Well Firmware 41 seems to have fixed the issue for now, however I have no cofidence it will remain fixed. I'm going to run my server/SB3 under test conditions with no additions to the network, no software updates or even any new music added to iTunes for a while...if it fails then there would seem to be an inherent instability of some kind and I'll be sending the unit back for a refund. -- Cubed Cubed's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4144 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23078 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
[slim] Re: No Connection!!
Hi Gooner. I had similar problems and seem to have managed to solve them by doing 2 things: 1. As suggested, log-on to your router and change the channel to see if this gives better signal strength. Most routers are set to the same channel by default (it can vary for different countries) and you may have other networks in range which are conflicting with yours. I had 2 other networks on channel 11 so I moved to channel 6. 2. The wireless utility which came with your wireless card or adapter will probably have a 'let windoze manage your wireless/network setting' check-box. DON'T use this option! The supplied utility may not be as easy to use as Windoze but my experience is that they are much better at not randomly dropping the connection. -- hifisteve hifisteve's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4227 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23101 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I am fairly confident that firmware 41 will fix your stuttering issues. You may find that sometimes a track will stop playing, and you need to press play to restart. This is a known issue and a fix is now in test. To resolve some wireless compatibility issues we had to upgrade the firmware operating system. Unfortunately this has caused problems for some customers in the recent beta releases. I'm surprised your PC stay's on once the SB brings it out of standby. In fact for me, WOL feature was more or less useless until the recent PreventStandby Plugin was released. The Microsoft docs indicate that the PC will resume standby after about 2 mins, so the plugin was required to make an API call every minute to say that the system was in use. Perhaps you already run some software that is making this API call. Mark Lanctot Wrote: Since you list two OSes here I assume you're browsing to it from another PC. Yes. I'm typically accessing the server from my laptop computer over a wireless network. Is there sufficient network bandwidth to get these images to load? Yep. Can do this with little else going across the network (as in: nothing). The network is wireless, 802.11g, and I'm in line-of-sight of the router. Windows indicates excellent signal strength and a speed of 54 Mbps. No other computers are on the network at the moment, and the only thing I'm doing on my computer is typing what you're reading. Also, consider that the graphics for the volume numbers size in at the sub-100 byte range (the number 1 graphic is a paltry 85 bytes), I don't think it should be a problem). Additionally, they will load fine if I right click the empty graphic marker in IE and select Load Picture. That should also make sure the image is in the cache. But then I do a page refresh, and the image doesn't show, an image I know to be in my cache, so bandwith isn't an issue. Also you're using Windows Server 2003, which is unusual. I believe it should work but there may be some issues which aren't often encountered because there are very few installations in a home environment. A forum search would help here except it doesn't seem to be working for me at the moment. Yes, it is unusual. I had our home server running Windows XP Pro some time back (pre-Slimserver), but an associate who had won a copy of Server 2003 at a Microsoft event had no need of it, and offered it to me. Anything good enough for the office is good enough for home, I say. Operationally, it is more secure than its predecessors, but has no problems running other software (to the best of my knowledge). Note: when I finally click on enough buttons in the Slimserver interface, it will begin to behave better, and finally at some point it will start showing all the graphics. Hmmm. I just tested it. When playing, it seems to send the graphics much better (all of them), and when refreshing the screen when in pause, many of the graphics don't show up, as I described before). Is this a clue? If you're using SlimServer as a service you may want to give it higher priority? Just a guess here. Server is already set to give best performance to background services, and typically nobody is even logged in locally (and normally not remoted in, either). I do have several active shares mapped off of the server to my laptop, but that isn't consuming any processor cycles or network bandwidth. Looking at Task Manager on the server, it is about 97% idle on the CPU, and the machine has lots of RAM. The server twiddling its thumbs. Wow, this is a first - an SB that won't work wired but works fine wirelessly...usually it's the other way around. Things to check: - is the router's LAN port light on for that port? - you should be using a patch cable for a router - SB connection, not a crossover cable (although both router and SB ports may be auto-sensing) - swap cables - swap LAN ports - is bridging