our very eyes, said Bishop Huey Harris, whose First Pentecostal Tabernacle Church in Elkton, Md., raised $2,500 from its congregation to help finance the American Jews' journey. What's next? I'm looking for the church to be raptured, Jesus returning for the church . . . and the Jews would receive him as their Messiah. UNDETERRED BY BOMBINGS That was far from the mind of Noa Hirsch, a 22-year-old law student from Pittsburgh, as she basked in the greeting by hundreds of well-wishers at the airport. Hirsch said she had come to Israel to join my people in my land, and she refused to be deterred by the fact that Jerusalem, her new home, has been a frequent target of Palestinian suicide bombers. Maybe I'm being foolish, but I don't think so, she said. Terror is everywhere. I'm not going to let someone tell me how to live my life. The past 21 months of violence with the Palestinians have prompted American Christian evangelicals to find more reason than ever to support the Jewish state. A growing number have visited the region -- appearing on radio and talk shows, increasing their financial donations to Jewish settlements in the West Bank and Gaza and even financing advertisements on Israeli television stressing their unwavering friendship with Israel. 'BEHIND ISRAEL' This is the time to show we are behind Israel, Gary Bauer, former GOP presidential candidate and prominent member of the religious right, said during his first trip to Israel this month. This is an amazing moment in our relations. I think what we are seeing is the forging of a lasting alliance with Jews. Fundamentalist Christian support for the Jewish people is not new, especially among an evangelical subset known as Christian Zionists, who make up an estimated 3 million of America's 98 million evangelicals. Religious experts believe that some 30 million Christians have some Zionist beliefs. BIBLICAL PROPHECY Doctrinally, they regard the ingathering of Jewish exiles as the fulfillment of biblical prophecy that will precede the Second Coming and end of days. Such a belief has tended to fill many Jews with suspicion and made for mutually tense relations. But the current intense round of Middle East bloodshed has caused the iciness to thaw and the relationship to blossom. The change has not been so much in the Christians as with Israelis and Jews, who are feeling very isolated in the world, said Rabbi David Rosen, director of interreligious affairs at the American-Jewish Committee. What you are seeing is an increasing Jewish awareness of evangelical support for Israel that has led both representatives of Israel and organized Jewish communities to be more effusive in their attitudes toward them. The shift could have important political ramifications in the United States. While pro-Israel advocates once looked to liberal Democrats for their main support, they are increasingly warming to conservative Republicans, whose pet causes such as school prayer have long been anathema to many Jews. Manifestations of the growing relationship are being seen increasingly on both sides of the Atlantic -- including a recent speech by House Majority Whip Tom DeLay, R- Texas, to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee conference, an invitation to Attorney General John Ashcroft to speak to the Anti- Defamation League -- despite a statement it issued in January criticizing his remark that in America, We have no king but Jesus -- and a warm welcome for Christian conservative figures at a large pro-Israel rally in Washington last April. LETTER TO SHARON In Israel this week, Bauer presented Prime Minister Ariel Sharon with a letter signed by several leading members of the Christian right including Jerry Falwell, expressing the belief that Israel has shown incredible restraint in the face of wanton violence aimed at innocent Israeli citizens. One thing I heard was you suggesting to him that he was coming off
like a nut. I recall this was in reference to his belief that the
Iraqis didn't gas the Kurds, at least in the way the ChickenHawk
Warmongers would like everyone to believe. As far as I know, the
issue was chronologically tied to the Iran-Iraq War. Remember that
one? The one in which Bush Sr and Ronnie were arming both sides of
the conflict? Their effort to castrate the region until they wised
up?
What was very exposing (more than revealing) was Jude's source was on
the tube once upon a time, on Faux News, no less, on with John Gibson,
on the O'REILLY FACTOR. The fellow's name was Stephen Pelletiere, a
lecturer/researcher at the U.S. Army War College, as I recollect the
specificity of his facts. How cool! The O'Really Fractured Facts now
can dispute not only Jude but his source's facts as well,
demonstrating the anti-Semitism of the media (remember that Arabs are
Semites too)(if not more than ...). This of course refers to the
unnumbered times that there have been verbal and military attacks
against the countries of the region, their peoples, and their leaders,
with unmitigated vilification. And your car takes how many gallons of
gas each trip to the pump? Oh, you sold it in solidarity with your
beliefs?
Now, the next neat shillism is your analysis of Arbusto's stock
trading. Who in the world cares if the stock went back up later on?
The point is Shrub made his leaves into cash when he did; the
suggestion you make that the accusations against him are bogus
assumes he is also (along with you) a crystal ball gazer when it comes
to the stock market. You also fail to mention that the stock DIDN'T
stay up there very long. If you o'really did your research you'd see
the stock has been in a long-liding slump for quite a while. Shrub

Shapiro Posted Tuesday, July 9, 2002, at 12:35 PM PT The Anti-Defamation League last month released a survey stating that fully 17 percent of the U.S. population holds beliefs that are strongly anti- Semitic. The report also said that 35 percent of Latinos and 35 percent of African- Americans were strongly anti- Semitic. Wow, I thought, that's a lot of Jew-haters! On closer inspection, though, the ADL's methodology seems pretty shaky. How does the ADL measure anti-Semitism? With an anti- Semitism index, of course. Respondents are asked to comment on 11 supposedly inflammatory statements about Jews. Those who agree with anywhere from two to five of the statements are middle anti-Semitesnot completely prejudice- free in their attitudes toward Jews, but not an audience to be deeply worried about. Those who agree with six or more of the statements are most (i.e., strongly) anti-Semitic. Here are the 11 statements: 1) Jews stick together more than other Americans. 2) Jews always like to be at the head of things. 3) Jews are more loyal to Israel than America. 4) Jews have too much power in the U.S. today. 5) Jews have too much control and influence on Wall Street. 6) Jews have too much power in the business world. 7) Jews have a lot of irritating faults. 8) Jews are more willing than others to use shady practices to get what they want. 9) Jewish businesspeople are so shrewd that others don't have a fair chance at competition. 