Well I installed from unstable (I think). I have debianmultimedia in my

I did quite a bit of googling before posting. I didnt find anything really
relevant. I looks like a problem with ffmpeg.

Connman vs network manager

2014-03-26 Thread Nils Erik Svangård
Hi!
I run unstable and update/upgrade daily.
A couple of weeks apt thougt it best to remove network-manager and replace
it with connman.
This broke my mounting of NFS-shares described in fstab. I have my home and
media cataloge on a NAS.
I have made an update of rc.init as specified in the Howto.Debian file.
Now I have to log in as root and write mounst -a to get it working.
Is this a bug?

Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including

This is probably because you tried to add that module earlier. Remove
the module by doing a rmmod emu Is is the oss driver and you

Re: Kerberos+LDAP+NIS?

2005-07-21 Thread Nils Erik Svangård
Hi!
Great answer! I will work with this and see if I can get it working.
Regarding the setup, it's not really finished I think. They havent
investigated how and what informations should be stored on the LPAD, I
know for sure that the uid is stored there but other stuff needed for
a working login on linux isnt there, like default shell.
I think that if I can set a default shell on login I guess I could use
LDAP/kerberos + automount and get the same result that I currently get
with NIS/Kerberos. All the users are on the same nfs export I think,
so it wont require that much automount magic. And I just checked on
the LDAP, there is a unused field called NFS home, so if I fill in the
correct parameter like filerserver.ltu.se:/home/nisse in that I could
automount that.
Do you think thats a workable alternative?
The problem is that there is no shell information and I not 100% sure
that the unix id in LDAP is the same as in NIS (it should be, and the
NIS one should be change if it differs).

That is possibly the most absolutely horrifying setup I've ever heard of, and
you have my deepest, most sincere sympathies at having to deal with not only
LDAP/Kerberos but also NIS. It's also worth noting that using NIS is probably
ruining any security you're getting from LDAP/SSL or Kerberos... but with
that out of the way, I think I can help. I'm not hugely familiar with NIS, so
don't assume anything here is true.

Before you start, get a root terminal on your machine and leave it open. If
you make a mistake or my instructions are wrong, you can lose login access to
the system... (don't ever forget this when working on headless remote
 systems... bad experiences)

Okay, first you need to make the LDAP information available to the Name
Service Switch (NSS) part of your system, which will let you check the group
information and such without any particular black magic -- it'll be the same
as if it was in /etc/groups. For this, you want to install and configure
libnss-ldap (left to the reader), then modify your /etc/nsswitch.conf file so
that the 'group:' line looks like this:

group: files ldap

If you haven't already configured the NSS for NIS, do that too. Your
nsswitch.conf file should probably look something like this now:

 passwd: files nis
 group: files ldap
 shadow: files nis
... (rest of the file unchanged)

That will get shell/home information from NIS, group info from LDAP, and
shadow (passwords) from NIS which you say authenticates via Kerberos (are you
sure there aren't any passwords getting tossed around in plain text?). Make
sure this is all working perfectly -- you should be able to 'getent passwd
username' for a user in the NIS system and have it return his data, and you
should also be able to retrieve group info from LDAP with ldapsearch. You
shouldn't need any PAM magic if you're using NIS and it's configured
properly. Then, to restrict login to a certain group, you need some lines
 in /etc/login.access looking something like:

 -:ALL:ALL
 +:groupallowedtologin:ALL

... but I'm not hugely familiar with that file, man login.access for more on
 that.

I've never done anything quite like this (strictly LDAPS/Kerberos here) but I
think that information should at least get you going in the right direction.
I'll say again, however, that the setup you're working with is basically a
trainwreck and is probably leaking passwords and information all over the
place unless it's very carefully designed. Complain to someone with authority
and try to get the NIS information moved into LDAP -- it's generally much
 nicer to administrate.

 Whew! HTH.

Kerberos+LDAP+NIS?

2005-07-20 Thread Nils Erik Svangård
Hello!

I recently got my debian box to authenticate user logins with kerberos!
Now I have created a group in LDAP and I want that only users who is
members of that group are allowed to login. The problem is that no
information of shell or home directory is stored on the LDAP server,
so I thougt that I could use NIS to get that information and automount
to mount my directory.
Is that at all possible?
Has anyone done something like this before?

