diald problems. argh.
I've been avoiding configuring diald for a while because it's always looked (from a distance) like hell. Seems to be confirmed by actually trying it. I'm running named on diald system, and wish to keep doing so. My named is configured to forward to other systems, and appears to do this from non-domain ports, so the link will come up correctly. eg I can go to another machine on the network and look up a web site, and it will try to connect. For added hair loss, I'm using IP masquerading too. However a couple of problems. After connecting, diald says Connect script timed out. Killing script. and this is followed some time later by child process 544 terminated with signal 9 and SIGHUP: modem got hung up on. My /etc/diald/diald.options file says connect /etc/ppp/startppp-diald, and that file says pppd connect chat -f /etc/ppp/chatscript which contains my chatscript, and works fine. (I've been dialing for the past few months by running pppd manually.) Any suggestions as to why I get the kill problem? Other problem. I am using dynamic IPs. In diald.options, I put my IP as 203.12.22.253 (eg a dummy on my ISP's network), and the remote IP as 203.12.22.254. When the link comes up, diald establishes a default route but uses the dummy remote address as the gateway, not the real gateway from pppd. If I remove the dud default and add the correct one, it works fine. (Until I get hung up). What's the ALT-F4 stuff?
Robert == Robert Nicholson [EMAIL PROTECTED] writes: Robert Exactly what is this multi screen session concept that Robert allows you to type ALT-F4 and login again... I'd like to Robert read the documentation on this feature. It's virtual consoles! Since Linux is multiuser, you can login more than once. And using the 'gpm' (General Purpose Mouse) program, you can even copy and paste text between VC's. (man gpm, man gpm-root) 'gpm-root' gives you pop-up menus on the text console, which will let you flip over to other VC's higher than the number of function keys you have. The virtual consoles are defined in '/etc/inittab', and the 'getty's and 'login's are run by 'init'. (man inittab, man getty, man init). You can press ALT-F1 through ALT-Fx (look in your inittab to see how many VC's are currently defined. Linux can support up to 64 of them, once the proper device special files are created for them.) Left-Alt Left/Right arrow will cycle through the VC's as well. I've not a memorized list of the docs you should read; but this should get you started. Disk copies and kernel paging request failures
I modified a little public domain dos program that will do a sector for sector copy of one hard drive to up to three other hard drives. Its very handy for quickly duplicating a linux configuration onto other disks of the same type. I've noticed one problem however, When I first start up some of these new disks, I tend to get a rash of Unable to handle kernel paging request errors (2 to 4 of them) in the first day of operation and then they seem to go away. I believe they may be disk related because I see the problem happen with different programs and I seem to have plenty of swap space available when it happens (I've seen it happen with top running and I was using about 1.5MB of swap out of 32MB available). I'm adding a checksum verify to the program this morning and I'm going to start forcing fsck on newly copied disks. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Should I be doing a mkswap -C after the copy (to force a check for bad blocks)? Is there a fsck for swap? Any suggestions are appreciated. ANNOUNCE: New Logo and Feedback Page for the Debian Logo (v5)
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hi folks! I just installed the new Debian Logo Page (v5) today. You can have a look at it via http://fatman.mathematik.tu-muenchen.de/~schwarz/debian-logo/ The new page contains 17 new and 8 old logos and uses HTML forms to make it easy for you to tell us your opinion. We collect all the comments we get this way and make a ``feedback page'' out of it. The current version contains 163 comments. Thanks a lot to all that told us their opinion! Thanks a lot to all who submitted a logo so far! Our plans are to have an official logo until the next Debian release. If you think you can make a better logo or have a nice idea feel free to send me your drafts. We have set up an extra mailing list for discussing these issues: debian-publicity@lists.debian.org Our plans are to have a collection of, say 20 nice logos soon, so that we can start an election. Since we don't have much time left we would appreciate it if people would try to improve the old logos instead of making new ones. So if you want, just take on of those old logos, have a look at the comments at the feedback pages and try to improve it. The next logo page (v6) will be installed on Sun, 2 Feb 1997, the dead line for logo submittions is 10:00am MET (+0100) this day. I was running in 24 bit mode if that matters. .27 kernel -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Trouble? e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: Best Debian CD?
