In think that the limitation is with your iPod rather than the format.
Most formats should be easy to play without gaps, but that doesn't mean
all software and hardware players will be gapless (including older
iPods). Mp3s are a little harder to deal with, but not impossible. You
could always upgrade to the latest iPods and then you should get
gapless playback for all the audio formats it supports.

[slim] Issues with SB3

2006-09-23 Thread Mattiasa

Hello everybody. I'm new to this forum, and I hope my questions aren't
already answered. I looked thorugh the three first pages and found some
answers anyway... :-)

Well, here's the deal. Yesterday I downloaded the new Slimserver 6.5.0.
I installed it, had some difficulties in finding the Browse by artwork
(found the answer to that one), and decided to go back to the 6.3.1 for
now. Anyway, before this actions the clock was always visible on my
SB3. Now when I shut of the computer, so does the SB3. IE no clock...
I'm a bit confused. Does anyone know why this happens? I will
install the 6.5.0 today again, but I would really like th clock to work
even when the computer is off Is it a setting?

Thx in advance

the SB3 is a dumb device. it can't do much of anything without a server.
If your computer is off, then you'll need to connect the SB3 to
SqueezeNetwork
to get time display. You can connect from a menu item before you shut
off the computer,
or you can hold the power button to reset the player and choose to
connect to squeezenetwork

during the setup.

yes, I have an SB2 also, but SB3 is just grand.
Compare the Ipod to other players. No game.

Please take note, Mrs. SlimDevices.

[slim] 6.5.0 and multi-disc set

2006-09-23 Thread Michel Fombellida

Hi,

I have a problem with 6.5.0 (9916) on XP SP2 and multidisc set.

All my music is tagged with TagRename (FLAC only).

If I select Treat multi-disc set as multiple albums, I end up with 1
single disc containing all the tracks and the disc is named as the last
disc in the set: for example if the set contains 2 discs named xxx
with a total of 10 tracks (tags for track number goes from 1 to 10),
slimserver shows 1 single disc named xxx (Disc 2 of 2) and this
single disc contains all the songs (numbered from 1-1 to 2-10). No
trace of Disc 1 of 2.

If I select Treat multi-disc set as a single album, I end up with
multiple albums with the same name: using the same example as above I
end up with 2 discs, both are named xxx, one of them contains the
first disc and the songs are numbered as 1 to 5 (not 1-1 to 1-5), the
other one contains the second disc and the songs are numbered 2-6 to
2-10.

Anybody else noticed that? Should I open a bug report or is it already
known?

Cheers,
Michel

I would say the chances of SlimDevices developing a unit that didn't
require a server and had its own storage (either as shipped or that you
can add later) is -slim-.

If it did all this it would basically be an MP3 player, not eactly a
Slim device is it?

SD have stated before that they will not allow you to edit or delete

[slim] Re: Why use iTunes

2006-09-23 Thread geraint smith

SteveEast;138716 Wrote:
That's only true if you scan directly. If you scan through iTunes you
 get all the tags.

 Steve.

Yes, and it works in practice, too. Some months - sorry, aeons - ago,
before I knew better and with a degree of intelligence which astounded
even me, I managed to delete my entire iTunes music file, (don't ask)
having completely failed to back up the several months of work this
represented (you may congratulate me later if you wish). The newly
released DataRescue 2 did a superb job in recovering the lot, including
all the iTunes labels and headings (harmonising and correcting the CDDB
version of which had made up most of the months of work).
Unfortunately, though, not those for my digitised vinyl. This left a
piled heap of musical snatches from des Pres to Dire Straits labelled
File 1 to File 4759 or something like that, to re-excavate, the
musical equivalent of the aftermath of a tornado at the archeological
finds warehouse for a cemetary dig. (Ever tried sorting out a few
dozen Gibbons pieces for viol consort from a few dozen Dowland pieces
for viol consort and putting them in the right order, without the
music? Hint: don't.) I'm not quite sure what I might have done to
attach tags to these files securely and so avoid the painful bit, but
certainly there was no problem with the work that iTunes had already
done painlessly for me the first time on the CDs.

Ripping directly into iTunes gives me the full range of labels and
headings (which is what I call them, because I never see the tags
themselves) that I need. In fact, it gives a much wider and more
versatile range than SlimServer will allow me to use (composer, and
seperate entries (in version 7) for album artist and track artist
for instance) on the SB. It is immensely flexible, and extremely easy
(allowing for the shortcomings and inconsistencies of CDDB which, as
I've said, for classical music are considerable and annoying, although
that said, it's still better to have to relabel the odd 1965 Decca
recording of the Wiener Philharmonker from Japanese than to have to do
absolutely everything all the time). And, allowing for the
post-production smoothing and editing necessary for classical and early
music, it's all done from ripping to playing in one seamless process.

