[slim] Wireless Amp?

2006-05-16 Thread Charles4400

Does anyone know of a wireless amp they can recommend?

I would like to get all the sound coming out of my main receiver into
another room but hard wiring the amp is not an option.

I know I can use T-amps with a SB to acomplish this with the
slimserver; but I want to get everything coming out of my amp into
speakers of another room (Cd's, tape, etc..).

I am currently using wireless speakers (AR AW-871) but really wanted
something with better sound (wiring speakers to the amp is no problem,
just can't wire the amp to my main receiver...)

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

RE: [slim] Accessing iTunes Playlists

2006-05-16 Thread Craig, James (IT)
It is possible, but bear in mind the iTunes playlists you see in
SlimServer are just a snapshot of the playlists as they were when
SlimServer last scanned the library, i.e. they're not 'smart' any more.

If you've created new playlists in iTunes you need to run a library scan
to see them in SlimServer
Have a look at the wiki page here:

Sounds like you actually need a wireless audio transmitter/receiver
option, something like this:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000B4VLR6/202-6904844-9433406
http://bluewalker.de/uk/index.php?option=com_contenttask=viewid=28Itemid=56

Just add a T-Amp and you should be done.
It uses bluetooth, I have no idea about the range and sound quality.

[slim] Re: Play AACplus

2006-05-16 Thread Ramage

Achieved the following results using the Mplayer CLI:

Some AAC+ streams play OK with Mplayer using very little PC processor
time.

Sky FM streams would play for about a second then recycle and repeat
continuously.

some AAC+ streams (not Sky.fm) start to play on SB3 but stop after
about 30 secs - MPlayer running at 100% processor time. (1.6G P4).
Sometimes the same streams would run perfectly with Mplayer taking a
low value of processor time.

In these trials I am using the full url and not just the IP address.

The consistent inconsistencies are puzzling - any views?

2006-05-16 Thread bpa

Using latest CVS mplayer from Linux shell command line I can play 2 sky
FM ordinary (not premium) stream OK (classical guitar) and then play
for a few minutes - I stopped the streams.

On Windows, with the AlienBBC version of Mplayer I got the same result
as you did.

On Linux with a 10-Dec-05 version of Mplayer, I got the same problem as
on Windows.

Basically, some bugs have been fixed ( I think handling some AAC+
features used by Sky fm) between Jan06 and now so a new version of
Mplayer is needed for Windows.

[slim] Sb2?

2006-05-16 Thread gutted

I like the shape of the SB1 and SB2 - but SB1 lacks native FLAC decode
and wireless G speeds. I'd really like to keep the look of the SB1,
but with additional native FLAC decoding and improved wireless...

Can't find SB2 for sale anywhere - can I still get them from Slim
Devices? Or do I have to go for a 2nd hand one?

Nothing against the SB3 as such, just kind of prefer the style of
SB1/2. But if I went for SB3, what other enhancements (other than
wireless G and FLAC decode) would I get with SB3?

[slim] Inserting Long Comments in ID3v2 Tags

2006-05-16 Thread Chip Hart

Anyone have any experience inserting long comments into ID3 tags?
According to the specs, I should be able to use newlines in the
comment field, but my attempts (using 'id3v2') seem to record
only the very last line.

I'm looking for a method that will allow me to do this in batch
mode and a quick shell script. Something like:

  tagging_tool comment_file mp3_file

Right now, I'm using this:

  id3v2 -t `cat desc/1234.desc` 1234.mp3

...where desc/1234.desc contains the description that I want,
often 40+ lines.

Any help appreciated.

You'll need at least 9000 (TCP) and 3483 (TCP/UDP) for the SB to access

internet.

Those links contained nothing relevant to my problem that I could see.
In those cases reverting to version 6.2.1 from 6.2.2 solved their
problems. I cannot get 6.3.x or 6.2.2 or 6.2.1 or 6.2.0 to run at all.
As far as plugins go, whatever is installed with SlimServer is what's
installed. I haven't downloaded or installed anything other than
SlimServer. On several attempts, after uninstalling SlimServer, I've
deleted the SlimServer folder which would have solved any plugin or
pref.conf file problems like those that were mentioned in the links.
Also, my event log error message was not posted in any of those links.

[slim] Re: Polishing the SB3 Plastic Face Plate

2006-05-16 Thread Mark Lanctot

The plastic face plate or the aluminum face plate?

The aluminum plate is, as you know, brushed aluminum so the scratches
are on purpose.

