Ending IRC Meetings
Hey all, So, we had a very slim turnout again today for the IRC meeting. I believe we're doing well enough communicating via email and using the available tools that most folks no longer feel they need to discuss issues in real time. (Or they're in IRC enough to have those discussions with other folks in #cloudstack-dev at other times and don't need a fixed time to do so.) At this point, I'm going to suggest we take the weekly meeting off the schedule. If there's a need down the road to set up a weekly meeting, we can always fire it up again. I noticed the comment when I was doing the weekly news - but it was buried in an email with the subject "coding convention reminder" - which tells most readers "this email is a reminder, there are no changes involved in this." There was no discussion of the change, though there was discussion about the Eclipse templates, etc. In the future, might be good to break out proposals for changes in a separate email. Fwd: IMPORTANT: Major Confluence Upgrade Coming Soon. Please review test instance now.
Just in case they don't send directly to our dev@ list. Major upgrade coming to the wiki, some downtime ahead on Saturday, and some features may not work afterwards. Please read! - Original message - From: gmcdonald To: committ...@apache.org Subject: IMPORTANT: Major Confluence Upgrade Coming Soon. Please review test instance now. Date: Tue, 18 Jun 2013 21:56:28 +1000 [Note this message may be received twice as this may also hit any dev lists you subscribe to] Hi All, If your project has a Confluence Wiki then this is an IMPORTANT announcement for you and your project. Please read this email carefully. NOTICE: The ASF Confluence instance is planned to be upgraded this Saturday 22nd June 2013. Judging by the time taken to upgrade the test instance, please expect the service to be in a down or read only state for the entire day. This email is to let you know that a test upgrade has already occurred and is live for you to play with now. This gives us all an opportunity to test for stability as well as any upgrade/plugin issues that might have happened along the way. Our current confluence wiki is at version 3.4.9 from way back in February 2011 and Atlassian have released a further 45 updates along the way, including another 2 major versions. The test instance has been upgraded several times along the way, with database surgery, operating system and server changes along the way. There have been casualties. Most notably is the Autoexport Plugin has had to be disabled permanently as during extensive testing, this plugin stopped working on version 4.3. Templates and Macros are also affected with major changes from wiki markup to xhtml amongst other things. Some plugins survived with upgrades all the way whilst some have been decommissioned/replaced or have changed to 'paid for' versions that we need to sort out licensing for. Nothing major that I can tell, but that's where you lot come in with your testing of your own spaces. Please familiarise yourself with what's new in Confluence 5.1 at https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/DOC/Confluence+5.1+Release+Notes and also take a good look around our upgraded test instance. Do not worry about mucking anything up on the test instance as that is what it is there for. Any changes/additions made will be lost on Saturday when a new migration will take place. The current confluence version will remain online in a read only state until the new version is completed. A jira ticket has been raised at https://issues.apache.org/jira/browse/INFRA-6406 where projects can add comments on any issues they are having with the test instance as compared to their old site. Just problems only please, do not turn it into a how to use confluence 5 thread. In addition, if there are any features that you currently use that do not work in the test instance, please replicate the feature in the current production TEST space so that I can test them all in the one place along the way. (Ask if you need create page permissions to cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/TEST ) It may be possible in the future to replace Autoexport by playing around with the API to export the pages but this is not a priority, nor is it supported. We warned projects long ago that the Autoexport Tool would be incompatible with future Confluence versions and that time has now come. Ok so, please test and report to the Jira Issue mentioned anything amiss with your space. Go to https://cwiki2.apache.org/confluence and have a play around. You have 3 DAYS to report anything you find. Thanks Gavin (ASF Infra) Best, jzb -- Joe Brockmeier j...@zonker.net Twitter: @jzb http://www.dissociatedpress.net/

Hack Day at CloudStack Collaboration Conference
