[darktable-user] DT 4.6 crash on copy & import

2024-01-23 Thread Frank J.
Before you upgrade from Darktable 4.4 to 4.6.0 please switch *off* the
option "/recursive directory/" in the import-dialog window.

If this option is on, DT will freeze when attemting to copy & import.

If you have already upgraded you can't switch it from the gui, because
the option is in the window that freezes.
Then edit "~/.config/darktable/darktablerc" and change
"ui_last/import_recursive=TRUE" to "FALSE".

There is an option in the storage part 'look for updated XMP file on

Is it enabled on your Linux system?
Maybe this will help?

No, this Option works every time at the start of Darktable and compares
all imported pictures for changes (from an other instance?).

This is not necassary when importing *new* pictures (without or with

Now I get an idea, what the reason for my problems may be.

Because Ubuntu 20.04 on my mashine had some problems on startup, last
week I decided to do the LTS-upgrade earlier then 22.04.1 is released on
4th August.

I got DT 4.0 from PPA "unbuntuhandbook".
After upgrade to some new nvidia-drivers, the openCL-Support in DT was
fixed.

But one of my displays (EIZO) seemed to be out of calibration, it looks
a bit too green after the upgrade.

I found, that DisplayCAL (3.8.x) is not longer in the sources in 22.04
because of the dependencies to python 2, with is not longer supported.
But there is a new projekt "DisplayCAL-PY3" porting the code to python
3. It can be installed with "pip install DisplayCAL" which gives you a
version 3.9.6, still in progress but works.

The calibration of my new ASUS-display was done in half an hour. But the
calibration of my older EIZO (has run more then 8000 hours), takes 2
days with many attempts. Each run with other results, some lookes green,
some looked magenta, some had bad messages.
Sometimes even the hardware-defined RGB-start-point drifted from one
attempt to the next.

Each time the result was different, the colors seemed to be "unstable".
I worried, the last days of my diplay has come.

At least (after a dozen tries) I got a icc-profile that seems to work.

May this problems result from an unstable implementation of
colormanagement in wayland in Ubuntu 22.04?

Or should I begin to save some money for a new display?
Why does Ubuntu do an upgrade to a system without a stable colormanagement?

Re: [darktable-user] Setting up darktable newly from scratch

2022-07-10 Thread Frank J.

Hallo Peter,
a new setup and a new import will take long time and maybe the result is
nearly the same as before because database and xmp-files "should have"
the same content.

But you will loose your preferences, styles, preview-cache, ...

> some things were .. not copyed

You can use "preferences / storage / look for updated xmp files on
startup" to synchronize the database with the xmp's.
Changes on pictures, done with a second system (laptop/desktop) will be
imported.
Switch to "on", restart darktable, switch "off" after sync for a quicker
start.

> a lot of unnecessary things have accumulated in the database.

Have a look at "history stack" / "compress history".
This will delete all iterations and attempts and reduce the stack to the
final result.

(This compression will not happen with a re-import.)

To clean up you can manually delete unused styles or unused tags
(assigned to 0 pictures).

To address your specific questions:

  * Is this a good idea? - Don't know since you haven't been more

  * As the xmp files are also stored on the external drive with the

darktable where to look for the files, it will also find the
sidecar files associated with the image files, if they're
maintained in the same folder as the images.
  * Do I have to delete  the config and cache folders manually? - If
you're uninstalling a prior version of darktable, first back up
all your darktable user config and library files (on Windows -
C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Local\darktable), then delete the

Same effect here.

I use Olympus-cameras, RAW only, correction +/- 0 EV in the Camera.

After importing in DT the default in module "exposure" is "+0.5 EV" but
this is too dark for nearly all pictures.

I need to use a correction between +1.5 and +2.5 EV for the best look.

This is not new in DT 3.8 but in 3.6 (or 3.4?) with the change to

2020-04-20 Thread Frank J.

Am 19.04.20 um 20:48 schrieb J. Paul Bissonnette:

Is focus stacking possible in darktable 3.0.2?
I am using an Olympus OM D E-M5 mark 2 with the latest firmware.
The reason I am asking is that the stacked jpg made by the camera is so
much clearer than the stacked dng file from darktable.
I maybe doing this all wrong I am assuming that focus stacking is a
form of HDR and used the Create HDR button.

Hallo Paul,
I do focus-stacking with the following workflow:

1. Export minimal pre-processed pictures of the stack from darktable
into a folder.

2. Align the stack with control-points

3. Compose the final picture from sharp parts

4. copy exif-tags to the result (time, camera)

5. re-import the result into darktable for final processing

Examples:

1.
You can crop the pictures but all must habe the same size.
Use copy&paste history stack for all pictures.
You can use 16bit TIFF for better quality.