10) Jews don't care what happens to anyone but their own kind. 11) Jews are not just as honest as other businesspeople. Even the ADL concedes that at least one or two of the above statements are arguably ambiguous. (They're included only because they've been part of the group's methodology since 1964.) In reality, about half the above statements can be described as (varyingly cartoonish) descriptions of cultural traits widely ascribed to Jews that are either neutral or flattering. Statements such as Jewish business people are so shrewd that others don't have a fair chance at competition and Jews always like to be at the head of things are really just ham-handed ways of saying that Jews tend to be smart, a generalization that in other contexts Jews might agree with. Even a genuinely offensive statement such as Jews have too much power might conceivably win endorsement not because the respondent hates Jews but because the respondent hates power. When you rephrase it as a multiple-choice question (Which group has too much power?), significantly fewer people choose Jews. Who Really Wants War With Iraq? How Martha Stewart Outsmarted Fidelity Bush's Shifty Business Ethics In the survey, the 11 anti-Semitic statements are camouflaged by other positive and neutral statements about Jews, responses that the ADL ignores when compiling its anti-Semitism index. Among the philo-Semitic ones are statements that Jews have a special commitment to social justice and that Jews have contributed much to America's cultural life. (Interestingly, the ADL finds that an overwhelming majority of Americans accept virtually all the positive statements about Jews.) But the camouflage works all too well: The positive and neutral statements are often indistinguishable from the anti- Semitic ones. It is stated, for instance, that Jews place a strong emphasis on the importance of family life. Why should this be regarded as less offensive than Jews stick together more than other Americans? The latter may be an anti-Semitic trope, but it's circulated with pride at your average Shabbat afternoon lecture of the National Conference of Synagogue Youth. It also inspires admiration in other ethnic groups. Tellingly, the ADL report claims there are much higher rates of anti-Semitism in foreign-born Latinos than those who were born in America44 percent versus 20 percent. But perhaps what that number really shows is that recent immigrants value sticking together and remaining loyal to the mother country. In some instances, the ADL's methodology may be drastically underestimating the extent of anti-Semitism. For example, the survey states a gratifyingly low (three percent) rate of anti- Semitism on campus. From this it concludes that anti-Semitism is more common among less-educated people. But is that really so? After all, college students are well-schooled in the correct answers to the ADL quiz. If, as many Jewish groups assert, anti-Semitism is piggybacking anti-Israel sentiment on campuses, it's not on statements like Jews are shrewd in business. Israeli hackers lead the world

During the first half of 2002, Israel ranked first in the world in the number of hacker
attacks relative to its number of Web users, according to a study published by the
American security firm Riptech. The study found that for every 10,000 Israeli Web
surfers, there are an average of 33.1 hacker attacks generated against Internet sites
throughout the world.
Hong Kong came in second in the study, with 22.1 attacks per 10,000 Web users,
followed by France (19.9), Belgium (17.6) and Thailand (15.9).
Riptech, founded in 1998, provides real-time information protection. Its largest
customer is the U.S. Department of Defense. The company publishes a special
report twice a year in which it analyzes prominent online attacks during the previous
six months. Riptech published its Internet Security Threat Report covering January-
June 2002 on Monday. The report draws on information collected from a sample of
400 companies throughout the world. This data enabled Riptech to identify about
180,000 attacks on Internet servers.
The new report documents a 28 percent rise in the number of hacker attacks
compared to the same six-month period last year. An average company faced about
32 such attacks per week during the first half of 2002, compared to 25 attacks during
the first six months of 2001. About 99 percent of these attacks did not endanger the
organization's server.
According to the authors of the report, attacks are mounted against Web servers 24
hours a day, 7 days a week, but the hackers are less active (by 19 percent) on the
weekends. The favorite day for hackers turns out to be Wednesday, when 16.4
percent of all attacks are launched.
Private firms are the main targets of attack (68 percent), with public organizations
(21
percent) and government companies (4 percent) less prone to attack. Electric
companies were an especially popular target - 70 percent were hit during the past six
months, up from 57 percent during the first half of 2001.
Financial firms were also among the leading targets (46 percent were hit), followed
by non-profit organizations (32 percent) and high-tech firms (27 percent). Lowest on
the hit list were hospitals and health organizations (9 percent).
During the last two years, Eastern Europe has been seen as the leading source of
hacker attacks, but the report does not substantiate this reputation. According to
Riptech, 40 percent of online attacks originate in the United States, followed by
Germany (7.6 percent), South Korea (7.4 percent), China (6.9 percent) and France
(5.2 percent).
The study also notes that only 1 percent of the hacker attacks during the first half of
2002 were generated in the seven countries identified by the Pentagon as those
which support terror (Iran, Iraq, Cuba, Sudan, North Korea, Syria and Libya).

The Russian foreign ministry, meanwhile, said Moscow had not yet been consulted by Washington on any specific US plan to unseat the Iraqi regime as Iraq said the US could not remove President Saddam Hussein from power. Also Tuesday, Iraqi Foreign Minister Naji Sabri accused Hans Blix, the chief UN arms inspector for Iraq, of having blocked, at Washington's behest, last week's talks with UN Secretary General Kofi Annan in Vienna. In Rome, the Italian defence minister said he concluded from meetings with European officials that European countries would not take part in any military action against Iraq without sufficient proof from the US. It has become evident from the meetings I have had with European colleagues that if the United States were to decide to take action in Iraq, European countries would not take part unless it were already proven clearly and unequivocally that Iraq was producing weapons of mass destruction, he said. It is only under these circumstances that European countries would consider a possible intervention, he added. President George W. Bush said Monday that the United States would use all methods available to overturn Saddam Hussein. The New York Times reported Friday that a top secret US military document outlines a massive, three-pronged attack on Iraq by land, sea and air with as many as 250,000 troops and hundreds of warplanes. Commenting on the report, Martino stressed that the use of the word plan was misleading. A plan can be something that you intend to carry out in the short-term, that is destined to be put into operation, but it can also be a hypothetical idea that will never be put into practice at all, he said. The Russian foreign ministry, meanwhile, said Moscow had not yet been consulted on any specific US plan to unseat the Iraqi regime. Reaffirming its strong opposition to any military intervention in Iraq, the ministry said in a statement that it had not yet held any detailed consultations with Washington on the subject. We do not have any concrete information about some secret plan by the US administration to topple Saddam Hussein, and we are not leading negotiations on this subject, the ministry said in a statement. We firmly believe that an unjustified use of force against Iraq will lead to catastrophic consequences for the whole Middle Eastern region, the statement added. In Pretoria, Iraq's Deputy Prime Minister Tareq Aziz said on Tuesday the US could not remove President Saddam from power and his country was ready to defend itself against American aggression. Aziz told reporters after a week-long visit to South Africa that Iraq was not worried by comments on Monday from Bush, who said the US would use all tools at its disposal to oust the Iraqi leader. On the domestic front President Bush has found that in many ways he can govern by executive order. In foreign affairs he has the nerve to tell other people that they should get rid of their current leaders. Amazingly, with Americans turning into a new silent majority and Congress into a bunch of obeisant lawmakers, he is getting away with such acts. The lawmakers are worried that Bush will play the patriot card in the November