Bug#789737: etoys: ok to relicense packaging from current GPL to GPL-3+?

 Hi José,

I am currently preparing to move etoys pacakge to the Sugar team, as we
 discussed recently in private email.

There's one issue, however: I want to license my packaging contributions
as GPL-3+, but you licensed existing packaging as GPL which - by strict
interpretation - means GPL version 1 and no newer version.

I guess you really meant either GPL-2 or GPL-2+.

Are you ok with relicensing your work as GPL-3+ (or GPL-2+ which I
 will then upgrade to GPL-3+)?

No objections, of course.
Thanks for your work.
José L.

Bug#714836: ITP: qucs -- an integrated circuit simulator with a graphical user interface

2013-07-03 Thread L. Redrejo
Package: wnpp
Severity: wishlist
Owner: José L. Redrejo Rodríguez jredr...@debian.org

* Package name: qucs
  Version : 0.0.17
Upstream Author : Frans Schreuder fransschreu...@gmail.com
* URL : http://qucs.sourceforge.net/
* License : GPL
Description : Quite Universal Circuit Simulator

Qucs is an integrated circuit simulator which means you are able to
setup a circuit with a graphical user interface (GUI) and simulate the
large-signal, small-signal and noise behaviour of the circuit.
After that simulation has finished you can view the simulation results
on a presentation page or window.

Qucs was in Debian until Squeeze, but it had to be removed because it
didn't compile with qt4 libs. Recently, upstream has released a qt4
based version, so I'm intending to include it in Debian again.

Bug#672778: RM: gambas2 -- RoM; obsolete

2012-05-13 Thread L. Redrejo
Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: normal

Please, remove the source package gambas2 from unstable. This source
package builds 20 binary package that should be removed too.

Gambas2 can not be compiled with current qt4 and kde libraries in
wheezy/unstable. The old gambas2 compilation in the archive is totally
useless in the current sid/wheezy archive.

Also, upstream has recently released Gambas3 (which is waiting in the
Debian New queue right now) and it's maintaining only gambas2 security
patches that can not be applied in wheezy/sid either.

All the packages in the archive depending on gambas2 have already been
removed.

Bug#671387: Please add gambas3 interpreter to lintian

2012-05-03 Thread L. Redrejo
Package: lintian
Severity: wishlist

Gambas is a complete visual development environment for BASIC in linux.

The new version of Gambas, called Gambas3 and considered stable by
upstream, has gbr3 as its interpreter and will be uploaded to Debian (in
the gambas3-runtime package) in the short future.
So, please, add gbr3 as interpreter to lintian.

Also, the old version of Gambas had gbx2 and gbr2 as its interpreter and
it's already in Debian in the gambas2-runtime package, which we are
going to ask for removal before the Wheezy release, as soon as gambas is
accepted by the ftp masters. I will fill a new bug against lintian to
ask for the removal of gbr2 and gbx2 as interpreters as soon as
gambas2-runtime is removed from the archive.

Thanks

Hello
Unless you tell me not to do so, I plan to upload this to the archive
myself and maintain these packages.
I've already worked in web2py debianization and plan to co-maintain it
under the Python Modules Packaging Team in Debian.

Please tell me if you object to me stealing your ITP, or if you're want
to contribute with some code I can upload today my current work to the
python-modules subversion.
I plan to upload the package in one or two weeks at most.

Bug#602863: from bind9 to powerdns and back to bind9

2011-02-13 Thread L. Redrejo
El dom, 13-02-2011 a las 12:45 +0100, Holger Levsen escribió:
 Hi,

during the Debian Edu meeting here in Zweibrücken we discussed #602863 and
 how
to solve it. I've asked about 15 people what they'd think about us previously
using bind9 (until and including etch), then moving to powerdns (in lenny)
and then switching back to bind9 in squeeze. Everybody except two people were
_enthusiastic_ about the idea, one person wanted to stay neutral and one
neither liked bind9 nor powerdns (and suggested dnsmasq which appearantly
 also has ldap support).

So we decided to switch back to bind9 to solve #602863.

And we still seek feedback and comments on this!

Obviously, you're free to do it. From my point of view, these are not
good news.
In the future, in our schools we're not going to switch back to use
bind9 and will keep the current setup with pdns.
Having all the infraestructure and information stored in ldap is very
safe when you have several thousands of ltsp servers and don't want to
manually modify configuration files whenever a new server is placed or
moved. More things are in ldap, less things we have to touch.

