negative, a friend of mine just bought one of the SCS modems for half

well, if our digital software was ported to linux, this would be an ideal
little pc for the purpose. the 1gb of flash memory is more than enough while
the Geode cpu is also sufficient to run a small linux. OS.

BUT, unfortunately, we are screwed with not having our MT63, Olivia, etc
outside of the Windows OS . So, this little unit which would be great for
digital purposes in my opinion by virtue of size, weight, power draw, etc...
is of little use.

back to trying to find something equivalent which will run Windows versions of
our most commonly used (in MARS) modes.

thanks for the source. it was certainly interesting.

wait for it. ARRL just recently leaned on FCC to publish its decision on some
sort of omnibus bill. FCC did pass the agreement to fall into line with the
EU and rest-of-world transmission rules. but made no specific rule on
implementing the no code decision. in fact, by agreeing to the EU, etal
rules, it is doing away with code. BUT, it has not formally done so until it
publishes an implementation.

Here it is from the latest ARRL letter ===

==>ARRL PRESSES FCC TO RELEASE "OMNIBUS" AMATEUR RADIO REPORT AND ORDER

The ARRL has called upon FCC Chairman Kevin J. Martin and his four
Commission colleagues to help end "a very frustrating and protracted delay"
by releasing a Report and Order in the so-called "Omnibus" Amateur Radio
proceeding, WT Docket 04-140. The 2004 Wireless Telecommunications Bureau
(WTB) proceeding, one of two still awaiting FCC release, consolidated a
dozen rule making petitions addressing various Part 97 rule changes --
including ARRL's Novice refarming proposal. In its Notice of Proposed Rule
Making and Order (NPRM&O), the Commission proposed to go along with the
League's refarming concept and most other recommendations. ARRL President
Joel Harrison, W5ZN, says the long-overdue Report and Order seems to be
stalled for no reason.

"I believe it's grossly incompetent for a government agency to fail to act
on something affecting the Amateur Radio Service," Harrison commented,
"especially after the recognition Amateur Radio has received over the past
year from members of Congress, public service agencies and even the
President." The oldest of the rule making petitions dates back more than
five years, while the NPRM&O came out two and one-half years ago. "There's
nothing controversial in this proceeding," he said. "The FCC needs to act on
this. That's the bottom line."

In an October 3 letter to the Commission
, Harrison said the Amateur Radio Service asks very little of the FCC,
"and our performance during recent disasters amply justifies facilitation of
these relatively minor rule changes" that will enhance Amateur Radio's
ability to react in emergencies and disasters. The FCC's apparent
foot-dragging "is not responsive government," he wrote.

The ARRL's Novice refarming plan would reallocate current Novice/Tech Plus
subbands to expand portions of the 80, 40 and 15 meter phone bands. Harrison
maintained that the League's proposal and others in the proceeding would
"greatly improve the efficiency of Amateur Radio's use of the high-frequency
(HF) spectrum."

The FCC further agreed with the ARRL's proposal to extend privileges in the
current General CW-only HF subbands to present Novice and Tech Plus
licensees (or Technicians with Element 1 credit). It also proposed to
largely do away with Part 97 rules prohibiting the manufacture and marketing
to Amateur Radio operators of amplifiers capable of operation on 10 and 12
meters.

An ARRL delegation that met with Martin's Chief of Staff Fred Campbell last
February was told that nothing substantive was holding up the proceeding.
Since that time, Harrison told the Commission, inquiries addressed to
Campbell and to WTB management and staff regarding the proceeding's status
have gone unanswered.

"I urge you to release the Report and Order that we understand has been
drafted and ready for Commission consideration for more than a year now,"
Harrison stressed in closing.

Perhaps more eagerly awaited is FCC action on the "Morse code" proceeding,
WT Docket 05-235. WTB staff already has indicated that a Report and Order in
the older "omnibus" proceeding will come first, however. The FCC's Notice of
Proposed Rule Making and Order (NPRM&O) in WT Docket 05-235 last July
proposed to eliminate the Element 1 (5 WPM) Morse code requirement for all
license classes.

A Report and Order in either Amateur Radio proceeding would formally adopt
and spell out the changes and specify their effective dates.

actually, there is a modem in the 736.
why can't that handle the packet checking tasks?
it IS an FSK system but should be available, using HRD to run it, to handle
any modem duties in the txcvr. Also, I THINK, that there is a high speed
modem built into my mobo as well as 10/100 etherlink.

I am just trying to figure out why I have to add another piece of hardware to
the system. we KNOW that the latest, deep pocket ICOMs like the 756P3 are
fully set up with an internal "TNC", or so I have been assured by some of
those elmers/gurus (the ones who do not agree with each other )
The reason I am here is to try to find out what is true and what is bushwa and
to simplify the shack to as great an extent as possible. My experience is
that the more hardware you add, the greater the load on output of final
product. that applies to anything with a pretty limited source of power, be
it computing, motive or whatever.

I truly do appreciate all the information I am getting here.

