[slim] Live Search - Erratic Behavior

2005-09-06 Thread leonyu13

I can't use the default skin at all because Live Search crashes
SlimServer every time. I am able to use Default2 but I get some strange
behavior, not sure if it's intentional, just me, or a bug.

When I begin typing text to search for, the results are narrowed as I
type. I get results in Artist, Album and Song, as expected. But if I
hit Enter or click Search, I only get Song results.

This wouldn't be all that bad, except that at this point, the Live
part of the search no longer works. In other words, back-spacing and
typing characters in the search field does not give any new results
until I hit Enter or click Search, so I end up with only Song results.
I have to refresh (which takes me back home) then click on Search to
get the Live functionality back.

SlimServer Version: 6.2b1 - 4166 - Linux - EN - iso-8859-1 on Redhat
9.0
Accessing server via browser on XP machine, same results using Firefox
1.0.6 and IE 6.0.

No, they do more than that.

SysV init scripts just launch a service when you enter a particular run
level (and stop it when you leave, possibly).

supervise starts and monitors a service, i.e. if the service dies for
whatever reason supervise re-launches it pretty much immediately.

svc is just a tools to control supervise'd services.

multilog is a more reliable way to log than syslog.

I've not seen Nagios before, but it's not really the same sort of
thing as daemontools.

Looks quite neat, though.

Nagios is up there with Slimserver in coolness. Nagios can be tough to
configure, but it's amazingly flexible and really quite smart. A glowing
example of open source software that beats the pants off of commercial
alternatives.

I'll maybe check it out some time when I've got a minute (yeah, right!)

[slim] how many clients for my slimserver ?

2005-09-06 Thread Alexis

Hello all
I did a search, but didn't find anything about that
I want to know how many clients can be supported by my server (6.2):
AMD 1800
256mo RAM
Windows server 2003
10 mbps upload

With Lame transcoding limit sets to 128 kbps, I can theoretically have
~ 80 clients
But I suppose slimserver will be overloaded before (not enough RAM I
guess).
Do you have an idea of clients max number with this configuration ?

If you don't know, I will open my slimserver to you, and ask you to
connect, in order to test.
thank you !

[slim] SqueezeBox 2 rehoused

2005-09-06 Thread CardinalFang

I've finally got my Squeezebox into a new housing, it's one I got from
an Italian Company - AudioKit
(http://www.audiokit.it/ENG/Frames/Introduction1.htm)

Here's a picture:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/[EMAIL PROTECTED]/40756540/

It's the central unit. The left hole is for a power LED and the right
exposes the remote control receiver. It still works really well even
with the more limited aperture.

The case is a tiny bit wider than I wanted, but looks OK. There's an
awful lot of blank metal, which I need to get used to, but now I have
lots of space for linear power supplies, clock modifications etc.

The inside isn't so pretty at the moment, I managed to get a new cable
to link the main board with the display, but it's a metre long! Also I
need to get new stand-offs to mount the display at the right distance
and also paint some of the front panel edges black to minimise
reflection. The opening is in fact a little too small, it doesn't
obscure anything, but you need to be directly in front of the unit to
see all the screen from a distance. I can live with that.

Ideally I think a case should be like the bottom unit in this picture,
the Musical Fidelity XDac3. I'll stick with this for the moment, it
wasn't too expensive to do (under £100, including machining the front)
and it matches the Copland gear well, but if I see a nice smaller unit
I may be tempted to shrink it down!

Have you raised a bug for the crash caused by livesearch?
(Seems strange that it works in Default2 but not Default.)

I too have noticed the difference between the 'livesearch' and the
results given when the search is explicitly started.
I see no reason why the should return different results and it is indeed
quite annoying.

I think I have this fixed now - if Windows Firewall is enabled on the
bridged PC then nothing will get through even from PC's on the same
network, same subnet etc.

Disabling windows firewall allows me to successfully access the bridged
PC. I wish Windows Firewall had the ability to let through anything by
IP address etc.

Anyway thanks to everyone for their help.

Of course! That's what firewalls do. Until you configure them
otherwise, most block everything incoming by default, and are less
restrictive outgoing. Your outgoing ping works with the firewall
enabled because the connection was initiated by the stateful firewalled
PC, and the firewall maintains a connections table. But incoming
traffic like your ping from the other PC across the bridge is blocked
by the firewall.

Being 99% certain can often lead to misleading diagnosis.

That's correct. Another official release is about a month or so away (6.2). I'm
unaware whether 6.1.2 will be made an official release or not.

I do not have any playlists or shortcuts, just a straight folder
hierarchy and file naming conventions to keep it all straight.