#602863 is not important for us. Our servers still remain in lenny and
our plans to move to squeeze (or wheeze) include the development of a
lwat replacement. We need to develop it to fit our needs as we have to
create accounts massively every beginning of the course using as source
an external application where our ministry manages all the educational
data for every citizen. So, neither gosa, cipux or lwat can fulfill our
needs, and a custom development is the only solution I can see.

So, as we all use Debian and can touch everything, don't take this as a
negative vote. We can do all the changes we need to adjust the
installation to our setup.
Currently we change some things, and in the future more changes will be
needed, including removal of the debian-edu-config package.
Fortunately, our release cycle for the school servers setup is more than
two years, so we have time to adapt our setups.

Regards.

This was done in svn for the debian-edu and debian-edu-config packages in
 r72928-72930:

   * Switch from pdns to bind and ldap2zone. This enables management of
hosts with GOsa and has been done to enable further testing. Obviously
it could be reverted and needs to be agreed on. Also needs
documentation if kept for the release. Add debian/TODO.Squeeze.

debian/TODO.Squeeze is kept in debian-edu-config and reads:

 * cf.pdns for pdns has been kept for easier reverting back to pdns.
Or is this useful for users of pdns too (luis)?
There were also thoughts about an install option (like gnome instead of kde)
though this aint that easy probably, as it also involves the ldap ui...
 * Some extra attributes (objectClass: domainRelatedObject i.e.
associateddomain) in gosa-server.ldif have also been kept, they
probably conflict with making additions/changes in GOsa and need to
be removed if we want to keep bind.

Currently it seems we have broken the main server installation with this, we
are working on fixing this, but due to traveling and the work week starting
tomorrow this might take a few days. Stay tuned :-)

 cheers,
   Holger

Note that DNS info will still be in LDAP, also with bind9. But the
LDAP schema used is differet with bind9 than with powerdns. The LDAP
info is transfered to bind9 config files using the ldap2zone package.

Sorry I haven't had time enouth to even take a look to these changes.
Will ldap2zone remove previous zones in a bind configuration. I.E. not
installing a new server, but moving it from a classroom to another or
from a school to another, will it remove previous configs and create new
ones?

Anyway, at the end of it, I don't see any benefit from going back to
bind9 and having to change the configurations again, and having to train
the technical stuff again...
If the change is due only to an admin tool, and not because the dns
solution is better, I can't see a reason to change, as I can not use
that admin tool.

 Happy hacking,

Bug#558686: This bug now happens always

2010-03-30 Thread L. Redrejo
Since about ten days, I can reproduce always this bug using daily builds
of squeeze images.
Using virtualbox, the bug raises everytime the partitioning scheme is
changed. Using only ext3, without lvm or raid.
After raising the bug, next time I use the installer, if I choose the
same partition scheme (all the directories in a partition, as an
example), the bug doesn't happen, but changing to any other scheme it
raises once again.

I've also been using simple-cdd to do squeeze images, and the bug begun
to appear since last tuesday. So there must be some package migrated to
testing about those days that make it.

Hope this info helps.

I think the migrated to testing comment is incorrect.

Daily built images use udebs from *unstable*, so it is quite likely to be
related to the upload of the new parted to unstable, which happened about
 the time you indicate.

I know, but I meant that migrated to testing affected to the
simple-cdd builds that I do using a testing repository.
So, since then, the error raises in daily built images and in the isos I
generate with simple-cdd.

Anyway, looking at the parted changelog, I don't see anything related to
this bug, so maybe the guilty is somewhere else. In fact, the bug
apperared in the simple cdd generated images three or four days after
parted migrated (I'm using ftp.us.debian.org repository to create the
images, not my own mirror).

Hello Nigel, sorry for the delay, but I've prefered to do more checks

I'm attaching you a list of a very simple site.pp used, and the log
outputs when using (and not using) the --debug option in the command

For more fun, the bug doesn't appear everytime you executed puppetd, it
only happens randomly, and it happens much more often if the debug

Anyway, I think you can reproduce it easily using a fresh squeeze

I'm afraid the these symptoms are mostly as those described at

Severity: important

whenever a class file including exec is executed at the client, the

I guess it might be a problem with ruby and not with puppet, but I'm not
sure. This problem didn't exist with ruby version 1.8.7.174-2 and puppet
version 0.24.8-2

After a Squeeze update, with ruby version 1.8.7.249-1 and puppet version
0.25.4-2 all the rules including exec are failing at the puppet client.
Puppetmaster doesn't seem to fail.

of course, incompatible with the DFSG.

No one of these methods include the translation sources in the sources
of the package, so no one is valid for Debian.