elections to attack dissenters and opponents. The Democratic leaders have already rolled over. They have given him a blank check by passing the USA Patriot Act, which permits outrageous invasions of privacy, and by seconding Bush's foreign policy with a weak me too. Whatever happened to congressional oversight? I remember all too well the senators who gave President Lyndon B. Johnson a free hand to do whatever he believed was necessary in Southeast Asia. They lived to regret it. The result was the Vietnam War that ripped our country apart. The list of the president's self-empowerment moves grows almost daily and will continue unless the Supreme Court calls his hand. Did I say Supreme Court? Forget it. Not with this court. It handed him the 2000 election, and it would probably cite some World War II decisions that allowed the government to violate citizens' civil rights, especially those of Japanese Americans, in the name of national security. Civil rights are now clearly being ignored by government agents in the war on terrorism who want to make the vulnerable detainees talk. The agents' methods of extracting information are not disclosed. And the imprisoned suspects and material witnesses cannot get in touch with lawyers or their families. I'm not talking about Russia's infamous gulags. I am talking about us. The president made the arbitrary decision to designate as a foreign enemy combatant the Brooklyn-born Jose Padilla, who is suspected of being an al-Qaida scout seeking to locate targets for a dirty bomb attack. He is being held incommunicado in a military brig without due process of law and without being charged. Where are the great constitutional law experts who might protest such treatment? It appears they have bowed to the exigencies of our time and are accepting Bush's end-runs around the law involving some 2,400 detainees, who are reportedly being held indefinitely by U.S. authorities. Can Americans really tolerate the denial of rights to these people? Overseeing much of the chipping away at our privacy and other civil liberties is Attorney General John Ashcroft. He is enthusiastically using the patriot law to let federal agents wiretap and access the e-mail of untold numbers of citizens and to listen in on conversations between lawyers and clients. Now FBI agents are checking lists of readers at libraries and book stores. Is book burning in our future? Ashcroft also sent a memo to federal agencies promising that the Justice Department will back them up anytime they want to deny freedom of information requests from scholars and journalists. Here, he is protecting Bush from criticism over the administration's clamp-down on government information. Rest assured he could not do this without the imprimatur of the White House. We should not forget that Bush, early in his tenure, blocked the implementation of the release of President Reagan's White House papers. Under the Presidential Records Act of 1978, his official documents were to be available to the public 12 years after he left office. So they were due for release last year, but Bush simply overrode that law. Was he trying to protect Reagan from the probing of historians and the media? Or was he really trying to protect his father, George H. W. Bush, who was Reagan's vice president and who succeeded him as president? White House aides issued a flimsy excuse-- that the order was designed to institute an orderly release of the papers. But my guess is that No. 43, as W calls himself, was trying to protect No. 41. Equally blatant examples of Bush's arrogance of power are in his foreign policy. What right does he have to tell Yasser Arafat that he has to go or to tell the Palestinians they cannot vote for Arafat in coming elections? Bush's speech could have been written by Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon. Although he speaks of his compassion for the suffering Palestinians under Israel's military occupation, Bush is tightening the screws by making it clear he will deny them any aid unless Arafat is deposed. Plans to topple Iraq's Saddam Hussein have also been on the president's radar screen since he took office. Britain normally likes to support America, but the Americans are trying to sabotage the court, so on the ICC Britain finds itself in harmony with Europe. The US President George W Bush has a new policy-'pre-emptive action' or 'anticipatory self-defence'. That means America may strike first if it fears a country may be planning an attack on the US. The new ICC might regard such action as aggression-a war crime, hence the American attempt to derail the court. The Britain Prime Minister Tony Blair likes to believe he can influence Bush, but in Washington today power rests with the hawks who invented the new policy. In British Parliament today, Blair was asked about the US plan to protect its steel industry in defiance of free trade agreements, and Bushs refusal to deal with Yasser Arafat-both issues of profound transatlantic disagreement. Theres also the row over climate change. No compromise has emerged over in Bosnia, so it seems that while the Americans will keep their troops there for the moment, they will pull out their police. The relationship with US is turning into the biggest diplomatic difficulty the Prime Minister Blair faces. His instinct is to back US President Bush but the Americans are making that increasingly difficult. Prime Minister Blair likes to see himself as a bridge between the US and Europe, but at the moment the gaps just too wide to bear. The veto was the typical reaction of a super power that knows it is in a power league (as opposed to a moral league!) by itself and cannot tolerate the rest of the world operationalising something that it disapproves of. Yet that is exactly what the international community has done in giving birth to the International Criminal Court beginning July 1, 2002. This is a court that the US does not approve of since it feels its citizens, especially soldiers, cannot be internationally accountable - even when it has begun an international war on terrorism. Of course, given the scant regard for international norms that the US has shown, especially post-9/11, it is understandable why the US would not want to get involved in the International Criminal Court (ICC). After all, its soldiers have been killing Afghan civilians and allied forces indiscriminately with not so much as a regret - all in the name of collateral damage. Even earlier, US and British warplanes have been bombing Iraqi territory and population at will, and now the US has every intent of launching a military strike against Iraq once more. Also, the US has failed to observe any international norms regarding the prisoners at Guantanamo bay, and gradually the international community is trying to take action against this abuse of prevailing international law - 24 Kuwaiti families are trying to sue the US government for denying its citizens at Guantanamo Bay the basic rights under international law which even the Nazis were provided at Nuremberg and which Milosevic is being given presently at The Hague. However, to simply spite the international community's operationalisation of the ICC and veto the resolution on UN peacekeepers in Bosnia reflects the worst aspects of US unilateralism. After all, if the US feels its soldiers cannot be subject to international norms, other states will also adopt a similar posture and one can visualise the end of notions such as multilateral peacekeeping. This is the unfortunate reality today in global politics. The US, post 9/11, has evolved a unilateralist approach to global politics (and economics as the steel issue showed) even as it seeks international support for its policies. Nor is this unilateralism isolationist in character. Instead, it is extensively interventionist and premised on the dangerous doctrine of preemption. So now the US can, on its own assessment, go and attack any country any time and anywhere as part of the new preemption doctrine which Bush spoke of at the US Military Academy at West