RE: [Declude.JunkMail] Off Topic - Content Filter Suggestions
I spent several months researching and testing many Windows- and Linux-based content filters because we wanted to replace Websense. The uppers thought it was too expensive. Long story short, after all my research I found that no other filter held a candle to Websense. I still don't like it, but it is the best. HostingAccelerator is not very good at all, it's full of bugs and the support is awful. We host and manage over 100 servers and have tried our just about every control panel out there. In my opinion, Plesk 7.x or later on Linux and HELM on Windows is the way to go. We looked at Plesk on Windows a while back and it was not quite ready for prime time, but the new versions may be much improved. We plan to take another look soon. RE: [Declude.JunkMail] Off Topic.
I've done a lot of research into this area, demoing most of the windows packages out there, and I like Helm from Webhostautomation the best. It has its quirks (at the time I tested it, over a year ago, a new user couldn't choose their own username I think), but it controls everything (including Imail natively) perfectly with no glitches when I tried it. I would like to test the distributed mode, which controls your whole network centrally via agents installed on your dns servers, mail servers, web servers, etc. With the single install package I had to test with, all that had to be installed on the one machine. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Frederick Samarelli Sent: Friday, March 18, 2005 11:24 AM To: Declude.JunkMail@declude.com Subject: [Declude.JunkMail] Off Topic. What are the desired features, and drawbacks of existing packages? We have an in-house developed system we use for managing account info, IIS 5 servers, IMail, and MS DNS, with a SQL Server backend. Currently it's tailored exactly to our procedures and packages, but if there's enough interest we could add any missing features and make it more flexible for general use. RE: [Declude.JunkMail] Off Topic? - Complaints from AOL
Problem is AOLs new REPORT SPAM button. What happens is a user on your server has his Imail forward his e-mail to his AOL address. When that user gets spam, he hits the REPORT SPAM button. Guess what, he just reported YOUR IP address. Another example of AOL stupidity. There response to my complaint about this, (which they admit has become a big problem,) is we have to educate our users not to use the AOL button. Since when are we paid to support AOL? The notice makes reference to a Report Card but there isno link to view it, and nothing attached or quoted. There is a link to http://postmastesr.info.aol.com, which has a procedure to create a feedback loop for forwarding individual copies of complaints. I set that up on Friday, received a confirmation, but nothing else. Another notice arrived today advising 507 complaints. I have nothing but the three notices from AOL. I have no details on what are the complaints, nothing from any AOL users. How do I find out WHAT is going on? [EMAIL PROTECTED] hasn't responded to my inquiries. A case of the bug guy bullying everyone else...instead of fixing the problem and looking further up the chain to see the actual sender. On another note, they can't get their feedback loop notifications straight. We get a ton of them from a neighboring IP range. 6 weeks, half a dozen phone hour-long phone calls, two trouble tickets, and an escalated case number later and they still can't get it fixed. Re: [Declude.JunkMail] Off Topic? - Complaints from AOL
How about their damn Joe-Job bounces coming back without even the content to tag? Then there's Earthlink and their challenge/response crap. These companies take all the PR they can get for "solving the spam problem" when they are in fact inhibiting the solution for the vast majority of us. There's only two things that will generally get them to stop; 1) bad publicity (which they are unfortunately used to), or 2) lawsuits. One thing though that I'm sure about, complaining about it doesn't help in the majority of cases. Re: [Declude.JunkMail] Off Topic? - Complaints from AOL
It usually takes a few days to get everything set with them, but you definitely want to be on the feedback loop, and on the whitelist. You can request both from postmaster.aol.com. Also, at the bottom of the FAQs is the postmaster phone number if you want to talk to them. Don't be surprised if it takes a while to get everything straight. Also, they have some problems with the RegExp code in their feedback system, so you may end up with notifications for emails that didn't come from your server. I've had an open case with them for over a month now on that. They don't respond well via email, so I would call them if I were you. Be prepared to be on hold a long time unless you call after hours. I recommend after 8pm ET / 5pm PT. Actually, another fellow on the list here sent me an addy for an admin contact at AOL. I emailed that contact and was amazed to receive a response within minutes, and even a request for my phone number so he could call to discuss the situation. I've got the feedback loop going now, and am in the process of tracing the incidents to specific users. Re: [Declude.JunkMail] Off Topic? - Complaints from AOL
