[slim] Wireless Amp?
Does anyone know of a wireless amp they can recommend? I would like to get all the sound coming out of my main receiver into another room but hard wiring the amp is not an option. I know I can use T-amps with a SB to acomplish this with the slimserver; but I want to get everything coming out of my amp into speakers of another room (Cd's, tape, etc..). I am currently using wireless speakers (AR AW-871) but really wanted something with better sound (wiring speakers to the amp is no problem, just can't wire the amp to my main receiver...) Any suggestions? It is possible, but bear in mind the iTunes playlists you see in SlimServer are just a snapshot of the playlists as they were when SlimServer last scanned the library, i.e. they're not 'smart' any more. [slim] Re: Polishing the SB3 Plastic Face Plate
The plastic face plate or the aluminum face plate? The aluminum plate is, as you know, brushed aluminum so the scratches are on purpose. The plastic face plate, well that's a good question. I've been thinking about something like this myself. On damaged CDs, I use a CD repair kit, which simply consists of a tough kind of paper towel (I believe it's made by 'hydroentanglement' (http://www.engr.utk.edu/mse/pages/Textiles/Spunlace.htm) of plastic fibres), a buffing compound and 2500-grit wet sandpaper. I've almost run out of the buffing compound and I'm considering switching to automotive buffing compound. It's finding the right grittiness that's the problem, but if you find the right one, scratches buff right out. It would surely work on the SB3 faceplate but it's finding the right grit that's tricky. The thing with doing this work - you have to press VERY hard, more or less as hard as you can push, and rub as hard as you can until you feel heat building up! I used to rub so hard that after a while the towel would rip and I'd be rubbing with my bare skin, which caused burns. I now use a rubber glove, which you should use anyway if you're going to use Brasso. But I'd advise to try automotive buffing compound as well. In regards to a buffing towel you need something much stronger than a paper towel - it will rip in seconds. I'm considering using a J-Cloth, but its web may be too porous. So based on my experience with CDs I'd say it's possible. It would be difficult to put the required pressure on the SB3 since it won't lay flat though. -- Mark Lanctot Mark Lanctot's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=2071 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23945 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

SB2s come up every so often, so it's worth monitoring. I've solved this problem after scouring the forums. The SlimServer service seems to crash after encountering a large amount of bad playlist files. Several others have reported this problem as well. To solve it I opened up types.conf in the SlimServer\server folder. I commented out lines for M3U and CUE, as I have both of these stored along with each ripped CD, and this allowed the server to scan my music folders without a problem. Ideally SS would just log these bad files, so they can be repaired later, and move on. Unfortunately, I think SS stores playlists using M3U files. Today's Stereophile e-Newsletter has Wes Phillips taking a hack at the ReQuest F2.250 audio server. Like most of these one-box players, it is essentially an expensive computer ($3500). One thing was confusing about the review. Wes says the F2.250 has a fan and was designed to go in a closet - yet he connected a $650 touchscreen to control it. He says he installed the F2.250 in his office and controlled it from his listening room with a Java remote installed on his wireless laptop. Yet Wes also says he connected the analog and digital outputs to his audio system (he would have to to hear any sound). I have to assume that he ran long cables from the office to the listening room, which seems totally counter-productive. Why not just skip the audio server altogether and run a long cable from his computer? The $3500 F2.250 has a 160GB hard drive. The $5000 F4.500 has a 320GB hard drive. That's a lot of cake for a drive that costs maybe $30 more than the 160GB. But the F4.500 has outputs for 4 zones and the F2.250 only supports 2 zones. What's the deal with these zones? Well, to use zones, you have to run audio (RCA) cables from the ReQuest server to various rooms in the house. Then you need amps and speakers in each room. If you want to CONTROL the playback from a different room, you also need some kind of networking and a computer or laptop at each location. Seems very clumsy and redundant compared to the Slim method, where audio AND control signals travel over 1 ethernet cable or through the air via wireless. Wes also had some trouble with the FreeDB database (don't we all?). It wasn't clear whether the database is preinstalled on the hard drive or whether it gets lookups over the internet, but it's clear that you're stuck with FreeDB for lookups. Wes also lost several thousand cool points by calling Ogg Vorbis 'Vogg Orbis'. He liked the sound of the ReQuest, but for critical listening he said he would use his megabuck Ayre Universal Player. Sooo...the ReQuest seems like an awful lot of trouble and expense just for background music. He's gotta keep all those CDs close at hand for when he really wants to listen to them, sorta defeating the purpose of loading a music collection on a server. It's amusing to read reviews of these expensive audio servers. It just makes Slim's design seem infinitely more elegant, flexible and futuristic, as well as ridiculously inexpensive in comparison. -- Pale Blue Ego Pale Blue Ego's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=110 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=23952 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/lists/listinfo/discuss

ReQuest doesn't really sell to consumers. Their market is custom installers, who do whole-house systems for people with lots of money and little audio or computer experience. I'm not sure why they're separate and I don't use this on a continual basis so I'm not sure. I can tell you that the quality setting does indeed hit the processor - my P4 2.8 GHz can't manage more than about 5 on the quality setting without the audio playback stuttering. In the encoder command-line argument, the quality setting isn't even used for CBR, it's used for VBR: http://www.hydrogenaudio.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=28124 For CBR you'd use -b 320 to encode at 320 kbps. For VBR it's -V X --vbr-new where X is the quality setting from 0 to 9 - interestingly, matching SlimServer's quality setting range. The VBR quality setting determines the average bitrate for a VBR file. I was certain that SlimServer used CBR encoding but the LAME Quality Level setting seems to indicate it may use VBR? Surely not, 9 would be awful at 45-85 kbps.