Point (New York state). Based on a US defined axis of evil, this new policy sees no role for consultation with allies and so on - it simply rationalises US military aggression under the guise of preemption against a perceived threat. From now on, any state which differs with the US on crucial security issues may become a victim of US military preemption - with no verification or substantive evidence required. Pieces of information will be adequate - or perhaps just the whims of the US President. And no international framework will be in place to take stock of the realities on the ground and assess the validity of such a threat in the first place. So a new, free-for-all will be the hallmark of global politics with the strong doing what they please and the weak having no recourse to any international institutional safeguards. No wonder the US feels threatened by the ICC. So the tone has been set for a militaristic unilateralism on the part of the US. And what is kosher for the US will soon become kosher for its ambitious allies across the globe. Already one can see that in the growing militarism of Israel and India. Israel refused to allow a UN SC-mandated inquiry into the Jenin massacre! And India continues to use the same unilateralism in its military aggression against the Kashmiris in Occupied Kashmir. And the US allows this to happen. In fact, Israel has adopted the preemption doctrine even more extensively than the US itself presently. Hence, we are seeing Israeli forces simply destroy Palestinian buildings with people in them on the pretext that these people are terrorists. And not a word of condemnation from the US. Even the Europeans, who do not go along with Mr Bush on all aspects of the new US unilateralism, seem to have been browbeaten into an uneasy silence. Of course, the Bush statement on the Middle East reflects an acceptance and encouragement of Israeli military aggression against the Palestinians. Even more dangerous has been the call by the US for the removal of Arafat. This shows a new dimension of the

WALD WASHINGTON, July 10 - The House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly today to let airline pilots carry guns in their cockpits, a move that the new Transportation Security Administration said six weeks ago it would not allow. The idea of arming pilots faces opposition in the Senate, but a proposal similar to the House bill gained support there today, raising the possibility Congress will try to overrule the Bush administration's decision. The House legislation, approved 310 to 113, provides that pilots are to be trained by the new security agency and deputized as federal flight deck officers, then allowed to carry guns on domestic and international flights. The bill specified that guns were to be used only in the cockpit, not taken into the passenger cabin. According to terms of the bill, the government would supply the guns but under certain circumstances would let pilots buy their own from a list of approved types. Details of where the guns would be stored between flights, and guidelines about their legal use, were left to the security agency to determine. Opponents of the measure are already lobbying the Senate. A background paper circulating there prepared by the Violence Policy Center, a Washington-based gun control group, asserts that 21 percent of police officers killed with a handgun were shot with their own service weapons. According to the center, trained law enforcment officials have only an 18 to 22 percent hit ratio in armed confrontations. When the Air Line Pilots Association proposed the idea two weeks after the Sept. 11 hijackings, the response among elected officials was mixed. President Bush said that there may be better ways to provide security for air travelers. Initially, Congress left the decision to the Transportation Security Administration it created last winter to take over airport security. But when John Magaw, head of the agency, said in May that he would not allow pilots to be armed - opting instead to rely on stronger cockpit doors, air marshals and better screening of passengers - many members of Congress said they were outraged. Don Young, the Alaska Republican who is the chairman of the House Transportation Committee, asked in debate today. A spokesman for the Department of Transportation said today that Our position remains unchanged, and that Transportation Secretary Norman Y. Mineta and Mr. Magaw were strongly opposed to arming pilots. A White House spokeswoman, Claire Buchan, said after the vote that the administration had improved security by having the federal government assume supervision of the screeners who search passengers, adding air marshals and strengthening cockpit doors, among other steps. We're continuing to improve every day, Ms. Buchan said. With regard to the proposals to arm pilots, security experts and transportation experts have made clear that they view other methods as being more effective. Aviation experts have said guns would be a distraction to professionals whose attention ought to be devoted to flying the airplane. Though he changed his position, Duane Woerth, president of the pilots association, told a Senate committee just after the Sept. 11 attack that pilots could not be Sky King and Wyatt Earp at the same time. Others raised questions about the effect stray bullets might have on cockpit control panels. Pilots, though, have loudly supported the bill, noting that a few were allowed to carry guns back when the worry was hijackings to Cuba. House staff members said that about half of the roughly 70,000 airline pilots were military veterans, experience that proponents said supported the measure. Representative John L. Mica, Republican of Florida and chairman of the House aviation subcommittee, noted recently that in bygone years, every plane carrying the U.S. mail carried a pistol for the pilot to use against would-be robbers. Today, he showed a photograph of a gun marked United Airlines, which he said the airline issued to a pilot long ago. Representative James L. Oberstar of Minnesota, the ranking Democrat on the committee, said he had first sided with the administration, but changed his mind because of the current federal policy that authorizes Air National Guard pilots to shoot down hijacked planes. All our rules of evidence-what evidence is admissible, what evidence is not-come basically from the English common law system. A court is a place to make a public record. That's all that a court is. We have an adversary system-a plaintiff, a defendant, and a neutral judge. Each side has an opportunity to come into the courtroom, put on his case and call his witnesses, to prove that the facts he is alleging give him the right to recover according to some rule of law. Each side has a right to put on its evidence, to cross-examine the other party's witnesses and to discredit those witnesses so that their testimony should not be believed. In the English system there were the royal courts and there was no such thing as a constitution. There was no such thing as equal protection under the law and due process of law. The system was based on whatever the king granted to his subjects. Until the time of the Magna Carta in 1215, when King John was stripped of his absolute power, the kings had absolute life and death power over their subjects. The serfs had no rights at all. Through the Magna Carta, the local nobility put restrictions on King John. In 1640 there was a movement by the international bankers to depose Charles I of England, which they did. He was beheaded. Oliver Cromwell came to power and that was the breaking of the stranglehold that the nobility had on the country, shifting it from the nobility-the landed aristocracy-to the bankers. The bankers-then as now-controlled the money, thus they controlled who was elected to Parliament. The English Parliament became a bastion of people basically working for the Bank of England. The Bank of England was given a charter in 1690 in exchange for a loan to the King William III. It became totally above