According to Ami Ganguli: Actually, if you've already got DOS running on your pc, it should be possible to put in the CD and run a setup.exe without ever making a boot floppy. MS-DOS may not be installed on every system running Linux. I just recently installed an e-mail server with Debian Linux that does not require a DOS partition. In fact, the ideal would be to have applications available such that DOS or Win95 partitions are not required. IMHO we should continue to support DOS/FAT and Win95/VFAT file systems w/o requiring them for Debian installation. I know it's against most of our philosophies to support the use of DOS in any capacity, but when Caldera releases OpenDOS this could provide a really nice, fast way to install the system and it would still be free. As it stands now, we still need DOS to use rawrite.exe anyway. rawrite.exe is not necessary. You can use dd from an existing Linux/unix system. -- \/ \ Carl Greco PHONE voice: (402) 496-3381 / \ [EMAIL PROTECTED] / \==/ -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . df will tell you how much space their is on each partition du will tell you how much space each directory is taking up. ( Re Message From: John ) I think this a simple enough question, but even my Unix teacher can't answer it. I just installed Debian on my 586 Windoze machine, with a 200mb partition. I DOS, I can use chkdsk, is there a similiar function in Linux? Unexpectedly, the command to run is df. The most important command for people who don't yet know what they can do is apropos. In your case, you want to know about free disk space so you can try apropos free disk space which will throw up summaries of all commands that have to do with free or disk or space, including the command df. df is on most if not all UNIX systems; apropos should be on all; I would expect these things to be known by most experienced UNIX people. X windows
I am running X using xdm. Is there a more elegent way to go to the full screen consoles than kill xdm. When I try to exit fvwm, on the middle button menu, it kills all my windows and restarts X with a new login prompt. MS-DOS may not be installed on every system running Linux. I just recently installed an e-mail server with Debian Linux that does not require a DOS partition. Still I'd say it'd be a good idea, if the system could be installed without having to make boot disks... That's what I liked about RedHat3 when it came out, you could just start linux from the dos prompt and the installation didn't even require you to write boot/root/base disks. (Still for quite a few reasons, I am happy I changed to debian - but I really think that this feature would be good, I just don't like all the hassle with those 6 disks you need for the installation, if everything could alternatively also be done from the CD directly. runlevels and modules
I have two small questions today ;) : a) where can I find information about what the different debian run-levels are used for? 0 is halt, 6 is reboot, 1 is singleuser, but what about the rest? Are there an multiuser with X and one without X? b) when I do an 'lsmod' it says that appletalk, ipx and serial modules are installed. They are used by 0 (autoclean) or 1 (autoclean). What does autoclean mean? I think I should get rid of appletalk and ipx as I don't use them and they're just wasting my memory... Some thoughts for Debian.
I've been watching the debates about Cds, dividing up non-free, and etc.. And I had a few thoughts I wanted to throw out at everyone. I think if debian is going to succeed, it's going to have to be reduced to a standard set of core applications that will make up the offical distribution of debian. Right now, the distribution is huge and it's getting bigger. In the process, it seems less is getting done in the way of providing comprehensive testing, marketing, etc.. of each new release. Many people are handling multiple packages and getting either burnt out or don't have enough time to adequatly test the packages they do maintain. While I understand and applaud the basic concepts behind Debian, it's success will depend on what the commercial community does with it. Therefor, I think the following needs to be done to help Debian get going in the right direction. 1) I realize this process will start a religious debate over what program is the best, but, someone ( everyone? ) needs to decide on the core packages that will make up the offcial distribution. ie smail, sendmail, qmail, etc. which one will debian choose as the default for the distribution? in the case of user apps, one application could be choosen that works on terminals and one that works in X. ( where possible ) ie users will need a mail reader. for terminals: elm for X: exmh this will create a standardized distribution that commercial vendors can easily support. it will reduce greatly the size of the main distribution and will allow devlopers to focus on just the applications that make up the offical distribution plus allow easier beta testing of the distribution as a whole. some things, like games, should definatly not be part of the offcial distribution. while i dearly love xtetris, you can't consider it a necessity. 2) Everything else could be moved over to contrib. ie... since mutt ( a mail reader ) wasn't choosen as part of the offical distribution, it gets put in contrib/mail this will provide alternatives while allowing for a so-called official distribution. someone could be put in charge of maintaining the contrib directory ( oversee the layout of dirs, etc ) but the packages shouldn't be a concern of the core developers... its basically the same system that is in place now, but it shouldn't be bruce's or any other core developers problem if the program doesn't work. 3) revamp the web pages. its the first place a user might check for info on debian and they look really bad right now. ( i know this has already been discussed ) 4) open up the release dates a bit. last i heard, the push was for 3 month cycles. open it to 6 months. while those who want to stay on the cutting edge can do so, some people and most companies want stabilty. this is one area i don't have a clear understanding of. alot of people were excited about the release of slackware96 but the release of debian 1.2 came and went. weird. 5) the quest for a debian logo has produced some really good work from users of debian. i think a similiar push should be made for debian documentation. i know there are some debian users out there who are good at writing and debian could use some really well written FAQs, installation procedures, HOWTOs, etc... just some thoughts -- - Willie Daniel [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://users.quicklink.net/~gith/ - -- TO UNSUBSCRIBE FROM THIS MAILING LIST: e-mail the word unsubscribe to [EMAIL PROTECTED] . Where can I find xterm_color?
I finally got X Windows up and running, and I'm using fvwm95, but when I try and start a new sheel, the message xterm_color appears in my login window. Also, how do I set the LS_OPTIONS so that my directory listings will be in color? Right now I am using an alias, but that's a sloppy way to do it. In linux/unix trype df to see how much space you have, how much is used, and how much is left. Chad Chad D.
