[digitalradio] Re: New

2010-08-29 Thread Jerry W
Dan,

Although the TH-F6A has a Packet modem, that is not all you need to
operate APRS with that HT. You will also need a computer, laptop if
operating portable or mobile connected to the TH-F6A, see page 45 of the
operating manual for cables ect. Then you would need a TNC that would
connect with the GPS unit or manually enter in lat - long locations
though software (see UI-View: http://www.ui-view.org/) that the TNC can
send to the TH-F6A. You may want to look for a used Kenwood TH-D7A/G
that has APRS as one of the built in features. There is supposed to be a
new Kenwood HT, Kenwood TH-D72? with built-in APRS and GPS, however no
release date as to when the new HT will be available. You might watch
the TH-D7 Yahoo group for more information:

[digitalradio] A little off topic, Sputnik, Mercury - Atlas

2007-10-01 Thread Jerry W
For all you "old timers"

The 50th anniversary of Sputnik is coming up on October 6, 2007. There
are a lot of posts on the web and blogs, one web site being:
www.arrl.org about Sputnik.

Copied Sputnik on my Hallcafters S-38 E just before I went to radio
school at Keesler AFB. At Keesler they had a tracking antenna that was
configured like a Yagi, it was laid out on the ground for satellite
tracking.

Does any know the HF frequency that was used by the first
Mercury-Atlas missions? Was working at KSTP Television as a radio
dispatcher for news and photo crews on the first few Mercury-Atlas
missions. One of the engineers found the frequency and went to the
engineering lab to listen. Then the second Mercury mission copied the
down link some where on HF with my Hallcafters SX-99 receiver.

pcooke2002,

Try this site: http://home.teleport.com/~nb6z/about.htm
A lot of those modes are not used very much. PSK31, RTTY and Olivia
are being used quite often.

The most "popular" mode is PSK31, I call it "point and click QSO".It
uses the sound card to decode and transmit very narrow audio tones.
Easy software to set up PSK31 is: http://www.digipan.net/

On HT's yes as one needs access to the PTT function for one and maybe
making your own audio cables. The Kenwood TH-D7A[G] has a built in
TNC and it is limited, but with a Terminal program in the "KISS" mode
it can be used as a Packet transceiver and also has built in APRS mode.

Brent,

ARRL has some information on RFI/EMI, in fact they have a handbook for
sale on the subject:
http://www.arrl.org/catalog/6834/

Couple of things to try, it may be the monitor radiating. Reorientate
the monitor if possible so the screen faces away from the rig, or
move the monitor around to find a "quiet spot" on the operating desk.
Change the refresh rate to a different frequency by right click on
desktop, Properties, Settings, Advanced, Monitor and change the
frequecy and see if that changes the RFI, it may move on a different
part of the band but at least it may be "quiet" where you are working
on a band.

2007-01-06 Thread Jerry W
First PSK31 contact was:
March 8, 2001, 14070 with Jerry - W8GND DigiPan.

Prior to that I had been away from ham radio for over 10 years. 1960's
and 70's operated quite a lot of RTTY with the old Model 19 Teletype
set. Found PSK31 very much like RTTY and these new "buttons" called
"macros", HI. Had not joined the ARRL until June 2001, so had no idea
about PSK31 or other modes that were created since the 70's. Found a
RTTY program called "BTU" for the sound card. Called "CQ" for many
days around 14.080 on RTTY. Finally some one answered, I asked where
all the RTTY ops were hanging out and that I had been off the air for
ten years. He told me about PSK31 and DigiPan and to look around
"070" on most of the HF bands for PSK31. Downloaded DigiPan, did a
search on PSK31, read as much as I could about this new mode, how to
build a interface between computer and radio and tips on keeping audio
levels down so that no interference was created on transmit. After the
contact with Jerry - W8GND I was "hooked" on PSK31. Most of my
operating is on PSK31, but have tried most of the other "digital"
modes at one time or another.

"that many of the new entrants do not have that zeal or desire to put

That is about it in a nutshell. Most techs buy a two meter FM radio.
You hear them on the local repeaters for maybe a month or so and then
disappear into the woodwork. After that investment, are they going to

With 100 watts and a good beam, it should be easy to work a similar
station from my QTH to the Twin Cities (~ 150 miles). You would think
that since there are so many no code technician hams, who can not do
long range HF, that they would want to do this on 6 and 2 meters at
least. But I have come to the conclusion that by making the licenses
easier to get (much, much easier to get), that many of the new
entrants do not have that zeal or desire to put resources into such
activities.

