OpenOffice.org book both entertaining and educational So, this week I was
lucky enough to get my hands on a copy of Open The
Door,
an introduction to using OpenOffice.org 3.0. The book, written and published
by Translate.org.za , is a dual-language
production with both English and Afrikaans sections (each a 100 pages). The
guide is illustrated throughout with screenshots and covers the basics of
installing OpenOfffice.org on Windows and Mac OS X through to doing things
such as setting up templates, letterheads, spreadsheet formatting and
preparing presentations.

But what I really like about the book is that it is not just a dry,
technical manual on using OpenOffice.org. It's also a pretty good guide to
being more productive at work and is filled with useful links, tips on
making better documents as well as ideas on how to be more organised at
work. I also liked the tips on being a "highly evolved user".

The book is part of a package that can be bought directly from
Translate.org.za 's website and includes the
software in multiple languages as well as the book.

Well done to Dwayne and the team at Translate.org.za

*Disclaimer: I did some minor work with Translate around the book but I had
absolutely nothing to do with the writing of the book, and certainly no hand
in the localisation of OpenOffice.org.*

Hi Kobayashi-san,

the OOo Marketing Project is certainly the right place to promote OOo and
ODF, but IMHO the wrong place to organize review activities for ODF 1.2, as
this is mostly a technical affair. I would see this in the focus of the OOo
XML project (http://xml.openoffice.org/), which is in charge of implementing
ODF for OOo.

Of course, everyone is welcome to provide feedback during the public review
of ODF 1.2, at the ODF comment mailing list:
http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/tc_home.php?wg_abbrev=office#feedback

As to the missing Japanese reference books about ODF, I would think this
issue should also be addresses with OASIS, either with the ODF technical
committee or ODF Adoption TC.
http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/tc_home.php?wg_abbrev=office
http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/tc_home.php?wg_abbrev=odf-adoption

The ODF Toolkit project (http://odftoolkit.org/) might also be a good point
to work on documentation.

Sorry, that I couldn't help better.

Best regards,

What is difficulty to organize the review activity in the

BTW, There is no Japanese manual book of ODF in Japan. But also There

[marketing] Request for input for OpenOffice.org Newsletter

2010-07-01 Thread Kay Koll

 Hi,

as you may know I authoring the OO.o newsletter. The current format has
a three sections

* introduction section
* News from the Community projects
* News from the Community Council

The first section is typical static. Florian brought up the idea to
change the intro section with every newsletter.

To accomplish that, I would like to collect suggestions and input.

Here is the current introduction text:

*You can help the community, it is easy and fun!*
There are dozens of opportunities to support the community and you do
not have to be a developer to help out. Here are just two out of many
examples:

/Are you interested in marketing?/
Go ahead and help the OpenOffice.org marketing project!
Help spread the word and, by the way, it looks good in your resume.

/Do you like to write articles or short manuals?/
The documentation project is always looking for new and exciting articles.

/Don't be shy and start volunteering today!/
 Find out how to contribute
Do not miss the videos on Facebook

The other important section where I need input for is the Community
project section.
This is newsletter is an excellent vehicle to promote your project and
find new volunteers !

Here is a typical content for project section
*
Notes from the Community projects*
Presenting the Irish Gaelic Community
Each month, we will interview teams, blog about it, include it in the
OpenOffice.org, newsletter, etc. This month, we start with the Irish
native-language project, lead by Kevin Scannell. Read More »

Any feedback and suggestions are welcome

Kay

[marketing] Move OO.o Newletter to HTML - Result of the survey

2009-10-30 Thread Kay Koll

Hi,

we had asked the reader of the OO.o Newsletter in a survey which form of
the OO.o Newsletter they prefer and it turned out that almost 84% wanted
to have the newsletter in the HTML format. 2599 readers had participate.

This is a clear quorum to change the format of the newsletter to HTML.
This does not imply that readers who do not prefer HTML can not read the
newsletter anymore. I will send out the newsletter with an embedded text
version.

The October newsletter will be the first newsletter in the HTML format.

Bernard,

Only if they are subscribed to both.
Hosting two announce mailing list would imply that each of the
announcement needs to be posted to two mailing lists. A model which I
dislike

Thanks to Florian, here is my proposal for a HTML version of the newsletter.
http://marketing.openoffice.org/tryouts/newsletter/OOoHTMLNewsletter.html

and as automatically generated simple text version
http://test.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?listName=announce&msgNo=18

The result of the survey:
http://surveys.services.openoffice.org/surveys/index.php?sid=88144&lang=en
Just 8 people have responded yet
4 voted for HTML and 4 for text version

So the results of survey are not very helpful

Using two mailing lists
would imply that users on the HTML announce list receive the newsletter
twice. The HTML version and the text version through the normal
announce@ list.

Only if they are subscribed to both. If we send the release
information to announce_h...@ooo too, there is no necessity to
subscribe to annou...@ooo and announce_h...@ooo simultaneously.

But as Christine Beems and Zhang Weiwu mention: We have to find out

Sorry, I don't get your point:

At the moment everybody interested in the newsletter has to subscribe
to annou...@ooo.

If you were able to create both versions of the newsletter, people
interested in the HTML version would subscribe to announce_h...@ooo
while others stay with annou...@ooo if they want to receive text mails
only.

I don't know how much work it is to create both versions and send them
to the lists. Perhaps the mail server could do the discrimination: If
HTML code would be stripped from the mails to annou...@ooo while this
would be allowed for announce_h...@ooo, you could send a mail
containing both parts to both lists simultaneously.

Lars,

I had created the prototype mid of August and had used content from the

The newsletter archive nor the marketing list does not accept HTML

So I thought it would not be necessary to create it twice.

Hi all,

for me the question about HTML or txt is not a question of
preferences, but of target audience:

OOo project members getting dozens to hundreds of text mails will not
be interested in bloated HTML mails, but still want to be informed
about what is going on outside their specific projects.

Other people that want to be informed about the project from the
outside will be divided in two categories:

Some want to get plain text mails: Full information with the minimum
of download/storage space.

Others are interested in eye-catching well designed HTML newsletters.
I think this group is growing more and more:
- Users that just want to hear a bit more about OOo that they already
know.
- People just reached by our marketing efforts: A bit curious, but not
really interested.

- Internet lurkers appealed by our lovely homepage...

IMHO there is only one way to do our work properly:
- keep the text format on the announce mailing list
*plus*
- create a new list (or anything else) for HTML newsletters.

It should be the user's choice if they want to get HTML or txt, as Kay
already mentioned, creation of both is not much more work than just one.

Or just plain wrong. That's a third option. If those people had been
given IT support that could provide them with a web page to publish
their material on, there would be no temptation to use e-mail as a
surrogate for a file system, which is what the proposal at hand really
boils down to. ( Again, assuming it's not just trolling for the sake of
trolling. )

Newsletter gets a web page, news letter is published as a web page, the
URL is sent to the mailing list with a plain text version underneath.

Accessible by all. Works on all systems. Or maybe those are two of the
"problems" the proposal wishes to address.

[marketing] Survey: Should be the OO.o Newsletter in HTML or simple text

2009-09-04 Thread Kay Koll

Hi,

the current newsletter is more a press review but having an editorial
part would definitely improve the newsletter.
This would imply that we need a team which writes and reviews the
articles. Regarding images and screenshots, they are fine for magazines
but a newsletter should be slim as possible.

The marketing alias does not accept HTML emails, so I am not able to
send my proposal to this alias and I do not have a publicly access web
page available. If somebody has a page available, I will be happy to
send him my proposal.

However we have setup a survey where everyone express their opinion
regarding HTML and simple text.

http://surveys.services.openoffice.org/surveys/index.php?sid=88144&lang=en

Here is a pointer to the simple text version of the newsletter.