Well, wish I had that much luck with AOL... You may want to add a header via Declude to log the recipient. Helps with tracking down who actually pushed the "Report as Spam" button in AOL since they remove that information when sending the Client TOS notification. Change the MIME type in IIS to something that isn't text or otherwise displayable in the browser window. Doug- This sounds like it could be solved by setting up a customMIME type for .ldif files. If a MIME type is not prsent, the browser resports to plain text. RE: [Declude.JunkMail] Off topic - iis, web servers and txt files
That is default behavior for Internet Explorer. To display a text file. You could zip it on the server side so when they click the link it asks them to download the zip file. Or if I actually answer your origional post You could add your own mime type for your .ldif. If the browser does not recognize it it will ask to download the file. Do it on the HTTP Headers tab. I tried this on the normal Imail list with no answers, so I figured since this list is more of the imail power users I'd try here I'm trying to write a vb.net program to query the ldap and create a 3 different files from it. one is a standard csv file, next is an ldif file for importing into Win Addr Book, and 3rd is a format compatible to the alias.txt file in users directories. This program runs nightly. The problem I'm running into is you call Ldap : / / xx.xx.xx.xx / ou=orgunit, o=org (space intentional so I don't get a link) since Imail's ldap is flat not a tree, I'm not sure what to put for the part ou=orgunit, o=org Any idea's? --- [This E-mail was scanned for viruses by Declude Virus (http://www.declude.com)] --- This E-mail came from the Declude.JunkMail mailing list. Re: [Declude.JunkMail] Off topic- advice needed
If you have volume, someone somewhere is going to have this stuff submitted to SpamCop and MailPolice, and even some of the addresses may well now be used as a spamtrap (remember, we're dealing with human administrators). The E-mail addresses will also be quite dirty because I'm guessing that they weren't collected with a confirmation or even a double entry form. Try using VERP to cleanse your lists from multiple bounces. Register a domain name solely for this purpose and put it on a different class C than your other mail is hosted on, and certainly send it from an IP that isn't being used for these other purposes. As far as the messages go, provide a clear opt-out mechanism with click and confirm (two clicks, no login). Naturally, I have never done this before, so consider it for what it's worth. RE: [Declude.JunkMail] OFF TOPIC Internet Filters
Filtering, whether it is web or email, isn't just about letting some pretty blatant and obvious sites through. It is about what are the policies that you have set for people to follow. What are the concequences for not folowing the rules. What did they sign. What training do you provide/demand on Internet use. I don't get to the naughty sites unless I click on a link somewhere. Isn't it interesting that some people don't get strange websites or junk email. It's most often that they don't give out their email address to every site that wants it; make sure they uncheck the box that allows special offers to be sent and generally act responsibly about their Internet use. If there are no policies then the filtering etc will become more and more out of control. You should have 3 partitions. (4 if you put the page file on its own.) Partition 1: System Partition 2: Imail Declude such Partition 3: Spool file Partition 4: Page file. You may also want to create to page file partitions for protection, as it is not recommend to mirror the page file. Partition 5 Page file B Using 4 partitions on 3 drives I would go like this: Drive 1 Partition 1 Partition 2 Partition 4 Drive 2 Partition 1 Partition 3 Drive 3 Partition 2 Partition 3 Ultimately, I would put logs on a separate partition also, but could be on the same as Imail Declude such. Re: [Declude.JunkMail] Off topic DNS question
For you DNS gurus. Sorry for the off-topic post. We just transferred a domain from a web host that went out of business and put our nameserver information in this morning as authoritative. I just ran the DNS tools on the declude site and it shows the root servers as still pointing to the old host (whose nameservers are not alive). Although it can technically take as long as 5 days for the information to get from the registrar to the root servers, in practice it takes about 24 hours (usually no longer than 48 hours). Once the root servers are updated: The TTL is listed as TTL=172800 (which I pray is in seconds). My question is will the root servers update within the next 24 hours from the registrar or does the TTL have to expire? The TTL is in seconds. The root servers have the NS records set with a 48 hour TTL (172800 seconds). That means that once the root servers are updated, any DNS servers that have tried looking up the domain in the past 48 hours will still try connecting to the old nameservers. But, the good news is that any DNS servers that don't have the old NS records cached will go to the root servers. So the whole process should take about 3 days or so, but could be a bit more or less. -Scott --- [This E-mail was scanned for viruses by Declude Virus (http://www.declude.com)] --- This E-mail came from the Declude.JunkMail mailing list.