[digitalradio] Re: Don't ignore proposals/local HF net successes

2006-10-25 Thread Jerry W
I think there are to many other activities for hams now, and hams
don't get on the air much as in the past. Maybe complacency?

There are thirty six two meter repeaters listed in on the Repeater
Directory in the twin city area of Minnesota. Out of those, maybe
four are somewhat active. The others may have a net one night a week
and then the repeater pretty much is vacant of users the rest of the
week. Drive time use has fallen off for the same reason that cell
phone use is discouraged in the car. Traffic is very heavy and one
needs to concentrate on their driving.

The clubs who have a weekly net on their repeater, do not get a lot of
stations checking into the net in respect to membership. Some have
ten meter and fifteen meter SSB and also CW net on fifteen meters
where Tech Plus can check in. Very few that check in.

There are nets on Sunday night for SSB on Six, Two, 220 and 70 cm here
around the twin city area. Maybe lucky if they get ten stations to
check in on Six meters and then most of those stations will also check
into the two meter net. On 220, maybe three or four stations at most
check in, some weeks no one answers the call for check in. 70 cm
maybe four or five check in. Weekdays there is very little activity
on SSB.

We have had a SSTV net for almost ten years on two meter FM simplex
145.500. At times there were ten stations checking in. Part of the
reason was testing Don's K0HEO WinPix Pro and WinPix 32 beta software
as he lived in the twin city area. Since Don passed on so have users.
The check in was down to maybe three stations on net night. Email was
sent out to local clubs informing them of the SSTV net. So far we
have had about four new stations check in, for how long, who knows?

Try to get hams to help with bike marathons or running marathons to
help with relief stations along the way, you almost have to grab hams
by the collar and force them to volunteer.

The Minnesota Senior Net (CW) is still looking for a permanent net
control, no one has volunteered. CW traffic handling a thing of the past?

So what is the answer? You can beg plead with other hams until your
horse and won't do any good.

My .02 cents, YMMV.

Just so you know, I certainly would never support any wide band modes
beyond what we now have on 6 meters or 2 meters. And that includes SS
techniques which destroy the noise floor over too wide an area. However,
I would like to see 6 meters used a LOT more than it is. It is
frustrating to me that after all these years, with many, many, more
hams with Technician Class Licenses, and with all the new amazing rigs
with 6 and sometimes even 2 and 440 SSB added on, very few hams are
working these bands for "local" contacts. The equipment (the really
pathetic equipment) I had in 1964 to work 6 meters (and could never
get it to work) is a far cry from what we have now and yet you just do
not find many operators. I call every so often on 52.525 FM and 50.125
SSB with almost no contacts. Sure, when the band opens up, you can
then work many stations. I know that there are very weak signal modes
such as some rare EME work and more common meteor shower work so you
don't want to jeopardize those areas.

By the way, since I moved about 30-40 miles away from my former QTH

have tried many different HF frequencies to see what works the best
for voice. We initially started on 28.400 for the last year or two but
the reason for selecting 10 meter phone was so that the Tech + and
Novices could be part of the group. Guess what? At no time have we
ever had any of them come to the well publicized net. So recently we
have been trying other bands, and 80 tends to go long and you get too
many distant stations wanting to contact us, 40 and 20 are outside the
NVIS range and have a weaker ground wave. Unfortunately same for 6
meters:( We thought that might work OK for direct/skywave, but very
mediocre results with our mediocre antennas.

The bands that really work the best are:

160 if the other stations are willing to install an antenna ... and ...
15 meters was the best "ground"/direct wave of all the bands we tried.
Even with Butternut and R7 type verticals. I still can not quite
figure out the reason.

MixW can open "secondary" or "child" windows by right click on the
signal of interest. As long as you leave these open (even minimized)
you can go back and read what was sent. I think you can open about a
twelve secondary windows at once. Even a different mode by right
clicking in the open secondary window and selecting the new mode while
copying another mode on the main. I have many times seen MFSK16 right
above the PSK area on twenty meters and have been able to copy MFSK in
a secondary window while copying PSK in the main window.

[digitalradio] Re: HF Digital Voice

2006-10-03 Thread Jerry W
Does Digital Voice files work the same as the image files that are
sent on 14.233? In other words one needs a good solid signal in order
to copy and decode the Digital Voice files? The way 20 meters has
been at my QTH most of the summer, I would still be trying to decode
the first Digital Voice file, HI. Have only copied two or three image
files using HamPal, all others I get to many errors and don't want to
spend half a day trying for good fills.

[digitalradio] Re: Upper Sideband as International Standard

2006-09-23 Thread Jerry W
Mark,

Good references.