enabled in the SB? Disable it. - MAC addresses: is blocking activated in the router? Does the SB's MAC address match the one on the bottom of the SB, and is it unique? - can you connect the SB directly to your PC using a crossover cable? You might not want to hear this, but if it works fine wireless, why not use it that way? Bandwidth issues? This is because the Microsoft Wireless Zero Configuration service looks at all the available networks, then helpfully connects to the next-strongest one should your existing connection decrease slightly in signal strength. I have no clue why anyone would ever think this is a good idea. Also I experienced many problems when both Wireless Zero Configuration and my Intel wireless connection manager were running at the same time - they were always fighting each other, so I disabled the Wireless Zero Configuration service. Final note: running SlimServer on a device connected wirelessly is a bad idea. Wireless bandwidth problems will be compounded due to the stream going over 2 hops. Have you tried a different networking device (different switch/hub) with different cables, and perhaps try specifying an IP and a ping test? If you're still experiencing these problems then it's possible that SB has a bad ethernet port. In which case you can ship it to us and we can repair it, however I'm not sure if the ebay seller would be willing to pay for the repair... When you get a chance, reply to this thread with the outcome of some more testing and let us know how it goes. You can also contact me at [EMAIL PROTECTED] if you're interested in the repair. -- Ross L Ross Levine Slim Devices Tech Support [EMAIL PROTECTED] +1.510.743.1152 ext. 3 Ross L's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=4416 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23064 ___ Discuss mailing list Discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

I guess that a lot of you have done like me - ripped the complete CD collection in a suitable format. As my collection is around 1250 CD's, I want to store them somewhere else (not in my living room). Do you have some good ideas for compact and accessable storage ? A lot of people like to ditch the jewel boxes and put the discs into albums. You can get nylon covered albums that hold 100 CDs pretty cheaply. I think some may even go as high as 300 CDs, but something like that would be pretty heavy. I have put my CDs, with jewel cases, into color coded cardboard boxes. I use Feurio for my CD Data base. I printed out the disc artist and titles from that data base and taped a copy of the printout that shows the contents of each box to each box, and made one copy that has all of them listed and the box colors where they are located. I recently had to subnet my wireless network because the paranoids at my wife's job require WPA for wireless on her laptop. So I had to attach a second router with just WEP for the SB1. Here's what I found to be the fatal configuration errors: If you set the Linksys WRT54G to mixed mode, it may not work. Make sure it's set to just B. If you assign a fixed IP address to the SB1, it may not work. You may have to input the SlimServer's IP address into the Squeezebox, which means it must have a static address. My current and fall back solution to get the samemusic and playlists is an iPOD and DLO HomeDock. It's *possible* but there are a few issues. First, because you're using AAC SlimServer will need to either stream uncompressed or transcode to MP3. Depending on how important sound quality is to you, transcoding might be an issue. Uncompressed would likely not work at all because it's simply too much data to stream reliably over those connections. Second the SB1 has a relatively small buffer -- although for MP3 it should be plenty large to handle the unpredictable latency of your connection. You might get better results with the SB2 at the lake. Finally, the last issue would be security. You would probably want to investigate some sort of VPN solution between the two networks because SlimServer really isn't designed to be left open to the internet. Does anyone know of the best wireless router to use with a Squeezebox3? If you're happy with your server going into standby rather than shutting down, then you shouldn't need any plugins to do what you want. just download the latest 6.2.2. Set your power management to put your computer into standby (after 10 or 15 minutes). Open the network interface controller properties for your network card (or wireless network controller). Check the Allow this device to bring the computer out of standby. Check the Only allow management stations to bring the computer out of standby. Putty, Tunnelier, SecureCRT, etc. Sike Wrote: If so, how can I connect a Squeezebox to a Windows server remotley, with a server on the other end, but both with dynamic ip's (the server changes once a month)? I'm not sure I understand your hardware config - can you diagram? With dynamic IPs, you'll need to use a dynamic IP naming server such as dyndns.com (http://www.dyndns.com/services/dns/dyndns/). You only care about the server side, since the client side, where you'll be running your SSH client, will make the connection by name. -- MrC MrC's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=468 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=16089 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss
