Bug#399113: xen kernel infinite loop processing core dump

2007-01-05 Thread Knock, Bob
I am not able to reproduce this bug on my Core2 Duo (2GB RAM)
PC running linux-image-2.6.18-3-xen-amd64 with amd64 etch.
 - linux-image-2.6.18-3-i386 and linux-image-2.6.18-3-k7 (2.6.18-7)

Did you try the -xen-686 flavor?

I have not seen anyone actually explicitly confirm that the debian kernel team
reproduced it, but http://lists.debian.org/debian-kernel/2006/12/msg00347.html
and http://lists.debian.org/debian-kernel/2006/12/msg00488.html indicate they
did, and are able to avoid the problem by enabling PAE.

Bob

I do not have this problem any more. I have reinstall aptitude and now it
works fine. It was only a upgrade problem. Reinstall is without any

Curious. That looks like the same aptitude that I uploaded to the

 Hi Kevin,

Thank you so much for the patch. I have reviewed it after returning
from vacation and it seems fine, at least at first glance. I will
apply the patch when I get around to working on GCC again. I'll do
that after Etch is released; now everything is frozen anyway.

the archive is not yet frozen; you can get in single patches, just
upload to unstable, and then ask the release team.

Bug#405713: Segfault when having 'options inet6' in /etc/resolv.conf (related to bug #405694)

2007-01-05 Thread Jeroen Massar
Package: spamassassin
Version: 3.1.7-1

This bug is related to bug #405694.

When having 'options inet6' in /etc/resolv.conf SA segfaults.
Unfortunately I was unable to get a crash dump out of it or
localize where the problem occurs. It might quite well be a
bug in the perl libraries that are being used.

Greets,
 Jeroen

Bug#405716: adept-installer: quiet about debconf prompt during package configuration

2007-01-05 Thread Filipus Klutiero
Package: adept-installer
Version: 2.1.2
Severity: normal

When a package prompts by debconf, adept-installer stays quiet and
there's no way to realize that a question must be answered. After some
time of stalling, the user should figure out that he should click on
Show Details, and it will then be possible to answer the question.

Basically this wastes admin's time. This may not happen if a debconf
frontend other than dialog is chosen, but KDE dialog didn't seem to
work.

It was ommited from debian/install

What do you think of that ?

thanks
the original bug is the utimes bug in glibc, which is worked around in
python2.3, but there should be some place to check for:

 - lintian / linda
 - dupload / dput
 - ftp.debian.org
If such a check would be needed, it would be the domain of lintian. I
think it makes sense that lintian would check at least the things that
the archive software does, but it's up to the lintian maintainers to
decide whether to implement this. Reassigning there.

That has changed now, :iabb's have stopped working either. I don't get

buggy. :-(

I've found an old (2004) usenet posting from upstream maintainer Mikolaj

Bug#404987: installation-reports: minor error when configuring LVM

2007-01-05 Thread Luca Capello
Hi Frans!

The lvmcfg module should not be used during installs that use
partman. All needed functionality to set up LVM is already contained

I guessed this and it was also the reason my report was severity
normal.

See the installation guide for Etch for instructions how to set up
 LVM from partman.

Well, the installation manual is not clear when explaining the
different modules [1] or how to setup LVM [2]. In the former case,
there's no mention that partman will add LVM configuration in most of
the situations. In the latter case, specifically subchapter 6.3.2.2,
the 4th paragraph states

Then start the lvmcfg module (either directly from partman or from
the debian-installer's main menu) and [...]

Thus, FWIU I can use both ways to configure the LVM, which is not
true (but I'm not an English-native speaker and maybe I missed
something in my quite fast reading of the installation manual).

BTW, I know that this happens only when booting in 'expert' mode, in
fact booting the 'install' mode works smoothly.

Thx, bye,
Gismo / Luca

Bug#405656: Icedax bugreport: cd title lookup doesn't work

2007-01-05 Thread Eduard Bloch
#include hallo.h
* [EMAIL PROTECTED] [Fri, Jan 05 2007, 12:12:45PM]:
 Package: icedax
 Version: 1.1.0-1

 Hello!

When I try to read a cd, icedax isn't able to lookup the cd title and
 tracks from a freedb server.