That's a good start. Lots of database cleanup has been part of the 6.2
pre-release builds. Lots of new features and a few kinks. If you are
cautious, you may prefer to try the 6.1.2 builds which are kept more to
critical fixes and stability. This may resolve the issues you are seeing. They

Not even close. There's TCP overhead (so a 10mbit connection is only
good to about 8-9mbit at most), you won't be able to handle all those
connections with your limited RAM and the system will be swapping
constantly. With your slim.exe running and the two trasncoders (two
per client), there will be a lot going on. And don't forget the web
interface use - it heavily taxes the system, as does library scanning.
With that system, if you can manage 15 connections responding well, I'd
call it a day.

There is no such thing as digital speakers, all loudspeakers are
inherentily analog, as they take an analog electrical signal and
translate it to an analog sound.

Agreed

The question is do you want an amp and DAC inside the speaker?

I'd answer no, because the SB2's DAC is pretty darn good, and you
probably won't beat it until you are looking at top of the line
 meridians.

Agreed

If you are looking at studio monitors how about Mackie's 624. They are
THX Ultra certified and used in the two recording studios I've been in.
Very flat, and very good sounding.

I also agree on this point, however they're far outside his price range. At
the price point he's looking at he's best off just going to his local
electronics/computer retailer (something like a Best Buy) and finding a set

Yeah, fairly generic :), but I know that SlimServer keeps a lot of
things in memory rather than hitting the database more often. So even
though the database might be getting fully cleared, the data in the
running server's memory may not. Maybe the coders didn't take into
consideration what happens if you change the music folder and do a
rescan. If so, it would be a bug.

Usually, though, as kdf pointed out, the problem lies with having

FWIW, I moved to the SB from the Netgear MP101 (there are a

I think your question is a good one but clearly there are UPNP

2000+ reports, and many bugfixes that never get reported or never entered into

Hence why I often simply jump to the suggestion of trying the latest from the

Don't see why you need to do all that - as far as I can tell the rr

I think it would be really nice to be able to amend the name. I renamed my RSS

Most RSS news feed readers allow the name to be changed.

2005-09-06 Thread bgriffis

Thanks everyone for the replies. I think I'm going to try going to 6.2
to see how that behaves.

This is the first time I've upgraded. Do I need to completely
uninstall and then reinstall or if I try to install a new one will it
just upgrade the old one? I'd like to try and keep my user preferences
if possible.

Thanks again everyone! I love my new SB2, just working out a few minor
kinks! :)

[slim] One more attempt...

2005-09-06 Thread CavesOfTQLT

Okay, just a post to say I'm going to give the SlimServer system one
more day before calling it quits and selling the SB2. Nothing should be
this difficult to set up.

I've binned Windows XP, installed Linux, finally got it loaded with
SlimServer, scanned the library, everything appears okay, SB2 connects
to the wireless network, sees SlimServer, but still it's plagued with
break-ups in playing music/delays in browsing the menus with the
remote.

According to the SB2 the wireless strength is floating around the 80%
mark so I can't see it being a wireless issue. Anyway tomorrow I'm
going to connect the SB2 via a wired cable straight to the router to
see if it gets better, before deciding what to do. Since purchasing
approx. three/four weeks ago I've had about an hour's use out of it.

Really annoyed.

Robbie,

Any chance of letting me ssh into your linux box to see what's going on?

Assuming you're running Windows, just run the installer for the new
version, no need to uninstall first. Preferences (and DB) will be
preserved.

How big is the music library? Any playlists? What hardware and version
of slimserver?

I know it is annoying if things don't work, especially after a lot of
effort, but it is worth it (I had real problems after putting on the
AlienBBC plugin, but after upgrading slimserver and a few hours of
messing with settings its all working...perfectly)

Have you tried using SqueezeNetwork on your SB2? If thats unrelibale
too (and im assuming you have a good broadband connection), then it
points the finger more towards a network/SB problem. If it's ok, then
it's more likly your servers got a problem.

For what its worth. I had a similar problem, and also, when I added
another ablum to my directory, the slim server would not detect it
after a clear library and rescan. This problem persisted after an
update.

When I completely uninstalled, the re installed the slimserver it
worked much better.

For the extra 5 minutes it takes, it may be worthwhile?

[slim] Re: One more attempt...

2005-09-06 Thread CavesOfTQLT

Q:'How big is the music library?'

A: Well after losing quite a lot with the changing over of the HD
between Windows and Linux, the size is now [fires up Firefox to have a
look] according to the web interface says 'Your music library contains
366 albums with 7335 songs by 181 artists.'

No playlists set-up. A bit pointless as it won't play music properly to
make them worthwhile.