I have mixed feelings about this idea, for example my browser crashed
when I tried to open the second link. Granted I am on a low resource
EEEPC but usually newsletters are for content and not much shine thats
why we preffer text NL than HTML NL.
However i do remember a proposal by a polish magazine about creating
an OpenOffice.org magazine, the concept fade away but having the
resource to come up wiht an OOo E-zine like the Mozilal E-Zine, Ubuntu
E-Zine (Fullcircle), and even a REd Hat E-zine too
(http://magazine.redhat.com/).

I am curious to know what this e-zine put in and how come they can
come up with so much content. But if there are the team dedicated to
bring this through I am all forward.

Hi all,
I wonder who the target audience for the newsletter is. Is it the community,
the press or even a third group?

Honestly, I find the newsletter boring. The text based form is fine inside
the community, but if the target is to reach new users or the press I think
it needs to be shined up. People are expecting some more marketing like.
Some glitter and gold. The fine stories could be wrapped up in some nicer
paper I think.

Please don't take this as anything other than positive critics. A proposal
for future work. I read the newsletter every months and I think that the
journalistic and editorial work is fine.

Please have a look at the Danish newsletter. This is how it looked about one
year ago: http://da.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=nyhedsbrev&msgNo=53

And then see the latest issue:
http://issuu.com/lodahl/docs/2009september?viewMode=magazine&mode=embed

Okay, I don't expect that you can understand the content but different
layout should be understandable.

Please discuss this in the future. We could call it 'Newsletter
Renaissance'.

The newly approved standard means that DTS will provide support for
Open Office as well as Microsoft Office suite. Agencies are encouraged to
select productivity software that meets their business and cost
requirements.

I looked at issues between 158 and 176 (the current), and couldn't find
any other references to Open Office, so I'm inclined to say that, if this
is
the protocol within the directorate's office, it's probably unofficial
-- and possibly
even an impromptu pilot project.

In the meantime, however, I found the following:

http://kevin.watson.name/research/openoffice.html -- Comparing
OpenOffice 1.0 to MS Office 2000

OpenOffice.org software was put to the test in an academic
environment. This paper examined how the newly released software stood
up to the test of newspaper and technology columnists and how it stood
up to the rigorous testing in the English Department at Utah State
University in Logan, Utah.

The question that was answered is thus: In general, is OpenOffice.org
a viable alternative to Microsoft Office 2000 in an academic
environment? The answer turned out to be yes. OpenOffice.org software
stood up to nearly all of the requirements of teaching faculty and
staff in the department. There were a few who disliked using
OpenOffice.org software, but the same people also find Microsoft
Office clumsy and unusable.

Re: [marketing] Moving the OO.o Newsletter to HTML

2009-08-18 Thread Kay Koll

Graham,

HTML Newsletters are better readable due to the extended formatting
capabilities. You can play with colors, multi columns and so on.
It is definitely a better user experience.

I have prepared a test Newsletter in HTML which also includes the
content in plain text (thanks to Alex). The plain text version is well
readable.
This might be a model which most of the worries. I am going to send it
out in a separate email.

By the way the final newsletter will include four images (header,
unsubscribe, spread the news, Sun logo)

Any comments are welcome

Hi Kay,

I'm with Christine, she speaks good sense. However we seem to have a slight
language misunderstanding.

The OOo newsletter is not "a marketplace", but our means of communication
to "_the_ marketplace" and the Non-techie business people part of that
Marketplace deals with text better than HTML.

A well formatted text email is much better in the eyes of those end users than
something that is likely to get trashed by mail filters or frustrate the
reader. Text reads consistently, whereas HTML is at the mercy of the enduser
browser settings.

+1 unfortunately this list strips attachments

Also consider that a substantial number of the 'professional end

providing a legitimate service to the clients we seek to serve.

It has been noted in the past that in terms our demographics, Non-techie

In this light consider that what these professionals greatly value is
'consistency'. We (all of us) have a job to do and we want to do it

And finally, it might be worth considering that html formatting raises
one's 'score' with the spam-gods, which can raise a newsletter's

Thus in terms of newsletter design I would suggest continuing to
distribute in (creatively formatted) plain text but also offering a
link to a nicely formatted PDF version and/or a link to a webpage
where the html formatted version (optimally with photos/graphics) is
posted.