Please, do not file useless RC bugs -- I agree that not having the .po files
directly available is a bit unfortunate, but the source is available.

The source is not available in the Debian sources, so it's still a
serious violation of the DFSG. You must include all the sources, not
sources mixed with binaries and trust that you can find the rest of the
sources in the net.

So this is still a RC bug. I know, by my own experience, that it's
unfortunate if upstream doesn't provide you the sources directly, but as
a maintainer, you don't have excuses to avoid adding a patch including
them in the Debian sources.

Regards.

I'm not actually hit by the problem, as I use the normal dhcp3 server only.

Can you check if using ldap-method static instead of dynamic, the
problem persists?
As you know, I'm using this in many schools since last year and have
never had this problem. I'm using the same configuration debian edu has,
except that I use static to connect to ldap. On the other hand, I don't
know why dynamic is being used in Debian edu, as it creates much more
traffic with the ldap server, and adding new machines to ldap is not
something I do everyday to need a dynamic connection to the ldap
server

JFractionLab shows the user every step of the calculation and therefore helps
him to understand them.
It gives the user an answer after each input, making impossible to have a false

Bug#538241: simple-cdd can not build multiple media installers

2009-07-24 Thread L. Redrejo
Package: simple-cdd
Version: 0.3.11
Severity: wishlist

When trying to build a Debian installer that has to fit in a cd media,
simple-cdd is limited to use no more than 700 mb of packages, as it's
not able to build a multiple media installer.

It would be really useful to be able to build it (to make a base
installation + a cd with games o a cd with educative packages, etc.)

Debian installer can do it, so simple-cdd should be able to do it too ;)

Have you continued working on packaging gwt or just gave up?

Version 1.7.0 has just been released, and maybe it's time to set up an
alioth project in order to try to package this nice monster.

It's a very powerful tool, theorically free, and it's a real pity to
have it out of Debian.

gconf2 needs to be installed for update-gconf-defaults from postinst/postrm to
 get triggered.

Not, debhelper takes care of this: if it is not installed it doesn't do
that in the postinst:

# Automatically added by dh_gconf
if [ $1 = configure ] which update-gconf-defaults /dev/null
21; then
update-gconf-defaults
fi

So, if gconf2 is not installed, the bug should not raise.

The problem must be in some other place.

i can reproduce this behavior in a clean sid chroot by first installing
 gconf2,
installing debian-edu-artwork 0.0.28, and then upgrading to 0.0.30-2.

the same process in a clean lenny chroot actually works fine, so i'm thinking
this is a bug in recent versions of gconf2.

Bug#487635: The perfomance degrading since lenny also affects to ltsp clients

2009-05-11 Thread L. Redrejo
I've tested it using both lenny and squeeze versions of libx11-6. Only
downgrading to libx11-6 from etch allows some applications (as java
apps) run in an usable way.

Maybe this info can help:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libxcb/+bug/277069
and
http://bugs.freedesktop.org/show_bug.cgi?id=17868
say that the problems appeared since libx11-6 was linked with xcb.

This problem is very important for Debian Edu users. Up to now, the only
workaround is downgrading to the etch library.

Bug#509877: ldm: please add support for non-readers login

2008-12-27 Thread L. Redrejo
Package: ldm
Version: 2:2.0.6-4
Severity: wishlist

I'd like to use ltsp in primary schools for children that can not read
and write yet.
In the past I've used gdm with its Face browser feature, using also
pam to allow some faces login without password.
Migrating to ltsp makes me need some similar feature with ldm, otherwise
small children will not be able to use the computers as youngest kids
can not read or they're still learning to read or write.

You can see an example of my previous gdm login at
http://www.educarex.es/linexcolegios/ .

I know kdm can also manage faces, so it's not a weird option. It would
be great adding such feature to ldm, or at least, some icon to be able
to login without typing a login user (for the password it can be avoided
using pam).

Cheers
José L.

  Hola José,

Thank you for your bug report and for using mondo.

Package cdrecord is obsolete and a transition package to package wodim.

mondo 1:2.2.7-1 does depend on package wodim. I am therefore closing
  this bug.

  * Right, I knew that, but unless I install cdrecord, mondoarchive
does not start. It seems that upstream authors keep it looking
for the cdrecord file. wodim was installed in my system and
mondoarchive didn't work until I installed cdrecord.

  Thanks a lot best regards,
  Andree

PS: I suggest you consider not using terms like 'stupid behaviour'
because it can easily offend. (I realise you are not a native English
speaker, so please take this as a friendly hint.)

Of course, thanks very much for your advice. I wasn't aware of that word
being so offensive. I'll try to remember it for future english
conversations.