 Command:

   icedax -D /dev/dvd -L 0 cddbp-server=freedb2.freedb.org

 Part of the result:

   CDINDEX discid: NE5w4c6M3yfOfH2kAo3vDgrKEN0-
   CDDB discid: 0xef109f0f
   CD-Text: not detected
   CD-Extra: not detected
samplefile size will be 45292508 bytes.

I captured the conversation between icedax and the freedb server, which
reveals a violation of the cddb protocol. There must not be a newline
beteween the hello statement and the user:

201 mirror1.freedb.org CDDBP server v1.5.2PL0 ready at Fri Jan 05
08:31:19 2007
cddb hello
bxt lysira icedax .11.1.0

Captured how? Icedax sends that in two separate chunks but not adding a
newline between them.

500 Command syntax error.
quit
230 mirror1.freedb.org Closing connection. Goodbye.

 Suggestion:

   Remove the newline after hello.

AFAICS icedax does not send a newline. The only source of a newline
therein can be your own username. Does it contain one?

Eduard.

Bug#405725: seahorse: Fix crash in agent when listing transientkey in cache

2007-01-05 Thread Sven Arvidsson
Package: seahorse
Version: 0.9.7-1
Severity: important
Tags: patch

seahorse-daemon crashes when I click on the icon in the notification
area after having my SSH and GPG keys loaded by Seahorse. This bug has
been fixed upstream in version 0.9.9

I'm attaching a patch, taken from the upstream version, to fix
this. The only downside is that my GPG key is now listed as Unknown
Key: ANSIENTTRANSIENT, but I think this is preferable to a crash.

I would be very grateful if someone could review the patch and perhaps
push it into Etch if possible.

Bug#400501: ajaxterm release 0.10-1 and screen sizing

2007-01-05 Thread Julien Valroff
package ajaxterm
forwarded 400501 [EMAIL PROTECTED]
thanks

Le vendredi 05 janvier 2007 à 13:17 +, Paul Cager a écrit :
 Julien,
Hi Paul,

I'm interested in version 0.10 of ajaxterm, as it allows me to specify the
screen size (Cols-x-Rows). I had a look at your package [1] and wondered
if I could make a couple of suggestions to support this changeable screen
 size?

Thanks for the suggestion. There are no changes I am aware of that could
help changing the size of the terminal (except the fact that the max
width is now set to 256 from release 0.8). It is planned upstream to
allow changing the size dynamically from the GUI, but for the moment,
nothing is done.

The width and height must now be changed in both ajaxterm.py (main
script) and in ajaxterm.html (in the call of ajaxterm.Terminal
function).
Implementing your proposal in the Debian package would imply too many
changes in the upstream sources, I will however report your wish
upstream so as to allow this in the next release.

Cheers,
Julien

Bug#405726: ltsp-server: does not install all video and input packages

2007-01-05 Thread Vagrant Cascadian
Package: ltsp-server
Version: 0.99debian9
Severity: important
Tags: patch

due to recent changes in xserver-xorg dependencies (see #405639),
ltsp-build-client creates a new LTSP chroot without all the appropriate
xserver-xorg-video* and xserver-xorg-input* packages installed.

this breaks the overwhelming majority of ltsp installs, as users will
expect keyboard, mice and a variety of video cards to work with LTSP.
(would this justify a grave severity?)

a trivial patch is attached which should work around the problem, by
adding xserver-xorg-video-all and xserver-xorg-input-all to the list of
packages to install.

live well,

I'm concerned about the portability of pwd -P. /bin/pwd does not support
this, although all the major shells, including busybox sh, have builtins
that do support it.

Here's a patch that does the same thing, while avoiding the xargs, pwd -P,
and awk (and also the cd). I haven't tested it in d-i yet, but /sys should
be there, so it probably works.

A 2-D plotter with infinite zooming, value picking, pipe input, and
unlimited plots displayed. Quickplot is meant for looking at your
data quickly and of secondary importance is making static pictures of
your data. It is a data viewer, not a plot editor. It reads ASCII
text and sound files. It has lots of command line options, making it
 very shell script friendly.

