[IxDA Discuss] Password Strength Requirements

2009-04-15 Thread Alan Cox
Does anyone have any evidence, anecdotal or formal, about how
different password strength requirements impact the usability of a
web-based application?

There's a spectrum of different strength requirements. I've seen
sites that don't have any requirements, other than the password
exists. I've seen others that require the password to be at least
10 characters, with at least 1 lower case, 1 upper case, 1 digit, 1
"special" character (like #...@!), and then require the password to
be updated regularly while preventing reuse of old passwords.

Our security purists here want "really strong" passwords, though
not as strong as my second example above. I'm looking to see if
there's any knowledge out there about how different points on the
strength-spectrum impact usability. Is there a watershed spot where
if we make it more complicated than X, usability really suffers, but
all points less complicated than X are equally easy?

Thanks
Alan

[IxDA Discuss] Two \"Delete\" behaviors - one type of label?

2009-04-15 Thread Daniel
There are two "Delete" patterns I have noticed out there:

1. - Immediate Deletion: As the name implies, the delete action takes
place immediately. There are no confirmation steps of any kind.

2. - Mediated Deletion: This type usually includes an intermediate
"page" or dialogue box that asks the user to "confirm" that they
indeed do want to delete the item along with very important pertinent
information associated with the delete action.

The problem for me arises when we use the same label for both of
these different types of behaviors.

In other words, nothing differentiates the different delete actions.
Both of them may simply say "Delete this XYZ"

Has anyone here seen a label that provides the users some sort of
clue as to which action will take place?

DISCLAIMER:
(In the interest of clarity and saving time...I don't want this
question to be confused with the closely related topic of whether
"Confirmation dialogs" or "confirmation pages" are necessary.
That's another question.

For now I'd like to ask you to suspend your preference on whether
you think confirmation is needed or not and assume that the system
you are working on will have a "confirmation" step for some of the
delete actions. To complicate things, the system will ALSO use
Immediate Deletion. This way the problem is clear. Once again, this
is not a question of whether you think the choice to allow both types
of deletion is right or wrong. It's a question about labeling and
differentiating two different delete processes.)

You probably want to clarify first how your clients are getting paid --
clearly, that will help determine optimal ad placement. Putting
ads in the "third column" makes sense if you only care about page

Re: [IxDA Discuss] ISO Country List Field

2009-04-15 Thread Jabari Simmons
Christine:

I'm trying to read between the lines here... Your "design"
problem: A) a reluctance to "maintain a current list of countries
for the application"; B) a fear that countries will be missed
(hence, the inclusion of the "other" free entry option; and C) an
assumption that the data integrity of country names is not-so-crucial
since it won't be otherwise used by the system (you say that
Birth_Country is "stored" in the client record but not queried for
reporting purposes... are these data otherwise *viewable* and by
whom?).

Is that about right?

[IxDA Discuss] Thanks IxDA! Accepted to ITP program @ NYU!

2009-04-15 Thread Michael Martinez-Campos
Last year I posted a thread on this list asking about master's programs. My
perspective was changed by the responses I received, reorienting my ideas of
what I want to get out of school. I'm proud to say that i've been accepted
into the Interactive Telecommunications graduate program at NYU! I visited
the program last Fall and it was AMAZING. Dozens of classes on the bleeding
edges of technology with an emphasis on collaboration.

I'm planning on focusing on getting my interaction design skills finely
honed along with classes in mobile applications, multitouch development,
sustainable energy, the list goes on! :)

I'm still working on the details of how i'm going to pay for the program. If
anybody knows of a company that would be willing to give me a grant (or
other aid) in exchange for work later on (or intern work), please let me
know.

Thanks again IxDA! I am EXCITED!

Sincerely,

Re: [IxDA Discuss] ISO Country List Field

2009-04-15 Thread Katie Albers
You're very likely to encounter a fundamental problem here: There are
many people who were born in countries that no longer exist, or who,
for other reasons are likely to enter a country name that does not
correspond to an ISO list. Not to mention that we live in a period
when the list itself is in a state of flux. One way or another, you
have to let people enter the name of the country they consider they
were born in, which means that you need to maintain a list.

This is what I did in a similar situation:

There are WAY too many countries to use a drop-down menu. I've never
seen a useful drop-down menu for the US States - and there are far
fewer of those than of countries.

I'm not clear whether you are using the ISO list as a way to error
check entries or as a way to codify entries. In either case, this is
one of those cases, where it's easiest and best to let the computer do
the standardization work.

You need 2 lists: The ISO list that you want to codify people by
The list of likely entries (see above for
why these are not the same)

Provide a text field for country.
When users enter their country, check the typed entry against your list
  - If the typed entry does not correspond to an item in your list,
~ the computer generates a message with the likely correct
entry and ask if that is correct with radio buttons for yes and no

   ~ If yes then
= the computer displays the corrected entry
= In its database, the computer ties the entered
country to the ISO country

= the user proceeds to the rest of the data entry
~ If no then the entry is added to the computer's list of
likely entries

Or you could skip the ISO country and just spell check the entries,
which still requires a list, but a different kind of list. It also has
the potential of removing comparison possibilities if you want to do
any cross-time work on places where the country name has changed.

Good luck

allow for spelling and other inaccuracies. One solution is to use a
drop down menu with the current ISO country list with an option for
'Other' which would enable a text field.

Has anyone else encountered this situation? Is there a standard

[IxDA Discuss] Great Personalization Examples

2009-04-15 Thread Angel Anderson
Hi All,

Anyone out there want to share examples of helpful personalization that
they've encountered? I'm looking for things that go beyond arranging widgets
on a homepage (www.google.com, www.netvibes.com). I'm looking for good
examples of:

   - Data analysis tools used to predict likely future interactions
   - User profiling, using data collected from a number of different sites
to capture and respond to user action across the web.