Regards

Bug#497583: missing source code / incomplete debian/copyright

2008-09-03 Thread L. Redrejo

 Hi,

 the file platforms/unix/src/vm/interp.c starts with:

/* Automatically generated from Squeak on an Array(9 May 2008 11:24:03 am)
 by VMMaker 3.8b6 [...]

However, I cannot identify the source file for that file.

This is the source file. Squeak people uses a Squeak image to store
the virtual machine sources, as any other people can use svn o cvs. That
message only means that the text file has been generated that way, but
that file is the only and real source file to be compiled.

  Also,
debian/copyright doesn't contain any hint how this file is generated.

At debian/copyright you can read:

All other source files below platforms/unix in this distribution that do
not
contain individual copyright and license notices are:

Copyright (C) 1996-2006 by Ian Piumarta and other authors/contributors
 listed in individual source files.

  All rights reserved.

For all of the above files:

and then a BSD like license is written.

So I think this packages fails the DFSG, and cannot be part of main in
it's current version (and fails also the release policy, which makes the
 bug serious).

I hope my informations have cleared it for you. If not, please tell me,
and I will try to explain it better. Squeak is a very different piece of
software from what people is used to see and I do know that its way of
working is not easy to explain and understand.

Regards.

that file is the only and real source file to be compiled.

So, I can load that text file from within squeak, and do any changes
there, and safe again? (i.e. that text file is the file actually used
 for modifications?)

Yes, these are the needed steps:
- Open a Squeak standard image (as an example you can use the etoys
package in non-free, that image is olpc'ed (thought to teach and learn)
so it's not very confortable to use it to program but you might use it.
- Install inside this image, using the Squeak Package loader the package
VMmaker.
- Start VMMaker and config it telling the path to the sources you want
to modify, for example the sources from the Debian package
- Modify the sources inside Squeak to do any change
- Use VMMaker to regenerate the sources.

If you don't use vmmaker you can do it manually, but it's harder due to
the size of the sources, and the need of manually modifying some of the
code depending on the plugins you're going to compile.

Smalltalkers use the Squeak Image to modify the code, usually the
plugins [1]. Ian Piumarta, the main author of the unix virtual image
port, does it manually using a standard text editor for part of the
code, excepting the plugins. He uses to program them inside the image,
as it's easier to debug them in real time.

A latest note: when modifying the code inside the image instead of using
a standard text editor, the code is modified in Slang (C with
Smalltalk syntax), that's how smalltalkers do it to use the same
Smalltalk class browser. It does not matter if you use a plain text
editor or Squeak to modify the code: at the end of the process VMmaker
makes the translation to plain C. Obviously VMmaker is free and its
sources (in Smalltalk) are available inside the same Squeak image.

Regards.
José L.

[1] In Squeak plugins are functions that're executed by the virtual
machine instead of by the image. That's usually done by perfomance
reasons as all the code inside the image is in Smalltalk, and some
actions very OS related are faster in C (i.e. accesing the filesystem,
keyboard or the sound card)

Bug#486101: freehdl.pc missing in package freehdl

2008-07-18 Thread L. Redrejo
El jue, 17-07-2008 a las 16:42 +, K. Gysin escribió:
 Hi,

The error is because the freehdl.pc file is not included in the package.

 Adding the line
 usr/lib/pkgconfig/freehdl.pc
to libfreehdl0.install (in the package source) and re-building the
 package should solve that issue.

I also had to adapt the script qucsdigi (/usr/bin/qucsdigi) and add
--tag CXX otherwise I would get a compile error:

 libtool --quiet --mode=link $CXX $NAME._main_.o $NAME.o $LIBS
 $IEEELIBS -o $NAME
 libtool --quiet --mode=link --tag CXX $CXX $NAME._main_.o $NAME.o $LIBS
 $IEEELIBS -o $NAME

Both changes are quite trivial (and I am not sure if freehdl.pc really
belongs to the libraries, or if the second fix is the correct response
here), so I am not attaching patches. I can still do so if required, of
 cours.

Thanks for your info.
I've fixed the freehdl package to include the pkgconfig info. About the
qucs issue I'd prefered to send a message to upstream as I'm not sure
the fix is totally adecuate either. I'll fix qucs depending on his
answer.

 Hi,

The package 'msttcorefonts', which your package Suggests, has changed
name. It is now called ttf-mscorefonts-installer, to be in line with
other TrueType font packages in Debian. Also, recently the
ttf-liberation package has entered Debian. This is a package containing
free variants of the Arial, Courier and Times New Roman fonts. This is
obviously a better alternative to users since it's in main and doesn't
 require a separate download.