Re: Kerberos+LDAP+NIS?

2005-07-20 Thread Nils Erik Svangård
I cant! I dont have the authority to do that.
I have setup NIS which authenticate via the Kerberos server. I guess
it would be easiest to just add a group in NIS but LDAP is the future
and there is such nice GUIs.
Where do I prelogin scripting?
Lets say a user enter a username and a password: First it checks via
yp if the user is in passwd and then try to authenitcate via the
kerberos server (via pam_krb5).
What I want is a
if(in_ldap(username))
{
  if(check_with_yp(username))
{
   if(krb5_authenticate(username,password)
 {
 login()
 }
 }
 }
Where do I do this kind of magic? Somewhere with Pam?

NFS problems

2005-07-19 Thread Nils Erik Svangård
Hi!
I made a recently got a new disk and took the opertunity to do a new
debian installation, the old one I installed was installed about 1999
and I have been doing apt-get update, upgrade daily.
Three days ago I needed to use my nfs exports, but they didnt work.
There seem to be something wrong with /usr/sbin/rpc.mountd or/and
/usr/sbin/rpc.nfsd, because if I mount my old harddrive and run thoose
directly from the old installation nfs works happily, I have run snoop
from a solaris workstation and it seems that nfsd is not working on my
machine.
Does anyone noticed the same problem?

Can I do anything to get rid of them?
Is there stuff that I have to change to use kernel 2.6.0 in debian?

You need to copy the whole tree of $PGDATA. (By default, that is in
/var/lib/postgres, unless you set it to be somewhere else.) Its
 contents should look like this:

 olly@linda$ sudo ls $PGDATA
 PG_VERSION global pg_hba.confpg_xlogpostmaster.opts
 base pg_clog pg_ident.conf postgresql.conf postmaster.pid

To be clear, the database includes eseential files at the top level of
$PGDATA; you cannot simply copy part of the tree.

Your backup procedures should include the use of pg_dumpall to copy the
database either to another machine, or to a tape, or at least to another
 disk in the same machine.

Together is not a free tool (not in the Open Source sense at least).
The ControlCenter version of Together requires a license file in order
to run. You can go on www.togerthersoft.com and register in order to get
one. They will send you a temporary license in order to evaluate their
 tool.
hmm.. that is the problem, I have now registered at the togethersoft

Thanks for anwering.

ROX eating memory?

2002-04-01 Thread Nils-Erik Svangård
Hi!

I'm running unstable, on an AMD XP1800, 512 Mb.
My free swap and memory seems to be less and less for every day that
goes by. I have 19 days uptime with 2.4.18.
If I start a VNC server the same thing happens, after a while that
process starts using 97% of the CPU and the swap just fills up. That can
be a unrelate problem.
Right now X is using 160Mb of the swap and 10% of the mem. Should X
have such big memory mark?
Using ps to check that process it seems that the largest chunk used by
that process is in the adress range 081bd000-1014f000 , size 130632Mb
offset , device 3,5 inode 0, file (anonymous).
The other users on my system dont have the same problem when using vnc,
the only difference is that I use ROX. I dont know if that is related.
I use blackbox.

Does anyone know what is happening?

I have installed debian on atleas 20 diffrent computers, but now I have
come across a problem I cannot solve.

Im installing on AST Bravo P133MHz 128 Mb ram, onboard MACH64, PCI128,
3c905b, one 1.3 Gb disk and one 15Gb drive. All hardware should be
compatible with Linux.

Problems:

* During startup via loadlin and stuff. I get an error message about some
memory error NMI.

* The NICs IRQ is set to 0, which when setting it admits that it probably
wont work, in windows its irq 11

* When booting from floppy or hardrive I get L40404040404040404 which
means seek error I think, first I thought that there was problems finding
my 15Gb drive, so I made a 40 Mb partition on hda (in the end), but I get
the same error. I hasve read somwhere that you can append=linear in
lilo.conf, I havent tried this resently, but on my 15Gb disk it didnt
work.

My 15 Gb disk is partitioned to 9 partitions.