Kind regards,

Re: [IxDA Discuss] ISO Country List Field

2009-04-15 Thread Aditya Saxena
Hi Christine,

Even I think that using an auto complete field would be a much better
solution. I cant point to older requests though as I am new to this
group. However, I have encountered situations during development of
financial applications where auto-complete field makes interaction
way too user-friendly.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Recommendations on Remote Unmoderated Usability Test Tools?

2009-04-15 Thread Craig Melbourne
Shima

I've looked at quite a remote tools recently particulalry for
running unmoderated tests for getting some benchmark data. As much as
I hate to admit it the price has always been an issue. UserZoom,
KeyNote look great but way out of my (usual clients) budget. Loop11
and Optimal workshop also have interesting offerings in Beta (with no
costing information).

@James Page I'm looking forward to seeing Webnographer.

In the end I followed the lead of Tom Tullis and built my own. It's
does similar things to the UserZoom and Loop11 tools (not quite as
much) but cost me very little.

I won't bore the group here with what or how but if you want to
discuss this further feel free to mail me direct.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] ISO Country List Field

2009-04-15 Thread Yohan Creemers
Hi Christine,

To prevent spelling mistakes you could use a textbox with auto complete (aka
type ahead) functionality.

I think the current standard solution is: using a dropdown with ISO 3166-1
country names.
There is a previous discussion about selecting a country:

[IxDA Discuss] ISO Country List Field

2009-04-15 Thread christine catsifas
We are developing an internal application where origin of birth is captured.
The information is stored on the client's record, but is not used for
reporting. We do not want to have to maintain a current list of countries for
the application, but to use a text field will allow for spelling and other
inaccuracies. One solution is to use a drop down menu with the current ISO
country list with an option for 'Other' which would enable a text field.

Has anyone else encountered this situation? Is there a standard solution for
this problem?

Thanks,
Christine Catsifas

Subject: [IxDA Discuss] Advice on Masters in Interaction Design

Hi all,
My name is Chris, and I'm about to make the leap into starting my
interaction design education. The problem is I'm having a lot of trouble
finding interaction designers willing to talk with me about their careers.
I can't find any alumni in the field from where I did undergraduate studies,
and I can't be sure I'm getting the whole picture from professors I talk to
at graduate schools.

If any of you would be willing to speak with me about your careers, how you
got where you are, if you enjoy the work, what's important, what's not, if
one can make a living doing interaction design, I would appreciate it beyond
words. I graduated from college about 2 years ago and am interning at NASA
before going to grad school. I'd love some advice as to how I can get
something useful out of my experience here.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Online Advertising vs User Experience

2009-04-15 Thread mark schraad

Ankit.

One of the problems you will likely encounter is both cultural (to
the org) and semantic. Try to define what constitutes the user
experience. And for a frustrating exercise, try to establish metric
for that. Then, survey your stakeholders to determine what they think
the user experience is... or what a good one is. This is at the root
of the problem.

There is little consensus... you will find very few people that won't
tell you of the importance of the user experience... yet those same
people will quickly compromise it in exchange for revenue. Look at
what about.com has become in recent years. Far from its position as a
quality information site of years ago... it is basically a search
engine magnet with little if any usable content. User experience (and
content) have taken a back seat to revenue.

There are also places where the two overlap. When you observe or
research readers looking through the travel section of a newspaper...
you will notice that the advertisements, to a great extent, are the
content. This revenue vs experience issue is not as cut and dry as it
may seem.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] interesting quote, "Experience design is not about controlling the experience you try to give them"

2009-04-15 Thread Francis Norton
(As I just commented on Nathaniel's post)
I googled "define:elicit" and got some interesting definition - my favourite
(in this context) was:

"To evoke, educe (emotions, feelings, responses, etc.); to generate, obtain,
or provoke as a response or answer; To draw out, bring out, bring forth
(something latent); to obtain information from someone or something; To use
logic to arrive at truth; to derive by reason; deduce; construe"

I like the "(something latent)" - I don't take "elicit behaviour" as getting
users to do what they don't actually want to do, more to do that which will
actually achieve their aims. For example, if the user wants to delete a
tweet, you want him to click on the "dustbin" icon, you want to "elicit"
that behaviour.

I think your definition does apply, but at a more general level. I like the
"elicit" definition as being more specific.

Re: [IxDA Discuss] Online Advertising vs User Experience

2009-04-15 Thread frank long
A bit of lateral thinking here...

Through our user research we found that 3 column web pages don't
really work - Users tend to ignore the third column...which makes it
a perfect place to slot in unwanted ads...ala facebook.

It wont effect the User experience as users will not notice content
in this area of the page -

Voila!
you gain ad space without negative user impact!

not making the compromise to giving more space and importance to ads
than the content. Optimum relevant Ads do enhance the user experience

Re: [IxDA Discuss] [EVENT] IxDA Los Angeles & Yahoo present "Personas SUCK / Personas RULE!", Wednesday, April 29th 7-9pm

2009-04-15 Thread Angel Anderson
Thanks for the support, Liz! First let me say that this event is very much
inspired by the presentation that you and Steve Calde did for Portland. I'm
hoping to continue the conversation here in Los Angeles because at our last
two UX book club meetings, the topic (and usual debate!) came up and so it
seems like the time is right for our local group to have a deeper discussion
on this topic. :-)
I believe that great discussions and workshops should absolutely be repeated
in multiple local groups all over the world. That's the power of the local
groups. They let us learn from each other and delve into certain issues
where our community is conflicted.

IxDA Los Angeles is stoked to have a community site on Ning and, as always,
I'll be sharing a review of the event with the global discussion list.