Please do one of the following:

 1) If your package only needs Arial, Courier or Times New Roman, change
the Suggests to:
ttf-liberation | ttf-mscorefonts-installer

 2) If the suggests is specifically about non-{Arial,Courier,Times)
fonts, change it to:
ttf-mscorefonts-installer

 thanks,

Thanks for your report. I'll take option 1) .

Bug#485761: Dependency on the joystick package is needed

2008-06-11 Thread L. Redrejo
Package: ltsp-client-core
Version: 5.1.9-1
Severity: important

When using serial mice in the thin clients, and set the
variable X_MOUSE_DEVICE=/dev/ttySxxx at the lts.conf file, it is
ignored if the package joystick is not installed.
The script ltsp-init-common from the ltsp-client-core package needs
inputattach that is available at the joystick package.
I've tested that installing this package, xorg.conf is generated ok and
it works fine.

You only need to upgrade the dhcp3-server-ldap package, but I've

In my tests, it works now but I prefer to be sure it works for you too

Uops, the altered file is dhcp-3.1.0-ldap-code.dpatch
not dhcp-3.1.0-ldap-docs.dpatch. So the changelog I've modified
contains a bug :-(

as also said last time, just use aufs then. aufs is the better unionfs
 anyway.

yes, I've tested aufs and worked like a charm, I'll send a patch to the
ltsp maintainer, but I'd prefer to use the debian packages until the
patch is aproved/rejected.

Bug#481210: Replace the use of the almost deprecated unionfs by aufs

2008-05-14 Thread L. Redrejo
Package: ltsp
Version: 5.1.5-1
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

When using nbd instead of nfs, ltsp uses unionfs.
Unionfs is being replaced by aufs in similar systems like live cds. It's
better maintained upstream, more reliable[1] and less buggy, so even
unionfs-modules Debian maintainer recommends its replacement[2].

I've tried it, and it works perfectly. Attached is the usual patch to
change this behaviour.

By the way, doing the patch I've checked that the files:
client/initramfs/hooks/ltsp_client
client/initramfs/init-bottom/unionfs_cow

are not used in the packaging of ltsp, and totally useless ;-)

Best regards.

will happen after adding slapd to the Should-Start section, if slapd

Bug#478875: local apps in ltsp 5

2008-05-01 Thread L. Redrejo
Package: ldm
Version: 2.0.3-1
Severity: wishlist
Tags: patch

I attach you the files I've prepared to be able to use local apps in
ltsp 5. I needed this feature for the schools of Extremadura. Maybe, you
can add this info to the examples section of ldm.

Steps to make it work (all of them inside the ltsp chroot):

- Install sshfs package (from sid, as it has #430225 fixed)
- useradd ltsp -d /var/tmp/ltsp -g fuse -u 65533 -G audio
- cp *20-local-app /usr/share/ldm/rc.d/
- cp localapp /usr/bin/
- chmod +x /usr/bin/localapp

To launch a local app (obviously, supposing you've already installed the
application in the ltsp chroot) you have these options:

a) In the ltsp server, at the logged user home, create a simple file
called local.exec with a line with the command to be executed locally
(between if the command has options). The file will be removed after
the local app is launched, so you can start several of them.

b) In the ltsp client, after the user has logged in, go to a tty, login
as root and execute:
localapp application

c) A wrapper replacing the way the desktop file at the ltsp-server, that
create the local.exec file for option a). I have not implemented this
yet.

Hope this helps
Regards.
José L.

  99 TRY File.Save(/tmp/gambas-apt.lock, Application.Id)

Adding a symlink /tmp/gambas-apt.lock - someimportant file an attacker could
overwrite any file on the system with the process id of aptline since this
 process
 runs as root.

The code before that looks like this would load gambas code from a file
 called /tmp/gambas-apt-exec
and then execute it but I am not sure cause I have no real idea about gambas.

 Kind regards

Bug#474172: upgrading gambas2 is impossible due to missing dependencies

2008-04-05 Thread L. Redrejo
Hi, this is not a gambas2 bug, but a kdelibs bug. Debian autobuilders
are not able to install kdelibs4-dev in i386, so gambas2 arch dependant
packages can not be built.
As soon as kdelibs4-dev is instalable again, this will be automatically
fixed.
The kde bug is #472510 .

Bug#472422: RM: gambas -- RoM; obsoleted by gambas2

2008-03-24 Thread L. Redrejo
Package: ftp.debian.org
Severity: normal

Please, remove the source package gambas altogether from unstable and
testing (i386 architecture). This source package builds 20 binary packages that
should be removed too.