2.
align_image_stack -v -m -a algn 20200420_0001.tif 20200420_0002.tif
20200420_0003.tif

Without "-a " the dt-exports are overwritten with aligned versions.
With "-p file" a *.pto is created. That is a hugin-Projekt for manual
interaction.

3.
enfuse "$@" --exposure-weight=0 --saturation-weight=0 \
  --contrast-weight=1 --hard-mask --contrast-window-size=5 \
  --compression=92 --output=stacked.jpg algn*.tif

Hugin can be used as a GUI to manually define some
inclusion-/exclusion-masks for step 3. But most stacking is well done
without hugin.

Step 3 can be done from hugin-gui.

There is a LUA-Script "enfuse professional" to assist you in this
workflow. It can be found at:

https://www.multimedia4linux.de/index.php/bildbearbeitung/darktable/darktable-plugin-enfuse-professional

But this LUA-Script will not work for a stack from your "Olympus OM-D
E-M5 Mk.III" in some cases.

The reason is: Olymus has two modes for focus-stacking

 A. Focus-BKT ON, but Focus-Stacking OFF
 B. Focus-BKT ON, and Focus-Stacking ON

Mode A will take a set auf RAW-Pictures. Beginning with the focussed
point, moving to the background. This will work with LUA "enfuse
professional".

Mode B will take a set of RAW and JPG and will process the stacked
picture in the camera as JPG, as you described.
The first picture will be taken at the focussed point. Then the focus
jumps nearer and then stepwise to the back.
Before processing this stack with "align_image_stack" in step 3 you have
to *sort this pictures by focus-point*.
"align_image_stack" compares the pictures pair-wise in the given order
to find the control-points. The first taken picture will not match with
the second (nearest). The position of the first picture will be skipped.
It is possible that the two pictures before and after this position
don't have overlapping sharp areas when this area is very small.

When using the LUA-Script "enfuse professional" you have no chance to
manually sort the pictures by "fucus-point" without renaming the pictures.

Therefore I dont use "enfuse professional" but small shell-scripts
(*.sh) on my Linux-System.

A correction with hugin is not possible when using "enfuse
professional". The aligned files are in /tmp and will be deletet. No
chance for taking them for a hugin-project.

Take care not to use lens-correction twice, in darktable and in the
LUA-Script.

The results auf "align_image_stack" + "enfuse" are better then the
internal stacking of the camera.

I got some results on stacks where the camera fails to stack.

Good luck.

Hi,
I have a similar workflow.

Import an development of the RAWs happens on a fast SSD, which has
limited space.

Older projects are moved to a slower HDD as archive.

There are two levels to optimize:

1. Move all images from a folder to a new folder in the archive from
WITHIN darktable. DT will remove the empty folder.

2. When accidently a folder is moved or renamed from outside DT, then
the foldername in "collect images"/"folders" is stroked thru.
There is a context (right mouseclick) "search filmroll" for a dialog to

Have a look at the shotcuts:

"z" zooms to "full" (picture = screen).
Thats ~25% (depending on camara and screen), but not 100%.

"cntr + z" adds focus-detection to this.

While holding "z" the arrow-keys (<-- -->) can be used to go to the

For this case "N items related to 1 style" I suggest to add a "foreign

SQL:

PRAGMA foreign_keys=OFF;
BEGIN TRANSACTION;
-- SELECT type, sql FROM sqlite_master WHERE tbl_name='style_items';
CREATE TABLE new_style_items (

  multi_priority INTEGER,
  multi_name VARCHAR(256),
FOREIGN KEY(styleid) REFERENCES styles(id) ON DELETE CASCADE

INSERT INTO new_style_items
(styleid,num,module,operation,op_params,enabled,
blendop_params,blendop_version,multi_priority,multi_name)
  SELECT styleid,num,module,operation,op_params,enabled,

 FROM style_items;
DROP TABLE style_items;
ALTER TABLE new_style_items RENAME TO style_items;
COMMIT TRANSACTION;
PRAGMA foreign_keys=ON;

-- SQL End

The result: Deleting a row in Table "styles" will also delete all
related items in table "style_items".

No orphaned rows will be left there.

I did not test this change whith my primary database and darktable
software, but only with a copy auf "data.db".

The system mounts the card with a card reader.

Pointing DT to the mount point is only possible with "import folder".
This will leave the fotos on the card and write the moint-point-path to

I would like to move the fotos from the temporarily mounted card to the

Thank you Tobias,
It works now and it finds a lot of unused thumbs in the cache.

