To get back to the broader point of the previous poster, I'm honestly a lot 
less creeped out by the idea that Bush has the power to order people 
assassinated or disappeared (though obviously that's a really bad thing) 
than with the idea that, sooner or later, that power is going to get spread 
out to a whole bunch of people, some of whom will be getting their 
performance evaluated based on how many suspected terrorists they've had 
killed or disappeared.  "Gee, Fred, you're showing up to work on time, 
you're filling your paperwork out properly, but I'm afraid you're just not 
being effective enough at rooting out Al Qaida operatives.  I'm sure you 
can do better, though--just find me five operatives in the next week"

Mike Echols is Dead

The Monterey Herald is reporting that notorious network vigilante, author,
founder of Better a Millstone, and self-described enemy of pedophilia,
Walter Harlan (Mike) Echols II, was found dead in his jail cell over the
weekend, where he was serving 150 days for violating his probation on an
earlier charge of making terrorist threats.  Mr. Echols was also awaiting
trial on new charges of indecent exposure and resisting arrest.

Before becoming an Internet stalker and social parasite, Mr. Echols
authored several soft-core books based on true-crime stories of adolescent
boys being sexually abused.  The best known of these was "I Know My First
Name is Steven", which was made into a mini-series starring Cory Nemec.

To Internet Denizens, Mr. Echols was best known for grepping the net for
public discussions of sex, censorship, and age of consent laws, and
harrassing people holding left of center positions on these issues by
placing them on his Web page of "Internet Child Sex Predators and Child
Pornographers and NAMBLA Members." He would include as much personal
information as he could dig up, including work and home addresses and
phone numbers, and suggestions that any children living nearby were in
danger of being sexually assaulted.  He made frequent ranting phone calls
to people, their employers and landlords, and nearby businesses, in
pursuit of this agenda.

Mr. Echols had a lengthy criminal record, including child abuse, breaking
and entering, being a fugitive from justice, assault, and was once
referred to by the governor of Colorado as "a man who has no respect for
the law."

Mr. Echols' final downfall began when he bumped his leg on a bus, and
attempted to harrass California transit officials into a $100,000
settlement, by threating to kill them, and to destroy their computer
systems.  He was convicted, and sentenced to six months in jail, of which
he served two, before being placed on probation, and forbidden as a
condition of probation from going near a bus.  Mr. Echols said at his
trial, that this was all a plot by "pedophiles" to destroy him, and after
giving Mr. Echols some time to produce evidence of this odd allegation, he
was given an additional fine for "wasting the court's time."

He was arrested again around Thanksgiving, in two separate pants-dropping
incidents, one where he boarded a bus in violation of his probation,
refused to pay, and dropped his pants when asked to leave, and another in
which he is alleged to have dropped his pants and waved his genitalia at a
police officer escorting him away from a place he had been living
illegally.

Sentenced to 150 days for the probation violation, he was realeased on his
own recognizance to seek medical treatment for heart problems, and escaped
from the hospital, only to be later re-arrested when the unamused judge
issued a bench warrant.

He was finally returned to jail to serve his sentence, ranting that
Monterey officials were plotting against him, and was found dead in this
cell over the weekend.  At the time, his attorneys were attempting to get
him declared incompentent to stand trial on the new charges, due to his
obvious mental problems.

Better a Millstone, Mr. Echols' organization, was incorporated for him in
the state of Nevada by a born again friend of his, who happened to be a
federal suspect in a series of abortion clinic bombings.  Despite this,
and the fact that Mr. Echols had a long criminal record, the organization
was awarded IRS 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization status, giving Mr.
Echols' harrassment operation a quasi-official status.

Echols' antics were enabled by a large slew of people, like Ernie Allen of
the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, who secretly
enjoyed seeing the illegal harrassment of people critical of the
government's sex and porn agenda, and took every opportunity to minimize
his illegal behavior, and portray him as a poor misguided soul who helped
children instead of a habitual criminal.

Echols first came to my attention a number of years ago, when I had an
encounter with Noreen Gosch, a well-known child sex conspiracy nut, in a
CNN chatroom.  Ms. Gosch promotes a theory that there is an international
Satanic pedophile conspiracy, run out of the CIA's MK-Ultra program, which
ritually abuses children.  This, according to Ms. Gosch, is done for the
purpose of producing multiple personalities, so that the children may be
used as operatives in order to compromise world leaders and other powerful
people.

A number of weeks after suggesting in the CNN chatroom to Ms. Gosch that
she was in need of the services of a competent mental health professional,
I did a web search of my name, and to my surprise, found that I had been
listed on Echols' web site as an "Internet Child Sex Predator."  Even more
amusing, Echols listed my location as Salt Lake City, apparently after
looking up the IP I had used to access CNN, which was that of an Internet
provider in that city.