This source package is for gambas v1.0 and is not maintained upstream
anymore since the stable release of gambas 2.0 on January, 2nd.

gambas2 packages are in the Debian archive since a long time ago, and there
is no package depending on any of the binaries built from gambas source.

Regards.

I guess there are more, so unless you want to fix all the bashisms in

 instead of /bin/sh.

Thanks for your report. You're right, there are a good bunch of bashims,

I think that there are more problems with that script, though. I just
tried it and had some trouble with it like this:
ls: cannot access /home/pkern/squeak/*.image: No such file or directory

Or even more fun, with an image actually present in this directory:
 ~ squeak
 found gettext in path
 /home/pkern
Could not open the Squeak image file
 `/home/pkern/squeak//home/pkern/squeak/sq3.9.1-7075web08.03.1.image.image'.

I also tried placing an image into /usr/share/squeak, which did not work
out. Please a) document how one should install images to satisfy the
 script's criteria

Right, I'm writing a right man page for the script to fix this issue.

and b) please fix the script to be able to use the
global directory, too, if that is a result of a).

b) I'll recheck the script, as it works for me (and for some thousand of
schools in Extremadura since some years ago), so it might be some
locales problem with the script. I'll try to find out where the problem
is a.s.a.p.

Directly calling squeakvm with the image file works, though. (More or
less, I'm not yet into Smalltalk and it complains a bit about missing
sources, for the squeak-web package that is.)

Yes, the image should complain (but work anyway) if a squeak sources
file does not exist. I'll add to the man page instructions to download
it. Hopefully, in a non-long term the non-relicensed code in the
squeak image will have been rewritten and we'll have images and source
files in Debian, avoiding this manual work.

This addon allows installing Debian packages from iceweasel, firefox,

For this to work, links need to have an url beginning with apt://
This package does not install the packages or download them from the
web sites, it just launches apt, passing the package name to install as
a parameter to apt.

Maybe with the operation I have more experience but I do not have a good
knowledge of how the image is uncompressed and mounted from the initrd
when the ltsp terminal starts. The fix could be something as stupid as
  setting some parameter for squashfs.ko.

ok, here's the code run from the initramfs:

 # mount the readonly root
 nbd-client ${NBD_ROOT_SERVER} ${NBD_ROOT_PORT} /dev/nbd0 mount -o ro
 -t squashfs /dev/nbd0 /rofs

 # merge ro and rw filesystems
 mount -t unionfs -o dirs=/cow=rw:/rofs=ro unionfs ${rootmnt}

this is in the client's /usr/share/initramfs-tools/scripts/ltsp_nbd
 script...

i'm wondering if running it through NBD somehow is breaking it? can you
try on the server itself to mount the squashfs via NBD?

  nbd-client 127.0.0.1 2000 /dev/nbd0

This works at the ltsp client replacing 127.0.0.1 by the ltsp-server ip.

 mount -o ro -t squashfs /dev/nbd0 /mnt

Nope, this didn't work, I always get a mount failed: Invalid argument error

you're saying the mount works fine mounting the image directly with
 something like:

  mount -o ro,loop -t squashfs /opt/ltsp/images/i386.img /mnt

This work at the ltsp-server (after installing squashfs modules) but ,
obviously not at the client.

the mount being used in the initramfs may be from busybox or
klibc-utils, i'm not sure which. i wonder if that might behave
 differently, too.

what kernel versions have you tried with?

Tried with 2.6.22 from lenny. I've tried also with 2.6.24 but it's not
been possible because of #469338.

 i'm guessing this hasn't changed with ltsp-server 5.0.40~bzr20080214-1 ?

Right, it's the same

With the new squashfs-tools that migrated to lenny on 2008-02-11,

 i believe you're referring to squashfs-tools version 1:3.3-3 ?

Right

which version(s) do you know do work?

All versions up to 1:3.2r2-9. I've tried with all the versions uploaded
later beginning with 3.2r2-9exp1 and none of them work.

the script ltsp-update-image does not work anymore.

well, i kept the default to NFS for a reason. :)

Now you have a good reason ;-)

It seems the default behaviour of mksquashfs has changed in Debian and
the img file is created but can not be uncompressed from the pxe-initrd
  image.

 might this be related to:

#456489: squashfs-tools: data corruption caused by lzma patches
#455589: squashfs-tools: mksquashfs hangs with zlib and lzma

455589 claims to be fixed in 1:3.3-3, which seems to be when you
  started encountering the problem.