The plastic face plate, well that's a good question. I've been
thinking about something like this myself. On damaged CDs, I use a CD
repair kit, which simply consists of a tough kind of paper towel (I
believe it's made by 'hydroentanglement'
(http://www.engr.utk.edu/mse/pages/Textiles/Spunlace.htm) of plastic
fibres), a buffing compound and 2500-grit wet sandpaper. I've almost
run out of the buffing compound and I'm considering switching to
automotive buffing compound. It's finding the right grittiness that's
the problem, but if you find the right one, scratches buff right out.
It would surely work on the SB3 faceplate but it's finding the right
grit that's tricky.

The thing with doing this work - you have to press VERY hard, more or
less as hard as you can push, and rub as hard as you can until you feel
heat building up! I used to rub so hard that after a while the towel
would rip and I'd be rubbing with my bare skin, which caused burns. I
now use a rubber glove, which you should use anyway if you're going to
use Brasso.

But I'd advise to try automotive buffing compound as well.

In regards to a buffing towel you need something much stronger than a
paper towel - it will rip in seconds. I'm considering using a J-Cloth,
but its web may be too porous.

So based on my experience with CDs I'd say it's possible. It would be
difficult to put the required pressure on the SB3 since it won't lay
flat though.

SB2s come up every so often, so it's worth monitoring. It's interesting
that they're much less common than SB1s and SB3s, but that probably has
a lot to do with them having the same guts as the SB3: there's little
motivation to sell the SB2 to buy an SB3.

Don't expect a big discount for getting the old model. Wireless SB2s
have generally sold on eBay for US$200-250 over the past few months. A
couple weeks ago one went for US$220, and another sold via Buy it now
for 160GBP, or about $300!

I've solved this problem after scouring the forums. The SlimServer
service seems to crash after encountering a large amount of bad
playlist files. Several others have reported this problem as well. To
solve it I opened up types.conf in the SlimServer\server folder. I
commented out lines for M3U and CUE, as I have both of these stored
along with each ripped CD, and this allowed the server to scan my music
folders without a problem. Ideally SS would just log these bad files, so
they can be repaired later, and move on. Unfortunately, I think SS
stores playlists using M3U files. Will commenting M3Us out of
types.conf cause problems with SSs regular functions?

Yes, they are the same. See
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.cgi?HardwareComparison . And if you'd
rather not simply turn the SB1 into a paperweight (e.g., use in another
room or sell it on eBay) you can order a power supply directly from
Slim Devices (https://secure.slimdevices.com/order/upgrades.cgi )

BTW, besides the native flac decoding and the 11g wireless, another big
plus of the SB2/SB3 is SqueezeNetwork, even without Pandora.

You should be able to run with 512. I've been using that with 6.2.1
and 6.2.2 without issue.

It depends on what else you have running and what else you have
consuming memory though. I try to run a fairly stripped-down setup and
have disabled all but the most essential services and running programs.

However, even when I'm running memory-hogging programs like Firefox,

I'm not sure why people are running with 1 GB or 2 GB of memory these

2006-05-16 Thread gutted

Yes indeed - MP3Tag is my tagger of choice (though I've also got
MP3TagTools around, somewhere).

I don't use MusicIP as a tagger as such - it would be handy to use it
if I spotted an incorrect tag while using MusicIP Mixer, though I've
found that whichever tags it updates are subsequently missing when I
check in MP3Tag.

So - when I say I've been adding tags, by this I mean I've saved
archive analysis into music. This adds a new tag called MusicMagic
Fingerprint (I think) into the MP3.

I don't use MM to actually edit tags as such.

[slim] Stereophile tries the ReQuest server

2006-05-16 Thread Pale Blue Ego

Today's Stereophile e-Newsletter has Wes Phillips taking a hack at the
ReQuest F2.250 audio server. Like most of these one-box players, it is
essentially an expensive computer ($3500).

One thing was confusing about the review. Wes says the F2.250 has a
fan and was designed to go in a closet - yet he connected a $650
touchscreen to control it. He says he installed the F2.250 in his
office and controlled it from his listening room with a Java remote
installed on his wireless laptop. Yet Wes also says he connected the
analog and digital outputs to his audio system (he would have to to
hear any sound). I have to assume that he ran long cables from the
office to the listening room, which seems totally counter-productive.
Why not just skip the audio server altogether and run a long cable from
his computer?

The $3500 F2.250 has a 160GB hard drive. The $5000 F4.500 has a 320GB
hard drive. That's a lot of cake for a drive that costs maybe $30 more
than the 160GB. But the F4.500 has outputs for 4 zones and the F2.250
only supports 2 zones. What's the deal with these zones? Well, to use
zones, you have to run audio (RCA) cables from the ReQuest server to
various rooms in the house. Then you need amps and speakers in each
room. If you want to CONTROL the playback from a different room, you
also need some kind of networking and a computer or laptop at each
location. Seems very clumsy and redundant compared to the Slim method,
where audio AND control signals travel over 1 ethernet cable or through
the air via wireless.