The only real disadvantage of which I've heard that really does bother
me is that I'm told that the error correction in iTunes does not match
up to some Windows only programmes, like Exact Audio Copy (I still
can't get this to work for me, but that is without doubt the astounding
intelligence in evidence again). That may affect the sound quality of
iTunes ripping generally (although I've not noticed any degradation in
my collection) but does, I'm told, does make it come off second best
when restoring a damaged or flawed discs so that it sounds better than
the original.

I can't imagine a problem with the two - I've been running MIP 1.7 and

2006-09-23 Thread lostboy

Hi Michel,

I upgraded to 6.5.0 (9916 on Win 2000) last night from 6.3.1

I'm seeing similar behaviour, but am still testing to track the precise
symptoms down.

With server setting for Group Discs Treat Multi-disc sets as multiple
albums - I see the same behaviour as you for albums with the
Discnumber tag set, but no Discc tag (first album displays trackno.
on SB display, subsequent albums display discno.-trackno.). On multi
disc sets that have the Discc tag present the display is as I would
have expected. On 6.3.1 I didn't need to use the Discc tag so most
of my multi-disc albums are missing it.

My albums are flac tagged with MP3TAG. I'm also using MusicMagic.

I'm going to switch the server setting and rescan and I'll report
back.

Chris

You don't need to add a folder to the Itunes library for Slimserver to
see it. Just make sure that Slimserver, in addition to being set to
use Itunes, has the path to your music folder.

I use Itunes but also have a bunch of flac files, which obviosly can
not be added to the Itunes library but Slim finds them just fine.

[slim] Re: 6.5.0 and multi-disc set

2006-09-23 Thread lostboy

OK - this got really confusing - I was seeing correct and incorrect
behaviour from both settings. To try and bottom this out I set up a
test system (6.5 on XP without Music Magic) which would rescan a small
set of albums quickly.

Essentially what I've found (and it seems to be repeatable behaviour
with the test system) is that after you change the Group Discs
setting you must independently trigger a full clear and rescan twice
(each time allow the scan to complete). If you do this the number of
discs shown with multi-disk albums is OK using the Discnumber tag
alone. However the Discc tag needs to be present when you elect to
treat multi-disc sets as multiple albums and you want a correct
display of track number (1-n) in the first disc and to see (Disc n of
nn) displayed along with the album name.

Hope this helps

Chris

[slim] Re: What happened to Artist on display?

2006-09-23 Thread ceejay

Argonavis and Flamingo - lets start by separating what seem to be
distinct issues.

Argonavis - I assume that all your observations are on the web
interface, not the player display? If so you are getting clean,
consistent behaviour: you are getting the string you've asked for
followed by from album and by artist IFF they were not already
given. I've not played with this but I guess it's intentional to give
full information in the web interface where its assumed there is plenty
of screen to work with. On the player display you should get exactly
what you've asked for?

Flamingo - is it still the case that no matter which title string you
use, you aren't getting any artist info? This sounds very odd.
Perhaps you could post some details of what you are seeing, like
Argonavis did.

I had a few similar sorts of problems, basically static and drop-outs,
when I tried to play WMA lossless over a wireless network (also at
about 80% strength). I had a mix of network elements, but the wireless
router was 11g. MP3s didn't have this problem. When i went ahead and
ran the wire, the problems went away. i condluded that it was a
bandwidth problem with lossless files. Turns out maybe I could have
switched to a different lossless file format, from what you say. I have
no idea if in geneal WMA lossless is less efficient than FLAC; of course
it could be something about how they are handled in this implementation.

I have seen a similar thing, but for me it only happens in the specific
case of adding certain internet radio stations to the now playing

next regular refresh about 30 seconds later, but then the refresh is
garbled with HTML code. Doimg a manual refresh fixes this, but
sometimes it takes more than one manual refresh to do so. I reported
this and it's bug 4110. That defect report also contains a screen shot
of the HTML code that appears.

[slim] 6.5 Upgrade - a few questions

2006-09-23 Thread DrNic

Hi all!
Just upgraded my 6.2.2 server to the latest final 6.5 build - was
very particular to erase all traces of old install then install new
one. Glad to say it went smoothly, and I am now listening via my SB3
with no problems so far!! Excellent!
I have a few questions if you don't mind - they may be intended
behaviours but its nice to know!!