Again, do I HAVE TO HAVE a TNC with an IC736, 746 or 756?

now, I am not a geek for computers, but my Perl mobo has a pair of 3.1ghz cpus
running with huge cache, and 2gb of ram. the soundcard is running along with
a pretty wide gateway and its own gb or so of ram.

i just don't think that the wait states, if there are any, are going to be
sufficient to bog down a real, damned slow modem since most of those are
probably running at 1200 to 2400bps. which is real slow.
I have a dsl which supposedly is running at 3.2kbips but it is uploading
slower than my pc is pushing it up the line.

I am definitely confused which is NOT unusual in the least.

another point, my IC 736 has a modem in it, CI-V compliant or ready, and
supposedly, I should be able to load the Pactor/ALE, etc software in the PC
and using it and the sound card and the rig running software, -- push traffic
out over the USB2.0 interface cable to the rig. and again, that is with HRD
controlling the operation. Obviously, the modem even were it running at
56,000 is still far slower than my dsl is capable of or the speed at which my
pc is loading.up or down. the slowest thing going is probably the TNC.
BUT Pactor I is supposedly designed to work with the old, original slow
modems.

So, please enlighten me

I know NOTHING!!! contact tech support for ICOM in Washington state and

Why are the Aussies so far ahead of us on these rigs???

Interesting, the tech at ICOM/Washington state, told me last week that this
radio was not even supposed to be in this country because it is not fully
compatible with the standards being set by Kenwood, Harris, Micom, etc, etc.

But, they are working on it. Icom just does not have anything usable to talk
with Codan and Harris, and Micom and so on. When they do, they will bring
out a new series but it will not be the F7000. the F7000 is apparently just a
test bed.

[digitalradio] About Icom 7nnn rcvr and txcvr remote operation from a PC

OK, got a good check up from the onco, no growth to speak up in almost 3 yrs.
Moving along...

Just got off the phone from ICOM Tech Spt
They do not make any software to run a rig BUT this particular tech said that
the best he has found out there is:

HAM RADIO DELUXEhttp://hrd.ham-radio.ch/

which he further states is a free download. It allows you to change freqs,
adjust this and that and so on and so forth.

How about someone downloading it and then posting a review?

Or, has anyone or IS anyone using this s/w now ??

Again, this is for a Chinese interface cable with a mini plug on the end for
the REMOTE hole on the back plane of the txcvr and a USB or a 232 on the
other end to plug into a PC. These CI-V cables are all over ebay if you are
looking to buy one.

You do NOT need a rigblaster or a rascal according to today's talk with the
tech UNLESS you want to run MORE THAN one txcvr. THAT saves about $100 or
more.!!!

hope this helps

sorry, got tied up getting things out of the way today so that i can go spend
the day tomorrow at MD Anderson doing MRIs, etc
Then Monday it is see the Onco. So, perhaps I can call them Tuesday unless
someone else. if so, my question is whether rig control can be done
from the pc using only the interface cable. if so, which IC txcvrs???
Using ICOM software??? to me, this is essentially a matter of laplinking
to simplify it. there is a computer in the radio, why not use interfacing
software to connect it to a software program on the pc and use that to tell
the rig, what to do??? I know that the new Kenwood has an -x model which is a
plain box which requires hooking up to a pc to operate it. isfai can tell,
that model cannot even be operated without a personal computer.

sounds like a good question for the techies at
Icom America Inc.
Service Department
2380 116th Ave NE
Bellevue, WA 98004
(425) 454-7619

wish I could remember who it was I talked with but it took about a 15 minute
wait on the phone to get thru to him. but boy, did he ever know his
business!! in fact, two or three others in the area overhearing him, were
offering suggestions.. but then we were into the subject of ALE specific
radios, etc. and that the F7000 was just not yet ready for prime time in that
it was not interfacing with other rigs like Kenwood, Codan, Harris, and
MICOM. iow, not using the same standards which those mfrs use.
sorta like VHS vs BETA

I will try to call again tomorrow because i want to know if I can run the 736
from the pc via the interface cable. or do I need a piece of ICOM software to
do that

I will ask your question re PTT control specifically at that time.

here is one and there are a hundred more.
USB CI-V CAT INTERFAE CABLE for ICOM CT-17
Item number: 110017851150

disregard the "for ICOM CT-17"

this is the aftermarket interface cable which you can also buy from ICOM
AMERICA or whatever the site is called. ICOM's cost about $55.00

hope this helps

that is why I cancelled the purchase of a CT-17 after doing a lot of googling.
and that is why I called ICOM Tech Spt in Oregon and they verified that all I
needed was an aftermarket cable to connect the radio's remote port to a usb
port on the pc. and that is IT !!!

so, now I need to go to ebay and buy the cable and then to download some
software.

thanks again

no, all you need is to go to ebay and to buy an interface cable which plugs
into the remote port on the radio and into a USB port on the pc. THAT IS
IT!! you do NOT need a rascal, you do not need a rigblaster. the radio
has it all in its CI-V circuitry. the cable will usually cost about 22$ plus
a small rape of $13 for shipping. so, for $35 you are set up to go.

please re-read the comments previous to your message in the thread.
