Title: Message You all will be glad to know that smartertools has now agreed that support for SMTP AUTH ONLY on port 587 will be in version 3.0 when it comes out in December. They said earlier today that it likely would not be included because they were so close to release that it might be too late. However, I showed them postings from their forums where people had requested this feature going all the way back to 2004. I also shared some comments from our Declude list discussion on the topic over the last two days. It must have been enough to convince them of the need because they wrote back now confirming that it will be in 3.0. They said the listserver enhancements are slated for later. Re: [Declude.JunkMail] Declude with SmarterMail 3.0
Hi, Matt - I had a similar experience. That's why haven't migrated yet. They simply did not understand - and what's worse, did not*want*to understand - why a SmartHost gateway would need to receive a list of acceptable addresses from the main server for which it is the gateway. They seemed to have no conception of dictionary attacks, SMTP envelope-level rejection, etc. It seems everyone's experience with the port 587 issue has been the same. I'm still not impressed. -Dave Dohetry Skywaves, Inc - Original Message - From: Matt To: Declude.JunkMail@declude.com Sent: Sunday, October 30, 2005 8:56 PM Subject: Re: [Declude.JunkMail] Declude with SmarterMail 3.0 My own initial experience with their technical support was also less than appealing, in fact I was a bit angry about how it was handled. I'm really surprised. My experience with SmarterTools has been nothing short of stellar. I've had two separate instances over the last year or so where I've had problems that a tech has made it his personal business to work through with me. One was a nightmarish install of a gateway in front of SM (i.e. not really their fault) and another was a mysterious problem where the mail server suddenly started eating bandwidth for no reason (it wasn't sending or receiving anything, and a reinstall eventually fixed the problem) and they wound up walking me thru a safe reinstall. When I gratefully asked if they wanted my cc# as this was a for-pay support call I was told that only comes into play with users who abuse the privilege of tech support and call them over and over. A week or so ago I posted on their forum asking how to migrate a bunch of smartermail domains from one server and integrate them into another one thats already running. They wrote up and posted a special KB article for that circumstance. Re: [Declude.JunkMail] Declude with SmarterMail 3.0
My own initial experience with their technical support was also less than appealing, in fact I was a bit angry about how it was handled. The person really wasn't too interested in helping to allay my concerns, and when I suggested that it would be good to include the capabilities that I was looking for in a future release, the reaction was pretty much that the developers were busy with SmarterStats and would be for some time, and that there wasn't a good way to get my request to the developers and no way to find out whether or not it would be considered no matter what. I chalked this up to this being a small company with a person that handled such requests that didn't like doing support, and possibly developers that didn't care for listening to such things and had set up a wall to separate themselves from it. It's too bad because you can learn a lot from your customers and their real-world experiences that wouldn't otherwise become known to them. I sucked it up and stuck with migrating my hosted E-mail over to SmarterMail despite this bad experience. If IMail's Web interface wasn't so bad, I probably wouldn't have jumped though. FYI, my issue was with their alternative SMTP port support. While you can set port 587 to accept SMTP connections, you cannot restrict it to only SMTP AUTH. I tried multiple other ways to keep this server from accepting non-authenticated E-mail with a mixture of configurations and filtering, but there were shortcomings for everything that caused a workaround to be unrealistic. For instance, I tried blacklisting everything except for authenticated connections, but their blacklisting will whitelist E-mail from any local address, even when forged. I understand that Declude will support WHITELIST AUTH with SmarterMail 3.0, but I have heard nothing about them addressing SMTP AUTH-only on the alternative SMTP port. Hopefully they will fix that before it gets exploited on my server. Matt, SMTP Auth on port 587 is exactly why I called them last week. I recommend that everyone email [EMAIL PROTECTED] requesting support of submission port 587 in version 3.0 of smartermail. RE: [Declude.JunkMail] Declude and Smartermail?
This is not an oversight in Declude as the functionality is there in imail but in SmarterMail not passing the auth info to Declude. There is nothing Declude can do until SmarterMail supplies the data to Declude. I think you have this backwards: the hang-up here isn't Declude, it's SmarterMail. I'm very interested in SmarterMail myself, but I'm not even going to try a trial until they add the AUTH feature. re: [Declude.JunkMail] Declude and Smartermail?