Wes also had some trouble with the FreeDB database (don't we all?). It
wasn't clear whether the database is preinstalled on the hard drive or
whether it gets lookups over the internet, but it's clear that you're
stuck with FreeDB for lookups.

Wes also lost several thousand cool points by calling Ogg Vorbis 'Vogg
Orbis'. He liked the sound of the ReQuest, but for critical listening
he said he would use his megabuck Ayre Universal Player. Sooo...the
ReQuest seems like an awful lot of trouble and expense just for
background music. He's gotta keep all those CDs close at hand for when
he really wants to listen to them, sorta defeating the purpose of
loading a music collection on a server.

It's amusing to read reviews of these expensive audio servers. It just
makes Slim's design seem infinitely more elegant, flexible and
futuristic, as well as ridiculously inexpensive in comparison.

ReQuest doesn't really sell to consumers. Their market is custom
installers, who do whole-house systems for people with lots of money
and little audio or computer experience. That's one reason they name
and price products according to the number of CDs they hold. They want
to de-emphasize the fact that the 500-CD server is just a 250-CD server
with a larger hard drive.

Requiring a video screen for an audio component is another boondoggle
that makes little sense. Sure, you can make a fancier graphical
interface and do things like screensavers that move with the music, but
that's just fluff. It's an admission of GUI failure that you need a big
display to find the music you want.

 Thanks again for the advice.

Neither do I! I'm not sure why they're separate and I don't use this
on a continual basis so I'm not sure. I can tell you that the quality
setting does indeed hit the processor - my P4 2.8 GHz can't manage more
than about 5 on the quality setting without the audio playback
stuttering.

In the encoder command-line argument, the quality setting isn't even
used for CBR, it's used for VBR:

http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=28124

For CBR you'd use -b 320 to encode at 320 kbps. For VBR it's -V X
--vbr-new where X is the quality setting from 0 to 9 - interestingly,
matching SlimServer's quality setting range. The VBR quality setting
determines the average bitrate for a VBR file.

I was certain that SlimServer used CBR encoding but the LAME Quality
Level setting seems to indicate it may use VBR? Surely not, 9 would be
awful at 45-85 kbps. Hopefully someone clarifies this.

I can see why this is done. It makes for a smaller stream size than

[slim] Re: Stereophile tries the ReQuest server

2006-05-16 Thread rudholm

Back in the early days of the CD, I worked for Philips. There are still
CD snake oil salesmen out there today, but back then there were more of
them since people had less understanding of the implications of digital
media. At the office, we would take the ads for the funniest of these
products and pin them up to the bulletin board in the copier room.

Vibration Rings, Error-reducing felt-tip markers, Surface
Conditioners...

At Progressive Consumer Electronics (if you're UK based) we have a couple of
new, platinum wireless SB2 left. 0871 871 9747 and ask for Paul Hanley.

Hello, I'm looking to buy an old Squeezebox, preferably a wireless version 2
model. Anyone looking to get rid of theirs? I've just gotten a second amp,
and now I'm looking for an inexpensive way to spread my tunes throughout the
house.

Thanks

Chris

[slim] live365 question

2006-05-16 Thread JimB

I signed up for a subscription and basically all I find is low bitrate
streams. Is anyone finding any value in the 128kbps range?

All respect intended but 64k kbps mp3PRO is not CD quality.

Really would be interested in user feedback.

I've got a Squeezebox 1 (Graphic version) and a SLIMP3 that I'd be
happy to sell. I'm located in the US (Oregon). You can email me at
kolepard002 (at) charter (dot) net if you're interested.

[slim] Re: If you store lyrics in your tags

2006-05-16 Thread mondelicious

I use the Lyrics tag in iTunes to store long bits of text, e.g. track
listings for long mixed dj sets.

I have seen mention of the lyrics being supported in the web ui, but I
have not been able to see mine. I am running 6.2.2 on OS X 10.4.6.

It would be great to get a quick synopsis via the lyrics before I
decide to listen to a dj set.

I am also interested in accessing this data via the CLI so that I can
use it in my TivoHME app.

Application of the VTS Tuning Dots to the window behind the listening

readily apparent, as well as the removal of harmonic smearing.

They seem to be talking about 40mm plastic discs that you stick to the
 four corners of your window.

F*** unbelievable. I have a cardboard box that, if you stick it
over your speakers, makes the music sound fantastic. It can be had for
 a mere $700. A pair is $2,000. I'm certain to sell some.

Now *that* was funny.

(I'm assuming these are Squeezebox compatible?)