Not, because in my tests I even compiled 3.3-1 to 3.3-3 removing the
lzma patch and it failed the same. Removing the lzma patch from
3.2r2-9exp1 made it work, but not with 3.3. I've also compiled the clean
upstream 3.3 version without Debian patches and it also fails. There is
something that changed from 3.2 to 3.3 that broke it.

I've tried to use the -nolzma option in the mksquashfs execution at
ltsp-update-image but it does not work either.

seems likely a bug in mksquashfs... if not one of the already reported
bugs, then some new bug. i almost thing this bug should be reassigned to
squashfs-tools (or a new bug filed and mark it as blocking this bug).

It's pretty reasonable, but it might also be some config that should be
changed in ltsp-update-image to make it work. Obviously mksquashfs and
unsquashfs work perfectly on the ltsp-server, so I don't know how to
report this bug in the squashfs-tool package as it seems only a problem
when using squashfs-tools with ltsp.

I can make more tests if some ideas, options or workarounds are
  possible.

you probably have much more experience with this mode of operation than
 i do...

Maybe with the operation I have more experience but I do not have a good
knowledge of how the image is uncompressed and mounted from the initrd
when the ltsp terminal starts. The fix could be something as stupid as

Bug#466467: ltsp-server: ltsp-update-image does not work

2008-02-18 Thread L. Redrejo
Package: ltsp-server
Version: 5.0.40~bzr20071229-1
Severity: important

With the new squashfs-tools that migrated to lenny on 2008-02-11, the
script ltsp-update-image does not work anymore.
It seems the default behaviour of mksquashfs has changed in Debian and
the img file is created but can not be uncompressed from the pxe-initrd
image.

I've tried to use the -nolzma option in the mksquashfs execution at
ltsp-update-image but it does not work either.

I can make more tests if some ideas, options or workarounds are
possible.

Sure, I fully agree with you, and that's why that's my last, and very
last, option. And that option would be very studied inside Debian Edu
community before deciding to go on it. And, in case we do it, first
condition would be to always stay in syncr with dhcp3, what would make
debian security team life not so hard.

Anyway, first option is getting that into upstream, but upstream says
they don't want to use it as he doesn't want to make the server
non-rfc-compliant[1] and it's not in his roadmap[2]. Second option is
including it into current dhcp3 package patches, but that does not
depend on me. We're looking forward for some answer from current
maintainers.

For similar reasons, squashfs-modules and unionfs-modules should be added to

The problem is that the themes-move directory was empty without any

In the meantime, if you need it fixed before, download

and copy the contents of the pysycache-src/pysycache/themes-move directory to
/usr/share/games/pysycache/themes-move in your computer and it will work.

Thanks for your reports.

Bug#454635: ITP: squeak-vm -- Virtual machine needed to run Squeak images on unix

El jue, 06-12-2007 a las 23:00 +0100, Daniel Baumann escribió:
squeak is supposed[0] to be unable to package for debian due to legal
reasons. can you elaborate on the current status?

 [0] http://www.debian.org/devel/wnpp/unable-to-package

Sure:
Squeak is being relicensed from the old Apple license to a MIT license.
There have been some hundred of code contributors[1] and most of them
have already signed to relicense it. There is still some parts of the
code whose authors haven't answer to that requirement [2] and parts of
the code is going to be rewritten or removed from Squeak. So Squeak as a
whole can not be uploaded to Debian yet.
But all the virtual machine code is already under MIT [3] and available
under svn [4]. That's why I plan to upload only squeak-vm and not any
Squeak image to Debian. With the squeak-vm any Squeak image can be run:
the official one that's not DFSG compatible yet, but also some others
images that are totally free now [5]
Anyway I'm optimistic and I think that the whole Squeak image will be
available under MIT quite soon, as all the reimaining code and licenses
issues are being studied and fixed by the community and the Software
Freedom Law Center.

I know the whole Squeak paradigm it's a little hard to understand to
those that are not familiar with its use (the concept of program itself
is not the same as with normal languages, same for the image or the
vm), but I hope it's clearer now.

JClic is developed in the Java platform and works in Windows, Linux, Mac
  OS X and Solaris systems.

Have you already built jclic from source? How? I tried to build it using gcj
a long time ago (that is, before GPLd java was announced)

I've done it, but using java from Sun, not gcj. My plans are uploading
this application to Debian contrib until java is finally released under
gpl. I think this app is too used and important to wait for java to be
gpl'ed.

 ... but failed.
Back then I also found other issues related to the packaging and licensing,
 and sent a report upstream[1].