1) On the old 6.2.2 I had a fully working Pronto NG ccf file: now this
seems to partially broken. I had direct buttons to access the settings
page and others that performed more basic functions such as brightness
(!) but these no longer work - some doing just nothing others going
straight to a blank screen (mini analogue VU still bouncing away
happily!). Has the IR map changed? Is there a list of HEX codes (full
hex) for the new map?

2) There no longer appears to be the option of deleting album art
placeholders (in the new gallery view on my favourite fishbone skin) -
so now I have lots of ? placeholders along with my (slowly) growing
collection of album covers. Has this option been removed totally?

I thinks thats all for now, but will post any other (dumb?) questions
as I find them!!

Many thanks

Nic

[slim] Re: Does Fishbone skin have a Home?

2006-09-23 Thread andy_c

As one user put it recently, with the Fishbone skin, you're always
home. This may seem counterintuitive at first, but it actually
eliminates some unnecessary navigation. With other skins, you often
have to go home first before going where you want to go. With
Fishbone, you just go directly to where you want to go without the
intermediate home step.

When I first tried Fishbone, I didn't like it. But I tried it again
later with some more extended use and now it's my favorite. It has
some nice touches the other skins don't have. Like in the now
playing list, you can click the I icon to the right of a song to
view its info in the left pane. That's a -really- nice touch that you
could miss on casual usage.

Oh, I'm using 6.3.1 still. With that version and the default skin, if
I click on the song title in the now playing list, it plays that song
rather than showing its info. And there is no song info icon like
with Fishbone. In the 6.3.1 Fishbone skin there are five icons next to
each song in now playing. They are move up, move down, next,
remove from playlist and song info. With the 6.3.1 Fishbone,
clicking on the song title plays the song, same as with 6.3.1 default
skin. Sounds like there have been some improvements in 6.5 in this
area.

I do not use album art very much for browsing but have noticed on
upgrading to 6.5 (using the new Touch Skin) whenever I browse artwork
or even browse using the album search it causes slimserver to crash

Is this a bug or is there something which I need to do with the way art
is stored in my music folders

I am running Win XP SP2 with SS 6.5.0

All album art is stored within the specific folder for each
album/artist

The other question I have with the change in the skins (Touch or
otherwise) is that I recall that when looking at the status / now
playing screen you used to have the path of the track also displayed..
is there anyway to get back this display function?

Oh yes - third question is .. in the Touch skin (which looks great by
the way) is there any way to change the font colour... I have noticed
that when browsing by music folder there is very faint text on the top
and bottom of the page which you can press to link back .. on my set up
it appears as whicte text over very feighnt grey... not very readable

Yes the default skin really does need some work. I find it quite
amazing that SlimDevices are putting out a default skin like this in

need to employ a web developer (and ergonomics specialist).
However, I think you should try the Fishbone tan version. When you are

You may have to delete your browser cache to get it to work correctly,

[slim] Re: Are you willing to pay for a Sirius Radio plug-in?

2006-09-23 Thread GoCubs

I just tried with 6.5 release and it worked fine for me.

Basically the first time the plugin starts up when you restart the
server it has to fetch all the channels available. To do this, it has
to do quite a few web requests, if any of those fail, you have to try
again. Hopefully it'll only take a few trys.

In the past it was pretty rare for a web request to fail, but something
changed within SlimServers networking a couple months ago that seems to
make them fail more often. I've actually updated SuperDateTime to
automatically retry a request if it fails. When I have some time I'll
look into how difficult it would be to have the Sirius plugin do
something similar.

In the mean time, just keep trying! Sorry about this!

[slim] Re: Duplicate Albums

2006-09-23 Thread chris . mason

I'm seeing this behaviour as well.
I've just upgraded to 6.5.0 from 6.3.1 on Windows XP (sp2).

I have a number of compilation albums spread across two or more disks.
On the hard drive, they are structured thus:

d:\music\flac\The Greatest Songs (Disk 1)
d:\music\flac\The Greatest Songs (Disl 2)

and each track is tagged thus:
ALBUM = The Greatest Songs

Under 6.3.1 I wanted these multi-disk albums to appear as one big
album, (but still have the albums as their seperate CDs on the hard
disk) so I made sure the tracks were numbered contiguously, such that
track one on disk 2 would actually be numbered as the last track number
from disk 1, plus one. This all worked correctly under 6.3.1. Now with
6.5.0, I get an album entry for each disk, regardless of how I set
behaviour.

This is a completely fresh install, and I've tried rescanning from
scratch several times. My guess is that 6.5.0 introduces support for
some further ID3 tags concerning compilation albums. Can anybody say
what these tags are, or if this is indeed the case?

Many thanks,
Chris.

[slim] Re: What happened to Artist on display?