Does anyone have a clue?

Creating booklets with Latex

2000-05-13 Thread Nils-Erik Svangård

Hello!

About a week ago I wrote to this list and asked about creating booklets
with latex. I got many replies, several helped me alot.

Now I have a new problem with the booklet making.

The problem:
The booklet is supposed to be in A6 format. So I wrote the text on A5 used
psbook to make A5 booklets, this far it worked fine. Then I got the
brilliant idea to print two booklets simontanuosly on a A4. This is
good because then I can have red cover and white pages, and when I've
printed the pages I just cut horizontally and I have two booklets with
a nice cover. This however proved to difficult for me. I cant even get
one fold of the booklet to print correctly on a A4.

This is how its supposed to look

To configure sound in debian I always use alsaconf. You can get alsaconf

Horde/IMP problem with MySQL

2000-03-28 Thread Nils-Erik Svangård
Hello all!

I cant get Horde up an running. I installed with the command apt-get
install imp. And it installed everything beutifully. I was asked a lot of
questions via the debconf utility, I'm pretty sure a gave the right
values. However I get this error message when trying to connect to the
server:

Fatal error: Call to unsupported or undefined function mysql_pconnect() in
db_mysql.inc on line 73.

I suspect that there is something wrong with my files, as there probably
are no faulty binaries in the freshly installed .deb.
In the documentation there is mentioned that there could be problems with
using my_sql on Debian systems, because the maintainer use PostgresSQL
witch makes testing with My_SQL a bit harder.

Any ideas?

And while I'm on and asking is there a command to reconfigure whole
packages? (like apt-get reconfigure imp)

I have located the .c file that contains that row, but havent been able to

So my questions are
- is it possible to get a UNIX keyboard working on i386 board?
- has this already been done, where can i find info?
- do i have to make a kernel module that checks all input values

 1. I can't use programms like gmix anymore, even the volume-control in
xmms doesn't work. Before you told me about ALSA, I got it to work
with the normal kernel-modules, there the gmix and volume-control of
 xmms worked fine.

 2. Somehow, my sound sounds ;-) a little bit tinny, not that quality I
normally would expect. With some songs I have very strong fluctuations
concerning the volume of music and voice, sometime the voice becomes
that quiet that you can't hear it anymore. And the overall volume
fluctuates also very much, strange? I thought about DMA or IRQ
conflicts, but that doesn't seem to be the case (/proc/interrupts and
/proc/dma) This was also the case the time before ALSA stepped into my
 life ;-)

 Does anybody have an idea??

Hi!

Try to load the support for OSS/Free mixer e.g insmod snd-mixer-oss
and then I should work fine.
I have never experianced any fluctuation useing my AWE64, it sounds very
strange (the statment not the soundcard). There is alot of information in
/proc/asound about the cards.
You could also try pnpdump and check if it wants you to use other values
than thoose you are currently using. (Make sure that you dont have any
soundmodules loaded when using it, otherwise it wont find it, or at least
it didnt find it for me).

Hi!

I run Soundblaster AWE64PnP, but I use ALSA, it works flawlessly, in the
beginning I had to insmod snd-pcm1-oss, to get the OSS emulation working.
I didnt touch isapnp.conf, the system take care of all that stuff, you
have to have isapnptools install though. ALSA supports multiple soundcards
I currently use 2, the AWE64 and Soundblaster PCI 128, no problems at all.
If you want to compile alsa for a recent kernel you have to install
alsa-source then you:
unpack kernel source in /usr/src
tar xfvz linux-4.2.tar.gz
then untargzip alsadriver.tar.gz which is located in /usr/src
tar xfvz alsadriver.tar.gz
then cd linux
make menuconfig
make sure to add support for sound
the use kernel-make package which compiles the kernel and makes a
installable .deb file
make-kpkg --revision 1 kernel_image
in /usr/src/linux
then when it is finished
do a
make-kpkg --revision 1 modules_image
when it's finished you'll have two .debs in /usr/src which is easily
installed with dpkg -i *.deb
reboot and run alsaconf to configure the soundcards
the soundcard is by default muted so you have to check with amxier
to set PCM to max and umute you have to
amixer set PCM 100% unmute
master, treble, bass is stuff you might want to ummute, be careful with
Output Gain it can damage your ears.
instead of amixer you can use alsamixer, but it doesnt seem to work yet.

or...

you can install kernel_image-2.2.13 and use the precompiled drivers in
alsa-modules

Whoa I just realised this anwer is alittle overkill, but hey I like ALSA.