PS.
The second script 'purge_non_existing_images.sh' worked fine.
It grabbed some Photos that are shown as scull. I removed them manually

It grabbed also some entries in the database that are not visible in

Not really common!
The database contains not only a simple link to the Raw-file in the
folder but also all steps of development in different modules, title,
tags and location.
And the cache contains a batch of previews.

Refreshing a temporarily not available folder (Server, NAS, USB-device)

Hi Tobias,
yes I see the timestamp.
I did some additional tests and found out what I did wrong.

The separator in the date-part of the timestamp should be ":" and not "-".
When I change the "Exif.Image.DateTimeOriginal" in the source-file
again, then remove from DT and re-import, then the timestamp is not only
visible and sortable but also translated to the german date-format.

And: It is used for the $-templates on export.

Sorry for the noise! My mistake.

[darktable-user] Issue with timestamp on export

2017-09-15 Thread Frank J.
Hi,

for sorting the exported JPGs by year and month, I want to include the
timestamp, when the picture was taken, into the filename on export.

The templates "$(EXIF_YEAR)_$(EXIF_MONTH)_$(EXIF_DAY)" from
http://www.darktable.org/usermanual/ch02s03s12.html.php seemed to be
right for this.
This works fine for pictures (RAW, JPG) that were taken with digital
cameras.

But my DT-archive includes 40 years of work since I scanned all my old
slides with a NIKON Coolscan 4000 ED.

I found, that I have to set for example
 $ exiv2 -M"set Exif.Image.DateTimeOriginal '1978-09-01 00:00:00'" \
   dia_f037_b0[1-9].jpg
BEFORE I import the scanned JPGs into DT.

Not "Exif.Image.DateTime" but only "Exif.Image.DateTimeOriginal" sets
the right timestamp in the database-column "images.datetime_taken" on
IMPORT.

But for this scanned pictures the templates "$(EXIF_YEAR)" etc. on
EXPORT do not work.
It seems "import" and "export" use different exif-time-values.

How can I use the values from the database-column
"images.datetime_taken" for the filename on export?

Hi,
try to edit the lensfun-data in "/usr/share/lensfun".

In file "compact-panasonic.xml" the entry

Panasonic
DMC-LX100
panasonicDMCLX100
2.21

Points to:

   panasonicDMCLX100

Add a new -File (or edit in compact-leica.xml?).

Copy model "DMC-LX100" as model "Leica D-Lux typ 109" into the new file.
Copy panasonicDMCLX100 into the new file.

The model must match exactly the text from the exif-Data.

Your changes will be erased with the next update of lensfun. Make a copy.
If it works, give a ticket to the lensfun-projekt.

For a while the name of my new mft-lens did not match excatly between
lensfun-data and exif-data. Editing this files helped my using
lens-correction in darktable until the error was fixed in lensfun.

Hi,
I'm a simple user, not a developer. So I don't really know, what is
planned for the future. But I think the rule is very simple:

As in every other programm with a Graphical User Interface (GUI) actions
from mouse-clicks or shortcuts are targeted to SELECTED objects.
So show the images in lighttable (icon "G" right on top of lighttable)
and select them. Then apply your tag to them.

Assigning tags to images, which are not selected and not even visible in
the gui would lead to unattended results.

It may be usefull to have different tags on the images of a group. How
can this be done when all images of a group gets always (silent in the
background) identical tags?

Yes, but you don't have to replace the complete HDD by SSD.

I have a small SSD (120 GB) for Linux (faster booting and program start)
and for Darktable-Development (Import, generate Thumbs, rating, tagging,

I had a look on my cache:

The size is < 5 GB for more than 300 GB pictures.
That is 2%. I think, that is not too much.
And the .cache/-folder can be excluded in backup.

> So I searced for a way to remove unused ones.

What ist unused?
A level-3- or -4-thumb, that will be used with z-key or ctl+z once a
year, is "nearly unused".

But you have more thumbs per level then pictures in the DT-database.
So I think they are orphaned, not only unused.
Your darktable has no knolledge about some of the thumbs.

> Simple way would be to delete all and rebuild all. But I
> think this could be done better.

Shure, maybe you can make it smarter.
But somtimes the simplest way is the best.

The sizes in my cace are:
0: 110 pixel, 1: 225, 2: 450, 3: 900, 4: 1200 pixel.

Begin with deleting level 3 and up.
~/.cache/darktable/mipmaps-d/4/ and .../3/.

You would miss nothing until you screw up your ligthttable to 1 picture
per row or use the z-key (zoom full).
You will have a short delay while DT is generating one thumb.
Only "used" thumbs are generated, no "unused".