I had the pleasure of meeting Byron Kretzman, W2JTP while he was
working for the State of Minnesota, Highway Department, Electronic
Communications division. I have his RTTY handbook autographed by him.
He came to the RATS club which met over in Minneapolis. I built the
Twin City TU that Byron published in CQ magazine which he desinged
while working here in the twin cities. I could not make it work so a
ham who was active on RTTY had me bring it to his shack, W0HKF. I had
installed this new device called a diode backwards. A 1N34 first
solid state device I had seen. Did not know which direction the "bar"
end went according to the schematic. Had a lot of fun with the Twin
City TU and the old model 19 Teletype set. The last TU I built was
the DT-600, all solid state using Op-Amps. Think it was in Ham Radio
Magazine?

By the way there is a discussion on
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/linuxham/
on this very same subject "which way is up?". W1HKJ, Dave is
developing fldigi for Linux a multi mode sound card ham application.

[digitalradio] Re: Don't hear much clamor about, Chirp, DominoEx, MFSK16 anymore!

2006-09-21 Thread Jerry W
John,

On DominoEX yes, have had a couple of QSO's on that mode, works about
the same as MFSK16 toggled back and forth between those with same
results. PAX2 monitored a QSO on 30 meters, it was way to slow, I
don't feel it is a viable keyboard mode. Maybe for HF APRS in which I
thought was the original intent of PAX2?

Most of the time I am on PSK31 on twenty meters 14.071 about.

[digitalradio] Re: Is thre a digital radio group, reflector, etc. somewhere?

2006-06-24 Thread Jerry W
Johnnie,

Will be more than happy to help. Most popular digital mode is PSK31
using software and sound card such as DigiPan:
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/hteller/digipan/

Have been on PSK31 since 2001, an old CW op myself, and a lot of PSK
users are also old CW ops, so you will find others like you self
there. Twenty meters seems to be the most popular band around 14.071.
Of course one has Field Day going on this weekend, you will see very
short exchanges, but this is not how PSK31 is normally run. PSK
exhcanges are pretty much like CW. First go around, Name, QTH, signal
report is the norm. You make "macros" for the "buttons" and this
makes for easy sending of information.

Feel free to contact me for any thing else you need to know.

Craig,

Might check Saturday mornings, they are trying to start a PSK31 net on
10.137 at 15:00 UTC.

Most of the sound card modes hang out between 10.137 to 10.140 because
of the PACTOR QRM above 10.140.

Have had a few PSK31, MFSK, Olivia and one DominoEX QSO's on 30
meters.  Late afternoon seems to be the best time for me on that band.

But go to this web site, click on the mode links, then click on the

of what the modes look and sound like.  You will need a mp3 player,

[digitalradio] Interesting - A Soundcard in Your Cable?

2006-04-26 Thread Jerry W

>From PC Magazine: http://news.yahoo.com/s/zd/20060426/tc_zd/176736

"Michael Kobrin - PC Magazine Wed Apr 26, 8:16 AM ET

A company called SoundTech is looking to simplify the process of
hooking your electric musical instrument up to your computer for
digital recording. With the introduction of the LightSnake USB, dubbed
a soundcard in a cable, SoundTech effectively eliminates the need for
a dedicated external USB audio interface. The USB end of the cable has
an embedded digital-to-analog converter and preamplifier, as well as a
light that flickers when the device is passing a signal, while the
other end terminates in a gold-plated quarter-inch instrument plug.
This lets guitarists, bassists, and keyboardists plug one end into
their instruments and the other directly into their computers (Mac or
PC, no drivers needed) without going through an amplifier and audio
interface. The 10-foot shielded cable also ships with a quarter-inch
to eighth-inch adapter and a quarter-inch male to dual-quarter-inch
female splitter.

The LightSnake USB is currently available at major online musical
instrument retailers for $69.99 (USD) list and is the first of a whole
family of products geared toward making digital recording less of a
mess of cables and devices."

Could something like this be adapted to ham radio sound card modes?

[digitalradio] Re: A few basic questions

Lynn,
Here is a web site which has answers to most of your questions, mainly
what the signals look like on the waterfall:
http://f1ult.free.fr/DIGIMODES/MULTIPSK/digimodesF6CTE_en.htm

--- In digitalradio@yahoogroups.com, "lynnmonsanto" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:

 Hi all,

 I have a few basic "getting started" questions. I have a FT-897D
hooked up to a Rigblaster Pro and my Acer laptop. I'm running MixW
and think I have things configured pretty well, since I've been able
to receive small bits of readible RTTY transmissions on 40 meters.

 1. How do you tell which mode to select in MixW when you see a signal
in the MixW waterfall? Do you just learn the visual signatures and
choose the appropriate mode?  If so, is there a file someplace that
describes the visual signature for each mode?