any laws passed by Parliament. By 1694 the Bank of England was running England and also financing and running the international bankers' empire around the world. America was colonized. Colonies are trading posts created by the bankers. The bankers acquire the people to go and colonize different areas whether it's Australia, North America, South America-wherever it is-it's creating their system in a new environment. Holland colonized in America. New York was called New Amsterdam. In about 1660 the British defeated Holland taking over her colonies and becoming the premier maritime power, vying with France. France and England had been at war for a long time fighting over colonies. France controlled Canada and the Mississippi Valley. St. Louis was named after Louis the 12th. When the English took over from the Dutch and started expanding those colonies the French used the Indians to attack and massacre the settlers. George Washington was a captain, a soldier for the British government in those wars. That's when our court system, our rules of evidence came in, with the British system. The king appointed royal courts. When this country was first founded it contained rugged individuals who looked out for themselves. The government, if anything, did the military function, improved the roads and those kinds of things. But you didn't have all these social functions-medicare, social security, medicaid, childcare, aid to education-all these things didn't exist so each person was forced into self-reliance. As the east coast built up people migrated across country but the migration was funded by the bankers to exploit the land, the mines and the timber for their own gain. They gave the people the opportunity to come out here and, there again, you had this rugged individualism that we admire so much. For a long time the colonists were left to create their own money, their own activity. All that money does is it creates a medium of exchange to facilitate commerce. If it's issued by the government no interest accrues. But the bankers reeled in abject horror to the idea that that kind of system would be set up. England and the Bank of England were taxing different products and getting their income that way. This continued until the 1770's and the French and Indian wars. The colonists-like today-if the business people are making profit, they don't want to disturb their lifestyle so they tolerate a lot of abuse in order to maintain what they see as a comfortable lifestyle. Concerning the Revolutionary War, there's always rumbling for change, obviously, when you're a colony. But, like today, things have to reach a certain level before good people will stand up. Ballard, who discovered the Titanic, the Bismarck and dozens of other lost ships, yesterday announced his latest find: PT 109, John F. Kennedy's wartime boat, which a Japanese destroyer rammed and sank in the South Pacific in 1943. Dr. Ballard said he found what appears to be the resting place of PT 109 about 1,300 feet down in strong currents off the Solomon Islands. Only a few bits of wood and wreckage were visible above the bottom's shifting sands. Experts from the Naval Historical Center in Washington, after reviewing imagery and other evidence from Dr. Ballard's expedition, confirmed that the main pieces of wreckage, a torpedo and a launcher, were of the right type and that no other PT boats had been lost in the vicinity. The site, the Navy team concluded, is likely the wreck of the PT 109, an 80-foot boat whose sinking became a legend of heroism that helped propel Kennedy to national prominence and the White House. I am thrilled with the Navy's conclusions, Dr. Ballard said. The strong underwater currents we encountered made PT 109 unlike any of my past expeditions. It was like conducting a search in the Sahara Desert during a blinding sandstorm. To succeed, we needed all our skills and technology, plus a healthy dose of luck. Dr. Ballard's expedition in May was financed by the National Geographic Society; the Institute for Exploration in Mystic, Conn., where he is president; and the Office of Naval Research. Yesterday, Dr. Ballard, 60, said he planned to leave the wreckage untouched as a memorial to the two crew members who died. In this, he said, he was also following the wishes of Kennedy family members. Senator Edward M. Kennedy praised the discovery of his brother's boat as careful and respectful. Finding PT 109 is especially meaningful to the members of my family, but we also believe it represents the story of all the brave young men who fought with such courage in the South Pacific, Mr. Kennedy said in a statement. Asked about the significance of the find, Dr. Ballard, a Navy veteran, talked of the boat's young skipper, Lieutenant Kennedy, then 26 and seeing combat for the first time. It was clear this was the turning point in this man's life, Dr. Ballard said, helping Kennedy go on to become a big part of American history. PT 109 was a patrol torpedo boat built in Bayonne, N.J., of plywood. Light and speedy, it carried four torpedoes. On the night of Aug. 2, 1943, about 800 miles north of Australia, it was sent into Blackett Strait in the Solomon Islands to attack the Japanese. Instead, the Japanese destroyer Amagiri rammed PT 109 before Lieutenant Kennedy could order the firing of its torpedoes. The 11 surviving crewmen, forced into a sea aflame with gasoline, floated on part of the hull and eventually swam to nearby Plum Pudding Island, now known as Kennedy Island. Kennedy towed a wounded crewman in the water, and his actions created a heroic image that aided his rise in national politics. The story was told in PT 109, a 1961 book, and a 1962 song by Jimmy Dean and a 1963 movie of the same title. Dr. Ballard has long taken advantage of technological developments. In 1985, he found the Titanic in North Atlantic waters nearly two and a half miles deep. Yesterday, he said he had dreamed of finding PT 109 and had planned to look for it on a 1992 expedition but ran out of time. This May off the Solomons, Dr. Ballard and his team spent several days searching a five-by-seven-mile area with sonar. Once targets were identified, the team sent robots with video cameras to take closer looks. In the collision area, the team had hoped to find part of the boat's stern that had been cut off. But the bottom was too cluttered with rocks. So the team abandoned that area and focused farther south, where the boat's bow had drifted. There the bottom turned out to be smooth and sandy. About four miles from the collision site, the sonar identified an intriguing target. Robot lights revealed a Mark 8 torpedo and a Mark 18 launcher tube, which the Navy said in a statement were used by the PT 109's class of boats until 1944. Side-scan sonar images of the site are very conclusive, Dr. Ballard said. They reveal a buried object about 20 feet wide - the PT boat's width - and more than 40 feet long. The length, he said, easily corresponds to the dimensions of the engine room where the three motors powering the boat were located. Yesterday, Dr. Ballard said his investigation was unable to determine whether the Japanese destroyer had cut PT 109 in two, as some survivors recalled. Circumstantial evidence, he said, suggested that perhaps 90 percent of the boat lay at the discovery site, to be covered and uncovered by shifting sands. We're not divulging the exact location, he said.

-Caveat Lector- Dale, Having read only the introduction, I still disagree with his major premise. While he is right on target about the evils of financing the government through (what has become) the orthodox method of creating interest bearing debt with the interest going to the private bankers, I can't agree that non-interest bearing debt is much better. The intrusion of government into areas forbidden it by the constitution is almost directly proportional to government spending, much of it fueled by debt accumulation. Fox News Channel anchor Shepard Smith will go unpunished for what police say
was aggravated
assault with a motor vehicle.