Anyway, all just my opinion and perhaps not of any use...??? In any
event, I am enjoying using OpenOffice because (so far at least) the

[marketing] Mozilla Thunderbird cross promotion

Hi,

I would like to continue the cross promotions and adding a pointer to
the Mozilla Thunderbird download on

'Thank You for downloading'
   http://update.services.openoffice.org/ooo/index.html?cid=920897

'Thank you registering'
http://registration.services.openoffice.org/OOo3.0Beta/thankyou.html

I know that Florian was not happy about it, but it is best location for
a promotion.

Please have in mind that many OO.o users still thinking that an Office
suite has to include email client and TB is due the platform
independence the perfect email client for OO.o.

Hello Florian,

Florian Effenberger wrote:

No draft available yet but we should start soon.

* Mentioned on the OO.o product page (with real live example)
Each section get extend by just a single sentence.
  * Why OpenOffice.org

Both sound okay to me. We never did this before, but I'm willing to
give this a try. We should look that it doesn't clutter the page, but
basically, I see benefits in that, so let's go! :-)

I will come back with a proposal soon

* Adding TB+LG on the thank you pages
  * OO.o 3.0 thank you page

AI: KK

  * Registration thank you page

http://registration.services.openoffice.org/OOo3.0Beta/thankyou.html

AI: KK

Hmmm... where do you want to put it there? We already have
complimentary products and solutions listed, and I want to avoid
cluttering the pages. But, another idea, maybe we can add it to the
extensions repository, even if it is no "real" extension?
A PIM client is considered as an integrated part of a Office suite be
many users, by using this page we address these demands and if we are
removing the first 'Download' link, which is due the new OO.o page not
necessary anymore, we have the space. Beside that we should use the
Extension Repository for OO.o Extensions only

* OpenOffice.org Solutions page

Definitely a good idea!

* English FAQ
-> Update Outlook related FAQ questions

+1

* FAQ pages from other locals
 AI: ?

If we agree on mentioning Lightning in the 3.0 PR, I'll of course use
it in the Germanophone PR as well. We might also modify our local
product pages accordingly.

Excellent !

2008-09-05 Thread Kay Koll

Hi,

We saw a start on [EMAIL PROTECTED] for a banner that can be used
together with the announcement on the Thunderbird/Lightning website,
just as we expect some materials from Mozilla.
Alexandro and Luke Jones were already making a start, but I asked
something about the wording, the message. And to pick up this
subject: what do we think of:

a - OpenOffice.org recommends Mozilla Thunderbird / Lightning

b - OpenOffice.org recommends using Mozilla Thunderbird as an Outlook
replacement

c - OpenOffice.org & Mozilla Thunderbird / Lightning

d - (better ideas),

Ciao,

Cor

I will go for a but I will also add 'Messaging' or E-Mail (second is
more understandable).

I have checked the structure of the Mozilla.com web site and they did
not use banners nor have rooms to add one but it would be good to have a
banner for other location. Without being on the Mozilla page, we need
to describe what TB does.

* OpenOffice.org recommends Mozilla Thunderbird / Lightning for your emails

Beside that in my opinion the TB Feature page is the best location for
adding OO.o

http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/thunderbird/features.html

My first proposal (Based on the current page structure)

Office Productivity
OpenOffice.org s the leading open-source office software suite for word
processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more

or

Office Productivity
Are you looking for a full featured Open Source Office suite ?
OpenOffice.org is your choice, tens of million users already using it
all other the world

[marketing] Meeting Minutes - Mozilla Thunderbird + Lightning promotion on OO.o

2008-08-25 Thread Kay Koll

Telephone conference, August 25th 2008: 15:00 - 15:30

Participants: Rafael Ebron - Marketing lead Mozilla Messaging
Cor Nouws - OpenOffice.org Markting project
Alexandro Colorado - OpenOffice.org Markting project
Kay Koll - Host and OpenOffice.org Markting project

Subject: Thunderbird+Lightning and OpenOffice.org cross promotion
 activities

This minutes based on Cor's and my notes. Feel free to report any
inaccuracies.