2006-09-23 Thread Than

I think this has to do with the wma tags, which have fields for both
Artist (Track Artist) and Album Artist. Standard tag editors and
Windows Media Player only allow you to enter Artist. However a
dedicated wma tag editor like Tag Rename allow you to also make Album
Artist entries.

If a wma file, which includes entries for both Album Artist and Artist
is played on a Squeexe Box 2/3 with firmware 64 and Slim Server Server
6.5.0, Artist is lost on the screen. The problem is that these entries
are presented as Album Artist and Track Artist (play a song and use
right arrow key and scroll down through all fields to check this).
However if Album Artist is left out in the wma-file, the Squeeze box
presents it as Artist only and it will show up on the screen. It seems
it is the Slim Server 6.5.0 that can't cope with Album Artist and Track
Artist. I've tried to use a custom Title Format with both Album Artist
and Track Artist with no success.

In previous firmware and Slim Server versions the Squeeze Box2/3 has
always presented Track Artist as Artist even if the wma file has a
Album Artist entry. This is the reason why it had worked before.

I hope the clever guys at Slim Devices fix this and the old fast
forward and rewind issue when using wma files.

The custom-types.conf file is correct. I believe Simon had installed
the file in the wrong directory and he did NOT modify the file to fix
the problem.

In 6.5 the custom-types.conf and custom-convert.conf files are in the

[slim] cover art in 6.5

2006-09-23 Thread Jack Coates
One of the last changes before release was to stop resizing cover art. I have a lot of different sizes, depending on whether I go the art from Victor Brilon's downloader, emusic, or a random web search. What size is Slimserver optimizing for, something like 150x150? I'm going to use an ImageMagick one-liner to resize everything, but I want to make sure that I'm aiming for the right size.

This isn't the first time.I disagree, but whatever. You're seeing the same browser caching problem that occurs with every other web-based application just force a fresh reload to clear your browser's cache. On Mozilla browsers or MSIE that's Shift-F5, I don't recall what Safari needs, but it's probably Apple-R or something.

I've gone ahead and posted a new version of the plugin. It's raining
out and I was bored so I updated the http calls to automatically retry
if they fail. This should hopefully eliminate the problems people have
been having when the plugin retrieves the channel info.

My http calls at home usually work fine so its hard for me to test the
new functionality, but it was pretty straight forward to implement so
it should work.

Please let me know how it goes.

[slim] sleep function with SlimServer 6.5.0

2006-09-23 Thread edc1

I've just upgraded to SlimServer 6.5.0 - 9916 and my Squeezebox is now
running version 64 of the firmware. In the change log for this release
there is change to the way the sleep function works. (Change 2151.) You
can now set the Squeezebox to sleep at the end of the current song.

The problem I have with this is that lots of my MP3 are 2 hours long or
more. The 'sleep at end of song' works fine if your playing files that
are only a few minutes in length. But if I start a file playing that's
2 hours long. When I use the sleep button the Squeezebox tells me it'll
go to sleep in 120 minutes. And that's the only time delay that it'll
do.

Is there any way to enable the old pre-6.5.0 sleep behaviour? Or have
the ability to switch off 'sleep at end of song' so it switches off
mid-song?

[slim] Re: 6.5 Internet Radio - Connection Timed Out

2006-09-23 Thread wrorke

One of the added bonuses of a Squeezebox is you learn lots about
computers and networking.

I figured out my problem -- my Squeezebox did not have a connection to
the internet. I was running hardwire to the laptop and wireless from
the laptop to the DSL router.

I changed the SB to wireless direct to the DSL router and all is well.
(Change SB IP address to talk to router, tell SB the wireless IP of the
server, voila!)

I guess it's time to finish hooking up the ethernet between the laptop
and SB to the router. Tomorrow perhaps.

[slim] Re: sleep function with SlimServer 6.5.0

2006-09-23 Thread edc1

sleep works as you describe for a song that's shorter than 15 minutes.
end of song, 15 minutes, 30, 45, 60, 90 then sleep canceled. If I start
playing a track that is say 22 minutes long I get. sleep in 22 minutes,
30, 45, 60, 90 then sleep canceled. With a track of 65 minutes I get
sleep in 65 minutes, sleep in 90 minutes then sleep canceled.

So it seems like I can't get the Squeezebox to go to sleep after a time
that's shorter than the time remaining on the currently playing song.

Seems like it shouldn't behave like this to me. I'd have thought if you
have say 22 minutes left on the current track, it should go sleep in 15
minutes, sleep at end of song, 30, 45, 60, 90 then sleep canceled. I
think that would make more sense.

