Listening to internet radio with softsqueeze (2.0b1 came with 3/26

Looking forward to Monday's release!

It's worth noting that using --fast-toc will not read pregap or index

should grab everything correctly, but it'll take a bit longer.

Well, I know that's what the documentation says, but I'm not entirely
convinced that it's true.

I've got some CDs that definitely have pregap markers that are picked up by
--fast-toc. Despite what 'man cdrdao' says, I believe the difference with
--fast-toc is that it simply trusts what the disc's actual TOC tells it
without going through a verification step. Indeed, without the --fast-toc
option, read-toc gets some things wrong. For example, using --fast-toc, ISRC
codes are picked up correctly for each track, but without the --fast-toc
option, cdrdao gives an ISRC code of all zeroes for each track. I'm more
inclined to trust the results of --fast-toc given that it reads the *actual*
TOC from the disc.

Now this is purely conjecture on my part based on having played around with
this on several different discs. I have not dug into the source code or
anything, so don't just take my word for it.

I think Slim Devices has room (and a market) for a number of different
models of the SB2. I'd gladly pay a higher price for a model with
navigation controls in the form of buttons and dials. I'd also be more
than willing to pay extra for an upgraded chassis and power supply.

Instead of having a wired and wireless model of the SB2, I'd sugget that a
better approach would be to offer different models built around the same
processing core - say the current base model, a model with a built in
amplifier, a model with upgraded chassis, power supply and manual
controls - then make the wireless capability a user installable option in
the form of a wireless PCMCIA card or something similar.

That's an good idea, but it's not really needed -- just get hold of a

Besides, I prefer to only pay for what I need - I really don't need to

[slim] Windows Service Dead

2005-03-27 Thread Nick Locke
Hi, I have the pukka 6 beta from the front page of the web site.
Periodically, the Windows service dies with this.

The description for Event ID ( 0 ) in Source ( Application ) cannot be found.
The local computer may not have the necessary registry information or message
DLL files to display messages from a remote computer. You may be able to use
the /AUXSOURCE= flag to retrieve this description; see Help and Support for
details.

The following information is part of the event: Can't call method title on
an undefined value at /PerlApp/Slim/Buttons/TrackInfo.pm line 223.

in the error log. The last bit seems to give a big clue!

Not being a Perl person, I haven't tried to find the line of code. It's
probably something simple. Thoughts welcome. Thanks

[slim] Internet Radio Dropouts

2005-03-27 Thread Scott Bennett
I have been having a recurring problem with internet radio streams since
about the time I went to 5.1. Every 2 minutes or so, I get a drop in the
stream. Watching buffer fullness, it starts at about 70%, then gradually
drops down to 0%, where it shuts off for a couple seconds, then starts
over again at 70%. This happens with many different streams in different
formats and bitrates. (I'm trying to listen to KCRW right now.) This
never used to happen, and it is now making the internet radio feature
very difficult to use.
The streams themselves play fine on my local computer, so the problem
isn't with the streams. My local music also plays fine, so my network
presumably isn't the problem.
Is this a known problem? Is there any setting I can change to improve it?
I'm on 5.4.1, SB1, wireless connection about 70% quality, WinXP, no
bitrate limiting.
Thanks for any help,
Scott

[slim] Latest SVN - ogg needs sox

2005-03-27 Thread Joshua Uziel
I was having problems with 6.0b3 indexing my ogg files... all of my
music is in ogg, all ripped from CDs I own, etc. On some files, it
would fail to read the headers, just some fields, or claim the file
didn't have a header. At any rate, I decided to give the latest and
greatest in the subversion tree a shot to see if the issue was fixed.

Sadly, I hit another issue... with any file I'd try to play, it would
display Problem: can't open file for and the track name and quickly
jump to the last song in the list. There was no message in the log, and
after some digging, I found that it was looking for sox... an apt-get
install sox later and things are working again.

The indexing bug of before is now fixed... I just wanted to save another
ogg user the effort of tracking this issue down. The svn commit is at

  http://svn.slimdevices.com/trunk/server/convert.conf?rev=2665view=rev

And replying to myself, I see that in Slim/Player/Source.pm, there is
the code snippet around line 1429 of:

while ($command  $command =~ /\[([^]]+)\]/g) {

if (!Slim::Utils::Misc::findbin($1)) {
$command = undef;
$::d_source  msg(   drat, missing binary $1\n);
}
}

I removed sox from my system, enabled d_source and sure enough saw

2005-03-27 12:01:31.4366drat, missing binary sox

So this seems like something more fundamental than should be hidden
behind a debug variable. Should the $::d_source be removed and the
message made more general like

msg(Error: missing binary \$1\, please see convert.conf\n);

as I can see this easily happening frequently.