On Friday, Nov. 17, during the Florida presidential election fiasco, Smith was
arrested for driving his car into another reporter who was standing in a parking space
she attempted to save for a friend. The victim, freelance journalist Maureen Walsh of
Tallahassee, was hospitalized and released later the same day with bruises on her
knees and legs. According to Sgt. Edwin Maxwell, Walsh was standing across the
street from the state capitol when Smith drove up and shouted some profanities at
her and basically just struck her, striking her at the knees, which threw her up on the
car, he told the St. Petersburg Times.
After a few case-management hearings between attorneys and the court, the
charges against Smith were dropped, said the Leon County state attorney's office.
Smith, who used to be a reporter for 20th Century Television's A Current Affair, was
arrested and charged with aggravated battery with a motor vehicle. The felony
charge came with a $10,000 bail price tag, which Smith produced so he could return
to work. The story, while reported briefly by local publications and wire reports,
quickly fell off the media's radar.

The super-star television personality also went unpunished by his employer, the Fox
News Network. Fox spokeswoman Irena Stefan characterized the case earlier this
year as a non-story, saying there is no news to report here. She also explained that
Smith had not been reprimanded by the network because no charge has been
made.
On the contrary, Smith was charged with a felony the day of the offense. The charge
was later downgraded to a misdemeanor not an uncommon practice, according to
the state attorney's office and the anchor pleaded not guilty.
Smith anchors Fox New Channel's Fox Report weeknights at 7 p.m. Eastern.

Hiding $6 billion in cleanup liabilities is a world-class accounting scandal in the same league as WorldCom or ENRON, said Markey. The report makes clear that oil companies are refusing to disclose the soaring cost of their existing liability on the North Slope, a potentially massive accounting issue that needs to be addressed before it is sprung on unsuspecting investors, workers and the public. In addition, the report is a powerful indictment of the existing federal and state permitting process, which allows private oil and gas development on public lands using permits that are so vague and financial assurances so inadequate that the public interest in restoring these lands may never be redeemed. The lawmaker also released two letters he is sending today in response to the report seeking action from the Department of Interior and from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). In the letter to SEC Chairman Harvey Pitt, Markey noted how recent experience had reminded everyone of the costs of failing to be vigilant when accounting gimmicks are used to hide a company´s true financial condition, and he asked the SEC to demand a true accounting of the size and scope of the dismantlement, removal and restoration (DRR) cleanup liability of each of the oil companies active on the North Slope of Alaska. In Markey´s letter to Interior Secretary Norton, he demanded that the Department of Interior undertake the actions recommended by the GAO report to reform the bonding system. These reforms would ensure that the oil and gas industry, not the public taxpayer, shoulders the risk of failing to set aside the resources to do the necessary restoration of our public land following oil and gas development. The GAO report raised new concerns about the state of the dismantlement, removal and restoration (DRR) activities on the state-owned lands in the Prudhoe Bay area. Although the inadequacies of these DRR activities have long been recognized, the Army Corps of Engineers largely defers to the state regarding permits and restoration requirements on federally-permitted wetlands. Moreover, of immediate concern to Rep. Markey as well as the GAO, are how DRR the new federal leases on federal land in the 23-million acre National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPRA) will be overseen and ensured. New leasing began there in 1999, and the Bush Administration just issued a second round of leases in NPRA on June 3, 2002. It is clear from this report that the Interior Department has delegated its public responsibilities to a few giant oil companies when it comes to restoring public lands, Markey continued. Both the Department and the industry have a very lax definition of what will be required and how much they will have to pay. The failure to impose those requirements in the leases we are issuing today could guarantee permanent damage on these ecologically- sensitive public lands for centuries to come. In recommendations for Executive action, the GAO urges the Secretary of Interior to instruct the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to issue specific dismantlement, removal and restoration (DRR) requirements and to review the adequacy of its financial assurance program in order to ensure that the lands of the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska are properly restored after oil and gas activities cease. (page 78) In recommendations for Congressional action, the GAO notes that any future decision to open up new federal lands to oil and gas activities should consider including specific restoration goals and specific financial assurances sufficient to meet those goals. -Caveat Lector- MEDIUM RARE By Jim Rarey July 8, 2002 THE ANDERSEN DIVERSION Magicians are not the only ones who have mastered the art of prestidigitation (sleight of hand). Anyone who has watched the con man at a carnival work the shell game (a pea or marble under one of three shells) knows it is almost impossible to watch both hands at the same time. The trick is to get attention on the hand that is not manipulating the shells while the other hand does the dirty work. The "prosecution" of Arthur Andersen was a shell game to divert our attention from Enron. While prosecutors and the congress concentrated on the one-count indictment for paper shredding, Enron faded into the background. The worst case scenario for Arthur Andersen, upon conviction, was a maximum fine of $500,000 with no one going to jail. (You cant put a corporation in jail.) The fine would be inconsequential in the overall monetary exposure of the company. The only other consequence of a conviction would be that the SEC would bar the company from certifying financial statements for companies listed on the stock exchange. That was not a concern either because it was plain that Arthur Andersen was finished as a viable company. All the perpetrators have to do is get a job with another firm and they are back in business. There is plenty of evidence to prosecute not only Andersen, but a number of its clients, involved investment banks, brokerage firms, stock analysts and rating services under the RICO statute as continuing criminal enterprises. That possibility has never been raised by the media, Justice Department or anyone in Congress and there is probably a good reason (from their interest) that they havent. To understand the huge ramifications of the Enron debacle, it is necessary to clarify what the company did and who facilitated it. The media would have us believe Enron created a number of "independent" partnerships (over 3,000) to hide debt. The debt aspect is a red herring. In order to set up the partnerships, Enron had three hurdles to overcome. The first was SEC reporting and restrictions on companies involved in securities transactions. This was accomplished when an Enron lobbyist obtained a waiver from all the requirements of the 1940 Investment Company Act from the SEC headed by Clinton appointee Arthur Levitt (now a senior analyst at the Carlyle Group). The existence of the waiver was first reported by Insight Magazine and discussed in this writers article, "Enronitis a Communicable Disease." The second hurdle was an accounting rule that an unrelated person or company must own at least a laughable 3% of the "independent" partnership. It was the task of the investment bankers to round up those investors. Some of the banks put up the money themselves. The accounting rules, usually described as Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), are promulgated