2006-09-23 Thread smc2911

Only use the compilation=1 tag for various artists. For multi-disc
albums, add a tag to each track DISCC=1 and DISCNUMBER=1 or 2 as
appropriate. Note that these tags certainly work for flac and ogg. For
mp3 you are probably better off using DISC instead of DISCNUMBER. I'd
been using the 6.5 beta for a while prior to release and this works
well. I think earlier versions did more guessing, while 6.5 needs to be
told!

[slim] 6.5 Woes

2006-09-23 Thread Mike White

I am running XP with all the latest service patches, an SB2 over a
wireless network that up to now has been basically flawless. (At one
time I did have a problem with my wireless phone too close to the
netgear transmitter, which caused some wierd problems.)

I am also running 6.5 without any add-ons etc. When I installed 6.5 I
carefully went through and uninstalled 6.3.1 and made sure that any
references in the registry were deleted before I installed 6.5.

I am now seeing the following problems:

1) I cannot set up the live365 account information. It very kindly
tells me that there is no live365 account information, but I can't
figure out how to give it the information it apparently wants. I am
probably just being blind in one eye and not able to see out of the
other, but this has become more than a little irritating.

2) Periodically it will come back and say (the squeezebox2) that it
either cannot connect to a particular station ( on squeezenetwork) or
cannot find the playlist when looking at my hard drive. I think I
understand the issue here, and will address it. Basically, the new
version of slimserver does not recognize the old version (6.3.1)
playlists, and gets confused. I will experiment with it and see what I
come up with.

3) I get interiment errors when connected to squeezenetwork, or to
slimserver itself, none of which are repeatable for any length of time,
but are frustrating. A little patience seems to clear the errors, but my
wife has even less patience than I, and wants to it to work the first
time.

Help...

specific, the only

ideas are very general ones.

[slim] 6.5 and Live365 problem -- cannot connect

2006-09-23 Thread Paul Dorn

Just installed 6.5, and trying to use live365. I can browse the list of
stations and pick a station. But when I try to play, I get Connecting
on the box. The web browser displays the song title, so I'm obviously
getting to Live365. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

[slim] Layout/colorscheme of 6.5 seems step back from 6.3

2006-09-23 Thread kremersl

just upgraded to version 6.5

Provided what i'm seeing is correct, is it just me but i find the 'all
white' colorscheme from 6.5 poor compared to the previous one, and it
seems the buttons, urls etc don't align neatly anymore as well..
Or does this indicate on my windows 2003 enterprise server with firefox
1.5 any issue ?

were you using Default2 as a skin before?

try http://serverip:9000/default just to make sure it isn't a cache
problem either.

6.5 uses style sheets much more than before, so if the cache is
sticking to earlier versions, you won't see the right colours as
before.

all white is very wrong

Yes unfortunately that bug slipped through. However, it's already fixed
and you can grab a newer 6.5 nightly or use SqueezeNetwork to listen to
Live365.

[slim] Re: 6.5.0 and cover art strangeness

2006-09-23 Thread vacaboca

...but not all... when actually browsing into the album itself, or any
of the tracks, artwork is fine - but for some albums, I get a
placeholder even though I think I have the album art for the album in
both folder.jpg and in the track id3 tags.

If you're running windows I'm sure foobar will do it without too much

[slim] Re: WMA Lossless users

2006-09-23 Thread WSLam

Hi abergdc,
Actually, your suspicion may not be the reason... I do not think it is
network related. Why? Because WMA does not get directly streamed to
your SB3. All WMA Lossless gets converted to FLAC or WAV (depending on
your SS config) since SB3 itself does not support WMA Lossless. So
whether you are playing WMA Lossless or FLAC, really SS is streaming
FLAC to your SB3.

[slim] Re: WMA Lossless users

2006-09-23 Thread kklemme

It was my impression that WMA lossless is directly supported on
SB3...not transcoded.

What are your experiences with volume leveling behavior with WMA
lossless

Also, If I converted all of my WMA lossless to FLAC, would there be
some quality loss in the process??

Thanks, Kirk Klemme

Hi Kirk,
WMA Lossless is not supported by SB3 or even the Transporter.
Apparently Microsoft charges a licesning fee for WMA Lossless decoder
(in hardware)... I think that is why you do not see many WMAL decoder
in hw.
If you look under your SS's Server settings\File Types, you will see
there are several way to decode WMA... WMA (non Lossless) will get
streamed, but lossless usually gets converted to FLAC.
If you convert all your WMAL into FLAC, I believe the quality should be
identical. I think it will be like unzipping, and then instead of
zipping, you use another compression, say RAR, but the data bits should
remain identical.