Higher level will free more diskspace (per picture).

If you also delete the levels 0, 1, 2 it seems to be better to generate
it new like described in:

https://www.darktable.org/usermanual/ch01.html.php#darktable_generate_cache_commandline_parameters

This levels are used in "normal" lighttable-mode (3 to 5 pictures per
row). This is getting slowly, when darktable has to generate masses of
them while scrolling.

Hallo,
most the time I'm working with "collect images / *folders*"
rather then "collect images / film roll".
That works better for me. Maybe also for you?

There is an GUI option "number of folder levels to show in list" to
includes some sub-folders (with your HDR ...).

But there is a bug, that DT merges folders when one foldername is the
beginning of another one.
Example:
 ~/pictures/dt/2017/
 ~/pictures/dt/2017_A/

If you select "2017" you also see the pics in "2017_A".

I like to collect with *multiple criteria*, Example:
To see wich files need to get coordinates
"folder = ABC" exclude images "geotagging = tagged".
Then I see only the pictures to drop on the map.

I like to use *wildcards*, Example:

My scanned slides are named "slide_f999_p99.jpg".
Where f=Film and p=Picture in film and 99 = numbers.
To find all scanned slides from one film:
Collect Images: "filename = slide_f123_%".
Then I "select all" and tag filmtype and camera-model, which is not in
the exif-data of the scans.

Hallo,
I set the position in the Map in Darktable.
After export as JPEG your command "exiftool xxx.jpg | grep GPS" shows:

GPS Version ID : 2.2.0.0
GPS Latitude : 53 deg 58' 22.08" N
GPS Latitude Ref : North
GPS Longitude: 14 deg 8' 47.19" E
GPS Longitude Ref: East
GPS Position : 53 deg 58' 22.08" N, 14 deg 8' 47.19" E

Visible difference is: In your version "E" and "N" (East and North, or
West and South?) is missing.

If you don't use an icon but a command:

DT will start once with an english GUI.
The results will be the same, but it's easier to tell here about it.

To switch permanently you can set:

As far as I figured out, ist is not possible in Module "tagging".
But typing also searches for part of the text, not only the begin.

To browse the tags go to lighttable / collect images / tag.
First you see the grouped tags (group|sub-group|tag).
Last group is "uncategorized" where you find single-tags (without "|" ).

We discussed this just a few days ago. See thread:

My (ppa-) package maintainer [1] did all right.

The broken version of lensfun came from another ppa (Gimp ?).

To do (Ubuntu):
- Start synaptic
- search for lensfun
- force version 0.2.8 for this package

Sorry,
can you explain again, step by step?

When I reset "lens correction" it switches back to the default "thoby
fish-eye".
I don't like all my pics having curved lines, so I would like to have
"rectlinear" as default.
When I switch to "rectlinear" then the scale is to big, parts of the
picture are cut off. I have to use "auto scale" to reduce the loss.

Openening the next picture all is beginning from start.

Copy the history stack or "store new preset" always copy also "focal
length", "aperture" and "distance" to the new picture although this are
individual values, which should be taken from the exif-data, not from a
preset.

How can I get "rectlinear" correction with "auto scale" for each new
picture fitting the individual focal/aperture/distance-values of a
pictuture?

I have nearly 50K on my system.
I've no problems with watchching or developing my photos.

Export or creating thumbs is a bit slow because it's only an i3 with
graphics on board, no GPU. A'm working to change this soon ..

Slowest part, I think, is the tagging.
Maybe I'm tagging too much: place, persons, event, ...

For my old slide-scans I tag also film-type and camera-model, cause they
have no exif-data.

DT try to give my some intelligent suggestions while tagging.
For example: when I tag (the german word for) "house-cleaning", DT
suggests to tag also the name of my wife ;-)
  - really!

DT trys to analyse "pairs of tagging". The database-table "tagxtag" has
2.2 Million entries for my 45K pictures.
Typing in the tag-mask seems to freeze the programm. I have to wait many
seconds.
I would like to switch this feature off for faster work.

Nikon-Filmsanner [2] are still in use, although they are 10 years old,

As far as I know, Filmscanner has a Sensor-Row that move along the

This seems not to be a "Bayer style sensor" [1].

So (Camera-) RAW is not like (Scanner-) RAW ?

Hallo Michael,
yes, RAW from Nicon Coolscan is not supported.

I think a comment to the website wouldn't change this.
Think about putting an issue here:
https://redmine.darktable.org/projects/darktable/issues

But the developers need sample-Files.
I don't know if they feel the need to work for a "camera-type" that is
10 years old.