Introduction by Kay why it is important to do a cross promotion.
Users expecting a Mail/Calendaring solution as part of an Office suite
because of the Outlook client within the Microsoft Office suite.
The idea is to have at least have a recommendation: have a look on
Mozilla, that offers functionality you are looking for.

No plans for a bundling yet, it requires (deeper discussing)
There are too many pro and cons. It help unexperienced users only,
experienced might hate this

Rafael asked for OO.o web statistic
Kay provided following for July 2008
  * 33M page hits of openoffice.org
  * 11.6 M downloads in July
  * 40K filled out the survey
Cour provided the numbers for the Netherlands
  * Daily downloads: 2500-3500
Rafael asked for the OO.o schedule
Kay: Launch currently scheduled for September 16th. There might be
delays because of testing, translation

Rafael was happy with proposal now but just needs implementation time.
* what spots are needed? logo's language
* He can send info downloads in separate mail
* Thunderbird 3 roadmap
  * beta 1 in September
  * beta 2 in October
  * final January
Thunderbird 3 will integrate Lightning the project name Lightning may
disappear

They are revamping Mozilla TB website until TB3 Beta 2, end of October

Kay: We have to use the Thunderbird release which is available in Sept.
which is TB 2.0.0.16 + Lightning 0.9. No integrated setup available of
TB +Lightning. Provided in two separate downloads

Kay: We have identify the best locations on OO.o for a promotion
* Product Page
* Download Page (Needs to be discussed but the importance had decreased
due to automatic download)

Rafael suggested to add a pointer to the 'Thanks for downloading page'

Rafael could add OO.o promotion on the Thunderbird page.

Yes, this would be possible. Due to conflict which showed up today
I could do 19:00 CET / 10PST.
If this is too late/early please shout, we may find a more
convenient time/day.

Everyone who wanted to attend, drop me a short note to send them
the dial in information. (It has toll free numbers for many
European countries and USA)

Monday next week would work for me

I've read this thread and like the positive attitude and nice chances.

Yes, this is correct but TB 3.0 is scheduled for begin of 2009. I wanted
to start with the promotion sooner and updating it when TB 3.0 is available.
There will be a lot of noise in the press when 3.0 showed up, The plan

Re: [marketing] Mozilla Thunderbird + Lightning promotion on OO.o

2008-08-15 Thread Kay Koll

Hi,

The OO.o and Lightning release date went closer.
I am in contact with Rafael Ebron Mozilla's international marketing he
is also interested in cross promoting OO.o.

Following initiatives was not rejected in my first mailing end of June
* Announced in the OpenOffice.org Newsletter
* Announcement on news.openoffice.org along with the 3.0 announcement
* Mentioned on the OO.o product/features page (with real live example)
* OpenOffice.org Solutions page

Not finally discussed where a promotion link on download.openoffice.org

It is safe to say that an integration or bundling with OO.o is not planned.

Is this summary correct so far?
Nether mind I would link re-initiate the discussion about promoting
Thunderbird +Lightning on the download page of OO.o, which is in my
opinion the most prominent place for a promotion.

We might start also a discussion how OO.o could be promoted by the
Mozilla Thunderbird team. Adding an OpenOffice.org pointer on the
Thunderbird page might be an option.

Finally we could arrange a telephone conference to discuss the basics

Regards

Kay

are there also plans to bundle or at least link to it from OOo 3?
Maybe at the end of the setup? I don't know if we should go this far,
as we never did that before with other products out of good reasons -
however, this doesn't prevent us from linking to it prominently from
our website.

I am in contact with David Ascher (CEO Mozilla MailCo) and with the
Mozilla Thunderbird engineering. They like the idea for a cross
promotion, so we should get the backing from MailCo, too.

That's great!

* Announcement on news.openoffice.org along with the 3.0 announcement

+1

+1, maybe with some real-life examples.