See: http://f1ult.free.fr/DIGIMODES/MULTIPSK/digimodesF6CTE_en.htm

 2. Olivia has a couple common formats: Olivia 500/16 and Olivia
1000/32.  How do know which format to use when listening? There are
some established Olivia frequencies. Do you just check the
frequencies occasionally to see if anyone is calling CQ?  Is there a
better strategy?

There are a couple of digital mode "clusters" where post are made to
frequency and operating mode, one is: http://data.w6rk.com/
But more often than not check the frequencies every so often.
If the bandwidth is 1000 Hz, most likely 32 tones, if the bandwidth is
500 Hz, most likely 8 tones.

 3. Finally, I just see a lot of garbage characters when I click in
the middle of (what appears to be) a couple RTTY vertical lines in the
waterfall. Maybe I should be using a software package with fewer
options than MixW.  All the options are a bit confusing.

You may have clicked in between two PSK31 signals?
Press the "AFC" button at the bottom of the MixW screen and that will
help tune in the signals.

Stick with MixW once you learn it, you will see it is the best
soundcard software out and has a lot more features than any other
software.  MixW has a group on Yahoo, can always post questions there too.

 Thanks and 73!

2006-04-23 Thread Jerry W

I used PSK31, Olivia 8/500, Feld Hell on 20 and 30 meters yesterday
April 22, 2006.  I think I may have chose the wrong day, conditions
were very bad here on  20 meters.  I called CQ at various times on the
three modes, not one answer.  Even tried to contact a station in AZ
who usually is 599 here, his signal was to weak to copy.

On 30 meters late aftenoon April 22, 2006 I made one Olivia 8/500
contact with a station in Springfield, OH.  He was calling CQ and I
called him back we had a ten minute QSO that was pretty solid until
the end and the band or popagation fell apart between us.  I tried
later on the three modes calling CQ on 30 meters, no answers.

20 meters seems to be in better shape today April 23, 2006.  Have had
one PSK31 contact with a station in PA, most of that was solid copy.

Hi Michael,

If you can get your hands on some old RTTY Handbooks one is "The New
RTTY Handbook" published in 1962 by CQ magazine, author Byron H.
Kretzman W2JTP there is a design by W6CQK for A complete Hetrodyne
Exciter designed especially for RTTY. Wayne Green and Byron Kretzman
published the "RTTY Handbook" and then Wayne Green and 73 Magazine
published a RTTY Handbook also. ARRL had RTTY and other special modes
AARV, ATV, FAX and others in a handbook called Specialized
Communications I think.

[digitalradio] Re: FSK the old way

2006-04-10 Thread Jerry W
Michael,

The most simple way was to use a diode and variable capcitor in the
VFO tank circuit connected to the Teletype Keyboard contacts. Some
noise filtering with RF chokes and capcitor were used to keep the
keying spikes down. Some used a "Polar Relay" in a 60 millamp "loop"
in turn keying the diode/capacitor in the VFO tank. One had to use
other hams to advise how far your shift was off and adjust
accordingly. The standard went from 850 Hz shift to 170 Hz shift,
with the later being easier to achive.

AM was only allowed on two meters and above for "AFSK". It still may
be that way. Hams built audio oscillators for operating on two meter
AM and later two meter FM. When SSB transmitters had good carrier
suppresion, then hams were allowed to use audio for RTTY on HF.

One who was quite active in the old RTTY days was Wayne Green, of 73
magazine. He and a few other hams went to the FCC to modernize FSK
for hams. Early "RTTY" was on and off keying, no shift, can you
imagine how good that was, HI.

Take a look at this site: http://www.rtty.com/ Has a lot of info on
RTTY operation. Look at the "History" quite interesting reading.

I used a Johnson Viking II with Johnson VFO for RTTY back in the 60's.
Ran the filments on the VFO 24/7 in order to keep the drift down when
I wanted to operate RTTY.

It could have been RTTY on a contest weekend(April 1st and 2nd?), the
transmissions are very short. If you have RTTY decoding software that
has "AFC", enable that, you might decode some of the transmissions.

[digitalradio] Re: UI-View world map

2006-03-28 Thread Jerry W
John,

I downloaded UI-View about five years ago, the world map came with the
install files I think.

If you go to: http://www.ui-view.org/#maps_for_ui-view
and "Maps of Canada, USA, Europe, Asia and around the world - by Jack
VE3UPH", he has all kinds of maps for download including "World" &
"USA" etc, you do not need the special map software that is on the
UI-View site.