I've been using Declude with SmarterMail for about six weeks. I'm generally pleased with the results except for some minor problems. Two problems that I've run into that I can't seem to get resolution from Declude support are: 1. When certain spams are sent to multiple addresses on the server, only one EML file is generated. This sets up an error where Declude detects the spam, tries to move it to the hold directory, but since there are multiple instances, the next person in the BCC still gets the spam because Declude has already moved the original EML file and thinks it is gone. 2. There are occurrances where the blacklist tests done by Declude (basically anything that needs a DNS lookup) fail, yet the same message is caught by the same blacklists tests done by SmarterMail. Overall though, Declude is definitely blocking more spam than SmarterMail would do alone. There should be NO production Declude/SmarterMail installations as we are still in Beta mode and we are not recommending anyone goes into full production until we have completely tested the software. We are carefully rolling out this beta version to avoid greater complications later on. Currently the software works almost identically in SmarterMail as in IMail except for the following Actions: MAILBOX - This uses an IMail specific function and the ROUTETO can be used instead. BOUNCEONLYIFYOUMUST - Not available now but we are looking into this. All customers who have registered for the beta will be contacted as their name comes to the top of the list or their operating system and configuration meets our testing needs. As I posted before Christmas: Beta Trial Installs Issue - The availability of the Beta Trial software for Declude and SmarterMail. Currently the software works almost identically in SmarterMail as in IMail except for the following Actions: MAILBOX - This uses an IMail specific function and the ROUTETO can be used instead. We tested Declude with SmarterMail and identified some issues, so we are awaiting the next release of Declude before deploying it on the production SmarterMail server. Can I ask... (if you can't say it's ok)... does it hook in directly to SmarterMail and can do all the actions just like with IMail? Or is it an exe that runs when mail comes in and all it can do is delete mail? I then filed a bug, actually Declude/SM didnt work at all on our lab server - tkt number is IGG-76544 opened on 12/20 On 12/23 tkt was updated by Declude, saying that there was an issue with 2.0b that could cause the problem I had posted in tkt, On 12/27 I asked ifa new executable had been uploaded, and was told no. I hope this clarifies that I did indeed read the pre-Xmas post and did indeed follow those instructions. I think there may be a communications problem within Declude (compare the tkt to this post): Peter - Original Message - From: "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Declude.JunkMail@declude.com Sent: Wednesday, December 29, 2004 12:44 PM Subject: RE: [Declude.JunkMail] Declude and Smartermail As I posted before Christmas: Beta Trial Installs Issue - The availability of the Beta Trial software for Declude and SmarterMail. We specified clearly in our email to all customers, posted on the Home page of our web site and at the point of download the only permissible manner in which we would accept participants for this important process. "Declude Beta Release for SmarterMail - For those of you who wish to try the Beta version of Declude for SmarterMail please email [EMAIL PROTECTED] with your name, organization, email address, email system host name, operating system and telephone number and we will contact you. No keys will be issued in the short term without going through this process." Resolution - We are now restricting all downloads to those who follow the request procedures ___ The issue still remains that customers did not follow the procedures so we are emailing customers direct with the exe files necessary to install the beta software. The exe is being updated each time we resolve an issue and it is more appropriate to manage the process in this way. I hope this clarifies the position. Sent this previous email a couple of days back but since it is a beta I guess email support is not supported. FYI, we have no record of any support requests from you. So declude team, app does not work yet on SmarterMail. It does, but apparently not on your server. :) No logs generated, so looks like declude is not being called - and in SM protocol settings it is set to call declude d:\SmarterMail\Declude.exe %filepath But no mail gets delivered, it goes into a new folder called spool/proc which did not exist before so I guess this is a declude thing. But mail just sits there. So disabled Declude and mail is delivered again. Scott, you should have a record because I even have a tkt # - it is IGG-76544 dated 12/20/04. I got the autoresponse but thats it. FYI, tried this on 2 dev servers with same results (I renamed host name of the second server when it did not work on first), both with the same executable so maybe that is where problem is (i.e. declude installer).