* OpenOffice.org Solutions page

+1

* Promotions by local OO.o Markting Projects on the local OO.o pages,
Tradeshows and Conferences

I'd leave that up to the local MarCons, but we can at least provide
them with material. For my area (Germany), I'd definitely go for it.
In fact, on trade shows, we already advertise the combination of
TB+Lightning+OOo.

* Download link on download.openoffice.org

Same problem as above - we never went this far before. I personally
don't have a problem with it, but I'd like to hear other's opinions as
well.

Florian, I know Jane, I can ring her if you want or we can organize a
confcall with you. Would you like to do this?

I know Jane as well, we chat every now and then. ;-) A ConfCall would
be a good idea. I'm not available until July, so let's wait what
others think and then we maybe could arrange a ConfCall with some OOo
people and some from Mozilla to do some brainstorming?

Re: [marketing] Mozilla Thunderbird + Lightning promotion on OO.o

2008-06-24 Thread Kay Koll

Hi Florian,

+1. Do you know the timeframe when the calendaring component will be
integrated into Thunderbird? Will it be (timely) ready for OOo 3.0, or
will it take longer, i.e. can we promote this together?
This is the plan, there will be a Lightning version available, the same
as we plan to bundle with StarOffice.

Do you know if then it already has some links to OOo? I know that
there have been features planned to integrate parts into OOo, but I'm
not aware on how developed they are yet. Maybe Christian Jansen knows
more?
No links or Lightning specific features available yet but OO.o is the
preferred Office suite any feature which requires an integration in an
Office suite will be integrated with OO.o first. A shared setup or
installation packages is currently not planned.
Do you already have concrete ideas? I have a good contact to Jane
Finette, European Marketing Director at Mozilla, so I can give her a
call if we have some rough ideas.
I am in contact with David Ascher (CEO Mozilla MailCo) and with the
Mozilla Thunderbird engineering. They like the idea for a cross
promotion, so we should get the backing from MailCo, too.

Here are a couple of ideas :
* Announcement on news.openoffice.org along with the 3.0 announcement
* Announced in Erwin's (Kay) OpenOffice.org Newsletter
* Mentioned on the OO.o product/features page
* OpenOffice.org Solutions page
* Promotions by local OO.o Markting Projects on the local OO.o pages,
Tradeshows and Conferences

* Download link on download.openoffice.org

[marketing] Mozilla Thunderbird + Lightning promotion on OO.o

2008-06-24 Thread Kay Koll

Hi,

you might have heard that the Mozilla Community is working on a
Calendering Add-In for the Mozilla email client. The calendaring
extension is currently implemented as a Mozilla Thunderbird Add-In but
it will get integrated part of the Thunderbird application.
We will have then a full featured and mature email/calendaring solution,
even server based calendaring is possible.

Due to the bundling of Microsoft Outlook with Microsoft Office, many
customers asking for an Outlook equivalent for OO.o.

Mozilla Thunderbird has several advantages :
* Supports the same set of platforms
* Based on the popular Mozilla Framework
* Mozilla Thunderbird is one of the most popular open source email client

In my opinion we should promote solution packages, because this is
exactly what the competition does and this is what companies expecting.

Re: [Marketing] Developer oriented Flyer

2007-11-21 Thread Kay Koll

Alexandro,

You are totally right, .NET is not the only way to connect to OO.o but
.NET is much easier to use as OLE/COM due to the fact that it is a
language binding instead of the bridge. Using OLE/COM bridge is not that
easy and the code looks a bit ugly but you can compare the .NET language
binding with the C++ or Java binding.
You had used the term CLI in your original version, which is the
underlining byte code language of .NET. The term .NET is better known as
CLI. Please do not mix up CLI and OLE/COM both technologies have almost
nothing to do with each other.

Kay

I check your document and just to clarify something. To connect UNO with
OLE and COM you don't necesarily need .NET. Accordin to this post you
can make conections with UNO through com using Delphi, Python, C, C++,