Hello.

This sounds like a configuration error, perhaps if you check your
ftp-deamons configuration files you can find out what is wrong. My guess
is that you have to change something in /etc/ftpallow or /etc/ftpusers.

The second step you should consider is to post your message at a Red Hat
specific mailing-list or be a little more discrete about the fact that you
are posting a Red Hat question on a Debian GNU/Linux list (if you do I'm
sure you will get a lot more responses). You should also consider to
install Debian (but it seems strange that you subscribe to this list and
dont use Debian (but if you dont check out www.debian.org)).

Good Luck.

Oh the other hand.. Is the matrox card supported for 3D acceleration?

I fear it isn't. The G200 is driven by the SVGA X server, and to the best of
my knowledge this one doesn't use any acceleration, like e.g. the S3
 server.

Actually, the package mc appears not to by installed on my

Hi
1: run modconf as root, go into the subdir net an press enter on the ne200
module, the module should prompt you for a io adress enter io=0x300 or 330
depending of what you have. Then hopefully you can read Installation
successfull on the screen.
2: Configure the network (/etc/init.d/network)

Okay, is there any walk-through written on how to configure my home

I've recompiled my kernel to give me module support of them, but now I'm
stuck. Can anyone point me in the right direction so I can find the
 instructions?

(FWIW I've read the NET-3 HowTo, and find it sadly lacking.)

PS2 and gpmconfig

1999-04-29 Thread Nils-Erik Svangård

I recently bought a PS2 mouse and a PS2 adapter. I fitted the PS2 adapter
on the motherboard, and connected the mouse. Went to the bios and enabled
PS2 mouse. When I rungpmconfig the keyboard locks, when i go to the bios
and try to use the mouse, the keyboard locks. And yes I'm sure I put the
adpter in the right way (I checked the manual) and I hvae tried it the
other way around to.

The mouse work on other computers..
Any ideas?

Re: Network problems with Vortex Adapter

1999-04-18 Thread Nils-Erik Svangård

I have had similar problems with 3c905b.
The trouble is propbably that the PCI card is in the first PCI slot, the
bios has problems reporting it to the kernel. Check the /proc/pci what irq
it has, if no irq is shown than its the PCI slot. You can either change
position of the card or turn PCI to manual in the bios, and assigning a
free irq to that card.
On thr other hand you could be lucky and have just misconfigured.
make sure that the correct module is loaded then go to
/etc/init.d/networks and check that the values are correct.

 Hi

The kernel is configured with the correct Vortex driver but the adapter
does not connect with or even see the other machines on the network. It
has the correct IP address and can 'ping' itself but no other machine
can ping it or vice versa.
I tried moving it around in the machine but that doesn't work either. I
down loaded the latest version of the driver and re-compiled the kernel
 and nothing.

Re: Installing GCC

1999-04-13 Thread Nils-Erik Svangård
Hi
If I am not totally wrong, a 'dpkg -i gcc_2.91.66-1.deb' should solve your
problems.
Do it as root, and if complain about some package it depends on, get
thoose packages ( in .deb format) and use dpkg -i to install them.
If you have the debian cd-set, you can use dselect to install gcc.

fdisk problem

1999-04-12 Thread Nils-Erik Svangård
I recently tried to install debian on a win98 system.
Did all the usual stuff, defrag, scandisk, fips, install.bat.
As alway everything run perfectly, but this time there where problems with
partitioning the harddrive. The partitioning program that comes with the
bootfloppy, cdisk or something, just bugged out saying that it encountered
a error. I switch virtual console and ran fdisk and tried to add a new
partition. It didnt work, fdisk complained about the logical and physical
offsets, or something, was not the same. And that there were no free
sectors, however when i printed the partition table, I saw the win95
partition and a chunk of free space.
Any ideas?