Hey all, As you know, the conference is coming up in less than two weeks. The first day is going to be a "hack day" using an un-conference/BarCamp type structure where we ask attendees to set the agenda and have spaces set aside to work on things or have more interactive sessions to hammer out ideas. This will probably work best if we start brainstorming before the event, so I've set up a page on the wiki for folks to propose sessions. Please take a minute to add topics you'd like to address during the hack day with a description and suggested leader for that session. (This is usually going to be the person proposing the idea, but might be a suggestion for someone else if you think they'd be better suited.) Here's the page on the wiki - please go wild and add the topics you think we need to hit on during the hack day! (Note, adding a session isn't a guarantee that it'll be chosen, but it's a good way to build interest ahead of time and ensure the right folks are there and ready to roll.) https://cwiki.apache.org/confluence/display/CLOUDSTACK/Hack+Day+at+CCC13 Best, jzb -- Joe Brockmeier j...@zonker.net Twitter: @jzb http://www.dissociatedpress.net/

Apache CloudStack 4.1.0 Released
The Apache CloudStack project is pleased to announce the 4.1.0 release of the CloudStack Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) cloud orchestration platform. This is the first major release from Apache CloudStack since its graduation from the Apache Incubator on March 20th. Apache CloudStack is an integrated software platform that allows users to build a feature-rich IaaS. CloudStack includes an intuitive user interface and rich API for managing the compute, networking, accounting, and storage resources for private, hybrid, or public clouds. The 4.1.0 release represents more than five months of development effort by the Apache CloudStack community. The release includes many new features and bugfixes from the 4.0.x cycle. The 4.1.0 release also marks major changes in the codebase to make CloudStack easier for developers, a new structure for creating RPM/Debian packages, and completes the changeover to using Maven as a build tool. ## New Features Some of the notable new features in Apache CloudStack 4.1.0 include: * An API discovery service that allows an end point to list its supported APIs and their details. * Added an Events Framework to CloudStack to provide an "event bus" with publish, subscribe, and unsubscribe semantics. Includes a RabbitMQ plugin that can interact with AMQP servers. Introduces the notion of a state change event. * Implement L3 router functionality in the Nicira NVP plugin, and including support for KVM (previously Xen-only). * API request throttling to prevent attacks via frequent API requests. * AWS-style regions. * Egress firewall rules for guest networks. * Resizing root and data volumes. * Reset SSH key to access VMs. * Support for EC2 Query API. * Autoscaling support in conjunction with load balancing devices such as NetScaler. ## Downloads The official source is available from: http://cloudstack.apache.org/downloads.html In addition to the official source code release, individual contributors also make convenience binaries available. 4.1.0 convenience binaries should be available within a day or so of the release announcement. Note that there is a known issue with 4.1.0 and a recent Tomcat release. This has been addressed in the convenience binaries, but is still present in 4.1.0 source release. We will be working on a 4.1.1 release that will contain that fix shortly. ## CloudStack Collaboration Conference The CloudStack community will be gathering for its second conference this month in Santa Clara, CA. The event will start on June 23rd with a hackathon, then formal programming on June 24th and 25th. This year we've gotten some fantastic keynotes, including DevOps legend Gene Kim (author of "The Phoenix Project"). You can find all the details at http://www.cloudstackcollab.org/, and the schedule at http://www.cloudstackcollab.org/schedule/. ## About Apache CloudStack Apache CloudStack is a complete software suite for creating Infrastructure-as-a-Service (IaaS) clouds. Target environments include service providers and enterprises. It is used by many service providers to set up an on-demand, elastic cloud computing services and by enterprises to set up a private cloud for use by their own employees. Apache CloudStack is also available to individuals and organizations that wish to study and implement an IaaS for personal, educational, and/or production use. Instead of sending a reminder, I wanted to ping the list and see whether we had enough interest to sustain the meeting time. Thoughts, suggestions, comments, flames? (Note - the KDE folks are *very* touchy about 4.0 *still* being held up as a high-water mark of poor judgement in releases, which is in and of itself a cautionary tale for releasing something that's not ready...) Why are users waiting for us to officially release instead of grabbing artifacts from Jenkins? In large part, they're waiting for the project to "bless" the quality of the release by saying it's ready. Time-based releases are supposed to be a way of ensuring that we don't hold up releases indefinitely because of missing features - but I don't think that extends to knowingly releasing something that is a pretty serious bug. [DISCUSS] Do we need a 4.0.3?