Hello from  Hollywood... Me and Greg left Saturday. The fly 
so was long, 
we stop  at Las Vegas to change planes .Las Vegas look from the plane 
like a peace of gold.. I tried this gambling machines...I play only with 2 
dollars. and I lost. We arrive in LA early  in the morning. The Hotel 
is nice here, the people were very friendly. We was for a walk on Rodeo 
drive. What a shops WOW, too bad we don't have money for shopping...plus its 
very expensive, we bought a sweaters though. We rent a Jeep and we drive around 
Hollywood and Beverly Hills, we got lost 2 times, that was 
fun. Jasmine is doing fine. She is home, her family visit her. She call us 
few times, Greg said she sound in a good spirits. Greg's cousin Andre is now 
here from Jamaica, he will be our new assistant, Greg had to fire our 
previous assistant about 3 weeks ago, he had a drug problem. Andre is a very 
nice person.. I think he will be a very good assistant... We just got our 
tickets to the American Music Awards, after the awards we are going to the 
private party of Dick Clark. I don't know who is he, but Greg says he is 
very important person in the entertaining  busyness, and one of the 
reasons we are here. I cant wait to make the next newsletter.:)

Nonsense. Icelandic is little changed from the Old Norse of 1000 A.D. 
Icelanders can easily read the sagas without help; modern Danes and

Beowulf.  I took a class in "The Canterbury Tales," in the original 
with a side-by-side translation, from a Chaucer scholar. A few 
recognizable words, a few familar patterns. But quite clearly there has 
been significant evolution of English in the past half-millennium. By 
contrast, the Koran is readable in the original by modern Arabs.

Other such examples abound.

Since the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States, public
interest in informal systems of transferring money around the world,
particularly the hawala system, has increased. The reason is the hawala
system's alleged role in financing illegal and terrorist activities, along
with its traditional role of transferring money between individuals and

is one of the IFT systems that exist under different names in various
regions of the world. It is important, however, to distinguish the hawala
system from the term hawala, which means "transfer" or "wire" in Arabic
banking jargon. The hawala system refers to an informal channel for
transferring funds from one location to another through service
providers-known as hawaladars-regardless of the nature of the transaction
and the countries involved. While hawala transactions are mostly initiated
by emigrant workers living in a developed country, the hawala system can
also be used to send funds from a developing country, even though the
purpose of the funds transfer is usually different (see box).



How does the system work?

An initial transaction can be a remittance from a customer (CA) from country
A, or a payment arising from some prior obligation, to another customer (CB)
in country B. A hawaladar from country A (HA) receives funds in one currency
from CA and, in return, gives CA a code for authentication purposes. He then
instructs his country B correspondent (HB) to deliver an equivalent amount
in the local currency to a designated beneficiary (CB), who needs to
disclose the code to receive the funds. HA can be remunerated by charging a
fee or through an exchange rate spread. After the remittance, HA has a
liability to HB, and the settlement of their positions is made by various
means, either financial or goods and services. Their positions can also be
transferred to other intermediaries, who can assume and consolidate the
initial positions and settle at wholesale or multilateral levels.

The settlement of the liability position of HA vis-a-vis HB that was created
by the initial transaction can be done through imports of goods or "reverse
hawala." A reverse hawala transaction is often used for investment purposes
or to cover travel, medical, or education expenses from a developing
country. In a country subject to foreign exchange and capital controls, a
customer (XB) interested in transferring funds abroad for, in this case,
university tuition fees, provides local currency to HB and requests that the
equivalent amount be made available to the customer's son (XA) in another
country (A). Customers are not aware if the transaction they initiate is a
hawala or a reverse hawala transaction. HB may use HA directly if funds are
needed by XB in country A or indirectly by asking him to use another
correspondent in another country, where funds are expected to be delivered.
A reverse hawala transaction does not necessarily imply that the settlement
transaction has to involve the same hawaladars; it could involve other
hawaladars and be tied to a different transaction. Therefore, it can be
simple or complex. Furthermore, the settlement can also take place through
import transactions. For instance, HA would settle his debt by financing
exports to country B, where HB could be the importer or an intermediary.




Why hawala developed

In earlier times, IFT systems were used for trade financing. They were
created because of the dangers of traveling with gold and other forms of
payment on routes beset with bandits. Local systems were widely used in
China and other parts of East Asia and continue to be in use there. They go
under various names-Fei-Ch'ien (China), Padala (Philippines), Hundi (India),
Hui Kuan (Hong Kong), and Phei Kwan (Thailand). The hawala (or hundi) system
now enjoys widespread use but is historically associated with South Asia and
the Middle East. At present, its primary users are members of expatriate
communities who migrated to Europe, the Persian Gulf region, and North
America and send remittances to their relatives on the Indian subcontinent,
East Asia, Africa, Eastern Europe, and elsewhere. These emigrant workers
have reinvigorated the system's role and importance. While hawala is used
for the legitimate transfer of funds, its anonymity and minimal