I'm owner of a "Nikon Super Coolscan 4000 ED" (firewire).
I scanned more than 8000 slides last year.
Most of them as jpg (8-bit-color). Filesize is 5 to 8 MByte.
The hardware can produce 14-bit-color-depth. Saving this as TIFF need a
lot of disk-space (130 MByte for each TIF).

I use Nikon-Scan-Software now but I'm thinking about VueScan to get RAW
from the scanner.
So I would support your issue to develop the scanner-RAW with the
Darktable-Tools.
Maybe Scanner-RAW ist quite different from Camera-Raw because of the
IR-Color-Channel for Digital-ICE.

  # Based on an idea of Antoine Beaupre

> You’re probably right, but I have found that darktable can handle a
hierarchical tag and a simple tag at the same time.

Yes, sure it can handle multiple *different* tags.
Klick on first tag *OR* second tag finds the same picture.

But importing the hierarchy from Shotwell means same tags, not different
tags.

Example:

Shotwell seems to search with "equal".
Tags are:
  "/persons"
+ "/persons/friends"
+ "/persons/friends/John Do"

Klick on "friends" searches: WHERE tags = '/persons/friends'

Darktable seems to search with SQL-"like".
Tag is "persons|friends|John Do".
Klick on "friends" searches: WHERE tags LIKE '/persons/friends%'.
The Wildcard % includes "John Do".

Wrong import:
  "|persons"
+ "|persons|friends"
+ "|persons|friends|John Do"

The SQL-LIKE-Search find more then one Tag pointing to the same set of
pictures. You have to use "SELECT DISTINCT .." to get every picture only
once.

> ... try to find anomalies in the tags.

Ideas:

- Do Ubuntu and Mac have the same coding (UTF-8)?
In Germany we have some special Characters (ä,ö,ü,ß) that can cause
some trouble. In Scandinavia they have some characters that I cant find
on my keyboard. When transferring the SQL-file (txt) from one system to
another you may use "save as ... UTF-8" in your editor.
Sometimes that is a problem when copying files from Windows (ANSI) to
Linux (UTF-8). Sometimes it is no Problem with characters like
a-z,A-Z,0-9 but often with special/national characters.

- Do you have characters in the tag, that are used in SQL: % ; ' " \
Darktable may handle this when typing it in the screen.
But you put it directly into the database.

> .. are you using darktable on a Mac now, or have you simple transferred from

Hallo Michael,
I had a similar problem last year. I had spend a lot of time for tagging
pictures in Shotwell.
Then I began to use Darktable and wanted to move the tags from the
Shotwell-Database to the Darktable-Database.

I made a python-script to do this in Darktable 1.6.9.
I reported in this mailing-list, have a look at my mail from 2015-11-28:

http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.graphics.darktable.user/8392

The pictures must be already imported in DT and in Shotwell with the
same name and path.
It only works for Pictures that has NOT TAGS in Darktable.
Only the tagging will be moved.

Have a closer look to hierarchical tags:
Darktable keeps all steps of the hirarchie in ONE tag.
Shotwell has one Tag for each step, getting longer step by step.
The script takes only the "deepest" tag for a picture.

When you have imported the tags with all steps from Shotwell this may be
the reason for your problems when selecting.
See the examples in the comments in my script.

Get the Script from:
http://www.fotodrachen.de/download/Shotwell2Darktable.zip

Sorry, the "ReadMe.txt" is a "LiesMich.txt" in german language.
But the comments in "shotwell2darktable_tagging.py" are written in
English, ... sometimes.

Hope it helps.

[darktable-user] Scrolling with mouse-wheel

2016-05-20 Thread Frank J.
Hallo,
most the time in lighttable-mode I can scroll thru the pics whith the
mouse-wheel.

Sometimes this function is lost and the mouse-wheel controls the slider
in the bottom which changes the number of pics per row.

How can I set this back to scrolling?

It's very slowly to scroll with arrow-keys.

There are different "times" in Exif.
You have to change the field "DateTimeOriginal".

I'm scanning my old slides and import them to darktable.
The scanning-software sets the date of scanning.
Before I import the files I set the date with commands like:

exiv2 -M"set Exif.Image.DateTimeOriginal '1991-06-18 00:00:00'"

Hallo,
six month ago I had a problem with the 12-40.
http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.graphics.darktable.user/8013/

Here is my workarround (written on this list):
http://article.gmane.org/gmane.comp.graphics.darktable.user/8024/

I dropped an issue at lensfun and it was fixed:
 https://sourceforge.net/p/lensfun/bugs/31/
On an actual system, this error should not happen.