Comments/Problems:
I am using the daily-build netinst image burnt onto a CDRW using cdrecord. Once
the bootsplash is shown, I used installgui at boot-prompt. Booting is perfect in
all respects until the framebuffer initialisation happens. A page full of
DirectFB initialisation stuff is shown, then screen blanks and repeats the same
thing. I used suspend (CTRL+S) to hold the screen. From vc4 it was clear that
debian-installer was the one which was being repeatedly invoked. So I used vc2
shell to do 'log-output debian-installer' to get pretty much the same output as
on vc1. And here is the final /var/log/syslog

Description: portable shell tool from the GNU project
GNU shtool is a tool for developers of software programs. It is a
compilation of small but very stable and portable shell scripts into
a single shell tool. All ingredients were in successful use over many
years in various free software projects. The compiled shtool program
is intended to be used inside the source tree of other free software
packages. There it can overtake various (usually non-portable) tasks
related to the building and installation of such a package. It
especially can replace the old mkdir.sh, install.sh and related
 scripts.

I was running 1.2.4-5 and had upgrade problems when trying to move to 1.2.4-6
which is what is available for the testing branch.

I had an issue performing the upgrade -- because the imapproxy could stop
(even though it was already stopped) -- I saw there were some
bug reports on this issue regarding the init script, so I modified that to
allow dpkg to upgrade the packaging and when prompted if I
would like to overwrite my (customized) version of the init.d/imapproxy
script with the Default package-maintainer's version, I selected
 yes.

Since I still received the following error with 1.2.4-6 I saw there was -7
available in unstable. I proceeded to install 1.2.4-7 and
 still have the same issue:

Yup. Experienced here also under changed conditions.

I am testing a new version, to try and fix it at once.

Bug#322762: no blocking bugs anymore

2007-01-05 Thread Thijs Kinkhorst
Hi,

Set any bugs about /usr/doc stuff to being blockers of this bug report.
Use this as a tracking/coordination bug for the remainder of the transition.

Note that once this transition is complete we will need to do something
in base-files to remove the /usr/doc directory, if it is empty. It won't
be empty in all cases, for example a user might have non-debian or old
packages that have not transitioned still installed. This bug can be
reassigned to base-files to deal with that last step once it is no
longer blocked by any other bugs.

Well, today I have fixed the last two remaining bugs that blocked this
bug (I'll have to followup to them to see whether the fixes will get to
Etch, but that is not really on topic for this bug per se).

Hence, I think now is the time to continue with the next steps as
outlined in the first message in the bug, right?

It seems everything is working properly except the message; thus I kept on

Is there some reason why you didn't just let it try again? It should

Or put f2py into the -dev package? Debian has the distinction between
runtime and development packages; to make the package work out of the
box, you would have to depend on compilers as well, which is not
desired when you install the package just as a dependency of another
package. Maybe another option could be a renaming of python-numpy to
python-numpy-runtime and python-numpy-dev to python-numpy, so that you
get what upstream wants you to get.

If you want to move the f2py script (though not the numpy.f2py subpackage) to
another Debian package, I have no objection. However, the fortranobject.[ch]
files are package data, and IMO should stay with the numpy.f2py subpackage; I
don't see how anyone benefits by removing them.

Wrong.

does *not* fit. installing OOo does not introduce a security hole for
your whole system. Besides that you need a special-crafted WMF anyway.

2 grave makes the package in question unusable by most or all users,
or causes data loss, or introduces a security hole allowing access to the

More or less, but this is a local exploit where you only can exploit the users'
rights whjre you already are using it

I'll make it important, see #405679, too

Discussable. See #405679.

The security issue and a patch were described at
 http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=70042. From what is
written, this vulnerability can be used to execute any code on the
vulnerable system. Please check, if Debian is affected and if Sarge is
 affected too.

Grepping through the changelog and the BTS made me think, that this
issue hasn't been fixed in Debian yet.

Yes. Because we are not affected AFAIS.
And WTF are you filing a new bug when there already is #405679 for this?
And where that bug is marked as pending?

I'll probably upload a new package anyway, but you really should learn
how to use the BTS (hint: tags and severities and how to look for bugs)

Boost's maintainers have already uploaded a fixed version, and I'm not
100% confident the two bugs are actually related (though I still
strongly suspect they are). At this point, I'd probably just wait for
new binaries to hit the archive for the two relevant architectures
(probably sometime over the weekend) and then request binNMUs.

We're not doing this to work around #403805. That's a udev bug, which
should not ship in etch, since the fix for RC bug #403804 will also fix
it.

I really dislike spamming the interfaces file with this huge and ugly
comment. The release notes are a better place to document this kind of
thing.