by the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), a private organization. In February of this year, the FASB finally got around to tightening up some of the rules on the partnerships officially known as "Special Purpose Entities." The FASB has been chaired by Edmund L. Jenkins for the last five years up to his resignation at the end of his five-year term in June of this year. Jenkins, prior to becoming chairman of the FASB had 38 years of experience with an accounting firm including as the Managing Partner for its Professional Standards Group. That firm was Arthur Andersen. The third hurdle was an Enron policy that prohibited an Enron officer from participating in the independent partnerships (which also would have been prohibited by SEC rules had the waiver not been obtained). The Enron Board of Directors waived its own conflict of interest rules to allow Enrons Chief Financial Officer (CFO) manage the partnerships. The partnerships then proceeded to flood the securities market with stock and bond offerings. Billions of dollars worth of securities were sold but where the proceeds (money) went is still a mystery. One of the first things an honest auditor will do is perform a cash reconciliation. This is not just verifying bank reconciliations. It involves analyzing all operations generating cash and expenses draining cash to determine how much cash should be on hand. Obviously, this is not possible if the auditor doesnt see all the pieces of the company. It still is not clear if Arthur Andersen had access to the books of the partnerships. That may be academic now that Enron has sold its major (securities) trading operations to UBS in Switzerland along with the records. Incredibly, at last report, investigators and Congress have not even requested (much less subpoenaed) bank records. Could those billions of dollars have been laundered to other entities or individuals? Who knows? But even those huge amounts may pale in comparison to another possibility. Even with the legitimacy of the Bush presidency in question, the Conservatives -- those with the Far Right agenda -- grabbed the raw political power that Gergen predicted would be the outcome of that election. The abuse of power in the guise of pushing an agenda which the majority of the electorate voted against would now become a perverted rule of law. The Far Right transformed into the Far Reich. We need only to look at Bush's nominations and appointments to fully appreciate this tactic. Corporate America's cronies were placed in every powerful position within the Bush administration. From Alcoa's O'Neil as Secretary of Treasury to Enron's White as the Secretary of Army, this administration represents Totalitarian Corporatism. And what precisely does Totalitarian Corporatism look like and how does this play out in the United States? Will the outcomes be any different for America than they were for Germany? When most people hear the word fascism they think of racism and anti-Semitism, the hallmarks of the totalitarian regimes of Mussolini and Hitler. But do not forget there is an economic policy component of fascism known as corporatism, an essential ingredient of economic totalitarianism (DiLorenzo 1994). This is why corporate leaders played key roles in financing Hitler as Chancellor and George W. Bush's run for the White House. Corporate heads from the United States, England and Germany financed Hitler's rise to power. These same powerful worldwide forces from the Military-Industrial Complex, Oil, Energy, and Media spent millions of dollars to influence the American 2000 election. -Caveat Lector- FALWELL CONFIDENTIAL DATE: July 11, 2002 FROM: Jerry Falwell Pledge Case Was A Fraud From the Get-Go Atheist firebrand Michael Newdow brought suit against the Pledge of Allegiance by proclaiming his eight-year-old daughter was offended by its recitation in her public school classroom. That entire case is a sham. In a conversation with one of my staff members on Wednesday, Rich Chaffin, pastor of the Laguna Calvary Chapel Church, verified that the young girl actually attends Sunday school at his church and loves the Lord Jesus Christ. The little girl's mother is a Sunday school teacher there. Furthermore, the girl's mother, Sandra Banning, has sent a statement to members of Congress that spells out the conniving of this father in the high-profile case. In her discussions with me, [my daughter] expressed sadness about the decision, said Banning. I assured her that this was a long process and there were many steps before the Pledge would be changed and the words 'under God' removed. Hearing this, she told me that it was okay because she will still whisper 'one nation under God' and no one will hear her and know she is breaking the law, she said. Banning added that she was concerned that the American public would be led to believe that my daughter is an atheist. And why wouldn't the nation believe such a notion when that is what Mr. Newdow portrayed to be the reality of the case. My heart goes out to that little girl. It is now apparent that this atheist glory hound has used his daughter to gain national prominence. He has used his daughter to promote his own godless agenda. WorldNetDaily has now reported that as a result of this actuality, Michael Newdow is attempting to reframe the basis of his lawsuit as injuring his right as a parent to direct the religious upbringing of his child. Mr. Newdow will apparently do anything - even manipulate his own daughter - in order to enact his personal quest for fame and leftist activism. His story always seems to be changing in this quest to kick God out of school. The Associated Press reported that he was trying to raise his daughter as an atheist, but now he denies even that allegation. I wonder now if the American Civil Liberties Union, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, the American Atheists, liberal Hollywood and the rest of the crusaders of abject secularism will continue to rally behind this man. The thing is, Mr. Newdow will very well fade into obscurity now, but other despisers of our nation's Judeo-Christian heritage and our history of reliance on God will come to the forefront to take up his battle. We have seen now that his legal challenge of under God in the Pledge now has judicial endorsement - at least at the loony Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco. That court unbelievably found that the Pledge sends a message to unbelievers that they are outsiders, not full members of the political community. It's almost funny that men of esteem would actually write such a decision. But it's too tragic to laugh. That ruling, should it stand, would actually prevent young students in nine Western states from reciting the present words of the Pledge in their classrooms. WHAT CAN WE DO? The poll also showed that most Israeli Jews are opposed to Israeli Arabs moving in to their apartment buildings. Only a quarter of the Jews responding said that they were unopposed. Title: Smoke em if you got em -Caveat Lector- Britain to Stop Arresting Most Private Users of Marijuana By WARREN HOGE LONDON, July 10 Britain, which has one of the highest rates of cannabis use in Europe, said today that it was relaxing its laws on marijuana smoking, keeping the practice theoretically illegal but making private use in discreet amounts no longer subject to arrest. The decision, announced by Home Secretary David Blunkett in the House of Commons, stirred criticism from the Conservative opposition and some Labor politicians and prompted the country's former antidrug chief to resign as a government adviser because, he said, Britain is moving further toward decriminalization than any other country in the world. Mr. Blunkett tempered his announcement, which takes effect next July and puts cannabis on a par with antidepressants and steroids, by saying he would also raise the punishment for marijuana dealing and step up drug education and treatment for abusers. An estimated five million people in Britain regularly use marijuana, and government data show that its use has risen sharply in the last 20 years. A study published last year on drug habits in the European Union showed that 20 to 25 percent of adults in Britain used marijuana about the same rate as shown for