You need to go from the UI-View site to VE3UPH site, you should not
need a password by going that route.

John,

Open UI-View, then on the very top line there is "Map", click on that.
Then "Load A Map" button and a drop down menu should show and then
select " The World view in color", then OK.

On the extra maps go to the UI-View web site: http://www.ui-view.org/
Then click on "Maps". Then "Maps of Canada, USA, Europe, Asia and
around the world - by Jack VE3UPH" then "USA" folder.

[digitalradio] Icom - new radio add in QST

2006-02-24 Thread Jerry W
In QST March 2006, pages 129 to 136 Icom is promoting their new
radios. The ad starts on page 129 with a Vulture sitting on a
tombstone (R.I.P.) and titled "Some say this is the future of amateur
radio." (Scare tactics?)

The Icom IC-7000 looks like a remake of the IC-706 series, it might sell?

The PRC1500 receiver looks interesting with either remote head or PC
interface.

The D-STAR series, 1.2 GHz voice repeater, 1.2 GHz data repeater, 2
meter digital voice repeater, 70 cm digital voice repeater. Of course
one would also need new mobile transcievers to work with D-STAR
repeaters. That could be quite an expensive undertaking. I wonder how
many clubs and individuals will be considering converting over to
D-STAR? Soon or will it take some years to fully implement or will
this die due to cost of purchasing new repeaters and radios?

Have heard of one local club considering D-STAR but they would also
like to keep the current two meter and 70 cm FM repeaters going for
some years which are in need of replacement. A large amount of funds
would be needed to implement both. There are 32 two meter repeaters
listed for the twin city Minnesota area. Not very many are actively
used. Some repeater clubs also have 70 cm repeaters, very rare that
any one of those are used. Think the 3M club has a 1.2 GHz repeater,
but do not know of very many users. There are about four 220 repeaters
that I hear. I have called and called on them, I can "kerchunk" them
but no one comes back to me, never hear anything other than the CW ID
on them, why are they there?

Then localy Radio City, Inc. has WIRES-II with a Yaesu radio set up
going in the store. So that would mean one would need another new
radio besides D-STAR. Is the WIRES-II new mode going to be a success?
Or will it die due to cost of purchasing new radios?

Two meter, 70 cm and 220 FM mobile has died due to cell phone use and
more concentration needed in driving on today's busy roads for the
most part IMHO. Very few hams fire up the two meter rig at home,
except maybe for emergency use on Skywarn or to check into a weekly
club net. Are these new radios going to sell?

Andy,

Harv's CD is a "Live" Linux OS a few things can be saved such as
bookmarks and "home" files. Not sure you can add other applications.
To be sure send a quick email to Harv, [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I think Harv also reads this group, maybe he will answer.

Otherwise Simply Mepis (based on Debian) is easy to use, configures
your hardware easy.

You can add applications by using the "Synaptic" interface or compile
from "tar ball" files in a Terminal session.

Download and then burn from iso using your CD burning software.
Once the CD loaded there is an icon on the desktop to install to your
HDD permently. Be careful on setting up partitions so you don't wipe
out your Windows partition. You need about 5 Gigs hard drive space
for Mepis. Simply Mepis: http://www.mepis.org/node/1462 is the
download page, select a site and save iso file.

Speaker output voltage can be around one volt. You only need around
20 milivolts, using a resistor pad in the transmit audio path helps
"knock down" the voltage to a manageable level. See the digrams at:

Then using your Windows sound mixer application for fine tuning to
adjust transmit output. See:

[digitalradio] Re: PSK31 With TS-850S

2006-02-21 Thread Jerry W
Mark,
Use the rear ACC2 socket.
Pin 3 fixed audio output to Line Input of sound card.
Pin 4 Ground for audio output.
Pin 11 Transmit audio input from Speaker out of sound card.
Pin 12 Teansmit audip input Ground.
Use a 10 to 1 resistor pad to make the speaker out managable.
Pin 9 for PTT through transistor switch from Com port.

You might also have some input & output level control though Menus on
the TS-850 maybe under Packet or TNC, check the in manual.

See: http://www.w5bbr.com/soundbd.html for interface diagrams.

Has anyone interfaced their Kenwood TS-850S for PSK31?

I'm trying to get on the air with PSK31 and my Kenwood TS-850S. I am
using my laptop's sound card to decode the signals and it works fine.
However, I'm having trouble with the audio for transmit. I have the
audio out going from the speaker jack of the laptop to the MIC and MICG
(mic ground) pins of the mic jack on the TS-850S. I can't seem to find
any position on the mic gain that is either NO ALC deflection or FULL
 SCALE ALC deflection.