I also agree with Steve that nobody is going to understand the
circumstances when it's safe to remove the allow-hotplug. Moreover,
there's no _reason_ to remove the allow-hotplug, since if your interface
is in fact not hotpluggable, it's a total no-op to leave it in.

Bug#404927: udev/aacraid interaction - should aacraid set 'removable'?

2007-01-05 Thread Salyzyn, Mark
I do not have any close at hand (cleaned out the hardware closet to
hazardous waste) :-(

But, as far as I am concerned :-), if it says 'DPT' or 'Adaptec' as the
manufacturer's name portion of the inquiry field, or has 'RAID' or
'Array' somewhere in the product name inquiry field, you have covered
most, if not all, of the possibilities I can come up with!

Hope that helps.

Bug#405747: pdnsd fails with resolvconf at boot time

2007-01-05 Thread Hadmut Danisch
Package: pdnsd
Version: 1.2.4par-0.1

Hi,

I am using pdnsd with resolvconf on an ubuntu notebook.

The pdnsd configuration fails if the ethernet cable is plugged in at boot
time, because dhcp runs and calls the resolvconf at a time when pdnsd is not
yet running. pdnsd then does not get the dns server passed by dhcp.

Bug#370295: sun-java must not provide java2-runtime

2007-01-05 Thread Walter Landry
I was not CC'd, so I did not notice this action on this bug until now.

 severity 370295 important
 thanks

You are the release manager, and you can modify the normal processing
of bugs. So I won't argue about the severity of this bug.

The rationale given for reopening this bug was:

The SWT example suggests that it is OK to reimplement large parts of the
Java API and configure Sun's Java to run with it, but the plain language
   of the license prohibits it.

Even though the license text appears to prohibit this, and even though the
license text asserts that the FAQ is non-binding, we have:

You are confusing me. The FAQ _is_ binding.

 - a statement from upstream (in the FAQ) that the DLJ does not prohibit
distributing sun-java5 together with eclipse, which implies it does not
prohibit distributing it together with SWT

That is why this is all so confusing. Sun contradicts itself. The
reasonable thing to do is to find out what Sun wants before charging
ahead with packaging.

 - an upstream liaison who understands Debian packaging and how these
packages are put together and who, after reviewing this bug report, closed
it with the statement that these issues have been addressed.

I don't know what upstream thinks. I know what Tom Marble says, but
Tom Marble has never claimed that he speaks authoriatively for Sun
when deciding whether the packaging is ok. I have asked him several
times, and he never replied to that question.

It is also debatable whether Debian has combined, configured, or
distributed the Software to run in conjunction with any additional
software that implements the same or similar functionality or APIs
as the Software. We are distributing the software in such a way
that a user can opt to combine them

The provides: java2-runtime line configures sun's java to run with
any program that needs it. I do not understand how you can argue
otherwise.

, but even though sun-java5 is
listed as providing java2-runtime, on a default Debian system
non-free is not even listed in the apt configuration.

It does not matter whether sun-java is available on a default Debian
system. It only matters whether Debian is the one distributing the
incompatible packages.

I'm not going to claim that there are no bugs in the way this
package is currently licensed; lack of clarity is always a bug. But
I don't believe there is anything here that warrants holding the
package out of the release -- and upstream apparently agrees.

In any case, the code will become GPL, so this problem will go away on
its own. It is unfortunate that the package was rammed through
without competent review of the license.

Cheers,
Walter Landry

Sarge is but the fix is already at the security team (just that NGS

Debian (I think you wanted to say etch/sid/experimental) isn't affected since

The next upload will have the backport and the CVE mentioned, which I didn't

Bug#327497: Duplicate of #338241?

2007-01-05 Thread Mario Frasca
Hi Michel,

short story:
OK, bug disappeared for me too.

longer story:
I have completely reinstalled my system, about two months ago, bought
a new larger HD, further the same hardware.

one of the tests I run after installation was on fbdev and it still had
this problem.