Hi all, We apparently have a regression in 4.0.2 that will break new deployments on Ceph RDB, and I was also CC'ed on another fix last week that could apply to the 4.0.x branch. The thought was that we would not have another release in the 4.0.x branch because we're so close to 4.1.0, but right now it's unclear how quickly 4.1.0 will be released. So the question is: Should we go ahead and do a 4.0.3 release? It's relatively easy for me to pull in the patches and roll up a release. What I'm concerned about is distracting folks from the 4.1.0 process to take time to vote - if done correctly, the VOTE can be a time-consuming process. Thoughts? The problem with the nightly builds is that there's no signal to the larger community of "OK, seriously - we need you to start testing NOW." And presenting people with "pick any build" is a losing proposition. We need to be able to: 1) Signal that we're ready for a larger community to start testing because - while we know it's not perfect, we also need to find blockers that we don't already know about. 2) Engage folks who are less connected to the day-to-day development process and provide a well-defined process and point them at an artifact we're prepared to see a lot of bug reports against. 3) Promote the process and be ready to help a larger body of community members who will likely need guidance in filing bugs, etc. I'm indifferent to upgrades between betas or to production release. I think it's a nice to have, but I don't anticipate anyone using betas in production, or even starting a production deployment with a beta. [REMINDER] The CloudStack Conference CFP Deadline is Approaching! Submit Talks by Sunday
Are you using, supporting, or helping develop Apache CloudStack? Doing interesting work around Apache CloudStack? If so, you should be speaking at the second [1]CloudStack Collaboration Conference this June in Santa Clara. ## TL;DR The deadline for submissions is Sunday, May 12th. You can submit talks at [2]http://www.cloudstackcollab.com/CfP/. Ask questions to market...@cloudstack.apache.org or plann...@cloudstackcollab.org. The Collaboration Conference will feature tracks for users, developers, and integrators of Apache CloudStack. We're looking for presentations that provide insight into best practices in deploying and developing Apache CloudStack. This includes supporting technologies like configuration management tools, monitoring solutions, and more. This will be an outstanding opportunity for developers to collaborate, exchange ideas, and get work done face-to-face with other Apache CloudStack contributors to improve Apache CloudStack. ## Proposals The program committee will be looking for presentations and workshops related to working with and developing Apache CloudStack. This includes everything from running CloudStack at scale, best practices for working with IaaS clouds, discussions about CloudStack's architecture, proposals for feature development, and more. We're also open to talks that go hand-in-hand with managing Apache CloudStack, like configuration management and monitoring tools. In short, if it's relevant to Apache CloudStack development, deployment, and integration, we're interested in what you might have to say. For an example of what we're looking for, check out some of the [3]videos from last year's event. To submit your talk, just go to [4]http://www.cloudstackcollab.com/CfP/ and follow the steps there. ## Timeline and Deadlines There's no time like the present to submit a proposal. We recommend getting your proposal in early, and feel free to ask questions about talk ideas on market...@cloudstack.apache.org if you want tips for success! You can reach the CfP committee at plann...@cloudstackcollab.org. Dates for proposals are as follows: * Call for Proposals closes on May 12th. * Notifications will go out on May 17th. * Confirmations will be due by May 22nd. ## Travel Sponsorships Not sure if you can afford the airfare and lodging to attend the Collaboration Conference? Please don't let that stop you from submitting your best proposal. We may be making a number of travel sponsorships available for speakers who have useful information to share with the Apache CloudStack community. ## Code of Conduct The Apache CloudStack community is open to everyone. As such, we are committed to providing a friendly, safe, and welcoming environment for all - regardless of gender, sexual orientation, disability, ethnicity, or religion. We respect and encourage diversity at our conference. By agreeing to present at the conference, you are agreeing to abide by the code of conduct. We expect all speakers and attendees to have read and understood the code of conduct, and that all presentations will meet this standard. ## Questions?