Hardware: Intel P4PE mainboard, Intel P4 2.66Ghz, 512KRam, Seagate
7200/120Gb 8Mb Buffer with Linux Mandrive LE 10.2, Seagate 7200/200Gb
8Mb Buffer with the above music in MP3, OGG and FLAC (plus linux files
from wherever they decided to come from).

And that machine is connected by ethernet cable to the wireless router
which is a Belkin Pre-N MIMO. The SB2 is being used via wireless.
Security is WEP128. SB2 sees the network and connects before the
countdown reaches 14. It sees the SlimServer and has the correct IP
assigned to it. Hit connect and it connects showing the Squeezebox
Home.

Use the remote and the menus are very unresponsive. Select a tune to
play and it shows 'Now Playing' plus whatever's been selected but the
music is terrible with breakups. Sometimes the display shows 'Lost
contact with SlimServer', yet according to the SB2 settings page the
wireless strength is never below 75%.

I'm now really annoyed with the whole thing.

Guess it's 'do everything you can to piss Robbie off' time at the
moment, because I purchased a pump to make the shower into a power
shower. Piped it all up and it wouldn't work. Thinking it was because
the cold storage tank in the loft wasn't high enough to trigger the
switches in the pump, I raised it three feet to just under the roof.
And guess what; it still wouldn't work. Turns out the brand new pump
was faulty.

Robin if you want to ssh into the box go ahead. PM me with what details
you need

The squeezenetwork appears to be okay. I'd been listening to that
because I couldn't listen to my music library due to the above issues.
Thinking it was Windows XP causing the problem I decided to go the
Linux way, but the issue is still there.

I'm wondering whether it's a faulty SB2 after having the above problem
with the brand new pump.

2005-09-06 Thread egauthier

I have tried with the nightly 6.1.2, then went back to 6.1.1, then went
to nightly 6.2.

Somewhere along the way, my problem with that specific artist was
fixed.

However, I am still having the problem with other artist/songs, I just
don't know who they are.

I currently have a discrepancy between iTunes and Slimserver of 90
songs and 208 artists!!

This is driving me nuts.

SlimServer does some auto-identification of Various Artists albums, and
doesn't include those artists (often with single tracks) in the Artist Count.
Please don't go crazy - just because we don't do something exactly like
iTunes doesn't mean it's broken. :)

I think it would be really nice to be able to amend the name. I
renamed my RSS feeds to be shorter so that they actually fit on the
top line of the SB display (which doesn't scroll), so that I can
actually read the (n of n) part at the end!

Most RSS news feed readers allow the name to be changed.

[slim] Re: RadioIO left-channel static

2005-09-06 Thread Dave D

Aaron Zinck Wrote:
I listen to RadioIO Acoustic and I've noticed it, too.

Aaron, thank you for your reply. I thought I was the only one who
could hear this, and it has been driving me crazy. I've all but
stopped listening to RadioIO because of it, and switched over to Radio
Paradise.

Now here's the bad part, I think. I can play RadioIO Acoustic via
Windows Media Player, and I don't hear _any_ left-channel noise at all.
I've been listening very carefully through the same speakers: first
with Windows Media Player, then with Softsqueeze, back and forth. I
hear the noise with Softsqueeze, but not Windows Media.

This could be a Slimserver problem. It seems very unlikely (why only
RadioIO?), but it's the only conclusion I can make, given the
observations.

I would like to get more feedback from others before opening a bug.
The bug report will not do any good if this is not seen as
reproducible. So far, only you and I have reported it.

Other poeple reading this thread: will you please do a simple
listening test? Listen to a few songs on RadioIO Acoustic or Eclectic
with SB1, SB2 or Softsqueeze, and tell us if you hear any noise in the
left channel. Then listen to the same station with some player other
than Slimserver and report that as well.

Thank you very much!

[slim] Re: slimtray.exe not working

2005-09-06 Thread mdrosy

I installed SlimServer 6.1.1 on a server running Windows 2003 Server
(SP1) Standard Edition.

SlimTray.exe starts running at starup, as it is supposed to. When I
doubleclick the SlimTray.exe taskbar icon, it says SlimServer
Starting - but it never starts. slim.exe does not show in the task
manager, and (obviously) it's not available via the web client (and
nothing is listening on netstat -a on port 9000.

If I manually start slim.exe, it opens a cmd (DOS) window, and the
service (slim.exe) runs great, but if I close the DOS window, the
service stops as well (logically).

How can I get SlimTray.exe to actually start slim.exe?? Is it a Win
2K3 server compatibility issue?

Thanks,
Marc