I did not yet set up automatic update/upgrade and yesterday, after
holidays and some skipped upgrades, I had some serious problems getting
the system up again... in particular I could not use X any more - at all!

so immediately after one reboot I opened the xorg.conf file and went
back from ati to fbdev and I'm up again, X usable, no swapped colours,
no locked system! - me happy user.

will need to file a bug regarding the ati driver or see if it has
already reported...

ciao,
thanks,
Mario

I have an Epson 1640SU, I added myself to the scanner group.
I use sane from testing.
I think it should be easier for users to scan as non-root user.
The permissions of the files in /dev should somehow be handled
automatically.
Maybe a question when installing libsane, if you want to add all users
to the scanner group and modify the permissions in /dev or something.

Excellent.

I note that we still arn't 100% sure we've caught every last upgrade

upgrades of everything.

Also, I see that there are still some lintian warnings about it at

but I guess these are obsolete, since it was last updated in August. I
spot-checked a couple of packages and they seem fixed.

Yes, I think it's time to reassign it to base-files, to get the

Thanks for the reply. You are absolutely right, of course, ajaxterm
*doesn't* have a --size parameter.

I'm rather confused now - I'm sure I've seen ajaxterm in the past *with*

 Cheers,
 Julien

No, the next step is to close the bug and celebrate it.

If the system has only official Debian packages installed, and you upgrade
all of them in a way that none of them put files under /usr/doc anymore,
then dpkg should automatically remove /usr/doc when upgrading the last
/usr/doc-using package, and there is really no need to do anything else.

base-files is not, and should not be, a fix-everything package. Once
we have fixed all our packages, we are already compliant, and that's
all what we should reasonably do.

The local admin is still free to put files in /usr/doc if he wishes,
but it's not our job to fiddle with those files, move them around,
or anything similar. Our job was fixing our packages, and that's now done.

Thanks.

Bug#403012: Using UUID= for a root partition in /etc/fstab fails to boot

2007-01-05 Thread Martin Michlmayr
* Brian Brunswick [EMAIL PROTECTED] [2006-12-14 04:58]:
I wanted to make booting more reliable for multiple devices plugged
in, and use UUIDs to find the root device, as I do on my server
system. But it appears not to boot after regenerating the initrd
with dpkg-reconfigure kernel with the root partition as a UUID
identified device. I had to re-flash the install image to recover
things by chrooting and undoing the change.

I just tried it myself and it worked.

First I checked for the UUID of my root partition (sda1):

foobar:~# ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid/
total 0
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Jan 5 16:58 6a9e3c00-4dd3-4930-98cc-450b0efe517d -
../../sda5
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Jan 5 16:58 7750fe81-888e-4bf4-9c87-94d54bcb3291 -
../../sda1
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Jan 5 16:58 cf704e76-d2fb-4a49-a8f6-843d1d116019 -
../../sda6
foobar:~# ls -l /dev/disk/by-uuid/7750fe81-888e-4bf4-9c87-94d54bcb3291
lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 10 Jan 5 16:58
/dev/disk/by-uuid/7750fe81-888e-4bf4-9c87-94d54bcb3291 - ../../sda1
foobar:~#

Then I put /dev/disk/by-uuid/7750fe81-888e-4bf4-9c87-94d54bcb3291 into
/etc/fstab.

/dev/disk/by-uuid/7750fe81-888e-4bf4-9c87-94d54bcb3291 / ext3
defaults,errors=remount-ro 0

Regenerated the initramfs and flashed it.

Note sure why it didn't work for you... Maybe you put in a commnt in
/etc/fstab and hit #405566. If you send me your initramfs file by
private mail I can see if I can see why it failed.

Is there an easy recipe for getting something telnet or ssh-able to
run from the initrd, that would make it possible to debug this sort
 of thing?

Not really, I'm afraid. You'd need to attach a serial console to your
slug.

4 years ago, you reported a bug to the Debian BTS regarding a conflict

the system to hang. Are you still able to reproduce this problem? If
not, I will close this bug in the next weeks.

Then it's dpkg fault, in which case you should reassign it to dpkg.

Bug#405758: adept-installer: unparsed SGML character entity in details tooltips

2007-01-05 Thread Filipus Klutiero
Package: adept-installer
Version: 2.1.2
Severity: minor

In the Package Relationships tab, letting the mouse on a relationship
brings a tooltip when the relationship is too long for the Package
column (which is when the package ends in ...). When a relationship
contains a greater sign, the tooltip contains an unparsed SGML character
entity gt; rather than . For example, the relationship from
libkscan1 to libc6 shows as required: libc6 gt;= 2.3.6-6.