I've been talking with upstream about some of the same issues and they
are about to be fixed. The most important for me: the depedency on some
external libraries for xml support is already fixed (but not uploaded to
cvs yet)

I'm interested in the package, but I was waiting for the inclusion of GPLd
java in Debian before trying to package it again.

Anyway, I would be glad to help co-maintain jclic if you are interested.

Let's wait until the changes to make jclic totally able to compile only
using sun java clases. Then I'll begin to work deeper in the package and
ping you. By the way, I already packaged it for LinEx (our Extremadura
Debian based distribution) some years ago, but doing it from the
binaries, not from the sources, so part of the work is already done.

Thanks for your offer and regards.

I don't think I understand from this what the specification of a package
that would Provide wims-extra would be.

A virtual package exists to satisfy a dependency on a specific piece of
functionality. For example, ispell needs a dictionary, packages need to
depend on a mail transport agent, and Emacs add-ons are only useful if
some version of Emacs is installed.

I think I understand it perfectly. It just a problem of what you and me
can understand as a functionality. You use the ispell example and I can
use the openoffice.org-l10n-2.2 virtual package that works exactly as we
say wims-extra should work: providing a functionality to a metapackage.

Anyway, I don't care about it anymore, as Magnus Holmgren said in a
previous comment to this bug, we can use it privately, amongst a
cooperating group of packages, and that's probably the rightest
solution to this issue.

Bug#434651: debian-policy: New virtual package: wims-extra

2007-07-25 Thread L. Redrejo
Package: debian-policy
Priority: wishlist

Hi all,
Wims is a recent Debian package which will be more widely used in the near
future
as a part of Debian-Edu (currently it is a dependency on its metapackage
education-services)
and it's being use in Linex (Extremadura region official debian based
distribution) schools.

Its installation can be done by requiring the package wims, which
depends from the package wims-modules. When installed, they feature a
webserver for educational exercises of outstanding quality, localised in
many languages.

However most of the meat is provided by the packages wims-extra-xx,
which contain hundreds of educational modules (this number hopefully
will grow quickly). In July 2007, the installed size of wims-extra-all
is roughly 200 MBytes. Some webmasters might want to install less rich
sets of modules, for example only the modules localised in their
language, or a set of modules targeted to a particular domain of study.
There is already a package wims-extra-es with Spanish-only modules, and
some other packages might be made available in the near future, like a
French-only collection, or a collection dedicated to physics and
chemistry, etc.

The current wims maintainer (who is in the cc'ed list for this mail)
asked me to sponsor this package, and, after some conversations with
him, we both agree that wims package should have a recommends to a
virtual package called wims-extra, so people may provide packages for
the meat with their particular flavor, while the package
wims-extra-all providing wims-extra would be part of the official
distribution.

Currently wims-extra is a real package, which is part of Debian Stable
(version 3.60-1), so the situation would be the following after an
acceptation of its name for a virtual package:
   - newer versions of wims and wims-modules (3.62) would enter Unstable
and their dependencies would entail the replacement of any older
 version of wims-extra.
   - the new version of wims-extra (3.62) would be a virtual package.
   - wims-extra-all (version 3.62) would enter Unstable and provide
 wims-extra.
   - wims-extra-es (already part of the distro Linex) would provide
 wims-extra.

So, I propose to add this entry to the virtual package list:

wims-extra - extra exercises, translations and modules that enhance wims
functionalities.

Best regards,
José L.

 Justification: unauthorized udeb

With your latest upload you have added a udeb to your package without
any justification and without any discussion with the Debian Installer
 team on debian-boot at lists.debian.org.

Recently the Technical Committee reaffirmed [1] that udebs and the
debian-installer section of the archive are owned by the Debian
Installer team. Adding udebs to the archive without discussion with the
D-I team is therefore not acceptable.
Even though your intention does seem to be to use the udeb with the
installer, the basic principles are still the same as in that ruling.

 See also: http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2007/07/msg00324.html.

Please remove the udeb from your package with your next upload.
You are of course free to start a discussion with the D-I team about
possible inclusion, but only _after_ the udeb has been removed.

Note that I have requested the Release Managers to block your package
from migrating to testing (as is normal for all packages with udebs).
I will request removal of that block once a new version without the
 udeb has been uploaded.

 Frans Pop

No problem. I will remove it. As you said my intention is not to use it
with the official Debian installer, but with the one we customize at
LinEx (www.gnulinex.org). I didn't know about
http://lists.debian.org/debian-boot/2007/07/msg00324.html, so I'll
upload a new version without it a.s.a.p.