Denmark, France, Ireland, the Netherlands and Spain. The government action followed recommendations of a parliamentary committee in May, which said a new attitude of tolerance would give drug policy greater credibility among young people and help the police direct resources toward heroin and cocaine. Britain has the most drug-related deaths of any country in the European Union, with heroin cited as the principal cause. The parliamentary committee also suggested reclassifying the drug Ecstasy, but Mr. Blunkett said he had rejected that advice. Several other European countries have already relaxed their drug laws. The Netherlands has legalized marijuana, while Luxembourg has ended jail sentences for marijuana possession. Spain and Italy do not jail people caught with drugs meant for personal use. Last year Portugal eliminated jail time for possession of small amounts of any illegal drug. Under the British reform, possession of marijuana would no longer be considered an arrestable offense. Though that will not take effect for a year, from now on any police action will be limited to issuing a warning and seizing the drug. Mr. Blunkett countered suggestions that Britain was going soft on drugs by saying the police would retain the right to arrest users in cases like smoking outside schools or in the presence of children. The Home Office emphasized that any marijuana cafes where the drug was sold and used openly remained illegal and would be closed. It is critical that police can maintain public order, Mr. Blunkett said. Where cannabis possession is linked to aggravated behavior that threatens public order, the police will retain the power of arrest. Scotland Yard said it welcomed the reclassification of the drug combined with maintaining a discretionary police power to intervene. The drug spokesman for the Association of Chief Police Officers, Andy Hayman, said, The retention of police power of arrest will enable the police to have greater flexibility in dealing with incidents on the street. Mr. Blunkett insisted that today's move did not constitute legalizing marijuana. All controlled drugs are harmful and will remain illegal, he said. We must concentrate our efforts on the drugs that cause the most harm, while sending a credible message to young people. But Keith Hellawell, Prime Minister Tony Blair's onetime antidrug chief, said the new policy would virtually be decriminalization of cannabis, and this is, quite frankly, giving out the wrong message. He coupled the announcement of his resignation from a government advisory post with a strong attack on the policy, saying it would damage communities and lead to more, not less, drug use. It's actually a technical adjustment which in the reality of the law doesn't make a great deal of difference, Mr. Hellawell said, but it's being bandied about by people as a softening of the law. He said that there had been an increase in marijuana smoking among young people and that more people were seeking treatment for its effects. Is the government going to abolish Social Security? Notice the key phrase in the above quotation: _threatened political damage to the White House_. Do not think for a minute that the White House cares to do any more than cover its behind. This bit of cheap Washington theatre would be palatable if it were not so obscenely laughable. Consider, for example, the oxymoron of government accounting. There is no such thing. Perhaps you have heard of the Pentagon budget. Or Social Security. Perhaps you have heard of the federal Bureau of Indian Affairs. The bureau, custodian of millions of dollars of tribal trust money, um, well -- _cannot account for the money_. Rockwell, Jr. Forget gridlock and partisanship, the US Senate has found something besides attacking other countries to agree on: attacking business right here at home. No one can accuse these guys of being soft on crime, so long as the alleged crime occurs within the private sector, and involves the always-vulnerable businessman. Should supposedly defrauding shareholders be a distinct crime punishable by up to ten years in prison, thereby replacing the existing system in which defrauding shareholders falls under the category of mail and wire fraud? Yes, said the Senate in a 100-to-0 vote. Should the government prohibit companies from docking the pay of employees who scheme with government investigators? Yes, 100 to 0. Should the period of time in which investors can file lawsuits against companies to recoup losses due to alleged securities fraud be extended? Yes, 100 to 0. Should it be easier to prosecute people for altering or destroying their records when a government agency is investigating a corporation, even if the investigation isn't yet official? Yes, 100 to 0. Should all penalties of all sorts be expanded? Yes, 100 to 0. John The Bomber McCain caught the reigning fascistic spirit of the moment: Until somebody responsible goes to jail for a significant amount of time, I'm not sure these people are going to get the message. The message is: all the crooks are in business, and only great government can save us. The proposals to crush, thrash, smash, and otherwise slam business are raining down hard, with Republicans joining with Democrats in sheer demagogic hatred of the capitalist system itself. None of this has to do with a conviction that WorldCom and Enron and the rest really committed fraud in the usual sense. The problem with these companies (and they are not typical) is that they took part in a more general fraud called the New Economy: the idea that the Federal Reserve can create limitless prosperity through money creation and lower interest rates. Had these companies' forecasts of infinite product demand, and thus infinitely increasing stock prices panned out, nobody would be complaining. But the Fed's boom turned to bust, as it must, and the political parasites had to find someway to deflect the blame. Remember the scale of what we are dealing with. By the late 1990s, tens of millions of people had grown accustomed to checking their online holdings daily, and watching them grow. Regular citizens became day-traders. Folks were exuberant as their portfolios rose to double and triple expected figures. Visions of early retirement and the lush life danced in their heads. Everyone was a financial genius. But by this year, these same people have seen their once-fat portfolios grow shockingly skinny. While people can deal with stock-market losses, they cannot understand how in a mere 12 to 19 months, trillions could have vanished, and their exuberant visions too. There is something intuitively correct about the average person's suspicions. It doesn't make sense that so much could be wiped out so quickly, and people are right to assume that powerful people are rigging the game. The business cycle isn't an act of nature. It is brought about by shady characters working behind the scenes. So Washington is attempting to turn public anger away from the guilty the Federal Reserve and the politicians who cheered on its credit runup to business. All this hot air about corporate fraud is designed to permit people to believe that their portfolios were looted by CEOs with shredding machines. You say: nobody is stupid enough to believe that! Think again. In the early 1930s, this was precisely the view promoted by FDR and widely believed among the general public. This was also the import of Bush's anti-business rave on Wall Street, which Republicans celebrated and Democrats denounced for not going far enough. This is why the Senate is passing stupid resolutions and voting on bad legislation, which will muck matters up further in predictable and unpredictable ways. Not even Wall Street experts have a clear fix on why markets fall, other than some general lack of confidence that plays on itself. Not one in a thousand would identify the loose credit of the 1990s as the cause of the boom, and fewer still could explain how that boom unraveled and why. Every economic downturn in modern history has been accompanied by a boom-time accounting scandal, leading to more regulation. This is why ignorance of economics in particular Austrian economics is so dangerous. Something about the business cycle seems fishy, even crooked, but precisely what does not flow from intuition alone.