[slim] optimal volume on SB and buffer fullness questions

2005-03-27 Thread Charles Stanton
Does anyone have suggestions on what volume level the SB should be set
to for best quality audio output. I intuitively thought to just keep
it at the max and use the receiver's volume control to adjust. But I
was messing around with it and it seemed to sound better at about
50%-60% of max.

Is there a general recommendation on the best volume level?

The second question was on the buffer. I have a lot of high bit-rate
MP3 vbr encoded files that are around 280 kbs or more. I don't have
dropouts, but when I enabled the buffer view in the player, those
files mostly ran the buffer at 99% to 100%. Is that a bad thing?
Should I limit the bit-rate to get the buffer usage down?

If anyone has insights on these questions, please share them. Thanks.

Re: [slim] 3/26 build skin highlights don't change

For a while now, including the 3/26 build of 6.0, skins that highlight

I have certainly noticed this, too, and I've done a little testing to
see when it does and doesn't update. I use Fishbone, normally, which
also highlights tracks, but it's the same for the skins you mentioned.

If playing an album or playlist or whatever, and one song ends and the
next starts playing, the current track highlight does not change, even
if I manually reload the browser (it does this in Internet Explorer
and Firefox). Even if I wipe my cache, kill the HTML cache on the
server or whatever, it never highlights any track but the first.

Ways I can make it highlight the correct track:

1. Use the Next or Previous Track buttons on the skin to skip to the
next track. The display will update right away to correctly show the
currently playing track.

2. Change skins. When I change from one skin to another, it
automatically updates the highlighting.

3. Change the URL from defining the skin to using the skin selected in
System Settings. By this I mean say I normally have Fishbone as my
skin. If I change the URL in my browser from http://servername:9000
to http://servername:9000/Fishbone/ it will also update the
highlighted track.

This is svn revision 2777, running on Ubuntu Linux. I'm using IE and
Firefox on Windows.

Hope this is helpful.

Re: [slim] optimal volume on SB and buffer fullness questions

2005-03-27 Thread Sean Adams
Charles,
Theoretically, for most setups max volume should be optimal. If your
ears say otherwise, just use whatever sounds best.

Regarding buffer usage: the more the better. If you're seeing 99-100%
then this is ideal - it means that your wireless connection is
consistently able to move data faster than the Squeezebox is consuming
it, which is what you want.

Thanks.

Re: [slim] Replacement antenna?

2005-03-27 Thread Sean Adams
Robin,
The connector is called reverse polarity SMA. It is very common -
used on nearly all access points that have removable external antennas.
Any 2.4GHz antenna with this connector should work.

Hi,
I managed to be rather too rough with the antenna on my wireless SB1

I presume (hope?) it's a fairly generic part and that I can pick up
another one fairly easily.

Can someone provide me with the spec. for the connector or, beter
still, point me at a suitable replacement, preferably high gain?

Thanks,
R.

Re: [slim] New Item Request- Squeezebox with amplifier

Not many folks used powered speakers, or would want to
I totally disagree. Powered speakers are actually a great
innovation. Matching amps with speakers has always been a black
art; better that they do it at the factory - that way they can
tailor the amp to the driver(s) and perform any EQ needed to get
the best performance.
Adding amplifiers to the Squeezebox seems completely
unnecessary. It's like asking for a CD player with an amp -
sure it's been done before but the vast majority just want the
source component.
Of the hundreds of systems that I've listened to over the years, I can
count on one hand the number that utilized powered speakers. A few more
were said to be 'active', with an outboard amp/crossover - which is a bit
better approach to a manufacturer's desire to match amp and speaker, IMO.
There just aren't very many powered speakers sold because few people are
interested in them. People who care about sound quality want the
flexibility to find that perfect amp (or find the perfect speakers for the
amp they love). The mass market wouldn't know what to do with powered
speakers if you gave them away - because they have a 2 or 7.1 channel
receiver in their system.

Anyway, the kind of system that we're talking about - Squeezebox,
inexpensive amp, and speakers isn't an audiophile-class playback system -
not by a long shot, so amp/speaker matching isn't a consideration for the
intended market. It's a second or third system for the kitchen, or the
bedroom, or the garage. An amplified Squeezebox would just be a very
convenient, compact device to achieve this and would sound fine in 99% of
its intended applications.

Thanks - I've been in a fix so it
doesn't crash. Are you able to reproduce this?

What item did you select track info on?

I'm not deliberately selecting track info - I assume that happens as a side
effet of trying to play the track?

The only thing I can see is that the file name has an apostrophe (single
quote) in it, as does the Title MP3 tag.

Just tried going back to the previous version of SlimServer and it works fine
there. It is reproduceable on 6 - the service stops every time I try to play
that track.
